IP69K: FQ rotational speed sensors from RHEINTACHO With its high IP69K protection class, RHEINTACHO is set to introduce a complete new series of plastic sensors for detecting rotational speed and direction from the second quarter of 2016. Thanks to different sensor lengths, cable outlet directions and connector options, this product line offers users a high degree of flexibility, enabling adaptation to entirely individual requirements. And even if none of the available models is suitable, RHEINTACHO will be pleased to draw on its recognised expertise in customised solutions to develop the right solution for you. Why IP69K? RHEINTACHO Sales Manager, Wolfgang Sexauer, “There are two main reasons why we were motivated to develop this new series. Firstly, we see a tendency to specify higher IP classes in many applications for safety reasons, than was the case a few years ago. Secondly, the IP69K protection class enables technical potentials to be realised even more efficiently today. This applies to both available materials and, of course, to intelligent constructions.” The FQ product line is consequently a further development of the current FK product line, which fulfils protection class IP65. In recent years the FK sensors have developed into a genuine success model. Numerous

electromotor applications would be inconceivable without these rotational speed sensors. The basic geometrical data for the RHEINTACHO FK has meanwhile been adopted by significantly larger competitors too. The electronic design of the FQ product line is successively complemented with different variants in order to fulfil different requirements. In detail: Frequency range, detection distance, EMC and temperature stability. According to the current development plan, all versions will be designed as a two-channel sensor, enabling the detection of rotational speed and direction of rotation. Find just the right product – without even having to search! RHEINTACHO offers a wide variety of different products in the speed sensor and stroboscope product selectors. This diverse range offers users the perfect product for almost any application. The important thing, though, is to find it quickly and reliably. So, in drawing up the initial designs for the new website, the integration of a product selector was already an important priority. Exactly what should such a selector be able to do? What questions does a potential customer ask when selecting a product? Which specifications are ‘selection-relevant’ and need clarifying in order to present the user with a really useful choice? Under the management of Isabelle Thumm, the RHEINTACHO project team closely examined, discussed and drafted detailed concepts for these questions, until a good, workable solution had been found. The results can be seen at www.rheintacho.com.

to 11 characteristics (for example: light source, brightness, illumination area etc.).

Two product-specific selectors with the same functional spectrum are currently integrated in the webpage. In the product selector for the speed sensors, users can find a sensor that perfectly suits their needs by using 14 search criteria to select from a current range of 111 sensors. The search criteria include: output signal, geometry, measurement principle, frequency etc. In the case of the stroboscopes, 23 models are offered in the selector, and the selection process can be effectively narrowed down according

RHEINTACHO UK supports historic Papplewick Pumping Station in Nottingham When Ashley Smart, Director of the Papplewick Museum contacted RHEINTACHO in connection with the refurbishment of the Browett & Lindley Compound Steam Engine set, this was to include the tachometers as well. At RHEINTACHO UK, we immediately felt obliged to support this unique example of Victorian ornate architecture and historic example of the industrial revolution of more than a century ago. Mr. Smart originally placed an order with us to refurbish the revometers built in 1946 and 1949 by Foundrometers Instrumentation, as we were formally named. We wanted to support the museum and the refurbishing project and waive all fees in connection with them. The challenge in connection with the refurbishing and a novelty when receiving orders was the fact that the instruments should still look old after doing the work, a challenge for our staff. However, in

the end, it worked and we were able to provide ‘new’ old instruments which fit into their historic surroundings perfectly. We look forward to visiting the Papplewick Pumping Station in the near future and recommend doing so to anyone interested in architecture or technology. After having made the selection, the suitable products are shown in a list of results. Users can then compare up to 4 products from the list with one another and access the relevant data sheet online. There has been an extremely positive response from users. Meanwhile, the RHEINTACHO staff are making intensive use of this online application too. The selectors have already proven their worth above all with regard to telephone enquiries: an interested customer can be directly talked through the different criteria, so that a product that is 100% suitable for the caller can already be identified on the phone. New SPECTRO XEPOS spectrometers redefine ED-XRF with exceptional new levels of elemental analysis performance

