BUILT, NOT BORN PUNAMCHAND D. KULARIA’S JOURNEY TO THE TOP

Punamchand D. Kularia’s remarkable journey is a testament to the power of vision, dedication and craftsmanship. Rising from modest beginnings, he transformed his passion for design into a thriving legacy in India’s luxury interiors industry.

WHAT DOES MY PERFECT DAY LOOK LIKE?

My day begins at 7:00 a.m.—even before my first cup of tea. My first move? Calling every project lead to check updates and troubleshoot issues. I need a clear picture of all our sites—only then can I relax. Even on the busiest days, I put in 17–18 hours of unwavering focus, often working till midnight. For me, a perfect day is one where every detail is accounted for—and nothing is left unresolved.

I was born into a family of carpenters—the Suthar community. Woodwork is not just our profession, it’s our identity. My father built with his own hands for years, and later my elder brothers followed in his footsteps. I learned the fundamentals of business by observing them. We believe in doing every task with integrity and excellence.”

ROOTED

IN TRADITION, DRIVEN BY PASSION

Punam Kularia hails from a traditional Marwari family of Rajasthan, where business acumen is second nature. His father, Sant Dularam Kularia, was a respected suthar (carpenter), and it was through watching him work with dedication and precision that he absorbed the values of trust, craftsmanship, and quality. Deep cultural and familial values shaped his entrepreneurial mindset— balancing tradition with innovation, and craftsmanship with client-centric professionalism.

BUILDING THE LEGACY— ONE PROJECT AT A TIME

Karigari is in our blood. Even with machines, I never wanted to lose the soul of handwork.” “

After studying commerce, Punam joined the family’s interior business in 2001 at the age of 24, driven by a vision to create something distinct. “I learned by observing my father and brothers. Those early years were all about absorbing.”

By 2006, he launched BNP Interiors, which has since transformed over 650+ spaces across India. His big break came with a ₹9 crore flagship project for Shopper’s Stop—offered by a friend who believed in his potential despite his lack of capital. “Just start—the money will come,” he told me. That gave him the push he needed.

Punam completed the project in just 120 days, unlocking a longterm partnership with the brand and cementing BNP Interiors' presence in the retail interiors space.

His journey in interiors began with a strong focus on retail. “Retail kept us so busy, we never looked beyond it,” he recalls. A turning point came with a project from BNP Paribas, prompting BNP Interiors' expansion into banking, IT and hospitality.

Rooted in the Suthar (carpenter) community, Punam Kularia's passion for craftsmanship runs deep.

BREAKING INTO HOSPITALITY

In 2011, a breakthrough hospitality project came calling—Novotel Pune by the Accor Group. Despite no prior hotel experience, Kularia boldly offered to build two sample rooms at his own cost. “If they liked it, we’d talk,” he said.

Delivered in 25 days, the samples impressed so much that Accor cancelled its China order and awarded BNP Interiors the full 300-room contract, completed in just four months. “We scaled using technology but preserved the soul of hand-finished work.”

This success led to a call from Ashish Jakhanwala, Founder of Samhi Group, who admired the Novotel project. Originally set to import furniture from Dubai, Ashish instead entrusted the entire Hyatt Gurgaon job to BNP. “I told Ashish, 'Once I commit, I don’t walk away until you’re satisfied.'”

Over the next 5-6 years, BNP Interiors delivered 2,600 rooms for Samhi, with Ashish playing a key role in opening new doors.

SCALING UP AND EXPANDING HORIZONS

Today, BNP Interiors is a 5,000+ strong team, with a 4.3/5 internal rating—a reflection of its people-first culture and consistent leadership. The company now operates across hospitality, healthcare, commercial, retail, and luxury residential sectors.

“We’ve worked on Asia’s largest hospital in Faridabad. Since entering the Taj Group in 2018, we’ve completed five projects and are working on nine more across their brands.” BNP

Interiors recent highlights include JW Marriott Bhubaneswar, Ranchi, and Radisson Jamshedpur. Impressively, this growth has been largely organic, built through trust and referrals.

“Our first hotel in Goa opened the doors—15–20 projects since have come purely through reputation,” he says.

With strong in-house manufacturing, BNP Interiors has become a turnkey solutions provider, managing everything from design to

execution under one roof.

“We now cater to HNIs and high-profile clients because of our commitment to quality,” he notes, attributing the company’s longevity to clarity of purpose and consistency. “Most of my clients are repeat clients. If you deliver quality and meet timelines, work will find you.”

As BNP Interiors celebrates 20 years, Punam remains grounded in the values that shaped its journey: craftsmanship, trust and vision.

We’re known for 100% commitment. We can deliver any project—at any scale.” “

A PROJECT CLOSE TO THE HEART B

NP Interiors has left a lasting impact on India’s hospitality sector, with Taj Amer, Jaipur standing out as Punam Kularia’s personal favourite. “It’s close to my heart—a rare chance to showcase intricate inlay work on a grand scale,” he says.

