Proposed ‘safe walk to school’ a half-million dollar upgrade

On Saturday, April 28, residents responded in record numbers to the Medical Return Program’s call for expired and no longer needed drugs.

The scene at the Southington Water Department was a steady stream of cars from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as 483 cars stopped by to drop off outdated prescription and overthe-counter drugs. The pro-

gram disposes of such drugs to avoid contamination of the water supply through the use of routine waste systems. The program also is an opportunity to remove drugs from homes where they could be available to those who might abuse them.

School board hires three new principals

“I’m excited for change,” said Madancy, a Wallingford resident. Madancy taught for seven years at Parker Farms School in Wallingford before moving on to administration at Orange Avenue School in Milford and Pumpkin Delight School in Milford.

Quinn was assistant principal at Derynsoki School before moving to Thomas Hooker in 2008. Quinn said the opening at South End is an opportunity for him to return his administrative roots. He said it was a chance he couldn’t pass up.

Bennett and Quinn will make $123,121 a year; Madancy will make $132,675.

The American Legion Post 72 annual picnic for the Legion family and friends will be Saturday, June 9 from 1 to 7 p.m. It will take place at the Polish Falcon Nest 307, 33 Knowles Avenue, in Southington. Sparkles the clown will be on hand to entertain the children, and there will also be numerous games throughout the day.

Children under 12 are free and there is a fee for adults.

The American Legion Post 72 in Southington will hold a special vote for life membership for two of its members.

The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday May 8, all Legion members of Post 72 are asked to attend.

During the meeting at Town Hall, the board unanimously approved each of the appointments. When the voting was completed, the new officials celebrated and spoke with their soon-to-be colleagues.

“Professionally, Southington has everything I want,” said Bennett, now principal of West Hill Elementary School in Rocky Hill.

She said the Southington school district provides a sense of team and a closeknit community.

Madancy said he’s excited to be a part of a district that has always impressed him and shows a strong support for education.

Relay to honor Champagnes, champions of the cause

Starting her professional career as a hairdresser in 1978, Rosemary Champagne, owner of Hair Expo in Southington, hardly could have imagined the unexpected the turns her life would take. She would have found it hard to believe that, years later, she’d author a book, now

though difficult, treatment chemotherapy and radiation.

Later, she was diagnosed with large cell lymphoma, a rapidly growing cancer. She opted in favor of being one of the early stem cell transplant patients at Yale New Haven Hospital. The stem cell transplant required her to undergo heavy dose chemotherapy and radiation therapy. As a result, the large cell lymphoma was halted and destroyed. Her low grade lymphoma still acts up on occasion and with her body no longer responding to chemo, Champagne is listed for a transplant.

Champagne has not been the sole beneficiary of the care and treatment she has received. She was proactively involved with Relay For Life from the first event

Champagne, a 28-year survivor of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, has shown courage and determination through the years and has become a leader in the perennial fight against cancer through Southington’s Relay for Life.

Champagne has been sustained by a faith in God, leading-edge medical science, the hope and support of others, a steadfast positive outlook and by her husband, Jim, her rock in life.

Rosemary and Jim Champagne will be honored by the Southington Knights of Columbus at a dinner-dance and evening of entertainment on Friday, May 11, at the Elks Club starting at 6:45 pm.

ZBA sees increased interest in backyard flocks

Requests to allow backyard chickens in residential areas are increasingly showing up on town zoning committee agendas.

The farmyard animals, usually kept for fresh eggs or as pets, aren’t always appreciated by neighbors, who fear smell, noise and predators.

Keeping chickens in residential areas requires a special permit granted by the Zoning Board of Appeals.

In the last year, Zoning Enforcement Officer Robert Librandi said at least two special permits have been granted to suburban residents for poultry.

“We have been getting more interest in that,” he said.

During a board meeting Wednesday, two of the five agenda items dealt with chickens in residential zones.

Fullar and Patricia Bennett requested a special permit to have chickens but were denied due to deed restrictions which prohibit poultry, and objections from neighbors.

Bennett said the chickens, a joint project with Fullar, were intended for fresh eggs and wouldn’t be a nuisance to the neighborhood. “The hens are quieter than a dog in some cases,” she said.

