... to next steps

Our Prep School

“A child’s learning environment shapes their learning experience.”

We are committed to guiding children from their earliest years through every step of their educational journey From Reception to Year 2, we provide a robust and stimulating learning programme that makes full use of our outstanding indoor and outdoor teaching facilities. With small class sizes averaging 18 per year group, we ensure that each child can progress at their own pace within a supportive and nurturing environment. Our experienced educators offer personalised attention, helping children to build foundational skills and foster a love for learning, while gaining confidence as they begin their academic path.

As children transition into Years 3 and 4, they are introduced to a more challenging and varied curriculum designed to further develop the skills needed for future success, leading towards Senior School. Through weekly Forest School sessions and a diverse extra-curricular programme, children have the chance to apply their existing abilities while exploring new interests. This dynamic approach fosters resilience, critical thinking, and creativity, preparing them for the next stage in their academic journey.

From Year 5 to Year 8, pupils experience an increasingly demanding curriculum that supports their transition to Senior School and beyond. Our tailored learning approach is enhanced by enriching activities, including Forest School, and a wide range of extra-curricular options. These opportunities allow pupils to sharpen their existing talents and discover new ones in a vibrant and encouraging environment. With a strong focus on academic challenge, personal growth, and character development, we equip our pupils with the knowledge, resilience, and confidence they need to seize future opportunities with purpose and enthusiasm.

Learning for life

“From the day your child arrives at South Lee Prep, they will be immersed in learning; everything they do is an opportunity to build skills and knowledge.”

We support our children to reach their full potential, providing guidance and encouragement every step of the way. The result is a positive, motivating environment where pupils consistently achieve strong, meaningful results.

Our carefully crafted curriculum ensures that, as your child progresses through the school, they gain a solid foundation in all key academic subjects. Each stage is thoughtfully designed to build deep knowledge, ignite curiosity, and foster a love of learning.

Alongside academic achievement, our approach nurtures pupils into confident, independent learners - equipped with the skills and strategies to carry their learning experiences far beyond the classroom.

From the earliest years, we focus on essential building blocks: confidence, effective communication, and independent thought. Our youngest learners absorb key concepts of phonics and maths through engaging, play-based activities that make learning both enjoyable and meaningful.

As children grow, their learning becomes more structured, yet it remains dynamic and fun. We believe that happy, motivated children are the most effective learners, so all lessons are lively, focused, and deeply engaging. Through this personalised approach, every child is empowered to excel at their own pace while making significant progress.

Our carefully tailored curriculum, aligned with the national framework, is designed to prepare pupils for future entry into both independent schools and state schools at Year 9. From the early years in our nursery and reception classes, which follow the Early Years Foundation Stage, we focus on building strong foundations in key subjects such as maths, English, and science. In addition to these core areas, we place particular emphasis on computing, languages, and humanities, encouraging pupils to explore, examine, and experience the world around them as curious and engaged learners - both physically and digitally. This broad and enriched approach fosters critical thinking, creativity, and a deep understanding of their role in a wider, interconnected world.

As pupils progress into Year 6, each child is provided with their own individual iPad. This not only helps them develop essential digital skills but also builds confidence in using technology - an important skill for their current education and future learning.

Guiding future success

A Strong Foundation for Senior Schools

We are proud of the strong foundation we provide for our pupils, ensuring they are well-prepared for their next steps as they transition to senior schools. Many of our students stay with us until the end of Year 8, after which they move on to a range of outstanding independent and state schools.

We take great pride in hearing from senior schools that our pupils are not only academically prepared but also confident and ready to take on the challenges that come with the next phase of their education. They consistently note how wellprepared our students are for the transition, and we could not be prouder of their achievements.

Choosing the right senior school for your child is a big decision, and we know it can feel overwhelming. That is why we work closely with both parents and pupils to ensure that each child finds a school that is the perfect fit. We are here to guide you through the process, providing support with everything from exams and scholarship applications to interviews.

“Children are happy here as they have the freedom to be themselves.”

School life is a journey of self-discovery - a time when children uncover who they are, recognise their strengths, and begin to explore the difference they wish to make in the world. It is a chapter filled with opportunity, where every moment offers a chance to explore passions, nurture talents, and embrace the joy of learning. Through an array of enriching experiences, pupils are encouraged to find what excites them most - be it sport, drama, music, coding, or creative pursuits - each designed to inspire and unlock their full potential in a supportive and encouraging environment.

In Years 7 & 8, students enjoy exclusive access to their own dedicated common room - a relaxed space just for them, complete with a pool table and board games, offering a perfect retreat during break times to unwind and connect.

Our approach to learning extends far beyond the classroom walls. Whether collaborating on the sports field, expressing themselves in a performance, or solving challenges in STEM, every opportunity is designed to stretch imaginations and build confidence. Pupils are encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, explore new possibilities, and develop the resilience to grow through experience.

This commitment to holistic development ensures that every child is prepared not just for academic success, but for life. We nurture independence, curiosity, and a strong sense of identity, equipping pupils with the tools they need to embrace the future with courage and purpose. Inspiring creativity

“The performing arts enrich our school life.”
“Visiting artists and trips to galleries and museums. ”
“Art scholarships awarded by senior schools.”

Art lessons, taught by our specialist teacher, offer pupils the opportunity to explore a wide range of techniques and mediums, from painting and clay to textiles and design Each session encourages children to express themselves creatively while developing new skills and techniques.

