the language of love

“Love is not only something you feel, it is something you do.”

February, often referred to as the month of love, is a time to honor romance, friendship, and the many ways we express care and affection. It’s a season of warmth in the midst of winter, reminding us that love has the power to uplift, heal, and connect us in ways both big and small.

Welcome to ‘The Love Issue,’ where we celebrate love in its many forms—romantic love, family bonds, community kindness, and the divine love that guides us all. Through every story, feature, and insight in these pages, we explore how love shapes our relationships, strengthens our communities, and brings meaning to our lives. Love is at the heart of everything we do, and this issue is a true reflection of that. From expert perspectives to stories of devotion and connection, we invite you to immerse yourself in a celebration of love’s enduring power. Whether through the laughter of a child, the embrace of a partner, our generosity to those in need or the kindness of a stranger, love is all around us—waiting to be recognized, shared and cherished.

Gracing our cover is Dr. Jeff Nuziard, PhD, CEO of Sexual Wellness Centers, whose groundbreaking work has helped countless couples restore marriages and revive intimacy. With a patented cure for sexual dysfunction for men and women, his expert team is changing lives, renewing confidence, and strengthening relationships one patient at a time—all without pills or surgery (page 22). Inside, we also feature our quarterly ‘Society Kids’ section, highlighting The Love of Learning Private School listings for families seeking the best local educational opportunities for their children (page 44). And because love is best shared around the table and found in the warmth of a home-cooked meal, our Ladle Love feature brings you a collection of soul-soothing soup recipes—perfect for sipping, slurping, and savoring in this season of love.

Through every page, we celebrate the many dimensions of love—a mother’s love in Momilies on page 52 and our Greater Good feature about the GCS Moms League The Great Gala “The Queen’s Ball” on page 56, a father’s love in FatherHood on page 62, the love we share with our community in the countless events benefiting local nonprofits, and above all, the unwavering love that God has for us in our FaithFull column on page 10. This issue is a tribute to the most powerful force in our lives. May these articles and stories inspire you to cherish and celebrate love every day. Wishing you love, joy, and inspiration on every page and in every day.

STRENGTHEN YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD AND LIVE A FULFILLING, FAITHFUL CHRISTIAN LIFE

The Bible has a lot to say about love. The word “love” is mentioned over 500 times in the Bible, with many verses that speak to love’s power, importance, and beauty.

The Bible says that God is love, which makes the Word of God the perfect source to know what true love means and how we can love others as God loves us. Bible verses about love reveal that our world has skewed the meaning of real love, but God’s Word remains the steadfast source of divine knowledge and wisdom. We have gathered a compilation of Bible verses about love for marriage, among friends, and even loving your neighbors and enemies. Read and meditate on this list of scriptures about love from the Holy Bible and begin seeing the change in your heart and mind that comes from pursuing selfless love! Here are some of the most inspiring and beautiful Bible verses about love:

1 Corinthians 16:14:

Let all that you do be done in love.

....................................................................

1 Corinthians 13:4-7:

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Colossians 3:14:

And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

1 Corinthians 13:13:

So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

John 15:13:

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

John 3:16:

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

1 Peter 4:8:

Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.

Ephesians 5:25:

Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,

Ephesians 4:2:

With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,

.................................................................... ....................................................................

1 John 4:7-8:

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.

....................................................................

Now, if we want the perfect example of love, it is in our creator God. Often, God’s love is referred to as agape love which is the highest form of love that is selfless and sacrificial. It is steadfast, unchanging, and unconditional. Below are a few Scripture examples of God’s great love for you! May these Bible verses about the love of God inspire courage and compassion.

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. - 1 John 4:7-8

This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. - John 4:9-12

And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. - 1 John 4:16-18

And you can always remember that “We love because he first loved us.” –1 John 4:19

The Other Side of Illness

Unexpected Blessings

As the collector and editor for The Other Side of Illness: Unexpected Blessings, Dr. Robin Hall has compiled stories from all kinds of people who faced all kinds of difficult illnesses and traumas. In this book, you find very personal stories of nurses, doctors, retirees, massage therapists, members of the military, philanthropists, and more. Each of these people shared with Dr. Hall their story of disaster, recovery and learning to look on the bright side. Each person has developed the strength required to find something positive in the tragedies that changed their lives. The stories are told in a very approachable way. You will likely find experiences you can relate to—very much like your own or a member of your family.

The book is divided into two sections: ‘Why Me?’ and ‘Why Us?’ Dr. Hall describes the first section as stories about individuals and their journeys, and the second section as stories about adversity that have impacted a person and/or their loved ones. Each chapter begins with a quote or a scripture passage that applies to the difficulty faced. Some of those who dealt with these struggles share passages from the Bible that helped or encouraged them. It would not be surprising if some of them changed their names because of the multiple tragedies they had to overcome.