Residents of Reussner Road and other nearby streets said the chickens would attract foxes and coyotes, which could harm children or pets. Neighbors also said the neighborhood

“We oppose the noise, odor and diseases that chickens can acquire, along with the predators that they could bring,” said Stephen Elliot, a Cedar Drive resident. “It certainly will not enhance property values and could cause property values to deteriorate.”

An Andrews Street resident, Rebecca Brown, was ordered to appear before the appeals board Wednesday after complaints were made that she had a rooster among her chickens. Brown had received a special permit for chickens, but roosters are prohibited in residential areas.

Brown said Wednesday that she’d removed the rooster, which had been accidentally bought in a group of what she thought were female chicks.

Librandi said up to a dozen chickens are allowed on residential properties as long as the animals’ enclosure isn’t more than 400 square feet and is at least 30 feet from other properties and 100 feet from the street.

Librandi said that while not in the town’s zoning regulations, roosters are also prohibited.

Librandi said it’s also good to contact neighbors before going before the board.

“If you just talk to your neighbors and let them know, you could save yourself a lot of time and figure out which way the wind blows,” Librandi said. “You want to talk to the neighborhood first before you do anything.”

Joseph LaPorte, a Zoning Board of Appeals member, said he has concerns about allowing chickens so close to adjacent properties. He said neighbors often have numerous concerns when people attempt to get a permit for chickens.

“I think they need bigger pieces of property,” LaPorte said. “Most neighbors don’t want that closeness with the chickens.”

“I think it is an issue,” he said.

tax increases of 14.5 percent or greater for some taxpayers.

Town Council Chairman Edward Pocock III, a Republican, said the steep increases would affect only a small percentage of residents. He said Democrats are trying to find issue with the responsible budget put forward by the Republican-controlled Board of Finance.

Pomposi said at a Town Council budget hearing earlier this week that the increased property tax rate coupled with the results of revaluation would mean a major tax hike for residents.

“Taxes can do funny things (after revaluations). I don’t think enough attention was given to that fact when this budget was being determined,” Pomposi said.

He said that, for residents whose property assessment stayed constant, the proposed rate increase from 24.28 to 27.8 mills would mean a 14.5 percent tax increase. If property assessments were to increase, resi-

dents could face higher tax increases, Pomposi said.

“That’s the real number,” he said at the hearing.

One mill represents $1 of taxes on each $1,000 of assessed property value.

The town’s grand list decreased by 8.57 percent from 2010 to 2011, the result of revaluation and the housing market crash in 2008, according to Town Assessor Brian Lastra. The town revaluated properties this year, updating their market values from the 2005 estimations.

Pocock said that, since the overall town property value went down, most residents will face tax increases of less than 14.5 percent.

“Most of us dropped, and we’re going to see less, not more,” Pocock said. “It’s spread across the board.”

He said Pomposi was dealing in “voodoo economics.”

“He’s way off base,” Pocock said. “I’m stunned that somebody formerly on the Board of Finance would take that stance.”

Pocock said without the

tax rate adjustment needed due to revaluation, the proposed rate increase to fund the 2012-13 fiscal year budget would have been less than 1 mill. Democratic Councilor John Barry said he’s concerned about the proposed budget, which adds several Town Hall workers.

“We are expanding government workers when some residents are going to see double-digit tax increases?” he said. “Increasing staffing was not appropriate in this particular year, especially with revaluation.”

Barry said property values rose on several town streets and read a list of those streets at Monday’s hearing.

“There are many houses in Southington that didn’t see a decrease,” Barry said Thursday.

Eco-boutique grand-opening Organizers said the Trashion Show was an opportunity to bring like-minded people together to celebrate Earth Day with a common theme of “make art not trash. All proceeds go to support Evergreen Design Co. and The Sustainable Farm School in Simsbury.

Trashion are garments made from consumer waste and worn by models and dancers.

Materials included newspapers, plastic bags, paper goods, books, old clothing, soda cans, straws and mirrors.

Designers, models, dancers, hair stylists, makeup artists, and musicians all volunteered their time and services for the event. Many of the models were from the area; Gina Pannazzo, Marisa Barnard, Melanie McKinley, Kayla Tilton of Bristol; Olivia Germano of Farmington; Julie Riccio of Plantsville; and Margot Paul of Berlin.

