South Lee Prep School, Bury St Edmunds
YEAR 7 & 8
Forward-thinking Prep School in bustling Bury St Edmunds
Outstanding nurture and care from staff who go above and beyond for every child
Small class sizes, specialist teachers and excellent facilities
Years 7 and 8 form what I like to call the "launch pad" for your child’s future. These years are where everything comes together. In these crucial final two years, our students begin to take ownership of their learning. With guidance, they learn how to manage increased academic demands, master time management, and develop the study habits that will serve them throughout secondary school and beyond. Here at South Lee, we give them the tools to transition smoothly into the next phase of their educational journey.
One of the great strengths of our school is the small, nurturing environment we offer. By the time our students reach Year 7 and 8, they are confident members of the South Lee community—ready to lead younger students, take on more responsibilities, and grow as young leaders. It is in these years that they can truly shine. They are not just ‘another pupil’ in a large year group; they are part of a tight-knit community where their individual talents are recognised, and their personal growth is actively encouraged. If you move your child to a senior school at the age of 11, their role models become 18-year-olds and their academic horizon becomes GCSE’s. At a time when young people are under ever-increasing pressure, leaving them in a smaller, familiar environment can be hugely beneficial.
It’s important to remember that the jump to secondary education can be a daunting one. But by staying with us through Year 8, your child will be in an environment where they feel secure and supported, even as we stretch and challenge them. This stability allows them to tackle new challenges with confidence.
Beyond academics, our Year 7 and 8 students benefit from enhanced opportunities for leadership, sports, performing arts, and outdoor pursuits. They are given opportunities to lead school initiatives that crucial role just want develop into thrive in
I understand that choosing the right secondary school for your child is a significant decision, and the pressure to secure a place at a top school can sometimes push families to leave a prep school earlier than they might wish. However, I want to reassure you that staying at South Lee until the end of Year 8 will not limit your child’s opportunities; in fact, it will enhance them. The strong foundation built here ensures that your child is fully prepared, not only for entrance exams and interviews but for the challenges and opportunities that await them in secondary school.
Preparing for the pre-tests or entrance exams.
We are aware of the nature of the schools’ pre-tests or entrance exams systems. We have staff at school with specific responsibility for ensuring that the children's preparation is appropriate to their needs. We constantly liaise with senior schools to keep abreast of their changing requirements and to ensure we prepare the children correctly for their interviews.

At South Lee, we have a proven track record of helping our students secure places at their first choice of senior schools, with many of them receiving scholarships or awards. We ensure they are emotionally and socially prepared to make that step. They leave us not only as successful learners but as independent thinkers, compassionate friends, and resilient young people ready to thrive.
In these formative years, every moment counts. By staying at South Lee until the end of Year 8, your child will benefit from an allencompassing experience that prepares them academically, socially, and personally for the challenges ahead.
I urge you to trust in the process we have in place. Let your child complete their journey with us, and I am confident that you will see the full benefit as they make the seamless transition to the next stage of their education.
