Wrapped in ritual

Juandi Andrag’s Mantua Silkwear is where wellness meets wardrobe.

Wrapped

In a fashion world teetering on the edge of maximalism and microtrends, Juandi Andrag (left) is quietly leading a silk-clad revolution – one that begins not on the runway, but on the skin. As the founder and designer of Mantua Silkwear, Juandi has built more than a brand; she’s created a manifesto for mindful luxury, stitched together with science, spirit and South African artistry.

Born from her personal journey with autoimmune illness and a hypersensitive skin barrier, Mantua is not a detour, it is a deeply intentional destination. “When your own skin becomes a battleground, you begin listening very di erently to the things you place against it,” says Juandi. “For me, healing started with fabric.”

And that fabric is silk ... nature’s own miracle fibre. Hypoallergenic, breathable, temperature-regulating and exquisitely soft, silk becomes the canvas for Mantua’s handpainted prints and flowing silhouettes. These are not merely pretty pieces – they’re what Juandi calls “ritual wear”.

“Each garment invites presence,” she explains. “Whether you are slipping into a kaftan to meditate, wrapping a scarf around your shoulders for a meeting, or simply lounging at home, you’re performing a private act of restoration.”

Indeed, Mantua exists in that rare space where haute design meets holistic function. Each piece – be it a technicolour scarf, ethereal kaftan or the brand’s highly anticipated bespoke sleepwear – feels less like fashion and more like an act of selfdevotion. The colours are luminous, the lines elegant and the e ect quietly transformative.

Juandi is refreshingly uninterested in chasing trends. Instead, she designs for the woman who has evolved beyond fast fashion; the one who chooses resonance over relevance, fabric over flash.

“The Mantua woman understands that luxury is not about excess,” Juandi reflects. “It’s about how something makes you feel in your own skin.”

Her aesthetic, though global in appeal, remains deeply rooted in South African soil. All Mantua designs begin as hand-painted watercolour artworks; a visual love letter to the country’s rich light, flora and soul. These original artworks are then digitally translated onto premium mulberry silk and natural silk blends, resulting in a tactile experience that is both couture and care..

Mantua’s South African identity also extends to its philosophy of sustainability and slow craftsmanship. No synthetic shortcuts. No mass-market mediocrity. Just intention, thread by thread.

So what’s next? “Sleepwear,” says Juandi, her eyes lighting up. “Not just any sleepwear ... garments that make night-time sacred. That carry you gently into restoration.”

Think silk slips and robes that are equal parts boudoir and wellness retreat.

For Juandi Andrag, Mantua is not about selling clothing. It’s about inviting women back into their bodies, through fabric that heals, elevates and honours.

In a world that moves too fast and feels too loud, that might be the most luxurious act of all.

NEW RESTAURANTS TO TRY RIGHT NOW 10

South Africa’s dining scene is thriving, with exciting newcomers offering everything from golden-hour fiestas to farm-to-fork feasts. Here’s our pick of the 10 hottest new restaurants to visit. BY MORGAN STEWART

OCASO

JOHANNESBURG

As Corona’s first dedicated South African flagship, Ocaso is more than a restaurant. It is a goldenhour ritual. Located in Oxford Parks, this Mexican-inspired hotspot flows e ortlessly from sun-drenched afternoons into late-night DJ sets under twinkling lanterns. The menu is rich with flavour, o ering tableside guacamole, birria tacos, corn ribs, wagyu burgers, churros and Bananas Foster, while the interior features wicker bars, ocean-blue floors and macramé cushions crafted with artisanal flair. It’s the perfect place to transition from sundowners into midnight magic.

ROOI

CAPE TOWN

Inside the One&Only Cape Town, ROOI is an ode to fire and flame. The sultry dining room glows with bronze fire tiles, carved woods and sculpted murals, while the menu is all about bold grilling and luxurious pairing. Expect dishes such as prime rib, Kalahari venison, wagyu beef, kingklip and rock lobster, accompanied by rare red wines and boutique cocktails. It’s an immersive sensory feast where food, drink and atmosphere burn bright.

THE WES BISTRO & BAR

CAPE TOWN

Stepping into The Wes on Shortmarket Street feels like stepping onto a Wes Anderson film set. Dusky pink ceilings, dreamy blue walls, a fountain centerpiece and a dramatic Grand Budapest Hotel mural create a whimsical, cinematic backdrop. The food, however, is rooted in the French bistro tradition, with classics reimagined through a Cape lens. Bouillabaisse is enlivened with Cape Malay spices, vegetables are charred for ratatouille and roast chicken arrives with straw potatoes and rocket salad. A rack of lamb with dauphinoise potatoes is hearty yet refined, while desserts, like a delicate Paris-Brest filled with elderflower crème pâtissière, add a touch of lightness. Simple, soulful food meets playful sophistication in a space that feels magical.

LIBERTINO

CAPE TOWN

De Waterkant’s newest arrival is a cheeky, disco-infused trattoria that makes meat-free Italian food feel like a party on a plate. Libertino is a riot of leopard curtains, neon staircases and velvet textures and the menu is as playful as the décor. From pumpkin pizza with Gorgonzola to charred artichokes, lemony prawns, grilled nectarines with burrata and tiramisu, each dish is bold, irreverent and utterly delicious. This is Italian indulgence with a vibrant, meat-free twist.

