THE GIVING SEASON

The holiday season is upon us and with it brings a magic in the air that reminds us to celebrate all of the things—big or small—that make life special. Whether it’s the glow of Christmas lights, the laughter around a festive table, or the joy of gathering with family and friends, this time of year invites us to celebrate togetherness, gratitude, and the warmth of good company. Christmas and New Year’s bring a unique blend of reflection and hope—a chance to cherish what has been and to dream of what’s to come.

As I remind my three kids often... this season is about more than just the gifts wrapped in shiny paper and bows under the tree. This season also has a way of reminding us of the power of giving. Whether it’s the thoughtful gifts chosen and exchanged, a donation to a charity close to your heart, or simply a kind gesture to brighten someone’s day—giving is what truly makes this time of year magical. The spirit of generosity, compassion, and selflessness lights up the world in ways that no string of lights ever could. It’s in the kindness we can show to a stranger, the support we can offer to those in need, and in the love we share with the people who make our lives brighter. As we exchange presents, I will also be striving to remember to give the gift of my time, my compassion, and generosity.

As we turn the page to 2025, it brings with it a sense of renewal and possibility. It’s a chance to reflect on the joys of the past year, learn from our mistakes as to not repeat them, and set our sights on all of the opportunities that lie ahead. In 2025, may your days be filled with reasons to smile, moments of pure joy, and the kind of connections that make life truly meaningful.

I hope to carry the spirit of giving and togetherness into the New Year—embrace opportunities to spread kindness, strengthen relationships, and pursue the things that bring us joy. May this coming year be one filled with smiles, laughter, and moments that leave your heart full. From all of us here at Society Life Magazine, we wish you a holiday season rich with love and laughter, and a New Year that shines bright with happiness and the gift of possibility.

New Year’s Day is a day of resetting hearts, which have wandered, and of restoring the habit of turning to Christ every day for a fresh start, not in a new relationship, but in a relationship with Jesus, which is always growing.

While many are deciding how to celebrate on December 31st and figuring out their New Year’s resolutions, what should we be doing as Christians? There might not be one “right” way to observe the transition from 2024 to 2025, but here are some thoughts to help believers stay Christ-focused.

A FRESH START FOR THE NEW YEAR

No matter what people believe, many look at January 1 as a chance for a new beginning. If the previous year was disappointing or we made significant mistakes—imagine wiping the slate clean and starting over. Christians know that new starts are available any time, they are not dictated by the calendar. “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning” (Lamentations 3:22-23). All those who confess and repent their sin can enjoy freedom from regret and shame. They can find courage to endure through trials. Joy and mercy are available for every believer, all the time. A new year, however, inspires this kind of thought process.

1. NEW RESOLUTION: CONFESSION

Starting over can mean making resolutions, but quitting smoking, starting a diet a gym membership is only the beginning of a “fresh start.” If there is a sin issue in any person’s life, he or she can address it right now. In fact, peace awaits the one who is quick to confess and repent of sin. “Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the LORD” (Psalm 32:10). Bad habits and addictions are symptomatic of deeper issues. Rather than making a resolution to quit doing something or start doing something else, take advantage of this renewed impetus to face sin in your life and find freedom from its effects through the Father’s loving direction. Habits or addictions enslave a person—they rob peace. The New Year is a perfect time to dig up the roots of trouble by the power of the Holy Spirit, under the assurance that honest and wholehearted repentance leads to life and peace (2 Corinthians 7:10). Remember these words from the Apostle John: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteous-

ness” (1 John 1:9). Jesus does not want his people to be burdened by their sin. He wants them to experience freedom.

2. REMEMBER ALL THE LORD HAS DONE

“Take care lest you forget the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery” (Deuteronomy 6:12). Christians are enjoined to never forget what their Lord has done for them. A Christian who obtains his greatest joy from the Lord sees January 1 as a time to remember the goodness of God as it has unfolded across the past year. Sometimes the details of God’s intervention are only obvious when one surveys his goodness over time. We can never remember the Lord’s grace and mercy and love towards us too often. Remembering Christ is essential—the more one does this the better. However, the start of a New Year might also bring difficulties. If this is a difficult season, go back to Hebrews 4:15, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.” Recall that Christ knows the temptations you face, the suffering you endure. He is able to sympathize, so turn to him without fear.

“This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

This is the Psalmist’s exhortation for every day, not just New Year’s Day — not only on good days when we anticipate the company of others and celebration. Every day is the Lord’s Day and every day we are His.

— Psalm 118:24

3. CELEBRATE THE NEW YEAR

Christians do not need to avoid “fun” as though Christ was averse to it. God does not demand that we be serious all the time.

Adrian Rogers explains, “Jesus was not a recluse. He performed His first miracle at a wedding, when He changed water into wine. He was so full of life that His enemies called Him a wine bibber and a glutton. He was not, but there was in Him a genuine joy, and if you don’t have that joy, you’re not like Jesus, for He is literally leaping with joy.” We are not called into debauchery, that is not joy—but we are encouraged by Christ’s example to be filled with the exuberance for life, which is living inside of us by the Holy Spirit. “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” (Romans 8:1415). We have so much reason to celebrate.

4.