Today, with 28 projects underway, Taj Amer remains a defining chapter—a perfect mix of legacy craftsmanship, vision and flawless execution.” “

Despite budget trends favouring simpler designs, Taj Amer honoured craftsmanship and artistry. BNP Interiors delivered 275 rooms in 11 months, featuring 5.5 lakh sq. ft. of stonework and 900 bespoke furniture pieces, employing nearly 600 skilled artisans from Rajasthan’s Suthar community.

“It’s a record for any contractor. After Taj Amer, my confidence soared—we can take on anything.” This success strengthened BNP’s ties with IHCL, leading to multiple projects across Taj’s brands.

REDEFINING THE MARKET ONE PROJECT, ONE PARTNER

Traditionally, large hospitality projects in India were split among multiple contractors. BNP Interiors challenged this norm by proving a single company could manage entire projects endto-end without sacrificing quality or timelines.

The turning point was Taj Amer in 2022, where BNP Interiors handled everything in-house—from interiors to furniture and finishes. Since then, they’ve completed 7–8 major hospitality projects fully integrated and on schedule.

“Clients initially hired us for parts but soon trusted us with entire properties,” he notes. Today, BNP Interiors is recognised as the go-to partner for turnkey hospitality interiors, known for seamless execution, craftsmanship and reliability.

We’re reshaping how the industry delivers large-scale projects.” “

The Suthars, part of the Vishwakarma lineage, bring renowned karigari to all our major projects.”

BNP Interiors has grown from a small team of 15–20 in 2006 to 2,500 full-time workers, with capacity to scale to 5,000 for large projects. “Each growth phase matched the strength of our team,” says Punam.

What truly sets BNP Interiors apart is its deep cultural roots in Rajasthan’s Suthar community— master craftsmen whose skills span generations.

POWERED BY PEOPLE, ROOTED IN CRAFT

Artisans from traditional craft hubs like Jodhpur, Jaipur, and Bikaner are employed full-time in BNP’s factories, preserving heritage while embracing modernity. “They’re the third generation of craftsmen. I want Rajasthan’s craft traditions to thrive.”

This blend of craftsmanship and trust empowers BNP Interiors to scale responsibly—building a business that honours culture and legacy.

THE PERSONAL EDGE

PRECISION, TRUST, AND PEOPLE

For Punam Kularia, BNP Interiors’ success hinges on matching the right people to the right tasks. “Some workers are fast, others detail-oriented—assigning wisely makes execution seamless,” he explains.

Referrals

bring projects; clients become ambassadors.”

Before every project, he fosters trust through detailed client conversations, ensuring full alignment beyond budgets and timelines.

“Clients need confidence in our commitment. That trust is everything.” This approach has built lasting ties with marquee clients like Taj Hotels, BNP Paribas, Citi Bank, and HDFC, delivering nearly ₹40 crore in work over 6–7 years.

“Some collaborators from 2006 still work with me today—that speaks of our commitment and consistency.” BNP Interior’s strength lies in its in-house skilled workforce, able to mobilise 500 artisans within 48 hours, maintaining top quality without aggressive marketing.

This blend of personal care, scale, and reliability has redefined client expectations in India’s evolving interiors sector.

At the core of BNP Interiors’ philosophy is a firm commitment to Make in India—a vision Punam Kularia embraced long before it became a national campaign. In 2015, he was honoured with a Make in India award for advancing India’s design and manufacturing ecosystem. “We proudly promote the Made in India motto. The world wants quality— delivered locally,” he says.

FROM INDIA, FOR INDIA

Rejecting imports, BNP focuses on domestic production and is setting up a state-of-the-art furniture unit to craft globally competitive products made entirely in India.

My vision is to build world-class furniture— born here, made here, and built for India.” “

EMPOWERING THROUGH TRAINING AND INCLUSION

Skilled craftsmanship is BNP Interiors’ foundation, but Punam places equal emphasis on nurturing his people. Many artisans inherit skills passed down through generations, yet BNP Interiors ensures ongoing training in modern techniques for all—from factory teams to new recruits.

“I’ve worked with three generations from the same families,” Punam reflects.

BNP Interiors' inclusive approach offers opportunities regardless of formal education.

The company runs on a dual workforce: corporate teams handling design and administration, and on-site workers executing projects. “Both sides must work in harmony to create the quality we’re proud of.”

This balance sustains the Company's high standards and fosters respect for both blue-collar skill and white-collar strategy.

Integrity is crucial—when maintained, clients support and refer you.”

RISING TO THE CHALLENGE COMMITMENT UNDER PRESSURE

The interior design world demands long hours, demanding sites and tight deadlines, some pressures that Punam embraces with resilience and commitment. He believes that true commitment and transparent

communication build lasting client trust.

