For Southington, 2012 held many focal points, with a plethora of ups and downs to keep residents on their toes, waiting to see what would happen next. Eventually, it would lead us here, the grand finale of 2012, the culmination of everything that’s happened – good and bad – with the added excitement of heading into a new year, full of possibilities and opportunities. While looking forward is an exciting aspect, let’s take a few minutes and recount some of the bigger stories that happened this year in town. -Julie Sopchak, editor

Year in review: 2012 thony Tranquillo met the end of his 39-year tenure due to poor job performance. Jim Grappone was named interim town engineer and eventually took the official title and currently acts as town engineer. - Due to redistricting in the State of Connecticut, Southington acquired another representative at the State Capitol: state Rep. Al Adinofli of the 103rd District, a Republican, was re-elected in November and currently serves the district. - Southington tried its hand at constructing an outdoor public ice skating rink, with no cost to taxpayers. The first season was a little warm, but the rink got some use and the rink is up again for 2013.

STEPS forum held in March revealed survey results of the patterns and trends of risky behavior of students in town.
- Chuck Motes, who served as Southington’s health director, retired after 12 years of service to the town and 47 in the public health field.
February - The grand list for 2011 was released, showing an overall decrease of 8.57 percent. The downturn was mostly attributed to a decline in real estate.

Weichsel served as town manager for 45 years and is regarded as the longest-serving town manager in the country. - Shane Lockwood is announced as the new health director for the SouthingtonPlainville Health District. - Southington’s Town-wide Effort to Promote Success released the results of its second survey distributed to seventh-, ninth-, and 11thgraders – about 1,300 students overall – in the district. The results showed a decrease in students participating in risky behaviors, but a startling result showed an unchanged number of students have attempted suicide. - Town Council decided it would fight the Department of Energy and Environmen-