In our dedicated art space, pupils are introduced to different artists and the world around them, sparking their curiosity and imagination. Every lesson is designed to nurture their passion for art, giving them the confidence to experiment and express their ideas.

From personal projects to group collaborations, children are given the chance to showcase their talents, learning the value of creativity, patience, and selfexpression along the way. Art is not just about creating; it is about discovering new possibilities and enjoying the process.

All the world’s a stage
“The

performing arts enrich our school life.”

At South Lee, we recognise the profound impact that performing arts can have on young minds. Drama, in particular, is a powerful tool for nurturing creativity, boosting self-confidence, and enhancing communication skills. Through our dedicated LAMDA tuition, pupils are offered the opportunity to explore the art of performance, with expert guidance to help them develop strong vocal, physical, and emotional expression.

Our drama studio provides a dynamic space for students to rehearse, perform, and immerse themselves in the world of theatre. Whether they are taking part in our much-anticipated annual school productions or engaging in smaller-scale performances, each pupil has the chance to shine on stage and experience the thrill of bringing a story to life. These opportunities not only build confidence but also foster teamwork, as pupils collaborate to create something truly special.

In addition to drama, our talented dance teacher offers lessons in ballet and contemporary dance techniques. Pupils are introduced to a range of movement skills, learning to express themselves through dance while building strength, flexibility, and discipline. This combination of drama and dance allows pupils to explore different creative outlets, nurturing their passion for the performing arts.

From the moment they step into the drama studio, pupils are encouraged to take risks, explore new ideas, and discover their own unique voice. With drama and dance at the heart of our extracurricular offerings, we provide a platform for every child to express themselves, build lifelong skills, and cultivate a passion for the performing arts that will stay with them beyond the classroom.

The sound of music

“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything.”

Music enriches the lives of pupils, fostering a lifelong love for melody and rhythm. Many children take individual lessons in a variety of instruments, guided by skilled tutors who nurture their talents and encourage their musical growth. Whether learning to play the piano, mastering the violin, or exploring the joy of singing, each child has the opportunity to develop their skills and confidence.

The school calendar is brought to life by regular musical performances, where every child takes to the stage with pride. From choral arrangements to accomplished solo pieces, these performances showcase the hard work and passion of the pupils. Every child is given a role, whether it’s singing, playing an instrument, or contributing to an ensemble, ensuring they feel an integral part of the musical community.

Parents are warmly invited to share in these memorable moments, celebrating their children’s achievements and enjoying the uplifting power of music. Through these experiences, pupils not only develop technical skill but also confidence, collaboration, and a deep appreciation for the arts - preparing them to embrace life with creativity and harmony.

Our community, our world

“A strong community is where individuals come together, support one another, and create something greater than themselves.”

We encourage our pupils to see themselves as active contributors to the world around them, helping them understand the impact of their actions. From raising significant funds for chosen charities to participating in local initiatives, our children embrace the values of kindness, responsibility, and compassion. Through these meaningful experiences, they develop an understanding of their role in creating positive change and a desire to engage with their community.

Our school warmly welcomes children of all faiths and none, fostering an inclusive environment built on respect and understanding. While our ethos is rooted in Christian values, we focus on universal principles such as fairness, empathy, and a sense of shared humanity. This diversity enriches the learning environment and helps pupils grow into open-minded individuals who can navigate the wider world with confidence and sensitivity.

One of the most cherished events in our calendar is the annual carol service at the magnificent St Edmundsbury Cathedral. Every pupil, from Reception upwards, plays a role in this special occasion, bringing the whole community together to celebrate the season. The joy of music, the warmth of togetherness, and the pride in the children’s contributions make this a truly unforgettable tradition.

What our community says...

Choosing the right school is a big decision, and who better to share the South Lee experience than our parents and pupils?

Here’s what our community has to say about life at South Lee –from the nurturing environment to the endless opportunities that help every child thrive.

What Our Parents Say:

"We’re so happy that the boys have joined South Lee. It’s hard to put into words just how much they’re enjoying everything, and we ’ re delighted with how well they’ve settled in. This is all thanks to the incredible support from your outstanding team and the warm welcome from their fellow pupils. We truly appreciate everything you ’ ve done to make this opportunity possible for them."

“Our first week at South Lee has been so delightful! I feel very scattered and unorganised because we don’t have our furniture and usual belongings, but I haven’t had to worry about my children at all this past week! Thanks to you all!”

"I can’t thank the teachers at South Lee Prep school enough for going above and beyond, by answering emails well after your working hours to assure that my child is ok. Mrs Catchpole and her staff are absolutely amazing and these little things matter a lot. This is what makes South Lee so special and stand out."

“When we arrived here in 2021, my daughter was 2.5 years old. We are a military family and didn’t have any community or support. Once I found this school, everything clicked. My daughter flourished, I found friends, and people who cared so much about us. Not just about school hours. But about us. My daughter four years later, calls some of her teachers her aunts, because she loves them as much as family, and to be honest, they have become our family. South Lee has the most amazing way of embracing you as you are, and making you happier. I have never once worried for her safety, or her happiness. Every single staff member and teacher not just knows, but cares about each child. They work tirelessly to support each one in the way they need. I’ve seen families leave, and a short while come back, because the love and care along with the academics far exceed anywhere. This school has high academic standards, but they put in the work for the children to achieve them. Our lives will forever be positively impacted by South Lee, and I’ll be forever grateful for the love they have given us. ”
