As I approach my 3-year mark as the Chief Operating Financial Officer for Son of a Saint, I am thrilled to announce that 2022 was a year filled with vital experiences and opportunities for our entire Son of a Saint network. These experiences have played a significant role in our growth and success. As a result, our organizational performance remains outstanding, positioning us for a strong and promising future ahead.
I am proud to share that we experienced notable financial and operational accomplishments in 2022, raising a remarkable $4.5 million in operating revenue. Our dedication to programming is evident, as more than 70% of our expenses were allocated towards it, and we continuously strive to enhance this number. Additionally, we successfully grew our assets from $10.7 million to $12 million. It is worth noting that approximately 52% of our donated revenues, which amounted to $2,885,709, came from 15 individual and corporate donors primarily located in the city of New Orleans.
We appreciate the commitment and support of our volunteers. In the fiscal year ending December 31, 2022, they generously contributed approximately 2,225 hours of their time. Based on volunteer rates, this amounts to an estimated value of over $52,000. Their selfless contributions play a crucial role in our organization’s success and the positive impact we make in our community.
Starting in July 2022, we officially moved into our new permanent headquarters, The Ochsner Health Son of a Saint Bivian Lee, Jr. Center, located at 2803 St. Philip St. in the heart of Mid-City, New Orleans. As the project manager of the renovation, I am incredibly grateful to Ochsner Health, Hancock Whitney, Trapolin-Peer Architects, Broadmoor Construction, and countless other partners and contributors for believing in us and supporting our vision. This ‘Home For Our Boys’ has created a hub for our mentees to bond, engage, learn, and develop life skills in one familiar location, while enabling us to provide better services to our staff, improving the overall Son of a Saint experience.
I am also happy to report that our building project was completed on time and within budget, which was a tremendous accomplishment, particularly when accounting for unforeseen supply chain issues, as well as the impacts of Hurricane Ida.
Our team was also successful in qualifying the Son of a Saint headquarters building with $602,000 in historical tax credits and we sold them at face value (100%). As soon as renovation work was completed on the building, we strategized and then embarked on acquiring a duplex across the street to enable us to increase the number of mentees and staff we can support overall.
Our mentorship model remains one of our core programs, and we are proud to report that it continues to be highly successful. We currently have more than 193 active volunteer mentors, and 85% of our mentees have shown improvement in academic performance, self-esteem, and overall wellbeing. We continue to expand our program offerings to ensure our mentees have the tools and resources they need to succeed.
Lastly, we were able to add several new strategic positions, including a Logistics Coordinator to more efficiently manage the transportation of mentees across our range of programming activities. We also brought on a Senior Accountant to assist with improving our accounting standards and reporting. These critical hires continue to yield positive results throughout the organization.
Overall, 2022 proved to be a dynamic and successful year for Son of a Saint. Our team looks forward to continuing to serve our community in the years ahead.
