Calendar House control at issue at council meeting Blight, alcohol, ordinances also discussed

By Julie Sopchak The Southington Citizen Town Council voted unanimously to approve revisions for the blight ordinance, and tabled an ordinance that would restructure the residing authority of the Calendar House on Monday night.

Southington counts its blessings at Relay for Life

By Rabia Hamid Special to the Citizen Relay for Life, held June 89, is a fundraiser held every year, in towns throughout the nation, to help fight cancer and give loved ones a chance to live longer. This event, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, serves as an annual reminder for people to be thankful for their good health; for those who have survived cancer; as well as

for those who continue to fight.

Relay for Life is one of the longest-standing traditions in Southington, and is the most prominent event the American Cancer Society of Southington holds in the town. This year, there were 67 registered teams, all Connecticut-based, ranging from a variety of places. All 11 schools in the Southington public school system were represented, as well as fami-

lies of survivors, churches, and town clubs.

This year, Robin Guzauckas and Joyce McAloon were co-chairs for the Southington Relay. Guzauckas, who was co-chair for the first time this year was affected by cancer first when her husband was diagnosed, but she formally joined Relay for Life after her father-inlaw died of cancer. Councilor John Barry attempted to add an amendment to the proposed blight ordinance that failed 6-2, with only himself and Councilor Al Natelli voting in favor. The proposed amendment would allow residents to have one car rendered inoperable due to ongoing repairs parked in the driveway for 60 days.

Barry said he liked the ordinance, but thought it went “a little too far,” using an example of a car enthusiast who wants to fix up a car could get cited for blight.

“People should have some rights when they own property,” he said.

Councilor Dawn Miceli voted against Barry’s amendment because she wanted the ordinance to be strong.

“I wanted to see this with more teeth, not less teeth, quite frankly,” she said. “It’s the repeat offenders we have problems with.”

Town Attorney Mark Sciota said each case is subjective, and in the cases Barry brought up would most likely not be an issue. He said the repeat offenders are the true area of concern.

The council also voted to get rid of an alcohol ordinance that prohibited sale of alcohol on Sundays, since the state laws supercede the town’s. Also, the council approved pet therapy dogs to be present on the town green during summer Music on the Green concerts.

“We believe the town manager should really have all the departments reporting to him,” she said.

She said the current Senior Citizens Commission would not be disbanded, but instead hopes it would become a strong advisory commission.

At a public hearing held before the meeting, about the ordinances in question, there was a strong showing for the senior citizens ordinance.

Members of the Calendar House Membership Association voiced strong support for the change, while members of the Senior Citizens Commission stood opposite.

Association Mark White said commission appointees are not reflective of the Calendar House’s members, and it would seem the choices are made through political connections.

“We really would like to see more representation from people in Calendar House,” White said.

Members of the commission spoke out against the proposed changes, including Lynn Maschi, who said she resented being called a “politically appointed” commissioner.

“There are reasons to have commissions – you need to overlook organizations, you need to have oversight,” she said. “I take this position very seriously and I am honored and respected to do it.”

After the hearing, Lounsbury voted to table the motion to pass the ordinance so it could be studied further, the council agreed.

In other business, Lounsbury said the changes in the blight ordinance gave a more clear definition of “blight” and also would crack the whip on repeat offenders.

“Blight ordinance has had a lot of public input,” Lounsbury said. “The problem with it is it’s a fine balance between a person’s individual right to do what they want with their property, and town and community’s right to make sure things are safe and healthy.”

The Southington Education Foundation doled out its latest round of grants last Thursday – a total of $10,000 for four new programs.

“All four represent outstanding effort and creativity,” said Dawn Miceli, SEF chairman. “And our children are truly lucky to have such commendable instructors at the helm.”

Linda Bass-Reilly has already been a beneficiary of the grants, putting funds into Genevieve’s Teaching Garden at Thalberg Elementary School. Again she found herself able to continue the outdoor learning experience through the garden with her program “Sustainable Learning in an Outdoor Classroom” with a grant of Your Town, Your News about $1,600 “We have just so much research going on,” Bass-Reilly said. “And then what we needed was recognition that

we really do have an outdoor classroom, and when you have an outdoor classroom, you need ways to continue the learning.”

