A Community of Care: My Journey with Community Care Hospice OC

When I founded Community Care Hospice OC, my vision was never simply to create another cookie-cutter hospice agency. My dream is to offer greater resources that expand to assemble a true community of care. Hospice, at its heart, is about valuing every person’s sacred journey with tranquility and empathy. But to me, it also means reaching outward: supporting the families, caregivers and loved one who walk alongside our patients. This dedication to our community is one of the many values which sets us apart and has become a guiding principle in everything we do.

One of the most powerful ways we bring this philosophy to life is by embedding ourselves deeply into the local community. We partner with colleges such as the UCI Wen Public Health Undergraduate and Graduate programs. Providing pre-nursing students with internships offers our future hands-on experience and teaches true compassionate care. This time with our interns brings our team so much fulfillmentt in watching these young professionals grow in both skill and empathy during their time with us.

Spiritual care is another cornerstone of our work. Through chaplain interns, we are able to extend support not only within board and care facil-

ities and even hospitals, but also to organizations like local police departments and local veterans’ groups. These volunteers help create bridges of understanding, offering comfort and conversation to individuals who may otherwise feel isolated or unheard. I am especially proud of how our team is opening new lines of communication for veterans, many of whom carry stories and experiences long unspoken.

Our outreach doesn’t stop at patient care. As an agency, we have committed ourselves to being an active presence in the broader community

as well. We sponsor veteran-focused events, such as the Veteran Stand Down, and host our own gatherings, from block parties to wellness screenings that include free blood pressure checks. These gatherings are more than events—they are opportunities to weave stronger connections across neighborhoods and generations.

At Community Care Hospice OC, we are extremely proud to be the only hospice agency that offers an additional layer of support with a holistic approach. I often express to families that we care for the whole person – spiritually, emotionally, socially and medically. However, end-of-life care is far more than simply managing physical pain; it is about healing hearts, deepening connections, and creating lasting moments of profound meaning.

Of course, hospice care always begins with the patient. Every family we serve receives a personalized care plan designed by a multidisciplinary team of nurses, physicians, social workers, chaplains, and trained volunteers. It is not a one-size-fits-all approach. We sit, we listen, and we learn from each individual we meet. Pain management and comfort are always at the center of what we do, but we go beyond traditional medicine by offering complementary therapies—services that come at no cost to the patient or their loved ones.

My team and I are dedicated to setting a higher bar for end-of-life care in Orange County. To us, hospice isn’t just a medical service—it’s a ministry of heart, a calling, and a chance to leave a legacy of love. With each patient we serve, each family we comfort, and each veteran or neighbor we engage, we are not simply providing hospice care. We are building a community of compassion, one life at a time.

Not Your Grandparent’s Nursing Home: A Beginner’s Guide to Modern-Day Senior Living

Most of us meticulously plan and save for our retirement. Envisioning travel, picking up hobbies, and spending more time with family.

My wife and I, for instance, plan on visiting as many National Parks as we can!

For us, and many, the idea of moving out of our home isn’t part of the plan.

However, what happens if, as you age, you need to move out of your home for health reasons or some extra support? While most of us would like to stay in our homes, unexpected life events, such as a sudden health shift or the loss of a loved one, can quickly change our plans. What is your plan B?

Too often, families are forced to make quick decisions under stress without knowing what options are available. The truth is, having a plan in place doesn’t take away your independence; it protects it.

Surprisingly, one of the greatest threats to our well-being as we age isn’t only physical, it is the growing impact of chronic isolation. The U.S. Surgeon General’s 2023 report highlights that loneliness has the same impact on health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, increasing the risk of dementia, heart disease, and early death. The negative effect of being disconnected from members in our community is real, and it shows up quietly over time. A vibrant senior living community can offer a dynamic social environment and engaging activities that enrich people’s daily lives.

Life Reimagined: What Modern Senior Living Offers

There are many misconceptions about what senior living looks like. People often imagine the sterile nursing homes our grandparents might have known. (Remember that smell?) However, what I see when I walk into today’s communities is an environment that is vibrant and full of life. I see communities with gardening clubs, wellness classes, games, outings, happy hours, and real friendships being formed every day. And they smell good, too!

When you’re no longer worrying about yard work, grocery shopping, or managing the stairs, you suddenly have time and energy for the things that bring you joy. Morning coffee with new friends, a walking group, art classes, or chef-prepared meals that you didn’t have to plan or cook.

Today’s communities come in a variety of shapes and sizes, with amenities and services that appeal to active adults and offer supportive services when needed.

Understanding the Costs of Senior Living

So, how much does senior living cost?

Let’s be honest, the financial aspect is often the most daunting

part of this conversation. While the emotional decision is significant, understanding the costs can feel overwhelming if you don’t know where to start.

In Orange County, independent living communities typically range from $2,500 and up per month. Assisted living usually starts around $4,500 and up. Memory care, which includes more specialized support, often starts around $6,000, and skilled nursing, needed for complex medical care, can exceed $10,000 a month. It’s a lot, and most families are surprised to learn that Medicare doesn’t cover this type of long-term custodial care.

That’s why I always encourage people to start preparing early, even if a move isn’t on the immediate horizon. If you’re in your 50s or 60s and healthy, look into long-term care insurance. The earlier you invest in a policy, the more affordable it tends to be and it can be a gamechanger later on if care needs increase. Please consult with your financial advisor regarding the best plan for you.

For homeowners, I’ve also seen reverse mortgages help make senior living a reality. In the right circumstances, using home equity to cover monthly costs or supplement a spouse’s care can be a lifeline. It’s not the right fit for every situation, but with the right guidance, usually from a financial advisor or elder law

attorney, it can offer flexibility that many families overlook.

Your Trusted Guide to Senior Living

That’s where Certified Senior Advisors like me can help. My services and guidance are always at no cost to families. We are here to provide clarity, support, and practical solutions tailored to your specific needs. If you’re exploring options or just need someone to talk it through with, please don’t hesitate to reach out. You don’t have to navigate this alone.

It does take planning; there are more options such as VA benefits, Medi-Cal programs, life insurance settlements, and there are often more tools available than people realize. But it takes planning. I always tell families: Don’t wait for a crisis. Start the conversation early, while everyone is still clear-headed and can make thoughtful, informed choices. Jay Minor (949) 444-9055

+ Classy Non-Smoking Sports Bar

Sophistication now smolders in the heart of San Juan Capistrano within the walls of The Winston’s Club, where tradition meets modern luxury. The recently opened cigar lounge and sports bar are not only changing the perception of what a cigar club can be, but also sets a new standard for elevated experiences in Orange County.

Founded by Rick Collins – known to patrons as “The Guv’nor” – The Winston’s Club is the culmination of nearly 20 years of passion and inspiration. Collins’s journey started in 2005 when he began dreaming of a cigar lounge and bar that would honor the nuances of cigar enjoyment paired with fine spirits. But it was during a 2023 sabbatical to his native London, where he toured the city’s top cigar lounges, that breathed new life into this vision.

non-smoking sports bar that feels more like a five-star hotel lounge than a traditional cigar den. Light, airy and stylish, Winston’s features custom Italian bar stools, modern design accents and a convivial atmosphere where every detail is carefully curated - a place where both seasoned cigar connoisseurs and fledgling aficionados alike feel at home.

