New research has found a new “magic” retirement savings number
(I explain how inflation factors in below.)
I say “magic” because if you put 10 people in a room, you’ll get 10 different opinions about how much you should save for retirement. And this estimate is no different. Northwestern Mutual surveyed 4,588 adults and found:
The new “magic” number for a comfortable retirement is $1.46 million.
It’s up 15% from last year’s $1.27 million number and is also an eye-popping 53% higher than the 2020 estimate.
Broken down by generation, the numbers get even bigger.
Gen Z and Millennials expect to need around $1.6 million to comfortably retire. And folks with over $1 million saved believe they’ll need nearly $4 million to be comfortable.
Does the average American actually need $1.46 million to retire comfortably?
Probably not. Another “magic” number from Fidelity suggests Americans should have 10x their income saved by age 67. If we 10x the median household income of $74,580, we get $745,800. That’s about half of the first “magic” number. For some Americans, $750k will be enough to retire on. For others, it won’t be nearly enough to support the lifestyle they want.
Planning for retirement isn’t about “magic” numbers. When we consider that the average retirement savings hovers around $88,000, the gap between desire and reality has never been greater. Most people don’t really know how much money they will need in retirement, and can wildly overestimate it. As much as humans like to look for simple answers and rules to follow, turning a portfolio into retirement income is complex. I wish I could give each person in that survey an advisor to help them calculate their own retirement target instead of guessing.
Inflation is weighing heavily on our fears for the future. Inflation has been very high for the last few years, and (in my opinion) the survey reflects the worry many feel about how much prices are rising. And how long high inflation will linger.
The latest March report shows that prices rose 3.5% over the last 12 months.
That’s stronger than analysts had expected, and increases concerns that inflation isn’t actually tamed yet. This negative surprise is likely to push back a Fed interest rate cut and stoke market volatility. We’re keeping an eye on the situation and will be in touch with updates as needed.
Perspectives from Enduring Couples at The Covington, an ECS Senior Living Community in Aliso Viejo
Every marriage has its story, and the longer the marriages, the richer the stories. Four longterm couples at The Covington, an independent senior living community in Aliso Viejo, reflect on their marriages for the month of February celebrating love.
Beth and Barry Lamont
In the mid-1960s, Barry was an Air Force officer when he volunteered to attend the Government language school in Monterey, California. He signed up to learn Korean, “and I was lucky enough to get in,” Barry says.
After graduation, one of his fellow officers in language school was assigned to Seoul. “He preceded me,” Barry says, “and by the time I got there, he was already engaged to be married.” It was at his fellow officer’s wedding that Barry spotted Beth. “We kind of clicked,” he says, “but she was very reluctant to be seen with me, because in those days respect-
able Korean women did not openly date men.” When they saw each other, Beth would bring a couple of her friends along with her, so no one would know who Barry was with. “We had a courtship in secret,” he says.
One of Barry’s language teachers from Monterey was Beth’s relative. The teacher wrote a letter of introduction for Barry to Beth’s family, and they allowed Beth to date him. Barry and Beth were married within the year.
Barry was transferred to Japan, where they had their two daughters. When he mustered out of the Air Force three years later, Barry went to Harvard for his MBA. His first job out of business school was with a bank in Chicago. “I joined them because they were starting up a Korean office,” he says. And within a year the couple were back in South Korea. During their time in Seoul, they went through a marriage course in the Catholic church. “It’s to make good marriages better,” Barry says. “You learn the importance of forgiving and having compassion for each other.’”
They have called The Covington home for two years. Barry smiles, saying that Beth “has blossomed here. Her paintings were on exhibition in the lobby.” The supportive community that they sought throughout their travels, they have now found at The Covington.
Barbara and Mark Pray
Barbara and Mark met through their work in 1978. Barbara was managing a bank in Fullerton, and Mark, originally from Michigan, had recently moved to Southern California as an HR Manager. “He came in to open an account,” Barbara says. A few weeks later, he came back. “He wanted to talk to me about other bank services,” she says. Barbara recalls that as he left, she thought to herself that he was a really nice guy. “And I thought, I hope he feels the same way about me.” A week later, Barbara came back from lunch to find a note on her desk, asking her to call Mark Pray. The phone call resulted in a dinner invitation.

