Cape Town-based multidisciplinary artist and designer Jan Ernst’s ceramics take inspiration from the natural world and elaborate on the organic in transformative and visionary ways.

TEXT
Inspired by termite mounds, Jan’s Veld candelabra in terracotta clay is an excellent example of his biomorphic design inspiration.
Line and texture are both essential elements of Jan’s work: his curvaceous ceramic forms are beautifully set off by linear modernity of a vintage Gerrit Rietveld chair and plush rug here. The artwork on the wall is by Marolize Southwood, with a Womb table lamp on the wooden plinth and a Twiggy candle holder on the Some of the Parts ceramic side table. The orange Screwed candle is by Okra.
As a teenager, multidisciplinary artist and designer Jan Ernst said he had little sense of what to do after high school. “I was creative, but also very logical – and when my career guidance assessments arrived, the counsellor said my left and right brain scores were pretty much equal,” he remembers. “They suggested I study architecture.” That’s exactly what he did; yet, while architectural studies were indeed the right choice for Jan, with their characteristic blend of creativity and practicality –drawing while doing maths, if you like – he never really felt like a career architect. The urge to create beautiful objects, perhaps more so to work with his hands, was too strong. This is how the world of architecture lost out, and ceramic design gained a new and remarkable exponent.
Jan emerged onto the diverse and vibrant Cape Town ceramics scene in 2020 with a series of organic yet otherworldly candleholders and candelabra that instantly caught the eye. Biomorphic and nature-inspired, his works are playful, almost irreverent and felt delightfully fresh. Those early pieces formed the basis for his ongoing and popular Forest Candelabra range and have subsequently been rendered in various materials other than white stoneware, in a range of bright and bold glazes and colours.
Immediately characteristic of Jan’s work was its combination of expressive, biophilic forms and a bold approach to colour –including embracing its complete absence – as well as his willingness to continually experiment with materials, methods, decorative finishes and the wide variety of objects he chooses to make. The fact that he grew up in a rural environment, surrounded by nature’s shapes, colours and rhythms, is clearly a major influence on all these aspects of his creative process and output.
Jan’s creations are nature-inspired, yet they also eschew obvious realism. Through exploration and alchemic play, they reach out towards a sense of transcendence that perhaps paradoxically conveys a sense of the power and grandeur of the natural world.
His work has appeared in prestigious international craft exhibitions, as well as in the pages and on the covers of design magazines in South Africa and abroad. When we visited his studio, Jan was preparing his Dubai commission and a substantial custom-made piece for a client in Singapore. Simultaneously, he was in the process of creating sculptural pieces for the Cape Town Art Fair. All in all, it’s clear that many more uniquely beautiful things can be expected from this rising star of the ceramic world.

Jan Ernst begins his large installations with expressive charcoal sketches, which are scanned and transformed into digital 3D models. These models guide the creation of hand-sculpted ceramic pieces, often incorporating lighting. Once fired and glazed, the elements are assembled on the wall, echoing the energy of the original drawings.
Some of the pieces in the lyrical new Tide candelabras collection combine cast and polished bronze sections with moulded, scarified clay elements.

In the heart of Cape Town’s East City, between old buildings and new energy, chefs Anouchka Horn and Neil Swart have built more than just restaurants. They have built a story – a layered, collaborative journey that fuses friendship, nostalgia and an unwavering commitment to South African ingredients. Their restaurants, Belly of the Beast, Galjoen and, most recently, Seebamboes, form a trio of culinary experiences that are as personal as they are original, reshaping how locals and visitors engage with the city’s food culture.

eil and Anouchka’s journey began during their formative years in the industry, both working under the mentorship of chef Michael Broughton at the esteemed Terroir restaurant in Stellenbosch. Terroir, known for its rigorous standards and classical approach, was both a crucible and a classroom. In fact, it was here that Neil met his future wife, who was managing the front of house, and where the foundations of his partnership with Anouchka were laid. Their first professional collaboration began at a small bistro in Durbanville called Arugula, where Neil was running the kitchen and needed some help. Anouchka, with her characteristic calm and precision, was the obvious choice. Despite already knowing her well from their days at Terroir, Neil asked her to send through her CV out of formality. As soon as he hung up the phone, he laughed, realised how unnecessary it was and called her back immediately to o er her the job. It was a natural fit from day one and that early partnership laid the groundwork for the seamless working dynamic they share today. Their collaboration is marked by a unique synergy. Disagreements are rare and when challenges arise, it’s never Neil versus Anouchka but rather Neil and Anouchka against the problem. This unity extends to their broader team, fostering an environment where creativity thrives and egos take a backseat. Neil, who feels he had to teach himself to be creative, and Anouchka draw inspiration from nostalgia and family traditions, reimagining them through a contemporary lens. Their culinary philosophy is inclusive, embracing techniques and flavours from across the world, yet grounded in a commitment to local, high-quality ingredients.
A testament to their hands-on approach is the strategic placement of their restaurants. All are located within walking distance on Harrington Street, not as a bid for dominance, but to ensure they can be present, monitoring and supporting their teams without the barrier of travel time. This proximity allows for a level of oversight and involvement that is rare in the industry, contributing to the consistent quality and atmosphere across their establishments.
Belly of the Beast opened in August 2018 with a bold concept: no menu, no waste and just 30 seats. It was an audacious move for a new restaurant, but the idea was simple – serve what they felt like cooking, using whole animals and produce from local farmers, and make every meal an experience. It worked. The restaurant quickly developed a loyal following, attracting diners who trusted Anouchka and Neil to surprise them. They did not disappoint. The food was unapologetically personal, inspired by the dishes they grew up with, refined through their skills and sensibilities as chefs.