CURATE

CAPE TOWN

Hidden inside Bantry Bay’s Ellerman House’s sculptural wine gallery, Curate o ers an intimate tasting menu that blends South African heritage with fine-dining artistry. Each course is carefully conceived, with standouts including salmon trout koeksister, amagwinya topped with caviar, mushroom melktert, springbok with samp and Nguni beef with marrow. Paired with rare wines and set against the backdrop of an extraordinary wine-art installation, this is dining as theatre, where art and flavour intertwine.

OUR LOCAL

SEA POINT ž CAPE TOWN

The beloved Kloof Street café has found a little sister by the sea. Our Local Sea Point is nestled inside what was once the paint corner of an old hardware store, now transformed into a soulful, vintage-inspired haven. Mismatched tables, plants and market finds set the scene for a menu that balances nostalgic favourites with new discoveries. There are shakshukas, creamy chicken livers and toasties, alongside zucchini and spinach omelettes, gluten-free bircher bowls and the now-iconic Posh Schnitz. Later in the day, the Chicken Limone and burgers like the OL Smashie or Spicy Korean Fried Chicken steal the show, while evenings bring homely dishes such as meatballs in napolitana, Cavolo Nero pasta and apple tarte Tatin. From iced teas and palomas to disco nights under a mirror ball, it’s a neighbourhood space with soul, flavour and fun.

VELD AT SPIER

STELLENBOSCH

At Spier, sustainability has always been more than a philosophy — it’s a way of life. Veld, the farm’s new dinner-only restaurant, takes this ethos from vineyard to plate, with executive chef Craig Paterson creating food that celebrates regenerative farming and ingredients grown on-site in a dedicated food garden. Starters include roasted beetroot with feta, spekboom and hazelnuts, or smoked snoek fishcakes with fennel and bokkom tartare, while mains range from springbok loin with citrus jus to masala-roasted cauliflower steaks and a daily cut of beef served with triple-fried chips. Desserts stay close to home, with rooibos ice cream and Amarula crème brûlée. The dining room, with its hanging ferns, indigenous orchids, contemporary art and roaring fireplace, is as inviting as the menu.

THE SALT ROAD

JOHANNESBURG

Reborn in Houghton, The Salt Road is a culinary playground where salt itself is the star. Chefs Craig Cormack and Beau du Toit use curing, fermenting and salt-slab baking to create dishes that explore flavour in surprising ways. From salt-fermented vegetables to meats cooked on Himalayan slabs, each plate becomes an exploration of ingredient and technique. Set within a serene urban retreat complete with lush gardens, it is a dining experience that balances intimacy with innovation, turning salt into a storyteller.

CYRA

JOHANNESBURG

Located at The Houghton Hotel, Cyra takes its name from a star and promises a dining experience just as dazzling. Led by award-winning chef Candice Philip, the restaurant o ers sweeping sunset views and an exquisite eight-course tasting menu that has already earned Cyra recognition as Fine Dining Restaurant of the Year. Plates such as beef fillet with tru e jus and potato pavé exemplify the precision and artistry of the kitchen, while desserts and cheeses finish the experience with flourish. Romantic, refined and glamorous, Cyra shines brightly in Joburg’s fine-dining constellation.

ONGETEM

CAPE TOWN

Bertus Basson’s newest venture inside the Hilton Canopy in Gardens lives up to its name: Ongetem means untamed and this urban eatery is all about bold, fire-driven flavour. The menu is hearty and relaxed, ranging from flame-grilled steaks and baby chicken to pork neck, sou é and house-made soft-serve. The atmosphere is lively, with hip-hop beats and cowhide accents colliding with contemporary comfort. Unpretentious yet confident, this is a place made for regular visits ... the kind of restaurant where you return again and again for the food, the vibe and the sheer fun of it all.

BURNT BLUSH

A cottage for family and friends in South Africa’s Great Karoo finds new life as a pink-hued retreat embracing its raw past with layers of warmth and texture.

PHOTOGRAPHS GREG COX TEXT LORI COHEN PRODUCTION SVEN ALBERDING

When interior designer Cornel Strydom and her husband Neill purchased Zevenfontein, a neighbouring sheep farm, they never expected to find a forgotten cottage hidden in the landscape. The structure had been abandoned, its walls blackened by fire. Yet, Neil saw something in its quiet resilience and sent Cornel a video. “He said, ‘Look

at this gem,’ and I knew immediately it was something special,” she recalls. The burnt walls, the simplicity of the structure, the way it sat in the landscape ... it all spoke to her.

Rather than viewing the fire-scarred walls as damage to be covered up, Cornel saw them as a defining feature; an imprint of the past that gave the space depth and authenticity. “I wanted to respect what was there and embrace its imperfections,” she explains. “The walls held so much history and I wanted to create a space where you could still feel that, but in a way that feels inviting and considered.”

At just four rooms – a lounge, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom – the cottage’s small footprint required a thoughtful approach to layout and function. The bathroom was expanded to accommodate a generous walk-in shower and a water chamber. Cornel worked with the compact space of the cottage to create a sense of flow, ensuring each room felt connected yet distinct.

The muted Marrakesh-inspired pink, which washes over the floors, walls and ceilings, is the element that binds the entire space together. Inspired by a fragment of plaster Cornel had saved for years, it was carefully colourmatched to bring a sense of warmth and calm. “I picked it up in Marrakesh when they were busy working on a wall,” she shares. “I put it in my notebook and had it matched when I returned home.”

