Iwas doing a bit of research on word origins recently in helping my son with a high school assignment. I discovered the root “hospes,” which comes from “hostis.” But what was interesting was that the etymology actually branches off into “host,” “guest,” or “stranger.” And gives us the word hospitality.

As defned, hospitality is “the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers.” In giving my son examples of real-life application, I thought of Jay Minor. As the owner of Assisted Living Locators, Jay lives the term hospitality as a daily discipline and practice. Those he serves would likely describe it as life-changing.

In March of this year, Jay purchased and opened Assisted Living Locations, a no-cost (to the client) senior living placement service whereby Jay and his team help those in need navigate the confusing landscape of assisted living and memory care.

"We take a very personal approach to helping our clients, from personally accompanying them on every community they tour to providing trusted resources to aid them in every step of their journey," he says. "We have a long list of specialists that we rec-

ommend for senior real estate transactions, reverse mortgages, moving, downsizing, insurance, healthcare options, insurance needs, hospice care and more."

Doing the hard work of researching, scheduling, and making phone calls is just the tip of the iceberg - the real ob is to ensure that their clients fnd the right place for their loved ones to receive the care they need. Like the textbook defnition of hospitality, Jay's goal is to be a helpful advocate and guide clients through the entire process at no cost to the client.

A Certifed Senior Advisor and Dementia Care Certifed , Jay was formerly a pastor for nearly 25 years and "always loved helping people navigate through life's transitions."

"When I was searching for a new career after transitioning out of the ministry, I remembered watching my parents and my in-laws all go through every stage of senior living, even up through memory care and hospice. It was an incredibly diffcult ourney and I often wished I had someone to guide me and answer questions," says the father of four grown children. "When the opportunity to open a senior living placement agency presented itself, it was a very easy decision. I wanted to give myself to serving my clients who might be going through a diffcult time, and perhaps, give them the support that I wish I had been given when I was on my own journey."

Jay is also a member of the Foundation of Senior Services, a non-proft

organization whose mission is to provide seniors and their families with education, options and resources so they can choose quality care and support that will help preserve their independence for as long as possible.

I understand how diffcult and challenging searching for assisted living can be," says Jay, who lives in Ladera Ranch with his wife Traci. "I want to be your partner to help you fnd the care that your loved ones deserve." An act of kindness next on my list of word origins to look up.

Fall Semester enrollment launches August 28 with courses beginning the week of September 16!

When I was younger, my Mom loved to read me the book “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.” The plot essentially revolves around an ever-growing list of to-do’s that had to be accomplished, all set into motion by the simple act of giving a mouse a cookie. This tale came back to me recently when I purchased a new television at Best Buy.

What was a simple shopping trip ended up being an adult’s version of that circular tale. If you give a grownup a television, they’ll have to measure their wall. When they measure the wall, they’ll realize they may actually have room for a bigger television. When they buy the bigger television, they’ll fnd out they have no idea how to mount it to the wall. When they start mounting it to the wall, they’ll see that the power outlets are all in the wrong

places. When they realize the outlets need to be moved, they’ll call an electrician. (This could go on forever.)

Luckily for clients who have been on the receiving end of ReelTime’s patient, intelligent, and personalized service, the rabbit hole of home automation doesn’t have to swallow you entirely. With the help of their independent certifed Control4 dealer, it’s easy to update your home without upending your entire life.

After all, the true luxury of an integrated entertainment system is really dependent on its ability to deliver seamless entertainment. By placing every control at your fngertips, the team at ReelTime helps homeowners manage everything from how brightly lit your family room is, to your streaming devices - all with a single remote. And best yet? You can control your whole home from the comfort of your couch- even seeing who is at the front door, without ever

leaving your seat. Simple, clean, and uncluttered.

And on the home entertainment front … when you started planning for your ultimate home theater set-up and sound syste , could you fnd the right media cabinetry for your particular space – cabinetry that wouldn’t catch on fre ro the heat o the equipment, or that would simply

look good in the room? Did you understand half of what the televisions, receivers and other devices could do, and did you have anyone to hold your hand to make sure you weren’t overspending for what you wanted?

Big box retailers, the professed champions of value, are happy to sell you any home theater and sound equipment you think you might like, and send you o to fgure it out at home. That’s what they do. And that’s all they do.

If you want the home theater system that you envision, seek the services o ip yers and his tea o e perienced professionals at ReelTime to ta e you ro start to fnish or the home theater or sound system of your dreams.

“Usually there is a part of the job that you fnd you ust can t do y yourself,” says Skip, who has overseen the design and installation of thousands of home theater and sound syste s over the course o 4 plus years in the business. “You get your brand new television home, you’re so excited, then you realize you need to move an outlet or none of the cabinets you can fnd will ft your space

We’re here to make sure you get the equipment that will give you what you want and the system that will work with that equipment, without leaving you to fend for yourself.”

