Message from the Chair

Dear Friends of the SouthCoast Community Foundation, The past year has been one of great change, as well as opportunities to reflect, learn, and adapt. Yet, through it all, the SouthCoast Community Foundation has continued to make a positive impact in our region. With the unwavering support of our donors, partners, and volunteers, we have been able to fund and provide needed resources for a wide range of programs and initiatives that address critical community needs in our three priority areas: • Arts and creativity for a vibrant and inclusive region; • Education success for youth and adult learners; • Economic sustainability and workforce opportunity. In addition to these three priority areas, in 2022, the Community Foundation distributed $1.3 million in state emergency response funds relative to the effects of the pandemic, enabling many organizations to continue serving our communities through programs addressing issues such as food insecurity and housing. In this annual report, you will find stories that illustrate the impact of our work. You will learn about the inspiring organizations and individuals that we have partnered with to make a difference in the lives of those in our community. And, you will see how your contributions have helped to make our community stronger and more resilient. I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to everyone who has contributed to our success. Together, we are making a difference and building a stronger South Coast community. I hope you will take a few moments to read through this annual report and share in our pride in what we have accomplished. And, please reach out and let me know what you think. In gratitude,

Gail Fortes Board Chair

Arts & Culture

2022 was the fifth year of the Creative Commonwealth Initiative, a statewide partnership between local community foundations and the Barr Foundation. The goal of the initiative is to elevate the arts and enable creative expression to engage and inspire a dynamic, thriving Massachusetts. As part of this work, the SouthCoast Community Foundation launched the South Coast Creative Initiative in 2017 because we believe artists and arts organizations are vital components of what make our communities thrive.

Take for example Armani, a 15-year-old participant in Dream Out Loud Center’s arts program. Based in Kilburn Mill in New Bedford’s South End, the program provides facilities and instruction for young people interested in music, creative writing, graphic arts, and web design.

“You’re free to be whoever you want to be here. I want to share a message through music to be confident and to not be afraid of being bullied for being yourself,” says Armani. “I love that it feels safe and like a family environment… music is something that can help with mental health, to let other kids know that you’re not alone.”

Meet the Changemaker: Priscilla Ditchfield Chair, Arts Advisory Committee Tell me a little about yourself and how you became involved in the arts. Before moving to the South Coast, I lived in Cleveland. I got to know about work in the arts and grantmaking through a family foundation that I worked for. When we retired, we chose to move to the South Coast to be near the ocean, but as I got to know the community, I became most interested in the arts. My husband was very involved in the New Bedford Arts Museum, and I became involved in that and in the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra. I love how art can make you think and change your perspective on something.

What have you seen change in the arts in the South Coast in the last several years? Since the Barr Foundation partnered with the Community Foundation, we’ve seen a real increase in collaboration across the sector. We’ve been able to convene people from a variety of nonprofits who share ideas and concerns. We’ve also seen a lot going on in the arts in Fall River recently. The development of FRACC (Fall River Arts and Culture Coalition) and Viva Fall River have increased the visibility and activity of what’s happening in the city.

What do you hope to see happen in the arts in the next ten years? I think it would be great to see more collaboration between the arts and healthcare institutions because there’s been a lot of evidence that shows how art improves health outcomes. There’s also a great initiative underway with New Bedford Creative on supporting the business side of being an artist, and I think it would be wonderful to see that grow and support artists across the South Coast.

Strategic Funding Priority:

Education We at the Community Foundation believe that improving the quality of life in southeastern Massachusetts is contingent on creating greater educational opportunities for children as well as adults. That’s why support for programs from early childhood education through college and beyond is a cornerstone of the work of the Community Foundation. In 2022, we were proud to announce the BankFive President’s Scholarship Fund, established with a $1.2 million investment, which will offer South Coast students significant scholarship opportunities for all four years of college. “BankFive has always been committed to reinvesting in our communities, and that includes investing in the futures of the children and young adults who live here,” said BankFive CEO Anne Tangen. “By providing the means for the next generation to receive an education to better prepare them for brighter futures, we honor our previous presidents and CEOs who devoted themselves to the same goals.”

Meet the Changemaker: SouthCoast Community Foundation Scholarship Recipient Hongyu Zhao Tell us a little about yourself. I’m currently a sophomore attending the University of Southern California (USC) as an electrical and computer engineering major. In college, I have been an undergraduate teacher’s assistant for a programming class, and I am also a part of the school’s recumbent vehicle design team. In my free time, I enjoy rock climbing and playing instruments (I play the saxophone and piano).

SouthCoast Community Foundation

What did receiving a scholarship mean to you?

What do you want to do after you graduate?

For both my freshman and sophomore years of college, my family had to support both my sister and me as we attended college. It was already a financial burden for my parents to support my sister, but having to support my decision of going to USC, which is quite an expensive school, would definitely have not been possible if not for the scholarships I received from the SouthCoast Community Foundation.

There are a lot of things I think are really cool, such as working on the next spaceships that help us better understand our solar system, creating cheap and accessible prosthetics for those in need, or working on greener energies that help mitigate global warming. Ultimately, though, I hope wherever my career takes me, I can work on something that I find cool, but can also help people.

