THANKS-LIVING

The holiday season is upon us, and with it comes the sparkle of celebration, connection with friends and family, and a renewed sense of gratitude. It’s the perfect time to adopt what we like to call “thanks-living”—a mindful approach to carrying gratitude with us in every moment. This season of Thanksgiving and Christmas is a reminder to celebrate not only the big gatherings, but also the quiet, everyday moments we can often overlook. In my home, I am reminded of the simple joys that make this time of year so special for my family.

As we prepare for festive gatherings, there’s something magical in wrapping ourselves—not only in style (see our cover story “Wrap Yourself in Style” featuring XAR Clothier beginning on page 26)—but also in the warmth of togetherness and thankfulness. It’s a time to wrap ourselves in gratitude and the love of those around us... while also wrapping all of those gifts! This season is all about gathering together—be it with family, friends, or those who feel like family—and celebrating the moments that bring us closer. We invite you to embrace the season and the spirit of living with thankfulness in all that we do.

In this issue, we’re excited to share inspiration to help you live your best life—from chic outfits that make a statement for festive occasions (page 30 for “FW24” style trends) to our thoughtful gift guides curated for everyone on your list. A Magic Evermore BOOK ONE IN THE MIRRI LANGLEY SERIES

The first book in author Michelle Massie’s duology, A Magic Evermore: Book One in the Mirri Langley Series includes all the ingredients for a fun fantasy, plus more. The opening paragraph introduces us to Amara, the story’s villain, who rules the Panthera, a race of half-human, half-panther creatures. Amara’s role in the story results in a twist unforeseen until the final pages of the book.

Mirri, our human girl hero, finds herself whisked from her frustrating, everyday, fifteen-year-old life to the fantastical land of Althord Loch, where the Panthera have taken for themselves all the magic belonging to the other citizens of the area. Early on she meets, Smidge and his elf friends, who name her Voktare, Keeper of the Story. This designation also results in a plot twist well worth waiting for.

The inhabitants of this world include newly minted creatures and plants as well as some classic characters like centaurs and not a few straight from Massie’s imagination. All these details give the reader a whimsical sense of the place where Mirri has landed and where she must follow her quest to what she hopes will be a happy ending.

Mirri’s coming of age experience, also a classic trope of fantasy novels, gives the story a familiar structure the reader can relate to. But during her journey she meets so many strange specimens and overcomes so many unusual obstacles that keep the plot moving along quickly.

A magic journal helps guide Mirri and her friends through their journey, providing useful but sometimes cryptic statements to assist them in determining their next steps. The journal connects back to a friend of Mirri’s in the “real world,” an antique storeowner who has a surprising relationship with one of the members of Mirrii’s traveling pack.

As in any worthwhile quest, sacrifices are required. Not all of Mirri’s friends survive to the end of her tale. She builds strong bonds of trust and friendship that make her losses meaningful and teach her the value of relationships in both her worlds.

While the suggestion at the end of the novel that Mirri’s experience was “only a dream” is not super satisfying, we know there’s more to come in her next adventure: A Secret Nevermore.

In October, a charitable TikTok trend united mothers throughout the nation. The ‘She Deserved the Purse’ movement seeks to support moms who have to make tough choices for the sake of their children. This holiday season in North Texas, the same phenomenon will hit too close to home for numerous families as parents are forced to choose between Christmas gifts and essentials. Through the Salvation Army’s annual Angel Tree program—one of the largest in the world—North Texans now have the opportunity to ensure neighbors in need experience the joy of Christmas morning. With a record number of 45,000 Angels eligible for adoption this year, the need for generous donors is greater than ever. The number of children in need of gifts per family has increased from an average of 3.5 to 4.3—and the Angel Tree team has seen an increase in large families with 6-10 children needing assistance. During the season of giving, North Texans can allow mothers in our community to skip the heart-wrenching decision between celebration and survival. The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program in North Texas needs the community’s help to brighten Christmas morning for 45,000 children, seniors, and adults with special needs this year. Dallas Galleria Grand Tree Lightings

For most North Texans, the finest visual of the Galleria Dallas Christmas Tree is during the center’s famed Grand Tree Lightings, which occur at noon Black Fri., Nov. 29 and Sat., Nov.