Where Belly of the Beast explored the boundaries of meat and nostalgic cooking, Galjoen turns its gaze to the sea. Named after South Africa’s national fish, the restaurant champions a clear, uncompromising mission: to serve only local seafood and honour the country’s coastal heritage. There’s no salmon, no prawns, nothing imported. Instead, the menu showcases kabeljou, hake, mussels, limpets and kelp ... ingredients deeply rooted in South African food traditions but seldom given the spotlight in fine dining. The flavours are unmistakably local, yet the execution is modern, precise and quietly daring. It is more than just beautiful food – it’s a rethinking of what seafood can be and whose stories it should tell.
Above Galjoen, Seebamboes takes this philosophy further. The restaurant explores the interplay between land and sea, o ering a tasting menu experience that ri s on gastronomic nostalgia in a contemporary reimagining of what ‘surf and turf’ can be. And what it should be: playful, celebratory, delicious. The menu blends ingredients in unexpected ways: wagyu brisket with kelp spaghetti and snoek soup with spicy kimchi undertones. The name, Afrikaans for ‘sea bamboo’, reflects the restaurant’s use of local kelp and its role as a symbol of balance between ocean and earth. Seebamboes is wild, playful and quietly radical in how it treats ingredients and flavour.
RESTAURANTS
Together, the three restaurants function almost like chapters in a book. They don’t repeat each other; instead, they expand the story. Each one is built around a di erent idea but is grounded in the same values: sustainability, storytelling and a deep love of South African culture. The goal was never to make trendy restaurants or climb international rankings. It was to create places that feel true to who they are.
That sense of authenticity is perhaps best captured in the word that Anouchka and Neil return to again and again: nostalgia. It is the thread that connects a dish of groenboontjie bredie to a seaweed pasta or a slow-braised pork belly. Anouchka, in particular, is drawn to the comfort foods of her childhood; the meals made by her Ouma, the things that smell and taste like home. But instead of
replicating those dishes, she reimagines them, turning memory into something new. Neil does the same. His food is deeply personal, sometimes surprising, always grounded in a sense of place.
Although, like us mere mortals, both Neil and Anouchka have some guilty pleasures. What could they be, you ask? Well, Neil is a kindred spirit of mine, mentioning the word pizza without hesitation, and Anouchka told me how appreciative she is that her parents are close by, so she can often go over for a braaibroodjie and lamb chops straight o the fire.
Behind the scenes, the culture they have cultivated is just as considered as the food. In an industry known for its pressure and burnout, their kitchens are calm, friendly and collaborative. Laughter is common. So is a sense of family. They do not raise their voices. They train and mentor. Many of their team members have grown with them over the years, moving from one restaurant to another and building careers in an environment that respects them. It’s a point of pride for Neil and Anouchka and part of why their restaurants feel so cohesive. The warmth is not merely for the guests; it runs through the entire operation.
So, what’s next for Neil and Anouchka? We were genuinely blown away to hear that there will be another new addition to the Harrington Street collection planned for early next year. While they have been keeping details close to their chests, we did learn it will be something di erent – and yes, it’ll be right there on Harrington Street. Rumour has it the first round of designs is already in, but we’ll have to wait patiently to see what exciting new venture will emerge from that vibrant stretch; hopefully, sooner rather than later.
Neil and Anouchka shared a simple message for anyone navigating the restaurant world: focus on what truly matters to you. Your passion and personal commitment will make or break your success. For them, that meant staying true to their vision and values and that authenticity has fuelled the growth of not just one but multiple restaurants.
In a city flooded with fleeting restaurant trends and gimmicks, what Anouchka Horn and Neil Swart are crafting feels refreshingly rare. Their work is thoughtful, deeply rooted and, above all, honest. From a small, meat-focused tasting room to an adventurous surf-and-turf venture in a kelpscented loft, they are telling stories through food ... stories about their origins, their passions and the boundless potential of South African cuisine when given the freedom to evolve. This is exactly what they’re doing and I’m excited to see how they continue to shape the culinary landscape.
Harrington Street has become more than just a location. It is a beacon of culinary excellence in South Africa and on the global stage. Neil and Anouchka are leading us into a new era of dining experiences and the future looks deliciously bright.
SHADOW PLAY
Bold ideas meet old bones in this Victorian house in Richmond, a historic Karoo town, where architect Jan Sauer layers mood, memory and a touch of mischief.
PHOTOGRAPHS GREG COX TEXT LORI COHEN PRODUCTION SVEN ALBERDING
FROM THE STREET, it looks like a postcard. A crisp black-and-white tiled patio (referred to as stoep in these parts), hedging with a playful twist and classic Victorian fretwork - all basking under the vast, bright sky of the Karoo. But walk through the front door of this small-town Richmond home, and you realise quickly this house doesn’t play it safe.
Named House of Light and Shadow, it is the work of architect Jan Sauer, who has transformed this slice of history in South Africa’s semi-desert north. The house was once part of a row of bookshops, some of the first structures built in the area. “They had fallen into disrepair,” says Jan. “But I loved them from the start. You could see the potential immediately.”
This is not your typical restoration. Jan, who trained as an architect but has an intuitive eye for interiors, isn’t interested in pastiche or overly polished finishes. He is interested in mood, flow and spaces that feel lived-in. “I don’t like building new things if there’s something old with potential,” he says. “I try to keep the history intact.”
The front of the house sticks closely to its Karoo-Victorian roots. Jan reinstated the original fretwork, repaired broken balustrades and kept the silhouette as it was. But there are clues to what lies beyond: hedges clipped into soft curves, a nonworking windmill topped with a sunflower - a nod to the region’s farming identity and a touch of humour.
Then you step inside and everything shifts. The foyer is dark and dramatic. A suspended installation made from twisted vine salvaged from the garden hovers above a vintage table. Four chandeliers are wrapped around the vine like a sculptural nest. “It sets the tone,” Jan explains. “The house is about contrast. Old and new, light and shadow.”
Jan’s architectural eye is unmistakable throughout the house, but so is his instinct for atmosphere. It is a home that was uncovered, room by room, story by story. “I’m proud of the whole thing,” he says. “Just seeing it come together. Giving it life again.”
