NEW NAME, SAME GREAT CARE
With a new name and deeper connections to MemorialCare, MemorialCare Independent Physicians offers seniors seamless, coordinated care — just in time for Medicare Open Enrollment and beyond.
Behnaz Motlagh, M.D., family medicine, MemorialCare Independent Physicians, Health Solution Medical
Continuity of care is crucial for older adults, particularly those managing chronic conditions or reviewing their coverage during Medicare Open Enrollment, which takes place from October 15 to December 7. This is a critical time to ensure your healthcare providers and services continue to align with your evolving needs.
With the transition from Greater Newport Physicians to MemorialCare Independent Physicians, some patients have asked what’s different. The answer: while the name is new, the care remains the same, delivered by the same trusted doctors and care teams. What has improved is how that care is delivered: it is now more coordinated, connected, and comprehensive.
MemorialCare Independent Physicians remains rooted in the same values that built Greater Newport Physicians
in 1985, when a group of 50 private-practice doctors came together to improve the delivery of care in the community. Today, we’ve grown to nearly 1,000 primary care and specialty providers serving patients across Orange and Los Angeles counties, including right here in South Orange County.
In South Orange County, where nearly one in five residents is aged 65 or older, healthcare decisions often involve multiple specialists, medications, and screenings. That’s where our integration with the MemorialCare Health System becomes a major benefit. With access to top-rated hospitals like Saddleback Medical Center — recognized as an Age-Friendly Health System and known for its specialized services for older adults — our patients benefit from care that’s not only expert but also tailored to the needs of seniors.
Combined with a vast network of in-network specialists, this ensures that patients experience truly seamless, coordinated care, from preventive visits to complex treatment plans. I care for many seniors with a variety of health needs. From managing ongoing conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes to supporting preventive care and wellness, my focus is on helping older adults stay healthy, active, and independent.
I also guide patients through important aspects of aging, such as coordinating with specialists, reviewing medications, and planning for long-term health goals. No matter where you are in your health journey, having a trusted physician by your side makes all the difference.
This is especially important during the Medicare Open Enrollment period. Choosing a Medicare Advantage plan that includes MemorialCare Independent Physicians means you’re choosing a network that understands how to care

YEAR-END TAX PLANNING OPPORTUNITIES & STRATEGIES
INDIVIDUALS:
1. Consider a Roth IRA conversion to take advantage of lower tax brackets and the expanded State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction under the new Trump tax law (from $10,000 to $40,000 based on income). This may result in $30,000 less taxable income in 2025—perfect for converting more to Roth. If you’re on Medicare, be mindful of IRMAA income thresholds—larger conversions may increase future Medicare premiums
2. Make non-taxable gifts of up to $19,000 per recipient under the annual gift tax exclusion.
3. For individuals aged 70½ or older, consider making Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) from pretax IRAs to reduce taxable income. Especially helpful if you’re taking the Standard Deduction and not itemizing. Lower AGI may also reduce taxation on Social Security and Medicare premiums. Let your parents or grandparents know!
4. Accelerate charitable giving in 2025. Starting in 2026, the new law reduces your itemized charitable deduction by 0.5% of AGI before any donations apply. We can help you establish your own self-directed Donor Advised Fund so you can deduct a large contribution in 2025, while maintaining flexibility to give over future years. Also consider donating appreciated stock instead of cash—you’ll receive a full fair market value deduction and avoid capital gains taxes
5. Surviving spouses whose spouse passed within the last five (5) years should evaluate filing Form 706 (Estate Tax Return) to elect portability and preserve the deceased
spouse’s unused exemption. This is especially important since the estate tax exemption will drop to $15 million in January 2026
6. For worthless or abandoned partnership interests, take affirmative steps to terminate ownership and claim a capital loss on your tax return.
7. For high-income taxpayers, consider an Oil and Gas Drilling Program to generate large ordinary deductions through Intangible Drilling Costs (IDCs) These deductions can be used to offset ordinary income – including W-2 wages – making them especially valuable for salaried earners seeking tax relief.
BUSINESSES:
1. If you’re a sole proprietor or an LLC, consider forming an S Corporation to reduce self-employment taxes and gain legal liability protection. This is especially relevant with the Social Security wage base increasing to $184,500 which is taxed at 15.3% for the S-E Tax
2. For S Corporations, LLCs, and Partnerships, take advantage of the Pass-Through Entity Tax (PTET) election. By having the business pay your California personal income tax, the shareholder receives a federal deduction—potentially saving up to 37% of the amount paid.
3. Review your retirement plan to determine the best option based on your income, contribution goals, and staff needs. The most relevant plans include 401(k), Defined Benefit, and SIMPLE IRA plans. In 2025, a solo 401(k)/ Profit Sharing participant aged 50+ can contribute up to $77,500 (up to $81,250 for ages 60–63).

Is It Time For Assisted Living? What to Notice During the Holidays
By Jay Minor
The holidays often bring families together and sometimes those moments of togetherness reveal subtle (or not so subtle!) changes in the people we love.