Collins returned with a pair of influenced insights: first, that unparalleled client service should be the hallmark of every lounge, and second, that cigar clubs could break free from the dark, heavy, and sometimes dated design conventions that had long defined the industry.

The result? An expansive 4,100-squarefoot reimagined lounge and classy

A SPACE FOR EVERY TASTE

At its core is a dedicated cigar lounge featuring a large walk-in humidor filled with premium selections and personalized lockers for members to store their prized collections. The venue also includes a sleek, smokefree bar (think premium pours, craft cocktails, an extensive whiskey and bourbon library and a wine retail center offering well-priced selections to suit every palate).

For those seeking exclusivity, The Winston’s VIP room provides a chic setting perfect for private events and celebrations, offering privacy and luxury in equal measure. Regular events include whiskey and tequila tastings, live music sessions and cigar-focused gatherings and for sports enthusiasts, dozens of thoughtfully placed TVs to ensure access to all the game day action.

DISCOVER WHO WE ARE & FIND OUT IF WE CAN BE OF SERVICE

Prescott Tax & Wealth Management was formed over 28 years ago to focus on the needs of individuals who want and deserve a more comprehensive approach to their financial affairs. As a multi-generational firm, we believe our family office approach can provide you with the holistic financial service you deserve.

As with everything in life, nothing is constant. Our interests, goals and needs are perpetually evolving, and the number of complexities continue to grow whether we like it or not. As many of you know, the financial services landscape has changed tremendously over the past few years. People are searching for trusted teams that will advise them and their families in all areas of their financial life.

In this article, we shed light on a few examples of who we serve best, highlighting our commitment to Business Owners, 55+ Year Olds seeking consolidated financial services, High Net Worth Individuals with complex tax, financial, and estate planning needs, Divorcees and Widowed Individuals, Successor Trustees, and People with Real Estate holdings.

Business Owners: Navigating Financial Waters

In today’s environment, business owners face a dynamic landscape. Tax laws are constantly changing and are hard to keep up to date on. Our onestop shop approach offers business owners the ability to let us handle the least favorite tasks, which tend to be tax and compliance, and let you focus on what you do best: running your business. For our business owner clients, we prepare their individual and business tax returns, which allows us to maximize tax planning recommendations, advise on retirement plans (i.e. 401(k), defined benefit plan), complete the monthly bookkeeping, and handle any group health insurance needs. The benefit of using this consolidated approach is that we not only provide the recommendation, but service and monitor it. For example, if we recommended a Single 401(k), we coordinate the establishment of your 401(k) plan, set up the account, and advise on the investments/plan.

55+ Year Olds: Simplifying Financial Lives

In your golden years, simplicity is key. At Prescott Tax & Wealth Management, we offer consolidated financial services, including tax preparation, financial planning, investment management, estate planning, and more with the goal of helping you get organized and start seriously planning for retirement. A common theme we see among this crowd is that they have various accounts, investments, or policies spread across many organizations that aren’t a part of a coordinated plan. We also see couples where one partner handles the finances and the other is out of the loop, which leaves their family vulnerable if something were to happen to that person. Our customized approach allows us to

help you eliminate the uncertainty of not knowing when you’ll retire, provides individuals and/or families with direction in these key working years, and certainty that you will have a team to help you if anything were to happen.

High Net Worth Individuals: Tailored Solutions

For those with substantial wealth, we specialize in addressing intricate financial, tax, and estate planning needs. We work closely with you to create a customized strategy that preserves and grows your wealth while minimizing tax liabilities. We utilize complex estate planning strategies (i.e., Charitable Remainder Trusts), to ensure that your legacy is preserved, and your beneficiaries maximize their inheritance. Additionally, we provide our high-net-worth clients with access to alternative investment opportunities outside of our traditional investment management services through our Broker Dealer, Independent Financial Group.

Divorcees & Widowed Individuals: Crafting a Fresh Start

Life transitions, especially divorce and death, can be daunting. Our team specializes in providing financial clarity during such times in the hope of giving you the freedom to control your life going forward. We start off by ensuring that your financial life is organized. We use financial planning software to create a dynamic net worth statement so that you know where everything is and then create a comprehensive financial plan customized to your new lifestyle. Our goal is to help provide direction and comfort in knowing that things are in a good place or heading in that direction.

Successor Trustees: Guiding Trust Management

Let’s be honest. No one or thing in life prepares you to be a parent and/or a successor trustee. The role of a successor trustee requires an understanding of tax, investments, and financial planning. Fortunately, our team is uniquely positioned to handle all these areas. We ensure a seamless transition, meticulous compliance with legal requirements, and efficient distribution to beneficiaries, so that you uphold your fiduciary responsibilities, avoid paying unnecessary taxes to our “friend,” Uncle Sam, and most importantly help avoid family conflicts.

Individuals with Real Estate Holdings: Maximizing Returns

Managing real estate can be profitable but challenging. Whether you’re an investor or a personal property owner, our team can help you make sure that you are properly titling your real estate holdings, maximize tax deductions and assist with tax planning when you decide to sell (i.e., 1031 exchanges, Qualified Opportunity Zones). As an added perk, we can also assist with the bookkeeping and property management for select locations.

If you or anyone you know fits this profile, we would love to chat and have the opportunity to become your trusted partner.

Pearl32 Dentistry

Redefining Smiles, Elevating Wellness

Pearl32 Dentistry has been deeply woven into the fabric of South Orange County, building strong, lasting relationships with generations of local families since its inception more than 30 years ago. Initially launched as Laguna Smiles, the practice has transformed under the joint leadership of Dr. Masih Rezaei and Dr. Nojan Jahedmanesh, Pearl32 blends a legacy of community service with a distinctly modern, wellness-driven vision.

“We believe that exceptional dentistry goes beyond beautiful smiles – it’s about helping our patients live healthier, more confident lives,” says Dr. Rezaei. “Dentistry isn’t separate from wellness – it’s an essential part of it. When your mouth is healthy, you feel better, you look better, and you live better.”

Pearl32 Dentistry offers a complete suite of dental services – general dentistry, cosmetic smile makeovers, dental implants, orthodontics, preventive care and advanced restorative options. While Pearl32 is deeply clinical at its core, there’s also an artistry at play.

Dr. Rezaei, equal parts sculptor and dentist, brings a trained eye for detail to every transformation. Each smile design is treated like a living canvas – subtle nuances in shade, harmony, and balance create stunning, natural results. From gentle preventive checkups to full-mouth rehabilitations, Pearl32’s all-in-one offerings mean convenience and continuity for every member of the family.

Where Pearl32 really shines is in its seamless fusion of cutting-edge technology with patient comfort. Same-day CAD/CAM crowns mean no second appointments or awkward temporaries. Digital CBCT imaging and intraoral scanners provide 3D precision without the discomfort of old-fashioned impressions. And with AI-assisted diagnostics, treatments are planned with remarkable accuracy, often catching potential issues earlier.