Rachel DeCavage, of Southington, is executive director of the non-profit organization Evergreen Design Company. She will open an eco-inspired boutique in Southington called Sugar Plum. The store, at 98 Main St., will hold a grand-opening fiesta Saturday, May 5, from 6 to 9 p.m.

DeCavage, along with Amy Merli, was event coordinator for the second annual Trashion Fashion Show held at Artspace in Hartford April 21.

The 14th Annual Calvanese Gala Ball was held at the Aqua Turf Saturday night. The event helps support the Calvanese Foundation which contributes to a wide variety of community projects that help the less fortunate, senior citizens and youth of the town. The foundation serves as a tribute to the contributions made to the Southington community by Joe and Kay Calvanese. The couple’s sons, Joe and Chris now operate the Aqua Turf, a property the family developed over the years.

The gala’s honorary chairperson this year was Donna Ayer, who has worked as a director at the Southington Community YMCA for the past 24 years. School Master Plan outlines a series of transportation improvements, whose implementation is slated to be 100 percent funded by the national Safe Routes to School program.

At DePaolo Middle School, 40 percent of the students live within walking distance, or one and a half miles, of the school. Yet only 12 percent of the students choose to walk or bike to school.

Those who do choose to walk or bike have to navigate busy roads, many of which have inadequate, or missing, crosswalks or sidewalks.

In response to these obstacles to active transportation, the Southington SRTS Committee outlined a series of recommendations for improving the existing conditions surrounding DePaolo Middle School.

The two largest infrastructure improvements include the construction of a sidewalk on the north side of Woodruff Street from Pleasant Street west to Skyline Drive and a path from Crest Road to DePaolo Middle School through Memorial Park along a town right of way. This path would also provide greater access to Memorial Park for those who live in the Crest Road neighborhood and on surrounding streets.

Based upon a preliminary assessment, the construction cost will be approximately $500,000.

It is anticipated that the Federal Highway Administration will provide 100 percent of the construction cost up to a maximum limit as determined by the Federal Highway Administration.

That is the motto for family programming at the YMCA Camp Sloper Outdoor Center, 1000 East St. To live up to that motto, the camp will offer a greater variety of family program opportunities. On Saturday, May 5, the YMCA Camp Sloper Outdoor Center will host the first Family Adventure Day. The day will begin down at Sloper Pond with the YMCA Adventure Guides’ annual Fishing Derby. Registration is required to participate in the derby and can be completed at the Southington or Cheshire Community YMCAs or the day of the event at YMCA Camp Sloper.

There are registration fees.

Sign-in begins at 8 a.m. and the two hour contest will run from 9 to 11 a.m. The Adventure Guides will provide bait and hand out awards for biggest fish, first catch, best cast, and other achievements. At noon the YMCA Skate Park will kickstart its Grand Opening.

Jo Rembish, a Southington resident, is the May Artist of the Month at the Gallery at the Southington Library. The artist will be exhibiting a variety of pieces including renderings of still life, landscape and floras’. She finds inspiration for her work in the endless beauty of the land, sea and sky along the Connecticut and Rhode Island coast.

In addition, her flower garden serves as a resource for her still life and floral paintings. When the weather is cooperative, she can be found painting en plein air. She feels outdoor painting can be stimulating and challenging.

Being surrounded by the subject that one is painting often produces wonderful results, which may not happen in the studio.

Rembish utilizes acrylic paint on canvas. Acrylics are perfect because she can work quickly and spontaneously. This allows her to take advantage of unexpected changes in color, line and shape. James Morelli Sr.

James E. Morelli Sr., 79, of Southington, died peacefully at home April 22, 2012, after a coura g eous battle with heart failure.

He was the husband of the late Phyllis M. (Byers) Morelli.

He was born Aug. 5, 1932, he was a lifelong Southington resident and parishioner of St. Thomas Church from where across the street he was born and raised. He was a proud retiree of Pratt and Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford where he was a Supplier Quality Assurance Engineer. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict where he served in the 45th Transportation Army Aircraft Maintenance Company. He was a sports standout throughout his hometown Lewis High career. He was a member of the famous Lewis High 1949 Championship

heritage within their community. He was a member of the Polish Falcons and participated in their golf league and Kielbasa Open Golf Tournament every year. His passion later in life was his golf game. He built a tremendous network of friends around the golf course and arose each day with the glee of knowing he’d be out on the course with his friends.

