CAES CHATS

The goal of the Alumni Enrichment Committee is to provide lifelong enrichment opportunities to alumni through events and programs.

CAES Chats is a series of interactive online sessions between alumni, friends and UGA faculty members - present and past. Participants have the opportunity to ask questions.

Robert Shewfelt, former Food Science and Technology professor, spoke to more than 60 people about Chocolate Science.

AG DAWGS AFTER HOURS Connecting with alumni and friends is one of our priorities, and Ag Dawgs After Hours gave us a chance to do that.

The Statesboro event had more than 35 people in attendance. Thanks to Three Tree Coffee and Philip Klayman (BSA - Agriculture and Applied Economics, ’11) for letting us use your space.

The East Georgia Chapter honored Jimmy Blitch (BSA - Agriculture, ’54) during the event for his deep commitment to agriculture and the chapter. He was presented with a certificate and photo of a brick paver they had placed in his honor in the walkway leading to the CAES Activity Center at Four Towers.

AWARDS AND RECOGNITION The Awards and Recognition Committee is responsible for planning, reviewing, improving and coordinating all alumni awards programs for the CAES Alumni Association and the Georgia Agricultural Hall of Fame.

This committee is also responsible for raising awareness of the association’s award programs and finding additional ways to increase awareness of CAES alumni.

VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD The Volunteer Service Award was created to recognize individuals who have generously given of their time and talent and gone above and beyond to support the alumni association, the college or one of its departments through volunteer service.

Takeover Tuesdays were implemented to gain awareness on social media, specifically Instagram, about the work CAES alums are doing and how they arrived at their current career. Each story was viewed more than 275 times on Instagram.

To engage with alumni on Instagram, GIF story prompts were created. Alumni were asked their major, favorite UGA memory, place on campus, sport and ag commodity.

The Class of 2020 was asked their major, favorite achievement, place on campus and what’s next? Each prompt then asked for them to tag someone else to keep the chain going.

LEGISLATIVE APPRECIATION LUNCH

The CAES Alumni Association Legislative Appreciation Lunch was held February 12, 2020 in conjunction with the Georgia Rural Caucus weekly meeting at the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Members of the Senate and House, CAES college representatives, and alumni board members met for lunch and a college update.

GOVERNANCE

BOARD MEETINGS

The goal of the Governance Committee is to recruit and develop a highly engaged board of directors that reflects the diversity of our CAES graduates. The committee also provides direction for the board’s effectiveness and continuing development.

Each month the alumni association board meets via Zoom to discuss committee tasks and the work of the association.

At least one time a year the board comes together for a face-to-face board meeting.

Breaking into smaller groups helps to brainstorm ideas for the next year.

ANNUAL MEETING The CAES Alumni Association Annual Meeting is a way to connect with other alumni, engage in the work of the association, and celebrate volunteers and their accomplishments. This year’s annual meeting went virtual with more than 70 attendees.

A snapshot from each alumni association committee was given to highlight the work done throughout the year, the UGA CAES Alumni Association Volunteer Service Awards were presented to four individuals, Brent Marable provided remarks about his year as president and the meeting ended with everyone calling the Dawgs.

UGA MENTOR PROGRAM

Held each August and January, the CAES Office of Academic Affairs hosts CAES Orientation 2.0 dedicated to welcome freshmen and transfer students to the college. The CAES Alumni Association has representatives on hand to promote the association and upcoming events.

CAES STUDENT STUDY BREAKS

Do you have one to two hours per month to make an impact on a student? The UGA Mentor Program is the perfect way to do just that! You will be able to share your experiences and provide feedback to a current student as they prepare for life after college. The program will allow a student to connect with you based on a profile you provide.

The goal of the Student Connections Committee is to support and enhance the student experience on all three campuses (Athens, Griffin and Tifton).

The Moment When

THE FUTURE BECOMES CLEAR BECOME A UGA MENTEE

Snacks, fruit, water and coffee are available in the Four Towers Student Activity Center for students and study groups to enjoy during finals week. Exam study break snacks are funded by gifts to the CAES Alumni Association Eterna Endowment.

Offered in the fall in Athens. Spring was canceled due to COVID-19.

AG DAWGS AT WORK This lunch and learn series brought students together with alumni panels to get a glimpse of how alumni ended up in their current roles. Panelists offer advice on how students can be ready for their careers.

Throughout the four sessions nearly 200 participated. Griffin students were able to participate via Zoom for three sessions, while Tifton had an in person panel and participated via Zoom for another session. Topics were Making the Most Your College Experience, Don’t Miss Out on Your Next Big Opportunity, Selling the Value of Your CAES Degree and Unexpected Career Paths.

GRADUATION

CAES graduates receive gifts from the CAES Alumni Association during convocations held on all three campuses. The gifts include a welcome message and Ag Dawg social media handles. The association helps sponsor a reception for December graduates in Athens. CAES alumni speakers welcome graduates to the association at Athens and Tifton ceremonies.

AG DAWG KICKOFF Each year the UGA CAES Alumni Association hosts a kickoff event for students, faculty and staff to celebrate the start of another year. Attendees enjoy food, learning about the clubs CAES has to offer, getting free CAES swag, and cheering on the Dawgs with the Redcoat Band, Flagline and Georgettes. More than 450 people came to the Livestock Instructional Arena for the event.

During the Welcome Week at the Griffin Campus, the alumni association provided doughnuts and T-shirts to students.

This was the first year Ag Dawg Kickoff was expanded to the Griffin Campus.

Tifton Campus students, faculty and staff filled Blackshank Pavilion for a night of Italian food and live music to welcome in the new academic year at Ag Dawg Kickoff.

RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT The goal of the Resource Development Committee is to create and increase a culture of philanthropy among alumni and friends. Members assist with annual giving initiatives. They also focus on increasing sponsorships for alumni association programs and events.

CAES ALUMNI ASSOCIATION ETERNA ENDOWMENT In 1973, the CAES Alumni Association Eterna Fund was established to provide financial assistance to the CAES Alumni Association and CAES to help carry out many projects. Only earnings from the endowment are used annually to fund CAES Alumni Association initiatives.

CAES ALUMNI ASSOCIATION ETERNA GRANTS UGA student organizations and departments have the opportunity to apply for funding from the CAES Alumni Association. Grants provided by the association assist students with activities ranging from hands-on learning to travel support for conferences and competitions. Funding is made possible by the CAES Alumni Association Eterna Endowment. In FY20, nine grants were awarded totaling $6,000. Due to COVID-19, many of the spring opportunities were canceled and the impacted student organizations have the opportunity to use their grants in FY21.

CAES BRICKS AT FOUR TOWERS CAES empowers students by providing them with a strong, thorough education.

Commemorate your time at CAES and help lay the foundation for the college’s continued excellence by supporting the Four Towers Brick Campaign.

Personalized bricks are placed in the walkway leading to the CAES Activity Center in Four Towers. For a $50 contribution, you receive an engraved brick, certificate and photo of your brick upon installation. Proceeds from brick contributions support the CAES Activity Center, which houses a student lounge and the Georgia Agricultural Hall of Fame. Gifts to the Four Towers Brick Campaign are tax deductible.