SPECTRO Analytical Instruments recently announced its new line of SPECTRO XEPOS spectrometers, representing a quantum leap in energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) technology and providing breakthrough advances in the multielemental analysis of major, minor, and trace element concentrations. New developments in excitation and detection introduced with the new SPECTRO XEPOS ED-XRF spectrometers deliver outstanding sensitivity and detection limits and yield remarkable gains in precision and accuracy. The analysers excel at critical tasks from rapid screening elemental analysis for environmental and waste sampling to demanding applications in research, academia, and geological science. They support precise product quality control at-line for a variety of applications such as chemical and petrochemical production, and the manufacture of cement, cosmetics, food, pharmaceuticals, and more. The new line of SPECTRO XEPOS spectrometers features: Spectacular sensitivity – Innovations in adaptive excitation plus tube and detector technologies that dramatically improve sensitivity – often by 10x or more – to boost precision, realise significantly lower detection levels, and deliver a fast and accurate analysis of a wide range of elements, from sodium to uranium. Enhanced with new highcount detector and tube designs, new sensitivity, and minimised backgrounds, the new analysers’ proprietary adaptive excitation

6

technology enables exceptionally low limits of detection (LODs) for a wide range of elements. Unparalleled precision – Unlike most ED-XRF elemental analysers, the X-ray tubes in SPECTRO XEPOS spectrometers remain powered on between measurements to prevent on/off variations from affecting readings. This ensures long-term stability, realises an exceptionally high degree of precision in elemental analysis – up to 3x better than before, and delivers substantially improved analytical accuracy for concentrations from trace elements to major components. Faster measurements – For operators who require speed more than utmost precision, SPECTRO XEPOS analysers can dramatically cut measurement times, while still maintaining precision levels comparable to traditional ED-XRF spectrometers. The system’s high speed helps to achieve analyses of most samples within a few minutes.

XEPOS ED-XRF spectrometers is available immediately from SPECTRO Analytical Instruments. Four advanced versions are available, enabling users to prioritise their selection according to measurement speed, ultimate precision, or groups of targeted elements in specific matrices. Do You Need a Tree Report from a Qualified Arborist? When developing a site, the focus is often on the buildings, access and parking, the green space outside can easily be overlooked. Trees can be regarded as a problem, something to avoid or remove at the earliest stage. However, with care, they can enhance many developments. The pre-development assessment (Tree Constraints Plan) identifies which trees are most suitable for retention, and how they can enhance the site. This includes screening and those which could provide focal points. Established trees provide maturity to a site which can otherwise seem harsh and new. Tree retention needs to be carefully considered. The design and layout of the development should reflect both the needs of the trees being retained and those of future residents. As a tree officer, I guided many applications with trees. One where I was not involved incorporated a mature oak tree in to the rear garden of a new home. It dominated the setting and did not enhance the setting, making the property a less attractive home. With care, this can be avoided.

Bespoke Joinery from Edinburgh to Aberdeen Building Solutions UK is incredibly proud to present Bill Pitt Manufacturing Joinery Ltd with its richly deserved Commitment to Excellence profile. The expert in customisable and cost-effective joinery, which is based in Kirriemuir, Scotland, has been facilitating the requirements of homes and businesses ever since its establishment in 1998. The company was founded by Bill Pitt, who with 35 years of industry experience was the most ideal candidate to start up such a specialist woodworking organisation. It was Bill’s background as an employee at a joiner’s workshop and a timber sales representative that inspired the entrepreneurial individual to pursue his dream of setting up his own business. The knowledge he had gained during this time – and feedback from customers who noticed his potential – encouraged Bill to take the necessary steps to form Bill Pitt Joinery in response to the gap in the market he had discovered. Following market research it became apparent that there was a growing need for bespoke joinery services, so Bill began to build the business, which started out as just himself and an apprentice. After moving workshops three times the group – which now