Covering every surface, the shade enhances the natural light, softens architectural lines and provides a quiet contrast to the charred walls, reinforcing the cottage’s layered, lived-in feel. Visitors often comment on its unexpected calm. “People always assume pink will feel overly feminine, but this shade is di erent. It is earthy, grounding and incredibly soothing,” Cornel notes.

This thoughtful approach to colour reflects Cornel’s broader design philosophy. She approached each decision with a personal checklist: something old, something organic, something modern, something textured and something smooth. She sourced materials with intention, often repurposing or selecting elements that carried a story.

Today, the property o ers a serene retreat for experiencing the Karoo’s charm; from walks along dusty paths to glimpses of the black eagle families that have nested here for over four decades. “It’s a sanctuary,” Cornel reflects. The couple marked their 20th wedding anniversary here, a quiet moment in a space that is now part of their history. “It was just the two of us, surrounded by the stillness of the Karoo,” she shares. “It was the perfect place to reflect on everything we’ve built together.”

Zimbo’s offers engineered and solid oak flooring and decking, in exclusive partnership with German manufacturing leaders Loba and Wakol — bringing beauty, precision, and lasting quality to every space.

The fire-scorched plaster walls anchor the space with their rich texture, while black timber cabinetry with vertical panelling nods to classic farm kitchens. Designer Cornel’s love of gingham comes through in the handmade pink-and-white checkered curtains, softening the room with nostalgia. Opposite page: A geometric tile backsplash and simple, well-worn essentials make the space feel personal and unpolished. The single modern touch? A sleek, minimalist ceiling light above the kitchen sink subtly contrasts with the cottage’s timeworn charm.

These framed botanical pieces are a deeply personal touch, showcasing dried flowers Cornel picked along the road leading to the cottage. “I couldn’t think of anything more perfect than using flowers from just outside the house,” she says. Opposite page: The lounge balances raw and refined elements, with fire-scorched walls contrasting against soft textures like the boucle armchair and gingham curtains. The pink woven chair ties into the home’s palette, while mixed-material side tables and a bold plaid rug add depth. Thoughtful contrasts keep the space visually dynamic yet inviting.

Interior designer Cornel Strydom's design philosophy balances raw authenticity with warmth, embracing imperfection and simplicity to create timeless and inviting spaces. “I love stories,” says Cornel. “For me, design isn’t just about aesthetics ... it’s about emotion, memory and embracing what’s already there.”

DESIGN

The headboard and side tables are seamlessly built into the structure using concrete, creating a streamlined, space-saving solution in the bedroom. This approach eliminates the need for bulky furniture, making the compact bedroom feel more open while reinforcing the cottage’s organic, understated aesthetic. To tie the spaces together, Cornel repurposed soot-stained concrete mouldings from the old fireplace as wall art above the bed. “I loved how the blackened pieces carried the story of the fire through to the bedroom. It’s a subtle but intentional connection between the rooms,” she explains. The crocheted bedspread and patterned pillows add softness and texture, sourced for their handmade, tactile quality.

The pink concrete creates a connection to the walls, making the space feel calm and intentional. Paired with a raw wood counter and exposed copper pipes, it reflects her design approach: uncomplicated, functional and true to the building's character. The shower’s washed stone walls highlight the natural texture of the materials, keeping the space raw yet refined. This bathroom is a bold, all-in commitment to colour, with Cornel Strydom’s signature pink wrapping the walls, floors and built-in ledge for a statementmaking, sculptural effect. The monochrome approach strips away distractions, letting texture and form take centre stage.

In the Karoo’s semi-desert climate, where winters are cold, the outdoor fireplace makes this space as practical as it is inviting. Built-in stone seating with cushions and a gingham-covered table create a simple gathering spot, while woven chairs add texture. "The sunsets here are just incredible – you have to sit outside and take them in," says Cornel.

THE FOUNDATION OF EXCELLENCE

Zimbo’s Flooring & Decking Solutions

When it comes to transforming a space, few elements have the power to define its character quite like the floor beneath one’s feet or the deck that extends a living area into the outdoors. Zimbo’s Flooring & Decking Solutions recognises that these surfaces deserve more than a purely functional approach – they demand craftsmanship, quality and a seamless connection between every stage of the process.

With showrooms and service teams in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban, Zimbo’s delivers an end-to-end solution that combines worldclass materials with expert installation. As the o cial home of Loba and Wakol in South Africa, the company’s o ering extends beyond a collection of products; it is a fully integrated system. From the ground up, Zimbo’s provides everything needed to achieve exceptional results: premium adhesives, robust moisture barriers, engineered flooring and beautifully enduring finishes.

Zimbo’s European engineered oak and solid hardwood floors set the standard for luxury and durability. Sourced with equal attention to aesthetics and performance, these boards are designed to thrive in South Africa’s climate while maintaining the refined character admired by architects and designers. For exterior spaces, Zimbo’s decking range upholds the same standards ... rich, resilient materials that elevate outdoor living.

Beneath the surface, Wakol products ensure every installation is built on a foundation of reliability. The Wakol PU 280 moisture barrier safeguards investments against subfloor challenges, while the Wakol MS 228 adhesive delivers an uncompromising bond that endures over time. Trusted by professionals worldwide, these German-engineered solutions are valued for their innovation, environmental responsibility and ease of application.

