Is It Time For Assisted Living? What to Notice During the Holidays
By Jay Minor
The holidays often bring families together and sometimes those moments of togetherness reveal subtle (or not so subtle!) changes in the people we love.
If you find yourself wondering whether your parent or spouse is still safe and thriving at home, you’re not alone. Many families begin to recognize the signs during the holidays that it may be time to start exploring assisted living or memory care options.
Signs It May Be Time for More Support
1. Changes in personal hygiene or appearance. Notice if clothes are unwashed, grooming habits have slipped, or there’s an unusual body odor.
2. Unpaid bills or unopened mail. These may point to trouble managing daily responsibilities or finances.
3. Weight loss or an empty refrigerator. Forgetting meals or losing interest in cooking can indicate declining memory or motivation.
4. Increased confusion or forgetfulness. Repeating stories, missing appointments, or forgetting familiar names and routines may signal cognitive decline.
5. Mobility or balance issues. Frequent falls, unsteady walking, or difficulty getting up from a chair can increase safety risks.
6. Withdrawal or mood changes. If your loved one seems anxious, irritable, or unusually quiet, it could be depression or social isolation.
7. Household neglect. Clutter, dirty dishes, or an unkempt home may reflect difficulty keeping up with daily living tasks.
8. Caregiver burnout. For spouses caring for a partner, exhaustion or health decline in the caregiver is an important warning sign too.
Questions to Ask Yourself (and Your Loved One)
1. Is your loved one safe living alone day to day?
2. Are medications being taken consistently and correctly?
3. Is driving still safe? Or have there been close calls?
4. Would an emergency (like a fall) be handled quickly if it happened?
5. Is loneliness or isolation taking a toll on their emotional health?
6. Are you, as a family member, losing sleep or peace of mind worrying about them?
7. Would some extra help (meals, housekeeping, or personal care) make life easier or more joyful for them?
These questions aren’t about taking away independence. They’re about preserving dignity, safety, and quality of life.
You Don’t Have to Figure It Out Alone
The process of finding the right assisted living or memory care option can feel overwhelming. That’s where I can help. As a Certified Senior Advisor® and local owner of Assisted Living Locators – South Orange County, I work alongside families at no cost to you to understand your loved one’s needs, tour appropriate communities, and make confident, informed decisions.
If your holiday visit leaves you concerned or uncertain, consider that an opportunity rather than a crisis. This is often the moment when awareness begins, and that awareness gives you time. Time to ex-
plore, to have gentle conversations, and to plan thoughtfully rather than react urgently.
Recognizing changes early allows you to look into options while your loved one can still be part of the decision-making process. It means you can tour communities together, ask questions, and find the right fit without the stress of a hospital discharge or emergency move.
Taking action now doesn’t mean you’re rushing a decision. It means you’re being proactive, loving, and wise. By starting the conversation during the holidays, you can turn a moment of concern into the beginning of a well-supported plan for the future.

Decades of Giving. Generations of Impact.
“It means so much to us to ensure that our friends, neighbors and community can get the very best care without having to travel far from home.” — Allen Chao
When the UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center opened in Irvine in July 2024, it dramatically expanded access to leading-edge therapies and clinical trials for cancer patients across Orange County and beyond. Since then, tens of thousands have been treated, and countless more have been impacted by transformative research happening at the new facility, the flagship center in Orange and satellite locations throughout the region.
The center’s immeasurable impact on cancer care stems from the visionary support of the Chao family. Their generosity to UCI Health spans multiple generations and tops tens of millions of dollars.
The Chao family takes cancer personally. It is the leading cause of death for Asian Americans, and in 1999, Allen Chao, Ph.D., M.S., developed stomach cancer and received lifesaving care from UCI Health. More than 25 years later, he remains an active leader of the family’s philanthropy, along with his three siblings and their spouses.
Allen and Lee Chao, June and Richard Chao, Agnes and J.K. Kung, and Phylis and David Hsia say their parents instilled in them the importance of giving back to the community.
From the day it opened, the UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center in Irvine brought new diagnostic technology to Southern California, including advanced photon-counting computed tomography, which provides higher-resolution imaging in a fraction of the time required for traditional CT scans.
That same month, the cancer center celebrated a milestone in its Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapy Program, which treats cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma with infusions of healthy blood stem cells. Supported by the Chao family’s generosity, the program has now provided more than 250 transplants.
More leading-edge therapies are on the horizon. UC Irvine researchers recently launched a clinical trial exploring a novel approach to potentially extend the benefit of CAR T-cell therapy, traditionally used for blood cancers, to patients with solid tumors. It is one of more than 500 active cancer clinical trials at the UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Sora Tanjasiri, associate director of cancer health disparities and community engagement, is helping recruit 20,000 Americans of various Asian ethnic groups for a $12.5 million National Cancer Institute study aimed at better understanding cancer disparities and risk factors. UC Irvine’s Sunmin Lee, Sc.D., leads that study while also heading a federally funded project to improve colorectal cancer screening among Asian Americans – the group with the lowest screening rate in the U.S. Meanwhile, Jacqueline Kim, Ph.D., of the UC Irvine School of Medicine, is conducting an NCI-funded study to improve quality of life for Mandarinand Vietnamese-speaking metastatic cancer patients, survivors and their caregivers.
The Chao family’s legacy continues to fuel innovative cancer care and research, uplift underrepresented communities and inspire future generations to give in ways that transform lives. Collectively, this work is grounded in the hope that certain ethnic groups will no longer carry a heavier burden of cancer.