CHRIST COMING CLOSER

Every year, someone predicts the end of the world. This so-called prophet names a year and tells the world not only when, but how it will end. With each new catastrophe and major conflict between world powers, Armageddon seems nigh, but only God knows when the end will come (Matthew 24:36). Yet, every January 1, many Christians wonder “will this be the year Jesus returns?” One thing is for sure: Jesus’ return is sooner today than it was yesterday. With that in mind, we prepare. We are God's children now, and [...] we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure (1 John 3:2-3). John Piper explains what it means to be in Christ: “if you really want to be like him by seeing him when he comes, you’ll pursue being like him now. You will.” In other words, the New Year is a reminder to keep Jesus ever in the forefront of our minds. New Year’s Day is no different from any other day as far as Christ is concerned. For the believer, however, the very idea of throwing out an old calendar and starting with 12 clean pages is a poignant reminder that the pages, like our lives, quickly become messy.

As Time Goes By

A Collection of Poetry and Prose

Modern day poets are few and brave. Even braver and fewer are those who hold themselves to a particular poetic form such as the sonnet. Kollin Kennedy is one of those brave poets. In his book, As Time Goes By he shares a collection of sonnets and fictional letters.

A sonnet is generally 14 lines long and written in the meter of iambic pentameter. Poets can be compared to athletes who train their bodies and muscles to work within the confines of the rules of a certain “game.”

In the introduction to his book, Kollin provides for the reader some helpful information about the sonnet titles. Those that include First Perspective are written from the first person point of view. If you see Study in the title that means that Kollin used that poem as a part of a larger study or project. A few that include A Study of the Humors are comedic experiments.

While Kollin may use a format also used by Shakespeare in the 16th century, many of the poems have a modern flair. One entitled Ferrari Gran Turismo Omolgato expresses his admiration of that super expensive vehicle. Some follow Biblical themes such as the doubts of the apostle Thomas and the

experience of Abraham when God asked him to sacrifice his son. These poems give us a window into what emotions these characters may have been feeling. Those are things we can only imagine since the scriptural accounts don’t share that information.

Some of the poems introduce us to or call us back to characters from Greek mythology. One praises Alcestis—a princess from Greek mythology who died in her husband’s place. Heracles, one of the Greek heroes, rescued her from the underworld. And of course many of the sonnets deal with love and relationships, just as Shakespeare’s did. As poetry does, they give expression to those experiences we’ve all known like communication breakdowns, rejection, deceit, partings and desire for someone we can never have.

This slim volume runs only 136 pages, so be prepared to take some time with the sonnets as you would any kind of poetry. If you rush through you take the chance of missing the nuance and hidden meaning that can be revealed. As you familiarize yourself with the characters and read several of the poems the unusual form and syntax will open itself up to you.

The greatest legends of ancient times voice their thoughts on power, love, and all that lies between
History comes alive transcending the bounds of time

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Kollin Kennedy was born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He earned his BA in English Creative Writing from the University of North Texas and a handful of leadership certificates from Louisiana State University. A successful poet, Kollin’s passion arose from Renaissance period writings and art. He spends an equal amount of time in the gym, playing his guitar and participating in open mics when he can. Kollin loves to collect sports memorabilia and spend time with family and friends, in and around the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex where he resides

GORGEOUS HERITAGE HILL QUEEN ANNE VICTORIAN MANSION AWAITS HER NEXT CHAPTER

EVERLASTING LEGACY

The enchanting Heritage Hill Queen Anne Victorian Mansion, a masterpiece of 1895 architecture, is now available for its next chapter. Designed by renowned American architect George Franklin Barber, this elegant home began as a gift from Dr. Robert E. Lee Kincaid to his wife, Kate, in Bonham, Texas. Now owned by Ms. Joan Vandergriff, the mansion has been lovingly preserved and reimagined as a timeless Victorian showpiece.

Originally known as the Kincaid Mansion, the home was relocated from Bonham to Colleyville in 1985 when Ms. Vandergriff purchased and restored it. The journey was no small feat—each piece of the house was meticulously moved and reassembled to retain its historic integrity. The foyer proudly displays framed lumber receipts from 1899, documenting the original construction cost of just $2,425, a testament to the Kincaid family’s commitment to quality craftsmanship.

The Kincaid family of Bonham had close ties to former House Speaker Sam Rayburn and entertained often with the home serving as a brilliant showplace. Ms. Vandergriff decided to buy a Victorian-era home after she toured local homes in Waxahachie. When the Kincaid Mansion, with its stick and ball trim detail, was discovered in Bonham, Ms. Vandergriff knew that she had found her forever home and undertook the task of moving the home to Colleyville, piece-by-piece. The home was then painstakingly restored by Ms. Vandergriff and re-christened as Heritage Hill. She has meticulously maintained the home’s original splendor and stayed true to the period with her renovation.

The 4,854-square-foot, two-story mansion includes a large attic space—not covered in that square footage. Heritage Hill features a round turret, six gables, eight ornate fireplaces, and intricate Victorian ornamentation. Highlights include 12-foot ceilings, five bedrooms, three bathrooms, a parlor, a butler’s pantry, and antique stained-glass windows, including one installed by the Kincaid family that was already a century old.