Skip opened the doors at ReelTime in 1983. Today, the technicians and designers that Skip assigns to clients are all ReelTime employees, knowledgeable in all home theater and sound technologies. First, they work closely with you to determine what you’re looking for. Then they custom design every aspect of the project, from wiring to custom-built cabinets, frames, or built-in wall designs. Finally, licensed, in-house contractors install your entertainment system with care and precision.

There are a couple of things that people may not think about when they embark upon the road to their own home entertainment system.

“You need to think about your home theater goals,” says Skip. “You don’t have to do everything at once – you can do it bit by bit – but if you know where you’re going, you’ll save money and when it’s all said and done, you’ll have exactly what you want and what you will actually use. We’re here to help you determine your goals.”

Skip is also an advocate for getting what you’ll use, which is part of the design and planning process.

“You can buy everything you want to, but if you can’t operate it, what’s the point?” he says. “There’s the television, DVD and Blue-ray; there’s the receiver, there’s Apple TV… it’s all great, but how do you get them to work together? We’re big advocates of the universal remote. Not everyone knows how to get the most out of their systems with one powerful remote – they’re not expensive, but the best ones are computer-based. We’ll set that up for you so you’re getting the most out of your custom system.”

It’s easy to assume that personal service is expensive, but a conversation with Skip and the experts at ReelTime is free. Ultimately, in planning your purchases for the right outcome, you’re likely to save money while avoiding chilling setbacks. The only chilling you want to be doing is in front of your fantasy home theater system.

Why Children Should Participate in Extracurricular Activities Freedom in Play:

The old adage “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” still holds true even today. Playtime and extracurricular activities help contribute to a child’s overall development. If we want to raise successful children, it’s important to acknowledge that learning isn’t something that only takes place within the four walls of a classroom. A tremendous amount of learning also happens outside of a classroom setting.

According to Jeanne Huybrechts, Stratford School’s Chief Academic Offcer, the most tangible benefts of getting your child involved in extracurricular activities include teamwork, a sense of belonging, and early skill development that results in cognitive imprinting and muscle memory.

Undertaking extracurricular activities has far-ranging benefts that touch on many aspects of a child’s development. Here are fve advantages of extracurricular activities, demonstrating why you should encourage your child to take on something away from the classroom.

LEARN NEW SKILLS - One of the fundamental benefts of extracurricular activities is that they allow your child to learn something that could

stay with them for a lifetime. Directly, that skill could be the basis of a hobby or passion that enriches their life for many years. Everything from playing sports to learning an instrument could lead to hours spent doing something they truly enjoy.

UNDERSTAND A ROUTINE - Extracurricular activity involve structure and a predictable series of events that help children get on a schedule. The more they get comfortable sticking to a routine, the easier it gets for them to adhere to a schedule of activities both at home and school. And because their expectations are set, anxieties and stress in children are reduced.

BOOST ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE - Education requires solid problem-solving skills, memory, creativity, and critical thinking. To varying degrees, you can fnd an extracurricular activity that has an impact on these areas. Research has been carried out that develops a link between extracurricular participation and better academic performance. In one such study, important academic outcomes like reading, math achievement, and course grades were all found to be positively infuenced by children who engage in extracurricular activities.

BROADER SOCIAL SKILLS - The very nature of many extracurricular activities means that your child will be engaging with other children in a social setting. Away from the classroom, it’s a good opportunity for them to mix with likeminded children in something they all enjoy. This is another key beneft of extracurricular activities: they give children a chance to develop their social skills, meet new friends, and become more confdent communicating in groups.

WELL-ROUNDED INDIVIDUAL

-

Well-rounded children are known to thrive better in life. These are the ones who grow up with more confdence, sense of independence, creativity, and ability to collaborate with others with fewer conficts and behavioral issues. They are also the children who tend to adapt to change easily and handle life’s challenges more effectively.

To help children receive the most benefts from extracurricular activity involvement physically, emotionally, and socially, Huybrechts recommends they participate in the right amount of activity for their age level and abilities: “Exposure is key as it is impossible to predict what children will enjoy and be able to do well so allow kids to try several activities. Insist on completing whatever the original agreement was – a season, a semester, etc. – and then allow them to step away if it’s not what they like. At the same time, I think it’s fair to expect children to eventually commit to one or more extracurricular activities for an extended period. Extracurricular activities can develop into life-long pursuits, even passions, yet that won’t happen until a person has developed a certain level of profciency. Adults who regularly play golf, tennis, or chess well, or participate in a community orchestra, probably developed their passion – not to mention muscle memory – in a related activity as a child. We give our children a gift when we encourage them to stick with an activity that they clearly like for as long as it takes to get good at it – with foundational skill development that makes it easy for them to return to the activity at any time in their lives.”

