NÚMERO DIVINO
Canciones, discos, jugadores de tenis, videojuegos, restaurantes…. Hoy todo es susceptible de estar en una lista para distinguir a los mejores. Ser parte de los diez primeros –del top ten– significa pertenecer a un grupo selecto, no importa el ámbito. Así, Internet está plagada de rankings en páginas como Toptenz.net o Alltoptens.com, donde se pueden encontrar listas convencionales como las diez mejores universidades del mundo o los diez edificios más altos. También hay otros más insólitos, como las diez principales razones para creer en los fantasmas, las diez estructuras más locas construidas con piezas de LEGO o los diez productos más extraños preparados con tocino.
El primer número de dos dígitos de nuestro sistema de numeración, el diez, ha sido clave para el hombre en la mayoría de las culturas. Símbolo de la divinidad y paradigma de la creación del universo, los egipcios y más tarde los griegos –en especial gracias a Pitágoras– fueron los primeros en darle un valor especial a la cifra. La cultura judeocristiana ratifica la importancia del número en la Biblia, con referencias a diez plagas en Egipto, diez vírgenes y diez monedas de plata, entre otras. Más allá de Occidente, el diez también es un número ilustre y, por ejemplo, para el islam solo diez animales serán admitidos en el paraíso, mientras que el budismo contempla diez cualidades para alcanzar la perfección espiritual.

Songs, albums, tennis players, video games, restaurants. Today, just about everything under the sun might be grouped in a list to determine the best. Being in “the top ten” means being part of a select group, regardless of the category in question. The Internet is overrun by Webpages like toptenz.net and alltoptens.com where you can find conventional lists ranking the ten best universities in the world and the ten tallest buildings. There are also more unusual categories like the top ten reasons you should believe in ghosts, the ten strangest LEGO constructions and the ten craziest products inspired by bacon.
The number ten – the first double digit in our numeral system – has played a key role many cultures. A symbol of divinity and a paradigm for the creation of the universe, ten was first given a special importance by the Egyptians and later the Greeks (thanks to Pythagoras in particular). Judeo-Christian culture reinforced the importance of this number in the Bible, from the ten plagues in Egypt to the parables of the ten virgins and the ten silver coins. Beyond Western culture, ten also bears a special significance. For example, in Islam only ten animals will be admitted into Paradise, and in Buddhism, ten specific qualities are need to attain spiritual perfection.
