Jalaun Schultz never imagined she’d become an artist. Growing up, art was not even an option at her school, and she pursued a degree in law at Stellenbosch University instead. But the creative spark was always there, waiting for the right moment. BY JENNIFER CAMPBELL
That moment came in her early forties when she stepped away from full-time work to help her husband in his wine business while raising their two children. With a little more time on her hands, she realised that if she did not at least try to paint, she might regret it forever.
Desperate to learn, Jalaun threw herself into the world of painting, absorbing everything she could about techniques, textures and materials. Without formal training, she experimented and explored, finding her own expressive style along the way. For her, art is more than just a creative outlet – it’s a passion, a calling, and a way to truly be herself.
Jalaun’s work is a vibrant blend of realism with a touch of abstraction. Her paintings often feature recognisable subjects but with unexpected elements; whether in the background, in the play of light and shadow, or in subtle, abstract details that invite the viewer to look closer. This mix of styles creates a sense of depth and intrigue, almost like a doorway into another world.
From lush gardens to beautifully painted plates, Jalaun finds inspiration all around her. She is drawn to the richness of nature, the emotional impact of colour and the creativity found in everyday life. But beyond the visuals, she’s fascinated by the resilience of the human spirit, a theme that often weaves its way into her work.
For Jalaun, painting is not just something she does; it’s part of who she is. It brings her a deep sense of peace and fulfilment, and she believes creativity exists in everyone, even if it’s not always nurtured. Her journey proves it is never too late to chase a dream. And the best part? The journey never ends. With every painting, she’s still learning, evolving and finding new ways to bring beauty and joy to those who see her work.

Sometimes, when we go to a restaurant, we are so blown away that it’s not easy to even describe. How do you describe a masterpiece of art? It’s hard to put into words because it’s different for everyone who visits there. That’s what we experienced at FYN ... a masterpiece. Every part of the experience was crafted for one purpose: to excite those who come through their doors. BY
ROBERT VOERMAN
FYN, located in the heart of Cape Town, is a refined yet boundary-pushing dining experience that blends Japanese precision with South African ingredients and flavours. Helmed by chef Peter Tempelho , FYN embraces a contemporary, almost minimalist aesthetic, featuring an open kitchen and sleek, modern décor that focuses on the artistry of the food. Japanese kaisekistyle dining, emphasising seasonal ingredients, balance and a seamless selection of dishes, profoundly influences the menu. With its intimate yet energetic atmosphere, breathtaking views of the Mother City and an ever-evolving menu, FYN o ers a truly unique fine dining experience that bridges continents and celebrates the best of South Africa’s terroir.
On a Friday afternoon, my companion and I sat down by the window, looking out at the beautiful Table Mountain. A charismatic and charming young man, Ryan guided us through our 10 courses. Clearly an expert in his field, there was nothing he wasn’t ready for. Hot towels were brought for us to cleanse our hands in preparation for the moments to come. The beautiful table setting – dark wood and comfortable leather chairs – made us settle in excitedly. Ryan brought us our menus and a welcoming glass of Anthonij Rupert’s L’Ormarins Cap Classique. Fruity and refreshing, it excited our palates as we browsed through the cocktail menu and examined the courses awaiting us.
My first choice for drinks was a pear and grain Old Fashioned cocktail infused with pear Woodford Réserve, banana and buckwheat oleo and walnut bitters, served with popped sorghum. My companion opted for the Lychee Sparkle mocktail, a carbonated blend of lychee purée, pear and verjuice. Just as our cocktails arrived, we were introduced to one of FYN’s most valuable assets: service and beverage director Jennifer Hugé. It is impossible to overstate her her impact. Di cult to describe, she seems to have a hand in every part of the FYN experience, from sommelier to maître d’hôtel. Few people we have encountered have as much knowledge and passion as Jennifer does.
Then Ryan, our server, arrived with our first course, and we couldn’t wait. Listed on the menu simply as tuna with aged local cheese and Cape rough skin lemon, kombujime yellowtail with soutslaai and cucamelon, and Lambert’s Bay abalone with miso wakame, each dish showcased an exquisite understanding of seafood. The standout was the Lambert’s Bay abalone. Typically firm and chewy, ours was sliced beautifully thin, delivering a delicate yet intense flavour accentuated by the umami-packed miso and wakame, along with a texture that was to die for. A welcome surprise was the house-made pickled vegetables, including red cabbage, daikon and our absolute favourite, ume, a pickled Japanese sour plum bursting with savoury, sweet and sour notes.
The second course was nothing short of phenomenal. It is the one dish that has remained on the menu from day one: burnt mushroom custard with a Hokkaido milk bun. Without spoiling the surprise of its presentation, the fresh-from-the-oven milk bun was steaming and slightly salty, paired with a mushroom purée that highlighted just how expert chefs can elevate simple ingredients. The humble mushroom was transformed into a dish that took our breath away, making us pause to say, "Wow."
After a quick refill of pickles, Ryan surprised us again. A small charcoal-powered cooking pot was placed between us; its heat melted the African bird’s eye chilli-infused butter and charcoalgrilled lemon before our eyes, filling the air with a mouthwatering aroma. Before us, a beautiful platter of raw shellfish awaited: a plump langoustine tail and striking blue Obsiblue prawns from New Caledonia. We were given the opportunity to bathe them in the warm, lemony butter to our liking, resulting in a peri-peri prawn course that was nothing short of indulgent.
It felt like the right time for another cocktail. I chose the Cape Coastal Martini, made with tru e vodka and vermouth, garnished with kelp and pickled ume, while my companion, sticking to mocktails, opted for the Peach Yügure Highball, a mix of white peach, yuzu, pandan leaves and green tea.
Our next course saw us split between the ‘experience’ menu and the theatrical pescatarian option. I chose the Karoo wagyu temaki with renosterbos nikiri, Ishikawa rice and yakinori. Without revealing too much, Ryan had great fun masterfully searing the wagyu on a cedar wood dish in front of us. My companion, meanwhile, had nasu dengaku, a smokey aubergine preparation served with the same fragrant rice that was garnished with menma (fermented bamboo shoots) and all alongside a delicate wasabi oil-based dipping sauce.