The occasional cartoon also shows up, which brings a bit of much needed comic relief. Don’s Story, titled “A Change of Heart,” begins with a quote from Buddha that sums up the book’s nature: “Every experience, no matter how bad it seems, holds within it a blessing of some kind. The goal is to find it.” Dr. Hall begins the book with the story of her infertility journey and how it resulted in the adoption of a precious daughter. Another story tells the tale of Danny, who suffered from Alport Syndrome, a genetic disorder that causes kidney failure. Six people volunteered to donate a kidney, but were not matches. Because of an event he attended with the young man who became his donor, Danny met the love of his life, had a successful transplant, and built a loving family.

The final story in the book is about the experiences of Dr. Diana Driscoll. She and her children were diagnosed with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome or POTS, a disorder of the nervous system. Unable to find answers or treatment to help, she did her own scientific research, finally developing a medication and sharing it with others who find themselves with this same diagnosis. While the stories in this book deal with a variety of difficulties, the final feeling is one of hope and encouragement. It reminds us that we are not alone in the challenges we face.

Profound exploration of the human spirit’s capacity to find blessings in the face of life’s challenges
Filled

with intriguing stories of people who have experienced life-altering diagnoses, this book demonstrates that every health adversity can result in remarkable and beneficial life changes.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Dr. Robin Hall is a board certified family physician, entrepreneur, speaker and medical educator with over 32 years of clinical experience. She’s won numerous accolades and awards as an outstanding doctor in her local community and in Texas. She founded Destination Health, one of the first concierge practices in the country. Both Dr. Hall and her husband are cancer survivors. Due to her own experience, and by caring for thousands of patients, she has witnessed that illness of all types can be a blessing in disguise. In this book, she shares inspiring stories of others who have also come to realize this. Dr. Hall resides in Texas with her husband and two maltipoos, and enjoys traveling, reading, speaking, and spending time with family and friends.

BOBBYFEST BENEFITING AMY'S WISH WITH WINGS 12TH ANNUAL FESTIVAL WITH LIVE MUSIC & FOOD TRUCKS

Bobbyfest started out 16 years ago as a backyard music festival hosted by Bobby and Lisa Rawls. In its third year, Bobby decided to leverage the event to raise money for charity. For the past five years, Bobbyfest has served as a charity event honoring Amy’s Wish With Wings—an equine therapy center for children with special needs. Bobbyfest attendees enjoy live music, local vendors, auctions, and much more! Amy’s Wish With Wings was founded in 2011 by Doreen Bruton. Amy Stefanko began therapeutic horseback riding with Doreen after suffering complications from Leukemia, which forced her to learn to speak and walk again. Amy’s wish was to be able to ride independent of a lead line with side walkers. Under Doreen’s care and instruction, Amy achieved her wish and continues to flourish today in the program held at Ride with Pride Horsemanship School in Southlake, Texas. Bobbyfest will feature these bands offering live entertainment: Brave Combo, Lyndsey Kate, The Big D Band TX, ZK “The Singer,” Brett Watts and America Allen. There will also be food trucks to get your grub on! Food trucks scheduled to date are: 1956 Pizza and Taste of Louisiana. The 12th Annual Bobbyfest will continue to benefit Amy’s Wish With Wings with its proceeds. Join us on Saturday, April 5, 2025 from 3-9pm at The Marq Southlake located at 285 Shady Oaks Drive in Southlake 76092. Families are invited to bring your chairs or blankets, and enjoy some live music, food trucks, silent auction and much more. Tickets are general admission and non-refundable. Kids under 3 are free. Shakespeare Dallas is delighted to announce the 2025 Shakespeare in the Park season. The 2025 Season includes:

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST directed by Jenni Stewart. This witty romantic comedy by Oscar Wilde, first performed in 1895, tells the story of two men who assume the identities of a fictional man named Ernest. .................................................................................................................................

OTHELLO directed by Montgomery Sutton. In this Shakespearean tragedy, Othello is at the peak of his powers—not only Venice's greatest general, but also husband to the noble and beautiful Desdemona. But he does not know that in passing over his servant Iago for promotion, he has created a deadly-but brilliant- enemy. This production will get a modern twist: this production will be set in an alternate history version of the 1990s in which the Venetian empire is the predominant political, military and economic power. Othello opens June 20, 2025.