A Community of Care: Cristina Allen’s Holistic Vision for Hospice in Orange County
By Jody Robinson
When most people hear the word hospice, they think of medical care in life’s final stages.
But for Cristina Allen, founder of Community Care Hospice Orange County, hospice is something deeper, richer, and far more expansive: it’s about honoring the entire journey of each patient while creating a true community of compassion that embraces families, caregivers, veterans, students, and neighbors alike.
Cristina’s approach challenges the traditional idea of hospice as a clinical service. Instead, she sees it as an opportunity to build connections— between patients and their loved ones, between volunteers and veterans, between students and mentors, and even between seniors and a four-legged visitor named Enzo, her beloved dog who has become a star in his own right at memory care centers and board-and-care facilities. Together, Cristina and her team are transforming the face of end-of-life care in Orange County with a mission rooted in empathy, presence, and holistic healing.
BUILDING A “COMMUNITY OF CARE”
Cristina’s inspiration for founding Community Care Hospice OC grew out of her conviction that patients and families deserve more than a “cookie-cutter” approach. “My dream,” she explains, “was to offer greater resources that expand to assemble a true community of care. Hospice, at its heart, is about valuing every person’s sacred journey with tranquility and empathy. But it also means reaching outward: supporting the families,
caregivers, and loved ones who walk alongside our patients.”
That vision has shaped the organization into something unique in the region. Beyond the traditional medical services of pain management and symptom control, Community Care Hospice OC integrates emotional, spiritual, and social support into every plan of care. Each family receives a personalized program designed by a multidisciplinary team—nurses, physicians, social workers, chaplains, and trained volunteers—ensuring that the approach is never one-size-fits-all. Holistic therapies are also offered at no cost, giving patients and their loved ones comfort that extends beyond medicine. “We care for the whole person—spiritually, emotionally, socially, and medically,” she says. “End-of-life care is far more than simply managing physical pain; it is about healing hearts, deepening connections, and creating lasting moments of profound meaning.”
REACHING INTO THE COMMUNITY
One of the most distinctive hallmarks of Community Care Hospice OC is its commitment to community engagement. Cristina and her team regularly participate in events like the Veteran Stand Down, offering services, resources, and companionship to local veterans. They also host gatherings ranging from block parties to wellness screenings that include free blood pressure checks, turning what could
be simple outreach into opportunities for building meaningful connections across neighborhoods and generations.
For Cristina, these efforts aren’t just goodwill—they are essential. “We want to be present not just at the bedside, but in the community itself,” she explains. “It’s about creating bridges, fostering trust, and making sure that people know we are here as neighbors, not just as providers.”
That sense of partnership extends to local institutions as well. Community Care Hospice OC collaborates with colleges, including UC Irvine’s Public Health undergraduate and graduate programs, offering students internships that provide hands-on experience in compassionate care. Watching these students grow in skill and empathy is deeply rewarding for Cristina and her staff. In addition, chaplain interns extend spiritual support not only within board-and-care facilities and hospitals, but also to police departments, veterans’ groups, and
other organizations. This kind of outreach creates safe spaces for conversations that might otherwise remain unspoken—especially for veterans, many of whom carry long-silent stories.
ENZO: THE FOUR-LEGGED VOLUNTEER
Perhaps no ambassador embodies the spirit of Community Care Hospice OC more than Enzo, Cristina’s loyal dog. Enzo regularly visits senior memory centers and board-and-care facilities, where his wagging tail and gentle presence light up the faces of those he meets. For seniors living with dementia or Alzheimer’s, the simple joy of stroking Enzo’s fur or receiving his unconditional affection can stir memories, soothe agitation, and bring moments of peace.
“He has this way of opening hearts instantly,” Cristina shares. “Patients who may be withdrawn or struggling to connect often brighten when Enzo
walks in. He gives comfort in ways that words cannot.”
Enzo’s visits reflect the hospice’s holistic philosophy: healing is not only medical, but emotional and spiritual. Just as the team offers complementary therapies and personalized care, Enzo offers the kind of companionship that reminds patients they are still part of a community that values and cherishes them.
RAISING THE BAR FOR HOSPICE CARE
Under Cristina’s leadership, Community Care Hospice OC has established itself as a pioneer in reimagining hospice as a ministry of the heart. Her team’s work is about more than just providing services—it’s about leaving a legacy of love for each patient and their family.
She puts it simply: “With each patient we serve, each family we comfort, and each veteran or neighbor we engage,
End-of-life care is far more than simply managing physical pain; it is about healing hearts, deepening connections, and creating lasting moments of profound meaning.
we are not simply providing hospice care. We are building a community of compassion, one life at a time.”
In a healthcare landscape that often feels rushed, transactional, or impersonal, Cristina’s vision stands as a reminder of what true caregiving can look like. It is personal. It is holistic. It is deeply human. And whether through the hands of a compassionate nurse, the attentive ear of a chaplain, the mentorship of a student intern, or the joyful presence of Enzo, it is care that speaks to the soul.
A LEGACY OF LOVE
For families navigating the uncertainty of end-of-life, Community Care Hospice OC offers not just comfort, but hope—hope for meaningful moments, for deeper connections, and for journeys guided by compassion rather than fear. Cristina’s passion has created more than an agency; it has created a living, breathing network of people, programs, and even pets, all bound by a shared commitment to serve.
At the heart of it all is a simple but profound truth: hospice is not about endings. In Cristina Allen’s hands, it is about community, presence, and love that endures beyond a lifetime.

