and class sizes. Consultant Milone & MacBroom presented its findings and suggested six redistricting scenarios at the Thursday school board meeting. Proposals included redistricting elementary schools, closing Flanders and redistributing students to surrounding schools and redistricting the middle schools. School board Chairman Brian Goralski said the information and scenarios are just a starting point. “None of those models will be the final product,” he said. Goralski hopes to have more information to the public and town officials this fall.

Flanders and Kelley schools have never been renovated and Derynoski hasn’t been significantly renovated since 1992. Before spending money on upgrades, Goralski said it is important to understand the district’s needs. The study identified a 90 percent building utilization rate as ideal. Milone & MacBroom found that among the schools the district plans to renovate, Derynoski, Hatton and Strong had the most underutilized space while Thalberg, Plantsville and Kelley had the least. The study recommended shifting students to under-utilized schools. Projections showed high school and middle school enrollment decreasing, but more elementary students over the next five years.

Southington elementary schools redistricting scenarios Consultants Milone & MacBroom presented six redistricting options for Southington schools. 1.Minor changes to elementary district boundaries to better use existing space in buildings. 2.Eliminates Flanders school and better balances school utilization but puts several schools above the target 90 percent utilization rate. 3.Redistricts elementary schools so that no school is split when graduating to middle schools. It puts schools below the target utilization rate. 4.Eliminates Flanders and redistricts elementary schools so that no school is split when graduating to middle schools. It would require adding space at some schools to accommodate Flanders students. 5.Adjusts elementary and middle school boundaries to avoid split when graduating to middle schools. 6.Eliminates Flanders and adjusts elementary and middle schools boundaries to avoid a split when graduating to middle schools. need for space to accommodate elementary foreign language education and more science and technology programs. Based on enrollment projections, the district will also need nine more K-5 classrooms.

In some scenarios, elementary schools or middle schools were redistricted so students from an elementary school didn’t graduate to different middle schools. Similar redistricting plans were also presented with

and without Flanders School. If closed, students would go to surrounding schools such as Hatton, Kelley and Thalberg. The scenarios can be viewed as maps online at arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/in-

second with two outs. She induced a foul pop that came to rest in first baseman Katie Gundersen’s glove and ignited the celebration.

Sullivan got the save. The win went to Panarella, who allowed two runs on four hits. She fanned three and walked none.

“This is amazing,” said Southington senior and Class LL MVP Chrissy Marotto. “It feels great to get this championship. This is overwhelming. We have an amazing team and I’m so glad we were able to get the win.” Southington, playing in its 23rd state final, used its outs well. The Lady Knights scored four runs on groundouts and another on a sacrifice fly. The other two runs came on an error and a squeeze bunt by Alex Rogers, all on the same play, in the third inning. NFA (21-5) broke the ice with an unearned run in the top of the first inning off Southington sophomore starter Julia Panarella. Leadoff hitter Hailee Schrader reached on an error and was sacraficed over to second base by Julie Vincent. Bailey Comeau, with two outs, came up clutch by lofting a base hit into centerfield for a 1-0 Wilcats lead. Southington made Comeau, the NFA starter, labor in the bottom of the first inning, bringing eight batters to the plate and collecting a pair of runs on groundouts to go up 2-1.

Spencer Davis, Record-Journal

to load the bases for a third time, but Comeau was able to induce a popup to end the inning. “We wanted to come out strong after they scored that first run,” Marotto said. “We wanted to come back. I was ready to go and hit the ball as hard as I could.” NFA tied it 2-2 with a homer by No. 9 hitter Alexandria Burdick. Southington took a 4-2 lead in the third inning in dramatic fashion. Lamson started the inning with a triple to the right-field fence. She came sliding home on a suicide squeeze by Rogers. Meanwhile, Rogers advanced to second and drew a throw. Southington grabbed two more runs in the fourth inning sparked by a lead-off walk drawn by Kayla Pelletier.

that made it a 5-2 game. On the play, Marotto went to third, which put her in position to score on a sacrafice fly to left field by Lamson to cap the inning.

Panarella said she had every pitch in her arsenal working for her on Saturday. “It was a great day for pitching,” she said. “I was hitting my spots so well and we were making plays in the field. Clearly, the hitting was good.”

Southington added a run in the sixth on a Lamson RBI groundout. The play scored Marotto, who had doubled to start the inning.

In the first meeting between these two teams during the regular season, a 5-3 Blue Knights’ win at Southington on April 25, the Wildcats Sullivan came off the bench started to get around on with a key pinch-hit single in Panarella late in the game. Southington coach Davina Hernandez summoned senior Julia Theriault to pitch the seventh and Diane Williams to catch. Theriault was greeted by a pair of infield hits and an error. Julia’s changeup wasn’t working the best today. That affected her ability to get people to miss-hit the ball and swing and miss. I was happy to see Sam come in and pick her up.” Hernandez had confidence her freshman righty would come through. “She’s been a rock all year,” Hernandez said. “She started on JV for us and got a lot of pitching experience. We had her throw a lot of our JV games this year to get her that experience. It showed she’s definitely worth taking a look at in varsity. She showed us she can make an impact.” Marotto was named the game’s MVP. She went 3-for4 on the day with two doubles and three runs scored.

