Con la llegada de los primeros fríos surge la necesidad de abrazar a los seres queridos.

Ese calor humano que le da matices de sentido a la vida y que se vuelve la fuente de energía para continuar haciendo lo que sea que se está haciendo.

Como es tradición en Estados Unidos, el sacrificio del pavo se avecina para traer la comunión familiar alrededor de la mesa.

Pero, surge la ineludible pregunta: ¿qué comemos los hispanos durante el Thanksgiving?

Voy a suponer y me perdonan si caigo en estereotipos inadecuados. El colombiano comerá tamal relleno de pavo o arroz con pavo. El mexicano se preparará unos tacos al pastor de pavo. Los salvadoreños comerán pupusas de pavo. Los argentinos asarán el pavo. Los venezolanos explorarán la arepa con pavo. Los peruanos harán una chaufa o ceviche con pavo. El puertorriqueño y el dominicano probarán las alcapurrias de pavo. El cubano saboreará el pavo en mojo. Y el español acompañará el vino con unas tapas de pavo.

A la larga, lo que importa es el festín y el calor de las risas y el tintineo de las copas en brindis y la voz de Héctor Lavoe o Juan Luis Guerra o Rubén Blades o Diomedes Díaz o Carlos Gardel o Vicente Fernández sonando en el estéreo: la complicidad amorosa de la familia.

Y dentro de esta sinfonía de cubiertos contra los platos, de carcajadas que dejan sin aire, de cinturones que se desabrochan, surge la armonía con una nueva cultura, emerge la melodía de un nuevo americano.

Así mismo llega el día de las velitas, se acercan los villancicos y las pastorelas, se avecina la natilla, el buñuelo y el pan de jamón. Y eso que con esta edición sólo

cubrimos hasta el 14 de diciembre pues la navidad y el año nuevo le corresponden a la sexta edición.

Ana Cristina Carmona: La Venezolana Impulsa-Talento

Conoce la historia de inmigración de esta joven venezolana.

Ana Cristina Carmona lleva menos de 3 años en Orlando pero ya se ha dado a conocer a través de sus redes sociales como una mujer impulsa-talentos gracias a los bazares que organiza con frecuencia para que los emprendedores hispanos expongan sus productos y se den a conocer.

rlando es una ciudad internacional donde día a día llegan no sólo turistas en busca de un famoso ratón, sino también inmigrantes con sueños y miedos que dejan atrás todo lo que conocen para buscarse una vida mejor. Con la crisis de Venezuela, llegan centenares de venezolanos a esta ciudad.

Ana Cristina Carmona, de 30 años, fue criada en Barquisimeto, Venezuela, y quizás como muchos de sus compatriotas que hoy en día se encuentran regados por el mundo, jamás pensó en salir de su país, pero el declive progresivo de Venezuela hizo que poco a poco la vida se fuera poniendo más difícil, las oportunidades más escasas, y la inseguridad cada vez más atrevida.

No es fácil encontrar una cifra exacta de cuántos venezolanos residen ahora en Orlando, pero según el Pew Research Center, entre el 2000 y 2017, hubo un aumento de un 352 por ciento en la población de venezolanos en Estados Unidos. Pasaron de ser 93,000 a 421,000 en ese período, con la mayoría residiendo en Florida.

Orlando y Miami son sin duda de las ciudades que más reciben venezolanos, pero muchos prefieren Orlando por el menor costo de vida. Así que esta ciudad se ha convertido en el nuevo destino predilecto de aquellos venezolanos que deciden salir de su país.

Como ellos, hace dos años y medio, Ana Cristina y su esposo, Nelson Chacón, decidieron dejar atrás su tierra para buscar nuevos horizontes en Orlando, donde la joven pareja se ha establecido y ha encontrado un nuevo hogar lejos del que siempre conocieron.

La Llegada

Ana Cristina es licenciada en relaciones industriales en el área de desarrollo humano, o Human Resources, como se llama aquí en Estados Unidos. En Barquisimeto trabajaba en el área de recursos humanos del periódico El Impulso, un periódico de su familia que es a su vez el diario más antiguo de Venezuela con 115 años de publicación continua, pero que recientemente tuvo que cesar su versión impresa por la escasez de papel contra la que luchan desde hace varios años.

Era el 2011 y cuenta Ana que por ese entonces en Barquisimeto la práctica de organizar “bazares” para promover productos y servicios de emprendedores se había vuelto popular. Aprovechando tanto las instalaciones de El Impulso como el hecho de que ya existía una cultura en la comunidad de congregarse ahí, Ana, junto con su mejor amiga, Laura Lozada, decidieron organizar su propio bazar.

“Un bazar es algo que ya ha existido. Ya existe en varias partes del mundo. Tiene distintos nombres, pero no es nada más que un lugar donde uno reúne talentos o emprendedores de distintos rumbos y vienen las personas a comprar cosas que no consiguen en los centros comerciales, en un ambiente rico, agradable, sumamente familiar,” explica Ana. Las dos amigas empezaron a compartir sus bazares en la red social Instagram, bajo la marca “Expo Bazar” con fotos de los eventos.

Mientras tanto, Ana no paraba de moverse. Hacía tarjetas artesanales y tenía una tienda de ropa junto con su esposo, además de trabajar medio tiempo en el diario de la familia.