Ms. Vandergriff’s dedication to preserving the home’s history extends to its décor. Furnished with period antiques, the residence is a living museum of Victorian elegance. Now, as the home transitions to a new chapter, its contents—including exquisite furnishings and rare

JOHN WAYNE STOCK & SUPPLY DEBUTS COLLECTION AVAILABLE AT JOHN WAYNE: AN AMERICAN EXPERIENCE

John Wayne Stock & Supply, the flagship retail shop at John Wayne: An American Experience in the Fort Worth Stockyards, isn’t just continuing a name—it’s preserving a legacy, ensuring that the values Duke stood for remain alive. This isn’t just about honoring the past, it’s about protecting the principles that shaped our nation and ensuring they’re carried forward for generations to come. The Second Amendment was very important to John Wayne. He believed that it isn’t just a right—it’s a responsibility. It’s a reminder that in this country, power remains where it belongs— with the people. These values are reflected in John Wayne Stock & Supply’s new Second Amendment Collection. John Wayne understood the weight of responsibility that comes with freedom. He portrayed men who lived by a code, who stood tall in the face of adversity, and who knew that some things were worth fighting for. Offscreen, he lived those values himself. “This collection is a look back to the ideas that created the greatest country in the history of the world. Let’s never forget how incredibly well thought out and written they are,” said Ethan Wayne, president of John Wayne Enterprises. The 16-piece Second Amendment Collection is made up of tees, hats, a brass Zippo lighter, a pocket copy of the U.S. Constitution, and steel signs by JDH Iron Designs, best known from appearances on ‘Fixer Upper’ with Chip and Joanna Gaines. This collection isn’t just about the past—it’s about the future. It’s about ensuring the freedoms this country was built on are still here for the next generation. YOUR FUTURE SMILE’S SO BRIGHT, WE GOTTA WEAR SHADES!

Celebrating Over 40 Years of Excellence

For four decades, one relationship-driven dental practice in Southlake has set the standard for clinical excellence. Located in the same spot since 1984, this unique practice, led by Dr. Greg Gist, has grown from a one-man operation to a nationally-recognized restorative and cosmetic dental practice with both national and international acclaim. But despite its growth and success, the core values of this practice have remained unchanged — a commitment to world-class care, personalized service, and a dedication to maintaining patients’ natural teeth for their lifetime.

COVER STORY

GIST & HAYES DENTISTRY

Southlake’s First Dentist: Dr. Gist’s Vision for the Community

When Dr. Greg Gist opened the doors of his practice in 1984, Southlake's population was estimated to be fewer than 800 people. Back then, the town was a quiet, tight-knit community, and few could have predicted that the future of Southlake would be shaped in part by one man’s vision. Dr. Gist’s impact on the community has extended beyond his role as a dentist. In 1985, he designed the first city logo for Southlake, a contribution that cemented his place in the community's history. As the first dentist in Southlake, Dr. Gist built not only a thriving dental practice, but also lasting relationships with generations of families. Today, the practice continues to serve as a cornerstone of the Southlake area where Dr. Gist still sees patients offering a blend of modern technology and a timeless approach to dental care. From the moment you step into the office, you’ll know this practice is different. The ambiance is one of warmth, comfort, and trust—qualities that set it apart from typical dental offices. As a boutique-style restorative practice, the team focuses on delivering world-class care that is as much about the overall experience as it is about the outcome. Dr. Gist and his associate, Dr. Carter Hayes, take a comprehensive approach to dental health, prioritizing the long-term preservation of natural teeth while offering both restorative and cosmetic solutions tailored to each patient’s needs.

PERSONALIZED APPROACH

“We strive to maintain our patients’ natural

teeth for

a

lifetime,” admits Dr. Gist. “Our philosophy is rooted in excellence and a deep commitment to building relationships with our patients. We take the time to understand each individual’s dental needs and goals, and we offer the highest level of care, combining cutting-edge technology with tried-and-true protocols.”

LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE

Dr. Greg Gist's credentials are a testament to his dedication to clinical excellence. After graduating with honors from Texas Tech University, he earned his doctorate from Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas. He then furthered his education at the prestigious Strupp School of Prosthetic Dentistry. Over the years, he has become a leader in the field of restorative and cosmetic dentistry—building a practice that is as renowned for its clinical precision as it is for its warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Dr. Hayes, who joined the practice to partner with Dr. Gist in continuing the legacy of excellence, brings his own impressive credentials to the table. He graduated from Abilene Christian University with honors before earning his doctorate from The University of Texas Health Science Center/College of Dentistry in San Antonio. Dr. Hayes and his wife, Shelby, are committed to raising their family in Northeast Tarrant County and are thrilled to be part of a practice with such a rich legacy. “I am truly honored to be partnering with Dr. Gist in this unique practice,” shares Dr. Hayes. “This practice is unlike any other in the marketplace. I’m committed to continuing the legacy of excellence that Dr. Gist has built over the past 40 years.”

The World Class Dental Team Behind the Excellence

The excellence of this practice is not just in the hands of Dr. Gist and Dr. Hayes. The dedicated dental hygienists, assistants, and staff are integral to the exceptional care provided here. With decades of experience, the exceptional dental assistants and hygienists are highly trained in the protocols established by Dr. Gist and are leaders in their field. Most patients consider the team not just their dental care providers, but personal friends—a true testament to the lasting relationships that are fostered in this practice as commonplace. “Our dental assistants are some of the best in the industry,” says Dr. Gist. “They have been with us for years and are instrumental in maintaining the high standards of care our patients have come to expect. We are fortunate to have such an incredible team.”