Laura has three children: Claire 24, Ava 11, Elyse 11. Laura lives with her husband, and their girls in Southlake. Here’s what she had to say…

SOCIETY LIFE: What’s one of your earliest memories you have of your Mom? LAURA LEMONADE: I remember her singing to me and rocking me as a small child. She was always so loving. She sang to me a lot. I remember the way I felt when she held me. I felt safe and loved.

SL: What is something you thought about Motherhood that was totally wrong? LL: Before I became a mother, I had no idea just how much love a human can actually have for another human being. I felt a magnitude of love for my girls as each year passed.

SL: What’s something you always wanted to do but didn’t... and why didn’t you? LL: I wanted to move to California when I was a young lady and pursue acting. I thought it would be fun, but it sounded like a very undisciplined thing to do. Although I never moved to Los Angeles, I love to travel everywhere I can now. I think I am making up for it!

SL: Was there something your Mom did when you were a kid that you swore you’d never do as a parent? LL: Yes! My mom was a travel agent and in the travel industry for over 30 years. I swore I would never be in the industry. I grew up going to a lot of places with my mom. It was both good and bad. I got to see and experience so many things, but I got burned out when I was young. Oh my goodness! Did my mom ever have the last laugh!

SL: What did you think you wanted to be when you grew up? LL: I wanted to be the director of a Broadway show. I always loved dance, acting, and theater.

SL: How have your notions of what it means to be a Mom changed over your lifetime? LL: I used to think it was easier than it is for me. I find myself writing letters to my daughters now to give to them when they are older. My heart feels more concerned for them than I had ever anticipated feeling. I had no idea that I would love these little humans so fiercely. With my oldest daughter, our relationship has grown into a friendship and a mentorship. This is so beautiful to me.

SL: What’s the best family vacation you’ve ever taken? LL: Costa Rica! I designed an epic trip for my twin girls and husband that had us starting in Panama, taking tiny planes, seeing the Blue Zone in Costa Rica, experiencing off the beaten path parts of Costa Rica filled with swimming in volcanic waters, exploring the rainforest, hanging bridges, and so much more. We went this past summer and it was a family favorite. I watched my girls get out of their comfort zone and do things they have never done before. It was like we were living the true definition of “Pura Vida”—Pure Life.

SL: Is there a moment or event that radically changed the way you saw Motherhood? LL: Yes. A few years ago, one of my twins had a scary time when she was having unexplainable debilitating head pain that would not go away. It affected her daily life. We felt desperate. We tried everything we could think of to help her. We were in the hospital a lot with her. Doctors could not figure out what was causing the terrible pain. It was that year that I saw motherhood differently. I realized I would walk the earth for her and do anything to take away her pain. It was a very hard and sad year for our family. We are happy to report that she is now pain free and living her best life.

SL: When did you know you were ready to have kids? LL: Claire has been in my life since she was five years old. She is my step daughter, but I call her mine because I love her so much. I have never viewed her as ‘not mine.’ I loved her, but was not sure if I was ever “doing a good job.” I was highly critical of myself. Interestingly enough, my whole life, I did not think I wanted to have children because I was very focused on my career. I knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur from a young age. I felt that until I reached a certain level of achievement, I would not be a good mother. One day, I was at lunch with my mom for my birthday and I received a call from my OBGYN. They had found some cells that could be “precancerous” and wanted to test them. The test came back negative, but I was left feeling as though I needed to make a decision that day. Did I want more kids? Was I even a good mother to Claire? Would I be a good mother to another baby? The thought of being faced

with not having any more kids slapped me in the face. It was at that moment, I decided I wanted to have another child. I went home and told my husband that evening that we are going to try. He always wanted a baseball team sized family, so he was thrilled. I told him I wanted one. Twins came instead and I was shocked and felt like God knew I was the right fit for these twin girls. I love all three of my girls so much! God knew what He was doing.

SL: What’s your favorite photo of your family or kids? LL: There is one photo of us walking in the woods together that sits up on my mantle. I like to think of us as waking through time—through stages of life together. This picture makes me smile.

