RICHARD KAY

A warm welcome to the staff, players and committee of Kidlington for tonight’s Midweek Cup game.

It wasn’t long ago that we played each other in the league with us leaving it late to win the game 3-1. I’m expecting another really tough game but hopefully not as eventful from our side. We scored in the 85th, 92nd and 95th minute to turn the game around which really helped kick start our season.

We have been on a great run winning 7 of our last 9 games in all competitions. We are playing our best football of the season and look a well organised side. Football changes quickly and we are now in a period where we are full of confidence going into every game. It doesn’t get any better than a cup game under the lights at BHP. Again the focus will be on producing another high level performance

Saturday was by far our best performance of the season to beat high flying Clanfield. The first 45 minutes was some of the best football I have managed since the re launch in 2019. My only criticism again is that being completely dominant the scoreline needs to reflect that dominance. It’s a half of football where we should be 2 or 3 goals to the good. For all our great play we need to score more goals and work the goalkeeper more when we open teams up. Defensively we have been really organised which has given us a much better platform in games.

Finally, on a sad note, it is Melvs final game with us before he heads back to Denmark permanently for family reasons. We have been lucky to have so many players over nearly 4 years that have to be recognised as club legends. Again, Melv is a club legend. His goals, especially in the 2nd half of last season fired the club to promotion and back to step 6. You couldn’t meet a better person and he has been an absolute pleasure to coach and manage.

Melv came from local Sunday football last season. Through his commitment, work ethic and attitude he has progressed to being a semi-professional footballer that defines the term “coach-able”. He is such a well loved member of the changing room and wider club. On a personal note he is a genuine diamond that I will miss around the club. I hope he sticks at it and goes from strength to strength in his native homeland.

Good luck and best wishes from everyone at the club Melv.

Once a Saint, Always a Saint

Enjoy the cup tie

SIMON

We would like to welcome Kidlington Res to BHP for our Midweek Floodlight Cup game.

It was an absolutely great result from us on Saturday! A great team performance and team spirit! The whole squad and management are buzzing for our result against a really good side who were sitting high in the league. But as I said before, we can beat anyone in this league if we perform and play with desire and hard work.

We have some talented players in our team, and young and up-and-coming talent as well. Its a very good mix, and we’re lucky to have that!

Especially Melvin Mauritson who has come into our squad, still young, and scored goals and made us a better team! Unfortunately we are going to lose him as he goes back to Denmark. I would just like to say how much of a nice chap he is as well as a top goal scorer. What a player he is, and what a player he will become! Myself and the team wish you all the best in the future buddy! We hope you can come back and watch us hopefully lift a trophy, or get into the playoffs.

So now we move onto tonight’s cup match. We have to bring the same hard work and dedication in this cup match, because as you know, cups are a one off game, so you never know what will happen. We have to be on the front foot and take our chances when we get them, hopefully winning the game early and getting us through to the next round.

The confidence around the team and management is really good. The communication is great, which helps on and off the pitch! I hope we push on and get a string of wins and we keep this momentum going.

Also, I would like to say, thank you for all of the support from the supporters for Southam United Football Club. Its fantastic to see all of this and its great for moving the club forward!

SOUTHAM UNITED 1 (Dixon 55’)

CLANFIELD 85 0

Southam United came out on top in a hard-fought contest against third-place Clanfield 85 FC with a second half goal from leading scorer Josh Dixon clinching three valuable Hellenic League points.

A long Southam clearance in the 17th minute set up Shane Osborne with a chance for the lead, but his shot was smothered by visiting keeper Luke Haley. It was Clanfield who then went closest in the 32nd, Southam being rescued by the crossbar and, despite plenty of action by both sides, it was still all-square at the break.

Ten minutes into the second half, Dixon broke the deadlock for Southam, his shot from the edge of the box taking a deflection on the way to the net. As the visitors pressed for an equaliser, Southam were indebted to keeper Lewis Hudson for keeping them in the match with a fantastic fingertip save in the 65th minute, followed by another three minutes later to stop a fierce shot from outside the box.

With a minute to go, Hudson was again on hand to

gather a high looping header and Southam held on to inflict just the third defeat of the season on Clanfield and lift themselves to 11th place in the table.

“Absolutely fantastic result and performance today to beat a

“The lads have been unbelievable since the end of August with everyone working tirelessly on and off the pitch,”

In midweek, Southam had gone down 2-0 to Midland Football League division one side Smethwick Rangers in the Birmingham FA Midweek Floodlit Challenge Cup. Having conceded two early goals, they dominated the second half without converting their chances in what has become a familiar story this season.

Southam are at home again on Wednesday when they will be looking to complete a league/cup double against Kidlington Reserves (kick off 7.45pm) and, on Saturday, are away to Hartpury University.

