covid-19 impact report: MARCH 2020 – MARCH 2021
The SouthCoast Emergency Response Fund was established a year ago in March 2020, to swiftly distribute aid to the most vulnerable communities and regional nonprofits experiencing the detrimental impact of COVID-19. Additionally, as part of our overall COVID-19 relief effort many of our component funds generously responded as well resulting in just over $9M in total donations. We will continue to raise support for and issue grants on a rolling basis from the Emergency Response Fund well into 2021 as well as facilitate contributions from our community-minded funders.
In addition to grant making, the Community Foundation will also provide nonprofits with capability-building programs through the newly formed Massachussetts Community Foundation Partnership and collaboration opportunities through the Meet Me for Coffee virtual meeting series. This is all part of the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to nonprofits and the region, providing access to resources and serving as a catalyst and convener for local philanthropy.

“With the Community Foundation’s help, our Food Assistance Program has increased services by 300% since March 2020. That’s 15,500 emergency food deliveries to nearly 50,000 neighbors in need. It’s been a lifeline for parents like Sarah, a mother of 3 who was working full time before the pandemic and is now out of work.” My Brother’s Keeper, President, Erich Miller

“At the peak of the pandemic, it became clear that our community was struggling to put food on the table while our local farmer families were also facing challenges reaching their customers. With the support of SouthCoast Community Foundation, Coastal Foodshed partnered with 12 local farmers to purchase excess food they couldn’t sell due to new social distancing regulations. More than 100,000 lbs. of locally grown food valued at $67,000 made its way to struggling families. We are grateful to the Community Foundation for supporting our local food economy and keeping our communities healthy.” Coastal Foodshed, Inc., Executive Director & Co-Founder, Stephanie Perks

“The Plymouth Task Force to End Homelessness, with the generous grant support from the SouthCoast Community Foundation in 2020 and 2021, has been able to provide innovative new sheltering options for our vulnerable homeless population during the COVID pandemic. As a small volunteer agency, we have also gained financial sustainability to develop a new website and donor software for enhanced networking within the community.” Plymouth Task Force to End Homelessness, President, Connie Melahoures

OUTCOMES & INSIGHTS
Broadened & Deepened Partnerships
• MA COVID-19 Relief Fund provided a precedent-setting partnership between Boston-based philanthropy and a network of Community Foundations. • New coalition of 14 foundations, established the Massachusetts Community Foundation Partnership, providing services and capacity-building support to nonprofits. • Southcoast Funders Group, brought together a range of philanthropic institutions to collaborate, address emerging needs, and share best practices.
Heightened Awareness • Appreciation of the unique role community foundations play to effectively address emergency relief increased, given our knowledge of the local landscape and networks. • Shared commitment to support the most vulnerable populations broke down barriers between Boston and the rest of the Commonwealth, providing increased visibility to racial, economic, and philanthropic disparities.

OUTCOMES & INSIGHTS
Community-Driven Philanthropy
• Oversight and accountability by a community-based committee guaranteed grants were informed and driven by local insight. • Meet Me for Coffee virtual meetings created collaborative environment for local nonprofit leaders to tackle emerging challenges, sustain and expand networks, and practice self-care to ensure their own well-being and effectiveness.
Innovative Grant-Making • Urgent need brought about by the pandemic coupled with trust-based philanthropy principles removed obstacles typically found in a traditional paternalistic 3-month grant cycle resulting in an accelerated and streamlined process that made it easier for nonprofits to access funds.

THE PLEDGE By signing the Council on Philanthropy’s COVID-19 pledge last year, we recognized the critical need to act with urgency in support of our nonprofit partners as well as the people and communities hit hardest by the impacts of COVID-19. We stand with many other philanthropic leaders providing our grantee partners a flexible and unobstructed process to move their essential work forward powerfully and confidently.