The menus converged again with seared chokka, sesame sauce and Madagascan caviar. The squid, sliced so thin it resembled noodles, rested atop a silky sesame sauce, crowned with plump caviar eggs.
For the next course, our proteins di ered again, but the dish composition remained the same. I had Laingsburg lamb neck, while my companion enjoyed otoro, the most decadent, fatty cut of tuna. Both were served with Wineland’s artichokes, wild garlic and sorrel gremolata, and grated walnut, creating a beautifully balanced, richly flavoured dish.
For my final cocktail, I chose the Yuzu No Taiyo; a mix of mango syrup, tequila, pickled ginger and kosho foam – smoky, sweet, with a punchy ginger spice. My companion finished her mocktail journey with a Shiso Spritz, a blend of pineapple syrup, red shiso and pineapple shrub, and homemade grapefruit soda.
Nearing the end of our savoury courses, we enjoyed Atlantic Ridge kingklip with kapokbos tempura, braaied bone broth, coastal plants and daikon. The flavours conjured nostalgia, transporting us back to childhood memories.
Before the final savoury course, I was given a choice of beautifully crafted knives, each with an African hardwood handle, to use for my next dish.
The Bok Box arrived, o ering a selection of wild game: eland, springbok and ostrich. I chose the springbok loin, prepared with
a sansho crust, Ceres cherry chutney, miso onion caramel, Prenia leaf and a buchu-infused sauce. Each bite was a revelation, the rich, gamey flavour balanced by umami and sweet elements. My companion’s dish was equally exceptional; Highlands trout with dashi leeks, local miso tru e sauce and onion caramel, perfectly cooked and full of vibrant flavours.
As strawberry season was at its peak, our first dessert was a beautiful tribute to the fruit. Arranged around an amasi and rose pelargonium sherbet, it was adorned with strawberry and green tea jelly, elderflowers, a mochi veil and fresh strawberries. Just as we thought it was complete, Ryan had one more trick up his sleeve. He crushed strawberry meringue and freeze-dried strawberry right before our eyes, spooning it over everything for a final textural contrast.
When all was said and done, and we thought about which dish we liked the best and how far up our personal list of best restaurants FYN had surely secured itself to be, our final bit of food was brought to us. Bite-sized small treats, to take it easy on my waistband, were placed before us on a display platter. At FYN, it is known as Wagashi, which can be translated into English as ‘confections’. A beer and dark chocolate bonbon sat atop popped sorghum alongside a delicate rooibos sponge roll, a delightful Appletizer to ee and a pistachiostu ed choux bite. Delicious.
After every restaurant visit, my companion and I ask ourselves if we would recommend it. When it comes to FYN, I don’t know if we can recommend it enough. The service, the atmosphere and, above all, the food make this one of the best dining experiences we have ever had. And personally, I cannot wait to go again.
FYN is open for lunch and dinner. In addition to its standard full menu, it also caters to pescatarian and plant-based diets. www.fynrestaurant.com
Multidisciplinary designer Mia Widlake and her artist and adman husband Rui Alves have given an architect’s former home in Johannesburg a new lease of life.

Could Mia Widlake have discerned the hand of a kindred spirit when she first saw this “long and skinny” house in a cul-desac in her neighbourhood? Mia is known for her versatility as a designer. Under the banner of Studio 19, she has tried her hand at everything from textile, lighting and furniture design to residential, corporate and retail interiors. She’s also renowned in her home city for her eye for quirky detail and her ability to find objects with personality and integrate them into her interior designs. She seems to have an aversion to dull, formulaic spaces.
She recognised The Long House, as it has been nicknamed, where she lives with her husband, Rui Alves, and their two children, Stella and Oliver, was anything but a cookie-cutter design the minute she saw it. She instantly saw past its biscuitcoloured face-brick walls and generally dilapidated state and discerned it was something architecturally unique, with quirky details and personality to boot.
The Long House has become a living testament to how, with the right approach, you can take something distinctive and unique and make it your own without losing its essential character.
The lounge is arranged largely as it was before the alteration, although Mia reconfigured the roof beams and replaced the roof of the entire house. Many of the furniture pieces in the lounge, including the sofa, coffee table and side tables, are by Studio 19. The mid-century Spanish Chairs are by Borge Morgensen, and between them is a Cork Low Stool from Wiid Design.
The kitchen floors are tiled with slate in a herringbone pattern, which complements the monochrome surfaces and cabinets. Green courtyards on both sides beautifully hold the kitchen. The light above the kitchen island is a Harom Pendant by Studio 19. The kitchen stools are by Tolix.
Once covered in brick paving and lawn, the garden is now covered in gravel and stitched together with a lovely green-grey palette of plants. “I’m not a gardener, but I did the garden myself,” says Mia. Beautifully established yellowwood trees, along with some wild peach trees throughout, give the space a sense of structure.

We live in a world where stress levels are soaring and wellness trends can be overwhelming. Through the ups and downs, one often-overlooked nutrient is magnesium. This essential mineral plays a crucial role in numerous bodily functions, from energy production to hormonal balance, making it particularly important for women striving for optimal health. BY SHANNON SMITH
Magnesium is involved in over 300 biochemical reactions in the body, including protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function regulation, blood sugar levels and blood pressure. Unfortunately, many of us fall short of the recommended daily intake due to poor diet, high stress and increased consumption of processed foods.
As women, we face unique challenges related to hormonal health. Disturbances and fluctuations in hormones – whether from menstrual cycles, pregnancy or menopause – can lead to a host of symptoms such as mood swings, fatigue and bloating. This is where magnesium shines. It supports the production and regulation of hormones, particularly estrogen and progesterone, helping to create a sense of balance and wellbeing.
Hormonal balance Magnesium helps regulate the endocrine system, which controls hormone production. Adequate levels can alleviate symptoms of PMS, menstrual cramps and migraines, often linked with hormonal imbalances.