She explained how the garden has grown due to participation and help from various town organizations and clubs, with presenters coming in frequently to

Duffany is just 16 years old because he skipped over kindergarten. He found out freshman year that he was at the top of his class. Since then he has worked steadily to keep his status.

“It kind of fluctuated, but I was pretty much this way since freshman year,” he said.

Duffany said he plans to attend Cornell University in the fall to study computer science and eventually get his doctorate degree.

Wilcox, 17, said she plans to attend UConn in the fall with a major in chemical engineering and a minor in business. She hopes to work

STEPS tree symbolic of group’s efforts

It was led by our youth, start to finish. We all need to show our pride for our children who are making Southington a better place.”

Southington Youth Prevention Coordinator Kelly Leppard said, “For a coalition that is only in the fourth year of its existence and year three of our Drug Free Communities Grant, we’re starting to see real changes in our community, from making

kids a priority, to working together as a community to make Southington a great place to grow great kids. The tree is a symbol of our dedication and determination to continue our efforts into the future.”

Among the invited are town and board of education officials, business and professional groups, faith congregations, charity, civic, fraternal and community service organizations who will honor the STEPS mission

along with parents and students who will gather opposite the tennis courts at Rec Park, off of South End Road.

Admission and parking is free.

The Southington Youth Council invites everyone to join them after the brief dedication for a year-end potluck picnic. Bring your own and enjoy the fun.

Tuesday, June 26, will be a “landmark” day in Southington. The whole town is invited to join the rapidly growing STEPS coalition and the Youth Council of Southington in the dedication of a tree that will serve as a unique symbol of the town’s support of youth. The tree dedication is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Recreation Park of Southington. (Rain date: June 28th.)

STEPS, Southington’s Town-wide Efforts to Promote Success, is a community initiative aimed at developing healthy and successful youth. STEPS has successfully caught on in Southington because of the energetic support of volunteers who represent every sector of the town.

Last year, a group of high school and middle school students, members of the

STEPS Marketing and Public Relations Subcommittee, embarked on a project to plant a series of trees to grow in Southington as living symbols of the mission of STEPS: growing great kids.

T h e Southington Parks and Recreation Department provided a site and h e l p e d MAPS plant the first tree, a Japanese ivory silk lilac, a gift of Ali’s Nursery.

This year, MAPS approached Mathieu Memorial Monuments, which donated a polished granite stone to be engraved with the STEPS logo. This marked the first STEPS tree which will grow, along with local kids, towards a healthy and success-

Also it will be used as a quick reference when kids have questions, because they are only allotted so much time before recess is over.

Nhi Michaud, Michelle DeLaRosa, and Chanel Curtin received a grant of about $1,500 for their program, “What’s Cooking at Thalberg?” which will implement an after-school cooking program. Michaud said she got the idea because she frequently rewards her students with her own culinary treats.

“If my students are doing well,” she said, “I’ll give them an incentive and say I’m going to make them something new or special and nutritious.”

DeLaRosa said the program would incorporate math by using measurements in the recipes, nutrition, and also technolog.

The program will acquire a Nook, which will be used to

download recipe applications and cookbooks.

“We’re so excited, I love cooking, too, and I want to learn from [Michaud] and the community and the kids,” DeLaRosa said. “This is something after school that’s exciting.”

Curtin said the program will have a business lesson in it, since the kids will not only make the food, but will have a chance to sell it and put the funds they raise back into the program; making it a self-sustaining endeavor.

“They are actually multiplying their recipes so they can become little entrepreneurs and sell their baked goods to the school students,” Curtin said.

“Good Morning, Strong School” is a program developed by Lenore Butler and Paula Knight which received a grant of about $3,000. Butler said students in her class started asking if they could start writing and producing a newspaper. She explained the program would teach writing and

communication skills like argumentative writing and interviewing.

