El Peacock Bass del sur de la Florida Por el Dr. Martín Aróstegui Director de Viajes y Exploraciones de Sol y Mar Magazine Hace muchos años, la mayor parte del sur de la Florida era el pantano Everglades. Con el fin de desarrollar la tierra y la construcción de viviendas, un intrincado sistema de canales fue excavado para proporcionar un drenaje adecuado del agua y evitar que nuestras casas se vean inundadas durante la estación lluviosa. El sistema de canales del sur de Florida se convirtió en el hábitat perfecto para muchos peces exóticos que fueron liberados en esas aguas.

Aproximadamente 25 años atrás, la tilapia fue desplazando a la mayoría de las especies nativas en el sistema de canales del sur de la Florida. Las tilapias llegaron allí provenientes de los estanques de acuicultura de la zona que se inundaron por los huracanes que azotaron el sur de Florida.

Después de muchos estudios, la Comisión de Peces y Conservación de Vida Silvestre bajo la dirección del biólogo Paul L. Shafland introdujo al peacock (pavón) para aumentar la depredación de la tilapia y otros peces exóticos. También se esperaba que el pavón proporcionara nuevas posibilidades de pesca en el sur de la Florida. El pavón está ahora bien establecido y se puede pescar en los muchos canales existentes del sur de Dade hasta el condado de Palm Beach. Esta especie se puede pescar desde las orillas de los canales o de las embarcaciones pequeñas que pueden ser lanzadas desde rampas para botes disponibles para el público.

Los pavones (peacocks) son tan populares que muchos pescadores viajan al Sur de la Florida para pescarlos. Esto se ha traducido en el desarrollo de una pesquería de millones de dólares. La mejor manera de aprender a pescar pavones es contratar a un guía. Los tiburones Mako son depredadores que habitan en las profundas aguas azules y pueden crecer hasta 1000 libras y merodean por los ocĂŠanos en busca de presas grandes.

Capturar a uno de estos hermosos depredadores con una vara y anzuelo de mosca era prácticamente imposible hasta que el famoso pescador de mosca y miembro del Salón de la Fama Billy Pate capturó el primero en Nueva Zelandia en 1984. Con el fin de atrapar a los primeros, Billy Pate viajó lejos de su casa en los Cayos de la Florida para encontrar a estos escualos en un área de aguas poco profundas. Su primera captura fue un récord mundial de 65 libras! Más recientemente, el capitán Conway Bowman descubrió un área de tiburones mako en San Diego, California.

Con los años el capitán Bowman ha guiado a sus clientes a numerosas capturas de esta especie migratoria. Los makos tienen un sistema olfativo muy sensible que puede detectar cantidades muy pequeñas de residuos de pescado disueltos en el agua. Ellos usan esta ventaja fisiológica para encontrar sus presas. El capitán Bowman utiliza esta misma ventaja para encontrar tiburones cerca de su barco, donde sus pescadores pueden lanzar un anzuelo de mosca que el tiburón muerde enseguida. Para lograr esto lanza al agua residuos de peces, permitiendo que las corrientes del océano les lleve el olor de pescado lejos de la embarcación. Una vez que los

tiburones detectan el olor persiguen a la embarcación. En los últimos años he tenido la oportunidad de pescar makos en San Diego con el Dr. Steve Ward y su esposa Randie. Son excelentes pescadores con anzuelos de moscas. El primer día anzuelamos a doce tiburones y pudimos liberar ocho makos y dos tiburones azules. Esta pesquería es muy emocionante y el capitán Bowman insiste en liberar siempre a todos los tiburones vivos! Esto es muy importante para preservar la especie. El Bimini de hoy es más ecológico y familiar, ampliando el alcance de sus actividades con un nuevo sentido de la diversión y la aventura, tal vez simbolizada por el resurgimiento del club histórico de Bimini Big Game en Alice Town, que en 2010 reabrió con el nombre de Guy Harvey Outpost Resort and Marina. “La industria de botes en Miami es una industria millonaria”, afirma Tomás Regalado, alcalde de la Ciudad de Miami. Entrevista exclusiva realizada por Pedro Díaz Editor de Sol y Mar Magazine Fotos exclusivas Nick Faroy www.FaroyAerialProjects.com “Las propiedades frente al mar son quizás la fuente de ingresos más importante que tiene la ciudad”, comienza diciendo el Alcalde Tomás Regalado en entrevista exclusiva para Sol y Mar Magazine. “En junio próximo termina el contrato de 30 años que la ciudad de Miami tiene con los restaurantes que están cerca del ayuntamiento de Miami en el área de Coconut Grove junto al mar. Esos terrenos pertenecen a la ciudad. En este momento estamos preparando la solicitud de licitación para las personas interesadas en este tipo de negocio. No solamente buscamos mayores ingresos para la ciudad por el uso de esas tierras, sino que estamos demandando, en esta licitación, que los inversionistas interesados en esos contratos inviertan en