were married. So you went through the college system as a married couple,” Vi says. They had their first daughter when Vi was just 19.
“So we go for dinner,” Barbara says, “and he’s in HR. The dinner was nice but he asked HR questions.” She laughs, describing the dinner like an interview. Clearly Mark approved of her responses to his questions, as about a month later, he asked Barbara to marry him. It was to be the second marriage for both of them, and they decided to visit a Minister Barbara knew in Laguna Hills to discuss the type of wedding they wanted. “The Minister talked to us for a while, and then he said ‘I think you’re a perfect couple. When do you want to set the date?’ and I thought, well, why not now?” So Barbara and Mark got married right then and there!
They both had daughters from their previous marriages, and Barbara recalls how they all got on well. “And we’ve been married for over 46 years now,” she says.
Mark reflects on what they’ve learned over the years, to establish a solid marriage. “Figure out what you both like to do and then do it together frequently,” he says. “And be honest with each other. And if something is not working the way you think it should, take the time to talk about it.”
The intuition that inspired their short courtship also inspired their decision to move to The Covington two years ago. They knew right away they
liked it. The size, location and nonprofit nature of the organization was important to them. “When you know, you know,” Mark says. Barbara adds, “Most importantly, we find the neighbors here are friendly, active, and positive; and the team, personable and professional.”
Vi and Jim Ritchie
The Ritchies grew up in Phoenix, Arizona. They started dating in their Senior year in high school and were married after their Freshman year in College in 1958. “Back then, there were a lot of couples our age who

“Change generates growth,” Jim says, and the move allowed them to grow together even more.
When their parents were aging, they returned to Phoenix where Vi’s career began to flourish. She eventually became the President of the Arizona chapter of a national organization of marketing professional services. “It’s something she couldn’t have done when we were raising our children,” Jim says.
Jim was offered a job as a Superintendent of a school district in the Bay Area, and they moved again. When it was time for retirement, they returned to Southern California.
Looking back on their 66 years together, Jim reflects on all the transitions they have navigated. “The other person may not always be in the same place where you are, but it’s important to understand what’s going on during those times with your partner and support them as best you can.”
Jim says that their move to The Covington nine months ago has been another form of transition for them. “Here, we both have an opportunity to grow through community.”
Joni and Bob Arnold
Joni & Bob Arnold grew up in Minnesota, and in 1974 they were set up by a mutual friend. Bob was 29 at the time, and Joni was 27. “We both had been in relationships, so we knew what we wanted,” Bob explains. When Bob first saw Joni, he thought she was “cute and short.” And Joni thought he was “cute and funny,” they laugh as they recall their first impressions.
On their first date, he went to her apartment for dinner. She put a frozen pizza in the oven and forgot to remove the cardboard from its bottom. But something clicked beyond the pizza, as their second date was just two days later. By the end of the week, Bob mentioned that they should get married, and on Monday they went ring shopping. So, within five days, they went from first date to engagement. They were married six months later.
Bob says that Joni can always find the good in people, which served her well in her career as a social worker in Minneapolis. Bob’s work in the aerospace industry took them to Virginia,

where they had their two children and where Joni worked for congressmen. In 1988 Bob was transferred to Southern California. As a Vice President, he was constantly travelling. Bob says that one of the secrets to the longevity of their marriage is that being apart made them appreciate each other.
They’ve been at The Covington for just over a year. “Joni’s involved in everything,” he says. Bob appreciates that they can be as active as they want to be. Looking back on their 50 years together, Bob reflects that the small disagreements don’t mean much. “They just kind of evaporate.” What surprises Bob the most is that “the time just goes by so fast.”

BRING DOWN THE HOUSE WITH THE

I haven’t been a kid in a while. What I recall about music lessons is that they were forced, and more importantly, stodgy.
Beginning somewhere around the fourth grade, students were advised to pick an instrument for class, and I can honestly say I only know two adults from those classes who still play those instruments today. Needless to say, my music classes were nothing like the offering at School of Rock Huntington Beach.
A unique community of teachers, musicians, and families, School of Rock Huntington Beach sounds exactly like what it is, and also nothing like what it truly means. Founded in 2014 by a trio of performers, educators, and business owners, the industry welcomed them onto the scene with open arms. Larry Boodman, an alum of the Orange County School of the Arts, and Jeff Nunes were members of an L.A-based indie rock group known as Fourwayfree. Joey Acona, a production and performance instructor at OCSA for many years, knew Boodman through their common connections.
“The School of Rock was borne from the desire to create a safe place for supportive collaboration among students, and has instilled confidence, self-esteem, and discipline that will serve them well into the future pur-
suit of any goal, not just music," says Jeff.
Practical instruction meets professional performance education. The students learn on guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, or vocals. But their weekly private lesson is combined with a weekly group rehearsal, “as the students prepare for an actual rock show that they perform at the end of the season. Themed - ACDC, Arena Rock, or Grunge. And played on professional stages like the House of Blues Anaheim.”
If you’re not sure what you’d like to specialize in just yet, no worries. School of Rock Huntington Beach provides a free trial lesson to anyone interested, and all are welcome to give them a try. Ages 6 to adult are brought into the fold, and “given the chance to learn team work, practice commitment, and master their chosen instrument. It makes learning not only fun and engaging, but a team sport.” Glad I don’t have to be a kid to go back to School (of Rock).

