Premier souvenir de voyage Écouter la bande-son du film Les Goonies sur mon Walkman dans la familiale de mes parents en route pour Utica dans l’État de New York. Plus grand défi du reportage Surmonter ma peur de la vitesse. Dernières vacances Métissur-Mer, au Québec, où j’ai fait de longues (et froides) promenades sur la plage. LETTER OF THE MONTH / LA LETTRE DU MOIS While returning home after a recent trip to Rome, I got stuck overnight in Frankfurt due to a snowstorm. Since I was born and raised in Montreal, the December article “Cold Comforts” brought back fond memories of how Montrealers celebrate winter. From the pickup-hockey cover photo to the snow blower in Vieux-Montréal, you had me smiling and feeling like I was already back home. (The snow that caused my delay wasn’t nearly as picturesque.) When it’s freezing outside (which it is as I write these lines), I scroll through my photos of this Riviera garden, whose 18 terraced hectares stretch gently down to the Mediterranean. Unfortunately, my phone can’t capture the ocean breeze, the area’s natural abundance (over 5,800 species of flowers and plants) or the scent of peonies that will be blooming in just a few weeks. / Quand on gèle (comme au moment d’écrire ces lignes), je fais défiler mes photos de ce jardin situé sur la Riviera, dont les 18 ha répartis en terrasses descendent doucement jusqu’à la Méditerranée. Malheureusement, mon téléphone n’a pas réussi à capter la brise du littoral, ni la diversité qu’on y trouve (plus de 5800 espèces de fleurs et de plantes) ou le parfum des pivoines qui embaumeront d’ici quelques semaines.
As Canadian athletes soar to new heights at the PyeongChang Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games this month, I can’t help but think of the technological advances and the specialists that support our team, from initial training down to the final seconds of competition. The performances we witness are obviously the result of hard work and sweat, but they also owe a lot to logistics, ultramodern equipment and expertise that often goes beyond the world of sport. For this issue, we’re highlighting the things athletes must do long before they hear the starter’s signal. How exactly does one prepare for a trip to the Olympic and Paralympic Games? That’s the question we’ve tried to answer. First, the athletes. The Canadians featured in this issue not only took time off from their training to pose for our series of five covers (I invite you to spot the magazines on your next flight and keep them as souvenirs), they also agreed to give us a peek inside their luggage to reveal their travel essentials (see page 45). That’s how figure skater Patrick Chan almost convinced me to buy compression pants (I didn’t know such a thing existed) instead of compression socks to counter the effects of jet lag. Travellers like us can certainly learn a thing or two from such competitors who fly around the world and need to be in top shape when they land. So we sat down with the expert advisers of the Canadian Olympic Team to get a few tips that you can apply to your next trip. You might not wind up training in the middle of the night to adapt to your destination’s time zone, as the Canadian women’s hockey team did in the lead-up to the PyeongChang Games, but I bet our specialists’ advice will come in handy (see page 61). Our Team Canada special wouldn’t be complete without a look at some of the gear our hopefuls are using on the world stage (see page 67). The logistics involved in transporting it all to South Korea are phenomenal, as is the technology behind these accessories. We chose to photograph them like works of art, which made perfect sense: At the Olympic level, athletes are artists who master their sport like true virtuosos. Let the Games begin.
