Town talks of trashing plastic bags

Jerky maker’s benefit to help out girl with brain tumor

Town leaders are considering a ban on plastic bags but said more research on the economic impact is needed before a vote is taken.

After 13-year-old Victoria Martins finished her day at Kennedy Middle School last week she spent the rest of that afternoon dousing 40 pounds of beef with teriyaki seasoning.

Town Council Chairman Chris Palmieri brought the proposal to the ordinance review committee after hearing the suggestion from a resident. Conservationists have criticized the use of plastic bags because of concerns about environmental impact.

The beef jerky, Martins’ favorite kind, would then be cured overnight. The next afternoon, Martins then spent several more hours putting the finished product into packaging with a special label. Dan Baril, owner of Mr. B’s Jerky Co. on North Main Street, his wife Christine and daughter Melissa are

Sidewalk space along Center Street is at a premium during the warmer months, with restaurants maximizing outdoor dining and the town trying to make sure there is the required room for pedestrians.

Theresa Malloy, owner of Paul Gregory’s on Center Street, has five tables on the sidewalk during good weather. “People love coming outside. I get a lot of people off the (Farmington Canal) trail,” she said. “They want to

be able to sit outside with their animals coming off the trail.” Restaurants are required to get town approval for sidewalk dining. They’re also required to leave an open path