He absolutely loved to play the game. He played in several leagues both structured and informal. He was a proud “Obies Gang“ and “Champagne Boy” participant and a member of the Southington Country Club – Men’s Club. He was a playing member of the Southington Country Club for as long as we can remember. He leaves behind far too many friends to mention. His passion and determination and his love for life and his family were un-paralleled. Everyone who knew him called him a “special” person and that he was.

He will be sorely missed by us all.

The Morelli family would like to extend our sincerest heartfelt thanks to everyone at Hartford Hospital and especially the amazing professionals in their LVAD program Doctors- Hammond, Wencker, Gluck, Radogevic,

James III (JT), Charlie, Jessica, Morelli, Hailey and Stephen Morelli, and Erika, Emily, and Heather Landino.

He was predeceased by a son and his sidekick of 47 years, Jeffrey Allen Morelli and a beloved brother and sister, Robert Morelli and Mary Ann Grimaldi.

The funeral was held April 30, 2012, at the Della Vecchia Funeral Home, Southington, to St Thomas Church, Southington for Mass. Burial was in St Thomas Cemetery. He was a past Executive Director of SARC (multiple terms) and a board member for numerous years.

Whether it was painting a building, rehabilitating playgrounds, fund raising-paper drives, trips to see Santa, Special Olympics, and more he was always there. He served on local boards, was a member of the Republican Town Committee, ran for Town Council, was a past President of the Southington UNICO, was a 50 plus year member of the American Legion, Elks Club, and the Southington Sons of Italy Club; a club that was founded by his father and several other Italian immigrants who settled in Southington and wanted a way to nurture camaraderie and their Italian

The Women & Girls’ Fund of the Main Street Community Foundation will hold a grant writing workshop on Thursday, May 10, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Tunxis Community College in building 600, room 126-7. All social service providers serving the towns of Bristol, Burlington, Plainville, Plymouth, Southington and Wolcott are invited to attend.

The Women & Girls’ Fund Distribution Committee will review the fund’s grant guidelines and application as well as what elements are necessary to submit a competitive proposal. In addition, dialogue and feedback from the social service providers with respect to the current needs of women and girls in our communities will be integral to the workshop. George Simone

George F. Simone, 82, of Southington died April 23, 2012, surrounded by his loving family.

He was the devoted husband of Camille (Wagenbrenner) Simone for 60 years.

He was born in Southington June 21, 1929, the son of the late George F. and Anna (Galiette) Simone. He was a 1948 graduate of Lewis High School in Southington. He was a member of the Army Air Corps stationed in Korea, and selected by the Army to attend Presidio in San Francisco. He was a member of the Southington Police Department for 27

years retiring as Police Captain in 1984. He was the 2nd Southington Officer to attend the FBI National Academy (93rd Session Charlie Company) in Quantico, Va. He was a member of the Southington P.B.A., Police Association of Connecticut, American Legion Kiltonic Post No. 72 and “Gang Scarpa Shoda”. He also was a parishioner of St. Thomas Church in Southington. In his retirement, he will be fondly remembered as a party planner for family events, a breakfast connoisseur and a frequent visitor to local tag sales. His family was the center of his universe and his generosity and gigantic heart had no bounds. George aka “Sarge” and “Poppy” was the “true patriarch” of the family. His strength and

In addition to his beloved wife, he leaves his loving children, George Simone and his wife, Barbara, of Rockledge, Fla., Gregory Simone and his wife, Cindy, of Southington, Gary Simone and his wife, Christine, of Southington, Gerilyn Simone, of Southington, and Gayle Ambrose and her husband, Michael, of Southington; 10 treasured grandchildren, Ricky, Carissa, Katie, Erica, Danielle, Amber, Kimberly, Jeffrey, Ryan and Brandon; and two adored greatgrandchildren, Shane and Keighly; and two special sisters, Rosalyn Manware, of Cheshire and Jean Kirychuk, of Southington; and sister-in-laws, Dorothy Testa, of Southington and Mary Ann Quinn, of Warwick, R.I.; in addition to many nieces, nephews, cousins, and aunts complete the extended family. He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Simone; stepmother, Lillian (Puffe) Simone; and grandson, Matthew Tyler Simone. The family would like to thank Dr. Mark Ruggiero (Waterbury) and Dr. Ralph Prezioso (Southington) for all their attentive care and concern. Special thanks to

St. Mary’s Hospice (VITAS) staff for all their loving compassion and care in his last days.