It’s obvious to see that you have a real thirst and joy for the game. Its something that management, teammates and supporters alike have noticed in you. Where did this attitude come from?

be honest I think it developed over the few years I had over the game, made me really want to come back and prove myself and obviously southam was the perfect setting for this, made some fantastic memories and the hunger in the whole team definitely adds to my own. >>

TAK

MELVININO!

THIS WEDNESDAY’S CUP MATCH NOT ONLY MARKS AN IMPORTANT POINT IN THE CLUB’S 2022/23 SEASON, BUT IT WILL ALSO BE THE LAST TIME FORWARD MELVIN MAURITSON SUITS UP IN THE SOUTHAM YELLOW AND BLUE AS HE PLANS TO MOVE BACK TO HIS NATIVE DENMARK. THE YOUNG DANISH STRIKER CAME TO SOUTHAM A YEAR AGO AND IN THAT SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME HE HAS PROVEN HIS VALUE TO THE SQUAD AND SCORED SOME IMPORTANT GOALS TO TAKE THE CLUB BACK TO STEP 6 THROUGH PROMOTION. A PLAYER ALWAYS PRAISED BY TEAMMATES AND MANAGEMENT ALIKE, HE WILL BE MISSED OFF THE PITCH AS MUCH AS HIS TALENT AND ABILITIES WILL BE MISSED ON IT. WE SAT DOWN WITH MELVIN TO GET SOME OF HIS THOUGHTS BEFORE HE LEAVES US TO ESTABLISH HIS LIFE BACK IN DENMARK.

Since coming to Southam United you’ve made a huge impact, not only on the field, but also off it. What have been some of your favourite memories with the team?

“On the field I think it has to be our massive turnaround since the FC Stratford game this season. We’ve really come together and turned the ship in the right direction across all aspects of the field, and I believe this squad can push easily for the playoffs this season!

Off the field I’m most proud of the charity game we

recently put on at the club for my friend’s family to raise some funds. It technically wasn’t a Southam game but it had a fantastic spirit and loads of work from everyone at the club to make it a memorable day

You were a significant part of the group that secured promotion for the club to Step 6 last season. What factors do you think were in place for you to be so successful and to come into the squad and make a difference right away?

It took a few games to get on the score-sheet during >>

10

the first season for me, and obviously as a striker you’re dying for that goal to happen. I think the biggest reason for the success I had last season was the patience and belief everyone in management, but also the whole squad had in me. It took me 4 games I think, but for all of those 4 before I scored there was so much belief that it was coming and that it’ll turn around, which eventually it did! Against Yarnton and then it was just upwards from there.

What is the best thing about being a part of this team?

For me it has to be the chemistry across the board. Everyone is supportive in the whole 17 man squad and beyond every single game. Everyone is hungry to win and everyone is super supportive. No little arguments or feuds, and that makes a massive difference once you step on the field, as we’re all in it together every week.

Since you’ve come into the club a lot of things at Southam United have grown and changed. Where do you expect to see BHP and the club when you come back and visit us?

As I said, I definitely see the boys making playoffs, whether that be this season or next. I don’t see the Saints staying in Division 1 for a long time. The quality we have in every position is fantastic and every single part of management puts in massive graft, so I’m definitely expecting to come back later this year for some playoff games or maybe at the Ricoh for a cup final ;)

16 goals for the club. Do you have a favourite?

The most memorable one from this season has got to be the stoppage time winner against Kidlington. Absolute >> scenes there. But also a special mention to my first one for the club against Yarnton. That one felt good as well. >>

Firstly, I would like thank Melv welcoming not only me, but my family, since joining the Saints. This just goes to show what a person this lad is.

His efforts on the field have always been over 100% in training and matches. I was sad to hear that he is moving away but also proud of him for following his heart.

From all of my family we wish this lad all the best and we hope we all stay in touch.

“ “ FIRST TEAM ASSISTANT LEE “BOOTS” WALKINSHAW

It’s obvious to see that you have a real thirst and joy for the game. Its something that management, teammates and supporters alike have noticed in you. Where did this attitude come from?

To be honest I think it developed over the few years I had out of the game. It made me really want to come back and prove myself and obviously Southam was the perfect setting for this. I made some fantastic memories and the hunger in the whole team definitely adds to my own.

Many people will be wondering, do you plan to keep playing when you get settled back in Denmark?

Absolutely. Playing at Southam has only made me more hungry and I am definitely going to continue my career. I have a few trials back home once I settle and then I will just see where it goes

What other plans do you have for when you move back to Denmark?

The main reason I am going back is family, so I’d say the biggest plan I have is to spend more time with my sisters and dad and just be more present in that aspect of my life!

