By Glenyz Pereira Speech and Debate at high schools and universities in the United States can still conjure up images of overly studious, even geeky, straight white males in competition. But this stereotype is increasingly outdated, especially as more students from first-generation Latin American immigrant communities participate in training and competitions. Nationally, Latin American students now make up a quarter of all participants in Speech and Debate, also called Forensics.

Beyond mere numbers in terms of representation, these students advocate for messages that are important to them, foregrounding topics that resonate with Latin American contexts. In Florida, students have debated topics ranging from mental health provision for Hispanic communities, cases of abuse of migrant workers, and racial profiling. Students must master techniques of presenting compelling arguments regarding highly sensitive, current concerns in Forensics. It is not uncommon for past students to return as mentors or coaches to help cultivate the next generation of younger debaters. Fernando Morales, a television actor in Miami, is one such participant-turned-coach. “Forensics always gave me the light I wanted to advocate and the spotlight I always wanted,” he says. For many Latinx students like Fernando, Forensics has been a creative outlet and a career springboard —so much more than just a recreational hobby.

Fernando graduated from the University of Texas at Austin where he and his friend Lario Albarrán were the first two Latinos to participate in Interpretation Events for Forensics in 2012. Interpretation Events require participants to select a piece of World Literature or American Literature and rewrite it as a ten-minute performance that advocates a message of importance to them. It can be a daunting task to find a piece of literature suitable for this type of re-interpretation. Fernando’s advice to students when selecting a literary text is to avoid trying to impose a message on the literature, but rather to draw out a message from a text they already find appealing and captivating. This is, in fact, the approach that allowed Fernando and Lario to pioneer the use of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman for an interpretation event, when they rewrote Miller’s famous play as a dialogue between a Mexican immigrant father and son. Their interpretation brought fresh, updated insights to bear on the American Dream in the twenty-first century and the working conditions of Mexicans in the United States.

On the practical side, Forensics helps students acquire and exercise skills in research, writing, and oral argumentation. “I’ve learned that you can be at the top of your field, whether that be science, engineering, or law, but if you cannot communicate that knowledge, if you cannot share that expertise, it doesn’t matter,” says Gina Sanchez, who was a finalist for the National Speech and Debate Association 2018 Student of the Year. Forensics allows students to hone these vital communication skills, which can take them to astronomical heights in national and international arenas.

Forensic Speech is an ancient Greek practice of public speaking and debate in a public forum. Nationwide we have tournaments, events and conferences to learn the art of informing and persuading an audience through speech. Latinxs, the newest asset of the trade. cela and Victoria Suarez-Palomo when they were growing up in Miami and now serve as a Nevada State Senator and Vice President of Renovate America, respectively.

Beyond practical skills, for first-generation Latin American students in the US, in particular, Forensics can be an especially important venue for thinking through issues pertaining to their Latin American heritage, identity, and cultural representation. Alongside the prevailing stereotypes of Forensics being the domain of white male students, there is also an emerging stereotype that Latin American students will present yet another story of immigration or related topics in their speeches. In reality, of course, Latin American subjects for Forensics are far more complex and varied, encompassing the diaspora, latinidad, and history. Abel Rodriguez III, a graduate of the University of Kentucky and UCLA Law School, states that one of the steepest challenges for him within a predominately all white Forensics team was being comfortable with undertaking topics surrounding Latin American identity. Abel notes, “It was so different going from doing speeches where you were told to be careful of doing identity pieces in high school in Florida because you didn't know how they would be received to actually, my senior year [in college], I was doing those topics, told not to care about what judges might think.” Abel says we are slowly making progress in this regard. After competing in Forensics for four years, Abel now practices law in Los Angeles and credits Forensics for setting him on the path to his present career.

For first-generation students in particular, Forensics can provide a valuable venue for educating others, including their own teammates, about the conditions and experiences they face. This is very much true for Ambar Reyes-Pérez, who grew up in Puerto Rico. Ambar, a senior at the University of Central Florida, captains the university’s Speech and Debate Team. She says that Forensics has given her a creative outlet to share stories and messages that are truly important to her. Ambar says, “My advice to fellow Latinx students is not to feel discouraged and to bring advocacy. Treat topics you are passionate about.

If not, you will run out of steam in the middle of the season.” If not for Forensics, she claims, she would not have gained opportunities to travel the country, all expenses paid, and to build the network and legacy she now has entering her second year as captain. She says that one of the biggest accomplishments this activity has given her is being able to share messages that are dear to her about Puerto Rico, such as bilingual education. Equipped with skills in Forensics, she is now looking forward to law school. Forensics gives many Latin American students purpose and proficiency in contexts where such students would traditionally have been anomalies. Participants like Fernando, Lario, Gina, Abel, and Ambar are amongst the pioneering Latin Americans in Forensic Speech, an oratory and persuasive art for all.

and humanitarian intervention.

The Book of Rosy is organized in three different parts, each with a different perspective on Rosy’s experience. The first Part presents a first-person telling of Rosy’s life in Guatemala, beset by gang violence and corruption, which drive her to make the arduous journey to the US. When the opportunity presents itself to escape, she leaves her homeland without a second glance, entrusting two daughters to the care of her extended family and taking two sons with her on the “Migrant Highway.” Their journey culminates in detention and separation at the US border, where Rosy endures 81 days separated from her sons in “The Icebox,” the asylum seekers’ nickname for the austere Eloy Detention Center. Ultimately, through the aid of the Immigrant Families Together (IFT) Foundation, Rosy reunites with her sons in New York City.