Once installed, Loba products provide the finishing touch. Loba’s water-based varnishes and decking oils o er a spectrum of protective, breathable coatings, which enhance the natural beauty of wood without compromising durability. Suitable for both high-tra c homes and boutique commercial spaces, these finishes strike the balance between sustainability and performance, backed by decades of German manufacturing expertise. To support long-term care, Zimbo’s also o ers a curated collection of premium maintenance products –

including its own in-house range – ensuring surfaces remain pristine for years to come.

Every Zimbo’s project is guided by values of precision, integrity and beauty in every detail. Whether working directly with homeowners or collaborating with architects and designers, the team approaches each installation as a bespoke opportunity to bring a client’s vision to life. Their role extends well beyond product supply, encompassing professional guidance, skilled application and ongoing support.

In a market where shortcuts are common, Zimbo’s Flooring & Decking Solutions distinguishes itself by delivering a complete, proven system; from subfloor preparation to the final protective coat. Through exclusive partnerships with Loba and Wakol Germany, Zimbo’s brings international innovation and engineering excellence to South African homes and commercial spaces.

When every layer works together seamlessly, the result is more than just a floor or deck. It is a lasting foundation for the life built upon it.

WILD AT HEART

Inside the reserve’s nature-inspired

makeover

For nearly three decades, The Reserve at Sun City has been a place where families return year after year, drawn by its timeless blend of self-catered freedom, warm hospitality and a setting steeped in African beauty. Now, this much-loved Sun Vacation Club gem is undergoing a R210 million transformation that promises to keep it at the top of South Africa’s holiday wish list.

By December 2025, 95% of the refurbishment will be complete, breathing fresh life into a destination that has been part of Sun City’s story since 1996. Here, 234 stylish units and two exclusive villas are tucked among acacia and leopard trees,, creating a natural sanctuary that feels a world away, yet is just moments from the resort’s world of entertainment, dining and adventure.

INSPIRED BY NATURE, DESIGNED FOR ESCAPE

The new interiors, envisioned by Blacksmith Interior Inspiration, channel the essence of the African wild. Stone-look tiles underfoot, woven savanna wallpapers on the walls and bespoke fabrics in bold, sun-baked tones make each space feel alive with the colours and textures of the bush. Larger-than-life wildlife portraits turn headboards into gallery-worthy centrepieces, while soft blue ceilings and ambient lighting evoke the hush of twilight on safari.

It is a style both grounded and glamorous: rich timber furniture warmed by natural light, airy white shutters opening to treetop views and subtle lighting that invites slow mornings and unhurried evenings.

“We want guests to feel instantly transported into the heart of the African wild,” says designer Ryan Ilgner. “Every detail – from the textures under your fingertips to the art above your bed – tells that story.”

A HOLIDAY THAT FEELS LIKE HOME – ONLY BETTER

The Reserve has always been about connection – to nature, to family, to the joy of shared time. Here, mornings might start with co ee on a shaded terrace, days are filled with golf, padel, watersports or shopping and nights end with stories under an African sky. “This is more than an upgrade,” says Sun Vacation Club’s Group General Manager, Janita Donaldson. “It’s a reinvigoration of our promise to create holidays where people connect ... with each other and with the beauty of this place.” With its reimagined design and enduring spirit, The Reserve remains what it has always been: an oasis where luxury is measured not just in finishes and features, but in the moments you take home with you.

KRUGER UNTAMED

There’s hardly anything tame about the Kruger National Park and thanks to hospitality group Motsamayi (the team that brought us the Kruger Shalati train), there’s a new way to experience the untamed beauty of the wilderness.

Kruger Untamed o ers two seasonal camps, emerging in two distinct Kruger locations each year. They operate for only five months annually, after which everything is packed away and stored until the following season to allow the land to rest fully. These are the only camps in Kruger that operate on this basis. The seasonality is mainly dictated by weather – summer becomes too hot and there’s an increased risk of flash floods. The cooler winter months provide a more comfortable experience deep in the bush.

Motsamayi’s partners in realising the camps’ possibility are bush legends Alex van den Heever and Renias Mhlongo - you may have read the book Changing a Leopard’s Spots, which recounts their friendship forged in the wilderness. Alex describes the vision for Kruger Untamed: “Our vision has always been to create a place where we could take people tracking animals and immerse guests in true wilderness experiences.”

While most lodges o er this experience, at Kruger Untamed, much of the boundary between tame and wild is removed. During a recent visit to Kruger, I had the privilege of touring both camps.

TSHOKWANE RIVER CAMP

In the parking lot of Kruger’s Tshokwane rest camp, guide Simon greets us. After directing us to the secure car park, we leave our rental vehicle and board the game viewer. Within minutes, we leave the tar road behind and enter the private 17000-hectare concession. It’s always a privilege to leave the mass of Kruger and know that a significant stretch of pristine wilderness is exclusively yours.

Tshokwane was the first of the two camps to be established, with 2025 seeing its third resurrection. It’s the only camp between Satara and Skukuza, situated right in the heart of the park.

The signboard welcomes us, followed by a lively greeting from the sta . What becomes apparent quickly is that the spirit of camp life is defined by enthusiastic service. Upholding Motsamayi’s commitment to community development, many sta are new to hospitality. Where their experience was still growing, there was no shortage of genuine, heartfelt engagement.

The camp is perched on a high bank of the Ripape River, with the dining area descending to the boma and further down to a dry riverbed, where a stretch tent o ers communal space, along with salas, loungers and a pool to beat the heat.

