Después del agite decembrino con sus compras compulsivas y los compartires diarios con la familia que resultan en el delicado aumento de unas cuántas libras, les deseo que enero los haya recibido con los ánimos recompuestos, los dolores mitigados, las resoluciones cartografiadas y el equilibrio encontrado.

Además, la resaca acumulada de las fiestas por lo general se hace sentir con todo su esplendor cuando regresa la rutina carente de luces y familiares visitantes, el denominado “retorno a la normalidad” pero con la billetera afectada gracias al espíritu de generosidad papá noelesca que se instaura ineludiblemente durante la época de los villancicos.

Pero con las libras de más y los dólares de menos, queda la satisfacción de haber amado y haberse sentido amado, queda el dulce recuerdo de las risas y los llantos, queda la sutil satisfacción de saberse vivo en un nuevo año.

Por lo tanto, queremos agradecerle a nuestros lectores, para quienes todo este contenido se gesta. También queremos agradecerle a los negociantes que nos han confiado la promoción y visibilización de sus negocios, ya que consideramos que ellos se merecen plataformas de alta calidad para construir su business face. Por último, queremos reconocer públicamente el apoyo incondicional que hemos recibido de parte de nuestras familias en el proceso de la creación de la revista.

Your New Year’s Resolution

How will you fulfill your New Year's Resolutions? What are they? Have you ever fulfilled any? Here are five tips on how to stick to them and cross them off your list

W

e do it every year. Before the clock strikes 12 on December 31, we put to paper the changes we will commit to in the new year. As if tearing the last page off the calendar suddenly clears our slate, to most people a new year brings the possibility of change.

Getting fit, losing weight, eating healthier, getting out of debt, or saving money are some of the most popular New Year's resolutions.

But while making new year’s resolutions is so popular it almost feels like a rite of passage into the next year, the number of people

who actually meet their goals is slim. According to time management firm FranklinCovey, four out of five people who make New Year’s resolutions will break them. A third won’t even make it to the end of January.

Personally, I fall into the majority. This year, as I sat down to write my resolutions, I had the unsettling feeling that I was simply going through the motions of an old habit that rarely begets real changes in my life, so I decided to change my approach. Here’s what I learned from the experts on why most New Year’s resolutions fail and what to do to ensure success.

Step 1: Start Small & Build Trust in Yourself

Psychologist Joseph Luciani isn’t a fan of overachieving New Year’s resolutions that ignore underlying character flaws.

He writes in a U.S. News article, that in order to create any change in our lives, we must first endure the uncomfortable period of building self-discipline and strengthen it as if it were a muscle.

While it’s no easy feat to dig that deep, it is achievable, but he recommends we must first start small. That means that instead of focusing on huge, life-changing goals, you should focus first on the habits that are holding you back and correct those.

If, like many Americans, your goal is to get out of debt in 2020, commit to paying a fixed amount each month and set up recurring payments. Unsubscribe from all shopping newsletters to avoid temptation and try to avoid shopping in excess.

Once you start fixing those small behaviors, says Luciani, you will build up trust in yourself and your word will gain reliability.

In order to do that, though, he advises not to set yourself up for failure by promising to do things you know deep down you won’t actually do. If you know you probably won’t make it a month without your Starbucks coffee, promise to only buy it once a week instead of an unrealistic “never again.” That way you don’t break your word and it slowly starts acquiring new authority.

Gyms love January. The chain Gold’s Gym has said it sees an average increase of 40 per cent on foot traffic and gym check ins from December to January. But come February, the line at the treadmill is gone and those newly christened gym-lovers conveniently forget they signed up for an entire year’s membership.

A 2010 study by International Health Racquet and Sportsclub Association, found that gyms in the United States had more than 50 million members, who only visit 54 times a year on average, or slightly more than once a week, and that’s not counting the ones who never go.

The rush of dopamine that comes from signing up for a prolonged commitment like a gym membership or purchasing home fitness equipment can be such that it almost feels like we are doing something for our goal, but we’re just spending money and overestimating our commitment to the “this-yearis-the-year-I-finally-get-fit” resolution, say the experts.

So instead of purchasing an expensive Peloton stationary bike for your living room in a motivation high this new year, the advice is to start with what you already have and reward yourself each time you reach a milestone.

For example, you could start by committing to a daily 30 minute walk or doing YouTube workouts as you work up the discipline of exercising regularly.

