Southington educators frustrated by finance board cuts By Farrah Duffany Special to The Citizen

The Board of Education and school administrators expressed frustration and disappointment April 1 about the Board of Finance’s recommendation to cut their proposed budget by $1.1 million. The Town Council will

make the final decision on the amount given to schools in the 2013-14 budget. If the council doesn’t add money to the finance board’s recommendation, programs or staffing will have to be cut, school officials said. School Superintendent Joseph V. Longtime former town manager John Weichsel dies By Richie Rathsack and Eric Vo Special to The Citizen

Friends, family and numerous acquaintances are mourning a man who was an

institution in town for more than 40 years. Former Town Manager John Weichsel died Friday night. He was 80. Hired in 1966 when the town switched to a managercouncil form of government,

Weichsel held the job for almost 45 years until retiring in January 2011. Many believe he was the longest-serving town manager in the country. He also served for a time as the president of the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities. When he retired, Weichsel joked that the retirement age of 65 was obsolete. A pygmy goat has been in temporary residence at the Southington Dog Pound since March 29 after being picked up by Animal Control Officer David Ireland. If no one claims the goat, Ireland has plans to find it a good home on a local farm.
