To date, we have established priorities aligned with our school’s mission and goals for students, created a return-to-school plan, and are building out support systems for several potential contingency plans. Here’s a preview of our plans:

Our commitment to the health and safety of our school community is paramount. We will abide by all state and local statues, heed the advice of health organizations, notably the CDC, and maintain a clean and healthy environment within our schools. Additionally, we will implement several strategies to encourage behaviors known to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

QUALITY ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

Depending on the final state and local statues for this school year wherein shelter-in-place or reduced-occupancy mandates are imposed, we will be ready to transition to one of several teaching and learning models, among them (1) a period of distance learning or (2) a hybrid of distance and on-campus learning (necessary, for example, if classroom capacity limits are imposed). Again, an uninterrupted traditional school year is our fervent hope however, every imaginable alternative scenario is being explored.

The school has committed to investing in computer hardware and software upgrades to aid in any hybrid accommodation we may face, and also at the request of our teachers, who, during the distance-learning period, learned and developed creative uses for instructional technol-

In advisory meetings and in academic classes, we incorporated elements that supported social-emotional health. During our months apart, social-emotional learning was more relevant than ever.

As communities begin to open back up, it is important to be mindful of potential messages around COVID-19 that may be confusing to children. Introducing proactive, age-appropriate discussions about how school might look different when they start the new school year are important topics in which to engage and develop as information evolves. This continued focus around what we do know about the virus and sharing the things that are within our control can help build confidence, and a level of comfort, in our children.

And, as we begin to plan for this upcoming school year, we are still driven by the mission and vision that attracted us to teaching in the first place, and we are reinvigorated by the creativity and inventiveness unleashed in response to extraordinarily challenging circumstances. We will begin the school year grateful for the opportunity to teach and to learn as we move onward to an excellent future!

The I.R.S. Has Enhanced the 2020 RMD Waivers Investors may be eligible to “undo” certain retirement account withdrawals before September.

In March, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act became law.

I

t was designed to help Americans impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.1

The new law offered investors a financial break. It gave people the option to skip required minimum distributions (RMDs) from traditional Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) and 401(k)-style plans in 2020. (Original owners of Roth IRAs never have to take RMDs from those accounts.)2,3

a replacement for real-life advice, so make sure to consult your tax legal and accounting professionals before modifying your RMD strategy.

taken from January 1 to June 30 may be fully or partly restored without penalty, and the deadline for doing so has been extended to August 31.3

Some investors were left wanting.

People who took some or all of their 2020 RMDs in January were initially prohibited from putting that money back – but lawmakers helped amend that rule.

The fine print about this is important, especially if you take your RMD in increments or have an inherited IRA in your financial picture.

The Internal Revenue Service (I.R.S.) recently expanded the terms of 2020 RMD relief. Now, 2020 RMDs

Do you usually spread your IRA RMD out across the year? Then you may have a chance to restore the RMD amount to your IRA in the same way. In 2020, the I.R.S. is characterizing each redeposit of RMD assets as a tax-free rollover. Normally, you can only make this type of rollover once every 12 months, but the I.R.S. is lifting that restriction for 2020.3 Do you have an inherited IRA? In June, the I.R.S. issued guidance stating that the 2020 RMD waivers also apply to inherited traditional and Roth IRAs. RMDs from inherited IRAs taken in the first half of 2020 may be fully or partly redeposited with no penalties by August 31. The 10-year rule to empty an inherited IRA is still in place, but if an IRA owner passes away in 2020, then the 10-year drawdown of that IRA begins in 2021.2,3 A surviving spouse of the IRA owner, disabled or chronically ill individuals, individuals who are not more than 10 years younger than the IRA owner, and child of the IRA owner who has not reached the age of majority may

have other minimum distribution requirements.