Step 4: Set Yourself up for Success

Step 3: Be S.M.A.R.T. “Find a better job,” “eat healthier,” “save money,” are popular offenders each year as far as vague resolutions go, but experts say such lack of specificity almost dooms the resolution from the start.

Instead, turn your goal into a S.M.A.R.T. goal so that it’s Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound.

If your goal is to eat healthier, be specific with your goal by saying something like “I will add a side of veggies to my dinner every night,” then make it measurable by setting reminders on your phone and crossing them off every time you do it.

By doing this you are not only holding yourself accountable, but you are also getting the instant satisfaction of crossing something off your list. You can also use apps that help you track your nutrition, like My Fitness Pal. Achievable and realistic might be a bit confusing, but to make your goal attainable you must make sure that you have what it takes to reach it. That is, do you have the skills, talent, or discipline it takes to attain it?

A realistic goal, on the other hand, just asks you to evaluate whether the goal is reasonable for your life given the time you have at hand and your living circumstances. For example, if your goal is to lose 20 pounds in 2020 and that on its own is achievable, it may not be realistic to aim to workout every single day if you’ve never worked out consistently before in your life and your schedule is already tight to begin with.

Keep in mind that setting unrealistic goals only ends up in a failed attempt, which might in turn dissuade you from your goal, thus dooming that New Year’s Resolution yet another year.

Finally, make your goal time-bound by setting a beginning and an end to the period in which you will achieve your goal.

Sticking with the losing weight example, give yourself a deadline and for bonus points, divide the end goal into small steps you can achieve without becoming overwhelmed.

One of my goals for the new year is to improve my concentration skills. It is very hard for me to sit down and only do one thing without interruption for an extended period of time (by this I mean anything more than 10 minutes). My mind starts thinking about a hundred other things and my top distraction is my phone and social media.

If I’m on my computer writing something, at the first pause I make to look at the page, my mind immediately wants to grab the phone and check it. It’s compulsive and it has become a bit of an addiction, so to combat this I am doing something very simple: whenever I have to get work done, I put my phone on airplane mode. Not only that, but I put it away from my sight. Out of sight, out of mind.

But just that is not enough, and I also have to fight the impulse of pulling away from what I’m doing and checking flights to Alaska or Googling if children were fussy eaters in the middle ages.

So, if your resolve this year is to eat healthier, hide the snacks, or better yet, don’t buy them and fill your fridge only with healthy options. If you want to exercise in the morning, sleep in your gym clothes or leave them laid out the night before so you don’t have to think about what to wear and don’t make excuses. The idea is to beat yourself before you even have time to protest. Nobody knows you better than you know yourself.

Step 5: Be Kind to Yourself and Don’t Give Up No matter how much or how hard you try, the truth of the matter is that you may at some point falter. You may cave and have a second brownie, or you might skip a week or two of going to the gym. Perfection won’t help you reach your goals, but consistency will, and consistency can only work if you return to your goal even after messing up.

Cut yourself some slack when you slip and don’t think that because you messed up once you should quit altogether.

You’ll undo all the progress you achieved if you do and you will fail at reaching your goal yet again.

It might help to invite others to join in on your goal, like getting a workout buddy who helps you stay accountable.

Other people might find that going public on social media with their goal helps them stay on track. Whatever works just remember, this year could be the year you finally achieve your New Year’s resolutions. Good luck!

Pero cuando en tu soledad te detienes y lo analizas, ¿realmente estás comenzando o sólo estás continuando?

Tomando en cuenta que se ha hecho un gran trabajo de Consciencia y que en el mes anterior lograste Conectar y verificar tu crecimiento a través del contacto con los demás, sería bonito tomar este cambio de año como la oportunidad para Continuar en tu proceso de crecimiento y trabajo interno.

Porque… Cuando la música se apaga es que puedes reconocer lo que te hace verdaderamente feliz. Y es ahí donde te encuentras contigo, con tu momento presente que has venido construyendo y que seguramente cada vez tienes más frutos.

Empezar de nuevo puede dar la sensación de que lo que se dejó atrás hubiese estado mal, sería restarle valor a aquello en lo que sí invertiste, lo que creciste, lo que diste y sobretodo cuánto aprendiste a amarte y a amar.

Sin embargo, cuando le das valor a ese proceso y con certeza te sigues preguntando “¿Cómo estás?” y contestas en Coherencia, entonces logras enriquecerte y maravillarte del camino re-

corrido. Ajustar tus velas dependiendo de las nuevas metas o retos que seguro enfrentas, pero con la tranquilidad del aprendizaje interiorizado y no desde la nostalgia del tiempo pasado.