“A lot of the common course standards can be pulled into the program,” Butler said.

Knight explained the technological aspect which will allow students to not only create the content to be produced, but also to produce news broadcasts and burn these onto DVDs. “It will be a lot of fun to see the creativity we can pull through with this,” Knight said.

Linda clock received a grant of about $2,300 for a grant that will apply townwide, “App-titude for ELLs Success,” a program designed to help the English Language Learners students in the town. Clock explained there are 116 children who speak 16 different languages in the district.

“Many of them, they’ve assimilated into our Southington community, leaving behind their culture, their family, friends, and homeland,” Clock said.

“And unfortunately the lack of technological resources is prevalent in their new home.”

With the grant, four iPads will be purchased so students will have access to applications to help them with translations. Also, Clock said the first project they will do is to reconnect with their homeland culture, family and friends.

“Receiving this grant affords our Southington English Language Learners the opportunity to better succeed in our competitive school environment,” Clock said.

Miceli shared an analogy with the audience, saying teachers must open doors for students, but the students have to actually walk through.

“I like to think Southington Education Foundation is one of the hinges that helps teachers open the door for our students,” she said.

She also announced the recipient of the Apple Vanguard Award, Ryan Lucas,

managing partner at the Outback Steakhouse on Queen Street. The award is given to someone who has been “friends to the SEF through their time, talent and treasure.”

“He has played a critical role in the foundation’s success from day one,” Miceli said, explaining the SEF has held its annual fundraiser at the restaurant for the past three years.

“Ryan doesn’t just help out the Southington Education Foundation,” Miceli said. “He’s also terrific with all the schools in Southington.”

Team member, Lisa Petropolous said, “I have been doing [Relay for Life] for six years with the Chulberts and like to do it as a way to celebrate the fact that people have survived this illness.”

American Cancer Society committee member for five years, Jamie Brennan said she “wanted to get involved because [I have] so many friends affected by cancer, who’ve had cancer, and who’ve kept on with involvement afterwards.”

Survivor Nancy Peraue said, “it’s a great pleasure to serve the survivors, to meet them all, and to do this for them.”

Some even participate in ACS Relay for Life events throughout the year within different states, such as California and Massachusetts.

Kristie Uliasz, member of “Team Believe” at the Southington Relay, has raised over $5,000 through her participation and walking for breast cancer, as well as ovarian cancer in Boston and San Diego.

Uliasz said, “I’m spending my birthday at Relay because I feel it’s wonderful to support the survivors and raise money for awareness.”

Kelly Warner, also a member of “Team Believe,” joined for her sister who suffers from ovarian cancer. Warner said participating in the relay gives her a “sense of fulfillment.”

Jenny Warner is an ovarian cancer survivor who has participated in the Southington Relay for three years and she is also captain of “Team Believe/Wings of Hope.” Warner said, “No one is untouchable to cancer; it can happen to anyone at any given time, and it really hits home when it happens to yourself.”

Miss Southington Pre-teen division 2012, Kaylee Warner said, “I’m here to support the team captain, my mom, in the fight for curing cancer and for raising support.”

Liz Manning, of “Team Believe,” said the Relay “is a great cause and is very touching.” She added, “so much heart is involved in the Relay process.”

In a closing statement, McAloon’s quote resonated: “Everybody is here because they want to find a cure,” she said.

Ford-Cooperman, 18, has perhaps the biggest aspirations of all, however. For privacy reasons, she only said she would be attending a “prestigious” university on the east coast, where she would take up a double major of drama and political science. She hopes to become a revered playwright, and also one day, president of the United States.

All three said they are looking forward to different aspects of college. Duffany, for one, is eager for student interactions and working with other students who have similar interests.

“I feel like you can have teams of people who are going to help you and sometimes they can teach you even more than your professor can,” he said. “You don’t really get that in high school.”

Wilcox said she is excited to take courses she is interested in and focus on her major.

“We don’t have to take all

the history classes and things that I don’t enjoy,” Wilcox said. “I have all math and science for my first schedule this semester – that’s exciting.”