“You can live a good life with Parkinson’s!”
Jan’s life was going as planned, married with 2 children and living the Orange County dream. This changed one September in 2008 when Jan went to her Neurologist for a tremor in her right leg.
It had been bothering her for 6 months, but took 6 years, to get her diagnosis. Finally in 2014 Jan went to see Dr. Ken Martinez, a neurologist and movement disorder specialist. The diagnosis, Parkinsons!
Instead of curling up and admitting defeat, Jan decided to fight her diagnosis with the same determination and persistence that had made her a successful public affairs liaison for the utility company.
Parkinson’s affects over 1 million people in the US with 90,000 new diagnosis every single year. It is caused by a loss of dopamine in the brain which plays a key role in movement. Symptoms often begin before diagnosis including acting out dreams, loss of smell or constipation. Seeing a Movement Disorder Neurologist is the next step in helping manage Parkinsons. There is no known cure, but there are treatments that can significantly improve Parkinsons symptoms while helping patients regain their independence and quality of life.
In Feb 2022 Jan had Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Therapy to treat the symptoms that were impacting her daily routine. Jan had the typical shaking that most people identify
with Parkinson’s, but she also had a number of other symptoms including stiffness (rigidity), slowness of movement (bradykinesia) and freezing of gait (getting stuck). To help treat all the symptoms, Jan was recommended Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) by Dr. Martinez and his Nurse Practitioner, Rebekah Torres.
Together Dr. Martinez and Rebekah walked Jan through the entire DBS process including introducing her to the local Abbott DBS rep who helped answer her specific device questions about this cutting-edge technology. “Abbott DBS is where I felt at home.”
Jan’s journey then brought her to see Dr. Devin Binder, a stereotactic Neurosurgeon that specializes in DBS. Dr. Binder has been doing DBS since the early 200’s and started UCI’s DBS program in 2007. He then started Memorial Care Orange Coast’s DBS program in 2011 where he still is today. Dr. Binder has done over 800 DBS surgeries and says “the most rewarding part of DBS is the remarkable and immediate improvement in quality of life that we can give patients with neuromodulation (elimination or reduction of tremor, rigidity, and/or bradykinesia).”
After Jan’s DBS therapy was turned on, she immediately noticed the dif-
ference. Her shaking had completely disappeared and she could now pursue all the normal activities that had been challenging, including basic things like tying her shoes and walking. Her stiffness and slow movements had also vanished. “I didn’t anticipate that I’d be able to reduce my Parkinson’s medication by 2/3 and that my tremor would completely stop!”
According to Dr. Martinez “DBS is best when, despite an optimal medication regimen, those medications do not control tremor or have side effects. This could include movement fluctuations, “wearing-off” of the medication or unpredictable timing of the medication’s efficacy”
“During Jan’s first 3 month’s she had 90% resolution of her tremor and was able to simplify and reduce her medication regimen. DBS should be introduced from Day 1 and considered about 3-5 years after diagnosis” says Dr. Martinez.
“Parkinson’s did not turn out to be bad news. I am having so much fun with new people I’ve met and the care I’ve been given. If you must have a disease Parkinson’s isn’t a prison sentence. You meet a whole new family/ community. You can live a good life with Parkinson’s!”

Finding the right care for your loved one can feel daunting, but you don’t have to do it alone. Since 2012, we’ve been helping seniors in Laguna Woods Village and the surrounding areas to stay safe, happy, and independent in the comfort of their own homes.