mejorar la infraestructura. Por ejemplo, estamos demandando que construyan en esa área un malecón para que el pueblo pueda caminar y disfrutar del paisaje junto al mar aunque no vayan a consumir en los negocios. Otra de nuestras demandas para los inversionistas es que realicen una reestructuración y mejoramiento capital de alrededor de 3 millones de dólares adicionales a la inversión para mejorar las marinas, de manera que sean más accesibles y funcionales para los residentes y más acordes con los tiempos actuales. La industria marina no ha sido muy afectada con esta crisis económica. Las marinas de la ciudad están a plena capacidad. Sabemos que hay personas interesadas en invertir millones de dólares en estas propiedades que tendrían bajo su control por contratos de 40 años. Nuestro propósito es garantizarle al pueblo de Miami que sus

propiedades no solamente produzcan dinero para la ciudad, sino que quienes obtengan los contratos de usufructo mejoren su entorno, especialmente en la zona costera de Coconut Grove. La otra licitación será en el área cercana al Rusty Pelican. Este restaurante ha invertido cerca de 8 millones de dólares para mejorar su infraestructura. Ahora nos han autorizado la creación de una nueva marina al este del Rusty Pelican que tendrá 200 espigones mojados para fondear yates. Eso será importante para la ciudad, porque va a ampliar la capacidad de espacios para yates. Recientemente, el condado cerró una de sus marinas y eso provocó un aumento en la demanda de espacios. Hay centenares de familias, amantes de la vida en el mar, que viven en sus yates. Quiero adelantarle que a finales de este año el

grupo Glastron va a comenzar a construir en Miami la primera “MegaMarina” de todo el sur de la Florida, que estará albergando yates millonarios de más de cien pies de eslora. Estamos también en proceso de aprobar una base de helicópteros, un helipuerto, en Watson Island que sería el primero en el sur de la Florida. Esto es excelente, porque hay muchas personas que se mueven en helicóptero que quieren ir a la American Airlines Arena y al downtown de Miami. Ese helipuerto tendrá aduana y control de seguridad nacional”. Refiriéndose al área del turismo, el Alcalde Regalado plantea: “Estamos trabajando con el Buró de Visitantes y Convenciones para traer más turistas a Miami. Simultáneamente, estamos

participando muy activamente en la ciudad junto a la Congresista Ileana Ros Lehtinen para impulsar en el Congreso el proyecto de visas waiver que permitiría que los ciudadanos de ciertos países como Brazil y Taiwan, no necesiten visa para venir a los Estados Unidos. Taiwan plantea que si obtiene la exención de visa, se aumentaría en más de cien mil el número de visitantes taiwaneses al país, de los cuales, la mitad vendría al sur de la Florida”. Y continuó diciendo el Alcalde: “Recientemente recibimos a la alcaldesa de Caukchoung, la segunda ciudad más importante de Taiwan, y ella firmó aquí en Miami, el acuerdo de “Puertos Hermanos” con el puerto de Miami. Además de eso, firmó un convenio con el Miami International Boat Show para hacer en el 2014, en Caukchoung, el primer boat show internacional de

Asia. Caukchoung ya está construyendo un centro de convenciones para realizar ese tipo de actividades. Caukchoung ocupa el quinto lugar del mundo en fabricación de botes y yates de lujo. Los taiwaneses de la industria de botes tienen recursos económicos y prometen organizar uno de los shows de barcos más grandes que se haya hecho en todo el mundo. Por si fuera poco, el presidente de Horizon Boat, que es la firma de botes más importante del mundo, va a inaugurar una sucursal en Miami. La industria de los botes es una industria millonaria en Miami. Este impulso con Caukchoung traerá muchísimos negocios a la ciudad de Miami, especialmente a la zona del Río Miami. La Comisión del Río Miami está trabajando activamente con la Ciudad de Miami y el Condado para traer más industrias de reparación y fabricación de botes al Río Miami”.