The tents extend from the sides of the camp, each with views into the dry riverbed. The veranda o ers excellent wildlife spotting, with chairs angled towards the bush. Within the first hour, I’ve seen elephant, gira e, bushbuck and kudu from the tent.

Inside, you are welcomed by a comfortable bed and dedicated luggage and dressing areas. The bathroom features an electric flushing toilet and mounted bucket showers. Hot water is heated in a donkey boiler and when you are ready to shower, a team member prepares everything for you. It’s stripped-back luxury, with all essentials included: power for charging devices and a radio to contact the lodge at any time.

Then, of course, the game viewing on drives is plentiful. We had barely driven far and already a host of species were ticked o our Kruger checklist. Perhaps Untamed’s hero o ering is the daily bush walks. Guided by trained rangers, the opportunity to traverse the land on foot is a rare privilege, allowing a surreal closeness to the environment.

SATARA PLAINS CAMP

Heading north, the second camp is situated a 30-minute drive from Satara Rest Camp. Once parked, guides were ready to load our gear and it was o to camp. Again, it was a warm welcome and, within minutes, the sta were already using our names – an appreciated personal touch.

Here, tents are nestled into the grassland, where waterbuck, zebra and other grazers pass near the fences –with lion, leopard and cheetah often close by. A perennial river nearby attracts game in search of water during winter.

The camp features a similarly large restaurant and beneath a magnificent Natal Mahogany tree is a relaxing deck. Adjacent to the deck are two hot tubs at di erent temperatures, perfect for cooling o , or some welcomed warmth on a cool night. The space is so tranquil, I forewent two game drives to simply soak in the peace. The only sounds are occasional laughs from the sta quarters (a good sign indicating content sta ) and the distant call of a playful elephant.

Kelly arrived, ready to take my evening meal order.

Dining at Kruger Untamed is always a pleasure. For lunch, there are always two options and dinner o ers double choices for starters or mains. After enjoying these creative, tasty meals, I remind myself all of this is prepared in a bush kitchen, completely o -grid.

In an age where ‘sustainable’ and ‘eco’ are frequently added as labels to tourism, Kruger Untamed sets a new benchmark, recently earning a 100% compliance rating in its environmental audit. The first concession in Kruger National Park to achieve this.

Both Untamed camps have 30 tents, accommodating up to 60 guests if booked exclusively. Outside of event bookings, a maximum of 15 tents are used, ensuring a peaceful bush experience. We arrived just as some guests from a 40th birthday celebration were leaving and I could not help but wonder how perfect this place would be for any special gathering or family reunion.

It is a little sad to think all of this would soon be packed away, leaving no trace that scores of guests had enjoyed this slice of wilderness. The consolation, of course, is that next year, the magic will return, ready to create hundreds more Untamed memories.

HYDRATION MYTHS BUSTED

The truth behind truly quenched skin

Think your skin is hydrated just because you drink enough water? Or that oily complexions don’t need moisturiser? Time to rethink. Hydration is the cornerstone of youthful, resilient skin but it is often misunderstood. With its new Hydra Hyaluronic Acid⁴ range, Sothys is setting the record straight and proving smart science, not guesswork, is the secret to lasting radiance.

Well-hydrated skin is resilient, radiant and visibly younger. However, the secret isn’t just water ... it’s science. With four forms of hyaluronic acid, organic rowan berry peptides and boletus extract, Sothys has created a new-generation hydration strategy that keeps skin supple, plump and glowing day after day because beauty begins with balance and true hydration is smarter than ever.

MYTH 1

If I drink more water, my skin will be hydrated

Busted. Staying hydrated is vital for overall health but your skin’s water balance depends on its barrier function. If the skin’s protective layer is weak, water simply evaporates, no matter how many litres you sip.

THE SOLUTION: Sothys Intensive Hydrating

Serum uses four types of hyaluronic acid – from high molecular weight to micro-sized molecules – to replenish hydration on every level of the skin. Combined with patented boletus extract, it locks water in where it is needed most.

MYTH 2

Oily skin does not need moisturiser

Busted. Oily skin still gets dehydrated. In fact, harsh treatments for breakouts often strip moisture, leaving skin tight, shiny and unbalanced. Without hydration, oil glands go into overdrive.

THE SOLUTION: Sothys Hydrating Youth Cream

– Satin Texture gives oily or combination skin the hydration it craves without heaviness, reactivating moisture memory while protecting against external stress.

MYTH 3

Only dry skin gets dehydrated

Busted. Dehydration is a temporary condition and any skin type can su er when exposed to stress, pollution, travel or climate changes. The signs? Tightness, dullness and fine dehydration lines.

THE SOLUTION: The Hydra-Plumping Mask delivers an instant burst of water-rich comfort. In just 15 minutes, skin looks plumper, smoother and more radiant. It is the perfect SOS treatment after a longhaul flight or late night.

MYTH

4

A good cream is enough

Busted. Hydration is a layered strategy. A cream seals in moisture, but serums, masks and professional spa treatments target different mechanisms, from barrier repair to cellular hydration.

THE SOLUTION: The complete Hydra Hyaluronic Acid4 programme – from spa-exclusive intensive treatments to at-home serums, creams and masks –works synergistically to boost water levels, strengthen the barrier and restore youthful bounce.