THE TAMING OF THE SHREW directed by Ryan Matthieu Smith. In this beloved romantic comedy that has inspired so many other works, Lucentio loves Bianca, but is unable to court her until her older sister Katherina marries. Hilarity ensues as the eccentric Petruccio marries the reluctant Katherina and uses a number of tactics to charm her. Lucentio marries Bianca and, in a contest at the end, Katherina proves to be an incredible wife. This production of the beloved Shakespeare classic will be set in the Wild West. The Taming of the Shrew opens September 19, 2025.

.................................................................................................................................

The Importance of Being Earnest and Othello will run concurrently June 13 through July 20, 2025 as part of the 53rd Shakespeare in the Park summer festival. BUTTERFLIES IN THE GARDEN BREATHTAKING BEAUTY AT FORT WORTH BOTANIC GARDEN MARCH 1 TO APRIL 30

Experience the breathtaking beauty of Butterflies in the Garden at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden, March 1 through April 30, 2025. Presented by Central Market, this eagerly awaited exhibit features thousands of exotic and native butterflies, fluttering gracefully among lush greenery and vibrant tropical blooms within the FWBG’s Rainforest Conservatory. From the delicate transparency of the Glass Wing (Greta oto) to the vivid splendor of the Blue Morpho (Morpho peleides), visitors will marvel at a stunning variety of butterfly species hailing from Central and South America, Africa, Asia, and even local regions. During the event, esteemed lepidopterist Dr. Lucy Milas will oversee the emergence and health of the butterflies, along with managing their daily releases into the conservatory.

WHY BUTTERFLIES ARE ESSENTIAL | Butterflies are more than just beautiful creatures—they are vital to the very balance of life on Earth. As they move from flower to flower, they transfer pollen, enabling cross-pollination that supports plant reproduction and biodiversity. This process is critical, as 80% of land plants depend on insects and animals for pollination, directly influencing ecosystems and global food supplies. Insects are essential to ecosystems. They pollinate plants and provide food for birds, bats, amphibians, reptiles, and even other insects that depend on them for sustenance. Protecting insects means supporting our food systems, economies, and the natural world. By taking care of them, we take care of ourselves.

“Access to experiences like Butterflies in the Garden provides a refreshing escape from the fast-paced digital world, allowing people to reconnect with the natural rhythms of life,” says Managing H-E-B Director of Public Affairs, Mabrie Jackson. “They also serve as powerful educational tools, fostering an appreciation for biodiversity and sustainability. When communities engage with nature in meaningful ways, they cultivate a shared commitment to preserving it, ensuring that future generations enjoy and benefit from the same beauty and resources.” Butterflies in the Garden offers a unique chance to immerse yourself in a stunning and educational experience. Timed-entry tickets are available online at: fwbg.org

SOLUTIONS FAQ SEXUAL

Q: Sexual dysfunction is so personal, I’m hesitant to talk about it. Discretion, integrity, dignity and professionalism is at the core of our practice model. I personally founded Sexual Welless Centers after my own experience with ED. I woke up as a healthy 40year-old man who could not perform. I shared the feelings of hopelessness, shame and worthlessness. I refused to accept this was how it was going to be for the rest of my life. I started a personal quest— not just for some answers, but for a cure. This journey led me to develop the REGENmax Protocol we use at the Center. I know it can be difficult, but seeking ED treatment not only addresses physical aspects, but also contributes to your overall emotional and relational well-being, thus promoting a more fulfilling and satisfying lifestyle. It will be life-changing.

Q: Why should I choose SWC over other options? Over the last 19 years and a significant investment in both scientific and clinical studies, a team of SWC MDs and PhDs diligently researched and optimized our REGENmax protocol. After successfully treating countless patients, SWC conducted a formal clinical study of over 250 patients using our REGENmax protocol. Results showed that almost 97.2% had reversed their ED after a one-year follow-up—an astounding success rate. Sexual Wellness Centers holds the world’s first Erectile Dysfunction global trademark patent for its REGENmax Protocol.

Q: I don’t want another medication, how is this different? It is important to understand that this is not a pill. It’s not a temporary fix. It is a painless and patent protected procedure with a 97.2% success rate and quick results. Specifically, it’s a breakthrough treatment protocol called REGENmax, designed to fully reverse erectile dysfunction. This revolutionary approach isn’t just a treatment—it’s a cure for ED.

Q: What can I expect? A physical exam and a blood analysis will be performed during your consultation to determine what may be the underlying cause of your sexual issues. A treatment plan will be tailored to meet your unique needs. We understand that what works for one person may not work for another, which is why we offer multiple treatment options.