The funeral was held April 27, 2012, at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, Southington, to St. Thomas Church, Southington for a Mass. Burial with Military Honors was in St. Thomas Cemetery. Gordon Rowe Gordon Rowe, 43, of Southington, died April 20, 2012, at his home.

He was born March 22, 1969, in Wauwatosa, Wis., he was the son of Janet Todd, of Florida and the late Drake Rowe. He was a graduate of the University of Connecticut and was an accomplished mechanical engineer who held several patents, and was currently working for Parker -Hannifen in North Haven. In addition to his engineering abilities, he was a self-taught carpenter, accomplished wood worker, and multi-

faceted individual who worked tirelessly on building and maintaining his dream house. He had a great sense of humor and loved his family and friends.

Besides his mother, he is survived by his two cherished children, Grant and Ana Rowe, both of New Brunswick, Canada; two brothers, Randy With and wife, Roberta, of Indianapolis, Ind. and Todd Rowe, of California; his loving significant other, Nichole Wislowski, of Southington; and several nieces and nephews as well as many other family members and friends that he cared much for, whom also cared so deeply for him.

A memorial was held April 28, 2012, at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, Southington.

Mary Nolte Akerley, 74, of Southington, died after a long illness peacefully, surrounded by her family at her home April 25, 2012. She was the wife of Roger Akerley.

She was born in Springfield, Ohio and was the daughter of the late Margaret and Joseph Lothschuetz. She was a graduate of Catholic Central High School in Springfield. She received her bachelor of arts from the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati. She had a long and varied career in teaching, along with human resources, industrial nursing and managing in-

Vincent Morino, 88, died April 22, 2012.

He was born in Kansas City, Mo. He was the son of the late Frank and Dominica (Minnie) Levantina Morino. Shortly before World War II, he moved to California where he worked as a courier at Warner Studios. He was inducted into the army from California and was sent to serve in the India Burma Theater. When the war ended, he moved to New York City where he studied dance and drama.

For a number of years, he danced in shows in Radio City Music Hall and in early television shows. He also performed in Broadway shows and toured in the road show of “Pal Joey”. His fondest memories of the entertainment business were of the many now famous entertainers he met while touring the Borcht belt. When he left the entertainment business, he worked for many years at Raytheon Products. In his later years, after moving to Wells, Maine, he became well known for his shop Privé Antiques.

His ability to “spot” good quality made him an immediate success.

He also involved himself with the York County Chil-

dren’s Ballet, where he expanded on his love for ballet by creating original costumes for the ballet. This passion lasted for the rest of his life. Handsome, multitalented and cultured, Vincent was indeed “a pard-like spirit, beautiful and swift.”

He is survived by his partner and best friend, Matthew Guarini, with whom he shared a home for many years; a sister, Betty Pipes, of Glendale, Ariz.; a brother, Eugene Morino, of Ojai, Calif.

A memorial service was held April 29, 2012, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Waterbury. Memorial donations may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 309 S. Main St., Waterbury, CT 06702. The DellaVecchia Funeral Home, Southington was assisting the family with the arrangements.

New Britain Youth Theater presents Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella on May 4, 5 and 6 at Jefferson Elementary School, 140 Horse Plain Road, New Britain. The NBYT production of Cinderella is set to the music and lyrics of Broadway legends Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. The musical features songs such as In My Own Little Corner, Impossible/It’s Possible!, Stepsisters’ Lament, and Ten Minutes Ago. This “Getting to Know” title from the Rodgers and Hammerstein Library is adapted specifically for young performers and audiences. Ballet Theatre Company Presents its 14th Annual Spring Season, Gwendolyn the Graceful Pig, Saturday May 5, at 1 and 5:30 p.m., at Carol Autorino Center for the Arts and Humanities on the Saint Joseph College Campus, 1678 Asylum Ave., West Hartford.