If you find yourself wondering whether your parent or spouse is still safe and thriving at home, you’re not alone. Many families begin to recognize the signs during the holidays that it may be time to start exploring assisted living or memory care options.
Signs It May Be Time for More Support
1. Changes in personal hygiene or appearance. Notice if clothes are unwashed, grooming habits have slipped, or there’s an unusual body odor.
2. Unpaid bills or unopened mail. These may point to trouble managing daily responsibilities or finances.
3. Weight loss or an empty refrigerator. Forgetting meals or losing interest in cooking can indicate declining memory or motivation.
4. Increased confusion or forgetfulness. Repeating stories, missing appointments, or forgetting familiar names and routines may signal cognitive decline.
5. Mobility or balance issues. Frequent falls, unsteady walking, or difficulty getting up from a chair can increase safety risks.
6. Withdrawal or mood changes. If your loved one seems anxious, irritable, or unusually quiet, it could be depression or social isolation.
7. Household neglect. Clutter, dirty dishes, or an unkempt home may reflect difficulty keeping up with daily living tasks.
8. Caregiver burnout. For spouses caring for a partner, exhaustion or health decline in the caregiver is an important warning sign too.
Questions to Ask Yourself (and Your Loved One)
1. Is your loved one safe living alone day to day?
2. Are medications being taken consistently and correctly?
3. Is driving still safe? Or have there been close calls?
4. Would an emergency (like a fall) be handled quickly if it happened?
5. Is loneliness or isolation taking a toll on their emotional health?
6. Are you, as a family member, losing sleep or peace of mind worrying about them?
7. Would some extra help (meals, housekeeping, or personal care) make life easier or more joyful for them?
These questions aren’t about taking away independence. They’re about preserving dignity, safety, and quality of life.
You Don’t Have to Figure It Out Alone
The process of finding the right assisted living or memory care option can feel overwhelming. That’s where I can help. As a Certified Senior Advisor® and local owner of Assisted Living Locators – South Orange County, I work alongside families at no cost to you to understand your loved one’s needs, tour appropriate communities, and make confident, informed decisions.
If your holiday visit leaves you concerned or uncertain, consider that an opportunity rather than a crisis. This is often the moment when awareness begins, and that awareness gives you time. Time to ex-
plore, to have gentle conversations, and to plan thoughtfully rather than react urgently.
Recognizing changes early allows you to look into options while your loved one can still be part of the decision-making process. It means you can tour communities together, ask questions, and find the right fit without the stress of a hospital discharge or emergency move.
Taking action now doesn’t mean you’re rushing a decision. It means you’re being proactive, loving, and wise. By starting the conversation during the holidays, you can turn a moment of concern into the beginning of a well-supported plan for the future.

Innovative Post-Hospital Care at The Covington, an ECS Retirement Community in Aliso Viejo
Hospital care has evolved dramatically in the past 30 years, but until recently, post-hospital care had remained the same.
A generation ago, people would be discharged from a long stay in the hospital and be sent to a skilled nursing facility where the average stay was 30 days.
These locations could feel institutional and impersonal in their care, and those recovering would often share rooms with strangers.
“This model was driven by the Medicare reimbursement program,” says Krista Nay, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Episcopal Communities and Services (ECS).
Procedures, such as hip or knee replacements are not as invasive as they used to be, so residents may be released from the hospital after just two or three days. While most would rather be in fa-
miliar surroundings, their spouse or partner may not be capable of providing them with the support they need. Simply put, they aren’t ready to go home just yet.
One of the first multi-level care communities in California to adopt a new model of post-hospital care is The Covington, an ECS retirement community in Aliso Viejo.
“We are thrilled to be ahead of the curve,” says Cash Benton, Executive Director of The Covington. In April 2023, The Covington proudly opened five Care Suites. These customized suites offer 24hour nursing care and recovery care to residents returning from a stay in the hospital.
“We knew there was a need for short-term, round-the-clock access to support,” Cash says, “so we designed the Care Suites, specifically for those needing a place to recover before returning to their Covington homes.”
The Suites have a range of exceptional features. The beds can be adjusted to any height, and have specially selected, hypoallergenic mattresses designed for those who might be spending more time in bed. The bathrooms are freshly updated with extra-wide shower entrances. The living areas can accommodate both Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy sessions and have a lift chair for ease of use.
To allow for welcoming friends and family, there is a microwave, a full set of dishes and a fridge stocked with snacks. The in-suite dining room table allows residents to eat in their room if they choose, or they can dine with other residents in one of The Covington’s three restaurants. The 60inch TVs allow residents to watch their favorite shows, follow exercise programs, communicate with family and more. “The suites are designed so residents can rehabilitate and recover in comfort,” Krista says.
In addition to the thoughtful amenities, each resident in a Care Suite has access to nursing care if and when needed and has a dedicated Team Member available at all hours. A nurse practitioner admits the resident to the Care Suite and follows up throughout their stay, so residents and their family are assured their care is consistent and monitored.