A Commitment to Comfort and Technology

One of the hallmarks of this practice is its unwavering focus on patient comfort. Dr. Gist’s practice was one of the first in the area to embrace the concept of oral sedation to ensure patients are comfortable during minor or major restorative work. The team pre-medicates adult patients with safe, effective oral sedation, allowing them to experience dental procedures without anxiety or fear.

EXPERT DENTAL TEAM

With decades of experience, the skilled staff, assistants and hygienists, trained in Dr. Gist’s protocols, are integral to the practice. Patients view this team as not just care providers, but personal friends, highlighting the strong relationships built.

TAMMY DOPORTO

Front Desk/ Hygiene Coordinator

Working with Dr. Gist and being a part of his dental team family has been such a blessing! Being able to work with the best cosmetic dentist and the most amazing restorative team to transform the lives of our patients is the best part of my job! When each of our patients smile, I know that we have connected with them in a meaningful way that changed their life!

JENNA GILLUND, RDH Registered Dental Hygienist I have learned so much aboveand-beyond my skillset as a hygienist working for Dr. Gist. He counts on me to provide his patients with the highest level of care, and in-turn I am excited to be a part of each of their restorative journey. Dr. Gist puts patients and dental team at the very core of his priorities and I am so grateful to have the opportunity to be part of it all. His practice is really like a family for all who visit here!

MONIQUE ROSE, RDA

I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn and work at one of the very few dental practices that performs high-end full mouth restorations. The undivided attention I’m able to give to each patient allows me the time needed to provide thorough hygiene care. Assisting Dr. Gist chairside, witnessing him give our patients back their confidence with a more youthful smile is the best part of my job!

(continued on the next page)

RACHAEL ZUNIGA, RDA

The very best part of my job is working as a team to turn a patient who was unhappy with their smile into one that can not stop smiling! Dr. Gist has built a strong, unified team that upholds his superior standards for dental care and we grow even stronger with continued education. To learn from his experience is something that we don’t take for granted. We all know we get to learn from the very best!

CLINICAL EXCELLENCE

A key element of Dr. Gist's approach to connecting with potential patients lies in showcasing stunning "AFTER" results. But let’s take a moment to explore the journey—where it all began and a few of the remarkable transformations that have unfolded once the cases were complete.

Schedule a complimentary consultation with Dr. Gist’s office today to discover if a transformation like this is possible for you!

YOUR DENTAL HOME

At Gist & Hayes Restorative / Cosmetic Dentistry, their team treats each and every patient like family—and it’s not unusual for couples to transform their smiles together. In fact, many of their past patients refer their own family member, their children and even their parents to the practice. This team doesn’t just focus on your teeth—they focus on you as a person, building relationships that go beyond appointments.

A dental practice can truly feel like family when the team creates a warm, welcoming environment where patients feel cared for and valued. When you open their door, you’re greeted with genuine kindness and compassion—making each visit feel like a pleasure rather than a chore. Dr. Gist’s team takes the time to build personal relationships—offering not just expert care, but also trust and comfort. It’s a special place where your concerns are truly heard, your needs are prioritized, and you leave feeling like you’re part of a supportive, extended family. This sense of connection fosters long-lasting relationships, turning routine dental visits into positive experiences. Relationship-driven, personalized, patient-first care creates an environment where patients feel at ease, knowing that their well-being is in the hands of people who truly care about their health and happiness. “

Caring for Your Smile is Caring for Your Health

Good oral health does more than just give you a bright smile—it can significantly improve your overall well-being. Maintaining healthy teeth and gums reduces the risk of serious health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and stroke, as poor oral hygiene has been linked to these issues. A healthy mouth allows for better nutrition, as you can chew and enjoy a wider variety of foods without discomfort. Additionally, oral health is closely tied to self-esteem and confidence—having a healthy, attractive smile can boost your social interactions and mental well-being. Ultimately, good oral hygiene not only keeps your mouth in top shape, but also contributes to a healthier, happier life.

Patients who choose this dental practice can count on a team committed to providing world-class care for those who seek the highest standards in dentistry. “My team will continue to be a blessing to every patient God brings us, offering exceptional cosmetic, restorative, sedation, and preventive dental treatments with a focus on excellence.”

LAUREN: ACTUAL PATIENT - BEFORE & AFTER

FOCUS ON QUALITY

This practice adheres to a "no insurance philosophy," choosing to prioritize quality care over the high volume of patients that insurance-driven practices may rely on. Dr. Gist and Dr. Hayes believe that insurance companies often make decisions that are more beneficial to the insurer than to the patient. By focusing on long-term value and clinical excellence, the practice ensures that every treatment is personalized and results in the best possible outcome for the patient.

Transforming Smiles, Restoring Health

For patients in need of extensive restorative work, such as dental implants or a full-mouth rehabilitation, Dr. Gist and Dr. Hayes are always available for a no-charge complimentary consultation. Whether it’s restoring years of damage from neglect or decay or revitalizing a smile through cosmetic procedures, their team takes a comprehensive approach to every case—ensuring that all restorative needs are met with precision and care.