In the foyer, the walls are wrapped in a moody ombré wallpaper, fading from charcoal to white. It’s subtle, but the effect is atmospheric, especially when lit from above. “I wanted to play with how light moves through the house,” Jan says. “This wall is all about that transition - dark to light, outside to in.” Wallpaper, Cara Saven Wall Design; in next room, white sofa, Nook; standing light, Smolten.
In the foyer, an old grapevine - removed from the back garden during renovations - was reimagined as sculpture. Jan suspended it above a vintage table and threaded it through a cluster of four chandeliers to create a striking focal point.
The blue room marks a bold shift in the home’s palette. Walls, shelving and even the ceiling are painted in rich cobalt, turning the space into a fully immersive zone. Custom chandeliers made from dried cacti leaves, hang above, drawing the eye upward and reinforcing the room’s sense of scale. Jan collected the leaves and wove them around a steel frame to form this sculptural piece.
In the kitchen, Jan brings his signature palette of contrast into a more functional space. A soft rug underfoot introduces texture and surprise - it’s not what you’d expect in a working kitchen, but it adds warmth. Jan designed the kitchen island using a steel base and a stored marble slab. The open structure allows light to pass through, keeping the room airy and making the piece feel almost like a sculpture. Antique cupboard, bought at auction; rug, Hertex Haus; kitchen island, custom built; pendant lights, Kooperasie Stories.
The main bedroom is serene and textural, with a handmade bedspread by Philip van Staden that picks up on the room’s earthy palette. “I told him the colours and feel I was after, and he just got it,” says Jan. The deep brown walls and soft bedding make the space feel cocooned.
Opposite: In the en suite bathroom, Jan chose a blue-and-white Delft-style wallpaper by Cara Saven as the defining feature. The rich blue-and-white pattern isn’t just a visual choice - it ties the room to Karoo heritage, referencing the ceramics that once lined kitchens and cupboards in homes like this one.
In this twin bedroom, Jan played with scale using oversized, curved headboards to counter the height of the ceiling. Fabrics are mixed intentionally: bold checks, abstract weaves and soft cottons in muddy pinks and olives.
Left: In this en suite bathroom, Jan started with what he had - an old tabletop - and built around it. Two unusually tall mirrors rise nearly to the ceiling. “I loved how they could hold their own in the space,” he said.
DECOR & DESIGN
In this guest bedroom, Jan let loose with pattern and colour. The wallpaper - a graphic print that resembles guinea fowl feathers - sets the tone, while the bedspread, plates and fish prints bring in oranges, greens and playful contrast. The bedspread, custom-made by Philip van Staden, reads like a tapestry.
Opposite: At the back of the house, Jan added a patio - an essential element in Karoo living. The tiled checkerboard floor is a traditional touch, but the space is designed for privacy and shade, tucked away from the street-facing front. Boxy topiary gives the space structure, referencing Victorian gardens, while creating a calm, enclosed feel that connects the house to the garden beyond.
A shaded seating area on the garden terrace is simple but atmospheric. Jan hung oversized panels of white fabric between posts, creating dappled light and giving shade and a softness to the brick underfoot. Table, Nook; chairs and rattan rug, Malawian Wicker.
FORGE FIRES
The new gold standard in fireplaces
There’s a quiet confidence to a room warmed by a fireplace. It doesn’t shout for attention; it glows, it anchors and it welcomes. And when the fire burns behind precision-engineered glass enclosed in sleek steel with a subtle architectural presence, it becomes more than just heat. It becomes part of the room’s design.
Available from Beauty Fires showrooms in Cape Town, Johannesburg and George (as well as online), Forge Fires is the latest innovation from Signi Fires, a well-respected
name in South Africa’s high-end fire feature industry. Known for its world-class fireplaces, firepits and braais, Signi Fires developed Forge Fires as a more accessible and a ordable option, o ering refined aesthetics and excellent performance to a wider clientele, without compromising on quality. Built locally and crafted specifically for South African living, the range reflects the same commitment to engineering excellence that has earned the Signi Fires brand its place in many of the country’s most beautifully built homes.
Since its launch in April, Forge Fires has attracted significant interest from Beauty Fires clients, including homeowners, interior designers and residential project planners. At Decorex Cape Town 2025, the Beauty Fires stand drew a steady stream of designconscious buyers exploring fireplace options for their current builds and upcoming projects. The Forge Fires range clearly struck a chord: visually striking, technically dependable and moderately priced, these are fireplaces that feel at home in wellcurated spaces.
The collection includes both freestanding and built-in models, with widths ranging from 500mm to a commanding 1 200mm, making them suitable for everything from compact reading rooms to spacious openplan living areas.
At the upper end of the scale is the F120 and its built-in counterpart, the i120, the largest hinged-door, closed-combustion fireplaces available in South Africa. It is di cult to put into words just how impressive these units are: the expansive glass provides a sweeping view of the flames, while an integrated air curtain system keeps the glass clean for longer, ensuring uninterrupted visual impact. With heating capacities of up to 20kW, they are designed to warm large spaces e ortlessly, whether in a doublevolume living room or a luxury lodge lounge.
Yet Forge Fires has not overlooked the power of restraint. The vertical TEN, at just 450mm wide, o ers the same engineering excellence in a slimmer format; perfect for elegant studies, guest suites or intimate corners. Its tall silhouette creates a bold yet compact presence that works beautifully in these smaller footprints without sacrificing performance, comfortably heating areas up to 108m2, proving less can be more.
Simple yet e ective design features, such as top and bottom air inlets for precise fire control and a removable ashtray for easy maintenance, make these fireplaces as practical as they are attractive. The built-in range has also been designed to slide into typical existing hearths or cavities found in older homes, o ering an elegant, lowdisruption upgrade when replacing outdated open fireplaces.