The featured work is the premiere of Gwendolyn the Graceful Pig, a one-act ballet based on the children’s book

by David Ira Rottenberg. In the lead roles of Gwendolyn and her friend Omar are Taylor Gordon and Aaron Atkins. Both Gordon and Atkins dance with New

York’s Exit 12 Dance Company as well as BTC’s Nutcracker. In the role of Natasha, the Russian ballet teacher is Lisa Fitzgerald, of Plantsville, also of Exit 12 Dance. Fitzgerald has performed the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy in the 2010 and 2011 Nutcrackers. Rottenberg will have a discussion and book signing following the performance. BTC’s junior company and 20 additional children from Ballet Theatre Academy will be performing as well.

Rounding out the program is the spectacular grand pas de deux from “Le Corsaire”

danced by Lisa Fitzgerald and Steven Ezra Marshall.

Marshall, a dancer with Momix is making his first appearance with Ballet Theatre Company. He trained at the Nutmeg Conservatory and School of American Ballet.

He has performed principal roles with Momix and will be a major contributor in the creation of a new Momix show due next year. For 9 nine years he has toured ex-

The Eunice Cashman Bass Ambassador Program announces that the titles of Little Miss Southington 2012, Young Miss Southington 2012 and Junior Miss Southington 2012 will be awarded at a program scheduled for Saturday, May 5, at DePaolo Middle School, 385 Pleasant St., at 6:30 p.m. Sixteen local girls ages 7 to 16 will be vying for the titles.

To the editor: Once again the Southington community has spelled success for its students through amazing support of the Southington Education Foundation’s 2nd Annual Adult Spelling Bee. With 81 participants yielding from all segments of the community and corporate sponsorship from Pops Original Burgers and Fries on Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike, nearly $10,000 was raised. That money will be used to better the education experiences of our public school students here in Southington.

Congratulations to TD Bank’s Totally Dominant Bank Spellers’ team, of Rick Veilleux, Rosemary DeFeo, and Kelly Steffans, who took home the trophy and bragging rights for a year.

The SEF also appreciates Bee Master Joe Furey, of FOX 61 News, and all attendees and participants who donated non-perishable food items to Bread for Life.

The more than $75,000 that the SEF has disseminated to our Southington classrooms is made possible through various fundraisers like the spelling bee and our largest community event, Fan of the Foundation, which is scheduled this year for Oct. 5. Please save the

Cinco de Mayo: Let’s eat!

By Heather Hunsaker Special to The Citizen Cinco de Mayo is fast approaching and allows many to celebrate the history of Mexico, honor Mexican culture and of course indulge in Mexican cuisine! Mexico has a rich and flavorful food history, which uses native ingredients mixed with worldwide culinary inspiration to form the popular dishes we all know and love.

Authentic Mexican cooking starts with traditional ingredients that are found in various regions of Mexico. Below is helpful information about these popular ingredients that give Mexican cuisine its unique flavor.

Tomatillos, a member of the gooseberry family, are small, round green fruits enclosed in a papery husk.

They have a tart flavor and are often roasted and pureed into Mexican sauces or salsas, referred to as verde.

Hominy is dried maize kernels that have been soaked in lye to soften the tough outer hulls. Hominy is often ground to make grits or masa flour or added whole to stews and casseroles.

Cilantro is a green herb that comes from the leaves and stems of the coriander

plant. It has a strong flavor that compliments spicy dishes. Cilantro is most common in Mexican cuisine, but can also be found in Asian and Indian cooking.

Chayotes are native to Mexico and are a member of the squash family. They are mild in flavor and look like a wrinkled, pale green pear. Chayotes can be boiled or baked or eaten raw in salads. Zucchini or another summer squash makes for a great substitute.

Chili is a generic word referring to a large variety of capsicum peppers.

There are over 100 varieties of chili, including the most popular varieties such as the spicy jalapeno, fiery habanero and large poblano. As a general rule, the smaller the chili the more concentrated the heat; which is from the capsaicin found in the chili’s veins and seeds. Chili are available fresh, dried, and pickled, and are found in many Mexican dishes.