“We’re honored to help our patients restore their smiles and their confidence,” says Dr. Hayes. “Every smile is unique, and we are committed to providing the highest level of care — whether it’s through restorative dentistry, cosmetic procedures, or preventive care.” — Cater Hayes DDS

If you’re looking for a dental practice where clinical excellence meets personalized care, this practice is ready to welcome you. The team invites you to schedule a complimentary consultation with Dr. Gist or Dr. Hayes, where you can take a tour of the office and discuss your individual dental needs. Dr. Gist’s practice is more than just a place to receive dental care—it’s a community where relationships are valued, comfort is prioritized, and world-class care is a guarantee. Whether you're new to the area or seeking a new dental home, this practice stands ready to serve you with the excellence and personal attention that have defined it for over 40 years.

A Guide to the Best Spots in Texas for WINTER CAMPING

As a frequent Texas traveler, I’ve had the pleasure of exploring the state’s diverse landscapes in every season—and winter camping in Texas is an experience like no other. Whether you’re a seasoned camper or new to the experience, Texas offers some of the best winter camping spots where you can escape the hustle and bustle, enjoy the crisp air, and explore stunning natural beauty.

In this guide, I’ll share my personal picks for the top winter camping destinations across the Lone Star State, each offering unique features and cozy experiences to make your winter adventure unforgettable. Texas boasts over 80 state parks, providing ample opportunities. Many parks offer tent and RV camping sites with varying amenities, including fire rings, picnic tables, restroom facilities, and access to hiking trails. Reservations are recommended, especially during peak seasons. Some parks offer cabins or shelters for a more comfortable stay in cooler weather. Here are some of the best Texas State Parks for winter camping—let’s dive in!

Guadalupe River State Park Located in the Hill Country, just a short drive from Austin and San Antonio, Guadalupe River State Park is a gem for winter campers. The park offers over 90 campsites, including tent and electric campsites, some with water and electricity. Winter activities include fishing, swimming, tubing, and stargazing. The park’s 4 miles of shoreline and 13 miles of hiking trails provide ample opportunities for winter hikes, while its abundance of bird species makes it a hotspot for nature lovers. Palo Duro Canyon State Park Palo Duro Canyon State Park, the “Grand Canyon of Texas,” offers stunning red rock formations and rugged terrain. Choose campsites with water, electricity and restrooms, or opt for remote backpack camping for more solitude. For a touch of luxury, stay in cabins on the canyon rim or rustic Cow Camp cabins on the canyon floor, complete with modern amenities. WINTER CAMPING IN TEXAS NATIONAL PARKS

Texas has two national parks that offer a more remote and unique camping experience in rugged campsites and diverse landscapes. The amenities here are limited compared to state parks or private campgrounds, providing opportunities for backcountry camping. Reservations are essential—especially for developed campgrounds within the parks. Each park has specific camping rules and regulations, so thorough research is crucial before planning a trip.

Big Bend National Park Big Bend National Park in West Texas offers a vast, remote winter camping experience amidst stunning mountain vistas and limestone canyons. Here, the night skies are dark as coal, making it an ideal spot for stargazing, and rivers carve temple-like canyons in ancient limestone. With three developed frontcountry campgrounds offering drinking water and restroom facilities, as well as full hookup RV camping and remote backcountry options, Big Bend caters to all camping styles. Cooler winter temperatures make it easy to explore its rugged terrain, tackle 150 miles of scenic trails, and soak in the indescribable views of the majestic Rio Grande. Big Bend’s diverse habitats, ranging from arid desert to towering mountains, support a thriving ecosystem. This includes over 450 bird species and a variety of wildlife, such as elusive black bears and majestic mountain lions.

SPEEDWAY CHILDREN'S CHARITIES IS DEDICATED TO HELPING IMPROVE THE LIVES OF CHILDREN ACROSS AMERICA. SCC IS MORE THAN JUST A FUNDRAISER. THEIR LOCAL CHAPTERS ARE PARTNERS IN CHANGE, WORKING WITH A BROAD RANGE OF PEOPLE AND ORGANIZATIONS TO IDENTIFY AND RESOLVE PRESSING ISSUES DEALING WITH CHILDREN IN THEIR COMMUNITIES.

FOUNDING HISTORY

Speedway Children's Charities was founded by O. Bruton Smith, Chairman of Speedway Motorsports Incorporated and Sonic Automotive Incorporated, as a memoriam and legacy to his son, Bruton Cameron Smith. After losing his young child, Smith became passionate about wanting to help children in need—and Speedway Children’s Charities was then created to focus on serving communities surrounding Speedway Motorsports race tracks. Speedway Children’s Charities chapters work with organizations to iden-

SPEEDWAYCHILDRENSCHARITIES

SCC is a non-profit 501c3 organization and provides funding for hundreds of non-profit organizations throughout the nation that meet the direct needs of children. Their vision is that every child has the same opportunities no matter what obstacle they are facing. Local chapters include: Texas, Atlanta, Bristol, Charlotte, COTA, Dove, Las Vegas, Nashville, New Hampshire, North Wilkesboro, and Sonoma. Because of the unique conditions in every community, the issues Speedway Children’s Charities address are determined locally.

tify and resolve pressing issues ranging from learning disabilities and broken homes to hunger and childhood cancer. Through 2021, Speedway Children’s Charities had distributed more than $61 million to local organizations across the country that improve the quality of life for children in need. “Our sole concern at SCC is to help a child in need,” admits Smith. SCC grew into a national effort in 1982, expanding to eight chapters nationwide. Through the years, SCC has funded thousands of organizations and impacted the lives of millions of children across The United States of America.