How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer?
There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.
Look especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.
ACTINIC KERATOSIS
An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.
SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.
BASAL CELL CARCINOMA
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.
MELANOMA
Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.
WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW
1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.
2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life.
3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling
A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match?
B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin?
C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue?
D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.
E - Evolution: Has it changed?
F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others?
4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

In a recent article by the Washington Post, it was discovered that 37.5% of one company’s recommendations were found to have major safety and care violations. Yet those recommendations had scored high on the web-based company’s internal measuring system.

More Prescription Drug Savings Coming in 2026
There are a few other changes to prescription drug plans on the horizon. In 2024, Medicare negotiated for the first time the prices of 10 of the most commonly used and expensive prescription drugs. The lower prices take effect in 2026 and are expected to save people enrolled in Medicare an estimated $1.5 billion in outof-pocket costs in 2026 alone.

Date nights and family outings often include two of my favorite past times – dining out and going to the movies. With the opening of Scripted Bar & Kitchen (located inside the MetroLux Theatres in the Outlets at San Clemente), combining both for a memorable evening out with my husband or a family fun day with the kids just became infinitely easier.
For the former, the full-service bar features a nearly 30-foot show stopping (pun intended) natural stone quartzite bar serving top liquor brands for a variety of classic and custom cocktails, craft draft and bottled beer, fine wine and non-alcoholic beverage options. Another defining feature – six overhead television screens perfect for catching favorite sporting events.
I lean toward appetizers as entrees so the perfect “date night” involves a glass of fine wine and an array of delicious dishes to share. Our faves at Scripted? The fried calamari with marinara, Thai chicken tenders (options also include BBQ, plain or Buffalo), Bretzel bites with beer cheese sauce or honey mustard and edamame. Other popular picks include the pro-
sciutto arugula plate, crab rangoons (think crab and cream cheese accompanied by a sweet chili dipping sauce) and hulk nachos (homemade tortilla chips, chicken, guacamole, pico de gallo, sour cream and cheese sauce).
The great thing about Scripted Bar & Kitchen is that it’s open to the public – whether or not you’re going to a movie. So it’s destined to be an option for a quick bite to refuel when my daughter and I hit the Outlets for a mom + me shopping excursion.
Meals out with the kids? There are plenty of pasta and pizza offerings including the Penne Emiliano (julienne of zucchini, prosciutto and creamy Parmesan) and a spicy sausage flatbread topped with mozzarella, Andouille sausage, pepperoni and chili flakes.
“Handhelds” served with fries, rice, truffle fries or side house green salad range from a crispy shrimp burger and Malibu organic veggie burger to a herb chicken bacon avocado sandwich on ciabatta and the signature Metro burger with gouda cheese, bacon onion jam, arugula, tomato and garlic aioli.
You’ll have your work cut out for you in choosing between the sweet treats for dessert. The Metro sundae puts an inventive spin on the traditional favorite topping vanilla ice cream with brownie bites, chocolate and caramel drizzled popcorn and whipped cream – yum!

In interviewing scores of entrepreneurs over the last 20+ years, I’ve learned that sometimes a business owners’ career trajectory is a straight line. For others, finding their true calling might have taken a bit more of a circuitous route. But in virtually every instance, the most successful professionals are those who are passionate about what they do. So much so that their daily responsibilities don’t feel much like work at all.
Such is the case for Cesar Jimenez and his wife, Adria, who initially followed a different path before finding their shared passion for the home improvement industry. Today they own and operate a number of local businesses, including the San Clemente-based Coastal Shades, which specializes in motorized window coverings, blinds, interior and exterior shades, shutters and drapery.
“My previous career had me traveling all over the country selling hardware and software for a telematics company,” says Cesar. “After years of living the traveling-salesman life and missing out on a lot of time with my wife and daughters, I decided to look into other career options.”
Sitting on a park bench on a family vacation in Colorado, watching his kids ice skate, Cesar’s wife turned to him and asked why not start a business there? The very same day they started the search, they found a gentleman selling his window coverings company. When one door closes, a window opens, but not many blow open quite so quickly following the decision to make a life change. They immediately began the purchasing process, and a few short months later moved to the Centennial State to watch their new business flourish.
When deciding to relocate to San Clemente to be closer to his wife’s family, the couple were excited for the opportunity to “be a part of the community for which we have such fond memories.”