“Detesto estar amarrada en una oficina. No es lo mío. Soy callejera, me encanta relacionarme, me encantan las ventas, siento que soy una turca andante,” dijo.

Después de algunas ediciones de los bazares, Ana y Nelson decidieron salir de Venezuela. Como ella misma cuenta, las dificultades de la vida diaria empezaron a afectar su estado de ánimo.

“A mi esposo se le metieron a la casa. Un año antes le robaron la camioneta. Pero también era el tema del racionamiento de luz. El hecho de lo más sencillo: que no puedes hacer una transferencia, que no hay internet, te acercas a la taquilla a pagar el servicio de luz pero no hay sistema. Yo sentía que yo me iba a enfermar, todo el tiempo estaba molesta.”

Al salir de su país, Ana descubrió un sentimiento de culpa por dejar su tierra:“Tú te sientes mal al venirte. Que tú hayas tenido la oportunidad y la bendición y que Dios te haya permitido estar acá... tú te sientes mal por la gente que no pudo salir,” dijo. “Como que abandonaste tu tierra en el peor momento, pero el tiempo te va enseñando a sanar eso y a darte cuenta que sigues trabajando por tu país.”

Buscándose la vida en Estados Unidos

Ana y su esposo llegaron con la determinación de quienes deben reinventar su vida. Mientras Nelson, ingeniero, trabajaba en un hotel, Ana, por su parte, hizo Lyft, cuidó niñas e hizo lo que fuera necesario mientras encontraba algo más estable.

Pero Ana no iba a dejar perder el trabajo que ya llevaba adelantado en Venezuela con “Expo Bazar,” y decidió renombrarlo a “Expo Talento,” con la determinación de continuarlo aquí en Orlando.

“Yo desde Venezuela había seguido a varios venues y les había escrito en español y en inglés. ‘Yo tomo fotos, me encantan los eventos,’ con tal de estar en ese mundo que me encantaba, pero nadie me respondió.”

Se autodenomina “intensa,” por no decir “persistente,” y fue gracias a su insistencia que después de cuatro intentos, la dueña de Zoe Events, Graciana Silva, le respondió y le ofreció trabajo en su otra empresa, una escuela sin relación a los eventos. Aún así, Ana trabajó con Graciana unos meses mientras le seguía proponiendo organizar su primer bazar, edición Orlando, hasta que finalmente Graciana se convirtió en su socia de eventos y surgió el primer bazar.

De nuevo, Ana Cristina volvió a tocar puertas vendiendo su idea del bazar, esta vez para conseguir expositores.

“Fueron como 15 expositores y si acaso fueron de visita como 10 personas,” dijo Ana. “Eso dio demasiado sentimiento, pero yo me sentí tranquila porque era mi primera vez y la de todos los que estaban. Ellos creyeron en mí, pero lo que más me pareció especial es que la segunda vez varios repitieron.”

Así ha seguido creciendo Expo Talento, que ya ha tenido más ediciones aquí que las que tuvo en Venezuela y con Ana Cristina como portavoz e imagen principal.

“Este país te reta todos los días. En Venezuela uno está acostumbrado a la comodidad, hasta que te pongan la gasolina en el carro. Aquí no. Aquí o me quedo llorando y triste o extrañando, o me pongo las pilas, pierdo el miedo, me atrevo, me instruyo por supuesto para no cometer errores, pero cada quien está construyendo su futuro. Todos estamos al tanto de que sigue llegando gente, siguen reinventándose, mujeres con niños que simplemente quieren hacer algo que les guste y quieren producir,” dijo Ana. “Yo me veo como un canal para apoyarlos y para que ellos me apoyen a mí.”

Quizás gran parte del éxito de Expo Talento en Orlando es debido a la consistencia con la que Ana Cristina publica en sus redes, donde todo lo relacionado con Expo Talento va entrelazado también a ella misma, a sus reflexiones de vida y escenas del día a día.

Ana Cristina permanece activa en las redes sociales, siempre sonriente, promoviendo futuros eventos y también como una influencer de la comunidad hispana de Orlando, dando a conocer productos que le envían, negocios que visita y muestra en sus cuentas de Instagram y YouTube.

Dejó atrás el pánico escénico que la envolvía tanto anteriormente y superó sus miedos de hablar en público y dar su cara en las redes, pues descubrió que siendo “una hormiguita más” en este país y mostrándose ella misma, iba a ser la mejor manera de dar a conocer su marca y de conectarse con esta nueva comunidad.

“Siento que las redes están muy perdidas. Todo es muy superficial. Si eres la más grosera, eres la más famosa o si eres la más vulgar. Respeto eso, tiene su público, pero quiero dejar un mensaje de ser más natural, más normal, mostrar una vida real, siempre llevando el concepto de vivir bonito, de recomendarte sitios chéveres y de apoyar el talento,” dijo Ana. “Lo que yo publico no es una fantasía, es sólo parte de mi vida.

Yo también sigo siendo aquí una trabajadora, estoy luchando por mis sueños, estoy guerreando también como nadie y por eso se me ha hecho fácil entender a otros, porque el hecho de ser inmigrante me ha hecho crecer como persona.”