Ford-Cooperman said she is excited to be moving up to the next level and working with professors and students who are dedicated to their education.

“For college I’m really excited for the classes and professors that are so knowledgeable in the given area and the students who are passionate about their given major or their particular interests,” she said.

All three have been involved in extra-curricular activities while at SHS. Duffany has been part of the FIRST Robotics team, the Cyber Knights, for all four years, taking a role as programmer for the past two. “You can come back and mentor for robotics, but you can only experience the actual robotics experience to its fullest extent when you’re a student,” he said. “So I’m going to miss learning all these new things.”

ject Lead the Way program to help her with her engineering skills, and took AP chemistry to prepare her for the chemistry part. She was also a member of the indoor/outdoor track teams and cross country.

“There’s something for everyone,” she said. “Both classwise as well as extracurricular.”

Ford-Cooperman had a laundry list of extra-curriculars and activities to eat up her spare time. She was a member of the school’s drama club all four years, Key Club, Model United Nations, and The Emblem, to name a few. She added her university has an emphasis on community service, which she en-

joys and is looking forward to.

“Enjoy high school, don’t stress too much,” she said.

“But stress a little bit.”

SHS graduation is schedule for Tuesday, June 19, at 5:30 p.m. The ceremony will be held outdoors on the football field if weather permits.

Alumni golf tournament St. Paul Catholic High School, Bristol, will hold its fifth annual Alumni Golf Tournament on Thursday, June 21, at Hawk’s Landing Country Club, 201 Pattonwood Drive.

This year’s Tournament Host is Brian Farrell ’86 – Ringler Associates. Its prevalence is highest between May and September.

The following are ways to avoid contracting the disease:

How to Properly Remove a Tick Ticks should be removed immediately using tweezers. Pull the tick upward without twisting to avoid leaving part of the tick in the skin. Wash the area with soap and water and apply an antibiotic cream. Call your primary care physician to report the tick bite. Save the tick for later identification. Lyme ticks removed within 24 hour of exposure are very unlikely to transmit Lyme disease.

Adult summer reading Adult residents 18 and older in Southington are invited to participate in the adult summer reading program, “Everything British.” Pick up an “Everything British” entry form at the display by the kiosk. Summer program details with some reading suggestions will begin Monday, June 18. Read a book or listen to an audio book, then

record it on the “Everything British” entry form for a chance to be a Lucky Reader.

Weekly drawings from completed entries will be on Mondays beginning June 25 to Aug. 27, one entry for each book read, deposit in the “Everything British” entry box each week by Friday before closing. Completed entries will be included in the weekly drawing for one reader who will receive a Southington Chamber Mall discount card, Bertucci’s discount coupon, and other surprises.

At the end of the “Everything British” Summer Reading program, on Monday, Aug. 27, all completed weekly entries will be included in the final “Lucky Reader” drawing for a new e-reader.

In collaboration with Foodshare of Hartford, Giving Back sets up a mobile food pantry every other Tuesday at 9 a.m. On Tuesdays, primarily produce is distributed, depending on availability, also breads and some non-perishables.

On every other Saturday, 9:30 a.m., Giving Back offers a more substantial variety of groceries, including when available, toiletries and infant products.

The next distribution is June 23.

Josephine Manuele Josephine (Bertuca) Manuele, 63, passed away on Thursday, June 6, 2012 at Hartford Hospital. She was the beloved wife of Joseph Manuele.

She was born on May 11, 1949 in Pianopoli, Italy, the daughter of the late Peter and Concetta (Greco) Bertuca. She was co-owner of Southington Glass Company for the past 28 years.

Josephine was a great cook and enjoyed cooking for her family.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her three children, Teresa Picone, Angelo and Anthony Manuele; her cherished grandchildren, Joey, Marc, Vince, and Rebecca. She also leaves a brother, Frank Bertuca, and a sister, Rita MacKenzie, and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and her loving family from

Southington Glass Company.

The family wishes to give a heartfelt thank you to the doctors and staff at Hartford Hospital for their loving care and kindness.