These new Care Suites are located in the same building as The Covington’s Assisted Living homes and are available to any resident
of The Covington, with a minimum stay of five days. “We’ve adapted to what people want, and their expectations,” Krista says.
Licensed and certified therapists and medical personnel deliver comprehensive care for both short and long-term stays. With these Care Suites, residents get the support they need to return home as soon as possible.
When the resident is cleared to return home, individual treatment plans are customized to both abilities and goals. “A personalized Care Plan may last for a few months, or it could be a lifelong plan,” Cash says. Once the resident returns to their Covington home, they have access to oneon-one nursing care, or floor nursing, where visits are scheduled throughout the day to support the individual’s needs.
The Care Suite model means the person is now home, at The Covington, surrounded by friends and family, and is getting the additional support they need, tailored to their situation. There is also
one point of contact for ongoing care, so they and their loved ones have the confidence and peace of mind that comes from professional, individualized attention and monitoring.
LifeLine magazine called The Covington’s approach “forwardthinking.” They added that “What Episcopal Communities and Services… is initiating at its Covington community is a good example of what such a new approach could look like.”
“We have done surveys with our residents who have stayed in our Care Suites,” Cash says. “We have

• Physician care, if needed
• Physical, occupational and speech therapy
• Laboratory services
• Radiology services

had great feedback. Our residents appreciate the level of comfort and support they receive.”
Karen Mauro experienced the Care Suites first-hand, when her friend Jim Espinosa returned to The Covington from the hospital, following a procedure. “The experience has been great,” Karen says. “Jim has recuperated so well.” She noted how seamless the transition was in the Care Suites.
“There were so many thoughtful touches,” she says. “All his clothes were in the Care Suite waiting for him.” The long tenure of the Team Members at The Covington supports the transition as well. “And all the staff are so wonderful. They know everyone’s name.”
Karen was struck by the warm, caring environment. “The atmosphere and quality of care give me such a sense of confidence. I’m thrilled that when I think about my future life, should I need it, the Care Suites are available for me,” she says.
These customized Care Suites offer 24-hour nursing care and recovery care for residents returning from the hospital.
“I’ve received calls from other facilities in the country,” Cash says.
“They are interested in what we did and how we did it.”
The Covington offers a warm welcome to individuals and couples from all backgrounds, cultures, and faiths. Set on 12 leafy acres, with luxury amenities like a heated indoor pool, personalized healthand-wellness plans, koi pond, lush gardens and three dining venues to choose from, The Covington deliver the choice, freedom, and flexibility all seniors deserve. Align Wealth Advisors
A High-Touch, Values-Driven Approach to True Wealth
By Jody Robinson
In today’s rapidly shifting financial landscape, it’s easy for investors to feel overwhelmed – by headlines, by market noise, and by the pressure to make the “right” decisions. But at Align Wealth Advisors, true wealth isn’t defined by market swings or account balances. It’s defined by clarity, purpose, and the confidence that your finances support the life you want to live.
For President & CEO Nicholas Yrizarry, who has spent 37 years in the financial services industry, building that kind of confidence is both a passion and a philosophy by specializing in “total comprehensive wealth management – which includes financial planning, investment planning, estate planning and lifestyle planning. But what truly sets his firm apart is something far more foundational: a deep commitment to behavioral finance.
“Align Wealth Advisors was founded on the fundamentals of behavioral finance,” says Yrizarry. “Personal finance has long lacked the ‘personal’ part. We begin by focusing on the individual in finance by taking clients through a values-centered planning exercise to determine what should be
Yrizarry, President & CEO
at the forefront of the financial planning process.”
This values-centered approach –rare in traditional financial planning – helps clients identify what matters most: family, independence, flexibility, service, environment, faith, or other guiding philosophies. By anchoring financial decisions in these deeply personal priorities, Align Wealth Advisors helps clients avoid emotional pitfalls, remain steady during volatility, and make decisions aligned with their long-term vision.
Through this reflective process, the firm crafts purpose-driven, comprehensive financial plans designed not only to grow and preserve wealth, but also to withstand economic “what ifs” throughout retirement. “Ultimately, what we’re delivering to our clients is preparedness,” says Yrizarry. “We want our clients to know that no matter what life throws their way, their financial plan is designed to stay the course. And we’ll be there every step of the way.”
Yrizarry’s path to this holistic model began with an academic foundation in psychology at Princeton University, followed by advanced training in finance. His education – combined with decades of real-world experi-
ence – revealed a crucial truth: many clients were being underserved by large institutions.
After seeing how clients were underserved by the bigger firms, Align’s unique family office model was conceived, delivering an elevated experience to individuals and families seeking a hands-on, high-touch relationship with their financial team.
The firm proactively manages and coordinates every major aspect of one’s financial world, including investment management, estate strategies, retirement planning, tax planning, longterm care, insurance, philanthropic planning, college funding, and business-owner planning. With a boutique agency structure, the team is able to communicate regularly, respond quickly, and build the kind of trust that transforms the advisor-client relationship into a genuine partnership.