“Our technology allows us to be more precise and more efficient,” says Dr. Rezaei, who earned his dental doctorate (DDS) from Loma Linda University. As a mentor and instructor in dental education, he remains deeply involved in staying abreast of emerging technologies and best practices. “But just as importantly, it allows our patients to feel more relaxed, because they know they’re in the most capable hands.”

Also a graduate of Loma Linda, Dr. Nojan Jahedmanesh’s earlier studies in Tehran, followed by research at the UCLA School of Dentistry’s Weintraub Center, contribute a depth of understanding in dental materials, biomimetics, and innovation.

WELLNESS BEYOND THE SMILE

Pearl32’s commitment to wellness is more than a philosophy – it’s practical, too. For those without insurance, the Pearl32 Membership Plan makes preventive and restorative care both affordable and accessible, while flexible pay-

ment options ensure that pursuing your dream smile doesn’t feel out of reach.

The practice also extends its care beyond the office, participating in community outreach and education initiatives. It’s this blend of expertise, compassion and community connection that makes Pearl32 feel less like a clinic and more like a cornerstone of wellness in South Orange County. At its heart, Pearl32 Dentistry & Wellness isn’t about dental work – it’s about lifestyle. It’s about the confidence of walking into a room with a radiant smile. The ease of knowing your oral health is cared for with precision and innovation. And the peace of mind that comes from a team invested in your overall well-being.

“Our goal is to give people more than just beautiful smiles,” says Dr. Rezaei. “We want them to leave here feeling healthier, happier, and ready to live life fully.”

For those ready to elevate both their smile and their wellness journey, Pearl32 is more than a dental practice – it’s a destination.

Local Care, Genuine Connections:

In an era when mental health conversations are finally gaining momentum, Ocean View Adult Psychiatric Health Facility has become a trusted resource for Southern California residents seeking a fresh approach to mental wellness.

Since 2012, Ocean View has specialized in stabilizing acute psychiatric symptoms for adults aged 18 and up—always putting choice, privacy and heartfelt care front and center.

With 40 voluntary beds—most in private rooms—patients at Ocean View decide when and how they begin their journey to better health.

“What really sets us apart is the compassion our team brings to every interaction,” shares Carla DiCandia, MPA. “Time and again, our patients tell us, ‘I actually feel cared for.’ That, to me, is the highest compliment we could receive.

“Patients who choose Ocean View for treatment come in for a number of reasons. Our hope is to identify and treat psychiatric symptoms before they become severe or dangerous. Criteria for admissions ranges from depression, hopelessness/

helplessness, isolating, racing thoughts, anxiety, mania, delusions, suicidal ideation, and a whole lot more in between. As long as the individual is willing to get the help, we can help.”

View is opening a Forensic Mental Health Rehabilitation Center: a unique, longer-term setting designed for justice-involved individuals needing structured recovery outside hospital or jail environments.

As Carla explains, “It’s about meeting people where they are and offering dignity. These new units will free up emergency resources and give vulnerable patients a true chance to recover.” The center’s expansion even reaches inland, with two new facilities for adolescents and adults coming soon to Colton.

Unlike facilities focused on quick turnarounds, Ocean View’s average stay is seven to 14 days—giving patients space to decompress, explore solutions, and restore confidence. Each resident consults daily with one of five psychiatrists, plus an internist and social worker, ensuring holistic attention to every need.

“No one ever leaves us without a plan,” says Carla. “Whether it’s returning to a trusted program, building new support, or connecting with an outpatient therapist, we make sure every patient has real next steps.”

Ocean View is also expanding. The team is adding another 40 beds upstairs for patients who require a higher level of secure care. And in a local first, Ocean

Ocean View’s advocacy includes supporting older adults—one of the most underserved groups when it comes to mental health.

“We refuse to accept that depression is just part of aging,” says Carla. “With the right care, there’s no reason anyone should be living at less than their full potential.” This October, Ocean View is teaming up with Saddleback MemorialCare to present community classes highlighting the importance of mental wellness for seniors.

For Southern California families, Ocean View is more than a facility— it’s a friendly, locally known refuge where every detail is thoughtfully planned and delivered by professionals who care. From insurance (including Medicare A & B) to individualized discharge planning, Ocean View continues to set the standard for quality psychiatric care.

“Providing real, lasting support is our mission,” says Carla. “At Ocean View, we care for every patient with the same dedication, warmth, and trust you’d expect from those closest to you—and that’s something our community can always count on.”

Protecting Year-RoundPets with

Flea, Tick, and Heartworm Prevention

As a veterinarian, I often tell pet owners that one of the simplest and most effective gifts they can give their dogs and cats is protection from parasites. Fleas, ticks, and heartworms are tiny creatures, but left unchecked, they cause enormous problems – not only for pets, but for people too. Preventive care is far easier, safer, and less costly than treating the illnesses these pests bring.

WHY PREVENTION MATTERS

Fleas are more than just a nuisance. A single flea can bite hundreds of times a day, triggering intense itching and allergic skin reactions. Flea infestations spread quickly and lead to secondary infections, anemia in small pets, and tapeworm transmission. Once a flea problem establishes itself in your home, it can take weeks – even months – to fully eradicate.

Ticks pose a different but equally serious risk. They transmit dangerous diseases like Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, and anaplasmosis. Some of these can cause lifelong joint problems, organ damage, and in severe cases, death. What makes ticks especially challenging is that they can be active year-round in many regions, not just during the warmer months. A single unnoticed bite can change a pet’s – and their family’s – health permanently.

And then there’s heartworm – a mosquito-borne parasite that targets both dogs and cats. In dogs, heartworms grow up to a foot long and live in the heart and lungs, causing coughing, fatigue, weight loss, and eventually heart failure. In cats, the disease is much harder to diagnose and often fatal, with symptoms ranging from sudden collapse to no warning at all. Heartworm disease is prevalent in many parts of the United States, including California, and cases are spreading into areas that historically saw few incidents.

The good news is that all these threats are preventable. Modern veterinary medicine offers safe, effective monthly preventives that protect pets year-round. Preventive options come in easy-to-administer forms: flavored chewable tablets or topical liquids. Many products even cover multiple parasites at once, simplifying routines for busy families.

Preventive care does more than save your pet discomfort – it saves money, too. Treating a severe flea infestation may involve medication, home treatments, and even professional pest control. Treating heartworm disease in dogs can cost thousands of dollars, and there is no approved therapy for cats. Prevention, by contrast, is a

Parasites don’t take vacations, and gaps in protection leave pets vulnerable.

small monthly investment that avoids devastating outcomes.

The most important step is consistency. Parasites don’t take vacations, and gaps in protection leave pets vulnerable. I recommend year-round prevention for dogs and cats, regardless of whether they spend most of their time indoors or out. Fleas and mosquitoes can easily enter homes, and ticks cling to clothing or other pets.

Regular veterinary checkups ensure the products you use are safe and effective for your pet’s age, weight, and health status. Blood tests for heartworm are typically recommended once a year to ensure early detection, even when preventives are given consistently.