Alors que nos athlètes s’élancent aux Jeux d’hiver de PyeongChang ce mois-ci, je ne peux m’empêcher de songer aux avancées technologiques et aux spécialistes qui soutiennent l’équipe canadienne, de l’entraînement jusqu’aux dernières secondes de compétition. Les performances dont nous serons témoins sont la somme d’efforts et de sueur, mais aussi de logistique, d’équipement ultramoderne et d’expertise qui dépasse souvent le monde du sport. Ce mois-ci, nous nous penchons sur ce que les athlètes doivent mettre de leur côté avant que ne retentisse le signal de départ. Comment se rend-on aux Jeux olympiques et paralympiques ? C’est la question à laquelle nous tentons de répondre. Tout d’abord, les athlètes. Les Canadiens que nous vous présentons dans ce numéro ont non seulement accepté d’interrompre leur entraînement pour poser pour notre série de cinq pages couvertures (que je vous invite à repérer lors de votre vol et à collectionner), ils ont aussi accepté d’ouvrir leurs valises pour révéler leurs essentiels de voyage (voir p. 45). Le patineur artistique Patrick Chan m’a ainsi presque convaincu d’acheter non pas des bas, mais un pantalon de contention (je ne savais même pas que ça existait) pour contrer le décalage horaire. Les voyageurs peuvent sûrement apprendre une chose ou deux de ces athlètes qui parcourent le monde et doivent être au sommet de leur forme dès l’arrivée. Nous avons donc interrogé les experts qui conseillent l’équipe olympique canadienne pour dégoter quelques conseils. Vous ne vous entraînerez peut-être pas en pleine nuit pour vous adapter à l’heure de votre destination comme l’équipe de hockey féminin l’a fait en prévision des Jeux de PyeongChang, mais je parie que nos spécialistes peuvent quand même vous aider (voir p. 61). Notre spécial Équipe Canada ne serait pas complet sans un survol de certaines pièces d’équipement qu’utilisent nos athlètes lors de leurs performances (voir p. 67). La logistique pour transporter le tout jusqu’en Corée du Sud est phénoménale, et la technologie derrière ces accessoires est impressionnante. Nous avons choisi de les photographier telles des œuvres d’art, et ce n’est pas un hasard : au niveau olympique, les athlètes sont de véritables artistes qui maîtrisent leur sport en virtuoses. At Air Canada, from transporting customers to bringing joy to disadvantaged children, we aim to deliver not just the expected, but the extraordinary. PIDER-MAN FANS KNOW THAT WITH GREAT POWER comes great responsibility. At Air Canada, employees have put their own spin on this superhero credo: With great abilities come great possibilities – possibilities to help people. Network-wide, Air Canada flies 375 aircraft to 200 destinations globally through the teamwork of 30,000 employees. We put our talents to work every day safely transporting customers, but sometimes occasions arise when we can do so much more. Last fall we flew 50 extra flights to move thousands from the path of Caribbean hurricanes. The effort involved hundreds of employees, many of whom volunteered their weekends to pack emergency relief kits. Sadly, there were other situations in 2017 requiring us to step up too, such as delivering search-and-rescue dogs after an earthquake in Mexico and expediting sandbags across Canada for Quebec flood victims. Our desire to help is the reason behind the Air Canada Foundation, which facilitates charitable giving, volunteering and community participation. This includes supporting Dreams Take Flight, which over 25 years has flown thousands of disadvantaged children to Disney. We sponsor events such as the Toronto Invictus Games, in which so many employees wanted to lend their hand that we held a contest to choose our ambassadors. We have also started a Christmas Surprise tradition to give the gift of travel so that people can join loved ones or help others. Most impressively, small groups or individuals act on their own initiative. I think of the station attendant who stayed up all night past his shift to watch over the casket of a customer’s mother, or of the pilot who drove a distraught customer from the airport to the hospital and her sick husband’s bedside. But it is not all life or death. Sometimes, we help in ways that simply bring a smile. One such instance involved a fellow aviator, a rare Bullock’s oriole blown far off course while migrating. Responding to a bird sanctuary’s plea, Air Canada Cargo obtained special government permission to fly the delicate bird crosscountry to its West Coast home. Helping wherever we can does not make us superheroes – it is the Canadian way. Still, I am proud of Air Canada employees’ willingness to go above and beyond, and if necessary do the extraordinary, whether it be for strangers facing disaster or simply to ensure that our customers enjoy a great flight.