Beyond his work with clients, Yrizarry is widely recognized as a thought leader. His insights on market behavior and investor psychology have been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, MSNBC.com, Fox News, ABC News, Bankrate.com, and he has appeared on CNBC. Yet despite national recognition, Yrizarry remains deeply committed to the personal, tailored service that defines the Align Wealth Advisors experience.
At its core, Align Wealth Advisors helps clients unite their finances with their personal values – creating what Yrizarry refers to as TRUE WEALTH: a life where money supports purpose, decisions align with values, and confidence replaces uncertainty.
It’s more than wealth management. It’s life management – with clarity, intention, and unwavering support at every step.

HOME CARE WITH HEART
Finding the right care for your loved one can feel daunting, but you don’t have to do it alone. Since 2012, we’ve been helping seniors in Laguna Woods Village and the surrounding areas to stay safe, happy, and independent in the comfort of their own homes.
We truly believe that a senior’s quality of life is enhanced when they are surrounded by people who genuinely care about their well-being. Our goal is to ensure that your loved one feels safe, supported, and loved, all while allowing them to remain in the comfort of their own home.
We recently spoke with Segal Ronen, the President of Your Home Care and an expert in the field, to learn more about the vital services they provide and the many benefits of home care.

A Community of Care: Cristina Allen’s Holistic Vision for Hospice in Orange County
By Jody Robinson
When most people hear the word hospice, they think of medical care in life’s final stages.
But for Cristina Allen, founder of Community Care Hospice Orange County, hospice is something deeper, richer, and far more expansive: it’s about honoring the entire journey of each patient while creating a true community of compassion that embraces families, caregivers, veterans, students, and neighbors alike.
Cristina’s approach challenges the traditional idea of hospice as a clinical service. Instead, she sees it as an opportunity to build connections— between patients and their loved ones, between volunteers and veterans, between students and mentors, and even between seniors and a four-legged visitor named Enzo, her beloved dog who has become a star in his own right at memory care centers and board-and-care facilities. Together, Cristina and her team are transforming the face of end-of-life care in Orange County with a mission rooted in empathy, presence, and holistic healing.
BUILDING A “COMMUNITY OF CARE”
Cristina’s inspiration for founding Community Care Hospice OC grew out of her conviction that patients and families deserve more than a “cookie-cutter” approach. “My dream,” she explains, “was to offer greater resources that expand to assemble a true community of care. Hospice, at its heart, is about valuing every person’s sacred journey with tranquility and empathy. But it also means reaching outward: supporting the families,
caregivers, and loved ones who walk alongside our patients.”
That vision has shaped the organization into something unique in the region. Beyond the traditional medical services of pain management and symptom control, Community Care Hospice OC integrates emotional, spiritual, and social support into every plan of care. Each family receives a personalized program designed by a multidisciplinary team—nurses, physicians, social workers, chaplains, and trained volunteers—ensuring that the approach is never one-size-fits-all. Holistic therapies are also offered at no cost, giving patients and their loved ones comfort that extends beyond medicine. “We care for the whole person—spiritually, emotionally, socially, and medically,” she says. “End-of-life care is far more than simply managing physical pain; it is about healing hearts, deepening connections, and creating lasting moments of profound meaning.”
REACHING INTO THE COMMUNITY
One of the most distinctive hallmarks of Community Care Hospice OC is its commitment to community engagement. Cristina and her team regularly participate in events like the Veteran Stand Down, offering services, resources, and companionship to local veterans. They also host gatherings ranging from block parties to wellness screenings that include free blood pressure checks, turning what could
be simple outreach into opportunities for building meaningful connections across neighborhoods and generations.
For Cristina, these efforts aren’t just goodwill—they are essential. “We want to be present not just at the bedside, but in the community itself,” she explains. “It’s about creating bridges, fostering trust, and making sure that people know we are here as neighbors, not just as providers.”
That sense of partnership extends to local institutions as well. Community Care Hospice OC collaborates with colleges, including UC Irvine’s Public Health undergraduate and graduate programs, offering students internships that provide hands-on experience in compassionate care. Watching these students grow in skill and empathy is deeply rewarding for Cristina and her staff. In addition, chaplain interns extend spiritual support not only within board-and-care facilities and hospitals, but also to police departments, veterans’ groups, and
other organizations. This kind of outreach creates safe spaces for conversations that might otherwise remain unspoken—especially for veterans, many of whom carry long-silent stories.
ENZO: THE FOUR-LEGGED VOLUNTEER
Perhaps no ambassador embodies the spirit of Community Care Hospice OC more than Enzo, Cristina’s loyal dog. Enzo regularly visits senior memory centers and board-and-care facilities, where his wagging tail and gentle presence light up the faces of those he meets. For seniors living with dementia or Alzheimer’s, the simple joy of stroking Enzo’s fur or receiving his unconditional affection can stir memories, soothe agitation, and bring moments of peace.
“He has this way of opening hearts instantly,” Cristina shares. “Patients who may be withdrawn or struggling to connect often brighten when Enzo
walks in. He gives comfort in ways that words cannot.”