Pet owners often think of parasite prevention as optional, but from my perspective, it’s essential healthcare. Protecting your pet from fleas, ticks, and heartworms means protecting their comfort, health, and even their life. By making prevention a regular part of your care routine, you’re ensuring years of happiness, companionship, and peace of mind.

Pets of the Month

Senior dog Petunia is a furry ray of sunshine. A special needs doggie, Petunia is fully blind but doesn’t let that slow her down one bit. She has the sweetest personality and brightens up any room she enters. Petunia is looking for a adopter who will love her for all of adorable quirks.

Brothers Sam and Frodo have been through quite the harrowing journey. Brought to the shelter at only four weeks old, they were severely underweight and in very poor condition. When soon after Frodo fell deathly ill, it was having his brother Sam by his side that ultimately helped him to pull through. Now that they’re back and ready for adoption, this dynamic duo is looking to be adopted together in a home where they can continue on with their kitty adventures.

ADOPT ME

Nine month old Callie is quite the inspiration. After losing her leg to a serious injury as a tiny kitten, Callie refused to be kept down. She not only taught herself to get around her own way but kept her sweet and curious personality at the same time. Though technically special-needs, Callie would settle in well to most homes with only minor modifications. She gets along with other cats and her silly antics are sure to bring a smile to anyone’s face.

Meet Agatha, a three year old spayed female rabbit. A quiet bunny, she can sometimes be a little shy at first meeting but will come up to you out of curiosity and in hopes of head pets as she gets more comfortable. She is a medium energy level bunny, has excellent litter box habits, and would thrive in a loving indoor home.

If you are interested in adopting an animal listed here, please call the San Clemente/Dana Point Animal Shelter at (949)492-1617 or visit them at 221 Avenida Fabricante, San Clemente.

AEP- It’s About Saving You $$

Calling all existing Medicare Beneficiaries, are you looking to save some money on either your monthly premiums, your copays, your prescription drug co-pays or perhaps a trifecta and you get all three? Then contact my agency soon to review your Medicare plan options.

The biggest way to save money is to see if a Medicare Advantage plan would work for you. If it does work, you cancel your Medicare Supplement and Medicare Drug plan for 2026 because a Medicare Advantage plan gives you that type of coverage and financial protection from costly medical bills. These types of plans in Orange County typically have little to no premium. The savings can be life changing to some people, especially married couples over the age of 70. Medicare supplement plan premiums go up as you get older in addition to the annual premium increases related to the cost of medical care for their enrollees (Every year Medicare Part A pays less, so the supplement to Medicare has to pay more)

Most people on a “standalone” Medicare prescription drug plan don’t realize when their monthly premium increases in the new year because if they’re taking social security the premium is typically being directly deducted from their social security check. Insurance companies have increases in their monthly RX plan premium and their annual deductible. Have your

prescriptions changed since you enrolled in your current Medicare drug plan? If they’re expensive medications (in the $35-$100 range when you fill them) then it’s time for a review. Also, familiarize yourself with the “Inflation Reduction Act” changes to your prescription drug coverage in 2026. It will lower your out-of-pocket drug costs, which is great news! However, as a result, your monthly Medicare RX plan premium will go up.

Also, while the Annual Enrollment Period is NOT the time to change your Medicare supplement plan (The months around your birthday month are, it’s called

the “birthday rule”) it could be a time to get educated about what other carrier’s premiums are for the Medicare supplement plan that you’re on. Medicare Supplement plans are all standardized by the government. A Plan F, Plan G or Plan N, for example, are all the same, no matter what insurance company you use. However, some insurance carriers have upped their game, adding additional benefits such as routine vision and hearing, acupuncture and more to their Medicare supplement plan for a more “value added” experience. The additional premium for these extra benefits is minimal.

The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) begins October 15th and ends December 7th. If you’d like to schedule a no cost Medicare options review, contact my agency soon, and either I or a well-qualified Medicare broker from my team will be happy to help you.

The air is infused with aromatherapy and soft solfeggio tones designed to quiet the mind and comfort the spirit. Each treatment room echo nature’s calming rhythms for an experience that is luxurious and deeply personal, reflecting Lizzy’s belief that emotional comfort is just as important as physical treatment.

Lizzy’s passion is borne from her own path through chronic pain, profound loss and emotional hardship – life

chapters that taught her how natural, holistic healing can bring back hope. She created Wellbeing to ensure others a compassionate space to rebuild mind, body and spirit.

Dr. Grandt’s journey began in traditional medicine, graduating from Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in 2001 and becoming a board-certified Foot & Ankle surgeon. After more than a decade in private practice with Lizzy, he began exploring integrative therapies as safer, more sustainable treatment paths – reducing reliance on pharmaceuticals and invasive procedures while enhancing the body’s own healing potential.

Together, they’ve married the precision of Western medical training with ancient healing wisdom and innovative wellness technology, creating a truly unique destination for personal renewal. Guests leave feeling lighter, more energized and more aligned. Whether you’re seeking relief from chronic pain, deeper sleep, stress reduction or a revitalized glow, you’ll find tailored care here.

“I suffer from chronic back pain - some days it’s hard to manage without taking pain medication, but I worry about the side effects of long-term use,” says Client Barbara O. of San Juan Capistrano. “I honestly wasn’t expecting much when I scheduled my initial visit. I walked in hunched over in pain and walked out feeling infinitely better. It was nothing short of miraculous for me.”

There

are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.

ACTINIC KERATOSIS

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered precancerous because, if left alone, it could develop into skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed to the sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.

SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly, and some forms are tender to the touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.

MELANOMA

Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. It is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year, and it is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.

WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW

1. Everyone needs to perform a selfskin exam once a month.

2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms, soles, under your nails, and places most have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check—it could save your life.

3. What to look for: ABCDEs and the Ugly Duckling

A - Asymmetry: If you draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?

B - Border: Is there a nice, crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?

C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?

D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6 mm, i.e., the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.

E - Evolution: Has it changed?

F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?

4. Everyone needs a full-body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

CRAFT ON A HIGHER FREQUENCY

A few months ago, my husband declared – half-joking, half-serious –that he was on his way to becoming a bourbon connoisseur. Suddenly, our evenings were punctuated by the soft clink of glasses, long debates about “notes” and “legs,” and a growing collection of impressively unpronounceable bottles. We recently opted for a decidedly different night out with friends (also fledgling aficionados) to check out Stone Groove Stillhouse in Anaheim. I expected a world of whiskey, but what I discovered was an experience far richer and more welcoming than I ever anticipated.

Stepping into the historic MAKE Building in Anaheim, we discovered a concept so original it feels almost futuristic – yet rooted in analog warmth and soulful tradition. Welcome to Stone Groove Stillhouse, the world’s first audio stillhouse, where music and spirits don’t just coexist – they actively shape one another.

The brainchild of husband-and-wife team Jeff and Christa Duggan, Stone Groove Stillhouse showcases cocktails that sing as brightly as the records spinning behind the bar, and food becomes part of the rhythm. It’s not just a distillery, not just a restaurant. It’s an adventure.