In addition, there are parents who may be concerned about their child

participating in too many activities outside of school. Diversity in extracurricular activities promotes development as long as the child balances activities with the demands of school and family life. As Huybrechts cites: “Kids have different capacities and activities can be seasonal and consume different amounts of time – so there is no single number. I would aim for a couple and perhaps activities that tap into different capabilities and teach different skills: a soccer team and an after-school “coding” club; violin lessons, a school or community orchestra, or a swim team. The combinations I mention would not be taxing to children (or the parents that drive them to practice and rehearsals) and both include physical activity and a genuine team or ensemble experience.”

When you give your child the chance to participate in school activities, they learn a lot more than just the things that are covered in class. The skills and knowledge they acquire shape their well-being and help round out their holistic development.

Schools and local communities are full of exciting activities that could spark your child’s imagination and capture their attention. Try to read your child’s general interests and consider what they may or may not be interested in taking part in. Then, look to their school or the wider community to fnd an appropriate club for your child. As Huybrechts concludes: “When your child enjoys the activity on a regular basis, looks forward to continued participation, and sees the activity as part of their identity, you can be reasonably assured that the activity is a success.”

Life

Dancing Through Training the Heart and Soul at South Coast Conservatory

In the 1960’s, a man named Roger W. Sperry developed a theory: that the human brain goes about thinking in two very different ways. Having worked in the field of psychobiology for years, he’d noticed that one side of the brain saw the big picture - processing information in an intuitive and simultaneous fashion. The other, putting sequential pieces together like a puzzle, parts making a whole. We all use both sides of the braincomplementing logic with creativity. But ask any dancer, writer, sculptor, or painter and they’ll tell you they’re “right brained.”

Controlling three-dimensional spatial reasoning, creativity, and artistic ability, right brain dominance certainly has given us some of the world’s greatest art forms. And South Coast Conservatory is finding more and more ways to celebrate it.

Founded in 1992, the Conservatory is heading into its 33rd year of operation. Specializing in individual and group dance in classical, contemporary and commercial, they provide programs for kids from age 2-18. Programs to help children grow, programs that train “the heart and soul of every dancer,” says Director + CEO Jena Minnick-Bull.

South Coast Conservatory offers eight separate programs, from PreAcademy to Competitive Dance Teams, a certified acro/aerial arts gym and a dance supplies store.

“We start kids in our ‘Pre-Academy’ program to introduce them to a range of dance styles, such as ballet, tap, jazz, tumbling, hip hop, and song and dance,” says Jena. “Once they grow into the ‘Academy’ program, they receive a more in depth training, also beginning to learn contemporary, break dancing, pilates, lyrical, acting, and pointe.” With one-fifth of South Coast’s kids joining the competitive level of dance, their

program structure is set perfectly to grow with them: accelerated training with elite coaches in either its “Ballet Conservatory” division, or the “Elite Academy” - prepping kids for the commercial world of dance. It isn’t just for kids either: Christina Portillo has been attending the Conservancy for over ten years as an adult, “engaging in various dance styles, performing with the Ballet Conservatory, and even competing with the adult hip hop team: Moms Crew.”

Linking up the left and right brains is an automatic function of the body - synthesizing even to the smallest degree what we are seeing out of our left and right eyes, and putting the picture together as a whole. Because each student learns differently, South Coast has set up a compassionate and individualized teaching philosophy. “We take the time to understand and aid the goals of our students.”

And dance, really, isn’t just about processing information intuitively,

as most might think. The analysis of sequential movements, for example: choreography. A projected kinetic trajectory on an angled plane: leaping. Symmetry, patterning, geometrygroup theory and permutations. Left brain and right brain working together to create beauty, community, and create a passion for learning that will persist for years beyond any single dance class.

Parents learn about passion alongside their children too. Adriana Escobar notes that she loves South Coast Conservatory because it introduced her daughter to such a passion: musical theater. “[The Conservatory] provided her with the place and people she needed to take a chance to dance, sing, and then to act. Today, it’s her passion and she is comfortable on any stage.”

Roger Sperry went on to be awarded the Nobel Prize in 1981 for his work in psychobiology - and certainly, while South Coast is preparing kids for a lifetime of creative, rightbrained pursuits, Jena notes that “all of our graduates go on to pursue many diverse degrees and careers using the lifelong skills our school provided them.”

