The leading direct marketing brand and manufacturer in the process and control industry understands that comfort in an office or workshop is of the utmost importance for a variety of reasons: it improves productivity, avoids health issues and makes for a better working atmosphere. This subsequently relates to the problem whereby individuals breathe in ambient air which contains life supporting oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide (as well as harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde or carbon monoxide). This will inevitably impact workers, taking a negative toll on their wellbeing, as the

rest assured that their properties, assets and employees will remain well protected at all points – and this can only be achieved through the installation of the latest security systems available. One of the Acclaimed Security’s most popular innovations is its ground-breaking GuardSafe system; fitted boxes slotted into the corners of a building, effectively monitoring four designated patrol routes. This award-winning invention acts to instantly alert organisations when a guard is onsite, providing customers with complete confidence that their building is being safely supervised around the clock. “GuardSafe is a unique patrol logging system which works in real time,” detailed Roy Unwin, Managing Director of Acclaimed Security. “This means companies can have results within seconds – if there are any issues, they are flagged up immediately and dealt with accordingly. This is a vast difference to other businesses, whose results are typically provided after a much greater timespan some can take as long as a month! We are proud to say that GuardSafe is a system exclusive to us; no-one else in the world has it.”

Another celebrated success is Check-Call, a service monitoring the performance of a guard on-duty by ringing them hourly and checking they aren’t asleep on the job. This particular technology tracks the officer’s precise movements through routine calls, mobile responses and periodic checks to ensure the personnel are performing as they should be – and if the guards’ reasons to miss these calls are unsatisfactory then the Acclaimed Security supervisors will be on hand to assess the situation and act appropriately. The security specialist has served numerous industrial and commercial outlets and well-regarded blue-chip companies including Leeds Teaching Hospitals, Leeds City Council, Freight Liner, Tarmac, Seabrook Crisps, Vion Foods, Brake Brothers and Liberty Living. Its far-reaching customer base is testament to the industry-leading standard of service offered by the team of highly qualified and knowledgeable experts.

Commitment to Excellence

The Best Labs Choose Leman Instruments Development Manager at Leman Instruments, was eager to discuss the company’s fantastic achievements: “Since our start-up we have experienced a high demand for our services,” he commented. “The past 12 months have been fantastic for the company and we have created a huge evolution for gas generators. We are extremely proud to have been chosen for this feature and feel it is a testament to all our hard work and dedication to producing innovative solutions.” Industrial Process News is incredibly pleased to present Leman Instruments SAS and commend the team behind the brand for achieving its significant Commitment to Excellence profile. The family-ran business has developed incredibly quickly: although being established a few years ago (2012), it has already managed to attain a reputable status as a leading European company specialising in the field of high technology gas generators. Headquartered in Archamps Technopole, France, Leman Instruments concentrates on the production and promotion of sophisticated scientific components used for solid, liquid and gas analysis. Alexander Berteletti, Sales & Business

2

The specialist in modules of scientific equipment focuses on the delivery of standard products, OEMs and in custom designed realisation involving high purity Hydrogen (H2), Nitrogen (N2), Zero Air & combined solutions for FIDs, GCs, purge Air generations, CH4 & CO2 scrubbers, N2 and multi gas for LCMS. These incredibly reliable instruments have been known to reduce operational costs and provide a solid return on investment (within the space of 18 months). Every single device is equipped with high performance communication interfaces (RS485, Ethernet and WLAN options). Offering advantages such as high press stability, the first-class generation of modules can augment the resolution and detection limits of instrumentation. The constant purity guarantees that contamination concerns won’t

arise, and the incorporation of intelligent technologies - Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM), Pressure Swing Absorption (PSA) and Catalysis – ensures that the products can be controlled with ease using a touch panel or iPad. Proving exceptionally easy to install and operate, the innovative components have been specially developed to slot into the majority of laboratory, air quality monitoring and industrial environments. Alexander also wanted to stress that the apparatus is environmentally friendly and completely safe to use: “One of the major benefits of the generators is their maximised safety and conservationism,” he explained. “They are the most compact of their kind, and they have the smallest footprint on the market with the highest possible efficiency and capacity. They are incredibly safe and eliminate the risk of a chemical reaction, particularly when using hydrogen. “Because we have internal quality control, our generators are on hand to make sure the components run properly. This is of great importance, especially since we insist that our generators are exactly what our customers are after, maintaining guaranteed levels of purity. After listening to individual requests we can develop custom solutions together with the client, tailored for specific applications (and at