Strategic Funding Priority:

Racial Equity 2022 was the second year of grantmaking for the Community Foundation’s Leadership Equity Fund, which was established to drive progress around racial equity. Grants from the fund are made to nonprofit organizations working to end racism and run by leaders who identify as black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) and to support the professional development and advancement of nonprofit employees who identify as BIPOC. $110,340 was granted to organizations doing this critical work in 2022. YWCA of Southeastern Massachusetts held a series of Board training sessions, supported by the Leadership Equity Fund, aimed to educate emerging leaders on Board management and governance. Enrollment is focused on diverse communities: BIPOC, LGBTQ+, under 30, cultural backgrounds and levels of ability who have not yet served on a Board.

Meet the Changemaker: Shaun VanLaarHoven

EXECUTIVE CHEF AND KITCHEN DIRECTOR, ROUND THE BEND FARM BOARD MEMBER, YOUTH OPPORTUNITIES UNLIMITED PARTICIPANT, YWCA BOARD LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

Tell me about your work at Round the Bend Farm.

Why did you decide to participate in the YWCA Board Leadership Program?

I’m the executive chef at the farm. Our three tenets are around modeling nature, valuing diversity and redefining wealth. We look to nature as our guide in terms of the crops that are planted and the food that we serve. Over 70% of the plate we serve is sourced locally.

I had been asked to join various Boards, but I was hesitant because I didn’t really know what it entailed. I wanted to be informed going into a Board, to be able to go in with questions, so it wasn’t just about them interviewing me, but it was also about me interviewing them. I wanted to be the best that I could be if I was going to serve on a Board.

“Board service is a great way to give back, and to provide leadership.”

What was the program like? There were often well-established community members who would talk about their experiences on Boards, and then we were given the opportunity to ask questions, so that was helpful. You have to take risks, and in a sense step outside yourself. I think that if people are nervous about being on a Board, that they should look into this training, and don’t let anything scare them away. I really appreciated that the training was accessible as far as cost and featured folks from diverse backgrounds. Annual Report 2022

Economic Opportunity

SouthCoast Wind, f/k/a Mayflower Wind, is slated to supply Massachusetts with offshore wind energy in the next several years, with the energy pipeline coming through Brayton Point in Somerset, and with turbines launching from New Bedford. As a show of its deep commitment to the community, in 2021, SouthCoast Wind committed to grant $27 million over ten years to build diverse, equitable, and inclusive (DEI) employment, training, and supply chain opportunities. When asked why SouthCoast Wind has made this commitment to the community, CEO Francis Slingsby said, “None of us operates in a vacuum. All our actions, whether as individuals or the places where we work, go to school, volunteer, etc. are intertwined. So, it’s incumbent upon us to do and be good. We take pride in what we do, and how we conduct business which includes being sustainable, flexible, creative, and human.”

SouthCoast Wind has committed to grant $27 million in the region over the next ten years.

In 2022, SouthCoast Wind granted $226,000 to the South Coast LGBTQ+ Network and to Browning the Green Space. The fund supported a community center in New Bedford for the LGBTQ+ Network and 10-week training program, “ACCESS”, run by Browning the Green Space. ACCESS (Accelerating Contractors of Color in Energy for Sustainable Success) is designed for people with some experience in a trade and who are interested in starting their own clean energy business owners. The program provides business coaching, connections, mentorship, and access to capital.

SouthCoast Community Foundation

Meet the Changemaker: Francis Slingsby CEO, SouthCoast Wind

In what ways do you think wind energy can positively impact the communities in which they exist? Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you became involved in wind energy? I was born in Sweden and raised in London. I did my undergraduate studies at Oxford, then earned a master’s degree from the University of London and a law certificate from BPP Law School in London. I began my renewable energy career back in 2010 in offshore wind and now, 13 years since, I haven’t looked back.

SouthCoast Wind’s turbines are far out at sea but their positive impact on our local communities is vast. First, there are jobs. Lots of jobs. Those can be from shipbuilders to people who install and maintain the turbines, to the hotels that house them, and to the restaurants where they eat. And that’s just scratching the surface. The economic benefits locally are in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Our wind project also brings clean air benefits because it’s energy generation that is free from emissions. It’s also less expensive than fossil fuel generation – which currently accounts for more than 50% of the electricity generation here in New England. It’s also big. SouthCoast Wind, once fully built, can power over 1 million homes, which is about 40% of all Massachusetts’ housing units. Helping to mitigate the effects of climate change is another benefit. Our coastal communities are being impacted by sea level rise, bigger storms, and infrastructure damage. Wind power can help ease climate change. And did I mention the tens of thousands of jobs?

Why is SouthCoast Wind interested in investing in the South Coast region, both directly through wind energy and through its philanthropic commitment? The factor that tops the list of reasons why we are convinced the South Coast region is the place to be, is the people. The community leaders here from government, education, business, and environmental and social causes have been at the forefront of welcoming and growing an offshore wind industry cluster. Their wisdom and foresight is unparalleled. They work hard, communicate well, and are open to discussion, learning, and bringing this industry to life together.

Looking ten years into the future, what do you envision having changed in our region? SouthCoast Wind hopes to be part of the fabric of the SouthCoast. That is to say that when people talk about their jobs and communities, they can say they have either been directly or indirectly supported by our offshore wind project. We hope school children and adults alike think of offshore wind not as a novelty, but as a wonderful part of how we’re all helping to make our communities and world a better place and more importantly, that they feel good about it being such an important part of making it all happen.
