Volunteers light trail for event White lights and luminaries glowed Friday night, Dec. 2, along a section of the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail during White Christmas in the Community. The special display was put together by the quick work of about 40 volunteers. Christmas in the Village, organized by the Village of Plantsville Association, and Hospitality Night, organized by the Merchants

of Downtown Southington, were combined this year into White Christmas in the Community. Hayrides on the trail and a trolley united the events, which took place on separate days for the last 30 years. A 0.8-mile section of the trail was illuminated by about 70 wire-lit trees and animals in three Christmas “communities.” Some wire trees consisted of as many as

200 lights. “The theme for the entire event is to put as many white lights out in the community as we can do,” said Rob Flood, vice president of Liberty Bank in downtown Southington. About 1,000 sandbag luminaries lined the trail to light the way for walkers and those taking hayrides. See Trail, A25

This is the first year the community’s two holiday events, Christmas in the Village, organized by the Village of Plantsville Association, and Hospitality Night, organized by the Merchants of Downtown Southington, merged into one event.