Over the years since we moved into our (new to us) home, my husband, Tim, and I have embarked on several major home improvement projects. California Gun Services Safe Gun Storage, Ownership and Disposal
After my grandfather passed away, I moved in with my grandma, doing chores around the house and helping to maintain the garden.
One day, I was looking for my grandfather’s whetstone, to sharpen an old pair of shears, and I stumbled across his Colt Python 357 Magnum. I thought it might be a relic from one of the movies he worked on in the 50’s, but according to my grandma, it was just “one of those things your grandpa just insisted on having.”
Jeff McCabe has gotten more of his fair share of calls from people like myself, who accidentally come across family firearms in their home and don’t have the first idea of what to do with them. The owner of California Gun Services (CGS), Jeff is in the business of safe gun storage, ownership and disposal. The first step? Following California gun laws. I had zero clue that by driving the Colt to the Army Navy to try and turn it in, I’d be breaking a couple laws. According to Jeff there are laws restricting gifting or selling a gun, receiving a gun, borrowing a gun, transporting a gun, even storing guns. New laws come out every year, and it is almost impossible for anyone, even aficionados to keep up with them. Jeff and his team work closely with local law enforcement to ensure the process is easy and safe.
My grandma was afraid the grandkids might find it and would “just feel safer without it.” A sentiment shared by Jeff’s friends, family and fellow church parishionersmany of whom have sought his assistance over the years to ensure the proper storage or disposal of firearms they found themselves in possession of upon the passing of a loved one.
A BUSINESS IS BORN
What initially started as a favor for a friend has grown into a bonafide side business as word has spread about Jeff’s particular skill set and confidence in handling firearms. As the owner of the Orange-based One Way Painting, Jeff often encountered situations whereby he would come across a firearm when moving furniture around for a client prior to starting a painting project.
“Many times, the firearm belonged to my client’s father, grandfather or late husband and she never touched it because she was afraid of guns, but didn’t know how to get rid of it safely,” he says. “So many times these guns are loaded and just stuck in a nightstand or stored under the bed.”
Over the years, Jeff has encountered a variety of different circumstances where individuals seek his assistance in disposing of unwanted firearms. All situations call for professionalism and expertise, but some also require a more delicate approach. One such case was a recent call by a family whose patriarch was once a responsible gun owner, but was now suffering the early signs of dementia. “His family wanted the firearms removed for safety reasons, but the gentleman lawfully owns the guns so it’s important to have a heightened sensitivity so as not to create upset,” says Jeff.
In addition to lay people looking for help, Jeff and his team also assist estate and probate attorneys representing
clients who are surviving family members in possession of unwanted firearms to navigate the process of safe gun disposal.
Raised in a family that had firearms for hunting and sporting, Jeff was taught early on how to handle, be respectful and always be safe when handling firearms. Jeff adds that “ … we as Americans have a great privilege to be able to own a firearm, but with that comes an even greater responsibility to not only protect ourselves legally by complying with Federal and State laws, but to protect ourselves, our neighbors and most importantly, our children from all possible dangers associated with firearms.”
San Clemente resident Rhonda Murphy couldn’t agree more. “There are many things to deal with when a loved one dies. In 2010, when cleaning out my husband’s closet, I came across several of his guns. I didn’t want to keep them and was unsure of what to do with them. My daughters didn’t want the guns and I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of storing them as my grandkids are often at my house. A friend suggested I call Jeff. He was very nice, easy to talk with, trustworthy and knowledgeable. He came to my house, checked all the guns to make sure they were unloaded and removed them. Jeff also told me that one of the guns was a collector’s item and was able to sell it for me. One less thing to have to worry about. I can’t recommend Jeff enough.”
As part of their auditing procedures, California Gun Services gives clients the option of a Voluntary Registration Form (in the case where the weapon was inherited). Many of Jeff’s clients are like my grandma who just prefers that the gun is destroyed. Jeff holds a Federal Firearm License and as such, is able to take possession of firearms without a Gun Transfer. He can also inspect firearms to ensure they are still in working order, and even tell you if the gun, or guns, you have is California Compliant.
“Most people are unaware that firearms that were purchased legally from a gun shop just a year ago may now be illegal in California,” says Jeff. “If we find a firearm that is out of compliance with the law, you’ll receive solid advice on how to make it compliant, sell it out of state, or potentially dispose of it. Our process is approved and certified by local law enforcement, it’s legal, safe and adheres to all state and federal firearms laws.