Es precisamente por esa misma idea de entender a los demás, que a Ana se le ocurrió uno de sus otros proyectos que realiza junto con su amiga y también emprendedora, Sandra Frometa: un compartir mensual con otras mujeres emprendedoras de la ciudad.

“Es tomarnos un café y estar más face to face con esas personas que quizás conoces por las redes, saber cómo comenzamos, cómo conseguimos nuestros contactos. Se crea un networking y nos apoyamos y seguimos entre sí sin tanto protocolo ni ningún costo,” explica Ana.

Cuestión de Actitud

A punto de cumplir tres años fuera de su país, Ana Cristina afronta el duelo de estar lejos de casa y en un país nuevo con una buena actitud.

“Yo nunca pensé ser inmigrante, pero lo soy y decidí seguir haciendo lo que hacía en Venezuela y lo logré. Para eso la actitud es demasiado importante. Yo me considero una persona muy positiva a pesar de haber vivido muchas cosas. No todo es felicidad, no todo ha sido alegría. Si algo no me está saliendo bien, le doy la vuelta y veo otro camino. El inglés ha sido clave y ayuda mucho, también,” dijo ella.

Tiene muy claro su norte. A pesar de tener su nine to five, Ana trabaja todos los días en su emprendimiento y también en su pintura, pasión que se le despertó aquí en Estados Unidos.

Dice que quizás si se hubiera quedado en Venezuela, no habría descubierto todo lo que ha aprendido en este tiempo. La Ana Cristina de hoy es muy diferente a la que salió de Venezuela.

“Leí hace poco Ser inmigrante es para siempre y digo, Dios mío, cómo es eso de para siempre. Tú cambiaste para siempre, y lo ideal es que sea para mejor.”

llega el momento en que decides avanzar, tomar las riendas de tu Ser y lanzarte al vacío con la esperanza de conseguir aquel preciado sueño.

Siendo consciente de ese momento presente que te llena de emociones, pensamientos y que a pesar de las dudas te invita a seguir.

Ese momento actual en el que decides tomar y aceptar lo que es “Tu Presente”. Un magnífico regalo que tienes en tus manos cuando te haces responsable de quien eres y empiezas a caminar en coherencia y conciencia del lugar mental, físico y emocional que ocupas, pero sabiéndote preparado para enfrentar el siguiente reto.

Y es ahí donde surge la pregunta… ¿A dónde vas? ¿Ya ajustaste tu “GPS” interno y estás listo para continuar con la aventura? ¿Reconoces que el poder está en ti y que en coherencia estás dispuesto a escribir la historia de tu vida en un caminar diario, consciente y feliz?

Y siendo coherente en ese caminar es importante que sientas y sepas hacia dónde vas. ¿Cuál es ese sueño preciado que te impulsa a levantarte

cada día? Los sueños no se cumplen, sino que se trabajan.

Son ellos el faro que a lo lejos te muestra el terreno que quieres conquistar y el tesoro que con valentía estás dispuesto a ganar.

Saber ese lugar a donde te quieres llevar es lo que te va a permitir sobrepasar las dificultades, limpiarte las heridas y, con el corazón lleno de ilusión, continuar.

Ese es tu camino, tu historia y tu tesoro.

Ahí está la vida que verdaderamente viniste a vivir. La que cada día se escribe desde el corazón, con razón y en acción determinada.

Esa por la que estás dispuesto a luchar día a día y de la cual te sientes orgulloso al caer la noche. Esa que a pesar de las dudas estás dispuesto a enfrentar porque es la tuya.

Allá, a donde quieres ir, hay un tesoro maravilloso esperando por ti, pero en el camino que te labras día a día están las memorias que irás incluyendo en tu maleta y que serán las que, al llegar, te harán volver a sonreír.

Disfruta el camino y avanza con la certeza de que si te tienes y si decides avanzar, vas a llegar.

ablemos un poco sobre las particularidades de nuestro idioma.

Para un angloparlante puede resultar bastante complejo aprender nuestro versátil idioma cuando se trata de expresiones y cuando las palabras adquieren significados particulares dependiendo de la región.

Es claro que esto también pasa cuando nosotros los hispanohablantes decidimos aprender inglés, pero ya verán que los aspectos de regionalismo y de país hacen que surjan dialectos particulares a un nivel que devenga en humor y que hoy comenzaré a resaltar a través de esta columna: Nuestro idioma y sus vainas.

Hoy hablaremos de la palabra ‘Papaya’. ¿Y por qué la palabra papaya? Primero por razones ilustrativas en cuanto a las grandes diferencias de significados entre las culturas, y luego por el hecho de que es una de las frutas nativas que más abundan en nuestro continente americano.

Primordialmente hablemos del primer significado. La palabra papaya proviene de la palabra maya páapay-ya que quiere decir zapote jaspeado. Esta castellanización del término dio como resultado la palabra papaya para aludir a la fruta de interior anaranjado y piel verde cuando está viche y amarilla cuando está madura.

La papaya es una fruta que contiene unas propiedades benéficas para regular la digestión y combatir el estreñimiento, y en países como Nigeria se ha utilizado el extracto de hoja de papayo en la medicina tradicional para combatir la malaria y ahora ha sido demostrado científicamente.