competitive prices).” Leman Instruments regularly releases new products in a bid to facilitate the needs of all of its customers. One of its most recent additions is the GC STATION 60L & GC STATION 60LC, a combined technology gas generator. Unique to the brand, the single unit integrates an inboard compressor and as a concept unlike any other currently offered in the marketplace, it has proven most successful with clients, who appreciate its simple practicality and function as a fully automated solution combining high purity hydrogen, zero air and nitrogen generators. The line of HYDRO 70ml/min to 15 l/min High Purity Hydrogen Generators for FID and CARRIER GAS is another advancement that has made a significant impression in the industry. These particular products are specifically designed to fit almost any type of application which needs High purity H2 production close to the consumer in laboratory environment. When asked what the future holds for Leman Instruments, Alexander concluded: “Our aim is to keep on track with our company direction, introducing new products and increasing our presence in different markets. Fundamentally, we always advance along with technology

whilst keeping our customers close. We operate with maximum care and we believe that human contact is important – you won’t be put through to any automated hotlines whilst contacting Leman Instruments – we ensure to offer single customers direct support and are always happy to answer any questions they may have.” If you are interested in finding out more about Leman Instruments, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with the group’s approachable representatives today. Tradition, innovation & continuity – a unique combination

Originally established in 1919 as Foundrometers Ltd, the wellregarded business has specialised in the manufacture, supply and repair of mechanical and electrical instruments for the measurement of rotational movement since then. In 1980 Foundrometers took over the instrument division of Harding of Leeds and subsequently secured its position as a globally recognised leader in the industry. For more than 10 years now, Foundrometers Instrumentation, now called RHEINTACHO UK Ltd. since 2014, has been a subsidiary of the German company RHEINTACHO Messtechnik GmbH. The Leeds-based manufacturer was set up with the principle purpose of providing a vast array of customers with an unparalleled level of service and quality surrounding rotational speed instrumentation. Its extensive inventory of products ranges from mechanical & electrical tachometers to handheld tachometers, portable

& fixed stroboscopes and speed sensors. The company is firmly placed in the measurement sector, but its testing capabilities are utilised in many industries, from shipbuilding to printing and production machinery. Its main customers are distributers and OEMs located in the UK or abroad in Europe and the US, and many of its esteemed clients appreciate the fact that the company is one of the very few offering spares and repairs services professionally. “What makes us stand out from competitors is our high level of quality, our flexibility and speed in connection with delivery reliability and spare parts or repairs,” Paul Hargraves, Director of RHEINTACHO UK, said. “In addition, our parent company is specialised in sensor technology

as a complement technology to our mechanical and electrical products.”

company have definitely been selling best since a year ago.

The business’s renowned commitment to providing complete customer satisfaction extends to flexibility in terms of its S&R services (spares and repairs), as RHEINTACHO UK is willing to fix not only their own products, but also their competitors’. Even instruments from closed companies can be repaired, regardless of how old they may be. If not, they will find an alternative solution.

When discussing the company’s recent performance, Paul said: “The last twelve months have seen a massive restructuring process focussing on process optimization in technical and administrative matters aimed at improving customer satisfaction and the effectiveness of all efforts within the organisation.