Stress reduction Just as magnesium helps produce hormones, it also produces neurotransmitters like serotonin, often called the ‘feel-good hormone’. This can help combat stress and anxiety, making magnesium a natural ally in the quest for emotional wellbeing.
Improved sleep Quality sleep is often sacrificed in today’s hectic lifestyles. Magnesium helps regulate sleep by promoting relaxation and reducing cortisol levels, the stress hormone that can disrupt our sleep patterns. A good night’s sleep is essential for energy and hormone regulation, creating a positive feedback loop for overall health.
Bone health Women are at a greater risk of osteoporosis postmenopause. Magnesium plays a key role in bone density by aiding calcium absorption and maintaining bone structure.
Not all magnesium supplements are created equal. Here’s a look at some common types and their specific benefits:
Magnesium citrate This form is easily absorbed by the body and can alleviate constipation. It’s a great option for those looking for a gentle digestive aid.
Magnesium glycinate Known for its calming e ects, this form is excellent for promoting relaxation and sleep, and a go-to for those experiencing anxiety or insomnia.
Magnesium oxide Though less bioavailable, it can e ectively address digestive issues and is often used in antacids.
Magnesium malate Often recommended for relieving muscle pain and fatigue, magnesium malate is ideal for active women.
Magnesium L-threonate This newer form is known for its potential cognitive benefits, including improved memory and focus.
For most women, it is best to obtain magnesium through a balanced diet. Foods rich in magnesium include leafy greens, nuts, seeds, whole grains and dark chocolate. To boost your intake, consider incorporating magnesium-rich foods into your meals or snacks, such as a spinach salad topped with walnuts or a smoothie made with banana and nut butter. It is no secret that our food is no longer as nutrient-dense as it once was. It is now almost vital to incorporate magnesium supplements into your regime, most notably as we get older.
Magnesium emerges as a vital ally in a world where stress and hormonal imbalances can dramatically a ect our wellbeing. Its myriad benefits, especially in regulating hormones, make it an essential nutrient to focus on in our daily lives. By understanding the types of magnesium available and how to incorporate them into our diets, we can empower ourselves to reclaim our health, balance our hormones and embrace a more vibrant life. Remember, just as each woman’s journey is unique, so too is her relationship with magnesium – so listen to your body and find the balance that works for you.
Shannon Smith is the founder and owner of Dacha Wellness and Bush Wellness Skincare and a passionate advocate for holistic living. Formerly a wellness coach, Shannon’s journey towards balance began after experiencing burnout, hormone imbalances and severe exhaustion. Her transition from a high-protein, exercise-heavy lifestyle to one focused on plant-based wellness and spiritual healing transformed her life. “I reached a point where I was completely burnt out – my hormones had flatlined, and my thyroid was overfunctioning. I felt like I had lost myself,” Shannon shares. She regained her health through natural supplements like magnesium and vitamin B and now dedicates herself to helping others do the same. When she is not spreading wellness, Shannon is a dog mom, a nature lover and always chasing the next waterfall.
Capetonians hankering for a country escape are spoilt for choice. Recently, I set out to explore three new finds, each just over a two-hour drive from the city or airport, but more importantly, all far enough away from the madding crowd.
BY JARED RUTTENBERG
McGregor is a village I’ve returned to repeatedly ... and for good reason. This secluded 19th-century village is one of the country’s most peaceful staycations. On several visits, I had walked past the line of newly built Lucky Crane Villas and was now finally here for a stay.
The white-washed villas couldn’t be more perfectly located: on the one side, they are flanked by the village, and on the other, the gardens spill out towards the krans-cli with Cape Fold mountains towering behind. Glancing back at the villas from the krans, they resemble a string of glistening pearls adorning the edge of the town.
The villas are designed with connection and relaxation in mind. My friends quickly slotted into go-slow mode, soaking up the poolside sunshine and later shifting to the braai and fire-warmed lounge.
Monika Schmalzl, the gracious owner, has poured years of passion into the villas, carefully crafting a comfy stay with her hospitality experience. They vary in size from cosy two-person accommodations to spacious three-bedroom options, each with its unique atmosphere. All have pools, Rock Martin sports a hot tub, and Little Swift has a sauna. Being adjacent also means they are perfect for larger gatherings of friends or family, ensuring everyone has their own space.
The beauty of McGregor is the ability to walk everywhere. When you do venture out, enjoy a wine tasting at Bemind, co ee from The Blend, and some reflection at the Temenos gardens. luckycranevillas.co.za
Half an hour away lies another exclusive stay that bridges the space between mountains and village. In Montagu, Stil is a one-bedroom designer home perched on a sizeable river-side plot. Owners Hanno and Martly Calitz talked me through their vision and the process of building Stil.
The design process was an intentional and hands-on experience for the couple and the result is a modern, minimalist-styled home that benefits from the expert touches of interior designer Hendre Bloem. An open-plan lounge, kitchen and dining space lead to the bedroom and ‘wet room’ bathroom.
In an age when bespoke design understands that one size does not fit all, Stil models what ‘attention to detail’ can look like; the vinophile-pleasing cabinet with seven di erent types of wine glasses, five gown sizes, three towel options, and a wide selection of napery allows for a di erent table setting for every meal. While the kitchen is a dream to cook, Stil has a catering service available on WhatsApp where you can order pre-cooked or ready-to-serve meals.
It’s not only the expertly designed inside spaces but also the outside ... gardens spill out onto the river, with mountains as the ever-present backdrop. Landscape enthusiasts will be excited to know that Leon Kruge – part of the team that recently brought home awards from Chelsea and Singapore –will soon be making some magic in the gardens.
The pool is heated upon arrival, meaning I could enjoy a dip on a cold winter’s day, followed by co ee on the roof terrace. What’s more, Stil serves as a gallery for renowned artist Anton Smit, with his masterpieces spread through both home and garden. Many other artists’ works are also featured, including James M & Haldane, Sam Reinders and pieces by bespoke furniture producer Haldane.
Stil is an ardent celebration of the best of South African artistry, making it, hands down, one of the most beautifully designed country escapes. If you do have others travelling, the nearby In Abundance is also owned by the Calitzes and sleeps up to 10.