How Stone Groove Stillhouse Turns Music Into Spirits

MUSIC AS AN INGREDIENT

The heartbeat of Stone Groove lies in its patent-pending Musically Mastered™ process, a world-first technique that uses sound frequencies, vibrations, and genre-specific energy to enhance the interaction between spirit and wood. Picture American Single Malt Whiskey aged to Jazz Fusion, or a Rye Whiskey steeped in the sonic pulse of Classic Rock, a Hip Hop Rye Whiskey, a Moonlight Sonata-inspired single malt and a Black Heart Gin shaped by bluesy undertones.

The result? Distinctive genre-driven profiles tying sound to flavor in a way that feels almost synesthetic. Take one sip, and you realize – this isn’t just marketing.

We were intrigued by the concept and were surprised to find that we really could discern the difference in taste and aroma between the “Country” and “Blues” bourbons. The spirits were remarkably smooth, balanced, and textured, each with a character

uniquely its own. Also most definitely worth a special mention are a pair of uniquely delicious cocktails - the Velvet Elvis (SG Blues Bourbon and green apples) and the Tragic Kingdom (SC Creamsicle Vodka, Mexican Orange and vanilla).

A KITCHEN WITH A GLOBAL GROOVE

The menu here blends global influences with soulful comfort. Expect elevated takes on bar classics (think a juicy burger enhanced with aged white cheddar, black garlic aioli, caramelized onion and arugula), globally inspired small plates (a perfectly crunchy and sweet honey miso shrimp, “Country Bourbon” glazed carrots paired with whipped goat cheese and hazelnuts) that complement the genre-specific spirits rather than compete with them. It’s food designed to keep you lingering – snacking, sipping, and savoring long after the music kicks in.

At its core, Stone Groove Stillhouse is as much about atmosphere as it is about flavor. Anchored by a meticulously analog reel-to-reel sound system, the acoustically treated dining room feels like a listening lounge colliding with a distillery. Vinyl spins, cocktails flow, and the entire space seems to hum with energy.

Stone Groove is a space where anything seems possible: a bar that doubles as a concert for your palate, a distillery that feels improvised yet perfectly orchestrated.

Ask a SOMM

A good sommelier is a helper, a guide to finding the best wine for your food and experience. For this month’s installment, we again approached South County-based sommelier Micah Sampson to address a few frequently asked questions.

Q Should I pay attention to wine ratings? What do they mean?

A At the end of the day all wine ratings really are are opinions and scores from people who drink and know a lot about wine.

So if you need some help picking out a wine from a region you know nothing about, then sure, take a look at an online magazine and see what some of the ratings say. Generally, 88-90 points and higher mean the wine is going to be good. But once you get to the high 90’s you’re likely going to be paying a lot more for them, mainly because they have the high rating.

But I can let you in on a little secret, many amazing producers out there don’t even get their wines rated! The best way to find these is to look for wines with high ratings, remember the areas they come from, and then look for other producers in the same areas. You can often find killer wines for a fraction of the price when doing it this way. Another secret… this is exactly the way Somm’s Stash wines are made

Q How long do wines stay good after opening?

A This is an easy one, but still important. In general, wines will still be good for a day or two after you open them, but will start to degrade a bit from the moment you open them. Usually by day three you’ll notice the wines aren’t as good as they were when first opened, and by days four and beyond the wines just don’t taste right.

A little hint to get an extra day or two out of opened red wine is to seal the bottle with a cork or rubber stopper and store the half empty bottle in the fridge! The low temp in the fridge helps slow the degradation process. Just let the wine slowly warm up in a glass when you want one, cupping your hands around the glass will speed this up a bit.

Q What are sulfites and are they bad?

A We’ve all heard it… “Do you have any wines without sulfites? They give me headaches.” This is when the som-

melier mentally puts his or her palm to their face.

In the recent social-media-driven years, the word “sulfites” has become the new bad word in wine. But why? When did we become so focused on this one component in wine, treating it like a poison? It’s mentioned with an almost villainous undertone now, like some evil wizard is adding it to wine when no one is looking.

In reality, sulfites have been a known part of wine making for a thousand years. They are harmless to almost everyone and occur naturally in all wines. Yes… I said naturally in all wines.

Sulfites occur as part of the fermentation process, a natural byproduct of yeast metabolism during the conversion of sugar to alcohol. They are completely harmless to over 99% of all people.

In fact, the human body produces sulfites, a whole bunch of it, there’s already about 10 times more sulfites in you on a daily basis than a bottle of wine.

The thought of sulfites being a synthetic chemical added to wine is just a misguided fear. Winemakers might add additional small quantities near the end of fermentation to halt the process, but that’s the natural way to do it, like turning on the lights at the end of a dance party.

It’s also added during bottling as an antioxidant to help prevent spoilage. But, they only use what is needed to complete those stages, usually using amounts far within acceptable boundaries.

Sulfites do two things really well: they bond with oxygen molecules, keeping the wine from oxidizing into vinegar, and they push bacteria out of the wine to keep it from spoiling. Sulfites are like bouncers at the door of a bar, keeping the bad people out without ruining the party.

Sun, Style, and Scenic Coastal Charm Carlsbad Calling

Carlsbad is the kind of place that invites discovery, whether it’s through a haze of salt air on a morning stroll or among the bursts of color in a downtown mural. Spending a weekend here for a recent family “staycation” felt like being let in on a Southern California secret where daily life runs on ocean breezes, vibrant creativity and casual coastal charm.

Our sojourn began with a stroll along tree-lined streets a stone’s throw from the sand in Carlsbad Village (carlsbad-village.com). This vibrant downtown destination is an eclectic patchwork of indie bookstores, unique boutiques, trending surf shops, sidewalk cafes and farm-to-table eateries.

We whiled away a lovely afternoon, skirting souvenir stands in favor of

the Village’s one-of-a-kind boutiques. Twice a year, the Carlsbad Village Street Faire draws thousands, but even on a regular weekend, the streets are dotted with fashion-forward finds, pet shops, and bakeries fragrant with cinnamon and chocolate. The weekly Wednesday Farmers Market turns the

center of town into a carnival of local produce, international street food, and handmade crafts, making it easy to fill a canvas bag with both heirloom tomatoes and quirky vintage finds. This easy blend of the artisanal and the everyday is, I believe, part of the city’s enduring allure.

surprises: geometric puzzles, dreamy seascapes, whimsical animals. The Carlsbad Village Association has made a mission of weaving creativity into everyday life here, hosting music festivals, gallery exhibits and evenings where live performance and culinary pop-ups animate the streets. Walking from mural to mural, we found ourselves lingering not just for the photos, but for the sheer energy of a city that wants you to look, listen, and participate.

With that in mind, we visited The Candle Bar (carlsbadcandlebar.

Of course, no Carlsbad adventure would be complete without exploring the city’s beaches, which run for seven sun-drenched miles beside the town. Early mornings here are made for easy beach walks punctuated by dolphins breaking the surface just offshore, while sunsets against the pale cliff backdrops makes each early evening an event for visitors and locals alike.