Ya de lado el significado más común, es hora de adentrarse en los significados regionales. En países como Chile, Ecuador, Perú y Venezuela existe el significado aceptado de “fácil” o “sencillo” por lo que se puede implementar para indicar que alguna acción carece dificultad, como por ejemplo “Juzgar a los demás con estereotipos es papaya” o “Hoy la salida de Orlando por la I-4 sur está papaya.”

Por otra parte, en Colombia existe la frase “Dar papaya” que quiere decir darle a alguien la oportunidad para que se aproveche de algo, por lo tanto, su significado está cargado con una connotación negativa. Por ejemplo, “El pueblo le dio papaya a sus gobernantes para que fueran corruptos y salieran impunes,” o “A ese gringo lo robaron por dar papaya. Lástima que nadie le avisó que

no se metiera por esa calle.” También puede funcionar en frases picarescas, como por ejemplo “Si ella (él) me da papaya, me la (lo) como.” Pero también existe para indicar que algo estaba de fácil acceso y tiene una connotación ladronesca como por ejemplo “Ese dejó sus cosas de papayita. ¡Te vi!”

Otra aceptación popular en Colombia es la de “pasar al papayo” que quiere decir morirse, o “que lo pasen al papayo” que quiere decir que lo maten, pero además también significa querer poseer sexualmente a alguien. De modo que tenga cuidado al decirle a alguien “Te quiero pasar al papayo,” no vaya a ser su enemigo y se confundan o así mismo no vaya a ser su objeto del deseo y reciba rechazo.

De igual manera, en países como Cuba y México, la palabra adquiere una connotación sexual y hace referencia a la vagina.

Este detalle puede ocasionar situaciones incómodas cuando uno como colombiano entra a una frutería cubana y dice “Buenas, doña, ¿me puede dar una papaya tierna y jugosa?” Así mismo, en México, utilizan un albur o juego de palabras bastante sutil para referirse a una mujer hermosa al decir “¡Papaya de Celaya!”

Hay una expresión guatemalteca y panameña para resaltar las acciones mismas de la papaya, como “caer como una papaya” para indicar una fuerte caída como por ejemplo “Mi abuelita se cayó como una papaya, se partió la cadera y ahora están culpando a Marielita de haberla empujado”.

También está la expresión ecuatoriana “creerse la divina papaya” para referirse a alguien que se sobreestima en términos de belleza, como por ejemplo “¡Alábate burro que nadie te alaba! Este Narciso se cree la divina papaya y no es más que un guajolote.”

De modo que si está en Cuba no dé papaya y pida frutabomba y si está en México no dé pechito y pida lechosa al igual que en Venezuela y República Dominicana. En Argentina, Uruguay y Paraguay pida mamón. Y en Bolivia tenga cuidado, no vaya a terminar preso por demanda de estupefacientes.

The Surreal and Symbolic Satire with Michael Irrizary Pagan

Michael Irrizary Pagan is a Nuyorican artist currently living in St. Cloud.

Through his art he explores the psychological underpinnings of our culture by implementing surrealist and caricaturesque techniques to unveil the madness he perceives in society. Elements of symbolism and satire pervade his work, the necessary humorous treatment to trigger catharsis.

The road towards painting (Brief Bio in Technicolor) ichael Irrizary Pagan, M.I. Pagan, was born in Manhattan, New York, at the oldest public hospital in the United States: Bellevue Hospital. His parents were from Ponce, Puerto Rico. They divorced during Michael’s childhood. This event drove him, his brother and mother to his grandparent’s house on his mom’s side. It is during this time that Michael starts becoming acquainted with art.

His grandfather printed postcards on an old press and was prolific at calligraphy while his uncle was a master woodworker. Also, since his mother had to work two to three jobs and would take the boys with her, she would always keep them busy with pencils, colors, clay and crayons, sketching, doodling, sculpting and drawing to pass time.

Michael recalls “We’d be sitting in a little cubby hole somewhere, occupying our time instead of being out in the street in danger.”

As a child people would call him an introvert because he kept everything in. The teachers noticed his silence and said he had some sort of psychological problem, so they took him to a counselor. The counselor noticed she couldn’t get anything out from him by talking, so she handed him some papers with pencils and color pencils. He started drawing and the counselor said, “There’s nothing wrong with him, this is the way he expresses himself.”

While growing up in Manhattan, he experienced a cultural rivalry and competition which boiled between different neighborhoods, but which ultimately started driving him towards art. “In Manhattan every neighborhood is a different culture, so you’re battling against everybody else to become something. I did sports, I did everything, but the one thing that fascinated me the most was painting or drawing or sketching, because it took me away from all of that, and everybody seemed to like it too. It was something that if you did, it was amazing because they couldn’t do it. And they would wonder how you did this, how you did that. ‘Can you draw me this?’ ‘Can you do that?’ And I would do that.”

This vocation calling became an escape to his surrounding reality,

“At that time everybody was battling each other for attention. Who’s this and who’s that in the neighborhood. It was crazy. Doing art took me away from all of that. I didn’t have to think about that stuff. I can do stuff and enjoy doing it and not be involved with all the rest of the madness.”

However, he felt strongly inclined towards sports. He played basketball for Louis D. Brandeis High School and received a variety of scholarship offers from different schools to play with them. Yet life struck down his sports career in the form of a submarine undercut which dislocated his spine. The doctor told him he wouldn’t be able to play sports for the rest of his life. He recounts, “I was sitting there at home, popping pills, when I said, ‘What am I gonna do?’ So I started drawing. Because I got that from my mom ‘Ah, well then draw! I’ll express this and do that.’”