Q: Are your services just for men? No,we treat both men and women. Whether you are seeking to boost your libido due to childbirth, aging, or any other reason that lowered your confidence or your performance, we offer women a variety of innovative treatments. THE DFW DENTAL IMPLANT CENTER

Q&A

All-on-4® Concept

A smile is more than just a set of teeth — it’s confidence, joy, and the ability to enjoy life without hesitation. Yet, for millions suffering from tooth loss, smiling can feel like a distant dream.

Enter Dr. Steven Branberg and the revolutionary All-on-4® dental implant treatment. With a passion for transforming lives, DFW Dental Implant Center offer a life-changing solution that restores not only smiles, but self-assurance and quality of life.

If you or someone you love is ready to ditch the discomfort of dentures and regain the freedom to eat, speak, and laugh without worry, read on to discover how All-on-4® can be your ultimate dental breakthrough.

Q: What is the All-on-4 dental implant treatment?

DR.BRANBERG: Imagine walking into our office with missing or failing teeth and leaving the same day with a brand-new smile! That’s the magic of All-on-4. This innovative procedure secures a full-arch of teeth onto just four implants—providing an immediate, stable, and natural-looking solution. After a few months of healing, we will replace your temporary bridge with a permanent, custom-designed set of teeth that feel just like the real thing.

(continued on next page)

DoctorIsIn SL

Q: Why is this treatment so popular?

DR.BRANBERG: Millions of people worldwide struggle with tooth loss due to gum disease, cavities, or even medications that can cause dry mouth. Traditional implants often require bone grafting and multiple procedures, making them costly and timeconsuming. But, the All-on-4 treatment solves these problems by eliminating the need for bone grafts and using just four implants for a full-arch restoration. It’s faster, more affordable, and gives people their confidence back almost instantly.

Q: What makes All-on-4 stand out from traditional dentures?

DR.BRANBERG: Here are some of the All-on-4 highlights.

• Permanent & Secure – No more slipping or discomfort—these teeth stay put

• Immediate Results – Walk out the same day with a full, functional smile

• Eat What You Love – Enjoy all of your favorite foods again—from crunchy apples to juicy steaks

• Preserves Facial Structure – Prevents bone loss and the ‘sunken’ look often seen with missing teeth

• Minimal Downtime – Less recovery time compared to other implant procedures

• No Adhesives or Special Cleaning – Care for and brush them just like natural teeth

Q: Am I a good candidate for All-on-4?

DR. BRANBERG: If you’re struggling with uncomfortable dentures or failing teeth and want a long-term fix, All-on-4 could be your perfect choice. Many patients say it’s life changing—they smile more, eat better, and feel more confident in social settings. It’s also a great option for those with low bone density, as it avoids a need for bone grafting.

Q: What does All-on-4 process look like?

DR.BRANBERG: Here are the steps to consider in the All-on-4 treatment process:

1) Free Consultation – We evaluate your dental health, discuss your goals, and create a customized treatment plan

2) Advanced Diagnostics – A 3D scan helps us map out your perfect smile

3) Surgery Day – Implants are placed, you leave with a new set of temporary teeth

4) Healing & Checkups – We monitor your progress as your implants integrate with your jawbone

5) Final Restoration – After a few months, we place your permanent, beautifully designed teeth

Q: What makes the DFW Dental Implant Center different?

DR.BRANBERG: Unlike many dental offices, we handle everything in one location with a specialized team. Our approach is built on three key pillars:

• One Team – Expert team includes a Prosthodontist, anesthesiologist and lab technician working together under one roof.

• One Cost – No hidden fees. Your treatment includes everything from the consultation to final teeth.

• One Location – No need to travel to multiple specialists. Everything happens in our Colleyville office.

Q: How much does All-on-4 concept cost?

DR. BRANBERG: We believe in transparent pricing with no surprises. Our cost includes:

• Free consultation & 3D scan

• Implants, extractions, grafting (if needed), and sedation

• Temporary & permanent teeth

• Follow-up visits

We also offer flexible financing options like CareCredit and accept PPO insurance plans.

Q: What’s the next step?

DR. BRANBERG: The first step is easy— schedule your free consultation! Let’s see if the All-on-4 Dental Implant treatment is right for you. Join hundreds of thousands of All-on-4 patients. Your confident, radiant smile is just one appointment away! See our ad on opposite page for contact info.

In 2021, a surge in suicide attempts among children and teens was a call to action for Cook Children’s Health Care System. And then in March of that year, a record 43 patients were admitted to the Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth after they attempted suicide. This staggering figure was nearly double the number of suicidal patients that had been seen previously. Even worse, kids were dying. In 2020, Cook Children’s recorded seven suicide deaths, marking the first time suicide was the leading cause of trauma deaths at the hospital—surpassing child abuse and car wrecks. Joy Campaign was born.

