Sophia Bunao's work Goddess Hanan
The goddess Hanan, the goddess of morning and new beginnings. It is written that goddess Hanan is the daughter of Bathala and the sister of Mayari and Tala. I drew her as the sun that signifies a new day. I drew on a sun head wear on her that signifies her morning glory every sunrise. The reflection of the sun signifies the radiance and glow of her beauty every morning dew. Everytime the sun rises, you are reminded of the glow that goddess Hanan radiates as the earth orbits around her. Her glowing eyes signifies that she sees all and all sees her, as the Earth orbits around her she displays her beauty and nourishment to those who glorify her. Her motherly gaze signifies the start of all beginnings: birth of a child, beginning of a harvest and the start of a new lunar calendar cycle. It is said that their prayers to the goddess Hanan are done at the break of dawn.

Mebuyan is the Bagobo earth, fertility, and sometimes underworld Goddess whose body is covered with multiple breasts. She lives somewhere beneath the earth in a place called “Banua Mebu’yan” or “Mebuyan’s town. Spirits visit her town for the black river inside that they use for pamalugu. Pamalugu is the act of spirits washing themselves before going to Gimokudon or the Bagobo underworld to make sure that they do not return to their dead bodies. She is said to have many breasts because she breastfeeds and cares for the spirits of dead babies before they go to the underworld to join their family members.