In the neighborhood he learned to be quiet and observant. He would look at the people, their manners, the convoluted march of life.

He would analyze behaviors and fall into a reverie in front of details, “I would see figures in cracks in the walls, faces, eyes and stuff. And how would you put that down without people thinking that you’re a damn nut?”

He entered a drug program that functioned as a sanctuary from the neighborhood. All of his friends were in there that summer too. He started drawing and people started saying “Well, you got something there. Why don’t you continue doing this?”

However, Michael didn’t think much of it, but decided to take up an art appreciation course while in college. For the final project of the course the professor asked them to copy a masterpiece and write a paper on it. He went to the MET and copied Rembrandt’s Aristotle contemplating the bust of Homer using crayons, ball pens and magic markers. To his astonishment, the professor gave him an A-plus for the class and told him, “The work was incredible. You should consider taking up some art courses and see where it takes you, because you have a knack here, something’s here.”

He decided to follow her advice and enrolled in art workshops. He

studied under the wing of the starving artists of the Greenwich Village area and Soho in lower Manhattan. He learned from them the ways of the artist. He saw how they did what they did in order to live. “One thing they always told me that I always remember was-- In Manhattan alone, at that time, there were 79,000 artists registered. Out of those, 2,000 were making a living, the rest worked all different kinds of side jobs to make ends meet.”

Yet there were three defining moments which taught him the greatest lessons he would later on apply in his incessant confrontation against the canvas. The first moment was when a professor took his final project, a clay lady reclining on a sofa, and flung it across the classroom, blasting it against a clay-splattered target painted in the wall. Michael stood dumbfound in front of his professor not knowing how to react and the professor said “You’re passed.” Michael answered “What the hell is this?” “Well, you’ve learned something,” “Oh, yeah, what did I learn?” “You learned that once it’s completed it’s no longer yours, and once it’s destroyed you just create again. And by learning that, you’ll always create something else. So you create and destroy, create and destroy. And by doing that, that process builds upon making something better. Because it’s just like chaos and creation, you go through the chaos in order to create something.” “Ok, I passed the class.”

The second was when an oil painting professor would set up a still life for the apprentices before they walked into the room. Once inside, he would have them choose an easel and start painting the still life.

The professor would walk around the room and if he didn’t like what he saw, he would say “Let me help you,” he would grab the canvas, set it on the floor, pour turpentine over it to erase it and say “Start again.”

Michael says people would go mad when the professor did that, but he realized something fundamental: “What he’s showing you is that it’s not that important. You just keep doing and keep working on it. And if it gets damaged, well that’s not a problem, continue.”

The third and greatest lesson came when he presented his senior project. All of the art students had to do a show, so he thought about Jackson Pollock’s drips and stains and came up with what he thought was a clever idea: he took scraps of canvas with paint that were on the floor, he burned the edges and collaged them onto a larger canvas.

He then drew on top and awaited the reactions of his mentors, but instead, they remained chatting in the teacher’s lounge smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee.

Michael retells “So I walk up to them and I say ‘Well, what’s the matter? I’m not getting a reaction or nothing.’ So my professor looks at me and says ‘Go cut off an ear.’ And that was it. And I sat there trying to figure out what the hell does it mean ‘go cut off an ear’, and he says ‘You sacrificed, you did, now what? You continue. You used other people’s methods and made something out of it, Ok, so now you’re there. So now, what do you do? Do you continue or not?’ I thought that was one of the greatest lessons that I learned. You may think that the work you do is incredible, and maybe it’s not. It all depends on the eye of the beholder. But if you don’t use the technical skills that you have to portray that and to put that message out, it’s not gonna work.

My images, I want them to carry a message, otherwise why paint it.”

Knowing that so few artists were living off their art in a city crammed with talent, Michael took regular jobs and kept to himself, this way no one messed with him and he could make ends meet without renouncing to his art. People thought he had mental issues, but he was absorbing the ways of people’s lives, feeding the creative spirit. Later on, Michael explored art therapy because he found interesting how colors, shapes and symbols had different meanings for different people.

However, he got married and deviated from art. The marriage collapsed and he joined the military. He became a combat medic and

| CULTURA | psychiatric technician. He travelled the US, went to Korea and Japan.

He saw oriental art, southwestern art, Indian art and started painting again. He says “Then I got stuck on it. And I don’t care what I did, or where I was, I did art. It’s worse than a drug when you can sit there and get everything that’s inside of you and put it out on canvas.”

On the trade of being an artist It’s not an easy life being an artist. You’re misunderstood most of the time, and a lot of people laugh at it. Other people say “Oh, that’s a great hobby you got!” That’s the worst thing they can tell you.

—Michael Irrizary Pagan There are a few essential elements which constitute enjoyable art for M.I. Pagan: “It’s got to be unusual, it’s gotta have movement, it’s gotta have color, and most important, it’s gotta have a message. If you don’t put symbols in your paintings with a message, then it’s just a pretty picture to me.” In this sense, art is meant to interact with viewers, not remain behind doors. He believes, “If you wanna get a message across and show something, once it’s out of your touch it doesn’t belong to you no more, it belongs to everybody else.”

