Message from Our Leadership Dear Friends of the SouthCoast Community Foundation, There is nothing we can add to the numerous characterizations of 2020 as it was a year unto itself. What we hope, though, is that this Annual Report provides you with some insight and inspiration as to how your Community Foundation responded to this very unique year.

A significant amount of our Emergency Response Fund came from foundations, businesses, families, and individuals who reached out to us seeking to understand what was happening in our region and partner with us to help them make an impact.
As the community’s philanthropic institution, the SouthCoast Community Foundation led the charge of raising and garnering funds through our SouthCoast Emergency Response Fund, resulting in more than $6,000,000 being quickly and efficiently reinvested last year in our community to offset the significant and broad impacts of COVID-19. The needs to be addressed covered the gamut of a society without adequate systems to respond to a pandemic: Access to food, reliable housing, mental health support, the harm of isolation, severe unemployment, access to testing and reliable health information, frontline workers who could not just work from home, and much more. This required our local nonprofits to be flexible, responsive, grounded, and effective while managing many of their own challenges. Our job was to provide these organizations with the resources they needed to do their work and trust that they understood their communities better than anyone else.
We appreciate that the values that drove this situation are the ones that guide us each day: respect, transparency, authenticity, data, accessibility, service, and a capacity to listen to understand.
This trusted relationship with our nonprofit partners also had an unintended consequence: funders for whom COVID was a wake-up call to the need

These values are guiding our work in response to the other more long-term and lethal pandemic of racism in our country and our region. The long-overdue elevation of the harm to us all of systemic racism has required us to listen and learn as we remain committed to building on those values and those learnings to more fully embrace our role as an antiracist organization. Yes, 2020 was a year unto itself. But it has also given us the gift to see more clearly the power, need, and responsibility of our mission. So yes, with you, we responded to COVID-19, and we will, with you, continue to respond to the needs of our region. Thank you for being on this journey with us.

The SouthCoast Emergency Response Fund was established in March 2020, to swiftly distribute aid to the most vulnerable communities and regional nonprofits experiencing the detrimental impact of COVID-19. Additionally, as part of our overall COVID-19 relief effort many of our donor advised funds generously responded as well resulting in more than $6.2M in total donations and more than $5.9M in grants.

COVID-19 Response Overview: Donor Stories Like many, Brian and Elizabeth Merrick were holed up at home due to the pandemic but anxious to find a way to help. They did their research and discovered we had opened the SouthCoast Emergency Response Fund. The Merrick’s were familiar with the Community Foundation, having set up a scholarship fund with us in 2017. We were moved to learn the story behind the Merrick’s decision to support the Community Foundation relief efforts, and the Merrick’s were elated to learn they had been the very first donors to the fund with $100. The Merrick’s understand that no gift is ever too small.

“At the peak of the pandemic, it became clear that our community was struggling to put food on the table while our local farmer families were also facing challenges reaching their customers. With the support of SouthCoast Community Foundation, Coastal Foodshed partnered with 12 local farmers to purchase excess food they couldn’t sell due to new social distancing regulations. More than 100,000 lbs. of locally grown food made its way to struggling families. COVID-19 RESPONSE:
Donor Stories Innovative Funding Collaboration Last fall, the Commonwealth Children’s Fund (CCF), Eastern Bank Charitable Fund, SouthCoast Community Foundation, and United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley came together to discuss how all four philanthropic organizations could partner to provide early childcare funding support to the Southeastern Massachusetts region. Knowing that the New Bedford based nonprofit PACE (People Acting in Community Endeavors) worked closely with home-based childcare providers throughout the 47 towns they serve, the Community Foundation engaged them in this unique collaboration. PACE had the relationships, systems, and processes to identify where the funds should go and expedite their delivery. Thanks to an innovative funding approach, $55,000 from the Community Foundation coupled with contributions from Eastern, United Way, and matching from CCF, turned into a total of $342,000 for the area. This enabled the PACE team to assist 137 independent licensed providers create a COVID safe environment for the children they serve.