Funeral services were held from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home to St. Dominic Church. Burial was held at St. Thomas Cemetery. Donations may be made in her

memory to the CT Children’s Medical Center, 282 Washington St., Hartford, CT 06106.

Theresa D. Monte, 79, passed away on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at Hospital of Central Connecticut, New Britain campus. She was the widow of Carmen Monte.

She was born in New Britain on March 28, 1933, the daughter of the late Louis and Pauline (Zydel) Kowaleski. Prior to her retirement in 1994, she, along with her late husband, founded and ran Ace Appliance Service and Ace Appliance Parts for many years.

Tess was an active member of Mary Our Queen Church.

She was a past president of the parish council, a member of the finance board and the Ladies Guild of Mary Our Queen. She was also a CCD teacher and was a driving force behind the construction of the CCD center at Mary Our Queen. On March 28, 2004, she received the St. Joseph Archdiocesan Medal of Appreciation at the Cathedral of St. Joseph from Hartford Archbishop Henry J. Mansell in recognition of her exemplary service to her parish She was a former member of the Southington Board of Assessment Appeals. She also served as Justice of the Peace for many years and she was a former member of the Democratic Town Committee.

She is survived by her children, James Monte, Jeffrey Monte and wife Danielle, all of Southington, and Eric Monte and wife Kimberly of Tomball, Texas.

She also leaves five grandchildren: Jennifer, Jessica, Ryan, Grace, and David Monte; a sister, Mary Case, of Plainville, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, David Monte, and several brothers and sisters.

The funeral was held from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home to Mary Our Queen.

Burial was at St. Thomas Cemetery.

Bread for Life reaches goal

To the editor: On Sunday, May 6, Bread for Life participated in Foodshare’s Annual Walk Against Hunger. I would like to thank the walkathon chairperson, Susan King, for organizing this extraordinary effort. In addition, it is with gratitude that I extend my heartfelt thanks to the Bread for Life board members and to the many volunteers who formed

teams to participate in the walk. I also wish to thank the many friends of Bread for Life who made monetary contributions to this event.

Our teams raised nearly $5,000.

You continue to give to those who may have less even when the economy makes giving a little more difficult. Your generosity has allowed Bread for Life to collaborate with Southington Community Services to expand the hours of our pantry and to expand the number of people we serve.

We have also been able to increase our services to local senior citizens and the home bound, and to collaborate with the Southington Board of Education to add a breakfast program to all Southington schools. None of this would have been possible without you.

Thank you again for putting your best foot forward at this year’s Foodshare Walkathon.

DePaolo Middle School announces Students of the Month for June

In sixth-grade, Claire Macioce, Julia McPherson, and Isabella Scalise were selected by their teams. Macioce is the daughter of Rick and Kyra Macioce and received the Connecticut Arts and Music award in fifth-grade.

She was selected for the MATHCOUNTS program and volunteers at the Southington Community Center. Claire plays the cello in the school orchestra and is a member of the select strings group. McPherson is the daughter of Nora and Scott McPherson and has consistently been on the honor roll. She assists at the Calendar House as part of the Leadership Program and plays the flute in the school band. Julia volunteers with the Mill Foundation and for her church vacation bible school. Scalise is the daughter of Jonathan and Janet Scalise and was recognized at the Principal’s Breakfast this year. She is a part of the

Environmental Club and plays soccer and softball for the town. Isabella recently participated in the Relay for Life.

In seventh-grade, Adam Theriault, Emily Gibney, and Keanan John were selected by their teams. Theriault is the son of Cynthia and Ricky Theriault and has been on the honor roll since entering middle school. He is a an altar server at St. Aloysius Church and is part of the Environmental Club at DePaolo. Adam has played football for the town since he was 5 years old. Gibney is the daughter of Patricia and Michael Gibney and is a member of the National Junior Honor Society. She is a part of the Giving Back Girls and is a Peer Advocate. Emily is a part of Southington Brass, wind ensemble, and concert choir. John is the son of Kon and Melissa John and made honor roll the first three terms this year. He has

volunteered at the Calendar House as part of the Leadership Program and was on the cross country team. Keanan plays football for the town and basketball for a travel team.