In 2024 alone, the Speedway Children’s Charities distributed approximately $4 million in grants to charitable organizations across the country, bringing the total funds distributed since 1982 to more than $72 million, and ensuring that many children in need are given the tools to build a better, brighter and healthy future. SCC chapters hold events that raise funds to help address the medical, educational, and social needs of children. These events include on-track activities, live auctions, clay shoots, galas, 5K runs, golf tournaments, and many other fundraising opportunities. Monies raised are

distributed to local non-profit organizations through grants at the end of the calendar year. Each chapter holds a special distribution ceremony to recognize the organizations receiving the grants.

SCC TEXAS GRANT PROGRAM

Speedway Children's Charities is dedicated to helping the next generation exceed expectations and ensuring every child has the same opportunities, no matter the obstacles they face. This organization is dedicated to caring for children to help them lead productive lives. Through their various events and activities, they strive to raise funds and provide grants to nonprofit children’s organizations in the North Texas community. In 2023, SCC Texas distributed over $210,000 to local organizations serving kids in need!

You are eligible to apply for funding from the Texas Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities if you are an existing 501c3 nonprofit charity whose primary focus is children in the Collin, Dallas, Denton, and Tarrant Counties. Priority consideration will be given to organizations helping the homeless, orphan and foster population, as well as victims of human trafficking. Below are the pillars the SCC will focus on during the grant process:

• Victims of Human Trafficking

• Homelessness

• Critical Needs - Food, Clothing, Shelter

• Medical Needs

• Educational Needs

All applications will receive consideration, and all eligible organizations are encouraged to apply. SCC does not fund capital projects or funding for operation costs or salaries. The grant application is available on their website. Here is the 2025 Grant Cycle:

FEBRUARY - MAY: The 2025 SCC Texas Grant Application period will open in February 2025 and close May 31st at midnight. Eligible organizations must complete an online application to be considered for a SCC Texas grant. Organizations whose applications are accepted will be contacted and asked to submit additional information for the second-round review. Only organizations that complete both phases of the application process on time will be considered for funding. If you miss a deadline, we will be unable to accept your application.

JUNE - AUGUST: The initial process for the 2025 grant cycle has ended. Applications selected for the second-round review will be notified by the End of August. Only organizations that complete both phases of the application process will be considered for funding. Once your organization is accepted into round 2, SCC will request specific detailed documentation on your organization. You will have one week to submit further documentation. An organization must submit its paperwork on time to progress in the grant process.

SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER: If your organization is selected to move forward into round 2 and all required documentation is submitted on time, an SCC Trustee will visit your nonprofit in person to conduct a site visit and thorough interview of your organization.

NOVEMBER: By the end of November, each approved organization will be contacted with an invite to the Annual Tree Lighting and Grant Ceremony at Texas Motor Speedway. Each approved organization is required to attend the celebration to receive funding, with a minimum of one representative from your organization.

If you have any questions regarding the SCC grant cycle, please email Marissa Chaney at mchaney@texasmotorspeedway.com

VOLUNTEERING

While it is not mandated that every grant applicant volunteer for a Speedway Children’s Charities event, it is highly encouraged. The Board of Trustees feels it is essential for the grant partners to support their mission by volunteering with SCC during the calendar year they apply for, and will award bonus points on applications for volunteer service. Speedway Children's Charities loves to support our community and looks forward to reviewing the excellent work you all are doing to help our North Texas kids in need!

Chocolate Peppermint Whoopie Pies

I’m absolutely terrible at making these perfectly round. You could pipe them to get perfect rounds, but honestly who has the time? They taste spectacular either way! ..................................................................................................

INGREDIENTS (about 2 dozen)

1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour

2/3 cup dark cocoa powder

1 1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

4 Tbsp (half stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature

4 Tbsp vegetable shortening

1 cup packed dark brown sugar

1 large egg

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 1/4 cup milk

Peppermint Buttercream, recipe follows

Optional: 6-8 candy canes, crushed

(1) Preheat oven to 375 and line baking sheets with parchment paper.

..................................................................................................

(2) Whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt in a small bowl.

..................................................................................................

(3) In a stand mixer, beat butter, shortening, and brown sugar on low speed until combined. Increase speed to medium and beat until fluffy. Scrape down the sides and beat in the egg and vanilla.

(4) Add half the cocoa mixture and half the milk to the batter and mix on low until incorporated. Scrape down the sides, then add the remaining cocoa mixture and milk.

..................................................................................................

(5) Drop a tablespoon of batter onto cooking sheets, spacing them 2″ apart. Make sure you have an even number! Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the tops gently spring back when touched. Cool for five minutes on the sheet, then transfer to a cooling rack.

(6) When completely cool, spread the underside with Peppermint Buttercream, then top with a second piece to create a Whoopie Pie. Roll the edges in crushed candy cane. Repeat until all are sandwiched.