In this sense, Pagan has measured the effectivity his art has in carrying the message across when viewers provide takes and appreciation of his work. He has nurtured from the audience. For him, exposure to the public eye of the artwork is necessary in order to understand if the message is clear or not. It is also a source for new understandings of the piece which can inspire new treatments of the subject. He reflected, “If you keep it locked up and put away, well, then you’re just doing it for yourself.”

His late wife Victoria, his muse, was his most important art critic.

She wrote poetry, sung and confectioned clothes out of cloth scraps.

She had an eye for composition and would bluntly tell him what worked and what didn’t work, what would strike and bring people in.

Michael confesses, “I depended on her. To have somebody sit there and tell you truthfully and honestly something about your work, without glossing it over or trying to make you feel good or pamper you. That’s somebody to have.”

Exposing his work was part of his school learning since the teaching he received was about creativity, the creative process and the importance it carried. Exposing his work is fundamental for his creative process as well as working on a series at a time. As he says, “You start on one, and then you continue. By continuing and doing it over and over, repeating and changing, creating and destroying, you get to see exactly where you want it to be, and you have to be able to be strong enough and smart enough to say ‘Even though it’s not complete, I can walk away now.’”

He has series of clowns, buildings, churches and hospital insults.

And it is within this quest that he has found universal symbols, “When you find that image and it speaks in your work, and it captivates, it captures, and it’s so strong that whenever they see it, they understand it, that’s a masterpiece, because now it becomes universal.”

Furthermore, Michael has found a channel for catharsis in his art.

He has put on canvas all his childhood turmoils and trauma to show what he saw and experienced. He says, “It comes out of you, and you see it, and now you feel comfortable with it.” He has represented family members who’ve wronged him and gallerists who’ve rejected his work, “And they sold! But it was an insult.”

For Michael, symbolism is an inextricable root of art, as he said “Before man spoke, they related in symbols. Before we had the words, we had primitive man making symbols and then made them into words.”

So Michael passed judgment, “All artwork is symbolic.” In this sense, words need a symbol prior to existing, and this can only be attained

| CULTURE | by what Michael calls the painted word, which is in itself an approximation to reality. Likewise, by doing this, he approaches a revelation of how words can be painted, especially expressions. For example, how do you paint money makes the pot boil, or the labourer is worthy of his hire, or hunger never saw bad bread ?

In this same vein, Michael has set forth to paint what is not visible to the plain eye but nevertheless present, like the psychological conundrums of individuals and society, the manifest evils of corruption or the hidden agendas of people in power. In other words, he’s set out to paint what everybody sees but remains silent and indifferent. “Throughout history, there’s always been politics and corruption, there’s always been good and evil, life and death, there’s always been black and white, and all that stuff, no matter how we put it down, it was done before us. So there’s nothing new, the only thing new is how you express it now, or how you show it.”

This is why Pagan considers that what matters most in being an artist is finding a voice, because everyone is experiencing the same reality, but the way each individual perceives it changes, and the form the artist expresses it is the source of individuality and uniqueness, “Because there is nothing new under the sun, only how you see it and how you express it. The technique and stuff they’re using is probably different, but they were doing cave art, doing sculptures, doing pyramids. But how do you make that into a message that people recognize as something. It’s like making an outstanding asopao, it depends on what you put in it. It’s how you twist it around but it’s still soup. You add a little bit of this, a little bit of that, take from over there, put it together. In my paintings, for each work, maybe that technique works, so I use it and then throw in a little something of mine, the symbolism or the message I’m trying to get across. I use satire, take from cubism or surrealism, put it together. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.”

In this sense, Pagan highlights the importance of being of your time. Since these universal subjects pervade history, the only tool the artist has at hand is recognizing how these subjects are manifest during his lifetime. This requires an understanding of the tradition of art, a historical picture of techniques and movements, and a vision of where you, as an artist, stand within the realm of art and life. That’s why he doesn’t ascribe to any movement or recognize within what the critics have coined as Hispanic or Latino art, which falls under the stereotype of roosters, sugar cane plantations, fuming coffee and jíbaros contemplating the horizon. “As a Puerto Rican artist, or a Latino Artist, I’m putting a message of what I grew up with, and what I saw and what I know. And I want to show that.”

Appreciation Interlude At first, M.I. Pagan’s art drove me into a state of bewilderment. The colors, the forms, the figures, the objects, the characters, the actions all appeared as an interpolation of seemingly unconnected elements, but under the surface of the first impression I recognized a message encrypted in their proxemics.

A teddy bear in front of a church was a lure, a bait for pedophilia.

Clowns amassed in a tiny axle-less car heading towards another clown giving a speech to a long-nosed red and blue audience was the presidential rat race. The labyrinthic cityscapes of doors and stairways leading nowhere was his understanding of unregulated population and metropolitan growth. The Tres Brujos are crippled as the dogmatic beliefs politicians, soldiers and priests impose onto society to maintain their rule of chaos and debauchery. An upside-down flag for the country in crisis, a deflated pumpkin head so as to portray hollowness of thought. A long nose and a big mouth for the boisterous liars.