Commitment to Excellence

Quality, advanced brickmaking Building Solutions UK is proud to present its highly prestigious and richly deserved Commitment to Excellence profile to The Bulmer Brick and Tile Company. Sitting as it does on deep deposits of London Bed clay, our site has been a source for brick and tile making since at least the fifteenth century. By the nineteenth century it was making and supplying its wares to quality buildings and by way of the River Stour, finding outlets to London. Today our work is closely associated with the restoration and conservation of buildings countrywide; the emphasis being on producing bricks to match the original in all aspects, each brick and special being hand made from purpose made moulds, fired in one of our coal fired, down draught kilns that can create a myriad of colours and textures so necessary when matching early examples of brick. Our significant

collection of purpose made moulds have all been made on site, from drawings, samples or just a photograph and measurements; some copings turning the scales at over fifty kilograms, requiring at least two makers to fill the mould before then turning out the piece.

embellishments not seen before that demonstrated their wealth and power. The revival of this technique in the early nineteenth century with the coming of the ‘Gothic’ age saw its use over wide areas, particularly in civic buildings, banks, schools churches, smart town houses and shops. Amongst our moulds

Our clay seams offer a number of differing clays able to cater for the widening range we provide. We are able to dig clay that once ‘washed’ produces the highest quality red ‘Rubbers’ that match originals made within three miles of our site and supplied to St Pancras Station for its erection between 1868 – 1874. We were proud and delighted not only to make the Rubbers, but cut and rub them, supplying them to site ready to lay when St Pancras Station underwent it’s facelift in order to become the terminal for the Eurostar train service.

today, we still number many originals made and carved in the 1880’s expressly for this market and now coming out of retirement to restore and repair examples suffering the ravages of time. The clays fulfill less well known roles as pozzulans when mixed in lime mortar,

as clay lump and as daub when creating wattle & daub, reinforcing the ties with our past and their importance to our world today. T +44 (0)1787 269232 bbt@bulmerbrickandtile.co.uk www.bulmerbrickandtile.co.uk

Bulmer Brick and Tile Company is a long established family business on the site of a brick making yard dating back centuries. Bulmer bricks are made from the finest London Clays, dug continually from our own clay seams since Tudor times. All our bricks are entirely hand made using traditional methods. We specialise in restoration and conservation of old buildings; working closely with architects and contractors to produce our facing brick to the specification required for your particular building. Although we aim to have a stock of the more common sizes, dimensions and texture are made to order, so that each building receives the correct brick for the work. The kilns are unique coal fired down-draught kilns, loaded, unloaded and fired by hand in a long and labourious process, ensuring each and every brick has had our personal attention. No artificial colours, tints or dyes are used in our process. The beautiful range of colours from orange to dark red and purple comes purely from the firing process, just as it would have been over the centuries. We make a huge variety of brick specials, including terracotta, plinths, squints, decorative chimney bricks, string course bricks and over 500 different types of coping which increases on a weekly basis. All the specials are moulded from wooden moulds, which are made in our own carpentry workshop.

By contrast, we have continued to supply a wide range of sizes and types to restore and conserve Henry VIII’s grand Palace at Hampton Court, a floor at Greenwich and bricks to numerous of his ‘houses’ around the countryside. His courtiers were to take up his love of building, and for a brief moment decorated their splendid buildings with the ‘new’ material, ‘Terracotta.’ For this they required the assistance of foreign craftsmen, believed to be either Italian or French, whose skills gave brickwork

We also have a range of garden edging and decorative plaques depicting floral patterns, some of which are made from original moulds over 100 years old. We have our own brick cutting workshop where we can create cut and rubbed arches, either loose or on steel lintels ready to lift into position, and can cut specials or cut and bond from customer supplied material. Our own clay is prepared by a variety of methods to produce a BBT Fully Washed Rubber for use in fine Georgian Rubbed work and in other grades that can be easily cut and rubbed on site if required.