During the Taj Amer project, an unexpected celebrity wedding accelerated the timeline by five months. “We deployed 600-700 people and delivered nearly five months early,” he recalls.

Rather than chasing work, BNP Interiors grows through reputation. To stay calm amid chaos, Punam draws strength from his Sanatan Dharm faith, visiting local temples across India and hosting spiritual discourses. “My devotion to Krishna and spiritual practice keeps me centred and resilient.”

MY SUCCESS MANTRAS

Always be available to clients—even at midnight. Passion fuels work; without it, don’t start.

Never say no to a client’s request. Prioritise owners and top leaders—no exceptions.

Follow a path you love and hire those who share your passion. Dedication comes from enjoying your work.

Leverage employees’ strengths—assign projects only to those best suited.

Build strong relationships with owners and honor commitments. Happy clients stay loyal.

OWNER-FIRST APPROACH TO PERFECTION

At BNP Interiors, no two projects are alike. The company thrives on customisation, tailoring every detail to match the client’s unique vision. “If a client wants changes—even midway—we accommodate them. That’s why many stay with us for years,” says the expert.

Flexibility and transparency are core to BNP Interiors' philosophy. The team works directly with owners, ensuring changes are made without budget overruns.

And this trust runs deep. In Bhubaneswar, one of the clients

transferred ₹10 crore without any contract—just a handshake. “We had 100 people on-site for three months before billing. That’s the relationship we’ve built.”

BNP Interiors' success is also rooted in hands-on leadership. Punam personally visits sites, especially when timelines are tight. “I stay on-site until the job is done. Passion and clarity also keep fatigue at bay.”

Combining modern machinery with traditional craftsmanship, BNP Interiors delivers high-end projects with speed, quality and soul—building not just spaces, but enduring relationships.

Clients know we won’t surprise them with costs. That’s why they trust us.” “
Leadership isn’t just about scale. It’s about lifting others. That’s the legacy I want to build.”

LEADING WITH HEART, NOT HIERARCHY

Punam Kularia is a leader who balances business success with a strong sense of social responsibility. “My father was the pillar of our community until his passing in 2015. He even wrote a book called Vatvraksh,” he shares.

In his honour, BNP Interiors— through the Sant Dularam Kularia Foundation—allocates funds annually for education, healthcare, and emergencies, while also supporting community events.

Trust and team bonding anchor his leadership. “With over 5,000 workers, I know most by name. I have an opendoor policy, and they can call me even at midnight.” He extends interest-free loans to staff, and BNP Interiors remains proudly debt-free, driven by mutual loyalty.

Punam also backs emerging talent—like a young cricketer from an underprivileged background now playing for Gujarat.

Looking ahead, BNP Interiors plans to open a school to provide quality education for children in need.

He believes connection is the cornerstone of leadership. “I’m more a friend than a boss,” he says.

His approachable style—marked by everyday interactions, zero judgement, and genuine encouragement—has built a culture of trust and loyalty. Many employees have stayed for generations; some even retired with the company.

“By investing in people over positions, we have built not just a company—but a community.”

BUILDING RESPONSIBLY WITH INNOVATION

Marwaris have led in business because of their deep craft knowledge. I want our community to be known for mastering these skills. That’s true success.” “

At BNP Interiors, sustainability is a guiding principle, not an afterthought. “We prioritise green practices—from eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient solutions to Vastualigned designs,” says Punam.

The firm regularly undertakes LEEDcertified and platinum-rated projects, with tightly controlled production to reduce dust and pollution. “Waste is never dumped. We follow strict, sustainable protocols,” he adds.

By blending innovation with environmental responsibility, BNP Interiors is redefining responsible luxury in interior design.

While handcraftsmanship remains BNP Interiors’ hallmark, the company is embracing technology to boost speed and precision.

By merging tradition with technology, BNP Interiors is redefining timely, high-quality execution.

The Company plans to integrate AI and advanced machinery to meet tighter timelines without compromising quality. This hybrid approach will blend artisanal skill with automation, dramatically shortening delivery cycles while maintaining meticulous standards.

True success lies in standing by your people—at work and at home.” “

FUTURE FORWARD, ROOTED IN VALUES

For Punam Kularia, BNP Interiors’ next chapter is about legacy and scale—without losing sight of values. “This is our moment to build something lasting. Our work will shape the industry for the next generation.”

His bold vision: India’s largest end-to-end interior solutions factory, integrating everything from furniture to full-scale fit-outs under one roof.

Grounded in lessons from his father—“Choose the right path, and your work will never stop”—Punam is now grooming the next generation, his son and daughters.

Beyond business, he finds grounding in family, spirituality, and community. His children, trained globally, are poised to carry forward the legacy, blending tradition with new-age opportunity.