Les employés d’Air Canada ont adapté à leur façon le credo de ce superhéros : de grandes habiletés impliquent de grandes possibilités… d’aider les gens. Dans son réseau, Air Canada déploie 375 avions sur 200 destinations mondiales grâce aux efforts concertés de 30 000 employés. Nous déployons nos talents en transportant chaque jour nos clients en toute sécurité, mais avons parfois l’occasion de faire bien plus. Cet automne, nous avons ajouté 50 vols pour éloigner des milliers de personnes de la trajectoire d’ouragans dans les Antilles. Des centaines d’employés, dont plusieurs volontaires, ont préparé des trousses de secours les fins de semaine. D’autres situations préoccupantes nous ont forcés à intervenir en 2017, par exemple en assurant le transport de chiens sauveteurs après un séisme au Mexique et, au Canada, de sacs de sable pour les victimes d’inondations au Québec. Notre désir d’aider est la raison d’être de la Fondation Air Canada, qui favorise les dons, le bénévolat et la participation communautaire. La Fondation soutient notamment Voyage de rêve, qui en plus de 25 ans a permis d’amener des milliers d’enfants défavorisés à Disney. Nous commanditons entre autres les Jeux Invictus à Toronto, si populaires que nous avons dû organiser un concours pour choisir nos employés ambassadeurs. Nous avons aussi lancé une tradition surprise de Noël, qui consiste à offrir un voyage en cadeau pour ramener un proche ou aider quelqu’un. Mieux encore, des employés, seuls ou en petit groupe, agissent de leur propre chef. Je pense au préposé d’escale qui a veillé le cercueil de la mère d’une cliente après son quart, ou au pilote qui a conduit une cliente accablée au chevet de son mari hospitalisé. Cependant, tout n’est pas une question de vie ou de mort, et notre aide fait parfois naître un sourire. Un rare oriole à ailes blanches avait grandement dévié de sa trajectoire migratoire. Répondant à l’appel d’un refuge d’oiseaux, Air Canada Cargo a obtenu la permission spéciale du gouvernement afin de ramener cet oiseau délicat chez lui, sur la côte ouest. Aider dès que nous le pouvons ne fait pas de nous des superhéros ; c’est dans la nature des Canadiens. Je suis fier des employés d’Air Canada qui veulent se surpasser et, au besoin, faire un geste extraordinaire, que ce soit auprès d’étrangers éprouvés ou de nos clients, simplement pour qu’ils jouissent d’un vol agréable.

The film will be more far-reaching in terms of who’s able to see it, which is also exciting.

WHO ARE SOME OF THE CHARACTERS IN THE MUSICAL? IS: The standouts are Captain Beverley Bass, who

was the only female pilot grounded in Gander on 9/11 and the days that followed, and SPCA manager Bonnie Harris, who went into the holds of the airplanes and ensured that all the animals were looked after. DH: Including a couple of rare bonobo apes that were on their way to the Columbus Zoo. YOU’VE SPENT A LOT OF TIME IN NEWFOUNDL AND NOW. DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE LOCAL DISH? YOU’D THINK THEY’D WON THE LOTTERY, FROM THE LOOKS ON THE faces of this group of (mostly) men as we see our rides for the first time. Thirty-two brand new Porsches are parked on the ice outside the Mécaglisse track in Notre-Dame-de-la-Merci, two hours north of Montreal. It’s sunny out, and -21°C. People are shivering, but that might just be the anticipation. Our instructors explain the day’s program. “Wait a minute,” I sputter. “You actually want us to lose control of these $150,000 cars?” The last time I spun out on ice was while driving my dad’s 1987 Chevrolet Celebrity, and although I didn’t do any damage to the clunker, I did end up facing oncoming traffic. It’s not an experience I’m looking to repeat. My new friends, however, are unbothered by the agenda. Every February, dozens like them come to Camp4 Canada to learn how to push the limits of their sports cars back home and become more confident winter drivers – okay, and maybe live out a latent bank-heist-on-ice fantasy. Lead instructor Jonathan Urlin explains that he’s going to put us in an uncontrollable environment – a frozen slip’n’slide, essentially, 2 ½ kilometres long – and teach us how to take control. The topic is weight transfer, and Urlin gives us a quick