Abiding Savior Lutheran School & Preschool

Building Christ-Centered Leaders

My husband and I remember our kids’ preschool years. Which will forever be known in our home as the grouping of years when we received advice - solicited and otherwise - from everyone we knew about which school has the best standardized test scores, or the greatest teacher of all time, the coolest playground, the worst cafeteria lunches. While all that is seemingly important, we remember being more concerned with selecting a school that would combine curricular learning with foundational development for our kids’ bodies and spirits as well. It’s a particular feat to emerge from university well educated to be sure, but what good is it really to gain the world and lose your soul?

Luckily for parents of school-aged children in South OC, it’s not necessary to spend long hours searching for a program that combines a culture of mission with a developmental approach in teaching (whereby students learn through play, movement and music) and an elementary school experience that follows along

with California State Standards and benchmarks to guide their teaching through mainstream curriculums.

Voted best faith-based school and preschool in Orange County, Abiding Savior Lutheran School takes very seriously the Biblical command to “train up a child in the way they should go, for when they are old they will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22). But what sets its campus apart from every other Preschool - 8th in the county? Parents and students would say it’s because Abiding Savior’s administration and teachers “bring [their] hearts to work.”

teaching staff is absolutely the best. They give so much of themselves to the families of Abiding Savior. They know each and every student in a very special way. They take into account their learning styles and if they are going through something that needs their attention.”

Emphasizing a growth mindset built on solid academic instruction and preparation for high school and beyond is key, built on a foundation of learning with the goal of “building Christ-Centered leaders” through an engaging curriculum, empowering social development and enriching service activities. Small class sizes leads to more individualized attention.

“Our preschool and elementary school share the same mission statement: Joyfully and intentionally make and nurture disciples who make disciples,” says Ms. Lucas. “We do that by loving, serving and connecting. We have weekly chapel services, daily religion classes and our Bibilcal Worldview is woven throughout our curriculum.

“Because of our culture, the comment that we hear most often when people walk onto campus is that they feel so welcome,” says Principal Donna Lucas. “When a student enrolls here they are more than just a student, they are a part of our family. They are important and special because they are a child of God. I believe that our

Service is a cornerstone of Abiding Savior’s mission. Students and staff collect offerings for many nonpro t organizations throughout the region, including NEGU, Disaster Relief Funds and other church outreach programs. Over 300 toys are collected each year for Spark of Love, over 500 boxes are packages for Operation Christmas Child and the school’s annual food drive bene ts South County Outreach and Abiding Savior’s own pantry - amazing generosity for a school of just under 300 students.

How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer?

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.

Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certifed dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.

ACTINIC KERATOSIS

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.

SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.

MELANOMA

Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.

WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW

1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.

2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.

3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling

A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?

B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?

C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?

D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.

One of the biggest transactions the average person will make in their lifetime is the sale of their home. The number of annual home sales hit an all-time high a few years ago in 2017, totaling around seven million. Since then, numbers have dropped for various reasons, but brokers, lenders, and real estate agents are still seeing transactions in the millions each year. The average listing agent sees those numbers and wonders what size their slice of the pie could be. Glen Hughes sees the same statistic, but measures in relationships.

SYC Listing is a new division of Hughes Realty Group, which has been around for the last 20 years. Glen himself has been licensed for the last 27, and specializing in all aspects of residential real estate since he received his broker license 17 years ago. So why change the game, if the rules are the same as they were two decades ago?

“Most agents out there work for a broker that takes a percentage of their commission and has to follow their rules, which gives them very little fexibility,” he says. “I wanted to receive 100% of the commission so that I could give part of it back to my clients.”

Set Your Commission

You Set the Sale Price, Why Shouldn’t You Also Set the Commission You’ll Pay?
You tell me what you feel is a fair commission to pay in order to sell your home. We come to an agreement, and you save thousands, and in some cases, tens of thousands in commission. It is truly that simple."

If you caught yourself thinking what an interesting business practice that was, you’re absolutely correct. “In my opinion, it’s all about the client and making sure they have a great experience. I don’t stop helping folks just because they sold their home - our relationship continues long after the transaction is closed.”

ith fexibility, len can ensure that he tailors his approach to the client’s needs. And setting the terms together ensures agreement on what you feel a reasonable commission is.

"I see people that struggle every day and work hard to make ends meet. Usually, their home equity is their largest asset, and when they go to liquidate that asset, they are charged

extremely high fees (commissions) in order to do this.

For example, typical sales agents always state that the commission is ONLY 5%. So let's look at that in detail: if your home is worth $800,000, then the commissions alone are $40,000. That is a 5% fee.

Let’s look at it another way: if you owe $500,000 on that $800,00 home, you have $300,000 in equity. The $40,000 is coming out of your $300,000, and that equates to 13.33% of your equity!!! That is absurd!!!

In my opinion, this is simply not fair, and this is why I am offering this concept to anyone that wishes to sell their home.

My solution to this is simple: You tell me what you feel is a fair commission to pay in order to sell your home. We come to an agreement, and you save thousands, and in some cases, tens of thousands in commission. It is truly that simple."