Enzo’s visits reflect the hospice’s holistic philosophy: healing is not only medical, but emotional and spiritual. Just as the team offers complementary therapies and personalized care, Enzo offers the kind of companionship that reminds patients they are still part of a community that values and cherishes them.
RAISING THE BAR FOR HOSPICE CARE
Under Cristina’s leadership, Community Care Hospice OC has established itself as a pioneer in reimagining hospice as a ministry of the heart. Her team’s work is about more than just providing services—it’s about leaving a legacy of love for each patient and their family.
She puts it simply: “With each patient we serve, each family we comfort, and each veteran or neighbor we engage,
End-of-life care is far more than simply managing physical pain; it is about healing hearts, deepening connections, and creating lasting moments of profound meaning.
we are not simply providing hospice care. We are building a community of compassion, one life at a time.”
In a healthcare landscape that often feels rushed, transactional, or impersonal, Cristina’s vision stands as a reminder of what true caregiving can look like. It is personal. It is holistic. It is deeply human. And whether through the hands of a compassionate nurse, the attentive ear of a chaplain, the mentorship of a student intern, or the joyful presence of Enzo, it is care that speaks to the soul.
A LEGACY OF LOVE
For families navigating the uncertainty of end-of-life, Community Care Hospice OC offers not just comfort, but hope—hope for meaningful moments, for deeper connections, and for journeys guided by compassion rather than fear. Cristina’s passion has created more than an agency; it has created a living, breathing network of people, programs, and even pets, all bound by a shared commitment to serve.
At the heart of it all is a simple but profound truth: hospice is not about endings. In Cristina Allen’s hands, it is about community, presence, and love that endures beyond a lifetime.

There
are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.
ACTINIC KERATOSIS
An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered precancerous because, if left alone, it could develop into skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed to the sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.
SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly, and some forms are tender to the touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.
BASAL CELL CARCINOMA
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.
MELANOMA
Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. It is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year, and it is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.
WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW
1. Everyone needs to perform a selfskin exam once a month.
2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms, soles, under your nails, and places most have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check—it could save your life.
3. What to look for: ABCDEs and the Ugly Duckling
A - Asymmetry: If you draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?
B - Border: Is there a nice, crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?
C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?
D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6 mm, i.e., the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.
E - Evolution: Has it changed?
F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?
4. Everyone needs a full-body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.
Caring with Heart: How Home Helpers of Orange Coast Brings Compassion and Expertise Home
By Jody Robinson
For many families, finding the right in-home care solution for a loved one can feel overwhelming—a maze of questions, emotions, and uncertainty. But for Dwight Brown, owner of Home Helpers of Orange Coast, providing clarity, compassion, and care is not just a business—it’s a calling.
Home Helpers has been a trusted name in in-home caregiving nationwide for more than 25 years, with Dwight’s locally owned and operated Orange County office serving the community for the past 15. Under his leadership, the agency has earned a reputation for its personalized approach, deep expertise, and heartfelt dedication to helping families navigate every stage of the caregiving journey.
“What really sets us apart,” Dwight shares, “is the combination of ex-
perience, compassion, and customer service that drives everything we do.”
That commitment begins with his team. Home Helpers of Orange Coast boasts one of the largest caregiver networks in the region, allowing Dwight and his staff to make thoughtful matches between clients and caregivers—pairings that feel more like family than formal arrangements. “Every person has unique needs, personalities, and preferences,” Dwight explains. “Having a large, diverse team gives us the flexibility to find that perfect fit.”
tor, working with respected organizations like CareMore and SCAN Health Plan—companies known for their innovative approach to senior wellness. “Both were amazing places that taught me the importance of outcomes and the value of compassion in healthcare,” he recalls. “But what I saw was a huge gap. Seniors wanted to stay at home as they aged, yet there weren’t enough resources—or enough people—ready to guide families through their options.”
That realization inspired Dwight to start Home Helpers of Orange Coast. His goal: to build a home care agency grounded in service, empathy, and genuine human connection. “We approach caregiving as a customer service endeavor,” he says. “It’s not just about providing care—it’s about making people feel safe, supported, and happy.”
Beyond the personal touch, Home Helpers stands out for its seasoned experience in handling the complexities that often come with caregiving. From coordinating with insurance companies and the helping veterans get caregiving through the VA to assisting fiduciaries and extended families, Dwight’s team brings a level of professionalism and understanding that only comes with years in the field. “We’ve seen every type of care imaginable,” he says. “And because of that, we know how to make the process easier for everyone involved.”
Dwight’s journey into senior care began years ago in the healthcare sec-
It’s this philosophy that keeps Dwight personally involved in every aspect of the business—even answering calls from families who simply need advice. “About 75 percent of my calls are from people just looking for information,” he says with a smile. “I had one conversation where I explained VA caregiving benefits to a daughter caring for her father. When she realized he might qualify for full coverage, she said, ‘I wish I’d called you two years ago.’ Moments like that remind me why I do this.”