El Quechua llega a UCF

Los estudiantes de la Universidad Central de la Florida están explorando culturas latinoamericanas a través de clases gratis de quechua La Sra. Norma Ledesma, profesora de filología hispánica, comenzó las clases de quechua semanales el martes 10 de septiembre de 2019 y continuaron hasta el fin del semestre.

El quechua es una lengua indígena hablada por más de 10 millones de personas en la región central montañosa de los Andes, incluyendo países como Perú, Bolivia, Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador y Chile.

La profesora Ledesma nació y creció en Perú, y creció aprendiendo español y quechua. En las clases se enseñan frases básicas en quechua, el alfabeto, conjugaciones de verbos, y más.

“Aprender los dos idiomas mientras crecía fue muy importante para mí porque entendí la cultura,” dijo Ledesma. “La globalización está en todas partes y la gente necesita reconectarse a través de los idiomas. Espero que las clases de quechua puedan ayudar a los estudiantes interesados en aprender este idioma a conocer las creencias, costumbres y aspectos culturales tan intrínsecos en la lengua.”

Unos 15 estudiantes asisten a las clases cada semana. Si hay suficiente y sostenido interés entre los estudiantes, la profesora Ledesma dice que es posible que la clase de quechua sea ofrecida como una clase oficial en UCF tan pronto como en el otoño 2020. Por ahora las clases gratis continúan durante el semestre de la primavera de manera informal y abiertas al público: jueves de 12:00 a 13:30, en la sala TCH 358B. Muchos estudiantes como Camila Murphy, una estudiante en su último año de estudios de grado en “Interdisciplinary Studies,” asiste cada semana a las clases de quechua para poder entender las palabras más útiles en quechua cuando viaje a regiones donde hablan este idioma. “Creo que lo que ella enseña ayuda mucho para la comunicación básica, así que definitivamente voy a enfocarme en aplicar lo que ella nos enseña, fuera de clase,” dice Murphy.

La clase no solo atrae estudiantes, sino también profesores. Milagro Truyol, una profesora de español en UCF, dice que es importante aprender múltiples idiomas. “Creo que es parte de mi identidad,” comenta Truyol. “Yo soy colombiana, y siempre es bueno saber un segundo idioma. Nunca sabes dónde terminarás quedándote. Me trae algunas memorias de cuando yo estaba aprendiendo inglés.”

Ledesma espera que estas clases no solo provean un conocimiento básico del idioma y la cultura, sino que también ayuden a los estudiantes a conectarse con otros.

“Tú puedes cambiar el mundo comunicándote,” dijo Ledesma.

“Nosotros necesitamos más interacción alrededor del mundo y los idiomas interconectan a todos.”

La celebración del año nuevo revela nuestro nexo cultural al calendario gregoriano pero, ¿cuándo celebran los Mayas, Aztecas, Muiscas, Incas y Mapuches? Celebraciones, calendarios, cosmogonías y cultura

A lo Gregoriano

E

s común que los habitantes del denominado mundo occidental estemos acostumbrados al calendario gregoriano o de la Era Común, con su comienzo de año el 1º de enero, su ciclo de 365 días y ¼, y su culminación el 31 de diciembre. Este calendario obliga a sumarle un día al año cada cuatro años, como es el caso del presente año, 2020, año bisiesto.

El calendario gregoriano surgió gracias a una corrección al calendario juliano que había instaurado el emperador Julio César en el año 45 antes de Cristo cuando adaptó el calendario solar del imperio egipcio al imperio romano. Este calendario egipcio fue el primero en establecer el año de 365.25 días.

El papa Gregorio XIII modificó el calendario en 1582, después de unos estudios realizados en la universidad de Salamanca y debido al desfase de los días con relación al clima y las estaciones. Además, la búsqueda era regular el calendario litúrgico para poder realizar las oraciones en el momento debido.

La transición entre los calendarios se llevó a cabo el jueves 4 de octubre juliano de 1582 que, en vez de pasar al viernes 5 de octubre, saltó al viernes 15 de octubre gregoriano de 1582. Con esto se recuperaron los diez días que quedaron rezagados y acumulados durante los más de mil años del uso del calendario juliano.

Este calendario tuvo eco inmediato en Portugal, España e Italia.