If retail therapy satisfies the material soul, Carlsbad’s art scene feeds the imagination. Downtown bursts with murals – public art transforming mundane corners into conversation starters and photo ops. Bold works like Michael Summers’ “Sleeping Tiger” catch sunlight on the Witch Creek Winery, while each block offers fresh

com), which I was certain would be a huge hit with our 17-year-old daughter who loves all things arts and crafts. The air in the shop was rich with subtle layers of eucalyptus, sandalwood and citrus. Long tables lined with glass jars and delicate oils invited us to play perfumer. After browsing a library of fragrances – from crisp ocean-inspired notes to warm, spiced blends – we blended our favorites into custom scents. A friendly host guided us through each step – from mixing the oils to pouring molten wax. The end result? The best kind of keepsake … not just a pretty, personalized memento, but a lasting memory.

ACCOMMODATIONS OF DISTINCTION

As soon as we checked into the Westin Carlsbad Resort & Spa (marriott.com), I felt an immediate shift – the kind of exhale that only happens when the world slows down and you realize you’ve found a true retreat. Perched above the rolling bluffs of coastal Carlsbad, the resort feels both expansive and intimate, with meandering pathways lined in native plants and open-air courtyards that invite you to linger. The Pacific stretched endlessly on the horizon, a constant reminder that nature is always the star here. Whether it was the salty breeze off the ocean or the quiet hum of families settling into vacation mode, something about the property radiated effortless calm.

Our guest room carried that same spirit of balance. Modern but never stark, the design offered just the right mix of clean lines and warm textures. The Westin Heavenly Bed – with its plush layers and crisp linens – was almost too inviting, tempting me to sink in and stay put. A spacious bathroom

with a rainfall shower and thick robes made it easy to slip into spa-like comfort without leaving the room. But it was the view that truly captured me: floor-to-ceiling windows framing the coastline, where sunsets painted the sky in pastels and mornings arrived with a soft, golden light.

True indulgence awaited just steps away at the Ocean Pearl Spa. My indulgent massage mirrored the coast itself – calming yet restorative, with techniques designed to melt away the

The Candle Bar

tension of everyday life. My family, on the other hand, spent time poolside. Think pristine waters framed by swaying palms, plush lounge chairs, private cabanas draped in crisp white curtains and attentive attendants crisscrossing the deck balancing trays of colorful craft cocktails and light bites.

DESTINATION DINING

Breakfast at 20Twenty in the Westin felt like the perfect balance of indulgence and intention. The menu showcased California’s freshest ingredients in elevated morning classics – from fluffy lemon ricotta pancakes with a hint of zest to a farm-fresh omelet layered with vibrant seasonal vegetables. My favorite was the avocado toast, reimagined with thick artisan bread, a drizzle of herb oil, and

Dinner at Cicciotti’s Trattoria was as much about the atmosphere as it was about the food. Situated in the heart of Carlsbad Village along the bustling streets of Carlsbad Village, the trattoria’s open windows invited in the hum of passerby and the salty ocean breeze, setting the stage for a warm, lively evening. Our plates of pasta with vodka was delicious - the silky, tomato-cream sauce clinging to each bite, rich yet balanced, comforting yet elevated.

HERITAGE AND HIDDEN NATURE

a sprinkle of delicate microgreens that turned a staple into something worth writing about.

We wandered into the iconic windmill structure just off the 5 Fwy. for lunch - the Windmill Food Hall is a vibrant gathering place where culinary variety meets casual design (think exposed beams, creative murals, reclaimed wood furnishings and more than a dozen artisan stalls offer everything from wood-fired pizza, Thai street food, and gourmet burgers, to espresso, confectionary desserts, and craft cocktails at the full bar. Literally something for every palate.

Italian turned out to be the theme of our dinners out –our second evening spent at Vigilucci’s Cucina Italiana. While many trattorias rely on rustic charm, Vigilucci’s elevates the experience with a polished, cosmopolitan atmosphere – warm mahogany accents, soaring ceilings, and a lively yet elegant bar scene. On the menu, everything speaks of care: house-made pastas like sumptuous pappardelle with porcini and scallops in a truffle-brandy cream sauce, tender veal scaloppine, wood-fired seafood, and prime steaks.

One of our most memorable detours took us away from the bustle to Leo Carrillo Historic Ranch (carrillo-ranch.org), a serene 27-acre park named for the Hollywood actor and conservationist. Spanish-style adobes dot the landscape, nestled among lush gardens and ancient oaks. Peacocks wander freely, their jewel-toned feathers unfurling in the sun. Here, the pace slackens: families picnic on shaded lawns, children feed docile livestock and interpretive exhibits share stories of Old California and film’s golden age. In the quiet, I took a deep breath and watched a trail of peafowl disappear into the underbrush – an unexpected moment of peace and living history.

Carlsbad didn’t just check every box for a memorable staycation – it reminded me that the magic of travel lies as much in slow, local discovery as in far-flung novelty. Whether you find yourself lingering over farm-

fresh fare, marveling at bold murals or catching the fading light from a State Beach bluff, Carlsbad’s charm is inescapable. Here, every corner is a new invitation to savor the good life seaside, in a city that feels both vibrant and welcoming – a paradise hiding in plain sight on California’s Pacific coast.

AEP- It’s About Saving you Money

Calling all existing Medicare beneficiaries, are you looking to save some money on either your monthly premiums, your co-pays, or your prescription drug co-pays? Then the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is the time for you to make a change to your current plan. All changes made during this time (10/15 – 12/7) go into effect 1/1/26. The biggest way to save money is to see if a Medicare Advantage plan would work for you. If it does meet your needs, then you cancel your Medicare Supplement and Medicare Drug plan for 2026 because the Medicare Advantage plan gives you that type of coverage and financial protection from medical bills. You’re no longer paying a premium for Medicare Supplement and a Medicare RX plan if you decide to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan. These plans in Orange County typically have no or low premiums and are both HMO’s and PPO’s.

Regarding a “standalone” Medicare RX plan. These plans used to not have a name brand drug deductible and now most do. The annual deductible for brand name drugs is increasing up to $615 in 2026. Have your prescriptions changed since you enrolled in your current Medicare RX plan? If they’re expensive medications (the $35-$100 range or higher when you fill them) then it’s time for a review. Also, familiarize yourself with the “Inflation Reduction Act” changes to your prescription drug coverage in 2026. It will lower your out-of-pocket drug costs, which is great news! However, as a result, your monthly Medicare RX plan premium will go up.

The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) ends December 7th. If you’d like to schedule a no cost Medicare options review, contact my agency soon, and either I or a well-qualified Medicare broker from my team will be happy to help you.

Laguna Koi Ponds Living Art

Laguna Koi Ponds has been a local treasure for more than three decades. Since opening in 1989, the specialty water garden and koi supplier has become a destination for homeowners, designers, and pond enthusiasts alike. For co-owners Greg Zuccolotto and Ben Plonski, the heart of their practice is a philosophy rooted in “koi-ichi,” a devotion to koi as the ultimate expressions of natural artistry - the spirit of which is reflected in all aspects of their business.

“Our passion began with a journey to Japan, where each year we hand-pick over 2,000 koi spanning 16 distinct varietie – delicate Gosanke types like Kohaku, Sanke, and Showa – bringing them home to be properly quarantined and nurtured before joining our ponds,” says Greg.