For Dwight Brown, Home Helpers isn’t just about in-home care—it’s about community care. It’s about showing up with heart, experience, and the promise that no family has to navigate this journey alone.

A Fresh Perspective on Mental Wellness at
In a time when conversations around mental health are more vital than ever, Ocean View Adult Psychiatric Health Facility has become a trusted sanctuary for Southern California residents seeking compassionate, personalized care.
Since opening its doors in 2012, Ocean View has specialized in stabilizing acute psychiatric symptoms for adults 18 and older—placing choice, privacy, and heartfelt care at the center of everything they do. With 40 voluntary beds—most in private rooms—patients are empowered to begin their healing journey on their own terms.
“What really sets us apart is the compassion our team brings to every interaction,” shares Carla DiCandia, MPA. “Time and again, our patients tell us,
‘I actually feel cared for.’ That, to me, is the highest compliment we could receive.”
At Ocean View, the focus is on identifying and treating symptoms such as depression, anxiety, mania, delusions, and suicidal ideation before they become more severe. The average stay of seven to 14 days allows patients to decompress, regain confidence, and work daily with a psychiatrist, internist, and social worker—ensuring true, holistic care.
connecting with a therapist, or building new support.”
Ocean View continues to grow, with plans to add 40 secure-care beds and launch a Forensic Mental Health Rehabilitation Center—the first of its kind locally—serving justice-involved individuals in need of structured recovery. Additional new facilities in Colton will extend care to both adolescents and adults.
From partnering with Saddleback MemorialCare to host mental wellness classes for seniors to providing Medicare-covered care for older adults, Ocean View stands as a beacon of hope. “With the right care,” says Carla, “everyone deserves the chance to live at their full potential.”
“No one ever leaves us without a plan,” Carla emphasizes. “We make sure every patient has real next steps—whether it’s returning to a trusted program,

At the heart of the park, Universal Plaza becomes the center of holiday joy with the return of “Grinchmas™” – a wildly whimsical celebration straight out of Who-ville. Each evening, as snow flurries dance through the air, guests gather for the beloved tree-lighting ceremony accompanied by the harmonies of the Who-ville singers – a moment so joyful it could make even the Grinch himself grin.

Mystère
The Heartbeat of Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas
By Jody Robinson
There are moments in Las Vegas when the lights, sound, and spectacle blur into one mesmerizing experience – and Mystère by Cirque du Soleil is one of those rare moments that leaves you breathless. On a recent evening at Treasure Island, I found myself swept into a world that felt both otherworldly and deeply human – a kaleidoscope of color, movement, and pure emotion that has been captivating audiences for over three decades.
As the lights dimmed inside the 1,616-seat Mystère Theatre – the first custom-built Cirque du Soleil venue in the world – I could sense that what I was about to witness was no ordinary show. Mystère has been called the “flower in the desert” by Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberté, and from the opening moment, it was clear why. Every element bloomed with life: the thunder of drums, the flutter of silks, the gasp of acrobats suspended midair.
The production’s more than 65 international artists embody an extraordinary spectrum of characters – from the mischievous Clown whose antics kept the audience laughing, to the electrifying Red Bird soaring across the stage with boundless energy, to the delightfully oversized Baby who manages to be both hilarious and endearing. Together, they weave a story
that transcends language and logic, celebrating the wonder and mystery of human connection.
Each act of Mystère is a testament to raw athleticism and artistic grace. The Chinese Poles defy gravity as performers leap and slide with breathtaking speed. The Hand-to-Hand balancing act showcases strength and stillness in perfect harmony. And when the Trapeze and Bungee artists take flight, you can feel the collective awe ripple through the audience – a reminder that the impossible is always within reach.
The music, composed exclusively for the show, pulses like a living thing, guiding every movement and emotion. The costumes are a feast for the eyes – vibrant, fluid, and otherworldly – and the set design transforms the stage into a dreamscape where anything can happen.
Since its debut on December 25, 1993, Mystère has performed more than 11,000 shows, entertaining millions of guests from around the world. It’s earned eight “Best Production Show in Las Vegas” awards from the Las Vegas Review-Journal and remains the gold standard for live entertainment on the Strip. Yet what struck me most wasn’t its legacy or accolades – it was its heart.
There’s an undeniable joy that radiates from every performer, a shared sense of purpose that transcends the stage. As I joined the standing ovation at the show’s close, I realized that Mystère isn’t just a performance –it’s a celebration of life itself.
For those seeking to experience the magic of Cirque du Soleil in its purest form, Mystère remains a must-see. After more than 30 years, it continues to remind us that wonder never fades – it only evolves, soaring higher with every leap, laugh, and heartbeat.
Cirque du Soleil’s Mystère performs exclusively at Treasure Island in Las Vegas. For showtimes and tickets, visit cirquedusoleil.com/mystere.

The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan
By Stephanie Frisch
In August of 2022 President Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 into law.
The new drug law makes improvements to Medicare by lowering drug costs and improving the sustainability of the Medicare program for generations to come.