My last visit was to be the most remote of all. Driving into the rugged mountainous outskirt of Montagu, Abrikoos Kloof Pod Reserve is the brainchild of Dennis Viet. As a South African residing in England, he remains firmly connected with his place of birth through this love project. Two thousand hectares of pristine wilderness is now home to a growing collection of remote pods or cabins, each allocated 300 hectares of privacy and seclusion. Since the Abrikoos Kloof story is one in the making, a new pod/ cabin is revealed every couple of months and the reserve o ers the tempting option for multiple visits.
My first two nights were in The Barn House, with its striking architecture, cleverly designed to frame the wild. High-pitched roofs give the building a cathedral-like feel, and half-level floating walls enhance the view of the abundant outdoors.
As with the other cabins on the reserve, a large reservoir-styled pool and separate hot tub were mere steps away, along with an enticing pizza oven (all ingredients can be provided on request). Continuing the nature immersion, hiking trails set out from the house into the Klein Karoo surroundings.
My last two nights were spent at Mountain House, the newest member of the Abrikoos collection. An exhilarating 20-minute climb up a mountain pass and then a drive across an elevated plain takes you to the most remote cabin I have ever stayed in, situated on an elevated cleft between folds of the Langeberg Mountains.
Mountain House has a bedroom with a doublesized tub and bathroom and a separate living area with a kitchen and lounge. A large deck connects both spaces to take in the wilderness and provides access to the hammock, pool and hot tub.
As the sun slowly stretched its rays over the fynbos in the ethereal morning light, I sat with my co ee, watching canaries take to the tops of the fynbos, composing their morning melodies. Striped field mice were scuttling about the undergrowth and a solitary duiker walked by, seemingly oblivious to my presence. With not a single soul for kilometres, I let out a long breath in the panoramic seclusion; for a golden moment, everything was right with the world. abrikooskloof.co.za

This year, beauty trends are evolving to focus on innovation, intentionality and inclusivity. From skincare to makeup and fragrance, the industry is embracing a more holistic approach to self-care. So, what’s making waves this year – and what has been left behind? BY JENNIFER CAMPBELL
Korean beauty continues to lead the industry with advanced skincare formulas, skin barrier protection and natural “glass skin” aesthetics. This year, expect a rise in multifunctional products, including jelly-textured sunscreens, probiotic-infused skincare and tone-correcting serums. The latest K-Beauty must-have? ‘Skip-care’ routines –where fewer but highly e ective ingredients replace the once 10-step regimen.
Fragrance is getting personal in 2025, with ‘purposeful perfume’ becoming a huge trend. Rather than just smelling good, scents are now designed to evoke emotions, reduce stress or boost confidence – think mood-enhancing essential oils, neuro-fragrances and aromatherapy-inspired blends. Layering perfumes is also taking over, with beauty lovers mixing di erent notes to create their own signature scent.
Retinol has reigned supreme in antiageing for years, but 2025 sees a shift towards retinal (retinaldehyde) – a more potent yet gentler alternative. Unlike retinol, which requires multiple conversion steps before becoming active, retinal is said to work much faster to boost collagen, improve skin texture and fight fine lines, all with less irritation. Expect to see retinal in a range of products, including creams, serums and night treatments.
It is no longer just about facial skincare ... 2025 is the year of neck and décolletage care. As tech devices like LED masks and microcurrent tools gain popularity, brands are rolling out specialised neck serums, retinoid-infused creams and firming treatments. With our increased screen time, targeted anti-ageing solutions for this delicate area are in high demand.
Mineral sunscreen is having a major moment and for good reason! Unlike chemical sunscreens, these formulas sit on top of your skin to physically block UV rays. Plus, they are packed with clean ingredients and are kinder to the ocean. And the best part? New lightweight, non-greasy formulas mean no more chalkylooking skin.
Overly sculpted, laminated brows take a backseat as the natural, feathery look dominates. The focus is on fuller, softer arches, which can be achieved with brow serums, precise micro feathering techniques and minimalistic styling rather than rigid lamination or overfilling.
Matte lips certainly had their time, but 2025 is bringing back hydrating satin and glossy lip finishes. Expect balmy textures infused with hyaluronic acid, peptides and nourishing oils for a soft, plump e ect.
Dewy, healthy skin is in, while thick foundation and extreme contouring are on their way out. Instead, beauty trends are embracing lightweight tinted moisturisers, natural cream blushes and radiant highlighters for an e ortless glow.
The days of complicated, lengthy routines are numbered. Consumers are opting for multi-use, high-performance products that simplify skincare without sacrificing results. Think skin-barrier-friendly formulations, hydrating serums with added SPF and microbiome-boosting ingredients.

Matcha isn’t just a pretty green powder –it’s a centuries-old tradition with serious health perks. BY JENNIFER CAMPBELL
Gather your tools A matcha bowl, bamboo whisk, sifter and high-quality matcha powder. Sift it This removes clumps for a silky-smooth texture. Add hot water You need just a small amount to start. Whisk vigorously Use a zigzag motion until a frothy layer forms. Sip and enjoy Take a moment to appreciate the vibrant colour and earthy flavour.
Unlike regular green tea, where you steep and discard the leaves, matcha is made from finely ground tea leaves, meaning you are sipping on all the goodness. Originating in Japan, it’s been a key part of tea ceremonies for centuries, but today, it has found its way into everything from lattes to smoothie bowls.
Adding matcha to your daily routine comes with some fantastic benefits.
Calm, focused energy
Thanks to L-theanine, matcha gives you a smooth energy boost without the ca eine crash.
Antioxidant powerhouse
It is packed with catechins (like EGCG) that help fight free radicals and keep your skin glowing.
Metabolism support
Some studies suggest matcha may help rev up your metabolism.
Clearer skin
Its anti-inflammatory properties can help keep breakouts at bay.
Beyond the health benefits, preparing matcha is a mindful ritual that encourages you to slow down and savour the moment.