SL: What was the first year of motherhood like for you? LL: With Claire, it was great! I spent time getting to know her and love grew between us. With my twins, I had postpartum depression. Sadly, when I had my twins, I had to give up the business that I had worked very hard on. I felt like I had lost part of my identity. I got on social media as “Laura Lemonade,” to help other moms who may be going through the same thing. The intention was to be a light and positive. “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade” always resonated with me. I did not realize it then, but it would be that perspective that would help me to overcome so much throughout the following years. It was one of the hardest times of my life. I am so grateful that 11 years ago, I found a loving community of moms locally and surrounded myself with them. They were so helpful and as time passed, I was able to overcome being sad and help others who were struggling with postpartum depression.

SL: What do you want or wish most for your kids? LL: I wish for them that they will grow up and use the gifts God gave them to help others as much as possible. I try to teach them to do good in this world. I tell them that empathy is more important to me than being number one at something. Growth is measured with the amount of love and empathy we can give others.

SL: What are some of your biggest struggles as a Mom? LL: I have this vision of what I want to build. My brother was hit by a drunk driver on the way to school when I was three-years-old and he was only seven-years-old. He suffered severe brain damage and to this day, lives with my parents. My whole reason for wanting to build a successful business is so that I can help him and others like him to have a better quality of life. I know it takes so much effort and energy to build a business. I think of him every day as I struggle to find balance between building and being fully present as a mom. I love my kids so much. I can only hope that they can see and feel it and also see someday that every baby step I take towards building a better future for all of us is because the vision is so much bigger than just me. I want them to know that it was never really about me, but about all of us, our community. We can all do better and this is part of my calling.

SL: What would your perfect day off be like? Describe it. LL: A perfect day off would involve me hanging out with my good friends enjoying sunshine and laughter. It would end with me getting into some kind of mischievous adventure. I love things that are out of the ordinary. Surprises are my favorite... I love surprises! So, if I had friends who surprised me on my day off and took me somewhere I had never been, this would be so cool! I love experiences that are impromptu and out of my comfort zone.

SL: What’s the one song that means the most to you? LL: Lately, I love the song, “Waves” by Imagine Dragons.

SL: What advice would you give to your younger self about Motherhood? LL: I would tell myself that you will find your own groove. Listening to the advice of others about how Motherhood should look and feel is not what you should do because Motherhood is what you make it. It is unique to you. It is uniquely your journey.

SL: Is there a quote, saying, words of advice or scripture you consider words to live by? LL: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” — by Maya Angelou

SL: If you could share a meal with any woman past, present or future who would it be? Why? LL: I would love to share a meal with my future 80-year old self. I would ask myself what advice I would give to the woman I am at this very moment in time.

SL: What Mom from real-life or even TV/movies do you admire most? LL: I know it sounds biased, but I admire my mother most because of her strength. She endured a lot with what happened to my brother. I know that was extremely hard for her. Yet, she always managed to make me feel as though I was so loved and special to her.

SL: At the end of a long day, what do you do for fun or relaxation? LL: I love to dance! Dancing is therapeutic for me. I love to dance salsa, but really any type of dance makes me happy. I also love to skate. I was a figure skater when I was a young girl. To me, it feels like flying.

HIS PERSPECTIVE: STORIES FROM FATHERHOOD

My 13-year-old daughter returned from school with a sour look on her face. It was out of character. Typically, she has good days at school. A teacher had asked her a question to which she did not know the answer, so she responded with awkward silence. It embarrassed her, and she then carried the embarrassment home. I shared with her that it was okay and we all have moments of awkward silence. One day, I might share a few of mine with her. In the meantime, I will share them with you.

When I was a college senior, I had an interview with a conservative financial company in New York City. It was during flu season. It felt like a dream. Partly because I dreamed of living in NYC, but mostly from the regular shots of Nyquil. Nothing would get in the way of this opportunity, not even illness. I arrived for the panel interview with a fever of 104 degrees and a nausea bag. As ill as I was, I did my research. I knew the lead interviewer of the panel of six, had a degree in psychology.