Roberto Guerra, creador de La Caja China, se presentó en el Show “Martha Stewart Presenta: Secretos de la parrilla de los grandes chefs”, cuyo popular programa se trasmitió en el canal Hallmark y tuvo una duración de 60 minutos, en la granja de Stewart en Nueva York. El espectáculo contó con la participación de Guerra y cinco chefs de renombre, quienes crearon y cocinaron una receta especial de barbacoa con Martha Stewart para una fiesta privada que celebró en su finca. “Ha sido un placer trabajar con Martha Stewart. Ella es una persona muy agradable que tiene todo mi respeto y amistad”, enfatizó Roberto Guerra.

TESOROS SUMERGIDOS Por Clemente Atia (Parte III)

El sonido de los cañones de la Fortaleza del Morro en La Habana, Cuba, estremecían los muros de la ciudad como despedida a la flota, que cargada de tesoros zarpaba rumbo a España. Era el 24 de julio de 1715. En el otro extremo del océano Atlántico el rey Felipe V esperaba ansiosamente el valioso cargamento. Trece años de guerra tenían a España ahogada en deudas, su poderío estaba en peligro, el último suministro de oro, plata y piedras preciosas procedentes del Nuevo Mundo había arribado cuatro años atrás. La flota del tesoro como se le llamó debía haber partido mucho antes de aquel 24 de julio, quizás a comienzos del año o a más tardar al inicio de la primavera, alejada de la temporada de grandes tormentas y huracanes de verano, pero la llegada tardía de mercancías procedentes de Colombia y Panamá e inconvenientes en las reparaciones retrasaron su partida. Doce embarcaciones cargadas con cantidades inimaginables de oro y plata, que excedían hasta el doble y más de lo reflejado en los inventarios y registros, navegaron rumbo norte y poco a poco desaparecieron del horizonte habanero.

Siete días después mientras se desplazaban buscando el Atlántico Norte bordeando las costas de La Florida, los vientos comenzaron a soplar muy intensamente levantando gigantescas olas jamás vistas por aquellos hombres. Era la madrugada del 31 de julio de 1715. Los veleros navegaban en formación de caravana: uno detrás del otro en línea a intervalos de entre una y tres millas, todos con órdenes de mantenerse cerca de la costa. Sólo la fragata Grifón, comandada por un capitán francés desobedeció la orden y se alejó mar afuera buscando aguas más profundas y fue la única que sobrevivió a la catástrofe. Más de 700 perecieron ahogados, entre ellos marineros, pasajeros e incluso el general Urbilla comandante de la flota. Días después los sobrevivientes, al mando del almirante Don Francisco Salmón, organizaron un campamento en la costa y enviaron dos embarcaciones en busca de ayuda: una rumbo a la cercana ciudad de San Agustín, en La Florida y la otra rumbo a la Habana. A pesar de que 8 de las 11 embarcaciones naufragaron relativamente cerca de la orilla, tomó mucho tiempo organizar la recuperación del valioso cargamento, por falta de recursos de la época. Como la costa es muy arenosa los objetos pesados y pequeños como monedas y lingotes de oro y plata se entierran con facilidad, y también las aguas en esa zona no son en realidad muy cristalinas. Según algunos documentos el total del cargamento recuperado no llega ni a la mitad de lo que estaba plasmado en los registros oficiales de la flota, y mucho menos si se añade el conocido factor de que las

cantidades de oro, plata y otras prendas y piedras preciosas transportadas de contrabando para evadir impuestos eran enormes. Cifras conservadoras, pero confiables hablan de hasta 28 millones de pesos en monedas de oro y plata, miles de perlas marinas y esmeraldas colombianas, y un sin número de prendas y joyas, algunas de ellas confeccionadas especialmente para la alta jerarquía de la corona española. Una historia larga y apasionante que continuaré en el próximo reportaje, en el cual diré algunos de los lugares donde siguen apareciendo monedas y parte de este tesoro, y también les revelaré qué época del año es más propicia para hallarlas y cómo.

Enmarcado por la sombra de las mansiones hay un pesquero de línea ligera muy productivo situado en la zona del canal intracostero cerca del Jonathan Dickson State Park, conocido como Hobe Sound. En el invierno esta zona está repleta de peces migratorios que se pueden encontrar desde Diciembre hasta Marzo. Recientemente Martín Aróstegui y su esposa Roberta visitaron esta zona en busca del pez Ladyfish o Chiro.