Visitors who step beyond the sunwashed entrance in Laguna Beach are mesmerized by the 35,000-gallon display ponds brimming with vibrant koi – each selected for their beauty, color, and charm – the inspiration for serene backyard getaways.

“It’s hard to describe the feeling until you’ve experienced it,” says Greg. “Koi ponds are more than water features; they are environments designed to bring beauty and tranquility into everyday life. After a

This not only ensures healthy fish but keeps maintenance simple for homeowners like me.

Co-Owner Greg Zuccolotto

rigorous day at work, you can come home and sit by your koi pond and look at the beautiful fish, which are living art pieces. It’s just a very relaxing, Zen moment.”

While some garden ponds emphasize lush vegetation, a true koi pond focuses on the color, movement, and the vitality of the fish themselves. Having said that, Laguna Koi Ponds helps homeowners design ponds tailored to their unique vision. More natural-style ponds that feature boulders, streams, or waterfalls can accommodate a variety of aquatic plants. Water lilies, hyacinths, cannas, and irises are popular choices – and with proper placement, they thrive in Southern California’s climate.

THE ART AND SCIENCE OF KOI PONDS

One of the secrets to a thriving koi pond is location. Laguna Koi Ponds recommends placing ponds in sunny spots that receive at least six hours of sunlight each day, allowing both fish and plants to flourish.

Equally critical is the pond’s filtration system. Laguna Koi Ponds specializes in designing biological filtration systems that mimic natural cycles. By harnessing the nitrogen cycle, waste from the koi is transformed into clean, clear water that flows back through a moving water feature like a waterfall.

When our family toured what would become our “forever” home in San Juan Capistrano 13 years ago, I was intimidated by the backyard koi pond. Having grown up in Hawaii and of Japanese descent, I have an innate love and well-founded fear of keeping the beautiful fish alive and thriving.

Turns out, I needn’t have worried. Once I discovered Laguna Koi Ponds, any anxiety I felt about my lack of knowledge and whatever you call the opposite of a green thumb, immediately dissipated.

Beyond design and construction, Laguna Koi provides ongoing – and excellent – maintenance services. Technicians check water quality, finetune filtration systems, and ensure the environment remains balanced for the health of the koi. Routine debris removal and seasonal adjustments keep ponds looking pristine, while careful inspections catch small issues before they become costly problems.

As I can personally attest, what truly sets Laguna Koi Ponds apart is the decades-long relationships Greg, Ben and their team have nurtured with customers. From first visits, when someone simply wants to wander and marvel, to designing and maintaining living art installations, their goal remains the same: to bring tranquility, beauty, and enduring harmony into people’s lives – one koi at a time.

For more than half a century, Steamatic has been a trusted name in restoration, helping homeowners and businesses recover from life’s most unexpected challenges.

From water and fire damage restoration to mold remediation and deep carpet cleaning, the company’s reputation is built on reliability, expertise and genuine care for its clients.

Owner Alex Keuylian brings both personal experience and a lifelong passion for the trades to the business.

“I’ve been working in this industry and related trades since I was in high school,” says Alex. “I grew up around construction and restoration. Being on job sites with my family, seeing the process of building and repairing, gave me a strong foundation early on. Over time, that exposure turned into a calling.”

That calling evolved into a career defined by hands-on experience, formal training and a deep connection with the community. Today, Keuylian leads Steamatic of Orange County with the same work ethic and attention to detail he learned as a teenager, backed by the brand’s 50-plus years of industry trust.

A Tradition of Quality and Care

Steamatic’s services go far beyond fixing what’s broken. The team specializes in water and fire damage restoration, mold remediation, and comprehensive cleaning services, tackling everything from flood-soaked floors to smoke-stained walls. What sets them apart is a blend of technical excellence and compassionate service.

“We don’t just restore properties — we restore peace of mind,” says Alex. “When someone calls us, they’re usually going through one of the most stressful times of their life. Our job is

not only to get their home or business back to normal, but also to keep them informed, guide them through the process, and take as much of the burden off their shoulders as we can.”

Clients benefit from IICRC-certified technicians, trained to follow the highest industry standards. Whether the job is an emergency flood cleanup in the middle of the night or a long-term mold removal project, Steamatic’s team approaches each case with professionalism, expertise and urgency.

Always Ready, 24/7

Emergencies don’t wait for business hours, and neither does Steamatic. The company offers round-the-clock emergency response, ensuring help is on the way when disaster strikes because “you can’t predict when a pipe will burst or a fire will happen.” That’s why Alex and his team are available 24/7 — because a fast response can make the difference between a small job and major damage.

Steamatic also stands out as an advocate for clients dealing with insurance claims. Many homeowners facing damage are overwhelmed not only by the physical cleanup but also by the maze of paperwork and policy details. Alex and his team work directly with insurers to make sure clients receive the compensation they’re entitled to.

“After a loss, you’re juggling so much — repair decisions, temporary housing, emotional stress,” he says. “We walk our clients through the entire process, including the insurance side of things, so they’re not facing it alone.”

Advanced equipment, continuous technician training and the backing of an internationally recognized brand give clients confidence that the job will be done right the first time And for Alex, it all comes back to the people he and his team serve.

“We see our work as more than just a business transaction,” says Alex. “It’s about helping someone feel safe and comfortable in their home again. If we can lift some of that weight from their shoulders during a difficult time, then we’ve done our job.”

Rodents and gophers might seem like outdoor problems at first glance, but they can wreak serious havoc both inside and outside your home. From chewed electrical wires to destroyed lawns and gardens, these pests are more than just an annoyance — they’re a risk to property and health.

Fortunately, homeowners don’t have to deal with these intruders alone. Shimmy Pest Control, a trusted name in local pest management, offers expert solutions to detect, remove, and prevent rodent and gopher infestations.

For residents and business owners, maintaining a pest-free environment is not just a convenience-it’s a necessity. THE PROBLEM: GNAWING, DIGGING, AND DESTRUCTION

Rats and mice are notorious for sneaking into attics, crawlspaces, and wall voids – chewing through insulation and wires, contaminating food, and multiplying rapidly. Their presence

How Shimmy Pest Control Can Help

isn’t just unsettling; it can pose fire hazards and spread diseases like hantavirus and salmonella.

Meanwhile, outside the home, gophers tunnel beneath lawns and gardens, creating unsightly mounds and damaging roots, irrigation lines, and landscaping. Left unchecked, they can turn a well-manicured yard into a maze of destruction.

“Rodents and gophers are survival experts,” says Shimmy. “They only need a small opening to get inside or a food source to stick around. And once they’re in, they’re hard to get rid of without the right tools and knowledge.”

THE SHIMMY PEST CONTROL SOLUTION

Shimmy Pest Control specializes in safe, effective treatments tailored to each property. His approach is thorough – and it starts with identifying the source of the problem.

For indoor rodent infestations, Shimmy conducts a complete home inspection to locate entry points, nesting areas, and food sources. They then design a customized plan that may include traps, tamper-resistant bait stations, and exclusion work (sealing gaps, cracks, and other potential entrances).