RHEINTACHO UK work under the influence of economic, human and socially focused responsibility. “Our mission is to be successful, but to stay human at the same time,” Paul explained. “We operate having acquired a Corporate and Social Responsibility Code of Conduct (ZVEI), and we want to be a leader in efficiency, innovation and quality while running a business focussed on a fair partnership with our customers and suppliers alike.” The company places a direct emphasis on product development and further progression, prioritising innovation and efficiency alongside high value and effective customisation. The most recent addition to the RHEINTACHO UK product portfolio is the ATEX version of the handheld mechanical tachometer (HTM). Both versions of its HTM and the product families of stroboscopes coming from its parent

“Due to closer integration within the organisational structures of our German parent company, RHEINTACHO Messtechnik GmbH, located in Freiburg, the capital of the Black Forest, we now receive very professional support in nearly every department of our company. In addition, we have been provided with the services of a business consultant, William Buhler, who first concentrated on controlling and KPIs. Now, this support is being experienced in marketing and sales activities.” It hasn’t all been smooth-sailing, though: “2014 was a difficult year for RHEINTACHO UK,” Paul admitted. “However, since the beginning of 2015, we have surely been experiencing a strong recovery and by far will surpass our good year in 2013 this year. For several reasons, we are well-positioned for the future. “In comparison to last year, sales are up by approx. 50% and in comparison to forecast we are more than on track. We have been able to enlarge our customer base and reactivate several older customers, and our own product lines are complemented with products we sell for our parent company.”

The future is set to be promising for RHEINTACHO UK, who will be focusing specifically on enlarging its portfolio and securing more jobs in the UK in 2015 and beyond. There are many developments in the pipeline for the notable supplier, who will be receiving further product families from RHEINTACHO Messtechnik GmbH throughout the course of the next few years. “Our plans are to grow with sustainable development and to eventually provide new job opportunities within the next 5 years,” Paul explained. “On a medium to long-term basis, we must also focus on satisfying our parent company. We are going to continue building and expanding our business with renowned global distributors and sales organisations in all relevant product markets. “There will be another product transfer from Germany to Micklefield, based on additional capacity resulting from our lean projects and out proven experience in the manufacture and assembly of measuring instruments. In autumn, 2 staff members will again be visiting Germany to be trained for the project. We are also continuously investigating growth opportunities together with Germany ranging from newly transferred products to potential acquisitions.” Contact: Paul Hargraves T +44 (0)113 287 4411 sales@rheintacho.co.uk www.rheintacho.com Link for HTM (including ATEX version): www.rheintacho.de/ en/products/mechanical-handtachometers/ www.rheintacho.de/ en/products/portablestroboscopes/ www.youtube.com/user/ Rheintacho www.linkedin.com/company/ rheintacho-messtechnik-gmbh www.facebook.com/rheintacho. messtechnikgmbh

A durable water repellent is applied to the ‘fabrics’ surface and the incorporated lining is moisture wicking and antistatic.

In 2008 Stanley Russell decided to put his 30 years of enriched expertise in fabrics to even greater use by setting up his own business. His knowledge in every facet of the sector – from coating to weaving – prompted the budding entrepreneur into starting up a company specialising in high performance products. The resulting APT Fabrics is situated in Northern Ireland and is now a renowned name in the delivery of specialist solutions aimed at the PPE and technical clothing segment. Its competencies extend to customised fabric sourcing and modification services, and seminars, consultancy and technical textile training schemes are also available to be implemented where necessary. The reliable supplier is utilised by companies all over the globe, effectively serving a large range of individuals and organisations: ambulances, utility services, military bases and police forces are a few notable examples of those requiring these specialist fabrics. Its ever-growing customer base is made even more impressive with the addition of those employed at all of the police departments in the UK, who resolutely swear by the meticulously designed waterproof materials delivered to them. Covering such esteemed establishments is a testament to APT Fabrics’ phenomenal level of reliability, professionalism and competency. Founder Stanley was keen to discuss this reputable status in more depth: “Unlike many similar marketed products, ours actually work!” he exclaimed. “Sometimes it can be easy to buy clothing just for the brand name, but it’s so important to ensure that the purchased garments are actually appropriate for your