Beauty Fires has embraced the Forge Fires range as part of its handpicked selection of design-forward heating solutions, with models on display in all of its showrooms. These fireplaces are particularly well suited
to modern builds and upmarket estate homes, with their steel bodies painted in deep black and elegantly proportioned glass. They sit comfortably alongside stone, timber or concrete interiors, blending seamlessly into carefully considered living spaces or standing confidently as design features in their own right.
Forge Fires speaks to a new kind of luxury: quiet, purposeful and grounded in South African craftsmanship. It’s about investing in lasting warmth, in every sense of the word. For those building homes of distinction, Forge Fires is a range worth considering, and Beauty Fires is the perfect place to experience it.
The entire collection is underpinned by a potent dual-combustion system. This technology not only prolongs burn time and decreases wood consumption, but also produces a cleaner, more e cient fire … something increasingly valued by environmentally conscious homeowners. Discover the full range at www.beautyfires.com or visit Beauty Fires at showrooms in Cape Town, Johannesburg and George.
Cycle syncing
Cycle
syncing your monthly rhythm.
syncing syncing
Your menstrual cycle is more than just a monthly inconvenience – it’s a built-in guide to your body’s needs and energy shifts. Tuning into your cycle through food, environment, lifestyle and mental wellbeing can help you feel more balanced, empowered and at ease. One of the most empowering narrative flips for me was to view my bleed as my monthly report card. Your period tells you so much about what is going on in your body. After years of
extensive research and personal experience, here is what I learnt is best to support yourself in each phase of your cycle.
FOOD: EAT WITH YOUR CYCLE
What you eat can deeply impact your hormones. Forget the fads and the trends. Most of the ‘studies’ on diets are only conducted on men anyway because the results from female studies had so many di erent variables. This is because we cannot paint our entire month with the same brush. Let’s break it down, in super simple terms:
n During your menstrual phase, nourish yourself with warm, comforting meals like soups, stews and iron-rich foods (e.g. lentils, spinach, red meat) to replenish lost nutrients.
n In the follicular phase, focus on fresh, energising meals with lean protein and veggies – think grain bowls, broths and ginger tea.
n Ovulation is the time for light, antiinflammatory foods like berries, fish and colourful veggies to support detox and high energy. (Ovulation phase is the star of the show! Eat as if you feel like a vibing superstar.)
n In the luteal phase, cravings might spike, so balance blood sugar with slow-burning carbs like sweet potatoes and magnesium-rich foods like dark chocolate and pumpkin seeds to support mood and reduce PMS symptoms.
ENVIRONMENT: CREATE A SUPPORTIVE SPACE
The environment can nurture (or drain) your energy. During menstruation, surround yourself with soft lighting, warm blankets and quiet, like your cosy cave.
As you move into the follicular and ovulation phases, open windows, invite sunlight in and declutter. This is a time to engage with the world and your space.
In the luteal phase, progesterone kicks in, which means we need calm energy in and around us. Start winding down your surroundings again: think calming scents, fewer social commitments and grounding colours. Small shifts in your home or workspace can sync beautifully with your internal changes.
LIFESTYLE: FLOW WITH YOUR PHASES
Trying to push through your cycle the same way every week can lead to burnout (trust me, I learnt the hard way). We are not men and we should not be going full force all the time. During menstruation, allow rest, short walks, gentle yoga and early nights.
In the follicular phase, your energy rises as a result of a spike in testosterone, which is great for strength training, cardio, brainstorming or trying new hobbies. Ovulation is a time of peak energy and confidence, perfect for social events, public speaking or hard workouts (and hitting those PBs!).
When the luteal phase arrives, slow down: prioritise planning, nesting and more restorative movement like
Pilates or Yin classes. Aligning your actions with your energy can lead to greater productivity and peace.
MENTAL HEALTH: HONOUR YOUR EMOTIONAL SHIFTS
Your emotional state often mirrors your hormone fluctuations. Menstruation may bring introspection or vulnerability. Use this time to journal or rest without judgment. The follicular and ovulation phases can feel like a mental high. Use them to connect, create and share ideas. In the luteal phase, anxiety or irritability might arise. Support yourself with extra sleep, reduce screen time and weave a rmations into your days. Being aware of these shifts and showing yourself compassion through each phase helps
reduce emotional overwhelm and strengthens your mental resilience. Remember, you are only human, and you will feel many di erent emotions through your cycle. This is what keeps the journey interesting.
Cycle syncing is not about perfection; it’s about paying attention. It’s about reading your report card and understanding what you can tweak for the next cycle. When you align your food, environment, lifestyle and mental health with your body’s natural rhythm, you not only balance hormones, you deepen your connection to yourself. This is more important than any diet, pill or life hack. This is the root of homeostasis within yourself. Start small, stay curious and let your cycle be a source of strength, not stress. This is your true superpower.
THE CYCLE
The menstrual cycle is like a well-choreographed performance with four main acts: menstruation, the follicular phase, ovulation and the luteal phase. Each phase plays a unique role in prepping your body for a potential pregnancy (or just keeping things in balance).
Let’s break it down.
1. MENSTRUATION: THE CLEAN-UP CREW ARRIVES
This is the grand opening. The uterine lining, no longer needed, takes a graceful exit – aka your period. You might feel cramps or fatigue, but this is your body pressing the reset button. This phase usually lasts a few days.
2. FOLLICULAR PHASE: THE PREP WORK BEGINS
Right after your period, your ovaries get busy. They start prepping an egg for its big moment. Meanwhile, your uterine lining begins rebuilding into a cosy, cushiony space.
3. OVULATION: SHOWTIME!
Around day 14 (in a 28-day cycle), it’s go-time. The star of the show –a mature egg – makes its dramatic exit from the ovary and heads into the fallopian tube. This is the prime time for pregnancy.