Aunque son pequeños, estos peces halan muy duro y saltan muchísimo. Los Chiros no se comen, porque tienen muchas espinas, pero son populares para los aficionados a la pesca deportiva. Martín y Roberta pescaron con el Capitán Steve Anderson y, aunque hubo temperaturas muy bajas, pudieron capturar y liberar un grupo de Chiros grandes, que se pueden pescar con anzuelo de mosca, señuelo pequeño y también con carnada. The Peacock Bass of South Florida Por el Dr. MartĂn ArĂłstegui Travel and Exploration Director de Sol y Mar Magazine Many years ago, most of South Florida was everglades swamp. In order to develop the land and build homes, an intricate system of canals was dug out to provide proper water drainage and prevent our homes from being flooded during the rainy season. The canal system of South Florida became the perfect habitat for many exotic fish that were inadvertently released over the years.

Approximately 25 years ago, tilapia took so well to South Florida waters that they were crowding out most of the native species in the canal system. The tilapias were probably released from aquaculture ponds by hurricanes that hit South Florida.

After many studies, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission under the direction of biologist Paul L. Shafland introduced the peacock bass to increase predation on the tilapia and other exotic fish. The peacocks came from Central and South America. It was also hoped that the peacock bass would provide new fishing opportunities in South Florida. The peacock bass are now well established and can be caught in many canals from South Dade County to Palm Beach County. You can fish for them from the canal banks or from small boats that can be launched

from many boat ramps available to the public. The peacocks are so popular that many anglers travel to South Florida to fish for them. This has resulted in the development of a multimillion-dollar fishery. The best way to learn how to fish for peacock bass is to hire a guide. I highly recommend Captain Alan Zaremba. Makos on Fly By Pat Ford

Mako sharks are deep blue water predators that can grow up to 1000 pounds and prowl the oceans for big prey.

Catching one of these beautiful predators on a fly rod was practically impossible until the famous fly fisherman and Hall of Fame member Billy Pate caught the first one in New Zealand in 1984. In order to catch the first mako on fly, Billy Pate traveled far from his home in the Florida Keys to find an area that had smaller makos in shallow waters. His first catch was a 65 pounds world record! More recently Captain Conway Bowman discovered a fishery for mako sharks in San Diego California.

Over the years Captain Bowman has guided his costumers to numerous catches of mako sharks on fly. Mako sharks have a very sensitive olfactory system that can detect very small amounts of fish scent dissolved in water. They use this physiologic advantage to find prey. Captain Bowman uses this same advantage to draw sharks close to his boat, where his anglers can cast a fly and trick the shark into biting it. He does this by placing fish carcasses in the water, allowing the ocean currents to carry the fish scent far from the boat. Once the sharks detect the scent they will follow it up to the boat. In recent years I had the opportunity to fish for makos in San Diego with Dr. Steve Ward and his wife Randie.

They are excellent fly anglers that fish regularly for mako sharks. On the first day we raised twelve sharks and landed eight plus two blue sharks. This fishery is very exiting and Captain Bowman insists on releasing all the sharks alive! This is very important for the preservation of the species. “Ocean front properties are the most valuable source of income for the city”, begins remarking Mayor Tomas Regalado in an exclusive interview to “Sol and Mar” Magazine. Next June, the 30 year contracts the City has with the restaurants close to the City Hall and the sea shore in the Coconut Grove area will expire. These lands belong to the city. At this time we are writing the bid models for the investors interested in that sort of business. For the new contracts we are not just looking for a higher income to the city, we are also trying to make sure that bidders be willing to invest in the infrastructure of the area.

For instance, we shall be demanding the construction of a sea-sidewalk where the people may walk and enjoy the view, even though they do not come to the restaurants. Another demand we shall be requesting from investors, is to provide capital improvements of around 3 million dollars to the marinas of the area. We want to turn those marinas more accessible and operational. The marine industry has not been hit by the current economic crisis. The marinas belonging to the city are working at full capacity and we know there are business people willing invest millions of dollars in those properties. New contracts may be signed for 40 years. Our goal is to ensure for the people of Miami that their properties not only will produce money to the city, but that those investors winning the

bids shall improve the infrastructure of the shore line of Coconut Grove. Another important bid shall be held for the area close to the Rusty Pelican restaurant. Up to now, the restaurant operator has invested close to 8 million dollars to improve the infrastructure. We have just been authorized to open a new marina on the East side of the Rusty Pelican. It will have 200 â&#x20AC;&#x153;wetâ&#x20AC;? spots for yachts. Just recently, the county close down one of its marinas and it increased the demand for boat spots. Let me remark that there are hundreds of families that love outdoors living and, in fact live in their yachts. I want to announce that by the end of

the year the Glastron Group shall begin in Miami the construction of the first “Mega-Marina” of South Florida. It will harbor yachts of over 100 foot long. We are also on the process to approve a heliport (a chopper station) in Watson Island. It would be the first heliport in South Florida. We are excited because there are many people using helicopters to come to the American Airlines Arena and the downtown of Miami. The heliport will have its own custom service and national security controls.” To our question about the tourist industry, Mayor Regalado said: “We are working with the Bureau of Conventions and