COVID-19 RESPONSE:
Grantee Stories The New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center
The New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center was conducting its board meeting on March 10th, when the Governor issued a state of emergency. The next day, the Center had to close. Gone were all the wonderful opportunities the organization regularly used to raise revenue like cruise ship presentations, tours, live events, and the gift shop. What also disappeared was the opportunity to regularly connect with the community the Center had created between staff, board, volunteers, members from the fishing industry, and the residents of New Bedford. They were able to salvage that sense of connection through Zoom meetings, but everyone was relieved on July 9th when the Heritage Center was able to reopen. Thanks to an unrestricted $7,000 Stabilization Grant from the Community Foundation, allowing them to invest in air filtration, touchless faucets, PPE supplies, and the like, Executive Director Laura Orleans was able to create a COVID safe environment for visitors and staff.

COVID-19 RESPONSE:
Grantee Stories The Plymouth Taskforce to End Homelessness
The Plymouth Taskforce to End Homelessness, an all-volunteer organization in partnership with Father Bill’s & Mainspring, has been providing shelter for the homeless since 2004. For the last seventeen years, two churches were used to provide a warm respite for meals and facilities during the winter months, which usually concluded in April. When COVID-19 stuck, all businesses and public buildings were shut down, so homeless individuals had no place to go. On top of that, it was a particularly wet and cold season so shelters were needed through May.
After exploring several different options, the Taskforce found a creative solution in the Pilgrim Sands Hotel to provide shelter. To cover the costs of the hotel rooms in the winter and spring months, Plymouth Taskforce received several grants from our Emergency Response Fund throughout the year totaling $132,000.

COVID-19 RESPONSE:
Grantee Stories Hockomock Area YMCA
When its facilities closed on March 15th, the Hockomock Area YMCA, which serves 15 communities, shifted its focus to meet two critical community needs, food security and emergency childcare. Despite losing 41% of its membership and nearly 100% of programming revenue, they remained focused on being strong community partners and good resource stewards. The Emergency Response Fund grants totaling $315,000 helped them fill these needs.

Since last March, they have been providing quality emergency childcare programming for 80 children of healthcare providers, first responders, and other essential personnel. Additionally, they have served approximately 87,297 meals and distributed more than 8,680 family food bags. At the start of the program, they distributed less than 80 bags. Today, they are consistently distributing more than 1,000 each week, an increase of more than 1200%.
COVID-19 Response: Convening Virtually The Foundation also provided an opportunity for nonprofit leaders to share best practices and tackle the challenging COVID-19 landscape through a bimonthly virtual meeting series we called, Meet Me for Coffee. On March 20, we held our very first one. Each meeting was a chance to check in with one another but also to focus on a topic such as the role of governance in a time of crisis or Zoom etiquette, tapping into our network of nonprofit and community experts. To quote our attendees, these meetings were a ‘gift that kept on giving’ and they met colleagues that they wouldn’t otherwise have gotten to know.
We were honored that these sessions were featured in the Philanthropy Massachusetts 51st Annual Meeting showcase of innovative programs developed in response to the pandemic.
As a founding partner of the Massachusetts Community Foundations Partnership, a new collaboration of 14 community foundations, the SouthCoast Community Foundation in addition to grant making, provided capacity-building programs to nonprofit organizations through online workshops and trainings. This coalition was formed to directly address the pandemic’s impact on nonprofits.