In eighth-grade, Jessica Lee, Matthew Becotte, and Jason Tosta were selected by their teams. Lee is the daughter of Kim and Jeff Lee and has been on the honor roll.

She was selected as a cheerleader at Southington High School for next year. Jessica volunteers at the Calendar House as part of DePaolo’s Leadership Program. Becotte is the son of Patricia and Paul Becotte and has earned the honor roll all three terms this year. Matt was on the DePaolo basketball team and plays basketball and football for the town. Megan Bowes, daughter of James and Donna Bowes has been awarded the yearly $1,200 given to a graduating senior from Southington High School who has contributed to the cultural arts. This award known as the Vicki Michanczyk Cul-

tural Award, named after the late Michanczyk, choreographer and dance teacher. Bowes ranked 15 out of 461 seniors in this year’s graduating class.

She has been recognized for her scholastic achievement in the national honor society and the French honor society. She was recognized for having the highest grade point average in English for 2010 and 2011. She served as president of the drama club and has participated in unified theatre, orchestra and marching band. She has

been accepted to the Tisch School of Arts at New York University.

Georgianna Sherman, 86, beloved mother and grandmother and precious motherin-law, of Southington, died May 25, 2012, at the Summit at Plantsville. She was the wife of the late Arthur Lucius Sherman.

She was born July 9, 1925, in New Britain, to the late George and Cora (Mallory) Stephenson, she had been a Southington resident since 1955. Before her retirement, she worked in customer service at New England Dairy

and in the Southington School System lunch program. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Grace United Methodist Church and the Red Hatters. She also volunteered at the hospital. She graduated from New Britain High School, class of 1943.

She is survived by her son, Kenneth Sherman and wife, Marie, of Bristol; and her daughter, Audrey Vey and husband, John, of Southington, with whom she made her home; three grandsons, Kenneth Sherman II, Joseph Sherman and Jeffery Sherman; her dear friend, Faith

Obituaries Maureen Beers Maureen Beers, 75, passed away on Friday, June 8, 2012 at the Summit of Plantsville after a long illness.

B o r n April 26, 1937 in New Britain, she was the daughter of the late William L. and Grace E. (Rivers) Beers. Maureen retired from the Travelers and Amica Insurance companies. She was a parishioner of St. Dominic Church, a member of the YMCA and the Spring Lake No. 9 Social Committee.

She is survived by her sister, Margaret Griffin, of Southington; a brother, Michael Beers and wife Carol, of Oklahoma; two nieces, Susan Beers, of Ellington, and Vickie (Beers) Porter, of Oklahoma; and several great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, William J. Beers and wife Lucille.

Lady Knights fail to rise to the occasion

By Sean Krofssik Special to The Citizen No. 5 Amity pounded out 17 hits and took advantage of four errors by top-seeded Southington June 8 to win the CIAC Class LL state softball championship 10-6 at DeLuca Field in Stratford.

Amity (23-5 overall) scored three runs in the first inning and added five more in its fifth off Southington starter Jordyn Moquin and reliever Kendra Friedt to earn its fifthever state crown and first since 2005.

“Usually you save your best for last,” Southington coach John Bores said. “We saved our worst for last. We couldn’t have played any worse. Defensively, we were making errors.

We were chasing three after one inning and we came back with two, but they just kept (hitting the ball).”

The game could not have started any worse for the Blue Knights. In the top of the first inning, Jaqueline Ferraiolo smacked a three-run blast to give Amity an immediate 3-0 advantage.

The Spartans’ rally started innocently enough with an infield hit by game MVP Catherine Semones (4-for-5, two doubles, three runs, RBI). Emily Fox then bunted and reached on a throwing error to put runners on second and third for Ferraiolo (3-for-5, four RBIs, two runs), who deposited a 3-2 fastball over the leftcenter field fence for the early 3-0 edge.