..................................................................................................

Candy Cane Brownies

Chocolate lovers, rejoice! This is the Christmas brownie for you. Rich and dense and full of candy cane goodness — Santa will love seeing my Candy Cane Brownies by the tree!

INGREDIENTS

FOR THE BROWNIES:

3/4 cup butter, melted

1 1/2 cups sugar

1/2 tsp salt

3/4 cup dark cocoa powder

(I use Hershey’s Special Dark)

3 large eggs

3/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 tsp baking powder

1/8 teaspoon peppermint extract ......................................................................................

(1) Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease the bottom of a 9×13 pan, line with parchment paper, and grease the paper.

(2) In a large bowl with a wooden spoon, mix the melted butter, sugar, and salt. Add the cocoa powder and stir well to incorporate. Add the eggs one at a time, beating after each addition. Stir in the flour and baking powder. Add peppermint extract.

......................................................................................

(3) Pour into prepared pan. Bake for about 20 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Let cool completely in the pan.

(4) Frost with frosting. Drizzle with chocolate. Cut into squares and enjoy!

FOR THE CANDY CANE FROSTING:

3 cups confectioners’ sugar

6 tablespoons melted butter

3 tablespoons milk

1/8 teaspoon peppermint extract

4 candy canes, crushed in a food processor ......................................................................................

(1) To make the candy cane frosting, stir together the sugar, melted butter, peppermint oil, and milk. Add a drop of two of peppermint extract. Stir in crushed candy canes. Ooh-and-ahh as the frosting turns a beautiful pink color! I reserve a few large chunks to sprinkle on top.

FOR THE CHOCOLATE DRIZZLE:

1/3 cup semisweet chocolate chips or chopped bittersweet chocolate

2 Tbsp heavy whipping cream

(1) Combine the chocolate and cream in a microwave-safe bowl and heat on medium until the cream is very hot and starting to form bubbles. Remove from the microwave, and stir until the chocolate is melted.

Chocolate Peppermint Pie

thoroughly chill this pie. Either make it in the morning or the day before you want to serve it. It needs time to set in the fridge. I can’t even stress how obsessed with this pie I am. If you’re looking for a new favorite holiday dessert, you’ve found it! I ate two slices yesterday! I can’t be trusted around this perfect pie!

SL CandyCANE

INGREDIENTS FOR THE COOKIE CRUST: 24 Oreos

1/4 cup butter, melted

INGREDIENTS FOR THE FILLING: 1/3 cup cornstarch

2 Tbsp Hershey’s Special Dark cocoa powder

1/4 tsp salt

1/2 cup heavy cream

2 and 1/2 cups milk

1 cup granulated sugar

8 oz semi-sweet chocolate, chopped

2 Tbsp unsalted cold butter, cut into small pieces

3/4 tsp peppermint extract

INGREDIENTS FOR THE TOPPING:

1/2 cup heavy whipping cream

2 Tbsp powdered sugar

1/2 tsp vanilla extract

2 candy canes, crushed

(1) First, make the crust. Pulverize Oreo cookies in a food processor until fine. Stream in melted butter and pulverize until the consistency of wet sand. Spoon crust into a greased 9″ pie plate, working crumbs all the way up the sides of the pie plate. Pop in the freezer while you make the filling. It should freeze for at least 30 minutes.

(2) Whisk together cornstarch, cocoa powder, and salt in a small bowl. Stream in heavy cream and whisk until well combined. Set aside.

(3) In a sauce pan, combine milk, sugar, and chopped chocolate. Cook over medium heat until chocolate is melted and the ingredients are well combined.

.........................................................................................

(4) Take one cup of the chocolate-milk mixture and pour it into the cocoa-cream mixture, whisking as you pour. Once combined, pour this mixture back into the sauce pan and stir it all together.

.........................................................................................

(5) Return saucepan to heat and cook over medium heat for a few more minutes, until the mixture thickens considerably and thickly coats the back of a spoon. Remove from heat and whisk in cold butter and peppermint extract.

(6) Pour pie filling into prepared crust. Cover with plastic wrap, pressing the plastic wrap directly on the surface of the pie. Refrigerate for six hours or overnight to set.

.........................................................................................

(7) To make the whipped cream, beat heavy whipping cream with a metal whisk in a metal bowl until thickened. Beat in powdered sugar and vanilla. Pipe whipped cream on top of pie and top with crushed candy canes.

Peppermint Marshmallow Pops

I used my homemade marshmallows for this recipe but you could use store bought marshmallows. When I was cutting my marshmallow slab into cubes, I left what would have been 8 marshmallows as 4 long marshmallow sticks. If you’re using store bought marshmallows, stack a few on a stick. You could use popsicle sticks, but I used Christmas straws to be festive. I wasn’t sure they would be sturdy enough (they’re paper straws), but they totally worked and never bent. First I crushed candy canes, then inserted straws into marshmallows, then I melted the chocolate. Do not skip the shortening in the chocolate. Look at how glossy and luscious it is! I used baking chocolate instead of chocolate chips. If you’re reading this thinking, Oh no! I only have chocolate chips! Keep reading because that will still work, but next time, use baking chocolate. It melts so much nicer than chocolate chips. Spoon a dollop of chocolate on the marshmallow then use the back of the spoon to smooth it across. You want a pretty thin layer of chocolate here. Dark chocolate + vanilla marshmallows + peppermint coating = Christmas perfection.