Automation Company of Choice

Professional bird control systems Solutions UK is extremely proud to present its highly prestigious Automation Company of Choice Award Profile to Robop Ltd. Pest birds are a growing problem for many buildings resulting in thousands of pounds in damage every year. Problems to ventilation, potential fire hazards, damaging machinery and flooding buildings are just a few of the many issues a bird infestation can cause and solving these matters can be extremely costly and time consuming. Robop Ltd has established a ground-breaking solution to solve this problem. Established in 2001, the company’s miraculous resolution, which rivals all other bird control methods, is in the form of a mechanical hunting Peregrine Falcon to scare away pest birds. As the Peregrine Falcon is the main predator for birds and are fast and deadly when catching their pray, all pigeons and seagulls have an inbuilt fear of the falcon. The Robop mimics the behaviour of these Falcons and prevents birds from coming anywhere near buildings. The autonomous Robot moves its head and wings and emits 4 peregrine calls to deter birds from nesting on the roofs of large commercial, public and industrial buildings or structures. It can also be used successfully in open environments such as airport runways, farmland and sports pitches.

Having achieved successful installations in over 16 countries worldwide and with clients across a variety of sectors, this genius creation is backed by experience, expertise and engineering, making it a worthy contender for large scale professional bird control. When asked to discuss what the future holds for Robop, John concluded: “We are still a fairly small company but we provide a quality, personalised service. Our aim is to promote the many benefits that Robop can bring to your building and we truly believe it can be the perfect solution. “Backed by 14 years of experience, precision engineering and Bird behavioural psychology expertise, Robop is built to successfully deter birds whilst maintaining the highest reliability and is supported by knowledge, excellent customer service and aftercare. We welcome any company to get in touch and we will work with you to find an ideal solution that suits your exact needs.” Contact T 0800 999 2522 enquiries@robop.com www.robop.com

“Most people do not realise just how much of a problem pest birds can cause,” commented Managing Director John Donald. “Existing methods such as nets, spikes and repellents are not always effective and only offer temporary solutions. Robop’s method is permanent and will deter birds without causing them any harm. “We know from the reaction of a wide range of bird types that they respond to Robop exactly as they would a real peregrine. So, pigeons and seagulls in their natural state will be terrified of Robop and will leave your property.” Available in 3 power types, battery, mains and solar and with numerous mounting systems engineered to suit a variety of applications, you can tailor a Robop bird control system to suit the needs of your business. An installation service is provided offering a full turnkey solution, or due to its easy of use, Robop can be easily installed yourself. It is designed to withstand harsh weather conditions for many years with minimal maintenance.

great for stripping wood surfaces, both interior and exterior and for stripping paint from stone and cement. With such a short working time (in some cases as little as 25 minutes) and with a quick turnaround for recoating the surface it’s really a great product for your arsenal!”

The humble beginnings of the Smart Cart In 1975, Brigadier General Henry Muller of Santa Barbara in California realised that his 60 year old wife was struggling to man the wheelbarrow in their stable without back pain. Understanding how much his wife loved her horses, he set to designing and creating the first easy to use, lightweight, durable, well-balanced stable cart in the market which he called The Muller’s Stablemate. It became successful in the American market, was renamed ‘The Muller’s Smart Cart’ and is now made in Goreham, Maine. Four years ago, David Fortune’s wife purchased a Smart Cart having seen one belonging to a friend. He put it together for her and thought it was a fantastic product. Later, after discovering that his aged mother’s gardener was struggling to dispose of grass cuttings from her vast lawns, he decided to buy her one but discovered that they were no longer available in the UK. David ordered her Smart Cart directly from Maine and offered to be Muller’s Smart Carts’ new distributor in the UK. They appointed him and Smart Carts UK was born.

“Due to the materials used in a Smart Cart, they are known to last well over 25 years,” David continued. “Each product comes with a 5 year warranty, but the combination of the aircraft quality aluminium alloy frame, the steel cross member, axle and wheels and the exceptionally tough, high impact polyethylene of the tub makes the cart tough, light and virtually indestructible.” How can your Smart Cart transform your daily life? “Wherever you use the carts, whether in the garden, in the stable or on the farm, they are incredibly versatile. Rust resistant and leak free, whatever the season. A Smart Cart makes child’s play out of transporting your straw, hay, feed or heavy fertiliser from A to B. An easily connected tow bar is available to turn your cart into a trailer behind an ATV, even over rough ground. Fill it with ice, beer and wine and your summer party will go with a swing! Gardeners will rejoice in this long-lasting wheelbarrow alternative. The great ‘tip forward’ design makes it simple to unload soil, grass cuttings and even paving stones. Originally designed specifically for stable work, the Smart Cart makes mucking out a pleasure it never used to be!”