“When it comes to rodents, we don’t just treat the symptom – we go after the root cause,” he explains. “Our goal is long-term prevention, not just temporary relief.”

For gopher issues, Shimmy uses advanced detection tools to track underground activity and apply targeted

treatments that eliminate the pests without harming your lawn or garden. Depending on the severity of the infestation, they may use humane traps, deterrents, or subterranean bait systems.

SAFE FOR FAMILIES, PETS, AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Homeowners with children or pets often hesitate to use pest control services, but Shimmy takes safety seriously. He uses eco-friendly, low-toxicity products whenever possible and always place baits and traps in secure, discreet areas.

“Customer peace of mind is a top priority,” he says. “I always explain our process and make sure everyone in the household feels comfortable with the treatment plan.”

Whether you’re hearing scratching in your attic or seeing tunnels in your lawn, pests won’t go away on their own – and the longer you wait, the worse it can get. With fast response times, personalized service, and proven results, Shimmy Pest Control is ready to help homeowners reclaim their space from rodents and gophers.

Riding the Wave of Innovation

The VersaTraction™ Story and the Rise of Kahuna Grip

Eighteen years ago, on the sun-soaked Orange County beaches where surfers chase the perfect wave, a small team of innovators set out to solve a slippery problem. Today, VersaTraction™ stands as a testament to ingenuity, resilience and the power of a simple idea transformed through years of trial, error and relentless improvement.

FROM SURFBOARDS TO SAFETY: THE EARLY DAYS

VersaTraction’s™ journey began in 2007, but its roots stretch back even further. The company’s original incarnation, Waxless Surfboard Systems Inc., was founded by Eric Deitch and Jason Neu after two years of experimenting with alternative traction solutions for surfboards.

“We manufacture a patented non-slip safety traction that helps prevent you from slipping on wet surfaces,” explains Co-Owner Harris Farber. “We have been in business for 18 years now, started back in 2007 as an alternative to waxing your surfboard. Back then we bonded resin directly to the deck of your board and worked our non-slip engineered process over the top once the resin cured.”

The team’s background in surfing gave them a unique perspective. “We all surfed so we knew how to work on boards, fixing dings and such, but really it was just one genius idea and a lot of trial-and-error,” says Harris. Their early solution was simple but effective: a resin-bonded, non-slip surface that eliminated the need for messy wax.

EVOLUTION THROUGH EXPERIMENTATION

As the team refined their process, they realized the potential for their non-slip technology far beyond surfboards. The tragic loss of co-founder Eric Deitch, affectionately known as “Big Kahuna,” inspired a new direction. After Deitch slipped in his own bathroom, the team recognized the urgent need for safer surfaces in everyday environments.

The innovation of a peel-and-stick product marked a turning point, making their traction technology more accessible and versatile and led to the next natural iteration: Kahuna Grip bathmats.

Kahuna Grip, VersaTraction’s™ flagship bathmat, is more than just a product –it’s a tribute and a symbol of the company’s commitment to safety.

“Our engineered non-abrasive patent process and ability to do custom sizes, graphics and logos is really what sets us apart from your standard bathmat or abrasive safety treads,” says Harris.

In a recent safety feature article, Consumer Reports advised readers to “apply a nonslip floor treatment,” showcasing Kahuna Grip’s No Skidding, Anti-Slip Porcelain Bathtub Treatment. The article suggested bypassing bathtub mats, which could trip you up and opt instead for nonslip stickers for your tub or shower floor like Kahuna Grip Non-Slip Safety Bathtub/Shower Treads.

Kahuna Grip’s unique, non-abrasive surface provides secure footing without the roughness of traditional safety treads. It’s a product born from the surf, but designed for every home, boat or watersport adventure. Made with patented hydro hold material, which contains millions of microscopic surface fractures. When these fractures get wet, they grip feet like little suction cups to prevent slipping. VersaTraction’s™ non-slip properties double when wet and are family safe. The non-abrasive diamond embossed textured surface of VersaTraction™ is also soft to the touch.

VersaTraction’s™ innovative products have gained national recognition over the years: Kahuna Grip Mats have been featured on Good Morning America’s Steals and Deals, CBS Mornings Deals, and the Tamron Hall Show - Tam Fam Deals. Last year, Designing Spaces showcased the versatility of VersaTraction’s™ products, demonstrating their use both inside and outside the home - including inside the bathtub or shower, pool steps, garage floors, outdoor patios, stairs, entryways, walkways, mudrooms, boats, watercraft decks, watersports equipment and more.

From its humble beginnings as a surfboard innovation to its current status as a leader in non-slip safety solutions, VersaTraction’s™ story is one of evolution, passion, and purpose.

With products like Kahuna Grip, VersaTraction™ continues to honor its roots while expanding its impact – one safe step at a time.

Coastal Shades

Discover Premium Designs and Tailored Solutions for Every Room

In interviewing scores of entrepreneurs over the last 20+ years, I’ve learned that sometimes a business owners’ career trajectory is a straight line. For others, finding their true calling might have taken a bit more of a circuitous route. But in virtually every instance, the most successful professionals are those who are passionate about what they do. So much so that their daily responsibilities don’t feel much like work at all.

Such is the case for Cesar Jimenez and his wife, Adria, who initially followed a different path before finding their shared passion for the home improvement industry. Today they own and operate a number of local businesses, including the San Clemente-based Coastal Shades, which specializes in motorized window coverings, blinds, interior and exterior shades, shutters and drapery.

“My previous career had me traveling all over the country selling hardware and software for a telematics company,” says Cesar. “After years of living the traveling-salesman life and missing out on a lot of time with my wife and daughters, I decided to look into other career options.”

Sitting on a park bench on a family vacation in Colorado, watching his kids ice skate, Cesar’s wife turned to him and asked why not start a business there? The very same day they started the search, they found a gentleman selling his window coverings company. When one door closes, a window opens, but not many blow open quite so quickly following the decision to make a life change. They immediately began the purchasing process, and a few short months later moved to the Centennial State to watch their new business flourish.

When deciding to relocate to San Clemente to be closer to his wife’s family, the couple were excited for the opportunity to “be a part of the community for which we have such fond memories.”

Although new to the area, Cesar and Adria bring years of experience to Coastal Shades, the sister company of North County Blinds, a respected name in the window-covering industry in San Diego since 1985.

“Continuing the legacy of excellence set forth by North County Blinds, Coastal Shades brings decades of experience, knowledge, and expertise to every project we undertake,” says Cesar. “Our team of highly skilled professionals are passionate about creating stunning window treatments that perfectly complement any space.”

The hallmarks of Coastal Shades’ service includes top-quality craftsmanship, personalized attention to detail, and a steadfast dedication to ensuring that every customer’s vision is brought to life.

“We take pride in offering a wide range of design options, utilizing the latest materials and technologies to provide our clients with the best solutions for their unique needs,” says Cesar. “Our goal is to make your buying process as simple as possible. And our specialty is offering a customized, bespoke experience where we eliminate the headache. That’s it.” Sounds like a worthy goal to pursue after all.