The Silent Lifesaver
Why Bloodwork is Essential for Your Pet’s Health
By Dr. Leslie Gentry
As a veterinarian, I often tell my clients that pets are masters of disguise. Unlike us, dogs and cats don’t complain about headaches, fatigue, or that nagging ache that won’t go away. By instinct, they mask discomfort – a survival trait passed down from their wild ancestors. This means that by the time an animal shows visible signs of illness, the condition may already be advanced. That’s where blood work comes in: a window into your pet’s inner world, often revealing what the eye can’t see.
Routine blood work is one of the most powerful tools we have in preventive care. Think of it as your pet’s annual “wellness dashboard.” A simple blood panel can provide an astonishing amount of information – about or-
gan function, blood cell counts, electrolyte balance, and even underlying infections. It’s the kind of information that lets us detect issues early, sometimes months or even years before symptoms surface.
For example, a middle-aged cat might seem perfectly healthy at home –jumping on countertops, chasing toys, and demanding breakfast at 5 a.m. But a routine blood test could reveal subtle changes in kidney function, one of the most common health concerns in aging cats. Catching kidney disease early allows us to slow its progression dramatically, giving that cat many more happy, comfortable years.
Similarly, in dogs, routine blood work can uncover early liver disease, thyroid imbalances, or even diabetes long before a pet’s appetite changes or weight loss becomes obvious. In
some cases, blood tests reveal silent but serious conditions such as anemia or clotting disorders that could otherwise go unnoticed until a crisis occurs. Early intervention not only extends a pet’s life, but often reduces the cost and intensity of treatment down the road.
Blood work isn’t just for seniors or pets with health concerns. Establishing a healthy baseline when your dog or cat is young is just as important. These numbers serve as a personal reference point, helping us recognize subtle changes as your pet ages. Just as in human medicine, trends matter. A small shift in kidney or liver values may not be alarming on its own, but when compared to previous results, it can be the first sign of trouble brewing.
I often remind pet parents that preventive care is about more than vaccinations and dental cleanings – it’s about giving us the chance to stay a step ahead of disease. Blood work is like listening to your pet’s internal voice, a voice that would otherwise remain silent.
So, the next time your veterinarian recommends a blood panel – even if your pet seems perfectly healthy –know that it’s not just a box to check. It’s an investment in peace of mind, in early detection, and most importantly, in more years of tail wags, purrs, and unconditional love.
After all, the greatest gift we can give our pets is not just a good life, but a long and healthy one.

Peace of Mind in Advance: The Gift of Preplanning
By Ann Stemmer and Denise Landon
For many families, one of the most compassionate gifts a loved one can leave behind isn’t found in a will or an heirloom—it’s the peace of knowing everything has been thoughtfully planned. Preplanning a funeral may not be an easy topic to approach, but it’s one of the most meaningful acts of love and foresight you can offer your family.
What Is Preplanning?
A preplanned funeral allows you to record your final wishes in advance and lock in today’s prices for future services. It’s both a financial safeguard and an emotional gift—ensuring that your loved ones can focus on remembering your life, rather than navigating difficult decisions during a time of grief.
As many families have discovered, taking this simple step can lessen the stress families face. Adult children often describe their parents’ preplanning as “the last most thoughtful gift they ever gave.”
Why It Matters Now
Since the 1930s, the cost of dying has risen 25% faster than the cost of living—a surprising statistic that underscores the value of preparing ahead. When a loved one passes, important choices must be made quickly, often before insurance benefits are released and while emotions run high. Cemetery and Funeral expenses are
due in full before any memorial services take place, and life insurance payouts typically don’t arrive for several weeks.
Preplanning eliminates the financial uncertainty, ensuring every detail is organized and prepaid at today’s rates.
Preplanning vs. Burial Insurance
While both preplanning and burial insurance address end-of-life costs, they differ in approach. Burial insurance provides a lump sum for your family to allocate as needed. A prepaid funeral plan, on the other hand, goes further—it specifies your choices in advance, locks in current prices, and guarantees that your wishes will be honored down to the details.
Think of it as not just providing the funds—but providing the plan.
How to Begin: Five Simple Steps
1. Reflect on Your Wishes
Would you prefer a traditional service, a celebration of life, or a simple cremation followed by ash scattering? Taking time to reflect helps clarify your wishes and priorities. Many families find it helpful to use a Personal Planning Guide to organize and record their decisions. We are happy to provide a complimentary Personal Planning Guide.
2. Have the Conversation
Discussing end-of-life preferences can feel daunting, but it’s one of the most important conversations you’ll ever have. Couples often plan together, but it’s normal for one partner to be more ready than the other. The key is openness—acknowledging that preplanning is a gesture of love and peace of mind.
3. Meet with your Preplanning Advisors
We offer complimentary consultations to help you explore options and understand the process. With more than 70 partner locations throughout the region, including funeral homes, cemeteries, and cremation providers, support is always close to home.
4. Review and Fund Your Plan
Once your arrangements are outlined—covering everything from service details to payment preferences—you’ll review and sign your contract. Coverage begins after first installment payment or if paid in full with a single payment.
5. Share with Your Loved Ones
This final step brings everything full circle. Let your family know your plan is complete, and provide them with a copy for safekeeping. While your funeral provider will retain the original, your loved ones will rest easier knowing that everything has already been arranged.
Preplanning isn’t just about preparing for the inevitable—it’s about empowering your loved ones to celebrate your life without the weight of uncertainty. It’s a quiet but powerful expression of care that endures long after you’re gone.