The classic matcha latte is a favourite (and can be prepared hot or cold), but there are plenty of other ways to enjoy it. Add matcha to smoothies, overnight oats or baked goods for a healthy twist. It also works beautifully in homemade energy balls, chia pudding or even as a dusting over yoghurt and fruit. For a refreshing treat, mix it into iced lemonade or coconut water for a hydrating boost. With its naturally earthy, slightly sweet flavour, matcha is a versatile ingredient that can easily be incorporated into your daily routine.
Not all matcha is created equal! For the best experience, look for a bright green, finely ground powder that is organic and sourced from Japan. High-quality matcha should have a smooth, almost creamy texture with no visible graininess. The colour is also a key indicator; premium matcha is a vibrant, almost neon green, while lower-quality versions tend to be dull or yellowish. Always opt for ceremonialgrade matcha, as it is made from the youngest, most delicate tea leaves, ensuring a naturally sweet flavour and maximum nutritional benefits.
Ceremony South Africa, founded by Mikayla McClean, is all about making matcha more than just a drink ... it is a ritual, a moment of calm and a way to build community. Sourced from Uji, Japan, their premium matcha and beautifully crafted tea accessories easily incorporate this relaxing ritual into your daily life. The range includes ceremonial-grade matcha powder, traditional bamboo whisks and ceremony tea bowls, as well as kits that include everything you need for your very own ritual.

• 200 g smoked mackerel (or canned tuna in olive oil, the imported stu )
• 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
• zest of 1 orange
• 1 clove garlic, finely chopped
• 1 sprig fresh rosemary, leaves picked and finely chopped
• 4 ripe tomatoes, at room temperature (you can use any tomatoes, but I like heirloom)
• 2 Tbsp red wine vinegar
• sea salt and cracked black pepper to taste
• 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
• 1/4 cup pitted green manzanilla olives
• handful cherry and mixed baby exotic tomatoes
• fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves to garnish
• Maldon salt to taste
• Place the smoked mackerel in a shallow dish. In a small bowl, mix the olive oil, orange zest, garlic and rosemary, then pour this over the mackerel, turning the mackerel to ensure even coating. Cover the dish and refrigerate overnight to allow the flavours to develop.
• The next day, remove the marinated smoked mackerel from the fridge an hour before serving.
• Cut the heirloom tomatoes into chunks and marinate in a large bowl with the red wine vinegar, a 1/4 cup of the mackerel marinade, a big pinch of sea salt and some cracked black pepper.
• Place chunks of marinated smoked mackerel onto a serving platter or individual plates.
• Arrange the marinated tomato chunks inbetween the mackerel and scatter over the red onion, olives and mixed baby tomatoes.
• Garnish with fresh parsley leaves and season the salad with a sprinkling of Maldon salt and more cracked black pepper. Finish with a generous drizzle of the mackerel marinade.
A VENTRESCA SALAD TYPICALLY FEATURES CANNED TUNA IN OLIVE OIL, BUT I PREFER IT WITH SMOKED MACKEREL. FOR THIS SALAD, ENSURE YOU HAVE RIPE TOMATOES, FRESH FLAT-LEAF PARSLEY, GREEN MANZANILLA OLIVES, HIGH-QUALITY RED WINE VINEGAR AND MALDON SALT. SERVE WITH FRESH BAGUETTE.
• 400 g ground beef (80:20 meat-to-fat ratio)
• 2 hamburger buns
• 2 Tbsp butter
• tallow or sunflower oil to fry
• 1 large onion, sliced paper thin (I use a mandoline slicer)
• salt and cracked black pepper to taste
• 4 slices real cheddar or American cheese
• 1 pickle, sliced (I like Kühne pickled gherkins)
• 3 Tbsp hot-dog mustard (I like Heinz yellow mustard)
• 2 Tbsp mayonnaise or aioli (I use Aioli Handcrafted Foods roasted garlic aioli)
• 1 Tbsp tomato sauce
• 1 tsp pickle juice
• First prepare the 3-2-1 sauce by combining the mustard, mayonnaise, tomato sauce and pickle juice in a small bowl. Set aside.
• Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and form each into a ball.
• Cut and butter the hamburger buns.
• Heat a large cast-iron skillet or frying pan over medium–high heat. Place the hamburger buns on the skillet, butter-side down, and toast until golden brown. Remove and set aside.
• Wipe the skillet with paper towel and add a little tallow or sunflower oil. Place the balls of ground beef on the skillet and divide the shaved onion between them, placing the onion on top of each ball. Using a sturdy flat spatula or small pot, gently press down on each ball to smash it into a thin patty. Season with salt and black pepper. Don’t overcrowd the skillet, so if you can only do 2 balls of meat at a time, do that.
• Cook the patties for about 2 minutes until they develop a crisp, golden-brown crust, then flip them over.
• Place a slice of cheese on each patty and continue to cook for
• 1–2 minutes or until the cheese has melted.
• To assemble the burgers, spread some 3-2-1 sauce on both halves of the bun. Place 2 cheese-topped patties on each bottom bun and top with slices of pickle, then cover with the top half of the bun.
IT MUST BE AT LEAST A DOUBLE, NEVER A SINGLE! THOSE WHO KNOW ME, KNOW I’M OBSESSED WITH BURGERS! ASK YOUR BUTCHER FOR A MIX OF CHUCK AND BRISKET WITH AN 80:20 MEAT-TO-FAT RATIO, GROUND THROUGH MEDIUM GRIND, TWICE.
• 2 cups heavy cream
• 5 rooibos teabags
• 250 g castor sugar
• 75 g honey
• 1 kg good-quality cream cheese
• pinch of salt
• 5 large free-range eggs
• 30 g cake flour
METHOD
• Preheat the oven to 220 °C. Grease and line a springform cake pan with baking paper, folding the paper around the edges.
• Heat the cream in a saucepan. As it’s about to boil, take it off the heat and add the rooibos teabags. Steep for 8 minutes, then remove and discard the teabags.
• In a large bowl or stand mixer, beat the castor sugar, honey and cream cheese for about 5 minutes until smooth. Mix in the salt and then add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
• Whisk in the rooibos-infused cream.
