Guild Fundraisers VENDOR Our mission is to make a difference by identifying the community’s health and wellness needs while bridging the gap between those needs and the cost of the solutions.

The SOMC Development Foundation encompasses fundraising efforts for Hospice, Cancer, Employee Relief, Heart & Vascular, Pediatrics, Community Health and Wellness, the Endowment Fund and the areas of greatest need. These funds generate much needed support and enable SOMC to continually deliver extraordinary care for future generations to come. We consider it our responsibility to serve our community and we take pride in doing so.

On November 16, we hosted our annual Winter Wonderland Ball at the SOMC Friends Center. Bringing the outside indoors, guests mingled and danced at the frostedthemed event. While the theme may have been icy, warm hearts were on display.

Megan McKenzie, Manager of Community Relations & Development said, “Every year our guests come ready to give back through this fundraiser. It is amazing to see everyone come out for not only an evening of fun, but giving back to their community as well.”

The black-tie event featured an elegant, winter fare dinner catered by The Scioto Ribber, a lavish holiday tree auction and everybody’s favorite, the gift wall.

» Rebecca Milnes

Rebecca Milnes, a sixth generation native of Scioto County, spent her first thirty years of life in the Portsmouth area and remembers it as an idyllic life full of art and sports, plus access to one of the best parks in the state of Ohio.

She was even the first exchange student from Portsmouth High School to study abroad in Denmark in 1969. Although she now lives across the country in California, she still holds this area close to her heart.

“My parents and grandparents were active community members and worked diligently to bring jobs and services to Portsmouth.

They were active in both civic and church groups and felt it was very important to give back to the community,” Milnes said. “Despite the fact that I no longer live there, I know how much I have benefited from Portsmouth and am only too happy to try to show my gratitude by supporting the many efforts to revitalize a great city.”

In 2015, Rebecca’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and was admitted to SOMC Hospice. “I cannot say enough wonderful things about the care that she received there. The facility is lovely and geared toward making everyone comfortable- patient and family. We felt so grateful that mom received such compassionate care and attention.

I have seen other facilities and am convinced that it is one of the top places in the state,” she said.

As an expression of her appreciation, Rebecca donated to the SOMC Hospice Expansion Project so that first class care could be extended to more people. After becoming a first time donor, Rebecca began to receive copies of the SOMC Development Foundation Newsletter.

When she received the Fall 2019 issue, Rebecca noticed the coat drive and selflessly gave $30,000 to the cause.

“My personal belief is that children are the innocent victims- whether it is to poverty, drug abuse, family violence or instability,” she said.

“They have no hand in whether there is enough food to eat, heat in the house or warm clothes. Providing coats to children seemed like such a no brainer.”

Rebecca encourages members of the community to join together and demonstrate that Portsmouth has great potential; and to give back to the community which put them on their path in life.

Coat Drive Success After much generosity and an abundance amount of compassion from our community, local schools and shelters received new winter coats of all different sizes, plus hats, gloves and socks for those in need this winter. In addition to the amazing community members who donated coats, we would like to thank a few key donors that made this project a success.

A special thanks to Dr. Jay Hamze, Vicki Noel, SOMC Dietary Services and Rebecca Milnes. With their help and the support of the community, more than 1,000 coats were delivered to children in need.