As Rosy acknowledges, not everyone is as fortunate to be released on bond from the immigrant detention centers. Although the “zero-tolerance” policy has since been formally ended by executive order, many families remain detained and separated today, often in centers that can be veritable petri dishes for COVID-19 contagion.

In Part II, co-author Julie Schwietert Collazo recounts how she and her network of concerned working mothers founded the IFT from an initial “wild idea” to raise sufficient funds to reunite families sepa-

rated at the border. Their efforts proved wildly successful, raising over $7,500 within their first day of social media campaigning. As their resources grew, the IFT was able to reunite Rosy with her sons, as well as many other families. This part of the book provides unique insights on the other side of the story: the charitable, grassroots teamwork that brought Rosy’s family together again, with legal asylum, in their new home. This part of the book may not be as riveting as the story of Rosy’s migration and detention, but it showcases a key piece of the current puzzle, foregrounding the personalities and voices that advocate for more humane immigration policies. This focus continues in the book’s third Part, which interweaves both Rosy’s and Julie’s perspectives on how her life has changed since release from the immigrant detention facility and awaiting her asylum hearing. At times, the alternating first-person accounts in this section may be confusing, but bringing these co-authors’ storytelling together for the book’s conclusion is an apt reflection of their collaborative efforts to raise awareness of a wider, more complex experience. “In this book, I am both grateful and proud to help tell Rosy’s story,” Julie writes, “but also, to give her the bullhorn. Her story is just that—uniquely hers—but its basic contours represent the stories of thousands of Central Americans seeking refuge in the United States.”

It has been said that journalism is the first rough draft of history. Personal memoirs like The Book of Rosy can serve as the second draft, offering a more sustained, in-depth account of stories behind the headlines. Without books like these, those personal stories can too easily be overlooked or misconstrued. As Rosy explains, “This is the immigrant experience I wish people could see, not because it is my experience, but because it’s the story of so many of us, coming to the United States to escape violence and to build lives in which we will contribute fully to society. We are grateful for any support, but we’re not waiting for a handout. We want to be part of your American dream. We want to help you realize it. We want to share in it with you.”

Mostly removed from the tumultuous happenings in La Capital, Santo Domingo in the 1960s, Ana’s mother has big plans for her to marry Juan Ruiz, a much older man who can take her to New York City. Once Ana is in the United States, she is supposed to help support her family back on the island and eventually bring them to the U.S. as well. In New York, Ana is subjected to physical abuse at the hands of her husband, who controls her new life in the U.S., as she learns how to play the role of a wife.

Although only a teenager and an expectant mother, during her husband’s absence to defend his business interests in the Dominican Republic, Ana learns how to survive and use her assets to entrepreneurial advantage. The main and most poignant point of Dominicana is that even though it is a story of a young Dominican immigrant in the 1960s, Ana’s story is timeless and can ring true for countless women. The novelist in this case undertook wide-ranging research but rather than produce a work of scholarly nature, she offers an imaginative account that fuses many real-life stories into provocative representative fiction.

“Juan is my monster and my angel,” Ana reflects regarding her husband. “In this messed-up world, he tries his best. And I owe it to him to try my best.” This quote is a salient summary of the dual extremes that can characterize relationships in an immigrant’s experience. In the beginning, upon arrival in New York City, Juan has all the power. Ana is powerless.

He can do anything he wants to her and take anything he wants from her. At times he can be extremely cruel, and at times he can be equally sweet and tender. Their relationship is always on his terms. This is how he can simultaneously be her monster and her angel. The author deftly creates a com-

pelling portrait of a young, battered women controlled by a temperamental man. Ana has to learn to navigate her husband’s moods.

The most remarkable aspect of Dominicana is its believability. This is an important aspect of the book because although it is a work of fiction, it almost reads like a personal memoir. The novel’s details such as the murder of Malcolm X on Ana’s block, the music of the period, 1960s fashion, or the World’s Fair, give this fiction a realistic texture. The wealth of seemingly mundane details renders a highly evocative setting. Readers can vividly imagine what Ana’s experience must have been. Again, the author’s method of gathering a wealth of information from real-life immigrant women equips her to compose a novel that reads like representative personal history. In this, the utility of writing fiction becomes most apparent. Cruz is able to create a believable world and a remarkable story, without being confined to a particular storyline or to the strictures of accuracy as in a work of nonfiction.

Besides its superb believability, Dominicana’s other defining characteristic is its urgency. As Cruz acknowledges the stories on which she draws are “often painful” in the telling. Dominicana tells a story that needs to be told, even today. Ana’s story is that of so many other immigrant women and can resonate with many kinds of people.

Whether a reader has experienced a similar story herself or simply wants to try to understand a grim side of the immigrant woman’s experience, Dominicana’s particular kind of representative fiction provides just that: a clear, credible window into that world. It is not merely the story of one woman, but a far broader account of women’s experiences of immigration.

Rosy and her two sons endure separation at the US border under the notorious “zero-tolerance” policy, in force from April to June 2018. Rosy’s story is crucial for understanding the personal effects of this policy, alongside the broader contexts and backstories behind what the media dubbed the “migrant caravan” massing at the southern border. This caravan of displaced populations comprises families trying to escape the harsh realities of their home countries for greater safety and freedom.