Is there anything you’d like to say to the team, club, supporters, etc?

Just a massive thank you for welcoming me and having me. Everyone from Mike to the lads in the squad has been family to me whilst I’ve been here and I’ve got nothing but love for the whole establishment.

THANK YOU MELV!

SOUTHAM

Southam United was founded in 1905 following the amalgamation of two village teams. Southam United, or “Saints” as they are known, has a long and distinguished history

From 1947 to 1956 the club won most of the titles in the then prestigious Coventry and North Warwickshire League culminating in the Coventry Evening Telegraph Cup.

Saints moved into the Midland Combination in 1980/81 and immediately won the Division 3 title and completed the double by winning the Vase Final with a 3-1 victory over Kingsbury United. When the League was reorganised in 1983/84, United were invited into the Premier Division but after struggling for several seasons they were downgraded to Division 1 when it was discovered that their pitch was now too short owing to the construction of a bowling green next to it. It took until 1995/96 for United to get back into Premier Division football. In 1997/98 Saints enjoyed their most successful season in the Midland Combination finishing as Premier Division Runners Up and winning the Birmingham County FA Vase with a convincing 3-0 victory over Shirley Town.

All time leading goalscorer (over 1,000 goals) and record appearance holder is Bob Hancocks who served the Club loyally in virtually every capacity. In 2002 Bob and his wife Anne received a presentation from the Club to mark their over 50 years of loyal service to Southam United and their contributions to the game were finally recognised by the FA Long Service Award in June 2012.

In 2001 the Club merged with Southam Town FC, a progressive junior club formed in 1972 which, amongst other things, has pioneered Ladies and Girls football in Warwickshire. Long-term development plans have now been put into place to strengthen the football base in Southam both on and off the field.

The Club is an FA Charter Standard Community Club.

Currently, the Club’s range of junior teams runs from the Mini Soccer School (boys and girls of 5 years upwards) being introduced to the game in a fun and safe environment through the junior age groups up to the Under 16’s with some 250 players participating in coaching sessions and games throughout the season. The club also maintains a successful Wildcats and Girls section, encouraging more girls into the game and hoping to retain them for the future. This is with a view to eventually growing our own Ladies team.

Southam United are also fully committed to supporting it’s volunteer coaches and developing homegrown officials. All managers and coaches are supported in following their ambitions to complete FA coaching courses and as of the 21/22 season, the club has supported 3 of its former junior players to undertake their referee qualifications. With more to follow - subject to courses being available.

First Team results from 1998 to 2004 were largely disappointing. A sixth placed MidComb Premier Division finish in 2004/05 augured well for the future but could not be improved upon in season 2005/06 thanks to inconsistent league form. There was, however, some comparative success in Cup competitions, including an appearance in the first ever Cup Final at the Ricoh Arena, when Saints finished as Runners Up to Coundon Court in The Coventry Charity Cup.

Cup success was achieved in 2008/09 as the Club lifted the BCFA Midweek Floodlit Challenge Cup with a convincing 3 - 1 victory over Darlaston Town and again in 2010/11 with victory in the Telegraph Challenge Cup Final at The Ricoh Arena. Runners Up spot in the Premier Division was achieved in 2011/12 when the team fell away with the finishing line in sight.

In both 2012/13 and 2013/14 the Club were runners up in the BCFA Midweek Floodlit Cup; and in 2014/15 were beaten finalists in the Les James Cup at Walsall’s Banks’s Stadium and the Coventry Charity Cup at Coventry City’s Ricoh Arena.

Following a period of transition for the First Team and an absence of several seasons, the First Team successfully returned in 2018/19 playing in the Hellenic league and managed by Rich Kay. Since this time, and despite the challenge of COVID, the team have gone from strength to strength, gaining promotion and in the 2021/22 season are playing in the Oxford Senior League Premier. After one season in the OSL Prem the team was promoted to the UHL Hellenic League Division 1 at step 6 football, where they are looking to springboard to the next level.

UNITED FC

Today’s opposition

KIDLINGTON RESERVES

Kidlington FC was founded in 1909 and played local village football where rivalry was so keen that players had to prove they were residents of the village for whom they played. In 1945, Kidlington moved from village football to play in the Oxford City Junior League, with a good deal of success . By 1951 the Oxfordshire Senior League was entered, where stronger competition was provided by the likes of Witney Town, Morris Motors, Pressed Steel and Thame United.