“You aren’t left with a handshake and a brusque ‘you’re welcome’,” says Glen. “Many of my clients are now good friends, because we’ve gotten to know each other very well throughout the transaction. It is a great feeling to know you’ve helped someone so much through what might be one of the biggest transactions of their lives.”

The commission you pay is discounted, NOT the service you receive!

Ask a SOMM

A good sommelier is a helper, a guide to nding the best wine for your food and experience. For this month’s installment, we again approached South County-based sommelier Micah Sampson for a bit of education about the wine/food pairings, whether the size and shape of the glass makes a difference and whether wine should be decanted before its served.

Q Does white really go with fsh/seafood and red with red meat or is there some overlap?

A When in doubt the white with seafood and red with red meat is a good rule ut o course, there s defnitely some overlap here when getting into the details. There are some fantastic lighter bodied red wines out there that can easily be paired with fsh and other sea oods o e o y favorites are Pinot Noir, Beaujolais, and Grenache, each of them have a light body with very light tannins, won t overpower the delicate fsh And for red meats you can easily pour a full bodied white wine that has high acidity, think California Chardonnays, white Rhone blends, Rieslings and Chenin Blancs. All of these have nice body that can stand up to high fat red meats, and nice acidity that can shine through some of the more robust seasonings and marinades that are used to cook them.

Q Does the shape/size of the wine glass make a difference?

A This is one of those topics that I wish people took more seriously! In short, yes, the shape and size of the glass makes a huge difference! Wine glasses are designed with very specifc shapes and si es to help deliver wine aromas to your nose. If search “red wine glass” and “white wine glass” you’ll notice red wine glasses are much bigger and more bowl shaped, that’s because there are vapors coming off the wine as the alcohol slowly evaporates, those vapors are flled with co pounds that help you taste the wine. White wines a typically chilled and won’t give off as much aromas, therefore the glass doesn’t need to be as large. Another reason for the smaller shape for whites is they don’t need need to aerate like reds do, less surface area reduces aeration and keeps the wine cooler. Reds on the other hand love to aerate and

Sommelier Micah Sampson

therefore need all the surface area to slowly oxidize (in a good way). The bowl-shaped narrower opening at the top of the glass does two things that are both very important: 1) It helps trap the aromas into a smaller area to help you small them. Think about how uch ore di fcult it would e to smell wine in a cereal bowl with an 8 inch opening than a wine glass with a 2 inch opening. 2) It helps keep the wine in the glass when you swirl the heck out of it, which you should do! I love swirling wine, it introduces oxygen (good oxidation) into the wine and gets all those great aromas swirling around the glass for you to smell!

Q Should I decant wine before I drink it?

A Decanting can do wonders for your wine, but it isn’t always necessary. You should have a nice decanter at home if you’re serious about enjoying some great red wines (don’t worry about decanting white wines), and that decanter should have a nice wide bottom that creates a ton of surface area when the wine is poured in, and a narrow top that keeps too much air from getting introduced and makes it easy to pour a glass. The types of red wines you’re decanting are usually full bodied reds that usually have a some age on them (like 5-10+ years), not those cheap red blends you’re buying for $8.99 at the market. The idea behind decanting is you’re introducing oxygen into the wine and a chemical change is happening, a lot of those volatile compounds (bad aromas) are evaporating off and the harsher tannins are softening up a bit, which allows you to en oy the wine ore o, if you have a 2010 Barolo or a 2015 Napa Cabernet, let those bad boys decant for 30-60 minutes, maybe take some small sips and smells during that time so you can see how the wine changes.

San Clemente Village Helping Older Adults in Our Community Live Their Best Lives

I think most folks are familiar with the old adage “it takes a village,” I’ve certainly found it to be true when I was a mom of young kids and now as the child of an aging parent. Perhaps one of the most incredible examples emerged out of the

Boston area in the early 2000s when an online retirement service organization let its residents, near and far, come together to age gracefully, surrounded by friends.

Over the last quarter century, the model has expanded westward and caught the attention of Jessica Reiter-Flax, now Director of San Clemente Village in South Orange County.

Part of the Village Movement California, San Clemente Village started in 2014 as a hope that “neighbors would help neighbors.” Two years later, it is currently the only ull service not or proft service illage in Orange County and Jessica hopes to “continue our geographic reach to include more South County communities in the coming years.”

The 100% volunteer driven membership organization provides services for local seniors ranging from transportation to appointments, grocery shopping, social outings to happy hours and help around the house. The average volunteer is 65 years young - looking for ways to give back.

Village Board Member Barry Mulkay, 74, and his wife Peggy, 72, both village volunteers and social members since 2018, originally joined the Village to “be of service to our community.”

