New Venues on the Menu

We have a saying at Performing Arts Houston: the frame should fit the art. The right venue can really make a performance sing, and that was literally the case for our presentation of the award-winning choir Tenebrae at The Church of St. John the Divine. Their chilling a cappella performance filled the pews, bringing attendees elbow-to-elbow as they enjoyed the performance in a perfectly sonorous space. Ending a five-year search, our Director of Artistic Programs Lee Strickland finally found the perfect venue to present Scott Sylvan’s mind-bending production At the Illusionist’s Table: the historic Eldorado Ballroom in Third Ward. Last September, we hosted 12 consecutive sold-out performances of the immersive dinner party performance, where guests enjoyed a Houston-inspired menu crafted by Chef Chris Williams, leader of the Michelin Guide recommended restaurant Late August and Lucille’s Restaurant Group.

I wanted to create a space that feels both reverent and radical. We’re bringing together artists who’ve deeply influenced music and performance alongside voices shaping the now and the beyond.

Solange Knowles

Eldorado Ballroom Houston Curated by Solange Knowles for Saint Heron

Working in collaboration with Houston native Solange Knowles and her artistic collective Saint Heron, Project Row Houses, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH), and the Houston Symphony, Eldorado Ballroom Houston became one of the most ambitious projects in our organization’s history. Houston’s Eldorado Ballroom Houston brought Solange’s vision— of an all-genre, mixed-medium celebration of Black artistry—to fruition through five performances across the city. As featured in Essence, Vogue, Texas Monthly, and the Houston Chronicle, the series brought soldout audiences to Jones Hall, the MFAH, and the eponymous Eldorado Ballroom in Houston’s Third Ward. Check out Texas Monthly’s coverage of the series using the QR code below.

houston creates

Performing Arts Houston is honored to be a part of our city’s vibrant arts community. To celebrate our community, we launched a new video series entitled Houston Creates, produced in collaboration with CLICKON, which interviews several friends of Performing Arts Houston to talk about what the arts, and what our organization, means to them.