I don’t remember most of the Q&A on that day, but I do vividly remember the last two questions and the absurdity of my answers. The second to last interview question was to describe what motivates me. A short circuit occurred in my fevered head. I answered the question in a manner that I thought would appeal to the leader’s background in psychology. I explained my motivation in terms of Psych 101. With the help of Sigmund Freud, I crossed the line into the inappropriate and into the orchard where the fruit is ripe for lawsuits.

I sensed the panel didn’t like my answer by their uncomfortable body language. A solid minute of awkward silence ensued. It was broken when an interviewer had the courtesy to ask, with hesitation, if there was anything else I would like to share. With sweat dripping down my forehead and with a glass-eyed stare, I assured them that I was a hard worker and would be a good fit for their culture. They squirmed even more.

The NYC job did not pan out. A few months later, I found a job in North Texas and with it, coincidently, a girlfriend. As with most things acquired in my early 20s, the girlfriend was relatively short-lived. I can’t remember the exact reason for the break-up. I’m not even sure there was one. Mistakenly, I conferred with my mother in search of an answer. Without merit or abiding by common decency, she offered a derivation of the Freudian theory that I offered the NYC interview panel. I went deaf and retreated into an awkward silence. Maybe my mother had a fever of 104.

After that deafening conversation, I limped forward into the next 30 years to today where, once again, I experienced uncomfortable silence. It was at the workplace.

My workplace uses icebreakers to start meetings. The intention of an icebreaker is to focus attention on the meeting at hand. The icebreakers distract me. They tickle my brain, and it’s hard for me to answer with the expected. Corporate America does not like to be tickled by the unexpected.

A recent icebreaker question asked what do you like to “eat on repeat.” The 15 people before me responded with the expected. Most liked tacos, burgers and pizza. One person even liked “crunchy” peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. When it was my turn, I shared that I like to eat pain on repeat, and the pain I liked best was the crunchy kind and without jelly.

Then awkward silence came to visit. It broke when a colleague, as not to offend, informed me that pain is not food. I agreed and shared that “eat pain” is a metaphor. I didn’t share that I had just eaten 10 minutes of it via participation in the icebreaker. Dissatisfied with the metaphor explanation, a second wave of silence ensued. The icebreaker would not progress until I answered in a more conventionally acceptable manner. As a compromise, I changed my “eat on repeat” to oven-hot, mouth blistering, pizza. Skeptically, they accepted it and moved on to person number 17—and I vowed to silence my tickled brain.

As a child, Sharon Herron was abused by her father, both physically and mentally. He would beat her with a harsh voice, a leather belt, and his giant fists. He always had to be in control. She could never talk about it or tell anyone. The abuse was her dirty little secret. One year after her father passed, Sharon married her high school sweetheart. She was excited about starting their life together and leaving all the

Their job is to assist SafeHaven of Tarrant County in their mission to end family violence by providing financial support through fundraising, volunteer services, and promoting community awareness of family violence.

abuse and sadness behind. She was only married for a few days when she took the first blow to her head. She thought to herself, “What’s wrong with me?” He was obsessive, jealous, and constantly shifting the blame. He took away everything she loved and cared about, including her very identity. One morning, Sharon opened her closet to get ready for work. Her entire wardrobe was shredded. The scary thought was he had to use either scissors or a knife to commit this violent act when she was only a few feet away sleeping. As the years passed, the violence became progressively

worse. For the second time in her life, she had to live with that dirty little secret. At 24-years-old, he put his hands around her throat and choked her unconscious. She woke to see his arms flailing in the air as he was crying and screaming, “Oh God, what have I done?” When he saw she had opened her eyes, he dropped to his knees and said, “I thought I killed you.” He promised never to hurt her again. Sharon knew it was only a matter of time. One day, her 5-year-old daughter became her protector and jumped on his back while crying to let go of her Mommy. Blessed that her daugh-

ter had saved her life, Sharon was sorrowful that she had to experience violence at such a tender age. Two weeks later, they moved out and were free. Today, Sharon works tire lessly as 2nd Vice President of Ways and Means for Mid-Cities SOS and is happily married to an incredible man who shows her what love truly means. But still, people ask why she didn’t leave. Her response is the same: “Please understand that leaving is not an event. It is not any one point in time. Leaving is a process! God saved my life so I could be here today to help the women and children of domestic violence.”