Incidentally, RMDs are still required this year from traditional pension plans (sometimes called defined benefit plans). The CARES Act does not permit such RMDs to be redeposited this year.3 A rule about early distributions from retirement accounts has also been relaxed. In 2020, account owners younger than 59½ have a chance to take a distribution of up to $100,000 from their retirement plan or IRA without the 10% early withdrawal penalty that normally applies.

The withdrawn amount is still taxable, though.4 The CARES Act is a 335-page law, and some of its provisions and passages remain open to interpretation.

y the time my friend’s grandmother passed away at 92, she had fallen six times. Two of those falls resulted in broken bones - once, her hip. Horrifying, to find oneself in that position. It is safe to say that I know nothing about pipes. I know a little about drywall, and some about framing; my husband has his general contractor’s license so I’ve picked up a few nuggets of knowledge over the years - albeit in conversation, not in practice.

I have family who live on the East Coast, where pipes seem to burst with some degree of frequency in the winter, but that is the extent of my experience via six degrees of separation. Since our family moved into our “new” home in San Juan Capistrano a few years ago, we have since become something of an expert on experts: those who do and don’t know anything about pipes.

There are a bunch of things I can now catch you up on: leaks, sprinkler lines, lead testing. But truly, all you need to know is this: In many cases, ePIPE can have your pipes restored the same day without displacing you from your home.

SEPTEMBER IS PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS MONTH FOUR FACTS TO PREVENT ADVANCED PROSTATE CANCER Robert Pugach, MD

This month is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. As always, I remind men that it is time to schedule their annual prostate cancer screening exam.

P

lease keep reading to learn why it is important to detect prostate cancer early and why it is a myth that prostate cancer is a slow growing tumor that never causes serious health problems. It’s more than a myth – it’s downright wrong! As we have already passed the midpoint of the year, we have seen more advanced, incurable prostate cancers at Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center and Western States HIFU than ever before.

FACT #1: Once prostate cancer gets out of the prostate it is not curable.

This year, up to 32,000 men will die from prostate cancer and another 50,000 will have either locally advanced or metastatic cancer. Those are frightening statistics and we want to do what we can to prevent our patients from becoming one of those statistics.

FACT #2: You can prevent advanced cancer by getting screened for it every single year. I recommend that most men start their prostate cancer screening at age 45, or at age 40 if there is a family history of prostate cancer.

FACT #3: Screening is easy – a brief prostate examination and a PSA

blood test. It’s that simple, but you have to be sure you get it done!

Make sure you receive the following as part of your screening:

• For many men, your annual health examination is done by your primary care physician (family practitioner or internist). However, many primary care doctors omit the prostate examination. FACT #4: Be sure to ask your doctor if your PSA levels are normal. At Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center and Western States HIFU we see many patients each year with advanced cancers because abnormal blood tests were not acted upon. If your doctor says either PSA level is abnormal, request that he or she send you to a urologist.

• You also need to have the prostate cancer blood test every year, called a PSA. When your doctor orders your annual blood work, ask if it includes both a “total” and “free” PSA. Either one of these can make the difference between finding prostate cancer early or allowing it to spread. That’s how my prostate cancer was diagnosed – total PSA was normal but the free fraction was low. That led to a bi-

ust last summer, my husband and I had plans for almost every weekend with the kids. We camped, hiked, went boogie boarding, crossed off a couple of states on our family’s “50 State” adventure.

record, from start until now: heading into month nine. These past few months, we limited our travels to much-needed local “staycations” for a change of scenery when possible.

ravel for our family has always been an exciting opportunity to explore both far-flung destinations and closer-to-home hidden gems.

During these unprecedented times defined by shelter-in-place and safer-at-home, we - like many families - pressed pause on several planned summer vacations and weekend getaways to destinations farther than an easy driving distance. For Southern Californians, the beaches are open, and the weather is bright and warm well into the fall and few places are as idyllic as Coronado Island to while away a couple of days in the surf and sand.