4. LUTEAL PHASE: THE WAITING GAME
After ovulation, the follicle that released the egg transforms into the corpus luteam, a hormone-secreting powerhouse. It keeps the uterine lining ready and waiting. If there’s no fertilised egg? The cycle starts again with menstruation.
MEET SHANNON SMITH
Shannon Smith founded Dacha Wellness and Bush Wellness Skincare and is a fierce advocate for holistic, plant-based living. Her wellness journey began the hard way – after struggling with burnout, hormone imbalances and total exhaustion. A former wellness coach caught in the cycle of high-protein diets and intense workouts, Shannon hit a wall. "I was completely burnt out. My hormones had flatlined, my thyroid was overactive. I didn't even recognise myself," she recalls. Determined to heal, she shifted her lifestyle towards natural, plant-based wellness and spiritual practices. With the help of supportive tools like magnesium and vitamin B, she reclaimed her health and her sense of self. Now, Shannon channels that transformation into empowering others through her wellness brands. When she is not helping people live more vibrantly, you'll find her hiking with her dog, soaking up nature or chasing waterfalls (literally).
TWEST COASTwandering
he West Coast is a uniquely quieter yet somewhat wilder stretch of coastline compared to others. The Atlantic meets the land and gently licks at the edges of the fynbos and stranded belts. Despite its appearance of bareness, it is very much alive, just at a desirably slower pace.
Sunbirds flit in and out of the bushes, maritime birds flock between the estuaries and vleis, dolphins cruise the turquoise waves, padstals o er local treats, and West Coast locals provide warm yet laid-back hospitality. The experience was gentle, restorative and memorable. So much so that for 12 years, I have returned to celebrate my birthday on the West Coast. Below, I share two of my favourite spots, both visited multiple times over the years.
DUNE ROSE, YZERFONTEIN
Barely an hour’s drive from Cape Town, Yzerfontein is one of the larger West Coast
The tradition began 12 years ago when I moved to the Cape, and my parents visited for my first birthday after relocating. None of us had been to the region before and we set off without knowing what to expect… BY
towns and has spread its wings along the coast in recent years. A string of posh homes is tucked away in the dunes at the quieter end of town. Dune Rose is one, aptly named after the Asian flowers that adorn the dunes. At this enviable location, my friends and I gathered for a weekend of celebrations.
While I would ordinarily introduce ‘beautiful homes with stunning master bedrooms’, Dune Rose feels like a ‘stunning master bedroom, within a beautiful house’ –by far the most spacious principal bedroom I’ve ever stayed in. Almost completely surrounded by glass, the ocean and sunsets serve as the continuous backdrop.
A décor of wood and stone in a warm colour palette creates an almost zen-like ambience throughout. Along with the master bedroom, the home o ers three additional en suite rooms, all leading to the voluminous central living space. For soaking up the sunshine, the back deck
JARED RUTTENBERG
features a pool set in a lush garden, while the ocean side of the villa boasts a large deck, a braai and a dining area overlooking the ocean.
From the veranda, a rocky outcrop is easily seen on the southern end of the beach. Hidden among the rocks is my favourite tidal pool in South Africa: two natural rock pools create an almost perfect heart shape from above. The left ‘ventricle’ o ers shallow warm water, while the right one is slightly cooler with shoulder-height swimming. If you add a dip in the ocean, you have a three-part hydrotherapy experience at your doorstep.
After swimming, it’s a short walk back to Dune Rose, welcomed by a hot outdoor shower to wash o seawater and sand. On the deck, the warmth of the fire is paired with champagne on ice. The peace o ered by the villa is a reminder that rest is not a luxury, but a necessity for the soul. dunerose.co.za
COASTwandering
GONANA HOUSES, PATERNOSTER
Big celebrations aside, it was time for something more intimate. My partner and I followed the coast an hour further north, with the GPS set for the picturesque fishermen’s village of Paternoster. I was eager to try one of the Gonana twin, whitewashed houses. Sharing a property, Aloe is the one-bedroom option, and my favourite is the two-bedroom Acacia House. They are two of the accommodations o ered by the Gonana Collection.
Upstairs, a large open-plan area leads to a balcony, o ering a braai and prime sunset views. Two bedrooms continue the minimalistic and earthy theme downstairs, plus a veranda and outdoor shower.
Aloe and Acacia are just a two-minute walk from the beach and the Gonana Guesthouse, where you can enjoy a cooked breakfast, a drink on the oceanfront veranda or a refreshing dip in the pool.
It is less than a five-minute walk from Acacia to several enticing Paternoster activities. Get oriented with a cycle through the village and then on the beach with the exhilarating Wow Ebikes Tours, led by passionate local guides. Still staying active, explore the bays with Paternoster Kayak and encounter some local marine life, including penguins, dolphins, whales and more.
Tutored tastings, 24 wines by the glass, a range of bottles on the shelf and tempting platters – this all served up in the classy Paternoster Wine Lounge. Finish o with a hearty meal at Leto, where the views and décor are as wondrous as the food.
Back at Acacia House, enjoy a warm outdoor shower before savouring a braai-side drink while the sun slowly sinks, painting the sky in every shade of yellow, orange and red. The ‘Weskus Beskus’ magic is merely one of the reasons why, despite a thousand places to celebrate my birthday, I return like a pilgrim, happily, year after year.

Where art meets time ARCEAU HERMÈS LOCOMOTION
Hermès has released the Arceau Hermès Locomotion, a limited-edition timepiece inspired by Ugo Bienvenu’s futuristic and pop-art vision of the Faubourg Saint-Honoré boutique. Originally conceived for the Hermès Locomotion scarf, the artwork now comes alive on the dial of the iconic Arceau watch, designed by Henri d’Origny in 1978.
Crafted through layered miniature painting, the dial creates a striking 3D e ect – enhanced by vivid hues of pink, yellow, blue and green – both beneath and on the inner side of the sapphire crystal. At its centre, silver-toned leaf hands subtly mark the time.