IMPERIALE FOUR SEASONS A poetic celebration of time

Chopard has unveiled a new chapter in its iconic IMPERIALE collection with the IMPERIALE Four Seasons, a timepiece that has captured the eternal rhythm of nature through artistry and mechanical brilliance.

Since 1994, the IMPERIALE line has embodied regal elegance and horological mastery. With this creation, Chopard has introduced a poetic complication: a rotating disc that completes a full revolution over 365 days, echoing the gentle cycle of the seasons. Crafted in painted mother-of-pearl marquetry, the disc transforms the dial into a living tableau, shifting with time in perfect harmony with the hour hand.

The dial itself is a study in craftsmanship. Its upper half reveals ethical 18-carat white gold lace sculpted into a lotus motif – a signature of the collection, mirrored in the crown’s design. Satin-finished petals with polished veins shimmer against the backdrop of painted mother-of-pearl, evoking nature’s changing

hues. The case, bezel and crown in 18-carat white gold are adorned with diamonds, adding luminous brilliance to this poetic complication. Inside beats the L.U.C 96.31-L calibre, a self-winding movement with a Four Seasons module, o ering a 65-hour power reserve thanks to Chopard Twin Technology. Entirely developed and assembled in-house, it exemplifies the maison’s unrivalled savoir-faire. Completing the creation, four interchangeable alligator straps reflect the colours of spring, summer, autumn and winter, allowing the wearer to attune their watch to the seasons.

Issued in just 25 pieces, the IMPERIALE Four Seasons is not merely a timepiece ... it is a lyrical ode to time, nature and enduring artistry.

EASY EGG AND BEAN FILO TWISTS

Filo is such a versatile pastry. No matter how you put this together, the results are always fun.

Serves: 4

Total time: 22 minutes

INGREDIENTS

• Olive oil

• 8 sheets of filo pastry

• 2 x 400g tins of haricot beans

• 1 heaped tablespoon harissa paste

• 2 heaped tablespoons tomato purée

• Red wine vinegar

• 4 large free-range eggs

• 40g cheddar cheese

• 2 teaspoons sesame seeds

• 2 mixed-colour peppers (320g)

• 2 spring onions

• 1 bunch of dill (20g)

• Extra virgin olive oil

METHOD

• Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/gas

6. Spritz two sheets of filo with olive oil, line up the two short sides so they slightly

overlap, then scrunch up lengthways and twist into a nest about 15cm wide, making sure it has a base. Place on an oil-spritzed baking tray and repeat.

• Drain the beans, toss with the harissa, tomato purée and half a tablespoon of red wine vinegar, then divide evenly between the filo nests. Crack an egg onto each one, season with sea salt and black pepper, grate over the cheese, divide and sprinkle over the sesame seeds. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden and crisp.

• Meanwhile, deseed and very finely chop the peppers. Trim and finely chop the spring onions. Finely chop the dill, mix together, and dress with two tablespoons of red wine vinegar, 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil and a good pinch of salt.

• Serve the egg filo twists with the pepper salsa on the side.

HAPPY FISH PIE

Creamy, comforting and ever so delicious. The big question is, are you having eggs, or no eggs?

Serves: 6

Total time: 1 hour 5 minutes, plus resting

INGREDIENTS

• 1kg potatoes

• 1 large head of broccoli (480g)

• Optional: 3 large free-range eggs

• 3 leeks (480g)

• Olive oil

• 2 heaped tablespoons plain flour

• 2 teaspoons of your favourite mustard

• 600ml semi-skimmed milk

• 800g mixed frozen fish chunks, from sustainable sources

• 75g cheddar cheese

• 1 bunch of chives (20g)

• 1 lemon

METHOD

• Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/gas 4. Peel the potatoes, halving any larger ones, and cook in a pan of boiling salted water for 20 minutes or until tender. Trim, finely chop and reserve the broccoli stalk. Chop the head into florets and add to the pan with the eggs, if using, for the last 7 minutes. Cool the eggs under cold running water. Drain the potatoes and broccoli and steam dry.

• Meanwhile, trim the leeks, halve lengthways, wash and finely slice. Place in a large shallow casserole pan on a medium heat with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and the chopped broccoli stalk. Cook for 10 minutes or until soft, stirring regularly. Stir in the flour and mustard, then gradually stir in the milk. Simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, and season to perfection.

• Add the fish chunks and simmer for another 5 minutes, then grate in most of the cheese. Finely chop the chives and fold in most of them. Peel, halve and dot in the eggs, if using and finely grate over the lemon zest.

• Mash the potato and broccoli – rustic or smooth, the choice is yours. Season to perfection, spoon over the dish, fork up the top for added texture, grate over the last bit of cheese and spritz with oil. Bake for 35 minutes or until golden and bubbling. Rest for 5 minutes, sprinkle over the remaining chives and serve with lemon wedges.

ASPIRE WINE

The rise of South African Rosé BLUSH PERFECTION

In the shimmering glow of a late afternoon sun, few sights are as effortlessly glamorous as a chilled glass of Rosé catching the light. In South Africa, this once seasonal indulgence has evolved into a year-round celebration of elegance, flavour and artistry. The country’s winemakers are proving South African Rosé can stand proudly alongside the world’s most iconic pink pours, while offering a unique character that is distinctly its own.

Rosé is not, as many assume, simply red and white wine blended together. It’s crafted with intention.