Así mismo, las colonias españolas y portuguesas adoptaron la nueva medición del tiempo. En pocas palabras, el mundo católico adoptó el nuevo calendario, y tomaría otros dos siglos para que los mundos protestante, anglicano y ortodoxo lo adoptaran.

¿Y los Otros Calendarios?

El calendario gregoriano tuvo una aplastante acogida mundial, por lo que los demás calendarios del llamado nuevo mundo quedaron relegados a segundos y terceros planos a pesar de que algunos fueran mil veces más antiguos, como es el caso del calendario maya. Algunos llegaron al olvido, pero otros penden del hilo de la tradición oral, mantenidos con vida gracias a la transmisión de la sabiduría ancestral a través de la comunión y la palabra.

Vale preguntarse, ¿cómo sería hoy el mundo y su cotidianidad si hubiese primado el calendario de la Piedra Choachí de los Muiscas o la Piedra del Sol de los Aztecas, o el Tzolkin y Haab de los Mayas?

Por ejemplo, los Mayas y los Aztecas contaban con un calendario solar y otro lunar. El lunar era un calendario sagrado que consistía de 260 días y servía para llevar la cuenta de los rituales. El solar era de 365 días y servía para llevar la cuenta de los días. Cada 52 años, ambos calendarios coinciden para completar la Rueda Calendárica. Además, existe otro ciclo llamado 13 Baktun, el de Cuenta Larga, y este mide un período de 5,125 años. Este gran ciclo de Cuenta Larga culminó el 21 de diciembre del 2012 y por eso todo el frenesí de la interpretación apocalíptica del calendario Maya, pero en realidad no era más que la culminación de un largo ciclo.

De haber primado el calendario Maya, habríamos celebrado en grande el cierre del gran ciclo de 5,125 años y en este momento esta-

ríamos en el séptimo año de la nueva era. En teoría ahí estamos, sólo que nuestra cultura actual se queda corta en darle la importancia que amerita la proeza astronómica.

En este sentido, la renovación de ciclos heredados de una cosmogonía europea monoteísta reduce las posibilidades celebratorias y ata a una sola forma de ver el mundo. Este hecho tiene un lado positivo, que es el de unificar la cultura y así mismo los rituales. Pero, por otra parte, es negativo ya que el carácter reduccionista no tiene un efecto minimalista sino limitante, y hasta podría decirse que castrante y censurante.

Sería interesante, entonces, que por lo menos incluyéramos alguno de los rituales extraviados, ya que de esa manera podríamos acercarnos a la cosmogonía silenciada, y así mismo nutrir nuestra percepción de la existencia.

En una nota personal, lo que más me interesa de la cristiandad es la profesión del amor, del budismo la unidad, del hinduismo la omnipenetrancia, y de las culturas nativas de América su vínculo con la naturaleza. Para los indígenas del nuevo continente, la esencia de los dioses estaba compenetrada con los elementos, los cuerpos astrales, los alimentos, las estaciones y la tierra. La denominada Pacha Mama, Hischa Uaia o Madre Tierra provee todo lo necesario para la vida humana. En ella se habita, por ella se alimenta, para ella se vive.

Por otra parte, el sol, la luna y las estrellas adquieren valores divinos.

La voz de los astros establece el ciclo agrícola y avanza el gran giro de la vida. El agua, el fuego y el viento son aliados espirituales y los taitas o abuelos son la voz de la sabiduría ancestral, la voz de la experiencia acumulada, aquello que merece un oído así sea por prudencia y respeto.

A través de estas cosmogonías se abre la puerta hacia la gratitud por existir y hacia aquellos detalles que dan gusto vivir.

¿Cuál es el calendario correcto?

El calendario más aceptado a nivel mundial, el que gobierna el mercado y las festividades laicas y religiosas, el calendario de París, Cali y Orlando es el gregoriano. Pretender reemplazarlo por alguno de los anteriores carece sentido práctico, pero reencontrarse con aquellos calendarios sí permite ampliar el sentido de pertenencia y de propiedad cultural.

Un calendario es una forma de relacionarse con el mundo, el tiempo y el universo, es la manera de establecer ritmos de rito, forjar identidad y cultivar cultura. Borrar un calendario es semejante a tachar la espina dorsal de la historia de una sociedad, es un comienzo de la desaparición de un saber y una ciencia. Es el extravío de una forma de ser.