Posole is a traditional Mexican dish made of pork, hominy, cilantro, and chili peppers. It is most commonly served as a thick stew but is also wonderful served on top of a bed of rice. The posole See Eat, page 26

Wendie Nelson sent in before and after photos of a culvert in front of her house that was cleaned during Earth Day activities. “We work very hard at keeping it clean and looking nice,” Nelson said, adding that the area is located along Meriden Waterbury Turnpike and “It is sad that it has gotten this bad. The water gets all choked up with garbage and other debris. I have often taken walks down the street and wished I could clean it up but most of it is very treacherous. The uncaring motorists throw their trash out and we are constantly cleaning up the end of our driveway and lawn as well. Thank you for taking this Earth Day/week to show the beauty as well as the bad. Every day should be Earth Day.”

Grand re-opening

Honors

Tunxis Community College, located at the junction of Routes 6 and 177 in Farmington, joined by student veterans and other state officials, celebrated the grand re-opening of its expanded Veterans’ OASIS on April 12.

The renovation triples the size of the OASIS, short for Operation Academic Support for Incoming Service members, to 700 square feet. Two new social rooms were added to an existing study and computer area, providing a place for Tunxis student veterans to meet, study and socialize between classes.

An early gift from the Class of 2012, Tunxis Student Government Association funded the renovation. During the celebration, Transfer Enterprises Inc., of Manchester, received recognition for donating furniture for the new rooms, and the General Federated Womens’ Clubs, of Bristol, Farmington Valley and Plainville were commended for raising funds to help support the Veterans’ OASIS. Located in Founders Hall, the Tunxis Veterans’ OASIS is part of a larger initiative started in 2008 by the Connecticut Department of Veterans’ Affairs to form Vet OASIS Centers at all of Connecticut’s public colleges and universities.

The Rams, used to playing on turf at their high school, rolled to a 19-4 nonconference victory over an improved Southington squad Monday afternoon at Bartlem Park.

Alyssa Hague and Kathleen Kalbian each found the back of the net four times to head the Cheshire (8-2) attack.

Quinnipiac-bound senior Maria Blois also added three goals and a career-best five assists for Cheshire, which built an 8-2 edge at halftime.

“The offense was cutting really well,” Blois said. “The

passes were wide open. It was easy to put it right on their stick. They were wide open and calling for the ball.

We played great today and finished pretty well. Overall, it was a good game.”

Rams coach Dan Warburton substituted liberally in the second half with the game well in hand. Nine Cheshire players scored in the win.

Carolynn Keal accounted for half of the Blue Knights’ points with a pair of tallies.

Mel Reid and Sarah Pelligrinelli each chipped in with goals of their own.

“We have had a good season – better than most of us expected because we lost so many good girls from last year,” Pelligrinelli said. “We came out with a lot of heart and could see that we could play with each other very well.”

The Blue Knights are 4-3-1 to start the year. A senior attacker, Pelligrinelli has over 30 goals and is three short of 100 for her career.

After hitting a rough patch a couple of weeks back, it appears the Southington High School baseball team has righted the ship. The Blue Knights climbed back above .500 – 6-5 – with a 4-1 victory over visiting Simsbury Monday.

Southington received an excellent showing that night from pitcher Craig Frobel, pictured. The game-winner went the distance, allowed three hits and one walk, and struck out 10. That tidy performance was necessary, as the home team manufactured just three hits. The big poke of the game came from Ben Nichols, who blasted a two-run homerun in the third inning to give the Blue Knights their game-winning margin. Joe Rivera and Jordan Grey accounted for SHS’s other hits. Ted Shaw and Matt DiNello also scored for the locals.

Most coaches would be just thrilled to own a record of 9-2, but not John Bores; at least not this year.

Expectations are high for Bores’ Southington High School softball team. That’s why a 3-2 eight-inning loss to Central Connecticut Conference West Division foe Simsbury Monday left the veteran coach in a dour mood.

“We lost two this season, two that we shouldn’t have lost,” said Bores, whose team was edged by Rocky Hill April 16 in extra-innings.

That being said, the coach isn’t too upset about Southington’s standing.

“We’re right where I thought we’d be,” Bores said.

“We have three freshmen that play quite a bit. I knew we were going to be young. I knew there we’re going to be some bumps in the road.

Hopefully we’ll regroup and put together another winning streak.”