Just over the bridge from San Diego, Coronado is a small, quaint, tree-lined retreat characterized by beautiful, rarely

crowded white sand beaches, a rich, romantic history and laid-back, small town atmosphere. Although locals refer to it as “the island,” Coronado is really a peninsula connected to the mainland by a finger of land called the Silver Strand. With wide leafy streets lined with Victorian homes and Southern California beach bungalows, the island is small enough to walk almost anywhere (it’s only a mile from the San Diego Bay side of the peninsula to the Pacific Ocean). Once we parked upon arrival for a recent stay at the lovely Glorietta Bay Inn, we discovered that Coronado truly is a “car-optional” environment and were able to easily navigate the relatively flat paths on foot and by bicycle.

We chose the Glorietta Bay Inn (www. gloriettabayinn.com), a beautiful

boutique hotel and historic landmark famous for its grandeur architecture, as “home base.” The former private residence of sugar baron John D. Spreckels, the hotel (which features 11 historic mansion rooms in the main original building circa 1908 and 89 contemporary rooms and suites in structures added to the property in later years) is situated across the street from Coronado Beach and a short walking distance from an array of retail shops and restaurants.

Defined by an artful blend of Old World charm and contemporary coastal comfort, the Inn features a scenic outdoor verandah, a storied music room complete with a baby grand piano and a sun warmed lobby that once served as the grand foyer to Spreckels’ home.

Each of the historic mansion rooms are uniquely styled: the Sugar Baron Room, originally the private bedroom of Mrs. Spreckels, features king-bedded room with a large balcony and a spectacular view of Glorietta Bay; the Spreckels Suite the private bedroom of John D. Spreckels, this beautiful room has a living room area with a convenient kitchenette, and a separate bedroom with a king size bed. French doors off the living room open up to a spacious balcony with an equally gorgeous view of Glorietta Bay. Amenities for all accommodations include the complimentary use of beach chairs, towels, and sand toys for Coronado Beach.

As our family discovered on similar sojourns to “the island,” it doesn’t take much planning to have a perfect day in Coronado. We had brought our bicycles and started off along Coronado Beach - a picturesque stretch of sand and surf that stretches for over a mile along Ocean Boulevard in front of historic

and glamorous houses. Voted in the top 10 beaches in the USA by the Travel Channel, this long and wide beach is great for walks, runs, beach volleyball or sandcastle building. If you bring along a furry friend, there is a leash-free dog zone at the far end of the beach where pups chase each other in the waves.

Fans of author L. Frank Baum’s iconic classic “The Wizard of Oz” will enjoy pedaling past the quaint yellow Cape Cod-style home (located right across from Star Park) that he rented during his stays and the place where he penned three of the books in the Oz series.

We spent the better part of an afternoon tooling around town, along the Bayshore Bikeway, past Glorietta Bay and the Coronado Golf Course and under the Coronado Bridge (if you continue following the well-marked bike path, you’ll end up at the Coronado Ferry Landing, where a ten-minute ride would bring you to downtown San Diego.)

After our bike ride, we strolled Orange Avenue, a beautiful commercial boulevard that curves back to the Glorietta

Bay Inn, and stopped in Bay Books where staff members leave heartfelt handwritten recommendations under their favorite reads and stumbled upon MooTime Creamery - where locals and tourists alike were lined up for what they all (accurately) claimed was “the best handcrafted ice cream and hand-rolled cones” in town.

We kept the “enjoy the outdoors” theme going through the end of the day, spending the afternoon and early evening playing in the waves and soaking up the sun on Coronado Beach. The kids spent the entire trip outside and active - and much to their parent’s pleasure, off their respective electronic devices.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed kicking back on the balcony with a glass of wine each evening and even managed to finish a couple of books we’d been wanting to get to for weeks (you’d think we would have found the time at home, but it seems as though there’s been no shortage of home improvement projects to focus on).

Our weekend away in Coronado was just what we all needed - a change of scenery and experience - at a destination fast becoming one of our favorites.