On frissonne, mais peut-être juste d’excitation. Nos moniteurs détaillent le programme du jour. « Minute ! dis-je en bafouillant. Vous voulez vraiment qu’on perde le contrôle de ces autos à 150 000 $ ? » La dernière fois que j’ai dérapé sur la glace, c’était au volant de la Chevrolet Celebrity 1987 de mon père, et, même si le bazou n'a pas subi de dégâts, je me suis retrouvé en contresens. Ce n’est pas une expérience que j’ai envie de revivre. Mais ce n'est pas un problème pour mes nouveaux amis. Chaque année en février, Camp4 Canada apprend à des dizaines de leurs semblables à repousser les limites de leurs voitures sport et en fait des conducteurs plus confiants en hiver (en plus d'assouvir un fantasme de braquage de banque avec évasion sur glace). Le moniteur en chef Jonathan Urlin annonce qu’il va nous mettre dans un environnement incontrôlable (une route glacée de 2,5 km) et nous apprendre à prendre le contrôle. physics class, explaining how a car’s motion is just a combination of three inputs: gas, brakes and steering wheel. Can it really be this simple? We break up into four teams to tackle the manoeuvres – my group’s leader is former racing champion Kees Nierop. He takes us step by step through a drifting technique where we will initiate an oversteer to propel our car sideways, and then carefully accelerate out of the bend. “You’re going to race toward this cone,” Nierop says, pointing to the bright orange pylon in the snowbank, “and when you reach it, I want you to lift off the gas and start turning. Then, you’ll gently apply the brakes.” It’s only four steps, but it seems like an awful lot to remember. We jump into our cars – mine is a black 911 Carrera S that rumbles like a hungry cougar. I drive it around the bend and wait in queue for my turn. Attached to the dashboard is a CB radio through which Nierop gives each car its instructions. “Car four, go!” he calls out, and I put my foot on the gas – it’s not enough. “On the gas, on the gas, on the gas,” Nierop barks through the radio. I accelerate as much as I can, and then I lift, turn left and brake, Nierop’s voice guiding me through the motions. The car’s weight shifts to the right and it skids. After I let it slide, I let go of the brake, straighten the wheel and then hit the gas one more time to pull around the corner. Narrowly missing a snowbank, I accelerate into the straightaway. I exhale and actually laugh, the stunt now behind me. For a moment, I recognize the math behind the machine. Driving in snow and ice has always felt perilous, but after breaking the motion into its individual parts, I’m not so afraid of losing control. And at least I didn’t wind up in oncoming traffic. Pour aborder les manœuvres, on se divise en quatre équipes ; le chef de mon groupe est l’ex-champion de course automobile Kees Nierop. Étape par étape, celui-ci nous montre une technique de drift qui implique qu’on fasse un survirage pour faire déraper l’auto puis qu’on accélère doucement hors du virage. « Vous allez foncer vers ce cône », dit-il en indiquant la balise orange vif dans le banc de neige, « et sitôt arrivé, vous allez relâcher l’accélérateur et commencer à virer. Puis vous freinez doucement. » Il n’y a que quatre étapes, mais il me semble que ça fait beaucoup. On saute dans nos bolides ; le mien est une 911 Carrera S noire qui gronde tel un puma affamé. Je démarre et me mets en ligne. Au tableau de bord est fixée une radio par laquelle Kees fournit ses directives. « Voiture quatre, go ! » lance-t-il, et j’appuie sur le champignon… mais pas assez. « Fonce, fonce, fonce ! » crie-t-il. J’accélère autant que possible, puis je lève le pied, vire à gauche et freine, la voix de Kees me guidant au fil des étapes. Le poids du bolide se déplace sur la droite et l’auto dérape. L'ayant laissée glisser, je lâche les freins, redresse le volant et réappuie sur l’accélérateur pour sortir du tournant. Je frôle un banc de neige et accélère dans la ligne droite. Je souffle et éclate de rire, les acrobaties étant maintenant derrière moi. L’espace d’un instant, je saisis les lois de la mécanique qui gouvernent cet engin. Conduire dans la neige et sur la glace m’a toujours paru périlleux, mais, après avoir décomposé le mouvement en ses divers vecteurs, j’ai moins peur de perdre le contrôle. Et puis je ne me suis pas retrouvé à contresens.