Rosé’s beauty lies in its dual nature – it captures the red fruit vibrancy of a light red wine, yet o ers the crisp refreshment of a white. In South Africa, producers are harnessing a diverse range of terroirs – from the breezy vineyards of Stellenbosch and Constantia to the rugged, sun-drenched slopes of the Swartland – to create Rosés that are as nuanced as they are beautiful in the glass.

Crafted with intention, South African Rosé is made primarily from varieties such as Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Pinot Noir. The delicate blush hue comes from a brief period of skin contact –sometimes just hours – before the juice is gently pressed and fermented. This careful timing allows winemakers to capture alluring aromas of strawberries, cherries and rose petals, while preserving the fresh acidity that makes the wine so food-friendly. The styles are as diverse as the landscapes they come from. Coastal regions tend to produce lighter, more mineral-driven Rosés with citrus and floral notes ... perfect for a sophisticated aperitif or a seafood lunch on a summer terrace. Inland and warmer regions often yield richer, fruit-forward

expressions, with flavours of ripe berries and subtle spice that pair beautifully with charcuterie, grilled meats, or hearty salads.

Premium producers also experiment with techniques such as barrel fermentation or extended lees ageing, adding depth, texture and complexity to their wines, demonstrating that Rosé can be just as serious, collectible and cellar-worthy as a fine Chardonnay or Pinot Noir.

Sparkling Rosé, too, is enjoying a moment in the sun. Méthode Cap Classique producers are crafting world-class examples that rival Champagne in finesse, o ering a fine mousse, delicate notes of redcurrant and brioche and a celebratory sparkle that elevates any occasion; from a Clifton beach picnic to a rooftop soirée in Cape Town.

Beyond the glass, South African Rosé embodies a lifestyle – one of sunlit lunches under ancient oaks, of golden-hour toasts overlooking vineyards, of moments savoured in style. It reflects the nation’s ability to blend world-class craftsmanship with a warm, unpretentious charm.

In the end, a great South African Rosé is more than a wine. It is an invitation. An invitation to slow down, to gather with friends and to see life through a perfectly pink lens. As the cork pops and the blush liquid pours, it is a reminder that in South Africa, the art of Rosé is in full bloom.

FROM LEGACY TO LEGACY

Some stories are too good for fiction. Jessica Saurwein’s begins in 17th century Austria, where her ancestors crafted ‘sour wine’ for the Emperor. Centuries later, that legacy has found a new home under South Africa’s wide skies, in the cool-climate vineyards of Elandskloof, Hemel-en-Aarde, Elgin and Stanford.

In 2024, a milestone was reached: Saurwein Wines’ tenth vintage and the very first crafted in Jessica’s own cellar in Stanford. It is a chapter she calls her “most expressive era” yet, marked by the release of Nom Pinot Noir 2024, Om Pinot Noir 2024 and the 2025 vintage of the muchlauded Chi Riesling.

THE SOUL OF MINIMAL INTERVENTION

Jessica’s winemaking is rooted in restraint. Minimal intervention lets each terroir speak for itself; a philosophy increasingly sought after by wine lovers who value authenticity over polish. The results are wines that are as much about where they are from as how they taste.

The Chi Riesling, praised by Jancis Robinson MW as “possibly South Africa’s best Riesling” for its 2019 vintage, returns in 2025 with grapes from Elgin and Upper Hemel-en-Aarde. Long, cool ripening brought golden fruit, floral aromatics and an o -dry, elegant style ... a Riesling with freshness, depth and unmistakable personality.

The 2024 Pinots are equally expressive. Nom, from Elandskloof’s red Bokkeveld shale and clay soils, is all intensity and fine structure, while Om – already awarded 95 points by Christian Eedes of Winemag – hails from a Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge site 300m above sea level, a terroir that gifts it red fruit purity, wild herb lift and a velvety mouthfeel designed to evolve beautifully in bottle.

WINE AS FAMILY, FARM AND ART

Saurwein Wines is not just a business; it’s a way of life. Jessica’s husband, fine-wine veteran Roland Peens; her mother, Charmaine; two young sons; two loyal sta and a lively menagerie all share in the pursuit of regenerative agriculture and living lightly o the land.

The labels, created in collaboration with artist Isabella Kuijers, tell their own stories. South African flora and fauna burst from each design, hinting at the flavours within: blossom and apple for Chi, opulent berry tones for Nom and wild fynbos for Om. It’s wine as visual poetry.

From a debut Pinot Noir in 2015 that outscored some of Burgundy’s finest, to front-page features in Decanter and multiple 95+ ratings from critics like Tim Atkin, Greg Sherwood MW and Jamie Goode, Saurwein Wines has carved its name into the top tier of South African winemaking. Today, the wines are enjoyed in 16 export markets, with local distribution by Ex Animo.

In Stanford, Jessica is planting her own Pinot Noir vineyard using organic methods, with plans for open farm days where visitors can taste, buy and become part of the Saurwein story. Upcoming events include wine dinners, tasting showcases and farm open days.

In a world awash with mass production, Saurwein Wines is a reminder that the best wines are crafted not only in vineyard and cellar, but in the soul of the maker.

Durbanville IN A BOTTLE

The Durbanville Wine Valley has marked a momentous occasion with a release as bold as the Cape itself: the Durbanville Pinotage 2024, bottled exclusively in magnum.