Visitors in order to attract more tourists to Miami. Simultaneously, we are actively working with Congresswoman, Ileana Ros lehtinen, to push through Congress a waiver visa project that would exempt from visa to enter the U.S. citizens from certain countries like Brazil and Taiwan. Authorities of Taiwan commented that if they are given the visa exemption, over one hundred thousand visitors more would come to the U.S., half of them to South Florida.” And the Mayor went on remarking: “We recently welcomed the Mayor of Caukchoung, the second most important city of Taiwan, and she signed with us the “brotherhood agreement” between the ports of Caukchoung and Miami. Besides, she signed a contract with the Miami International Boat Show to

organize in Caukchoung, in 2014, the first International Boat Show of Asia. Caukchoung is, at this time, building a convention center to host this type of activity. Let me comment that Caukchoung is ranked fifth in the world in the construction of luxury yachts. The Taiwanese boat industry is affluent and has promised to organize one of the largest boat shows of the world. On this issue, I have more good news because the President of Horizon Boat, one of the most important boat builders in the world, is going to open a branch in Miami. This relationship with Caukchoung will attract much business to our city, particularly to area of the Miami River. The Commission of the Miami River is actively working with the City and County authorities to bring to the river area more companies engaged in the repair and building of boats.â&#x20AC;?

The sound of the guns of the Morro Castle in Havana, Cuba, shook the walls of the city as a farewell to the fleet which sailed laden with treasure to Spain. It was July 24, 1715. On the other side of the Atlantic Ocean King Philip V was anxiously awaiting the precious cargo. Thirteen years of war in Spain had drowned in debt, their power was at stake, the last supply of gold, silver and precious stones from the New World had arrived four years ago. The treasure fleet as it was called should have started long before that July 24, perhaps earlier in the year or no later than early spring, away from the season of heavy storms and hurricanes in summer, but the late arrival of goods from Colombia and Panama and disadvantages in repairs delayed her departure. Twelve ships laden with unimaginable amounts of gold and silver, exceeding up to double and more than reflected in the inventories and records, sailed northward and gradually disappeared from the horizon Havana.

Seven days later as they traveled looking for the North Atlantic along the coasts of Florida, the winds began to blow very hard up giant waves ever seen by these men. It was the morning of July 31, 1715. The yachts sailed in convoy formation, one behind the other in line at intervals of one to three miles, all with orders to keep near the coast. Only Griffon frigate, commanded by a French captain disobeyed the order and walked away looking offshore deeper waters and was the only one who survived the catastrophe. More than 700 were drowned, including sailors, passengers and even General Urbilla fleet commander. Days later the survivors, under Admiral Don Francisco Salmon, organized a camp on the coast and sent two boats to seek help: a route to the nearby city of St. Augustine in Florida and the other heading to Havana. Although eight of the eleven vessels were wrecked relatively close to shore, took a long time to organize the recovery of valuable cargo, for lack of resources at the time. As the coast is very sandy and small heavy objects like coins and gold bullion and silver are buried with ease, and also the waters in that area are not really very clear. According to documents recovered the total load does not reach even half of what was reflected in the official records of the fleet, much less if we add the known factor that the quantities of gold, silver and other garments and precious stones

transported smuggled to avoid taxes were enormous. Conservative figures, but reliable speak up to 28 million pesos in gold and silver, pearls thousands of marine and Colombian emeralds, and a number of clothes and jewelry, some made especially for the upper echelon of the Spanish crown. A long and fascinating history that will continue in the next report, which tell some of the places where coins and continue to appear part of this treasure, and they also reveal what time of year is more conducive to find them and how.

His life has been devoted also to professional fishing. In the past twenty years, he has accumulated more than three hundred fishing world records, including 200 with fly-fishing equipment. He is a member of honor of the IFGA (International Game Fish Association Fishing Hall of Fame & Museum) and was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. Dr. Arostegui is also a professional photographer specializing in fishing and nature. He is currently the Director of Travel and Exploration for our magazine, for which he travels to different regions of the world to capture with his lens the most beautiful images that human eyes have ever seen.