CONVENING VIRTUALLY:
Funders’ Tour
Every year the SouthCoast Community Foundation convenes philanthropic community members with nonprofit leaders to deepen the understanding of the work being done to make the Southcoast a more inclusive, healthier, safer, and more vibrant region. As with the rest of the world, the pandemic required us to integrate a virtual strategy to connect with our constituents. The silver lining was our ability to include twice as many attendees, broadening our reach and, in turn, increasing awareness about the issues discussed. Not only could many more people attend but those that couldn’t were able to watch the recording and share it with others.
This virtual tour also focused on the work being done to end racism. We heard from Dr. Jennifer DeBarros, Director of Prevention & Intervention Programs at HEAL Center of NorthStar Learning Centers, Gail Fortes, Executive Director of the YWCA Southeastern Massachusetts, and Dr. LaSella L. Hall President of NAACP New Bedford and Associate Director of Frederick Douglass Unity House at UMass Dartmouth.
The April tour provided an overview of the first grant recipients from the SouthCoast Emergency Response Fund. With updates from Helena DaSilva Hughes, Executive Director of the Immigrants’ Assistance Center, Paula Shiner, CEO of Coastline Elderly Services, Inc., and Liz Wiley, Executive Director of the Marion Institute. This was followed by a panel discussing the impact and response of arts & culture leaders including Raquel Dias, President of the Cape Verdean Association New Bedford, Tom Flint, Executive Director of YEAH! Corps., Lee Heald, Director of AHA! New Bedford, and Patrick Norton, Executive Director of the Narrows Center for the Arts.
The last tour in October addressed the current and emerging housing crisis amongst the most vulnerable residents within the South Coast. Susan Mazzarella, CEO of Catholic Social Services, Corinn Williams, Executive Director of the Community Economic Development Center, John Yazwinski, President and CEO of Father Bill’s & Mainspring, and Reverend David Lima from Rise Up for Homes participated in the discussion.
The June tour continued to focus on the impact of COVID-19 but specifically innovation and collaboration around food security and workforce development. Kim Ferreira, Co-Executive Director of Coastal Foodshed, Devin Byrnes, owner of Destination Soups, and Jessica Coelho Arruda, owner of Tia Maria’s European Café discussed their experiences and collaboration efforts. Maria Ferreira-Bedard, Executive Director of SER-Jobs for Progress, Inc., Wendy Garf-Lipp, Executive Director of United Neighbors of Fall River, and Charlie Merrow, CoOwner of Merrow Manufacturing, LLC did as well.

CONVENING VIRTUALLY:
Summer’s Last Blast 25th Anniversary Celebration Our annual end-of-summer event was virtual last year, but it did not lack in personal experiences and festivities thanks to wonderful local entertainment and immersive creative experiences. To complement the evening, each ticket holder and sponsor received hand-delivered goodies thanks to Westport Rivers Winery, Cuttyhunk Shellfish Farms, and LaFrance Hospitality to enjoy while taking in the experience in their living room or outside with friends. To connect with other attendees everyone was given access to a virtual ‘photo booth’ filter to post and share on social media.
Even though we couldn’t enjoy each other’s company in person, the virtual nature of the event did allow us to feature many more wonderful artists and entertainers from our community than we would normally. And provide ample viewing opportunities for those that couldn’t participate.

CONVENING VIRTUALLY:
Scholarships
We couldn’t let the Scholarship season come and go without acknowledgement, even if we couldn’t hold our annual celebration due to the pandemic. The Community Foundation staff came up with a fun solution. Under the guise of a scholarship ‘interview,’ President John Vasconcellos and the team held zoom calls with scholarship recipients and their families to surprise them with their awards.
Needless to say, there were a lot of smiles through tears and looks of disbelief as everyone took in the good news. In total, the Community Foundation gave out 97 awards for a total of $491,877.
Last year’s applicants were also able to use uAspire, a Financial Aid Help Desk. The Community Foundation is one of the first to use this innovative and new online tool. Moving forward, all students applying to Community Foundation scholarships can use it to access ongoing support while they and their families navigate the financial aid process.

DONOR STORY: New Bedford residents Jeanne and John Fabian were faced with a challenge no parent should have to face. How to honor the life of a son whose life ended way too soon. They were directed our way, and in December 2020, the Fabians opened The Jake Fabian Memorial Fund, which will make grants to nonprofits that help underserved youth in our community. They initially funded it with $565.68 remaining from memorial gifts that had come their way after Jake’s death. On January 6th, Jake’s 30th birthday, Jeanne thought it would be nice if she could find 30 people to make 30 gifts of $30 each to the Fund in memory of Jake. Jeanne asked us for help, so we quickly established the donation page on our website to link to a Facebook page.
Jeanne was unsure how people might respond. With help from their daughter, they uploaded the post at 8:30 that night. By midnight they received 88 gifts. By the end of his birthday, 249 gifts. Jeanne was overwhelmed and incredibly grateful that his birthday did not pass without it being celebrated.