GUN AUDIT
Jeff will come to you and inspect your firearms to make sure they are in proper working order and that they are California Compliant. If your firearm is not compliant with the California Law, you will receive solid advice on how to make it compliant or possibly dispose or sell it out of state.
GUN DISPOSAL
If a firearm is found to be unsafe to use, cannot be repaired and has no historical value. California Gun Services will permanently destroy it by torching the receiver or frame into three parts or cutting it with a saw into five parts. Jeff will document this with photos and log it for the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and email you the proof of destruction.
GUN TRANSFERS
Private Party Transfers happen between two individuals and will need to take place at a Federal Firearm Licensed Dealer. Since this needs to be done at a Gun Shop, Jeff cannot offer this as an in-home service. If you have inherited or legally obtain a firearm, he can provide you with a Voluntary Registration form or you can download it from the California Department of Justice which is NOT required to do at a gun shop. California Gun Services has a Federal Firearm License and can legally come to you and take possession of a firearm without a Gun Transfer.
GUN PURCHASES OF UNWANTED FIREARMS OR COLLECTIONS
California Gun Services will come to you and appraise a single gun or an entire collection of any size. You will receive an explanation of how guns are legally sold and transferred. California Gun Services can then make you a fair market value offer and/or explain how a gun can be put up for sale on consignment.
AMMUNITION AUDIT
California Gun Services will make sure you are using the right ammunition for the firearms that you have and that it is legal in the State of California. Jeff will inspect the ammunition to make sure that it has been stored correctly, is in good condition and will ensure that the ammunition is being stored properly, using the right type of container and stored in the right location in your home.

A good sommelier is a helper, a guide to finding the best wine for your food and experience. For this month’s installment, we again approached South County-based sommelier Micah Sampson for a bit of education about the wine/food pairings, whether the size and shape of the glass makes a difference and whether wine should be decanted before its served.
Q Does white really go with fish/seafood and red with red meat or is there some overlap?
A When in doubt the white with seafood and red with red meat is a good rule. But of course, there’s definitely some overlap here when getting into the details. There are some fantastic lighter bodied red wines out there that can easily be paired with fish and other seafoods. Some of my favorites are Pinot Noir, Beaujolais, and Grenache, each of them have a light body with very light tannins, won’t overpower the delicate fish. And for red meats you can easily pour a full bodied white wine that has high acidity, think California Chardonnays, white Rhone blends, Rieslings and Chenin Blancs. All of these have nice body that can stand up to high fat red meats, and nice acidity that can shine through some of the more robust seasonings and marinades that are used to cook them.
Q Does the shape/size of the wine glass make a difference?
A This is one of those topics that I wish people took more seriously! In short, yes, the shape and size of the glass makes a huge difference! Wine glasses are designed with very specific shapes and sizes to help deliver wine aromas to your nose. If search “red wine glass” and “white wine glass” you’ll notice red wine glasses are much bigger and more bowl shaped, that’s because there are vapors coming off the wine as the alcohol slowly evaporates, those vapors are filled with compounds that help you taste the wine. White wines a typically chilled and won’t give off as much aromas, therefore the glass doesn’t need to be as large. Another reason for the smaller shape for whites is they don’t need need to aerate like reds do, less surface area reduces aeration and keeps the wine cooler. Reds on the other hand love to aerate and
therefore need all the surface area to slowly oxidize (in a good way). The bowl-shaped narrower opening at the top of the glass does two things that are both very important: 1) It helps trap the aromas into a smaller area to help you small them. Think about how much more difficult it would be to smell wine in a cereal bowl with an 8 inch opening than a wine glass with a 2 inch opening. 2) It helps keep the wine in the glass when you swirl the heck out of it, which you should do! I love swirling wine, it introduces oxygen (good oxidation) into the wine and gets all those great aromas swirling around the glass for you to smell!
Q Should I decant wine before I drink it?
A Decanting can do wonders for your wine, but it isn’t always necessary. You should have a nice decanter at home if you’re serious about enjoying some great red wines (don’t worry about decanting white wines), and that decanter should have a nice wide bottom that creates a ton of surface area when the wine is poured in, and a narrow top that keeps too much air from getting introduced and makes it easy to pour a glass. The types of red wines you’re decanting are usually full bodied reds that usually have a some age on them (like 5-10+ years), not those cheap red blends you’re buying for $8.99 at the market. The idea behind decanting is you’re introducing oxygen into the wine and a chemical change is happening, a lot of those volatile compounds (bad aromas) are evaporating off and the harsher tannins are softening up a bit, which allows you to enjoy the wine more. So, if you have a 2010 Barolo or a 2015 Napa Cabernet, let those bad boys decant for 30-60 minutes, maybe take some small sips and smells during that time so you can see how the wine changes.