Housed in a 38 mm white gold case set with 71 diamonds and crowned with a rose-cut diamond, this poetic watch is powered by the self-winding Manufacture Hermès H1912 movement. A pale mauve alligator strap completes the 12-piece numbered edition. A celebration of colour, craftsmanship and imagination.

• A few thinly sliced onion rings

EUREKA MILLS CAKE FLOUR
CRISPY AIRFRYER TORTILLA CHIPS WITH GUACAMOLE
EUREKA MILLS WRAPS
INGREDIENTS
• 4 Eureka Mills Wraps
• Oil spray (Spray & Cook – olive oil or regular)
• Fine salt
GUACAMOLE:
• 2 ripe avocados
• 1/4 red onion, finely chopped
• 1 medium roma tomato, finely chopped
• 1/4 tsp chilli flakes
• Zest and juice of 1 lime
• Fine salt
METHOD
• Slice the wraps into 8 even triangles.
• Preheat your airfryer to 175°C if it requires preheating.
• Lay the triangle pieces on a board and spray them with cooking oil, then lightly sprinkle with salt. Turn them all over and repeat on the other side.
• Place a single layer of wrap pieces in your airfryer basket, ensuring they do not overlap (you will need to cook these in batches). Cook in the airfryer at 175°C for 5–6 minutes, turning half way. Check them often while cooking, as times may vary.
• Once golden and crisp, remove from the airfryer and allow to cool. Repeat with another batch, until all chips have been cooked.

• Transfer the mixture to a bowl and add the baking powder and flour. Mix together until well combined. If the mixture feels too soft, add more flour, a tablespoon at a time, until you are able to shape the mixture into balls.
• Shape the mixture into balls, about golf ball sized.

ASPIRE WINE
PINOTAGE TURNS
Pinotage: it’s bold, it’s proudly local and it’s just turned 100! That’s right – this uniquely South African wine grape, born in a university lab in 1925, is celebrating a full century of character, controversy and global comeback. And frankly, it’s never tasted better. BY MORGAN
STEWART
The story begins with Professor Abraham Izak Perold, a viticulture visionary with a wild idea: what if he crossed the delicate, noble Pinot Noir grape with the hardy, heatloving Cinsaut (then known as Hermitage)? The goal was to create a grape with the finesse of Burgundy and the guts to thrive in South Africa’s sun-drenched vineyards. The result? Pinotage. A name that cleverly nods to its parentage and a grape that would go on to define an entire nation’s winemaking identity.
But Pinotage didn’t always have it easy. For years, it was treated like the di cult middle child of the wine world. Some early versions were, well ... let’s just say a bit rustic. Winemakers persisted, experimenting with oak, terroir and technique. Fast forward to the 21st century, and Pinotage has found its groove. From rich, full-bodied reds brimming with dark cherry, plum and mocha to fresh, modern styles with juicy fruit and gentle spice, there is a Pinotage for everyone.
It’s also a grape that reflects South Africa’s diversity and daring spirit. You will find it thriving in Stellenbosch’s structured reds, the raw beauty of Swartland’s natural wines and funky, chilled versions made for sipping by the pool. There are sparkling Pinotage, rosé Pinotage and co ee-infused styles with cult followings.
This year, the centenary celebrations are pouring across the country. Wineries are hosting special tastings, releasing rare vintages and sharing stories from the vineyard that honour the legacy of this homegrown hero. Wine festivals and braais are toasting to a grape that has come full circle – from underdog to international darling.
So whether you are clinking glasses in the Winelands or picking up a bottle for your next Sunday lunch, know this: you’re sipping on a century of South African innovation, passion and resilience.
Pinotage at 100? Still spicy. Still strong. Still so very South African. Cheers to that!

A legacyPOURED INTO EVERY BOTTLE
Honouring the life and spirit of Danie Malan of Allesverloren. BY MORGAN STEWART
legacy
In the picturesque Riebeek Valley of the Swartland, where the vineyards climb the slopes of Kasteelberg, and the light seems to linger just a little longer over the vines, the name Allesverloren holds more meaning than ever before. It is here that the legacy of a South African wine pioneer, Danie Malan, continues to shape the land, the wine and the future of a beloved estate.
Danie Malan, who passed away in late 2024, was not just a winemaker; he was the heart of Allesverloren. For decades, he stewarded the farm with an unwavering commitment to quality, heritage and innovation. To those who knew him – as father, friend, mentor, and colleague – his presence was as integral to the estate as the sun and soil themselves.
His passing was deeply felt, echoing the name of the farm, which means ‘all is lost’. Although, as his family and team quickly remind us, the sentiment is not one of defeat. Instead, it is a call to remember the courage, tenacity and values that have endured through six generations and now guide Allesverloren into a bold new chapter.
Today, his children, Danielle and Fanie Malan, continue the family story alongside a dedicated team that includes Alastair Rimmer, Kara Botha and Brad Gold.
Together, they are charting a future that honours Danie’s legacy while ushering in exciting innovations. “Danie was always a believer in embracing progress without forgetting where you come from,” says Danielle. “We know he would be proud of where we’re headed.”
That future includes the 2025 vintage, a harvest Danie had the opportunity to help shape before his passing. Early signs point to an excellent year, with standout fruit from Tinta Barroca and Cabernet Sauvignon. The season’s moderate conditions have allowed for a slow, even ripening that promises wines of great depth and character.
Alongside the new vintage, Allesverloren is undergoing a transformation that is both visual and philosophical. The estate has unveiled a fresh look across its Swartland range; elegant new labels that pay homage to the brand’s deep roots while signalling a refined direction forward. Their recent
recognition at the WineMag Label Design Awards, with the Chenin Blanc 2024 winning accolades for its concept and shelf appeal, is a testament to the team’s commitment to excellence in every detail.
