Southern Ohio Medical Center Development Foundation

As October draws to a close, we reflect on Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the profound impact of the Breast Cancer Compassion Fund. This essential fund provides critical support and resources to those battling breast cancer, offering both financial assistance and compassionate care during their journey.

This fund has helped purchase wigs, cover medication costs, gas card to get to and from appointments, access to a dietician, genetic testing to assess breast cancer risks, a Cooling Cap machine to help decrease hair shedding during chemotherapy treatments, and so much more.

We deeply appreciate every donor who has contributed to this fund. Your generosity has directly impacted thousands of lives.

Gifts of Stock:

There are many types of planned giving opportunities for donors to consider, and one of the simplest is donating stocks. You can donate shares of stock, bonds, or mutual funds directly to the SOMC Development Foundation. This method often comes with significant tax benefits. The SOMC Development Foun-

>> Meet Our Board Member: Dart Miller

Why did you join the SOMC Development Foundation Board?

In 1996, William McKinley, who was a board member, asked me to join the board. He said they could use someone to represent the Wheelersburg area and mentioned that he knew I was well-connected in the community. My daughter Karen Leesburg and I had just opened a store called *Special Occasions*, which specialized in clothing for weddings and proms. It was a busy time, as prom season was in full swing, so I told him I needed to think about it. The more I thought about it, the more I felt compelled to help SOMC, my favorite hospital. I eventually responded, “I want to join… I love that hospital and want to help it.”

What is your favorite part of serving on the board?

Attending all the meetings and approving funding for various projects that help our hospital improve patient care has been incredibly rewarding. These projects make a real difference, helping patients and their families feel more comfortable during their stay at SOMC. At the ripe old age of 87, I am so proud to serve on this board! Which foundation event do you look forward to this year?

The Winter Gala is my favorite! It’s always so much fun—everyone dresses up, there’s great food, and dancing! Best of all, the proceeds from the event always support a worthy cause at SOMC.

>> Guild Garden Tour

Our dedicated SOMC Guilds came together to see the remarkable results of their generosity firsthand at the SOMC Hospice Center gardens. Their collective efforts have breathed new life into this special space, transforming it into a serene and welcoming haven for hospice patients and their families. The revitalized gardens now provide a peaceful retreat where loved ones can find comfort and solace during challenging times. This transformation is a testament to the Guilds’ commitment and compassion, creating a lasting legacy of care and support for those in need.

If you could only pick one fund to donate to, which one would you chose and why?

The Pediatric Fund is close to my heart because I love helping children, especially since I had seven children of my own. I understand that sometimes parents need support with special challenges that arise in their children’s lives.

In one sentence, how would you describe the mission of the SOMC Development Foundation?

I don’t know what we would do without the SOMC Development Foundation! I believe we play a crucial role in meeting the needs at SOMC. We provide assistance to patients and their families for things that insurance doesn’t cover, making a meaningful impact in their lives.

Music Makes the Best Medicine

Proceeds benefited the Cancer Compassion Fund | Sponsored by the SOMC Guilds

Hosted by Dr. Vincent Scarpinato, this new Breast Cancer Awareness Month event transformed the historic Marting’s building into an elegant New Yorkstyle cabaret, offering an intimate evening of music, friendship, and philanthropy. Guests were treated to captivating performances by talented local artists,

creating a warm and sophisticated ambiance that brought the room to life. Most importantly, the event raised vital funds for the SOMC Compassion Fund, supporting individuals in the community affected by cancer. It was an unforgettable night of music and giving back, enjoyed by all.