What makes the Smart Cart so ‘smart’? “The carts are perfectly balanced, they are light, easily manoeuvrable and very little lifting is required. They’re also built to last decades – 20 to 30 years is not unusual.

With huge capacity (7 and 12 cu ft options), two colours and wheel sizes (16” and 20” diameter) available, why not invest in a Smart Cart? In addition to the carts, see also the Easy Connect Towbar, Muck Caddy and Smart Water Cart.

“The weight of the load in a Smart Cart in motion is balanced over the wheels. Unlike the traditional wheelbarrow design – with a single wheel at one end of the tub and lifting required on the other end – only a little leverage – not lifting of the Smart Cart – is necessary

“Whether transforming buildings from houses to flats or offices to flats (for example), we can capably assist customers as this is a key specialism of ours. We can work to reduce noise levels in factories or assist in the construction of new recording studios, and we also help with the daily problem of noisy neighbours. In essence, this flexibility means that we don’t have a set customer base as such; our products can be utilised by all types of individuals. This includes architects, builders and the general public, and common applications include

Successfully developing with trees-Avoiding the Obstacles. We start by assessing the trees within the site and surrounding area to establish their individual merits and suitability to the setting (sometimes trees which aren’t individually outstanding are still important to a site). Each tree is assessed according to its condition in the present setting and allocated to one of four retention categories, from very important to ‘not appropriate for retention’. These also reflect potential longevity.

enables many clients to overcome their noise issues, which can be increasingly frustrating and in most cases, intolerable. As well as offering a wide range of products, the group have the competency to take on new build projects, bespoke design commissions and house conversion specifications; tasks which require careful consideration of customers’ individual preferences and expectations.

Trees have been part of the planning process since the Town & Country Planning Act of 1947. They are a material consideration and they can be subject to legal protection. This can present challenges when seeking to develop a site. Some developers, wishing to avoid problems, will either avoid sites with trees, or arrange for them all to be felled at the earliest opportunity. However, the middle way, developments that accommodate trees, can be very rewarding.

The trees are measured and plotted on a site plan, with colour coding according to the category. This enables the more important trees to be easily highlighted. Each tree is allocated an area of space around the trunk called the Root Protection Area. This is aimed at providing space below ground and allows us to establish the constraints that the trees would place on development within the site, the Tree Constraints Plan. With this, we can identify the developable parts of a site and the relationship between

the trees and the proposed development.

the developer.

Neighbouring trees also need to be considered, as they can affect a development regardless of how much they may contribute to the setting. Care needs to be taken to fully consider the space that a tree will need above ground, for branch spread. There is the temptation to under record how large a tree is at the moment, and also to assume that it will not grow any more. In my earlier career, I was a tree officer advising a local authority on planning applications and recall one development where three houses were carefully designed around a mature but not fully grown Birch tree, which was a focal point. The tree was shown in drawings smaller than it really was. The construction work would have probably killed the tree, leaving strangely shaped houses and no focal point. A redesign to two larger properties on bigger plots provided more space and a successful outcome, both for the tree and

It is important to consider not just how a development may affect the trees being retained, but also how people will live with them. Issues such as light, shading, future growth and impact on amenity spaces should be factored. An application to re-develop a residential home for housing illustrates. The existing building had been constructed around a large, mature oak tree, which was subject to a Tree Preservation Order. The applicant ensured the tree had space, and designed the new layout around it, incorporating the amenity space where it was growing in to the back garden of one of the new plots.