There
are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.
ACTINIC KERATOSIS
An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered precancerous because, if left alone, it could develop into skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed to the sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.
SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly, and some forms are tender to the touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.
BASAL CELL CARCINOMA
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.
MELANOMA
Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. It is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year, and it is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.
WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW
1. Everyone needs to perform a selfskin exam once a month.
2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms, soles, under your nails, and places most have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check—it could save your life.
3. What to look for: ABCDEs and the Ugly Duckling
A - Asymmetry: If you draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?
B - Border: Is there a nice, crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?
C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?
D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6 mm, i.e., the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.
E - Evolution: Has it changed?
F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?
4. Everyone needs a full-body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

Holiday Sparkle Laguna Beach Brothers Turn Local Landmarks into Iconic Ornaments
By Jody Robinson
In Laguna Beach, where ocean breezes mingle with the scent of pine during the holidays, a pair of teenage brothers has quietly been making waves in the world of holiday décor. Jackson and Sawyer Collins, founders of Iconic Ornaments, are redefining the way Southern Californians decorate their trees – one glass-blown landmark at a time.
The Collins brothers started their company in 2021, when most teens were worrying about driver’s permits and school dances. Instead, they were sketching designs and learning the craft of glass ornaments. “We’ve been in business for five years now,” says Jackson. “From the start, we wanted to specialize in glass-blown, handcrafted Christmas ornaments that celebrate Orange County landmarks.”
Their inspiration came from home –quite literally – from the family Christmas tree. “Our parents brought back a Leaning Tower of Pisa ornament from Italy years ago,” Jackson recalls. “It’s always been one of our favorites because of the handcrafted element and hand-painted details. We realized how meaningful it was to have a piece of travel, memory, and artistry wrapped into one ornament – and that’s what sparked the idea for Iconic Ornaments.”
The brothers launched with just a handful of designs, and over the years, the collection has blossomed
into a kaleidoscope of coastal nostalgia. Their ornaments feature everything from the Laguna Beach lifeguard tower to the Balboa Duffy Boat, each piece infused with artistry and storytelling. Fan favorites also include the Balboa Pavilion, the Laguna Beach Sawdust Festival, the Laguna Beach Trolley and the Balboa Dad’s Original Frozen Banana ornament.
What sets their work apart is the hyper-local focus. “Apart from us, there aren’t really any companies that specialize in Orange County-specific landmarks,” says Jackson. “We place a lot of importance on creating products that are cherished and that really represent our community.” That authenticity has struck a chord not just with Laguna locals but with families all over Orange County who are eager to hang a little piece of home on their tree.
Jackson (L) and Sawyer
The process of choosing which landmarks make the cut is no small feat. “Honestly, it’s one of the hardest parts every single year,” Jackson admits
with a laugh. “We’ll start by brainstorming a wide list of landmarks and then narrow it down by asking friends and family for input. We also love getting suggestions from customers and retail vendors – it’s always fun to hear what people want to see next.”
The result is a collection that feels both personal and universal, a reflection of Southern California’s coastal charm with a touch of holiday magic. Each ornament is designed to be more than decoration – it’s a keepsake. “Our hope is that families will pull our ornaments out each year and feel that same sense of memory and joy that we do with our own family’s collection,” says Jackson.
From their Laguna Beach garage to holiday trees across Orange County, the Collins brothers have shown that tradition can start young and grow into something lasting. With youthful energy, a sense of community, and a whole lot of holiday spirit, Iconic Ornaments is well on its way to becoming a new local holiday tradition.
Cozy Flavors, Fresh Twists
Fall Arrives at Lazy Dog Restaurant
By Jody Robinson
Lazy Dog Restaurants’ newest fall menu is a celebration of creative comfort, layered with the kind of hometown warmth that instantly makes a weeknight out or a family meal feel extra special. Walking into their wood-accented dining room, it’s easy to see why the brand has become a staple across California and beyond – the Rocky Mountain-inspired décor wraps around the space, inviting diners to settle in and savor the season’s best flavors, whether enjoying handcrafted entrées or a leisurely weekend brunch.
After browsing the fall menu, it’s clear that Lazy Dog’s culinary team has embraced innovation while staying true to their welcoming spirit. “We created our fall menu to surprise and delight in different ways,” founder Chris Simms explains, and that ethos shines through every dish. There’s something satisfying about seeing approachable price points alongside inventive plates. The restaurant’s philosophy to offer lighter bites for some or hearty mains for others makes it the kind of place where any mood or occasion fits right in.
To start, the Small Plates beckon with comforting flavors and a playful touch. The Chef’s Chips come piled high, tossed with a proprietary seasoning and served alongside chipotle ranch – perfect for snacking as you settle in and relax. The French Onion Pastry Puffs steal the show with garlic-herb cheese, caramelized onions, and melted Swiss, all tucked into flaky pastry. These bites, paired with au jus for dipping, feel as celebratory as they are decadent.
For those who love layered flavors, the Tikka Masala Meatballs offer chicken meatballs bathed in spiced tomato curry, a bright cucumber drizzle, and micro cilantro. The Roasted Red Pepper Hummus, paired with crisp veggies and garlic parmesan chips, was the ideal counterpart for anyone craving lighter, plant-forward indulgence. For seafood lovers, the Smoked Trout Dip brought the taste of autumn rivers, with crispy capers, tangy pickled onions, and everything bagel potato chips elevating the spread.
It’s not just the appetizers that make Lazy Dog a standout for fall. The Pretzel-Crusted Pork Schnitzel, a tender boneless chop with apple cider slaw and warm bacon potato salad, brings the festive flavors of Oktoberfest to the table, while the Steak + Veggie Kebabs – with tender beef, zesty salad, tzatziki, and a cool hummus accent – offer a vibrant, shareable main course perfect for nights where conversation lingers. The showstopper, though, may be the Pan-Roasted Chilean Sea Bass: moist and flaky, its
cauliflower mash and lemon caper cream a study in soothing contrasts.
No meal would be complete without Lazy Dog’s signature sweet. Campfire Cookies, packed with chocolate chips, caramel, pretzels, and sea salt, arrive warm and gooey – a taste of nostalgia and fireside celebration. To sip, the fall drink lineup is equally inventive: from the tart, foamy Pomegranate Sour Fauxtini and the spicy Strawberry Jalapeño Mockarita, to the indulgent Peanut Butter Cold Brew Martini, the beverage menu is designed to surprise and please.
With brunch on weekends, daily happy hour, and even TV dinners to grab for home, Lazy Dog’s fall menu is a revival of warmth and wonder, perfect for savoring the season with a little extra flair.