For the first time, beginning in 2025, the new drug law requires that all Medicare prescription drug plans, referred to as Medicare Part D plans, both stand-alone drug plans and Medicare Advantage plans with prescription drug coverage to offer enrollees the option to pay out-of-pocket prescription drug costs in capped monthly installment payments instead of all at once at the pharmacy. This will be very helpful for people who have a Part D deductible that needs to be paid first before drug copays begin (in 2026 it can be as high as $615). Centers for Medicare/
Medicaid Services (CMS) has named this program the “Medicare Prescription Payment Plan”.
Now in its second year, Part D Enrollees may opt into the program prior to the beginning of the 2026 plan year, or in any month during a plan year. They do this by notifying the Part D sponsor (insurance company) and they then complete the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan election process. This process will be available by mail, tollfree numbers, or website application. All of these options must be provided by the Part D insurance carrier and must be processed within 24 hours when an enrollee is already enrolled in the Part D plan.
Part D enrollees who opt into the program will pay $0 at the pharmacy for their covered drug instead of the co-pay they would normally pay when filling the prescription. The Part D insurance company must then bill program participants in monthly installments for the co-pays or cost sharing incurred. The pharmacies will be paid directly by the Part D insurance companies.

Paws, Whiskers, and Second Chances:
Inside Cat Nap’s Mission to Rescue Huntington Beach’s Felines
CatNap Hangout & Adoptions stands out in Surf City as a sanctuary for both felines and the humans who love them.
Founded by Jayne Tolcher, CatNap’s story began in 2015 with a roadside rescue of a small kitten that inspired her to start a non-profit cat rescue named for her new feline friend: Alfie’s Kitten Rescue.
By late 2019, Jayne’s vision of a lounge-style rescue space came to life as Cat Nap Hangout & Adoptions, with a simple but powerful mission to “save as many cat lives as possible and give them a place to call home until they are adopted.” Since opening, Cat Nap has rescued and adopted out more than 2,500 cats and kittens.
What truly sets Cat Nap apart from other Orange County rescues is its unique, open-concept environment. Here, cats and kittens roam freely, choosing their own adventures— whether it’s playing with each other, snuggling up for a nap, or hopping onto a visitor’s lap.
Their website features a wish list to streamline product identification and delivery. Visitors can also drop off donations in person – an opportunity to meet the cats and see their impact firsthand. Financial donations, whether one-time or recurring, help cover essentials like food, veterinary bills, and cleaning supplies. Cat toys, interactive laser pointers, treats, and playlands are also appreciated, enhancing the cats’ quality of life as they await adoption.
Prospective adopters fill out an application – either online or at the lounge – and receive a telephone interview, usually within 24 hours.
“Some have described the experience as magical and many people visit on a regular basis for different reasons,” says Jayne. “The lounge is designed for interaction: plenty of seats for people, playlands and beds for cats, and toys and treats for everyone to enjoy.”
Unlike traditional rescues where potential adopters reach into cages, Cat Nap guests can spend as much time as they want mingling with the cats, observing their personalities and finding the perfect match.
“We greatly value our volunteers and encourage individuals to apply online,” says Jayne. Volunteers can choose their shifts and, in return for just one two-hour shift per week, “receive hours of free kitty love time!” This mutually rewarding system ensures the cats receive plenty of attention and care, while volunteers enjoy the therapeutic benefits of feline company.
Donations are always welcomed and needed and both wet and dry cat (& kitten) food is always a high priority.
“Oftentimes we have visitors who desire that we expedite the interview process because they ‘just can’t leave without this amazing cat’ they just met. In these cases, we contact the service right away and can usually get the review process completed within 30 minutes to an hour, often resulting in very happy guests leaving with the kitty of their dreams.”
The cats and kittens at Cat Nap come from a wide array of backgrounds: “During kitten season, we have people reach out to us because they found a cat with kittens or just kittens. We also watch some of the local kill shelters for friendly kitties that may be on the kill list for whatever reason.” Cat Nap has rescued cats from hoarding situations, abuse, abandonment, and medical neglect –giving each one a second chance.
Cat Nap Hangout & Adoptions is more than a rescue; it’s a community hub where lives are changed, one purr at a time. As Jayne and her team continue their mission, they invite volunteers, donors, and adopters alike to join them in making a difference for Huntington Beach’s most vulnerable residents.
like a weekend getaway without ever leaving Orange County.
ABOARD CITY CRUISES NEWPORT BEACH: Setting Sail for Unforgettable Moments
By Jody Robinson
There’s something magical about seeing Newport Harbor from the water—the sun dancing on the waves, the salt-kissed air, and that distinct sense of calm that seems to only exist at sea.
Our family recently rediscovered just how rejuvenating a few hours on the water can be when we boarded City Cruises Newport Beach for their Signature Brunch Cruise to celebrate grandma’s birthday. My husband, Tim, and I chose this afternoon adventure after having previously experienced one of the company’s Dinner Cruises. Each outing offered a different kind of enchantment—one drenched in golden daylight and the other wrapped in the soft glow of twilight.