INGREDIENTS

6 large leftover homemade marshmallows (my recipe available at therosetable.com)

6 popsicle sticks

4 oz semi-sweet Ghirardelli baking chocolate

2 tsp shortening

8 candy canes

(1) Unwrap candy canes and place in a freezer bag. Use a rolling pin to crush the candy canes into small pieces. Transfer crushed candy canes to a plate.

(2) Insert popsicle sticks into marshmallows. You want to go pretty much to the end so they’re as sturdy as possible.

(3) Set a piece of wax paper on the counter large enough to hold all your pops.

(4) Finely chop baking chocolate and place in a heatproof bowl with 2 tsp shortening. Microwave at half power for about 2 minutes, stirring every 15-30 seconds until smooth and glossy.

(5) Pick up a marshmallow pop, hold over the bowl of chocolate, and spoon chocolate on the marshmallow, using the back of the spoon to smooth over each side, gently tapping the excess chocolate off as you go.

............................................................................................................

(6) Sprinkle candy cane pieces all over the chocolate. You want it pretty thoroughly coated in peppermint. Set on wax paper and repeat with remaining pops. Slide a small cookie sheet under the pops and pop in the fridge for ten minutes to set. Store at room temperature in a Ziplock bag.

Chocolate Peppermint Pretzels

INGREDIENTS

50 small pretzels

8 oz semi-sweet Ghirardelli chocolate

sticky and, I gotta say, it’s going to be hard to go back. This is a great recipe for little chefs to help dipping and sprinkling! They keep well in the fridge for about a week without losing any crunch at all.

1 cup crushed peppermint

SL CandyCANE

(1) Chop chocolate into small pieces and set in a heatproof bowl or cup. Melt at half power for about 2 minutes, stirring every 15 seconds or so. Do not overheat.

............................................................................................................

(2) Dip each pretzel one at a time in the melted chocolate and set on parchment-lined sheet. Stop every five or six pretzels and sprinkle with crushed peppermint.

(3) Pop in the fridge for twenty minutes to set and enjoy! Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge.

‘Tis the season of comfort food. With the official arrival of wintery weather, salads and smoothies and bikinis are a distant memory. It’s time for food that fills your belly and warms your soul. I can’t think of a better place for comfort food than Horizon 76 American Grill House in Keller. With a cozy rustic and relaxed vibe, Horizon 76 is perfect for a casual date night, meeting up with friends or a dinner out with the family.

Their menu features thoughtfully crafted American classics that bring comfort to every bite. The highlights include Fried Chicken Pot Pie, Prime Angus Pot Roast and the Tenderloin Chili. One of the standout items is the Horizon 76 Signature Burger—

a juicy creation topped with premium cheese, crisp bacon and a housemade sauce that adds a tangy kick. For steak lovers, the ’76 Filet, topped with your choice of Texas Chili Butter or Garlic Butter, is a must-try. For a definite one-of-a-kind find, try the Chicken Fried Filet, topped with a classic peppered country cream gravy. Both come with your choice of sides, but I highly recommend the House-Made Mac and Cheese and Crispy Duck Fries.

Seafood enthusiasts will appreciate dishes like the TX Chili Buttered Shrimp or the Mesquite Grilled Salmon and Shrimp. Vegetarian options are also thoughtfully crafted, including the Fried Green Tomatoes and Traditional Cheese Enchiladas from the Tex Mex side of the menu. In addition to its regular offerings, Horizon 76 boasts a rotating selection of daily specials, ensuring that there’s always something new to try. What I love most about Horizon 76 is that the menu strikes the perfect balance—offering something for everyone in the family while staying focused on delivering exceptional quality in every dish—and portions are generous.

No visit is complete without exploring their extensive beverage menu with an impressive lineup of craft beers, fine wines and signature cocktails. Favorites

include the H76 Old Fashioned, made with Austin’s Nine-Banded Bourbon, and the Cosmic Keller—a vibrant blend of Blackland Vodka, lemon and cranberry juice, plus Blue Curacao My not-to-be-missed cocktail is the Old Glory. It’s a mix of Texas’ piney woods Western Son Blueberry Vodka, Pinot Noir, fresh lemons and blueberries. It’s subtly sweet with the Pinot Noir adding rich depth to the flavor profile. Horizon 76 offers daily drink specials that are definitely worth mentioning. On Mondays, Margaritas are half off. On Tuesdays, it’s half off all draft beer. For Wednesday, wine by the glass is half off and on Thursdays: Firecracker,

Old Glory and Cosmic Keller cocktails are all half off. Adding to the vibrant atmosphere, Horizon 76 has a lively patio scene—even in our cooler months. Complete with space heaters and a fire pit, you’re sure to stay toasty while also partaking in a game of Cornhole or Giant Connect Four. It’s the perfect spot to bring the fam—especially on Sundays when kids eat free! Horizon 76 truly embodies the heart of Texas dining, offering a diverse menu, a warm and inviting ambiance, and authentic Southern hospitality. Whether you’re a lifelong Texan or you’re just passin’ through, Horizon 76 promises an experience that won’t disappoint.