That’s not all. A brand-new website now serves as a digital doorway to the estate, celebrating its history while sharing the evolving story of Allesverloren with wine lovers everywhere. Later this year, the estate will also introduce The Arsonist, a bold new blend that embodies heritage and forwardthinking winemaking.
Yet, through all the change, the soul of Allesverloren remains constant. Danie’s influence is found in every decision, every bottle and every step forward. His belief in nurturing the land and its people and crafting wines with integrity and purpose endures as the estate’s guiding star.
So now is the time – whether it’s a visit to the farm or opening a bottle at home – to reconnect with Allesverloren. In every sip, you will find the story of a man whose passion lives on. A man who proved that even when all seems lost, legacy, love and great wine prevail.

MEETS FINE WINE Fine art
Hazendal Wine Estate has recently launched its Artist Series | Limited Edition, a remarkable release that celebrates the meeting point of contemporary South African art and exceptional winemaking.
GUIDED BY THE curatorial vision of Khanyisile Mbongwa, the estate commissioned celebrated South African artist Athi-Patra Ruga to create an original artwork for the Hazendal Prestige Brut Cap Classique 2017 label.
Limited to just 1 500 bottles worldwide, the release features a vintage blend of 62% Chardonnay and 38% Pinot Noir, crafted from Hazendal’s estate-grown grapes. After resting on the lees for seven years, the wine was disgorged with zero dosage in 2024, resulting in a refined Cap Classique of remarkable elegance and depth.
Each bottle is encased in a hand-crafted African pine chest and accompanied by a curatorial booklet detailing the story behind the artwork, the wine and the creative collaboration.
TASTING NOTES
An intense and expressive nose opens with lemon blossom, lime and caramelised ginger, unfolding into layers of butter and biscuit – hallmarks of seven years on the lees. Comprising Chardonnay and 38% Pinot Noir, the latter contributes subtle red apple and plum skin nuances to the aromatic profile. The palate is precise, vibrant and bone-dry, with zero dosage upon disgorgement in 2024. The extended lees ageing lends both richness and a fine, integrated mousse. A long, tapering finish delivers a lingering echo of clementine and bright citrus. Fresh and refined, with significant potential for further tertiary complexity. Drink now through 2030.
Renowned wine writer Malu Lambert remarked, “The vibrant packaging hints at the bottle’s energetic contents,” awarding it a stellar 94/100, a sentiment echoed by international critics.

BEST OF BARBADOS
BY JARED RUTTENBERG
B
Disembarking, the heat embraces you first, quickly followed by wide smiles. The Bajans are infectiously happy people – and for good reason. Barbados is home to pristine white sands and clear turquoise waters, boasts a rich culture, and enjoys plenty of sunshine; the island features in the top 10 sunniest destinations globally, with 3 000 hours of annual sunshine. Despite a tumultuous history, the country has made significant strides. Since gaining independence in 1966 and declaring itself a republic in 2021, today, Barbados boasts a stable economy and a thriving tourism industry, both compelling reasons to visit. While there are no direct flights from South Africa yet, Barbados has air access from the UK and the USA, making it a warm addition to work or vacation trips to either destination; plus, there is rare visa-free access for South Africans.
Being my first visit to the Caribbean, the first stop was the beach. ‘Platinum Coast’ fulfils every dream you have conjured up of Barbados from films and glossy magazines; sunseekers demurely saunter from lounger to ocean, exuding e ortless barefoot chic. Beach club sta ensured a steady flow of Rum Punches from the bar, while foxtail palms rustled in the gentle sea breeze overhead. With tourism as the focus, accommodation is abundant. Few resorts, however, can claim to have hosted guests since 1887. The Crane Barbados sprawls across the cli tops, and in true resort style, restaurants and bars are dotted throughout the large property. With supremely spacious rooms and six pools spread over the property, it was the perfect starting point for us and the many families enjoying the resort life. Sand seekers could take an elevator down the cli to the private beach, where waves flowed as steadily as the drinks at the adjacent bar.

Staring at the aquamarine horizon, the call to explore could no longer be ignored. The island’s finest yacht experience is the Cat & The Fiddle Luxury Charters. From the variety of luxurious cruises, we picked the five-hour excursion, which included swimming and snorkelling stops, followed by a lunch stop with a beautifully laid bu et spread. The Cat & The Fiddle Luxury Charters sta spoil you throughout, constantly topping up glasses and ensuring your comfort.
Back on terra firma, driving about the island reveals the charming blend of architecture in Barbados: Jacobean, Palladian, Georgian and Victorian styles, along with the distinctive coral stone buildings and wooden chattel houses. In many places, the stone is blackened with time, giving an aged but not defeated feel. One of the best ways to take it all in is through an entertaining ride in the iconic reggae buses. Once aboard, you can’t help but smile as the wind blasts through the open windows and the music, where the DJs constantly add their spirited commentary. These and the regular buses (for a somewhat quieter ride) are a ordable ways to easily navigate the island.
Following the adage that ‘Boutique is Best,’ the next stay was the smaller, intimate Little Good Harbour, o ering all the warm service you would expect from a Mr & Mrs Smith hotel. Double-storey rooms and villas are peacefully set along the lush garden paths, including two beautiful pools for toweltanning.
Metres away, the hotel’s oceanside restaurant and beach club present an oh-soperfect harbour setting. My jaw dropped, and I knew I had found my favourite enclave on the island. The Fish Pot is a dreamy eatery that we’ve adored; an intimate restaurant that floats above the sand, with gourmet fare and the best Rum Punch we had on the island. When we finished eating, it was just two steps to flop down onto the private loungers. Later, the little harbour o ers sheltered swimming, or a walk on the jetty allows you to jump onto the floating ‘sea chills’ or swim to the pontoon. littlegoodharbourbarbados.com
Rum is synonymous with Barbados and the Caribbean ... for good reason: it’s the birthplace of the sugar-derived tipple. Early in the production of sugar in the West Indies, a few intrepid plantation owners discovered a strong spirit could be created when molasses was allowed to ferment and then distilled and the resultant rum was dubbed ‘a brew hot enough to kill the devil himself’.