As we stepped aboard the sleek City Cruises yacht, the staff welcomed us with genuine smiles and champagne in hand—a promising start to a leisurely two-hour brunch on the bay.
We found a spot on the open-air deck, where panoramic views stretched from the Balboa Pavilion to the stately waterfront homes of Lido Isle.
The brunch buffet was a feast for both the eyes and appetite. Crisp salads, savory breakfast favorites, and an array of decadent desserts filled the beautifully arranged stations. Our personal favorite? The cheesy eggs, chef-carved tri-tip and array of delicious pastries, which paired perfectly with bottomless bubbly. Between bites, we wandered to the upper deck to soak in the coastal scenery— kayakers gliding by, sea lions basking lazily on buoys, and the sparkling blue of the Pacific. It was the perfect blend of relaxation and indulgence—
Tim and I felt the same way aboard the dinner cruise, defined by an atmosphere that was at once romantic and elegant. Twinkling lights from the shoreline reflected in the still water, and as the sun dipped behind the peninsula, the yacht’s softly lit interior came alive with a warm, inviting glow.
Dinner began with attentive tableside service and a selection of Californiainspired dishes, each plated as beautifully as the views outside the panoramic windows. Between courses, live music drifted through the cabin—smooth, soulful tunes that set the tone for an evening of effortless elegance. Out on deck, couples danced beneath the stars, and I couldn’t help but think how this would be the perfect setting for an anniversary, proposal, or simply a special night out.
Whether you’re celebrating an occasion or simply craving a fresh perspective on the California coast, City Cruises Newport Beach offers brunch, lunch, and dinner sailings year-round, each one promising a front-row seat to Southern California’s coastal charm—best enjoyed, of course, with a glass of champagne in hand and the sea breeze in your hair.

HebeDoc:
Transforming Smiles, Transforming Lives
By Jody Robinson
Aconfident smile has always been more than a cosmetic upgrade — it’s a doorway to self-assurance, personal connection, and the freedom to live without hesitation. For countless Americans, however, the cost of restorative dentistry places that dream frustratingly out of reach. Full-mouth restorations in the U.S. can run $50,000 to $150,000, leaving countless people living with missing teeth, chronic discomfort, and diminished confidence. Enter HebeDoc, a U.S.-based service specializing in premium dental-implant solutions performed in state-of-theart clinics abroad, where world-class care meets dramatic cost savings and life-changing results.
HebeDoc was born from a deeply personal moment, not a business plan. Nearly a decade ago Stewart Roberts’ mother revealed that deteriorating dental health had taken a toll on his 80-year-old father’s comfort and confidence. When she also shared they had been quoted $43,000 to replace a single upper arch, Stewart
and his wife Sally were driven to offer his parents and people just like them an alternative. In 2017, the couple co-founded HebeDoc, a premium, concierge-style pathway to world-class dental care abroad—combining luxury-level travel coordination with access to rigorously vetted international dentists at prices everyday Americans can afford, without compromise.
HebeDoc specializes in full-mouth restoration via complete restoration with crowns or full-arch replacements using only the highest quality implants found anywhere in the world. The “Rolls Royce of dental implants,” top European brands Straumann and Nobel Biocare All-on-4 or All-on-6 implants are the most trusted systems in the world, backed by lifetime and five-year guarantees, respectively. By focusing solely on these transformative procedures, the company delivers results that rival—or exceed— U.S. standards, at an average of 63% less than its U.S. counterparts.
Roberts and his team start with a personalized virtual assessment, where patients discuss their dental goals and challenges. From there, they’re matched with top-tier partner dentists to create a customized treatment plan – dentists who specialize in and have performed thousands of implant procedures. Professionals who travel to the U.S. every year to attend continuing education courses at NYU and Harvard Dental School to stay abreast of advancements in technology and techniques.
HebeDoc then manages the entire experience. For patients in Orange County and San Diego, that means door-to-door private transport for the three-hour ride to Molar City, Yuma at the Arizona border, border assistance, hotel arrangements, scheduling, and post-procedure checks. Every stress point is removed—ensuring clients can focus on what matters most: their health and their smiles. The result is a seamless, high-end dental journey that goes far beyond typical medical tourism.
For those who wonder whether the experience is truly safe, seamless, and life-changing, it’s not statistics that offer comfort — it’s the voices of those who have already taken the leap. HebeDoc’s hundreds of heartfelt testimonials read less like online reviews and more like love letters to a team that restores not only smiles, but trust.
After delaying her treatment for years, client Tracey Joy took the leap—and returned with a smile that left her husband stunned. Soon, her family followed suit, creating a ripple effect of restored confidence and health. One postcard from Ireland captured their experience succinctly: “HebeDoc gave us our smiles—and our vacation.”
Another poignant story is Sue, in her 80s, whose teeth have been gray since her 40’s due to adult acne medication, was convinced it was too late. HebeDoc helped her reclaim her life, her confidence, and her joy. “I should have done this 30 years ago,” she says. “If you’re wondering whether you’re worth it—yes. You are.”
