The ground-breaking podcast mainstay celebrates its 13th anniversary by going on tour! Host Scott Aukerman (director of Between Two Ferns), Paul F. My Name is NOT Mom is a hilarious journey through motherhood with internet sensations Tiffany Jenkins, Meredith Masony, and Dena Blizzard. After helping millions of fans get through the pandemic, this comic trio shares their take on mothering through the sleepless nights of the toddler years, middle school craziness and trying not to physically attack a high schooler.

This special live event features stand-up, stories and videos from their online community, and audience interaction to create an up-close and personal experience.

Beginning and ending with the sound of a single hand bell, the music accompanying 13 Tongues ranges from Taiwanese folk songs to Taoist chant, to C53 M54 Y60 K1 K100 electronica. The stage is awash with projections of brilliant colors, shapes, and images, as the dancers gather, interact, separate, and re-gather in a thrilling representation of street life. As the religious heritage of ancient Bangka fuses with the secular space it is today, time appears to dissolve. The spirit realm and the human realm also coalesce as the audience is taken on an immersive journey—recalling the art of legendary street artist and storyteller “Thirteen Tongues”—through centuries of human endeavor, behavior, and belief.

The historic tradition of mariachi music has roots in cities like Guadalajara and Mexico City. Today, the future of the evolving genre rests in the hands of a dynamic ensemble from the capital of the American Midwest: Chicago’s Mariachi Herencia de México. The Latin Grammy-nominated group of young Mexican-American musicians, recognized as the new ambassadors of the mariachi tradition, perform a vibrant tribute to the golden age of Mexican music. Tenebrae: The Passing of the Year Cullen Theater, Wortham Center Sunday • 6:30 PM

The Tenebrae Choir is a London-based professional vocal ensemble founded and directed by former King’s Singer Nigel Short. They’re one of the world’s leading vocal ensembles, receiving nominations for Grammy Awards, BBC Music Awards and Gramophone Awards. Known for their popular culture work as well, Tenebrae performed “So Long, and Thanks for all the Fish” in the film adaptation of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, as well as music on the soundtrack of Alfonso Cuarón’s Children of Men. The choir’s Houston debut features repertoire from the 20th and 21st centuries, including works by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Joanna Marsh, Benjamin Britten, Edward Elgar, and more.

Matthew Whitaker’s love for music began at an early age. At 9, he taught himself to play the Hammond B3 organ. Four years later, he became the youngest artist to be endorsed by Hammond in its 87year history. At 15, he was named a Yamaha Artist, the youngest to join the stellar group of jazz pianists.

The featured artist of Performing Arts Houston’s 2021 virtual gala, Matthew makes his Houston live debut. His sound is filled with refined dynamics, a light and artful touch, accompanied by bright strings and rhythm. His playing and music will astound and inspire.

Throughout its history, New Orleans has been the point at which sounds and cultures from around the world converge, mingle, and resurface, transformed by the Crescent City’s inimitable spirit and joie de vivre.