• Sift the flour into the mixture and gently fold it in.
• Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and bake for 25 minutes until the top is browned and looks almost burnt. Then reduce the temperature to 160 °C and bake for another 15 minutes. The centre will still be a little wobbly and might look slightly runny, but the cake is ready.
• Remove from the oven and allow to cool before refrigerating overnight.
• Take the cheesecake out of the fridge 2 hours before serving. Remove the outer part of the springform pan and gently peel away the paper.
• Serve the cheesecake at room temperature, either straight up or with some fresh raspberries and drizzles of honey.

IVOR JONES HEAD CHEF AT CHEFS WAREHOUSE BEAU CONSTANTIA
South Africa’s secret weapon for wine lovers who like their whites as versatile as their playlist!
Chenin Blanc has become a flagship white grape variety for South Africa, producing some of the world’s finest examples of this versatile and expressive wine.
Originally hailing from the Loire Valley in France, Chenin Blanc found a welcoming home in South Africa’s diverse terroirs. The grape is known for its ability to adapt to a wide range of climates, from cooler coastal regions to warmer inland areas, and this adaptability has contributed to its prominence in South African viticulture.
One of the defining features of Chenin Blanc is its diversity. It is grown in nearly every wine-producing region of the country, from the cooler coastal areas of the Western Cape, such as Stellenbosch, Swartland and the Cape Peninsula, to the warmer inland regions like the Breede River Valley. This wide range of climates allows the grape to express itself in multiple ways, o ering wines that vary in sweetness, body and complexity. In the cooler regions, the grapes tend to produce fresher, more mineral-driven wines, while in the warmer regions, the wines are often richer and more fruit-forward.
The versatility of Chenin Blanc makes it a great candidate for various wine styles. You can find it made into everything from dry, crisp whites to rich, sweet dessert wines. The dry versions often feature vibrant acidity and flavours of green apple, citrus and honeyed notes, with the best examples showing complexity and depth, especially when aged. In contrast, sweet styles, such as those made from late-harvested or botrytized grapes, can display concentrated apricot, marmalade and tropical fruit flavours.
South Africa’s winemakers have embraced the potential of Chenin Blanc, pushing boundaries and exploring di erent techniques to enhance the grape’s natural qualities. Many producers in regions like Swartland have gained international recognition for crafting complex and age-worthy Chenin Blancs, often from old vines. These wines are prized for their balance, structure and ability to improve with time.
Fermenting in oak barrels is also common, imparting a subtle layer of texture and spice, adding an extra dimension to the wine’s character.
The country’s commitment to sustainable viticulture and innovative winemaking further enhances the appeal of this already impressive variety, making it one of the cornerstones of South Africa’s wine industry.
BOT RIVER
ANTHONIJ RUPERT CAPE OF GOOD HOPE VAN LILL CHENIN BLANC 2023
CITRUSDAL
This wine entices with aromas of stone fruit, quince, spice, chamomile and a hint of lemon zest. The palate is rich and engaging, with bold nectarine, apricot and mango flavours and honeyed nuances. A creamy texture and nutty finish add complexity, making it both structured and deliciously drinkable.
This wine is crafted from a careful selection of the finest fruit from our oldest vineyards at Beaumont. Fermented naturally with minimal intervention and aged primarily in used 400L French oak barrels, it offers a harmonious balance of richness, power and precision. This Western Cape white wine pairs beautifully with seafood, particularly scallops, and vibrant, spicy Asian dishes. With its vibrant freshness and structure, this South African white wine has excellent ageing potential and can be cellared until 2035.
STELLENBOSCH
This exceptional Chenin Blanc is crafted from the finest grapes, emphasising elegance and structure over overt fruitiness. It offers flavours of white peach and citrus pith, with subtle power, a mineral finish and delicate floral notes, promising excellent ageing potential. It is a wine of refinement and understated complexity.
SWARTLAND
Hand-harvested grapes were whole-bunch-pressed and oxidatively handled. After natural fermentation, minimal SO 2 was added, and the wine matured on lees for 11 months in fourth-fill French oak. Bottled unfiltered, it offers aromas of yellow orchard fruits, orange peel and a flinty note with a textured, slightly saline finish.
The AA Badenhorst Secateurs Chenin Blanc is a rich and concentrated Chenin Blanc from very old vines, un-irrigated and farmed as organically as possible. Flavours of ripe apples and honey and a creamy texture give the wine richness and weight while retaining the thrillingly zippy tang of Chenin’s acid backbone. It will cope beautifully with roast pork or roast chicken and would do a rich fish pie serious justice.
Raised on a grape farm near Rawsonville, Spier’s cellar master, Johan Jordaan, briefly considered pursuing chemical engineering. However, the irresistible scent of fermenting grapes ultimately guided his path. This month, his journey from Western Cape farm boy to globally recognised winemaker reached a new pinnacle as he was crowned Chenin Blanc Master Winemaker at the prestigious Master Winemaker 100 awards in Paris.
Johan’s new title comes as no surprise to those familiar with his skill in working with Chenin Blanc, South Africa’s flagship white grape. His expertise was recently showcased when Spier’s Good Natured Chenin Blanc 2023 and 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2022 each won gold medals at The Global Wine Masters, while Seaward Chenin Blanc 2023 earned a silver.
Now in its 12th year, the Master Winemaker 100 is one of the wine industry’s highest honours. Unlike traditional wine competitions, it involves blind judging by masters of wine, master sommeliers and senior buyers, ensuring only the wines’ quality and style are considered. To even be nominated, a winemaker must first secure Master medals in highly competitive events. Winning the coveted title of Chenin Blanc Master Winemaker places Johan among the world’s top wine producers.
“Chenin Blanc is a wine built in layers,” Johan humbly reflects. “While it’s a winemaker’s dream to work with, it also requires a hands-on approach and a deep understanding of the vineyards. This recognition reflects
our whole team – everyone, from those tending our soils to those crafting the wine in the cellar, plays a part.”
This achievement feels especially meaningful given the long history of Chenin Blanc in South Africa. First planted in the 17th century, it has become the country’s most widely cultivated grape, now comprising 18.4% of the national vineyard.