There’s something indescribably festive about a day trip for holiday shopping to Desert Hills Premium Outlets—a tradition I sparked a few years ago with my daughter and grew even more meaningful this year with Grandma joining the fun. Each of us represents a different era of style: Grandma, ever the connoisseur of haute luxury, my daughter chasing every viral teen trend, while I land somewhere between, drawn to unique finds and gifting inspiration.
We recently set out from San Juan Capistrano for an easy 1.5-hour Sunday morning drive to arrive just as the shops were opening for the day. With its palm-shaded paths and designer-laden boutiques, Desert Hills is California’s gold standard for glamour and discovery – 180 stores stretching as far as the eye can see.
As we navigated the dazzling rows, my daughter darted straight for Crocs, where she tried on the colorful, comfortable and lightweight clogs in myriad of pastel shades, giddy with the thought of matching her friends at school. For me, there was Hurley – racks of California cool and technical fabrics chasing both comfort and statement - perfect for gifting my teenage son and nephews.
Holiday Magic
A Three-Generation Tradition at Desert Hills Premium Outlets
Grandma, of course, glided towards the world exclusives. The American luxury fashion house Thom Browne is widely recognized for redefining modern tailoring. Unsurprisingly, Grandma was drawn to the tactile heft of its classically cut jackets for the fashion-forward gentlemen on her list. In Maison Margiela, we wandered amid haute couture-inspired artisanal collections and ready-to-wear collections for men and women, glittering fine jewelry, gorgeous sculptural handbags, statement rings and artful accessories - all unique pieces sure to please the fashionistas in our family tree. Thinking of friends who lean toward lazy weekend mornings, we couldn’t believe the selection at the SKIMS boutique – racks of buttery-soft loungewear, sleek shapewear, and cult-favorite bodysuits all marked at outlet prices. It felt like scoring a little luxury without the guilt.
Golden Goose, with its gallery of hand-distressed sneakers, became an impromptu family fitting room; my daughter, thrilled, tried on a star-speckled pair destined to be the centerpiece of any teen’s winter wardrobe. The contemporary wom-
en’s clothier ARITZIA offers a curated selection of elevated basics and trend-driven pieces that can be effortlessly mixed.
Stopping in the largest Valentino outlet location in the United States, the Italian luxury fashion house was the grand finale of our excursion (think velvet clutches, jewel-toned heels, and rich leather) where high quality craftsmanship is key – each stitch a work of art. For me, the experience itself felt like a gift, watching two generations explore their joy amidst luxury and warmth.
Three generations, one tradition, woven together by sparkling finds and sensory memories that would linger well past New Year’s. Desert Hills Premium Outlets isn’t just a shopping destination – it’s the stage for an unforgettable family tradition.