The dream-like paintings crept through the surrealist techniques,

the words started to erupt from the image, the dance of concepts swirled to the rhythm of madness and shots of understandings came in Aha! forms. The symbols carried their message, the elements no longer appeared gratuitous or arbitrary. The strokes acquired the tint of thoughtfulness. The images displayed a harsh truth which became easier to digest thanks to the form. The art had spoken.

Coda: The scene for art in Orlando Michael has exposed his work in California, Georgia, Alabama, New York, Texas, Maryland, New Mexico, Hawaii and Florida. In Central Florida, he has exhibited his work at the Osceola Center for the Arts, at Kissimmee’s and St. Cloud’s City Halls, at frame shops, in libraries and at New Concept Barbershop and Art Gallery. But he considers places like City Hall aren’t a proper venue for exhibiting artwork, “People don’t go to City Hall to look at art, people go in there to pay their bills, or go to meetings.”

In this sense, Pagan considers the venues for artists to show their work are extremely limited and at times useless. Pagan says, “Here we have a problem with galleries because they dictate what they’re gonna show, not who they’re gonna show. You gotta fit into a theme. If you don’t, you don’t get shown. A lot of times you gotta pay to get into a show but the artworks together don’t make any sense. They’re also renting art spaces. You can rent a space for one or two weeks and pay a fortune, paying their rent, paying them to show you, but they’re not promoting you because you have to promote yourself. It doesn’t do anything for you, so that’s not a real gallery.”

He highlighted late Nan Boynton’s labor at the CityArts Factory and how they admitted pieces based on quality which was assessed through a small fee. He also lauded Angel Rivera’s work in establishing New Concept Barbershop and Art Gallery. Yet he recognized we’re in “Mickey Mouse land,” and tourists don’t want to take back home art pieces that cost them a couple hundred or even a couple thousand dollars, “They can get little postcards for 25 cents. That’s all they want.

They’re gonna spend a thousand getting into the shows.”

Michael considers one of the greatest issues lies in promotion as well as art misplacement. “You can have a show in a bar or a restaurant. But you don’t go to a bar to look at art, you go to get drunk and pick up somebody. In a restaurant all the smoke from the cooking gets onto your painting. People go there to eat.”

As a possible solution, Michael proposes to create a space where the art forms intermingle, where master artists can pass down their knowledge to apprentice artists and introduce them to both the appreciation of the creative process as well as the final result. This way, audiences consolidate and can expand. “If you have this space where you have music, poetry, writing, painting, all that stuff in one area, people will go to it. Also, be at Avant Garde and unique and have people who are into that come here.”

But what Michael considers can change the game would be to own a gallery, “If it’s your gallery, you can do whatever the hell you want, you can manage it and you can get whoever you want. And it’ll work if you know how to publicize it. It’s not that hard, you just have to find a spot where you can get that kind of traffic. That’s what’s gonna cost you.”

For now, Michael will continue painting for that’s what he knows best, “The funny thing is that, as soon as I’m working on one, I put it aside and I’m working on another. I do too much of it and I gotta get rid of it. Hahaha.”

Colombiana INGREDIENTES 1 lb. de panela partida en trozos 2 astillas de canela 1/8 cdta. de clavo molido 5 tazas de leche, separadas 1¼ tazas de harina de maíz 1/8 cdta. de sal 1 taza de coco rallado Canela molida

Breve Historia de la Natilla

PREPARACIÓN 1. En una olla pequeña calentada a fuego medio, vierta la panela troceada, las astillas de canela y el clavo molido junto a 1 taza de agua.

2. Lleve a ebullición mientras revuelve hasta disolver la panela.

Retire y deseche las astillas de canela. Deje a un lado.

3. En un tazón pequeño, mezcle 1 taza de leche con la harina de maíz y revuelva hasta que obtenga una consistencia suave.

Deje a un lado.

4. En una olla mediana, caliente a fuego medio 4 tazas de leche mezclada con la sal. Cuide de no hervir la leche. Una vez caliente, añada la preparación de panela, clavos y canela, y revuelva para mezclar.

5. Suba el fuego a medi-alto y añada la mezcla de maíz. Revuelva constantemente con una cuchara de madera, procurando raspar el fondo y los lados de la olla para evitar que

se pegue la mezcla.

6. Revuelva hasta que la mezcla empiece a hervir y adquiera una consistencia espesa.

(NOTA: La clave del punto es cuando se raspa el fondo de la olla y queda el trazo de la cuchara.)

7. Vierta la natilla en una refractaria, raspando la olla con la cuchara de madera. Una vez vertida en su totalidad, aplane la natilla con la cuchara.

8. Esparza el coco rallado sobre la superficie de la natilla y cubra la refractaria con papel plástico.

9. Refrigere hasta que esté fría y firme, (mínimo recomendado: 4 horas.)

10. Desmolde la natilla sobre un plato o una bandeja de madera.

11. Espolvoree la natilla con la canela molida como toque final.

12. Sírvala y disfrútela con buñuelo y villancicos junto a amigos y familia.

a natilla colombiana es prima hermana del pudín español y el flan francés, y así mismo ostenta el título de nieta de la repostería árabe. Debido a la presencia musulmana en la península Ibérica, especialmente en Andalucía, la repostería árabe e hindú hizo huella en la culinaria española, pues ellos ya manejaban la caña de azúcar y otras especias aromáticas.