SOS CARES FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SURVIVORS

Mid-Cities SOS believes everyone deserves to live in a safe and loving home. For almost four decades, Mid-Cities SOS has been car ing for the women and children of domestic violence by providing shelter, counseling, legal aid, housing, and other resources. It all began in 1985, when 25 women from the Mid-Cities area, disturbed by domestic violence in Northeast Tarrant County, founded Mid-Cities Supporters of the Shelter, a taxexempt 501c3 organization supporting The Women’s Shelter in Arlington. In 2006, The Women’s Shelter and Women’s Haven of Fort Worth merged to become SafeHaven of Tarrant County. The organization’s name was changed to Mid-Cities Supporters of SafeHaven (SOS). President of Mid-Cities SOS, Connie Nichols, says, “Financial support of SafeHaven of Tarrant County is our number one priority! We hope you’ll help us create survival stories by becoming a member, volunteering, donating and/or giving.”

Domestic violence not only affects those abused, but also has a substantial effect on family, friends, coworkers, other witnesses, and community at large. Most intimate partner homicides in the U.S. happen by gunshot. If your partner strangles you, you are 700x more likely to be strangled by them a second time and 800x more likely to die at their hands, typically by gunshot. Roughly 76 percent of femicide victims are stalked before being murdered.

EMPOWERING SURVIVORS INVESTING IN HOPE

Domestic violence is a severe problem that affects millions of people in the U.S. each year. In Tarrant County alone, there were over 11,000 domestic violence incidents reported in 2024. Mid-Cities SOS is proud to have raised over $3.4 million to provide shelter, counseling, legal aid, housing, and other essential resources for the women and children who need it most.

POWER AND CONTROL

Domestic violence is a pervasive, insidious, and life-threatening crime. One-in-3 women will be abused in their lifetime. One-in-15 children are exposed to intimate partner violence each year, and 90% of them are eyewitnesses to the violence. Abuse comes in many forms: physical, emotional, financial, sexual, and even spiritual. One main reason a woman goes back to her abuser is because she doesn’t have a safe place to go. When victims decide to leave their abusers, the

Fresh rosemary

(1) Place sugared cranberries in a bowl and place on board.

(2) Make a salami rose and flip onto board.

(3) Arrange cheeses and prosciutto around platter. Add leaf crackers, cranberry crackers, and apple slices. Fill any gaps with dried apricots and almonds. Finish with rosemary sprigs.

(4) Finally, spoon homemade cranberry sauce over the cream cheese and serve.

One of the hallmarks of Son of a Butcher is its dedication to variety.

Guests are encouraged to mix and match sliders—building their meals with different flavor profiles. Popular choices include the “Classic” slider featuring American cheese, pickles and the bar’s signature sauce... the “The Popper” with fried jalapeño, cream cheese and pepper jam... and the “Edgy Veggie,” pairing a housemade black bean patty and jalapeno aioli. My not-to-be missed sliders are from the chicken category. I already know that you’re going to try a Wagyu slider, but you would be missing out if you didn’t throw a chicken into the mix. The “Nashville Hot” showcases a juicy fried chicken patty, pimento cheese, hot sauce and a pickle. Each ingredient simple, but together, it’s dynamite. The “Frikka Tikka” is what I can only describe as “adventure” between two buns. Fried chicken is topped with paneer cheese, cilantro, basil, lime mayo and a spicy tikka sauce.

In addition to sliders, SoB also offers a range of side dishes complementing its menu. Guests can indulge in crispy Waffle Fries, Onion Rings or Mac &

Cheese. Not-to-be-missed side item is Thai Chili Brussels Sprouts. Crispy Brussels get a generous bath of Thai Chili sauce and a sprinkle of sesame seeds. The bar is also well-known for its decadent milkshakes, which are crafted to be both visually stunning and satisfyingly rich. These shakes can be enjoyed in classic flavors or spiked for an adults-only twist. Fan favorites include Red Velvet, Banana Foster and Salted Caramel Pretzel.