COMMENTARY

The love between a father and daughter Britain’s Moose or Quartet clubs. I met Doris Day in 1955. On the big screen at the Strand Theater on New Britain’s Main Street. Yet, realistically I had known her for years. My dad took me to see her in “Love Me or Leave Me.” I know, what’s a kid doing at an adult movie? She is sitting next to her dad feeling so grown up and thinking this is the best day of her life to be with him and seeing the face of this woman who, in her child’s mind, was as familiar as her mom’s and many aunts because ever since she could remember, the voice of Doris Day could be heard spinning out from her dad’s 78 records: “Gonna take a sentimental

Back in 1997, two years after my dad’s passing, I’m fiddling with the radio dial on my way to having tests on my thyroid and find Doris Day singing with the Les Brown Band on the 1945 classic. The song finishes and, impatient with the one following, I switched the station and instantly I am 11

vorite subject, my best subject,” Rinaldi said. He’s been on the cross country team all four years at St. Paul and was captain this year. Rinaldi has also played baseball and has been golfing for years after starting with his grandfather, father and uncles. His spare time is spent playing sports. “It’s playing basketball in the driveway or playing a round of golf with my dad (Dennis Rinaldi) and friends,” he said. Rinaldi worked at Hawk’s Landing Country Club for the past two summers. This summer he and his family have some travel plans including visiting the Washington D.C. area so that his younger brother, Jeremy Rinaldi, can check out colleges.

Jordan Rinaldi, 18, is the valedictorian for St. Paul Catholic High School’s Class of 2019. Rinaldi plans to attend Georgetown University in the fall. Dave Zajac, Record-Journal

Jordan Rinaldi first took notice of Georgetown after his brother mentioned it. He expects D.C. to have internships and other opportunities once he’s graduated. Although he hopes to pursue

sports analytics, he’s open to business or government careers as well.

“I’m excited for him getting into Georgetown,” she said. “This is a good fit for him.”

His mother, Karen Rinaldi, said he’s excelled in school and has also taken time to volunteer.

As part of the National Honors Society, the class valedictorian tutored with the Bristol Boys and Girls Club. There he helped children with homework and afterwards played games with them.

CROSSWORD ANSWER

SUDOKU ANSWER

He attended Kennedy Middle School in Southington and chose St. Paul over Southington High School due to its smaller size. Southington’s high school is about four times as large as St. Paul in Bristol. He said it’s a close-knit school.

“I just love the community environment,” he said. “Everybody’s really welcoming.” He was helped by upperclassmen, particularly on the cross country team, to navigate his high school career and tried to do so for others. “Don’t be afraid to reach out to people,” he said. jbuchanan@record-journal.com 203-317-2230 Twitter: @JBuchananRJ

New shop offers kids activities, nostalgic candy Joey Calvanese, 3, of Southington, adds a box of Gummy Krabby Patties to his basket at Frootie Tooties Candy & More, 88 Center St., Southington, on June 5.

By Jesse Buchanan Record-Journal staff

Frootie Tooties, a new business in downtown, is part candy shop, part bookstore and part kids’ venue. Mother and daughter owners Treasure Nadwairski and Tara Styring opened the shop, located at 88 Center St., in April as a fun place for kids that also offers nostalgic candy for adults. “It’s a candy shop when you first walk in,” Nadwairski said. “We just want a good place to have fun.” The former insurance office has been transformed with candy racks in the main room. Off to the side and looking out large windows to Center Street is a reading

room with a chalkboard wall, kid’s stools and shelves of books. Farther back in the shop are craft and party rooms. Nadwairski and Styring are still determining hours and the store’s offerings. Right

now they have crafts of the day for $5 and classes with more complex projects, such as cupcake and cookie decorating, sand art and stuff-ateddy. Styring said she rearranged the front windows recently

since customers thought the location was a daycare. Large lollipops are now prominent and the name has changed from Center Street Kids to Frootie Tooties Candy & More. Nadwairski said the shop will offer Friday night dance parties for kids complete with glow sticks. The owners said reaction from customers has been good but that they’re still working to get the word about what the shop offers. “They love the feel of it, the décor,” Styring said. Styring works in the medical field and Nadwairski has a massage studio above Frootie Tootie. The two along with family worked to repaint and decorate the

storefront before opening. “We’re proud of how far we’ve come,” Styring said. The shop was full of customers during the Memorial Day parade and the owners are looking forward to similar business and exposure during the Italian-American festival and other downtown events. Mother and daughter went back and forth discussing how they decided on different aspects of the business. It’s a second job for both of them but could become more. “Who knows where it’ll take us?” Nadwairski said. jbuchanan@record-journal.com 203-317-2230 Twitter: @JBuchananRJ