Durante la época de la conquista española, las coladas de harina de trigo llegaron a Colombia en las manos de las monjas españolas y francesas que las preparaban con gelatina. Pero no tardó el maíz nativo en reemplazar al trigo dada la disponibilidad.

Ya con la experimentación en curso, las monjas decidieron reemplazar el azúcar por panela y le añadieron canela en polvo, el oro rojo del Amazonas que enloqueció a Pizarro.

En Colombia la natilla está disponible a lo largo del año, pero durante la navidad adquiere la etiqueta de postre imperdible en las novenas. ¿Qué espera? Prepare su natilla, acompáñela con buñuelos y cante con su familia los villancicos para atraer el espíritu de la navidad.

Wednesday November 20 (6PM – 10PM) Orlando Vegan Market Round 4 (FREE) The fabulous Orlando Vegan Market will be taking place for the fourth time at The Veranda in Thornton Park. Even if you are not a vegan, you are bound to find something that you find delicious.

Thursday November 28 (8PM - 2AM) Tampa Salsa & Bachata Festival 2019 ($$+) Tampa will be hosting their annual Salsa and Bachata Festival at the Hilton in Downtown Tampa. Bachateros and salseros alike are encouraged to dance the night away at this 4-day event.

Thursday November 21 (6PM – 10PM) Asian Lantern Festival: Into the Wild ($$) At the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens, there will be a cultural event displaying sculptural LED lanterns and traditional Asian elements.

This event runs from November 20th until January 12th.

Friday November 29 (6:30PM – 8:30PM) Orlando Critical Mass (FREE) Once a month, Orlando Critical Mass hosts the largest group bicycle ride in Orlando. This event takes place the last Friday of every month and meets at Loch Haven Park. Make sure to bring a light for your bike and to ride responsibly!

Friday November 22 (5PM – 10PM) Light Up UCF ($$) From November 22nd until January 5th, UCF hosts Light Up UCF in front of the Addition Financial Arena. There are carnival rides and ice skating for the family to enjoy.

Saturday November 30 (4:30PM – 8:30 PM) Light Up Mount Dora (FREE) The Saturday after thanksgiving, the Chamber of Commerce of Mount Dora hosts an event where they light over 2 million lights. Come with your family and be ready to watch an interesting light show.

Saturday November 23 (7AM – 1PM) Winter Park Farmers Market (FREE) Did you know Winter Park has one of the oldest Farmer’s Market in the country? Join locals every Saturday in Winter Park for a nice outdoor activity. There’s tons of food vendors and artists at the event.

Sunday December 1 (12PM – 4PM) Downtown Orlando Indoor Farmers Market (FREE) The Indoor Famers Market at Celine Orlando will be back for another Sunday-Funday from 10am2pm. Come pick up some local produce and food whilst in the comfort of some cool AC.

Tuesday December 3 (5PM – 2AM) Burger Night at Bar Louie ($) Don’t feel like cooking tonight? Bar Louie in Winter Park has $5 burgers available every Tuesday!

Thursday December 5 (6:15PM – 8:30PM) 41st Annual Christmas in the Park (FREE) At the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, there will be a special Christmas event on December the 5th. At 6:15PM 9 vintage Tiffany leaded-glass windows will be lighted and there will be live music by the Bach Festival Society Choir.

Friday December 6 (5PM – 10PM) Winter on the Avenue (FREE) On Friday the 6th there will be a special event in Winter Park. The city will be turned into a winter wonderland with tree lighting, carolers, and Santa.

Saturday December 7 (6PM – 9PM) A Merry Winter Garden Light Show (FREE) ‘Tis the season for some cool light shows. On Saturday there will be a light show at the Winter Garden City Hall. Bring out the whole family and enjoy the animated holiday greetings.

Sunday December 8 (12PM – 4PM) Orlando Flea (FREE) Rain or Shine, get your shopping on at Orlando Flea! This indoor event takes place at Celine in Downtown Orlando and features a variety of food, drinks, and local artists.

Wednesday December 11 (6PM – 8PM) Santa Paws at Center Lake Park (FREE) At the Center Lake Park Cultural Center in Oviedo, there will be a Santa available to take professional pictures with your puppers. Food trucks and pet-friendly vendors will also be at the event.

Thursday December 12 (6PM – 9PM) Winter Park Village Live! (FREE) Winter Park has free live music every Thursday night. Bring out the family to Winter Park Village and enjoy some live music at the park. The live music is relocated to The Hangry Bison if there is bad weather.

21+ Tuesday November 19 (9PM – 12AM) Drink N Draw ($) Every Tuesday after Tasty Tuesday, you can show off your artistic abilities and have a chance to win a bar tab at the Nook on Robinson! Entry into the contest is free, and anyone can win.

Thursday November 21 (5:30 PM–7:30 PM) Beer Pairing Dinner ($$$$) At Castle Church Brewing, there will be a Beer Pairing Dinner. Appetizers, a main course, dessert, and beer are all included. Only 35 tickets are available, so book yours soon!

Wednesday November 27 (7:30PM - 9:30PM) Game Night at Rockpit (FREE) RockPit Brewing hosts a game night every Wednesday night. Bring some friends, grab a nice cold beer, and bring your competitive spirit!