Judges were particularly impressed by the diversity of Spier’s Chenin Blancs, which showcase both complexity and approachability across various styles and price points. However, for Johan, who joined Spier in 2007 as a senior red winemaker and became cellar master in 2021, the true reward goes beyond recognition. “While awards like this are greatly appreciated, my real reward comes from knowing people are enjoying these wines at their tables, creating memories and sharing stories.”
STELLENBOSCH
Embark on a timeless journey with Methode Ancestral 2024, a sparkling masterpiece by Bruwer Vintners. Rooted in a tradition that dates back to the 15th century, this exceptional wine is crafted in the heart of Polkadraai Hills, Stellenbosch. On the nose, it reveals notes of pomegranate, fynbos and the lightest touch of brioche, followed by a delightful, mouth-filling burst of bubbles. R220 p/bottle
WESTERN CAPE
The 2021 Capensis Chardonnay reflects the Western Cape’s unique terroir, crafted from five exceptional vineyard sites. A cooler growing season yielded a smaller, high-quality crop, resulting in a wine with balance, tension and longevity. Expect aromas of white flowers, tangerine zest and fynbos, with layered stone fruits and a saline finish. R1 095 p/bottle
CITRUSDAL
This wine, from a 1965 dryland vineyard in Piekenierskloof, reflects the unique character of ancient bush vines. Unfiltered and unfined, it may form harmless crystals, signalling quality. With only 7 x 400L barrels produced, it’s a mineral-driven, textured wine with pear drop intensity, designed to age and develop complexity.
R1 845 p/bottle
OVERBERG
Bruce Jack Wines Clean Slate Shiraz, a bold wine sourced from a single 0.45-hectare vineyard in the Overberg Highlands, flourishes in slate and granitic soils at 420m altitude. Travel journalist Jared Ruttenberg was invited to Thailand to celebrate a momentous change in legislation and sun soak on White Lotus Season 3’s dreamy island.
BY JARED RUTTENBERG
In January, Thailand made headlines as the first Southeast Asian country to pass laws allowing marriage irrespective of gender. This marks an unabashed celebration of the right to love whomever one chooses and formalises that ceremoniously and legally.
Since the recent announcement, two thousand couples have registered to tie the knot. This also furthers Thailand’s longstanding welcome to the world’s LGBTQ+ community – prepare for some exciting destination weddings.
Alongside media from around the globe, I accepted the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s invitation to celebrate a visual feast at the W Bangkok, featuring a stirring address from the Governor of Tourism, Thapanee Kiatphaibool, herself.
The city bustles e ortlessly, exuding an almost dizzying excitement. Modern Bangkok sprawls, with glass skyscrapers reaching into the sky in every direction.
Since our itinerary included this celebratory stopover, the W Bangkok was the obvious choice for accommodation. Since 1998, W Hotels has been redefining norms and creating spaces that championed inclusivity. There’s a contagious playfulness throughout, From communal areas and rooms with chic city views to vibrant dining options.
Adjacent to the hotel is Sky Beach Bangkok – the city’s highest bar. At a staggering height of 250m from the 64th floor, the skyline is invigorating – no wonder that one night in Bangkok and the world’s your oyster.
At 229 square kilometres, the island is half the size of its popular sister, Phuket. With the recent release of White Lotus Season 3, filmed on the island, visitors are guaranteed to seek out the tropical paradise they’ve seen on screen.
Alighting the aircraft, we met the delightful Pong Srikhaisorn, a guide in the region for three decades. Very eager to show us the island, we set o , and thankfully, for a hungry traveller, our first stop was a cooking class.
Chef Keng welcomed us at a market where we were introduced to a range of local ingredients. Go Cook Samui o ers a truly authentic experience as Keng teaches recipes his family has cherished for years. Your culinary e orts are, of course, rewarded by savouring your freshly made meals.
From cooking for humans to cooking for elephants! Elephant Kingdom Sanctuary stands apart from most similar experiences: here, elephants are revered and not exploited at Koh Samui’s only locally owned ethical sanctuary. The rescued pachyderms come from across the country and now roam freely in a protected and rehabilitative environment. From elevated walkways, they can be safely observed – and if you wish, you can prepare a nutrient ‘power ball’ to feed them.
Needing some downtime, the W Koh Samui is one of the island’s highest-rated hotels - and upon arrival, it’s clear why. The sprawling resort begins at the beach and ascends the lush hillside, culminating in a pool terrace that’s oh-so-Instagrammable.
The accommodations range from Oasis resort rooms to freestanding villas; impressively, every room features a private pool.
Unmissable is the AWAY Spa, the largest I’ve visited. It has dreamy solo and couples’ rooms nestled in the forest, as well as the signature Japanese Namu Restaurant.
Refreshed, I took a short break from the beach to explore the island’s dense forest, particularly the dual Na Muang. The lower waterfall is directly adjacent to the car park, while the higher one requires an easy 30-minute hike. At 80 metres each, they are natural sights to behold, and thankfully, refreshing swims are permitted at both.
Sticking to the forest theme, Pong led us to our final resort – the luxury Vana Belle (vana being Thai for ‘forest’ and belle French for ‘beautiful’). Elegantly raised wooden structures capped with scarlettiled pitched roofs, the Vana Belle is a secluded oasis in the forest. Sitting in the reception, which seemed to float in the forest, the sounds of water replaced music and under the traditional pagodas, the sense was total seclusion from the island’s busyness.
A last-minute upgrade to a beachfront villa was the cherry on top (it does pay to be a Marriott Bonvoy member). From the master bed, loungers and wrap-around pool, we could endlessly gaze out at the coral-coloured water.
Having seen floating breakfasts on social media, I wondered if they were gimmicks or genuine. Taking the plunge, my friend and I ordered one. The experience? Irrevocably unforgettable. The tray laden with tasty choices floated comfortably on the water, allowing us to stand and eat or use the pool’s built-in chairs. Champagne in hand and a postcard beach before us, this was tantalising Thailand at its best.