Married for 53 years with two sons and three wonderful grandchildren, the couple “enjoy meeting new people and learning about everyone’s life and experiences, backgrounds and families and have made lifelong friendships through our participation.”

“We really enjoy helping our members in taking care of their many needs, including doctor and dental visits, help around the home and grocery shopping,” says Barry. “It feels really great seeing how appreciative the members are of our help.”

Village volunteers and social members Owen and Darlene Martin echo the Mulkay’s sentiment.

After retiring from a 35-year career in the mortgage industry, Owen joined The Village as a social member in last July.

“After retiring I just wanted to sit back & relax,” he says. “My wife was also retired but kept herself busy as a volunteer for the village. She would come home from taking someone to an appointment or attending an activity with the village and would tell me about the fun time she had getting to know other people. It sounded great and I was ready to get involved. One of the greatest enefts o oining was getting y social li e going again.”

Barry and Peggy Mulkay

Things like Sunday brunch or a movie matinee may not seem like they make a huge difference in the overall cognitive, physical, or psychological success rates of older adults (aged 87, on average). But more than 70% of seniors want to remain in their homes as they age “and the Village helps them do just that. They can socialize easily, which reduces isolation, maintaining a state of continuous physical and mental well-being.”

and Mingle

Members like 91-years-young Claudette Miller has made “many strong, lasting friendships” since joining San Clemente Village in 2019 and credits the organization with allowing her to maintain her independence and dignity. The mother of four, grandmother of 12 and great-grandmother of 24 shares that she “used to take cabs everywhere until I joined the Village. Not only is it much more cost e ective, the true eneft co es ro the time I spend with volunteers during my rides to and from my appointments and in participating in the various activities and events. The village keeps me young, active and social.”

One of more than 40 such organizations throughout the state, San Clemente Village helps older adults in the community live their best lives, and its volunteers are always ready to welcome new members into the fold. After all, with a full roster of wellness initiatives, grocery store, technology assistance and even fall risk reduction preparedness, it really does take a village.

Finding Relief: HOW KETAMINE INFUSION THERAPY OFFERS HOPE FOR CHRONIC PAIN

Living with chronic pain can be an isolating and exhausting experience, particularly when conventional treatments fail to provide adequate relief.

For individuals facing persistent pain after surgery or unresponsive to traditional medications, the prospect of fnding effective relief may seem elusive. However, a promising solution is emerging in the form of ketamine infusion therapy, offering newfound hope and renewed vitality to those in need.

Chronic pain, defned as pain persisting beyond the normal time of healing, affects millions worldwide and presents a signifcant challenge to healthcare providers. Post-surgical pain, in particular, can become chronic in some patients, despite interventions aimed at managing it. Similarly, some individuals experience ongoing pain due to conditions such as fbromyalgia or neuropathy, where conventional treatments provide inadequate relief. In these cases, ketamine’s unique mechanism of action makes it a valuable therapeutic option. Unlike traditional analgesics that primarily target pain receptors, ketamine operates through various pathways within the central nervous system. Its ability to modulate glutamatergic neurotransmission, primarily through N-methyl-Daspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonism, plays a crucial role in its analgesic effects. By blocking these receptors, ketamine interrupts the amplifcation of pain signals, thereby diminishing the perception of pain.

Furthermore, ketamine exhibits anti-infammatory properties, reducing infammation-induced pain, which is particularly benefcial for conditions involving neuropathic pain or central sensitization. This multifaceted action distinguishes ketamine from conventional analgesics,

making it effective for a broader spectrum of chronic pain disorders.

In clinical settings, ketamine infusion therapy has emerged as a promising strategy for managing chronic pain resistant to other treatments. During infusion sessions, patients receive carefully titrated doses of ketamine intravenously, allowing for precise control of its effects. The duration and frequency of infusions vary depending on individual response and pain severity.

Research and clinical experience have demonstrated ketamine’s effcacy across diverse chronic pain conditions. Studies have shown signifcant reductions in pain scores and improvements in quality of life following ketamine infusion therapy. Moreover, the effects of ketamine can endure beyond the infusion period, providing prolonged relief for some patients. So rather than taking medications daily that are merely a bandaid for one’s symptoms, ketamine offers the potential for long term relief without needing daily medications.

One notable advantage of ketamine therapy is its rapid onset of action, with many patients experiencing pain relief within minutes to hours of the infusion. This rapid relief can be transformative for individuals suffering from debilitating pain, offering hope and restoring functionality. Additionally, ketamine’s favorable safety profle, particularly when administered by trained professionals in controlled settings, further supports its use in chronic pain management. However, ketamine therapy is not without limitations and potential side effects.