The wine is a once-o collaboration between 11 of the valley’s celebrated cellars, created to honour three milestones – 200 years of Durbanville, 100 years of Pinotage and a century of Afrikaans as an o cial language. Representing the best of the valley, the participating wineries included Nitida, Meerendal, Maastricht, Klein Roosboom, Groot Phesantekraal, Durbanville Hills, Diemersdal, De Grendel, D’Aria, Mellish Family Wines and Canto. Some contributed fruit, while all played a role in the final barrel selection. The art of blending was entrusted to De Grendel’s acclaimed duo, Morgan Steyn and Charles Hopkins, ensuring the finished wine reflects both collaboration and craftsmanship.

Only 1 170 magnums were produced, making the release as rare as it is generous. Designed for convivial longtable celebrations yet destined to be a

true collector’s treasure, it embodies both celebration and legacy.

In the glass, the Durbanville Pinotage 2024 reveals plush layers of blackcurrant, cherry and prune, lifted by delicate winter spice. Silky tannins and fresh acidity bring poise, while Durbanville’s cool-climate terroir ensures elegance and ageing potential. Perfect partners include slow-roasted lamb, sticky pork ribs from the braai or an indulgent aubergine moussaka.

Beyond the wine, its Delft-blue label tells a story of heritage, featuring illustrations of Durbanville’s church, Cape Dutch homes and Table Mountain, framed by harvest motifs of pumpkins, wheat and grapes.

Presented in Delft-blue packaging finished with gold leaf, each magnum is priced at R1 200 and available exclusively via the Durbanville Wine Valley website and select tasting rooms. A once-in-a-century release, crafted for sharing, celebrating and remembering.

PASSPORT TO THE EXCEPTIONAL

SPA BREAK

ENGLAND’S SOUTH LODGE

Just beyond Surrey’s transition into Sussex, South Lodge is a grand and handsome country house, renowned for its modern and extensive spa. We felt like children in a wellness sweetshop: the spa features include a 22m infinity-edge pool and a thermal suite with a botanical sauna, salt steam room, aromatic infusion room and an awakening bucket shower. The hydro experience continues outdoors with a beautiful natural pool and a heated vitality hydrotherapy pool. Treatments are available in dedicated rooms, along with meals from the Botanica restaurant. In addition to traditional country house accommodation, the Reeds o ers a collection of semi-Scandinavian eco-lodges built around a lake. A short walk through the garden from the spa, these provide an inviting modern stay. If the tranquil lakeside setting isn’t enough, then the spa-enabled copper bathtubs on the deck and the complimentary mini-bar with British bubbly will hit the spot. Should the bottle need replenishing, have more delivered to your room or, as we did, take a short drive to a local wine estate for a quick tasting and restock. exclusive.co.uk/south-lodge

ISLAND ESCAPE

RENAISSANCE KOH SAMUI

I arrived in Thailand just days before the highly anticipated release of White Lotus 3 and headed to the same island where it was filmed: the sun-drenched Koh Samui. With the Four Seasons fully booked (the actual filming location), I chose the five-star Renaissance Koh Samui. For the next few days, I experienced my own White Lotus adventure ... minus the drama, of course.

Accommodation options include comfortable hotel rooms or, my preference, the pool villas with private courtyards and inviting pools. As with most island escapes, full-board or all-inclusive packages o ered the best value, and with three dining options, it was a delightful indulgence, from classic Pad Thai to Massaman Curry and sumptuous Wagyu burgers. At the spa, we enjoyed the best massage we had in Thailand, followed by relaxing in the pool, ocean and our private pool, keeping us blissfully cool. marriott.com

FRANCE: CHÂTEAU DE BERNE

The name Provence exudes an air of European sophistication. It is no surprise since the region is France’s oldest wineproducing area. Desiring to taste my way through the Rosé wines, I visited the impressive Château de Berne, a Relais & Château five-star hotel. Pointed conifers and manicured vines guide the drive in until the striking stone building appears. Provençal heritage and style pervade the experience, combined with understated elegance. My spacious apartment featured a Juliet balcony, where I sipped wine and admired the vines. My two-hour tasting of the Château de Berne range broadened my understanding and appreciation for the wines, and you will want to take home a bottle or two of their iconic square-shaped bottles. Interestingly, wine tourism is not as prevalent in Europe as in South Africa, but the sta were quick to mention that experiences in our beloved Winelands shaped their o erings. The result is a sprawling estate with a labyrinth of discoveries, a world-class spa, excellent dining and an unforgettable experience that rivals any back home. chateauberne.com

CULTURE FIX

MALLORCA’S SON BRULL

While Mallorca’s party reputation might precede it, the last two decades have seen a rise in the island’s luxury o erings, which are far from the maddening crowd. Positioned as a rural sanctuary in the heart of the Mediterranean, the five-star Relais & Chateaux property is perhaps the island’s best-kept secret. Son Brull was initially built as a 12th century Arabic farmhouse, later converted into a monastery in the 18th century. When the Sau family took ownership in the late ‘90s, new life was breathed into it, transforming it into the prestigious boutique hotel it is today. Avoiding the typical glitzy, cookie-cutter resorts, the family chose instead to tap deeply into Mallorcan culture, ensuring every aspect of the hotel and its o erings are rooted in it. From the sta and cuisine to the décor – everything is proudly local and tells the Mallorcan story. For local cultural excursions, visit Can Vidalet to sample local wines, Teixits Vicens for traditional spun textiles, or walk the steep hill to Pollenca’s Puig de Maria convent. sonbrull.com