The elegant and minimalist Library Hotel follows a literary theme. Start with a cocktail on the beachfront deck, then head indoors for the four-course tasting menu in the gorgeous dining room.
The vibey Coco's Tam offers elevated restaurant seating or rows of beach beanbags. At night, the moon rises ahead while fire poi dancers offer thrilling light shows.
This is 'the' place to be seen: free-flowing drinks, bodies pulsating to the thumping music, and beach club vibes around the pool. Monthly parties add to the fun; during the day, it is slightly more chilled, and in the evenings, a full party scene.
Koh Samui is also home to 12 Michelin-recommended restaurants and Kapi Sator was our choice as an unassuming. The eatery carries a Gourmand bib award for affordable dining, meaning you will dine with locals.
The location of Pi could not be more enviable: beachside, where a shallow sandbar links the adjacent Ko Fan Island. Dine directly on the beach, in the shade of the circular building or in the rattan cabins on the top story.
How the Isuzu D-Max 3.0 LSE 4x4 holds up after 12 months. BY VANN VAN STADEN
Over the past year, the Isuzu D-Max 3.0 LSE 4x4 has seamlessly integrated into our lifestyle, proving itself as more than just a workhorse. Clocking over 10 000 km while in our hands, this bakkie has been a steadfast companion on urban commutes, scenic drives along the Cape Town coastline, and long-haul road trips between Cape Town and Johannesburg.
From the moment we slid into the driver’s seat, the D-Max exuded rugged sophistication. The interior, a blend of hard-wearing materials and thoughtful design, o ered comfort during daily commutes. The cabin’s layout was intuitive, with physical buttons and straightforward ergonomics, making navigating the infotainment system and climate controls easy.
The vehicle’s dimensions struck a perfect balance; its size was substantial enough to command presence on the road yet compact enough to manoeuvre through Cape Town’s bustling streets. Often a challenge in urban settings, the vehicle’s design and the assistance of parking sensors made parking much easier.
One of the highlights of owning the D-Max was the freedom to explore the picturesque Cape Town coastline. Weekends were often spent driving along Chapman’s Peak Drive, where the vehicle’s handling and stability were put to the test against sharp bends and coastal winds. The 3.0L turbo-diesel engine, producing 140 kW at 3 600 rpm and 450 Nm of torque between 1 600 and 2 600 rpm, provided ample power, making overtaking and merging onto highways e ortless.
The spacious load bed proved invaluable for spontaneous beach trips. With sur oards securely strapped down, the D-Max accommodated all the necessary gear without compromising passenger comfort. The high ground clearance and robust suspension ensured a smooth ride, even on uneven coastal paths leading to secluded beaches.
The true test of the D-Max’s capabilities came during a road trip from Cape Town to Johannesburg. Covering approximately 1 400 km, the journey traversed diverse terrains, from flat highways to mountainous regions. The vehicle’s fuel e ciency was a pleasant surprise; maintaining a 100 km/h speed, the D-Max averaged a consumption of 5.1 litres/100 km, highlighting its economical nature.
On the open road, cruising at 120 km/h felt stable and composed. The adaptive cruise control system maintained a consistent speed, reducing fatigue during long stretches. Rest stops were frequent, not out of necessity but to admire the changing landscapes; from the arid Karoo to the lush greenery as we approached Gauteng.
Back in the city, the D-Max continued to impress. The cabin’s noise insulation ensured conversations remained uninterrupted, even at highway speeds. The air-conditioning system was e cient, quickly cooling the cabin during the hot summer months.
The rear seats, often a concern in double-cab bakkies, o ered ample legroom and comfort. Family visits and outings were enjoyable, with everyone appreciating the spaciousness and amenities. The 995 kg payload capacity and 3 500 kg towing capacity were more than su cient for our occasional trips to the local hardware store or towing a small trailer, underscoring the vehicle’s versatility.
While the D-Max predominantly served urban and highway duties, its o -road prowess was undeniable. A weekend trip to the Cederberg region saw us quickly navigating rocky terrains and river crossings. Engaging the 4x4 system was intuitive, and the electronic rear di erential lock provided added confidence on slippery surfaces. The vehicle’s wading depth of 800 mm allowed for safe passage through water crossings, a feature that became particularly useful during the rainy season.
Over the year, the D-Max required minimal maintenance. Routine services were straightforward, and the availability of parts ensured any minor issues were promptly addressed. The vehicle’s build quality was evident, with no rattles or squeaks developing over time. Its reliability became a cornerstone of our daily lives, with each journey reinforcing our trust in its capabilities.
The Isuzu D-Max 3.0 LSE 4x4 has proven to be more than just a utilitarian vehicle; it has become an integral part of our lifestyle. Its blend of comfort, e ciency and ruggedness makes it suitable for both urban living and adventurous explorations. Whether navigating city streets, cruising along the coast, embarking on long-distance road trips or venturing o the beaten path, the D-Max has consistently exceeded expectations, solidifying its place as a true companion for the modern South African family.

"Alright, I'll admit it – I am a bakkie kinda girl, but I have always seen it for that, a bakkie. But the D-Max and living with it for a year gave me a new outlook. It blends the rugged outdoors with city living like a pro. I've had it loaded up with all my gear for camping trips, and let's not forget the dogs – they absolutely loved the space in the back! It's the perfect balance of 'let's conquer the wild' and 'let's cruise to brunch'. It's a beast when you need it, but also surprisingly comfy for the daily grind. And the dogs? They can't get enough of it! It will be missed, but every time I drive past one in traffic now, I am reminded of our amazing time with it."
ASPIRE GROUP EDITOR
"I must admit, I never anticipated falling head over heels for a bakkie, but the D-Max has utterly captivated me. It strikes the perfect balance between rugged strength and refined practicality – if you catch my drift. The D-Max demands a presence on the road; in fact, my friends now say a bakkie suits me more than any other category… that was a surprise for me! The interior is comfortable and I didn't find it lacking in anything. Undoubtedly, it was the ultimate road companion for me and my boys (my two dogs, Harry and George), and I can honestly say that I'll miss its presence in size in my garage and in stature on the road."