Lee Foundation. Fred Lee oversaw a live auction, and the event raised over $1 million in support of revitalizing the city’s Chinatown. During the lead-up to this month’s Winter Games, Marie-Philip Poulin and her Canadian teammates shifted their training schedule to PyeongChang’s time zone – hitting the ice in the middle of the night and having breakfast for dinner – to be fresh when they face their rivals, Team USA. Poulin first slid into the national spotlight at the age of 18, when she scored Team Canada’s only goals in a shutout gold-medal match against the United States at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games. In Sochi, she became a national hero, scoring Canada’s game winner in overtime. Now playing for Montreal’s Les Canadiennes, Poulin is considered one of the best offensive hockey players the country has ever produced – regardless of sex – and she’s got her sights set on helping her team win Canada’s fifth consecutive gold in women’s ice hockey. En préparation des Jeux d’hiver disputés ce mois-ci, Marie-Philip Poulin et ses coéquipières canadiennes ont réglé leur entraînement à l’heure de PyeongChang (foulant la glace en pleine nuit et déjeunant au lieu de souper) pour être au sommet de leur forme contre leurs rivales de Team USA. Cassie Sharpe is ready to wow PyeongChang crowds with her groundbreaking switch cork 720 trick – she was the first woman to ever land one in competition. Her season started with a gold-dusted bang, when the Vancouver Island-native, who grew up skiing the somewhat smaller slopes of Mount Washington, placed first at a World Cup event in New Zealand. The Olympic hopeful knows competing in Korea will be a whole different half-pipe: “Everybody’s watching.” But Sharpe and her training team have a decidedly business-as-usual motto when it comes to performing on the world stage: Just do what you’ve already done. Patrick Chan has grown up on the rink, having started skating at the age of five, then competing in his first Olympic Games (as one of the youngest in the sport) at 19 in Vancouver. Now, for what might actually be his last Winter Games – he hung up his skates for 18 months after his silver-medal performance in Sochi, but returned at the end of 2015 – Chan wants to enjoy the Games as an adult. (Well, sort of: He’ll still get in on the Nintendo tournaments in the athletes’ dorms.) For him, that means leaving behind any unnecessary distractions, like superstitions. “I used to have lucky charms, but superstitions just play with your head. Now, what I pack and how I prepare for travel has become a routine, and that routine is the charm.” Patrick Chan a grandi sur une patinoire : il patine depuis l’âge de cinq ans et a fait ses débuts aux Jeux olympiques à 19 ans (un des plus jeunes de sa discipline), à Vancouver. These are a pain in the butt to get on – I’ve struggled many times in airport bathrooms before flights – but they’re really helpful for circulation and for feeling a little less jet-lagged when you arrive. I picked 1984 because of everything that’s going on in the world, and George Orwell’s Animal Farm was one of my favourite novels in high school. As a Canadian dual athlete, Mark Arendz won’t have a lot of downtime in PyeongChang: Nordic skiers and biathletes often compete on the first and last days of the Winter Games (and most in between). The Maritimer has come a long way since learning to ski in his backyard in PEI, winning silver and bronze medals in the biathlon in Sochi 2014 and five medals across both his sports in last year’s World Para Nordic Championships in Finsterau, Germany. Arendz will have a streamlined packing list for his third Paralympic Games, except where his skis are concerned – he’ll be bringing 20 to 24 pairs with him to South Korea, so he’s ready whatever the conditions. “I take practically every ski I own.” Inscrit dans deux disciplines, Mark Arendz ne chômera pas aux Jeux de PyeongChang : ski nordique et biathlon sont souvent à l’horaire les premier et dernier jours des Jeux d’hiver (et la plupart des autres). Ce fils des Maritimes a fait du chemin depuis qu’il a appris à skier dans sa cour à l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard, remportant des médailles d’argent et de bronze en biathlon à Sotchi 2014 et cinq médailles au total aux Championnats du monde de ski paranordique de Finsterau, en Allemagne, l’an dernier. I use this travel roller all over my body to work out any tight spots. It’s hollow on the inside so I can pack things in there, too, like protein powder and my lacrosse ball, which I use with the roller. I’ve tried hockey balls but they tend to collapse when you put your weight on them; lacrosse balls are harder. Je me passe ce rouleau de voyage sur tout le corps pour soulager les tensions. Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir never step onto the ice to compete without hugging, which is a little different from when they first started – as seven- and nine-year-olds too shy to even speak to one another. After deciding the Sochi 2014 Games would be their last ones for Team Canada, the gold-medal-winning ice dance duo returned to the rink at the end of 2016. “When we imagined watching these Games from home, that didn’t sit well,” says Virtue. “At this point in our career, to say that we enjoy it more than ever, that we’re doing programs we’re more emotionally connected to than ever, that’s such a luxury,” adds Moir. En compétition, Tessa Virtue et Scott Moir ne sautent jamais sur la glace sans s’étreindre, alors qu’à leurs débuts, les timides enfants de sept et neuf ans qu’ils étaient n’arrivaient même pas à se parler. REST WELL BEFORE YOU GO REPOSEZ-VOUS AVANT DE PARTIR Travel fatigue is the tiredness and discomfort you feel after your daily routine goes off the rails and you spend half a day in a seated position. Flying Toronto to Lima – an eight-hour flight within a single time zone – will bring on travel fatigue. The 11-hour flight from Vancouver to Seoul, cities which are 17 hours apart on the clock, will give you jet lag, too. So if you start your trip short on sleep, all the jet-lag cures in the world won’t help. That means no all-nighters pre-departure – and none on arrival, either. La fatigue du voyage, c’est la lassitude et l’inconfort qu’on ressent quand on casse sa routine en passant une demi-journée assis. Le trajet Toronto-Lima (un vol de huit heures dans un même fuseau horaire) sera cause de fatigue du voyage. I worked with a Jasper, Alberta, artist named Jason Bartziokas on the design. The crow is associated with luck and positive change, the maple leaves are all about pride and passion for Canada and the skull symbolizes an indifference to danger. Skeleton racers sign no-fault-of-death liability releases before every competition – I wanted to own that fear of death. J’ai collaboré avec l’artiste Jason Bartziokas, de Jasper, en Alberta. The wear on the chin comes from the helmet scraping ice. If your head weighs 10 pounds, multiply that by the force of gravity pressing against it, which is about 5Gs mid-race, and your head weighs 50 pounds. It’s very difficult to raise it. 165 CM Minimum length for men’s slalom skis set by the International Ski Federation. They averaged between 203 cm and 207 cm until the early 2000s, when “shaped skis,” which are shorter and hourglass-shaped (skinnier at the waist with a wider tip and tail), enabled quicker, sharper turns. The drawback? Smaller planks make balance between gates trickier and less safe. Hence the length limit. Airspace Flow Program is a traffic management process in the enroute system. Programme de régulation du débit dans l’espace aérien : gestion du trafic en route. A Ground stop is a procedure requiring aircraft to remain (wait) on the ground. It may be airport-specific or related to a geographical area. Programme d’arrêt au sol : mises en attente des avions au sol, à un aéroport en particulier ou dans un secteur géographique.
What’s the hold up? Pourquoi attendre ? Bad weather is by far the number one reason why airports slow down. When it hits, ATC (Air Traffic Control) will implement measures such as ground stops or flow controls. If it’s snowing heavily in Montréal for instance, departures from Toronto may be instructed to remain on the tarmac (ground stop) or be given a specific “wheels up” takeoff time (flow control). At a high traffic airport you might see an aircraft sitting conspicuously on the tarmac, patiently waiting for their turn to depart.