Dr. Justin Yanuck, Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician and Board Certified Pain Medicine Physician and Dr. Tanya Dall, Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician

Adverse effects such as temporary dissociation and changes in blood pressure and heart rate can occur, particularly at higher doses. Therefore, close monitoring and careful dose titration are essential to minimize risks and ensure patient safety.

Despite these considerations, ketamine represents a valuable addition to the armamentarium for chronic pain management, offering relief for patients who have exhausted other options. Its unique mechanism of action, rapid onset of action, and potential for prolonged beneft make it a compelling choice for individuals seeking relief from persistent pain.

In conclusion, ketamine infusion therapy holds promise for those suffering from chronic pain resistant to conventional treatments, including post-surgical pain and neuropathic conditions. By targeting multiple pathways involved in pain processing, ketamine offers effective relief and improves quality of life for many patients. As research continues to elucidate its mechanisms and refne therapeutic protocols, ketamine stands as a beacon of hope for those living with chronic pain.

BUSINESS SHOWCASE

GORILLA GRASSTM & MIRAGE PGA Putting Greens

Owning your own home is a huge part of the American dream – but it’s not just owning a home … it’s the pride of ownership that extends to the care you put into the way the property looks – inside and out.

The front lawn is one of the first things about your home that people see, and a tidy, lush-looking lawn not only adds to your home’s curb appeal, but also adds to the overall aesthetic appeal of your neighborhood. But “lush” might be quite a stretch to achieve when conserving water. That is, unless you call GORILLA GRASSTM – providers of the highest quality synthetic lawn grass for both residential and commercial customers.

For our part, my husband and I were tired of looking at a barren patch of dirt in our backyard and I hesitate to call what was struggling to grow there “grass.” We decided to install a synthetic lawn and called on GORILLA GRASSTM owner Denis Weber and his professional team to try to make the area look better and have it be a more useable space.

Serving Orange County since 1998, Denis has continually grown the company year after year – a testament to the quality of his product and service. GORILLA GRASSTM provides two types of grass: Synthetic Lawngrass and MIRAGE Professional Putting Greens. Synthetic grass can help you cut down significantly on your water usage and judging by the results we achieved, you don’t have to sacrifice beauty for cost-savings.

“Synthetic or artificial lawn grass is so sophisticated today, that is very closely imitates real live grass,” says Denis. “In general, by switch-

ing to artificial lawn, the savings in water consumption amount to about 48 gallons per square foot, per year!”

When we spoke with Denis, it was immediately evident that he is extremely proud of his product, but we were equally impressed by personal testimonials of his many happy customers like Mike and Shannon Wells who raved “Denis has done an incredible job with an incredible product. The kids play constantly on the grass, and we will be adding a new family member (a puppy) without any worries. We cannot say enough about how happy we are with the product as well as with Denis and his team.”

Customer Dr. Dante Toriello agrees with the Wells’ assessment and adds that the work was so good, his lawn had become “uniform, maintenance free and beautiful.” His American dream had been fulfilled, and in Dante’s words, thanks to GORILLA GRASSTM, his home had now become “the showplace in the neighborhood.”

According to Denis, the ways in which GORILLA GRASSTM simulates real grass are numerous: “its weight (double the average at 143oz per square yard), its high density, its extra softness and plushness, its resiliency, its height (up to 2.4”, whereas most lawns are 1 1/2” to 1 3/4”)”, and its special diamond-shaped fibers - which help make GORILLA GRASSTM more resilient and more realistic. GORILLA GRASSTM is just like real grass, only Much Better!!

As a special note, not only does GORILLA GRASS professional team install the “absolute finest” synthetic lawn, they also professionally install cement, pavers and bricks and offer tree trimming services.

EMERGENCY ANIMAL HOSPITAL

In writing this editorial, I recalled a friend once asking me to explain the premise of a book called “All Creatures Great and Small.”

It’s about giving veterinary care to animals like you’d give pediatric care to children in your community - with grace, and love, and an incredible amount of passion. James Herriot’s example was set long ago

through the tales of extraordinary and ordinary circumstance, but the level of service, specialization, and care lives on in clinics like Healing Hearts Emergency Animal Hospital in Laguna Hills.

Since opening its doors last August, the team of compassionate professionals here have provided the highest level of emergency medicine to dogs, cats, avian patients and even most exotics. Dr. Berschauer, the CEO and founding veterinarian behind Healing Hearts, strives to put together the best option for treatment for each patient on an individual level.

“We do this by working with each pet owner to determine what the optimal plan looks like for the care of your beloved pet, says tephanie un, o fce

manager. “With a fully equipped ICU, advanced monitoring systems, oxygen cage, full in-house lab, we’re ready to handle almost any emergency.”