Dado que la intención es cultural y de encuentro raizal, vale la pena apelar a la curiosidad propia. Por ejemplo, ¿qué día cumplo años según el calendario Mapuche? ¿Cuál es mi nawal de acuerdo con mi fecha de nacimiento? ¿Cuándo es mi aniversario Azteca? ¿Qué significados acarrea el día de la muerte de mi abuelo para los Incas?

La identidad es un proceso que requiere el encuentro con nuestra procedencia, y aún si ya sabemos quiénes somos, siempre existe la posibilidad de descubrir que se es algo más.

Nace una alianza necesaria entre la academia y el mundo profesional

l 19 de diciembre, la Puerto Rico Society of Certified Public Accountants Florida Chapter dio a conocer su alianza estratégica con la Universidad Ana G. Méndez en un auditorio de la misma universidad en el marco del comienzo de un ciclo de conferencias y seminarios educativos dirigidos a los estudiantes de Administración de Empresas.

El orador Gustavo Torres Deco, Contador Público Autorizado y actual presidente de la junta del Capítulo de Florida, informó sobre la importancia de educar a la comunidad en general respecto a las funciones de los CPA. Además, proveyó información general sobre temas relacionados a los impuestos, como por ejemplo aspectos de excención, rebajas, preparación y declaración de impuestos.

Gustavo explicó el aval de seguridad y tranquilidad que un CPA provee al regirse por un código de ética que los responsabiliza frente a todo manejo de cuentas que realicen para empresas y personas naturales.

Por otra parte, la Directora María del Rosario recibió con entusiasmo y gratitud la alianza con la sociedad y expresó que los estudiantes recibirán una experiencia invaluable que les dará un edge respecto a otros futuros Administradores.

Deisamar Soto, presentadora del programa Haciendo Negocios, introdujo a los oradores. Gustavo y María del Rosario auguraron una relación próspera y duradera que traerá grandes beneficios para ambas organizaciones.

odos los pagamos, pero el tema no es ligero ni falto de complejidad. Cada nuevo año hay que presentarle al Servicio de Impuestos Interno (IRS por sus siglas en inglés) nuestra declaración de impuestos para que el gobierno tenga dinero para sus gastos (el dinero de nuestros impuestos paga carreteras, escuelas, programas de subsidios, etc.).

Los impuestos se pagan de tres maneras: 1) a través de retenciones mensuales de dinero en la nómina de un empleado; 2) por medio de pagos de impuestos estimados (para las personas independientes que estiman un ingreso anual y pagan impuestos por adelantado); y 3) por pagos que se hacen al presentar la declaración de impuestos anual.

El conocido reembolso que alegra a tantas personas alrededor de abril o mayo ocurre cuando se paga más durante el año que lo que se debe. Es común que esto suceda cuando un empleador saca más de lo necesario del cheque del asalariado debido a que las retenciones están basadas en un estimado de cuánto debe pagar, pero no siempre reflejan todos los créditos y deducciones que tendrá cuando presente su declaración. ¿Qué tanto sabe usted sobre los impuestos? Y INGREDIENTS For the filling: » Chicken Bouillon (2 packets or 4 fresh cups) » 1 lb of skinless chicken breast » ½ cup of Mayonnaise (Real or Light) » 2 lemons » 2 teaspoons of fresh cilantro finely chopped » 1 avocado in small squares » Favorite all-purpose seasoning with turmeric For the Arepa: » 2 cups of Arepa Harina (you can also use freshly ground corn) » 1 teaspoon of salt » 2 teaspoons of olive oil

PREPARATION Filling 1. Boil 4 cups of water.

2. Dissolve the chicken bouillon packets in the water (In case you are using fresh bouillon, bring to a boil the 4 cups of bouillon).

3. Add chicken and cook for 20 minutes.

4. Cool chicken in refrigerator.

5. Once cold, shred the chicken.

6. In a bowl, mix the mayonnaise, lemon, cilantro and all-purpose seasoning (according to taste).

7. Delicately incorporate the avocado to the mix.

8. Cool mix in refrigerator.

Arepa 9. In a bowl, mix the Arepa Harina and salt. Add 2½ cups of warm water, stir until combined and let sit for a few minutes.

10. Knead dough until it doesn’t stick in your hands.

11. Form small balls and flatten them to ½ inch thick arepas.

Combination 12. Moist with oil a large skillet at medium-high heat.

13. Cook the arepas until golden brown on both sides.

14. Slice the arepa horizontally, as if opening a pocket.

15. Stuff with the filling.

16. Serve with a cold beverage and enjoy.