Feasibility: We start by assessing the key issues that could affect a development. This includes identifying the more important trees within a potential development site, whose retention would be an asset to the site. For trees to be successfully retained within a site, a careful approach is needed with the layout. Trees need space, both above and below ground.

www.facebook.com/solutionsuknews

Whilst the tree continued to flourish, the developer hadn’t considered how much it would dominate the newly-formed garden. Potential buyers were reluctant to buy a luxury house where the rear garden dominated by the oak, which they couldn’t remove. The house had to be discounted to sell. A redesign in the layout could have avoided this. In situations such as this, I find the tree can make an ideal focal point, for example, in a communal area. CRL & Capita Building Standards (CBS), have joined forces STRUCTURAL defects insurance provider CRL and Capita Building Standards (CBS), have joined forces to create a new client portal that streamlines building regulations and warranty services. The CBS Client Portal will provide a consolidated service for building regulation and warranty requirements to revolutionise the current building standards procedure. The portal combines CRL’s ten-year structural defects insurance and Capita’s Approved Inspector building control services in a single online product for public and private sector clients. This combined service will not only provide the end user with the confidence that their application is progressing, but will provide a significant time saving from application submission to completion. At present the end user would hear nothing from submission until their application was either rejected or approved typically between five to eight weeks later. The CBS Client Portal will speed up this entire process at the same time providing it’s users with constant communication as to the progress of the application. CRL’s ten year structural defects product was selected as the preferred warranty and for the first time will be available direct from the portal. Steve Mansour, CEO at CRL Management Limited, said he’s delighted CRL were appointed as Capita’s preferred ten year structural defects provider and predicted a high level of take-up for the product. “For CRL, this partnership means considerable growth - putting CRL directly in contact with local authorities and Capita’s Approved Inspector customers,” he said. “The opportunity for CRL to work with Capita also

brings cutting-edge technology and key strategic partners together to provide a greater service and transparency for all consumers. “Our strong relationship with Capita is borne out of congruent principles of high quality services, exceptional products, innovation and a venturous spirit. “Our offerings go hand-in-hand to provide a full building standards product that will change the face of the industry.” Chris Jones, director at Capita Building Standards, added: “We have created a holistic building standards product that is both transparent, functional and efficient to satisfy the requirements of an everincreasing competitive marketplace. “The portal will provide all clients and local authorities access to building standards related services, offering complete transparency of the building regulations application and inspection process.” www.c-r-l.com

Estimating software for the building industry Solutions UK is extremely proud to present its highly prestigious and richly deserved Commitment to Excellence profile to Easy Price Pro. Builders and tradesmen can cut valuable time spent on estimating by up to 80% with Easy Price Pro’s revolutionary estimation system. Thanks to the various professional reports and the intelligent software produced at a click of a button, this innovative range of programmes has allowed thousands of professionals to win more jobs and produce efficient projects. Designed by a builder for builders, Easy Price Pro was discovered when Managing Director Paul Betts grew tired of wasting so much time on estimates and quotations and began seeking an easier way to do things. Unable to find a useable estimating program for his business, Paul took it upon himself to design his own solution. Having seen how greatly the programme

had benefited his own business and after

investing nearly 12 years into making what was a personal estimating tool, into an accurate, easy to use estimating program, Paul, alongside his dedicated development team, launched Easy Price Pro; a company that would revolutionise estimating jobs for the better. “At Easy Price Pro we know what you want… a quicker, easier and less stressful way of producing estimates,” commented Rachel Betts, Head of Marketing at Easy Price Pro. “Our aim is to assist builders and tradesmen by offering easy to use estimating software to reduce time spent pricing up construction work, improve accuracy and help businesses win more work. “We take pride in offering our clients unique software that is laid out logically in the order that works are carried out and does the thinking for you, whilst giving you the best value for your money.” The advanced programme works by calculating everything for you. All you need to do is enter the required measurements, such as the length and depth of walls, and the system does everything else. The programme then produces a written quotation which details everything the customer needs to know in an easy to read way. This professional document is produced

automatically and is usually a decision maker amongst customers. In order to prevent builders from forgetting minor details resulting in a cut in profit, which is a common problem in the industry, the system calculates everything that is needed to do the job. It also offers an easy ordering system where you can select merchants to purchase from and see where you will get the best deal and when it needs to be ordered by to ensure the project runs as efficiently as possible. Recently released to the ever growing range is the new Job Analyser programme. Working with existing programmes, the system evaluates all jobs which have been completed over the year (or chosen set period), including both accepted and declined quotes, pending jobs and the value of each. This benefits many companies as it gives them an accurate, up to date idea of where they stand and which jobs have been more popular than others.