In the rare instance that your pet needs treatment outside of Healing Hearts’ capabilities, they’ll help you coordinate the transfer and care to an outside facility. “We’re not kind or compassionate within our four walls alone - the nature of community is that it exists beyond our front door and we’re willing to go to any lengths to ensure your pet’s needs are met, wherever they end up.”

Dr. Berschauer and his staff’s warmth and dedication to caring for our furry (and sometimes not so furry) family members truly sets them apart. Each ca e ro a di erent edical feld, but their love of animals brought them to where they are today. Ensuring that we can bring back the “oldschool feel” of veterinary medicine “where your animal is assessed and treated from head-to-toe with stateo the art e uip ent co es frst For all creatures, great and small.

How to Thrive at Home: The Art of Choosing Incontinence Products for Bladder Leaks

Whether aging in place at home, or residing in a senior living community, older adults living with incontinence face unique health challenges.

The risk of pressure sores, UTI’s, and falls are all unfortunately common problems that occur in these individuals. However, seniors can greatly reduce their risk of these challenges, and subsequently, reduce their risk of ending up in the hospital by choosing high quality incontinence products. Below are two features to look for in an incontinence product.

1. Fully Breathable Products.

Fully breathable products that allow the skin to breathe will reduce the risk of pressure sores.

Without breathability, the person wearing the product may get skin irritations and skin breakdowns. Not only can these skin irritations become very painful, but the worry, and ancillary negative effects (such as possible hospital admission, decreased quality of life, time, and money) are staggering.

In addition to wearing a fully breathable product, choosing skin care products and washcloths that protect

elderly thinning skin are equally as important. Transparent barrier creams and “no water needed” cleansing creams, for example, can aid in reducing risk of irritation.

2. Super Absorbent Products.

Getting a good night’s sleep is important. Super absorbent products are key in helping older adults who have bladder leaks sleep through the night. “Restorative sleep”, the term meaning 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep that allows a person to go through the 4-5 sleep cycles, has many proven benefts, including cell regeneration, tissue healing, hormone regulation, and being more alert in the morning.

If a person is wearing a product that keeps them dry longer, and is made from soft comfortable materials, the likelihood of them staying in bed at night is greater. If they stay in bed, they reduce their risk of falling during the night, whereas others wearing a less absorbent product may wake up in the night, wet and uncomfortable. In turn, that person gets up out of bed groggy and thus a fall may happen. Falls are a leading contributor to hospital admissions. Choosing high quality products helps reduce the risk!

Super absorbent products may also reduce the risk of urinary tract infections in older adults if they are wearing a high-quality product with a double absorbent core that locks

in urine while decreasing bacterial growth. A double absorbent core helps to wick moisture away from the skin quickly, thus keeping people dry and comfortable, while also reducing urine odor.

If you or a loved one are challenged with incontinence, it is recommended that you inquire about high quality products from a specialized provider, such as Mountain View Services. Their customer support staff is well versed about quality products rather than a consumer buying adult briefs or pull-ups in a “big box” store. Their staff can also help guide consumers to proper size & ft, appropriate absorbency levels, styles, etc., which are all factors in promoting confdence, dignity, and overall well-being for people living with incontinence so they can enjoy everyday life activities. Remember to compare overall value versus cost as this is critical to choosing wisely!

Medicare Recalculating Star Ratings of Medicare Advantage Plans

The federal government plans to redo 2024 quality ratings of Medicare Advantage plans, something that will deliver hundreds of millions in additional bonus payments to insurers next year.

The decision by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services was announced in June. CMS said it would recalculate all of the 2024 quality ratings, but only apply the results if a plan’s ratings go up under the new methodology. If a plan’s ratings go down, the change won’t be implemented CMS said in a guidance document.

By paving the way for higher payments, the CMS move provides a win for Medicare insurers at a time when their business is under pressure from rising healthcare costs.

At issue are the 2024-star ratings of privately run Medicare Advantage health plans, which CMS ranks on a scale of one to five stars. Higher quality by CMS standards equals more stars. A CMS spokesperson said the agency is committed to accurately measuring the quality of care that Medicare plans provide. CMS noted that it will update the 2024-star rating information for all Medicare Advantage plans on Medicare.gov in the coming weeks. They also said that plans with star ratings that were increased in 2024 due to the discovery of their error will be able to resubmit their 2025 plan benefits to them with any positive changes due to the additional money that they now know they’ll receive. $10

According to the Wall Street Journal, A federal udge frst ruled in a case regarding SCAN Healthplan that the Medicare agency had erred in implementing certain technical changes for this year’s quality ratings, which affect bonus payments to the insurance company in 2025. The judge ordered the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to recalculate SCAN’s ratings, SCAN reported this

recalculation will increase its 2025 Medicare payments by about $250 million. Also receiving bonuses from this correction are Humana and nited Healthgroup.