Ask a SOMM
By Jody Robinson
Q Does white really go with fish/seafood and red with red meat or is there some overlap?
A When in doubt the white with seafood and red with red meat is a good rule. But of course, there’s definitely some overlap here when getting into the details. There are some fantastic lighter bodied red wines out there that can easily be paired with fish and other seafoods. Some of my favorites are Pinot Noir, Beaujolais, and Grenache, each of them have a light body with very light tannins, won’t overpower the delicate fish. And for red meats you can easily pour a full bodied white wine that has high acidity, think California Chardonnays, white Rhone blends, Rieslings and Chenin Blancs. All of these have nice body that can stand up to high fat red meats, and nice acidity that can shine through some of the more robust seasonings and marinades that are used to cook them.
Q Does the shape/size of the wine glass make a difference?
A This is one of those topics that I wish people took more seriously! In short, yes, the shape and size of the glass makes a huge difference! Wine glasses are designed with very specific shapes and sizes to help deliver wine aromas to your nose. If search “red wine glass” and “white wine glass” you’ll notice red wine glasses are much bigger and more bowl shaped, that’s because there are vapors coming off the wine as the alcohol slowly evaporates, those vapors are filled with compounds that help you taste the wine. White wines a typically chilled and won’t give off as much aromas, therefore the glass doesn’t need to be as large. Another reason for the smaller shape for whites is they don’t need need to aerate like reds do, less surface area reduces aeration and keeps the wine cooler. Reds on the other hand love to aerate and
therefore need all the surface area to slowly oxidize (in a good way). The bowl-shaped narrower opening at the top of the glass does two things that are both very important: 1) It helps trap the aromas into a smaller area to help you small them. Think about how much more difficult it would be to smell wine in a cereal bowl with an 8 inch opening than a wine glass with a 2 inch opening. 2) It helps keep the wine in the glass when you swirl the heck out of it, which you should do! I love swirling wine, it introduces oxygen (good oxidation) into the wine and gets all those great aromas swirling around the glass for you to smell!
Q Should I decant wine before I drink it?
A good sommelier is a helper, a guide to finding the best wine for your food and experience. For this month’s installment, we again approached South County-based sommelier Micah Sampson for a bit of education about the wine/food pairings, whether the size and shape of the glass makes a difference and whether wine should be decanted before its served. Micah is happy to connect personally His
A Decanting can do wonders for your wine, but it isn’t always necessary. You should have a nice decanter at home if you’re serious about enjoying some great red wines (don’t worry about decanting white wines), and that decanter should have a nice wide bottom that creates a ton of surface area when the wine is poured in, and a narrow top that keeps too much air from getting introduced and makes it easy to pour a glass. The types of red wines you’re decanting are usually full bodied reds that usually have a some age on them (like 5-10+ years), not those cheap red blends you’re buying for $8.99 at the market. The idea behind decanting is you’re introducing oxygen into the wine and a chemical change is happening, a lot of those volatile compounds (bad aromas) are evaporating off and the harsher tannins are softening up a bit, which allows you to enjoy the wine more. So, if you have a 2010 Barolo or a 2015 Napa Cabernet, let those bad boys decant for 30-60 minutes, maybe take some small sips and smells during that time so you can see how the wine changes.

AEP- It’s About Saving You $$
By Stephanie Frisch
Calling all existing Medicare Beneficiaries, are you looking to save some money on either your monthly premiums, your copays, your prescription drug co-pays or perhaps a trifecta and you get all three? Then contact my agency soon to review your Medicare plan options.
The biggest way to save money is to see if a Medicare Advantage plan would work for you. If it does work, you cancel your Medicare Supplement and Medicare Drug plan for 2026 because a Medicare Advantage plan gives you that type of coverage and financial protection from costly medical bills. These types of plans in Orange County typically have little to no premium. The savings can be life changing to some people, especially married couples over the age of 70. Medicare supplement plan premiums go up as you get older in addition to the annual premium increases related to the cost of medical care for their enrollees (Every year Medicare Part A pays less, so the supplement to Medicare has to pay more)
Most people on a “standalone” Medicare prescription drug plan don’t realize when their monthly premium increases in the new year because if they’re taking social security the premium is typically being directly deducted from their social security check. Insurance companies have increases in their monthly RX plan premium and their annual deductible. Have your
prescriptions changed since you enrolled in your current Medicare drug plan? If they’re expensive medications (in the $35-$100 range when you fill them) then it’s time for a review. Also, familiarize yourself with the “Inflation Reduction Act” changes to your prescription drug coverage in 2026. It will lower your out-of-pocket drug costs, which is great news! However, as a result, your monthly Medicare RX plan premium will go up.
Also, while the Annual Enrollment Period is NOT the time to change your Medicare supplement plan (The months around your birthday month are, it’s called
the “birthday rule”) it could be a time to get educated about what other carrier’s premiums are for the Medicare supplement plan that you’re on. Medicare Supplement plans are all standardized by the government. A Plan F, Plan G or Plan N, for example, are all the same, no matter what insurance company you use. However, some insurance carriers have upped their game, adding additional benefits such as routine vision and hearing, acupuncture and more to their Medicare supplement plan for a more “value added” experience. The additional premium for these extra benefits is minimal.
The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) begins October 15th and ends December 7th. If you’d like to schedule a no cost Medicare options review, contact my agency soon, and either I or a well-qualified Medicare broker from my team will be happy to help you.