roofers, bricklayers, ground workers and many more. After listening to customer’s feedback, Paul also expanded the programs EPP produced to cover management programs such as Health and Safety Plus, Easy Builders Contract and ScheduleIT. “Unlike our competitors, our programmes were developed by a builder who truly knows exactly what builders and tradesmen need,” concluded Rachel. “Easy Price Pro has always been the first in the market and ahead of our competitors for new developments. Our aim is to continue to stay ahead of the game and we are currently working on new projects in order to enhance customer experience and help businesses to run as smoothly and efficiently as possible. Contact T 03333 321 502 info@easypricepro.com www.easypricepro.com

Following the major success of the initial programmes such as New Houses and Extensions Estimator, Easy Price Pro decided to expand and help other trades that were struggling with estimates. Therefore, with the help of fellow tradesmen, the company created specialist estimating programs to suit all trades such as electricians, plumbers,

Falling within the Royal Borough of Chelsea and Kensington, Sloane Street is internationally recognised as one of London’s best addresses, famed for its luxury stores, chic shopping and rarefied property market. Under the stewardship of the Cadogan Estate, Charles “Sloane” 1st Earl Cadogan, sold a development lease to architect and builder Henry Holland – perhaps better known as the son-in-law of “Capability Brown”. Holland laid out the street plan for the area encompassing Sloane Street, Sloane Square and Hans Place – to be known for half a century as “Hans Town”. In the early 1800’s Jane Austin moved to No. 64 Sloane Street to be with her brother and literary agent, Henry. It was here that she wrote “Sense and Sensibility”. The world’s only fully covered AV & Power Point

Sync-box is a totally unique recessed power & AV socket, for use when installing wall mounted flat screen televisions. Essentially it is designed around a standard double socket space using the same module components already being used throughout the globe. Sync-box is recessed by 40mm and has a unique cover plate which when in location, has a slender 10mm profile. Therefore, it is now possible to install a new ultra-thin LCD or LED screen with all cables connected professionally and stylishly behind the screen. Entrepreneurs Steve Noyes and Duncan Summers of technology company DSN Innovate Limited, developed the innovative idea which appeared on the hit TV series, Dragons Den. Below Duncan discusses where the idea came from, his experience on Dragons Den and what the future holds for Sync-box.

“I first met Steve, when he came to my home to install some AV equipment, eight years ago. I was intrigued by the AV business and we became friends. Steve owned an AV business and I was the owner of my own successful business. Steve had a few whacky business ideas which we discussed following through. However, the AV industry was changing quickly and none more so than flat screen TV. It was becoming impossible to mount a flat screen to the wall professionally. Steve came up with the idea of recessing the cables and connections, which would solve the problem of mounting flat screen TV’s to a wall. We quickly started down the road of designing and prototyping Sync-box! “After a year of trading, Sync-box was growing quickly. We had sold 3,000 units worldwide with large enquiries coming through from major developers. We have designed and prototyped other products to run with the Sync-box product range and realised we required funding to take Sync-box to the next level. Having approached various investment channels, it was proving to be a long and painful process. I considered applying to Dragons Den for investment as I was confident of the product and thought, it can’t be anymore long-winded or painful than the other avenues of investment we had tried! “To my surprise we were called by the BBC and invited to the London Television Studios for a screen test. This was a few months after the initial application, so as you can imagine, it was a shock when the BBC