“I hoped it was out,” Ferraiolo said of her fourth and biggest homer of the spring.

“After I saw it go over it was a great feeling. We all lifted (weights) at the beginning of the year. That means a lot coming into a season like this and

it paid off for us.”

Southington showed its mettle in the bottom of the first inning. Amity starter Dana Blydenburg walked Nicole Rossitto and Sarah Carangelo on eight pitches.

Both runners moved up on a double steal with no outs and Sydney Ferrante delivered a two-run single through a drawn in infield to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Moquin pitched out of more trouble in the second.

The junior escaped a basesloaded no-out situation against Amity’s No. 2, 3 and 4 hitters. Moquin got two force outs at home plate and struck out cleanup hitter Jenna DiLorenzo to end the threat.

Moquin (21-3) was lifted after giving up four runs, eight hits and one walk with a strikeout.

Fox slapped a ball off Friedt in the shortstop hole that scored Semones and put Amity up 4-2.

Amity exploded for five runs in the top of the fifth inning to go ahead 9-2. The Spartans got RBI hits from Semones, Ferraiolo and DiLorenzo. Two more runs scored on an error on a squeeze bunt by Taylor Baker.

“We just didn’t have our D together and that’s it,” Southington third baseman Alyssa Dumphy said. “I thought we had a good chance.

We kept fighting but it didn’t work out.”

Bores said the errors were just too much to overcome.

“You’re not going to beat a Little League team giving up

10 runs,” Bores said. “Ten runs, 17 hits, four runs and four errors and I thought the four errors were very generous. I think we should have had seven or eight myself. We could not have played any worse.”

Carangelo added a RBI single, scoring Caitlyn Downes, in the fifth inning that pulled Southington within 9-3. A single by Ferrante (3-for-4, three RBIs) gave the Blue Knights runners on second and third with one out, but Blydenburg wiggled out of the jam. The southpaw got Rachel Harvey to ground out and Moquin to fly out to left to end the threat.

Moquin reentered the game and pitched the final two innings.

Verderame is hoping that momentum continues.

“We’re looking forward to having a great year. We’re ready to go,” said the second-year head man. “We’re going to take the hot streak the high school team rode out, and we’re going to continue it this summer.”

Verderame has reason to be optimistic. Last season, Post 72 advanced to the quarterfinals of the state tournament after failing to even qualify for the event six years in a row. Six guys from Post 72’s 2011 club are back this summer, mixing with some promising newcomers.

The Post 72 pitching staff is highlighted by Justin Robarge, Craig Frobel, Brett Susi and Christian Callahan.

Ben Nichols appears to be Post 72’s big bat. Teammate Matt Sirois is another guy who can hit, along with several others.

“We have a solid lineup from top to bottom,” said Verderame. “We’re going to make a lot of things happen.”

Verderame is also pleased with his defense, and believes Post 72’s Ted Shaw has the potential to be the best shortstop in Zone 1. “He

makes all the plays,” said the coach. “I’m really looking for him to be the captain of the defense.”

It appears Post 72 has all the components necessary to challenge for the zone championship. Of course, other clubs have the same goal in mind.

“There are 10 teams in the zone, but only three or four truly have aspirations of winning the zone,” said Verderame. “To do that, in this league you have to keep people healthy and you have to win the close games, those 2-1, 3-2 games. That’s the difference between being 23-5 and 16-12.”

Post 72 struggled through some rebuilding years during the past decade, but Verderame believes the local program – both the Junior and Senior team — is now on solid footing.

“We kind of lost our swagger a little bit as a program,” said Verderame.

“We want people to recognize that Southington is a powerhouse at not only the high school level, but Legion too.”

Post 72 earns split with Bristol

Southington Post 72 ran into Zone 1 power Bristol Post 2 right out of the gate this season, and walked away with a split.

“To have them as the first team we faced was a good test for us,” said Post 72 manager Marc Verderame. “Obviously, they’re the class of the zone.

But I think we out-played them in both games. We’ll take the split, but I think we have a better team, and the kids know it.”