In 1953 The Hellenic League was formed and the Oxon Senior League lost some of its stronger clubs to the new league. Kidlington won the Senior League that season and joined the new league in 1954. Early days in the Hellenic League showed quite clearly the difference in standard. Kidlington however, maintained a Premier Division place for a time, but spent most of the 60’s in Division One. The 70’s started with ‘The Greens’ winning the County Intermediate Cup. In 1976-77 a squad of good young players produced what was Kidlington’s best ever run in an FA competition. The team played every round bar one away from home and reached the last 16 in the FA Vase, eventually bowing out to Gosport Borough. The nucleus of this side eventually gained promotion back to the Premier Division in 1979-80.

The 80’s were pretty uneventful and saw Kidlington return to Division One of the Hellenic League. The early 90’s were steady. In season 1994-95, Martin Bakers Reserve side did the League and Cup double bringing some long awaited silverware back to the club, and an upturn in the first team fortunes occurred after Karl Grossmann was appointed manager, achieving top 6 finishes in four successive seasons.

The new millennium saw a major overhaul of the committee and a new Chairman in Geoff Talboys. In 2004-05, under the guidance of ex-player Kevin Walton, the first team finished in third place and achieved promotion back into the Hellenic Premier Division. With promotion came a struggle with the considerable difference in the standard of football and the team finished in a relegation position. However a national non-league restructure saved us.

In 2007/08 , First Team silverware arrived for the first time in over 30 years when we won the Floodlit Trophy under manager Paul Lee. There were additional honours that season with the Reserves winning Reserve Division One for a second consecutive season, the Youth team winning the Oxfordshire U18 Youth Cup, and Kidlington Veterans retaining their Veteran League crown.

In 2009-10 came a new Chairman, Lloyd Wray, and a new management team. Ex-player Gordon Geary was recruited to look after 1st team affairs and Barry Hiles to run the Reserve team.

Season 2010-11 saw the club achieve its most successful season ever, finishing seventh in the Premier Division, and a superb effort by all saw us play a very strong Oxford United team at the Kassam Stadium in the Final of the Oxfordshire Senior Cup, where unfortunately we lost. We did win some silverware though, beating Purton 3-0 in the final of the Supplementary Cup.

In December of season 2011-12 Gordon and Barry resigned and two senior players Danny Leggett and Christian Perkins stepped forward to guide the club through until the end of the season with the club just maintaining its Hellenic Premier Division status.

For season 2013-14 the club installed Martin Wilkinson as First Team manager and finished sixth in the league, making club history. They also reached the Senior Cup Final again, but lost to Ardley United.

Season 2014-15 saw the team finish in our highest ever league position of fourth.

Season 2015-16 was a dream come true for everyone at KFC, with Wilkinson and his team of Paul Harwood, Julian McCalmon and Jermaine McSporran, leading our 1st team to the Hellenic League Premier Division title and promotion to the Southern League. We also had our best ever run in the FA Vase where we reached the last eight and had a very healthy run in the FA Cup, losing eventually to Conference side Gloucester City. Season 2016--17, was our first at level 4 of the football pyramid in the Evo-Stik League South Division One Central but, due to work commitments, Wilkinson resigned after a month. Jermaine McSporran took over as Caretaker Manager until the club appointed Julian McCalmon as our new Manager, with McSporran and Paul Harwood as his assistants. The new manager and the team had a good season at this higher level and eventually finished in mid-table. Our reserves with Nick East as Manager, had a great season winning the Reserve Challenge Cup and finishing as runners up in the Hellenic League Division 2 West.

Due to the geographical implications from promotion/relegation, for season 2017-18 we were transferred across to the South West Division. Our reserve team achieved senior status with promotion to Uhlsport Hellenic Division One West and were also re-branded as the “Development Team “ For season 2018-19, McCalmon resigned and Ady Fuller was appointed as First Team Manager. He had to form a completely new squad ahead of the season, and due to another F.A. national restructure we transferred back to South Division One Central. After a poor start the manager resigned in mid-October and we re-instated Julian McCalmon with Joe Davies & Elliot Osborne-Ricketts as his assistants. We avoided relegation on the last day of the season.

McCalmon resigned again in January 2020 and was replaced by Ben Sadler, assisted by Paul Braithwaite. The pair led Wantage Town to promotion as Hellenic League Champions in 2019. After two seasons severely disrupted by Covid-19, 2021/22 proved challenging. A horrific injury list meant we struggled to establish a settled squad and we spent much of the season with the threat of relegation hanging over us. It is great credit to the management and players that we survived, finally finishing in 17th position. Pre season has been very positive and we are looking forward to a more successful year, led by joint managers Ben Sadler and Paul Braithwaite and assisted by Mark Massingham.

The Reserve team were moved from the Hellenic League to the Spartan South Midlands League for the 2021/22 season and had a difficult time, eventually just managing to avoid relegation. We have been moved back to the Hellenic League this season and are optimistic of being competitive with a more settled squad under the management of Nick East and Matt Stowell.