called. The screen test was a brilliant experience! The BBC were just fantastic. The actual day of filming Dragon’s Den was amazing. The format has changed this year as we were interviewed before and after we went into the Den. Despite, the hard time we received from the male Dragons, Peter Jones was a true gent. He congratulated us afterwards and had a nice chat with us. It’s a day we will never forget! “Since appearing in the Den, the phone and email enquiries have exploded. We have received multiple calls from various distributors, world-wide. We are talking to a large distributor, based in Dubai whom approached us after seeing the show. This is with regard to supplying Sync-box to three brand new Trump Hotels in India and one in Dubai! The AV industry’s reaction has also been fantastic. We have received so many kind words and congratulation messages! “Initially we are looking to grow the Sync-box product range. This includes a dry wall version (for plaster board walls) and high end metal cover plates for the multimillion £ complexes. It is our intention to grow the business to a £5m turnover in three years by gaining a large presence in the US as well as EMEA. We also have other product solution ideas which we would like to take to market.” Contact www.sync-box.com

Offering effective alternatives to sandbags and utilising higher levels of protection, the company is dedicated to providing an insurable service that delivers thorough and in-depth assistance. “Many people underestimate the astonishing power of water and the problems it can cause,” commented John Alexander, Founder and Managing Director at Aquobex. “It will creep into any small opening and can cause havoc in a very short space of time. If flood protection was treated as a home improvement solution, it would be the best investment ever for properties. “We aim to give peace by implementing solutions that offer protection against a range of flood risk problems. Our approach is underpinned by means of analysis, planning, management, maintenance and the primary awareness of financial factors. We provide flood protection tailored to your market sector, working alongside government bodies, defence organisations, major utility companies, housing organisations and more importantly, insurance and financial groups.”

Their extensive product range consists of flood doors, gates, barriers, shutters and non-return valves to mention but a few. These flood resistance measures can be taken alongside flood resilience measures such as internal finishes which only require cleansing after a flood instead of the usual rip-out, should floodwater overtop the defences. “Our individually tailored 7 step flood protection service package is designed to take you through the necessary steps to ensure that potential flood risk has minimum impact on your home and contents,” explained John. “Measuring the risk from rivers, sea, groundwater and surface water flooding, we provide essential flood warnings, flood maps, data and information, followed by the best advice, and if you choose to implement it, a robust solution. Our approach is delivered in a sensitive and consultative manner, empathetic to any particular financial constraint.” When asked to discuss the company’s plans for the future, John concluded: “Aquobex aims to raise awareness and help convince people that with new technology we can effectively prevent the devastation flooding can cause. We will continue to bring quality solutions to the mass market of the UK and beyond.” T +44 (0)192 351 8582 enquiries@aquobex.com www.aquobex.com

The chances are as a pedestrian and a building user, you’ve been through a few revolving doors in your lifetime. The revolving door is a common sight amongst larger commercial buildings and in many places where there is a high foot fall. The revolving door, usually consists of three or four doors known as wings which are spaced at an eqi-distance from each other around a central shaft. These wings rotate in a circle inside of a cylinder. The size of the cylinder can vary from small, allowing for just enough space for a single user to a larger size which allows enough room for several people, pushchairs or luggage to fit in. It is a well-established fact that the revolving door holds many advantages over the more traditional hinged door. Not only are revolving doors more energy efficient than regular doors but they help to keep the cost of heating and cooling to a minimum. When the users of manual doors open a regular door a large amount of air can escape the building. The installation of a revolving door can help to eliminate this and the amount of air that escapes whilst the door wings of a revolving door circulates is minimal. In this way, drafts are reduced and your lobby area is kept at a comfortable temperature.

door is that they allow more people to enter and exit buildings at a quicker rate. A high frequency mobility hotspot can benefit greatly through the installation of a revolving door as it allows for people to enter and exit a building at the same time without any collisions. A more traditional door results in one person to wait whilst another passes through. Architects often opt for a revolving door to assist with the soundproofing of a lobby area. When in use, a revolving door will help keep out unwanted street noise and will eliminate the sound of slamming doors. They are also the preferred method of entry solution especially within a more confined space as a revolving door will often make a building seem much larger and more majestic in appearance.