Bristol, with nine All-State players on its roster, prevailed 2-1 in Game 1.

Craig Frobel went the distance in a losing effort, scattering seven hits.

Post 72’s offense didn’t make things easy on Frobel.

The locals manufactured just two hits, the highlight being a RBI single by Dave Palladino.

Elbow pain is prevalent and should not be ignored

Physical therapist and athletic trainer Kathleen Kane displays some easy ways to strengthen one’s elbow. 1: With palms flat against a wall or floor, and fingers straight, gently lean in towards fingers. Do this for 15 seconds, three times. 2: With elbow straight, make a fist, and pull down gently. Do this for 15 seconds, three times.

3: Support forearm and slowly rotate a hammer so the palm goes from up to down. Do this for three sets of 10 repetitions. Choke up on the hammer handle as needed. 4: Support forearm. Holding a light weight, raise just the knuckle upwards. Do this for three sets of 10 repetitions. pain, Kane urges young players not to ‘tough it out.’ It’s important to address the issue.

This is the time of year for baseball, golf, tennis; the list goes on.

It’s also the time of year for an increase in elbow injuries.

Kathleen Kane, a physical therapist and athletic trainer, says elbow injuries are common, and those caused by throwing and swinging are often the result of one’s core not being strong enough.

“Whatever you do in sports, if you don’t have it between your hips and your chest, it’s going to affect somewhere,” she said.

“You’re fine until you’re 12 years old, but that weak link is going to catch up with you.”

That’s why it’s important for athletes – even weekend warriors – to work on their overall physical fitness.

“You don’t play a sport to get in shape. You get in shape to play your sport,” said Kane. “Your body conditioning is just as important as playing your sport.”

“You have to learn to make time” for a fitness routine, she said.

Kane explained that the elbow is comprised of three bones, which come together at the joint. Bones are linked by ligaments, and muscle is connected to bone by tendons.

Because their arm bones are not fully formed, Kane said young baseball players – pitchers in particular – are susceptible to elbow injuries.

To dissuade such issues, Little League baseball players are held to a strict pitch count. Kane is all for that, but said parents also need to be aware of how much their kids are throwing when they’re not in uniform.

According to Kane, telltale signs of an elbow injury include pain and swelling in the area. Also, the elbow may be warm to the touch.

“An injury can happen by doing too much in one week, going from basketball season to baseball season and not being ready,” Kane said. “Or it can happen in one pitch.”

“It’s a tough loss and I definitely thought we should have had it,” Harvey said. “I don’t think we were nervous but we just had butterflies and some early-game jitters. We fought back in games before. I thought we had a great chance to come back. I love my team.

Eight-week fitness program

Eight Weeks to a Better You is a free fitness program offered by the Southington Community YMCA through collaboration with the Southington Health Department. Participants must be a Southington resident and 18 years or older.

This program is open to nonYMCA members. Female participants have the option of using the Southington YMCA’s Women’s Health and Wellness Center during this program.

Participants will be guided

through a fitness consultation and equipment orientation by certified staff and progress will be charted. The program runs from June 25 to Aug. 17, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Babysitting service is available for a fee. Registration is ongoing and must be made in person at the Southington Community YMCA Membership Services Desk. Enrollment in this program is limited to one session per participant. Space is limited.

Book collections raise funds

Two Southington organizations — Elks Lodge No. 1669 and the American Legion Auxiliary, Kiltonic Unit 72 — are benefiting from separate book drops.

The collection, provided by the company Got Books, generates funds that are used by the organizations.

The American Legion Auxiliary has two book collection bins, one in the rear parking lot of the Southington YMCA on

High Street and the second at the Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike entrance to the drive-in.

The Elks Club’s book drop is located next to the Lodge, located at 114 Main St. The community is welcome to donate unwanted books, DVDs, CDs and records at any time.

Italian class The Southington Sons of Italy Club will sponsor a class in “Conversational Italian” starting on Mon-

day Sept. 17, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., on Mondays to Dec. 3.