Pat Ford is considered the best sport fishing photographer in the United States of America. He graduated as a lawyer from the Columbia University School of Law in 1965. He is currently a senior litigation lawyer in the courts of Florida, as well as a photographer with a passion for fishing. Pat Ford has traveled extensively throughout the world and has won 32 world records in several fishing tournaments held by the IGFA. He is the author of “The Best Fly-Fishing Trips Money Can Buy” which tells about different places he would rather go fishing with a fly hook.

Nick Faroy:

Aviator and Aerial Professional Photographer A pilot for many years, specializing in aerial photography. The perspective of buildings and man-made structures, coupled with an appreciation of nature, inspire him to capture on aerial photos what his eyes behold from above so that others may enjoy them, too. His preference is to take aerial photos of coastal locations because they have a visual impact that is very special to him from a professional point of view. For Nick Faroy, rock formations and marine life are, indeed a impressive and beautiful scenes worthy of admiration.

He worked at the National Aquarium of Cuba drawing fish for scientific publications worldwide. Creator and writer of the series of nature documentaries PROJECT 5, in the 80’s. He has also worked for different magazines and digital magazines on topics related to the sea and the environment. Cameraman, editor and specialist in underwater recordings have won four Emmy Awards. Favorite hobbies: stay under water, the investigation and search for lost treasures.

Steve Kantner

A freelance writer, editor, and fishing personality whose byline has appeared in Fly Rod & Reel, Salt Water Sportsman, Fly Fishing in Salt Waters and numerous other outdoor publications. Steve also worked as a guide, while hosting a drive-time radio show. Plus, he’s appeared in a number of television episodes that showcased his particular specialty—fly fishing from land for inshore species. Steve just finished a book titled Landcaptain; the Secrets of Fishing South Florida on Foot for Wild River Press that’s due out later this year.

Photos Dr. Martín Aróstegui Framed by the shadows of storybook mansions lies a productive, yet little-known light tackle fishery sandwiched between the beach and the mainland (the latter which includes a portion of Jonathan Dickenson State Park) in part of the Intracoastal Waterway known as Hobe Sound. The ambience here is unique like the fishing as if everything was frozen in time. To the east, you’re surrounded

by manicured beauty, while the western shoreline is shrouded by undergrowth. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nothing quite like it in this part of the world. The grass flats in this region serve as a watery redoubt, if only slightly removed from the hustle and bustle associated with waterfront living. Yet the yachts here go slower (manatee zones), and you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see as many (fewer side canals) in this out of the way stretch

of the Intracoastal, between Palm Beach and Fort Pierce Inlets, and just a few miles north of the Jupiter Lighthouse. While fishing the Sound is primarily seasonal, with migratory species arriving in winter, stay-at-home game fish are available to anglers throughout most of the year. Trophy ladyfish (chiro) are a favorite light tackle quarry typically from December through March. Although not what you’d call an “eating fish,” these diminutive relatives of the popular tarpon stage aerial battles that include fast, sustained runs. Anglers pursue them with sinking lures which in the case of flies, means weighted patterns and/or sinking lines while the

hardware set prefers plastic-tailed grubs (DOA Shrimp or Terror-Eyez, Cottee Jig, etc.). For the benefit of any fly-flingers who may be reading this article, an 8-weight rod matched with a fast-sinking salt water taper is just the ticket for fishing channel edges (watch for the markers), while a similar set-up equipped with a weight-forward floater excels for casting poppers at sundown, when the ladyfish come up on top. On a recent outing, Marty Arostegui and his wife, Roberta fished with local guide, Capt. Steve Anderson andsteve1@bellsouth.net. While the weather turned out to

be colder than expected, the pair still managed to release some bragging-size ladies, as seen in the photos. Among the other game fish that frequent these shallows are bluefish, pompano, flounder and sheepshead, along with resident redfish, sea trout and snook, and even the occasional shark. The aforementioned species gobble lures with gusto, with the possible exception of full-grown sharks, which are just too big to bother with trifles. To get to Hobe Sound, if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re trailering a skiff, take the Bridge Road exit (State Road 708) from I-95, and follow it east past U.S.1. Take a left when you get to Gomez, then

follow Gomez north for a mile or two. The launch ramp will be on your right. For better fishing, head south through the bridge. However, you’ll find there’s no substitute for local knowledge. Several knowledgeable guides are familiar with this area, and generally fish it whenever the ocean’s too rough.