A Fresh Perspective on Mental Wellness at
In a time when conversations around mental health are more vital than ever, Ocean View Adult Psychiatric Health Facility has become a trusted sanctuary for Southern California residents seeking compassionate, personalized care.
Since opening its doors in 2012, Ocean View has specialized in stabilizing acute psychiatric symptoms for adults 18 and older—placing choice, privacy, and heartfelt care at the center of everything they do. With 40 voluntary beds—most in private rooms—patients are empowered to begin their healing journey on their own terms.
“What really sets us apart is the compassion our team brings to every interaction,” shares Carla DiCandia, MPA. “Time and again, our patients tell us,
‘I actually feel cared for.’ That, to me, is the highest compliment we could receive.”
At Ocean View, the focus is on identifying and treating symptoms such as depression, anxiety, mania, delusions, and suicidal ideation before they become more severe. The average stay of seven to 14 days allows patients to decompress, regain confidence, and work daily with a psychiatrist, internist, and social worker—ensuring true, holistic care.

Ocean View continues to grow, with plans to add 40 secure-care beds and launch a Forensic Mental Health Rehabilitation Center—the first of its kind locally—serving justice-involved individuals in need of structured recovery. Additional new facilities in Colton will extend care to both adolescents and adults.
From partnering with Saddleback MemorialCare to host mental wellness classes for seniors to providing Medicare-covered care for older adults, Ocean View stands as a beacon of hope. “With the right care,” says Carla, “everyone deserves the chance to live at their full potential.”

Regarding a “standalone” Medicare RX plan. These plans used to not have a name brand drug deductible and now most do. The annual deductible for brand name drugs is increasing up to $615 in 2026. Have your prescriptions changed since you enrolled in your current Medicare RX plan? If they’re expensive medications (the $35-$100 range or higher when you fill them) then it’s time for a review. Also, familiarize yourself with the “Inflation Reduction Act” changes to your prescription drug coverage in 2026. It will lower your out-of-pocket drug costs, which is great news! However, as a result, your monthly Medicare RX plan premium will go up.
The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) ends December 7th. If you’d like to schedule a no cost Medicare options review, contact my agency soon, and either I or a well-qualified Medicare broker from my team will be happy to help you.

Caring with Heart: How Home Helpers of Orange Coast Brings Compassion and Expertise Home
By Jody Robinson
For many families, finding the right in-home care solution for a loved one can feel overwhelming—a maze of questions, emotions, and uncertainty. But for Dwight Brown, owner of Home Helpers of Orange Coast, providing clarity, compassion, and care is not just a business—it’s a calling.
Home Helpers has been a trusted name in in-home caregiving nationwide for more than 25 years, with Dwight’s locally owned and operated Orange County office serving the community for the past 15. Under his leadership, the agency has earned a reputation for its personalized approach, deep expertise, and heartfelt dedication to helping families navigate every stage of the caregiving journey.
“What really sets us apart,” Dwight shares, “is the combination of ex-
perience, compassion, and customer service that drives everything we do.”
That commitment begins with his team. Home Helpers of Orange Coast boasts one of the largest caregiver networks in the region, allowing Dwight and his staff to make thoughtful matches between clients and caregivers—pairings that feel more like family than formal arrangements. “Every person has unique needs, personalities, and preferences,” Dwight explains. “Having a large, diverse team gives us the flexibility to find that perfect fit.”
tor, working with respected organizations like CareMore and SCAN Health Plan—companies known for their innovative approach to senior wellness. “Both were amazing places that taught me the importance of outcomes and the value of compassion in healthcare,” he recalls. “But what I saw was a huge gap. Seniors wanted to stay at home as they aged, yet there weren’t enough resources—or enough people—ready to guide families through their options.”
That realization inspired Dwight to start Home Helpers of Orange Coast. His goal: to build a home care agency grounded in service, empathy, and genuine human connection. “We approach caregiving as a customer service endeavor,” he says. “It’s not just about providing care—it’s about making people feel safe, supported, and happy.”
Beyond the personal touch, Home Helpers stands out for its seasoned experience in handling the complexities that often come with caregiving. From coordinating with insurance companies and the helping veterans get caregiving through the VA to assisting fiduciaries and extended families, Dwight’s team brings a level of professionalism and understanding that only comes with years in the field. “We’ve seen every type of care imaginable,” he says. “And because of that, we know how to make the process easier for everyone involved.”
Dwight’s journey into senior care began years ago in the healthcare sec-
It’s this philosophy that keeps Dwight personally involved in every aspect of the business—even answering calls from families who simply need advice. “About 75 percent of my calls are from people just looking for information,” he says with a smile. “I had one conversation where I explained VA caregiving benefits to a daughter caring for her father. When she realized he might qualify for full coverage, she said, ‘I wish I’d called you two years ago.’ Moments like that remind me why I do this.”
For Dwight Brown, Home Helpers isn’t just about in-home care—it’s about community care. It’s about showing up with heart, experience, and the promise that no family has to navigate this journey alone.