The usually high-powered Lady Blue Knights’ offense manufactured a modest seven hits against host Simsbury (7-3). Alyssa Dumphy and Nicole Rossitto each came through with a single and a double for the visitors.

A two-out RBI double by Lauren Zazzaro in the Southington seventh knotted the score at two.

That tally held up until the bottom of the eighth when Simsbury’s No. 9 batter knocked a grounder into left field to bring in the winning run.

Speaking of his team’s showing at the plate Monday, Bores said, “We didn’t make the adjustments. We didn’t strike out a lot, we just didn’t hit the ball the way we are capable of hitting.”

At season’s midway point, tennis coach is pleased with young team

Coming into the season, head coach Tony Mauro didn’t have any false notions about what to expect on the tennis court for his boys team.

With a lot of new guys and some older guys in new spots, he expected it would be somewhat of a rebuilding year.

Halfway through the season he says, “We’re exactly where I kind of sensed we would be.”

After a tough CCC West loss Monday to Newington, where the locals had five sets that went to tiebreakers, the Blue Knights were 4-3 overall.

Up top, senior co-captains Matt Downes, Joey Enright and Jon Sadusky have been

solid in new roles in singles, but more importantly, are the glue that keeps the young team together.

“They’re very good with the younger players,” Mauro explained. “All-around, very, very balanced. I’m very pleased with the three of

Behind the top three is a lot of youth. Playing four singles on a consistent basis has been freshman Nate Mullins.

“He’s made a pretty good move on it,” Mauro said.

“He’s very steady.”

Mauro expanded on Mullins, saying it’s rare to see a freshman in the top four and said it’s been about five years since that’s happened in Southington.

In doubles, the head coach has been very happy with what he’s gotten from his group of, predominantly, freshman.

Gary Beaumont is a junior, but teamed up Monday with freshman Grant Ogrin.

“They’ve been doing very, very well,” said Mauro.

“Both of them show a lot of promise.”

Behind them is Zaya Oshana, a freshman, and sophomore Alex Angelillo. Kevin Wormer normally plays in the top doubles group, but was out earlier this week.

Of the group that is learning varsity tennis on the fly, Mauro says, “They’re really doing a good job. I can tell they’re tentative at times

when they should be more assertive, but that will come with time.”

And he’s confident that the future is bright. “They’re showing a lot of promise because I would say next year and the year after they’re going to make a mark,” he said.

Because of the senior leadership and the attitude of the younger kids, Mauro calls his group, “Top shelf – all 22 kids. I think they’re very team-oriented and have a lot of camaraderie.”

The goal for the team remains trying to get the seven wins necessary to qualify for the state tournament. The Blue Knights have just 16 matches on the schedule after

two were removed, but with four W’s coming into the week, they’re on their way to punching a ticket to the postseason.

Mauro called this a possible “make-it or break-it” week. He was hoping for victories against Newington and one other team. That’s because tough opponents loom in Farmington, Hall, Simsbury and Wethersfield.

Swing matches will be today, May 4 at South Windsor, Monday versus Northwest Catholic and E.O. Smith to end the year.

“It’s a battle. They’ve got to be at their best,” Mauro said of his guys.

“We’ve got our work cut out for us.”

Parks and Recreation Touch a truck The American Legion Auxiliary and the Southington Parks & Recreation Department are co-sponsoring the 10th Annual “Touch-a-Truck” event on Saturday, May 19, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (rain date – Sunday, May 20). This event will be held at the Derynoski Elementary School rear parking lot on Eden Avenue in Southington. Children will be able to climb into construction, rescue, military and other vehicles, face painting, music, an obstacle course and more. Refreshments and raffles will also be available. There is an admission price to attend; parents/guardians are free.

Dog obedience classes The Southington Parks & Recreation Department will offer two types of dog obedience classes this spring. Both classes will be held on Thursday evenings, May 10, 17, 24, 31, and June 7, 14 and 21 at The Summit at Plantsville, 261 Summit St. The instructor is Kevin Medeiros. “Puppy Kindergarten” classes for dogs 3-5 months old will run from 7 to 8 p.m. “Basic Dog Obedience” classes for dogs older than 5 months will run from 8 to 9 p.m. All dogs must have up-todate vaccinations in order to participate.