Hooked on Safety A more secure form of lifting is made possible with Nautilus Rigging, an internationally acclaimed manufacturer of self-locking general lifting hooks that has been successfully raising the standards in global workplace safety since its establishment in 2009. The revolutionary range of patented ‘Nautilus Hooks’ has been stringently designed to ensure efficiency and operator protection, providing complete reassurance for those working within the lifting industry. Managing Director and Designer, Mr Bill Toon said, “Leading organisations have adopted Nautilus Hooks because the proven safety advantages gained by using our hooks align closely with the stated objectives of corporate safety policies which all aim to reduce injuries and improve workplace safety.” The innovative product is fitted with multiple safety features developed to eradicate the hazard of potentially serious pinch and trap hand injuries that commonly occur with the utilisation of traditional ‘latch lock’ hooks. The functional hook comes with a dual-sided sliding lock mechanism for convenient one-handed operation for both right and left handed users and configuration between handle and lock

corrosion-resistant marine grade stainless steel lock spring. They are individually proof tested, manufactured to the BS/EN 1677-1.2008 standard and remain compliant with the DNV type approval under regulation 2.22 for lifting appliances. The company’s newest prototype is based on a ‘positive locking’ design focused on safe, secure, subsea lifting. The NautilusROV Hooks is an industry game-changer, as the first to incorporate advanced technology to provide a Subsea/ROV hook with the ability to keep a load secure until released by the ROV. means arm movement is more flexible, relieving wrist strain. Other important advantages of these awardwinning hooks is the incorporated safety handle for greater control, an unobstructed internal load bearing profile for a swift load or discharge and an outward opening locking arm which avoids sling snagging behind the latch. Strength is guaranteed courtesy of the robust construction of the hooks, which are made from high-grade carbon alloy steel with an embedded

Design Excellence

Embedded Intelligence Here at Solutions UK, we are incredibly pleased to feature BVM Ltd and present its team with our industry coveted Design, Integration & Manufacturing award. The company began as a designer, manufacturer and distributor of industrial and commercial computer products for OEM's and systems integrators when it was established in 1989, but the success that ensued in the following years meant the exploration of associated avenues was a necessary business move. BVM is now an internationally recognised supplier of components, sub-assemblies and brand-exclusive products utilised in everyday life across a wide crosssection of industries. Its extensive array of industrial PC equipment (motherboards, systems, panel PCs, all-in-one PCs and the like) has been distributed across the world to individuals working within airports, railways, government departments, oil terminals and

manufacturing plants as well as those operating in the marine, aerospace, power generation, nuclear, and construction sectors. Rod Clarke, Managing Director of BVM, explained more, “We are a manufacturer and distributor of computer boards and systems with specialist expertise in ports of embedded Windows operating systems. We have a number of standard PC components but we also have a design team that has the ability to engineer a

prototype into a feasible product through the realisation of our customers’ aspirations. “We don’t just provide the necessary systems and metalwork; we also design the actual PCB, as our employees boast an exceptional concept of production. We can undergo all of the essential activities right from the initial concept and consultation through to the implementation of the item. Our philosophy revolves around making life easy for the customer, taking the hassle away with the provision of an all-round service and quality products. Here at BVM, we have a lot of experience and so can provide expert advice on what works and what doesn’t, helping the client to devise a suitable solution that can be brought to market quickly.” The Hampshire-based business supplies standard and custom solutions both direct and via its chain of local distributors. The impressive range includes industrial grade motherboards, embedded systems for display and control applications, automotive PC’s for mobile usage and panel PC and touch screen monitor solutions. Its all-encompassing knowledge of technology extends to a refined understanding of system software and all related areas (Windows XP Embedded – XPE & FES – and Windows Embedded Standard 7 – WES7 – included).

When asked about BVM’s latest movements, Rod was keen to discuss their relocation last year, “We recently moved into new premises after outgrowing the old space,” he said. “12 months ago, we transferred to a larger and more functional facility just outside of Southampton in order to better respond to the increasing industry demand. Our mission going forward is to continue to experience this growth: as our customers progress, so do we, and we strive to establish long term working relationships that enable both parties to develop.” If you would like to find out more about BVM and its system integration, embedded OS porting and custom design and manufacturing services then please get in touch with its group of friendly representatives today.