Over 317 years old, Mount Gay is o cially the oldest operating distillery in the world, a production that predates many countries. Various tours are on o er, giving you a chance to learn how the three ingredients of rum, water, yeast and molasses are combined to make rum. Julie Ann – Mount Gay’s current distiller – is proudly local and one of the few women in the industry. Post-tour, we opted for the Cocktail Masterclass, where our mixologist walked us through rustling up various cocktails. Rum Punch is the ubiquitous national drink and you will constantly hear the recipe recited: 1 of sour, 2 of sweet, 3 of strong, 4 of weak, finished with dashes of bitters and a sprinkle of nutmeg.
Reluctantly boarding the plane home, the question lingered: would the memories remain? With three litres of Mount Gay from duty-free and the recipe firmly memorised, every Rum Punch at home would instantly transport us back to the gem of the Caribbean Sea.
WHERE TO DINE
The island may be small, but you will be spoilt for dining choices. Here are my top four.
1. LONE STAR
Undoubtedly one of Barbados’ must-visit spots, with an impressive number of covers, diners enjoy flavour-filled meals while the ocean laps at the nearby shore at Lonestar Barbados. The clean and playful aesthetic adds to the magic and the regular live music completes the experience.
2. CHAMPERS
3. LA CABANE
With Champers’ clifftop location, the waves crash constantly below. Sumptuous cocktails are followed by the island’s finest international cuisine classics, with a few local twists. Book early and ask for a cliffside table.
4. JUJU’S BEACH BAR
This oceanside eatery has earned much acclaim and for all the right reasons: juicy local cuisine (the smoked-roast chicken is to die for), enticing cocktails and rest-your-feet-in-the-sand barefoot La Cabane Barbados chic.
This beach bar is the most affordable on the island’s most desirable stretch of sand. Slip off your lounger at the local beach club and enjoy a burger and Rum Punch, with the sublime Juju’s Beach Bar views complimentary.

POWER MEETS
Meet the updated Volkswagen Touareg V6 TDI R-Line. BY VANN VAN STADEN
Some SUVs are designed to make a noise and are flashy, oversized and aggressively styled. The updated Volkswagen Touareg V6 TDI R-Line takes a di erent route. It’s a vehicle that exudes quiet confidence, with luxury and technology woven seamlessly into a package that feels purpose-built for those who value sophistication without excess.
This isn’t about trying too hard. It is about getting it absolutely right.
SUBTLE STRENGTH WITH A POLISHED EDGE
The Touareg’s recent facelift doesn’t scream for attention; it commands it. Sharper lines, a wider grille and new IQ.Light HD matrix headlights give the front end more presence without overdoing it. Around the back, its sleek LED strip connects the taillamps and highlights the newly illuminated VW badge, subtly signalling this is something premium. It is the sort of design that works just as well pulling up to a boutique lodge in the Cape Winelands as it does gliding through Johannesburg tra c.
WHERE CALM MEETS CAPABILITY
Step into the cabin, and it is immediately clear the Touareg was designed for modern life. It’s high-tech, yes, but also warm and welcoming. The R-Line trim includes luxurious leather seats with full electric adjustment, and the ambient lighting system now o ers 30 colours across multiple zones, allowing you to tailor the ambience to suit your mood or the moment.
The new centre console materials feel softer to the touch, adding another layer of refinement. With the expansive 15-inch Innovision touchscreen, everything from maps to music to vehicle settings is at your fingertips. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, improved voice control and rapid USB-C charging round out a digital experience that just works e ortlessly.
SMOOTH, STRONG AND SORTED
Under the bonnet is Volkswagen’s trusted 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel, producing 190kW and a solid 600Nm of torque. That translates into a confident, muscular drive, whether you are overtaking on the highway, tackling a steep climb or simply enjoying a smooth coastal cruise.
The 8-speed automatic gearbox shifts with grace, and the 4Motion all-wheel drive keeps things steady in all conditions. Thanks to adaptive air suspension, the ride remains composed over bumps and uneven tarmac, providing a floating sensation typically reserved for much more expensive German rivals.
With its rear-axle steering, this large SUV shrinks in the city, turning more tightly and driving with surprising agility.
BUILT FOR EVERYDAY ADVENTURES
It has a ground clearance of 215 mm and a variety of drive modes, so the Touareg is able to handle more than just the school run or business commute. While you may never take it on to serious 4x4 trails, gravel roads, mountain passes and unexpected detours are tackled with ease, all the more so with a complete surround-view camera system and o -road settings that manage traction and stability intelligently. This is the kind of SUV that suits your lifestyle, not just the lifestyle you post about.
SAFETY AND TECH THAT WORK IN THE BACKGROUND
The Touareg continues to impress with its suite of intelligent driver assistance features. Travel Assist supports semi-autonomous driving at all speeds, making long-distance trips less tiring, while Night Vision adds an extra layer of confidence for late-night drives. Everything is engineered to support, not distract, exactly what you want in a luxury SUV.
GROWN-UP, GROUNDED LUXURY
In a market filled with loud badges and biggeris-better thinking, the updated Volkswagen Touareg V6 TDI R-Line is a breath of fresh, refined air. It o ers genuine luxury, stateof-the-art tech, and real-world comfort, all wrapped in an understated but thoroughly stylish design.
Yes, the competition is fierce, and yes, you could spend a little more and get a Porsche badge or a little less and end up in something less memorable. However, the Touareg sits beautifully in that sweet spot, discreet, desirable and ready to enhance your everyday. It’s not just a premium SUV. It is a reminder that, sometimes, the best things speak softly yet carry a significant presence. Having spent some time behind the wheel of this steed, we could not help but give it a new tagline: Volkswagen Touareg – Because living well should feel e ortless.