RAISING

JOY

“We started the journey back in 2021, when we were seeing the devastating increases in kids and teens trying to take their own lives,” said Wini King, co-host, executive producer, and Chief of Communications and Employee Connections at Cook Children’s. The Joy Campaign was launched as a suicide prevention communication initiative. Joy, an acronym, reminds us all to ‘Just Breathe,’ ‘Open Up,’ and ‘You Matter.’

Podcast Hits Milestone and Empowers Families through Mental Health Conversations

SK HealthyKids

After a year of articles, media interviews, and speaker requests from the public, the Joy Campaign grew into the Raising Joy podcast. February 11 marked the 100th episode.

Hosted by Wini King and Kristen Pyrc, MD, medical director of outpatient psychiatry at Cook Children’s. The podcast tackles tough topics like depression, anxiety, stress, bullying, and social media (pictured).

Dr. Pyrc recalls treating patients as young as six and seven years old for suicide attempts. Anecdotal stories like this one are backed up by data collected through the Cook Children’s Emergency Department (ED). In 2022, more than 30,000 patients in the ED, aged 8 and up, were screened using the Ask Suicide Questions (ASQ) tool. The results were alarming. Six hundred and forty kids screened positive for suicide risk and a crisis contact information sheet was provided to more than 2,000 families. Dr. Pyrc and King recall seeing the shocking data. “It was right here in our very backyard—in front of our very eyes,” admits King. “It was a lot.”

Hard Conversations

Three years later, the Raising Joy podcast has listeners in 60 countries and more than 23,000 downloads.

King and Dr. Pyrc interview families and medical professionals who share their personal experiences. They both say those personal stories have been the most impactful.“ We have had a lot of people who lost babies, who are taking care of catastrophically ill babies, but still manage to smile, encourage and inspire,” King explained. Dr. Pyrc adds some of her favorite episodes have been speaking to teens, and hearing their insights. While the goal is to make a difference in the community, Dr. Pyrc shared that these conversations have also impacted her parenting.

One of her most memorable guests was Brad Hunstable, a Fort Worth father who lost his son Hayden to suicide just four days shy of his 13th birthday. Hunstable was one of the first people to open up and share his

story for the Joy Campaign. He later appeared as a guest on Raising Joy. “That was very impactful for me, and it changed more how I parent than how I practice being a psychiatrist,” explained Dr. Pyrc. She shared how this episode impacted her conversations with her kids, especially when they are sad or seem down. Dr. Pyrc emphasized the importance of open communication and nonjudgmental responses to children’s questions. “I do not want a child ever to think that there is anything that they can do or say, that would justify them having to think, ‘I need to because my mom or dad are disappointed,’” King said.

While the conversation around mental health has increased since 2021, the need for resources continues to rise. In 2023, Cook Children’s screened more than 32,000 patients in the ED with the ASQ tool. Of those, 713 screened positive for suicide risk and a crisis contact information sheet was provided for 2,221 kids struggling with sadness and worry. Twenty-four children were suicidal, but were visiting the ED for a different medical complaint. While 2024 data is still being compiled, Dr. Pyrc and King continue to focus on informing and educating the public about mental health. King hopes that parents can relate and find solace in their own experiences by hearing from others.

“Hearing the incredible life experiences of others helps you understand your own circumstances are not impossible,” King said. Raising Joy has inspired many parents and families across the world to be more open about their mental health needs and how to seek guidance. You can listen to the amazing guests and their stories on Apple Podcast or Spotify.

Raising Joy is part of Cook Children’s Health Care System’s Joy Campaign, a communications initiative aimed at preventing youth suicides. For more information about the Joy Campaign, please visit: cookchildrens.org/joy

New episodes of the Raising Joy podcast will be available each Tuesday. It is currently available on all major streaming platforms including Apple and Spotify.

I said so

SOCIETY LIFE: What’s one of your earliest memories you have of your Mom? COREY INSALACO: My mom would always roll my hair in sponge-rollers the night before Christmas or Easter church service. I remember those bright pink rollers and the time she spent making sure they were aligned and all. My hair is naturally very straight, like my mother’s, and I believe she was either afraid to use the curling iron on my hair morningof, or like most of us moms… she was just trying to save some time in the rush the next morning.

SL: What is something you thought about Motherhood that was totally wrong? CI: I know one initial thought I had was that you had to surrender most of your dreams and/or personal aspirations to become a mother. That was a thought I had prematurely because I didn’t know many women my age at the time (mid-30s) who were becoming mothers for the first time. Most of my friends had children that were in middle-school or even high school at the time that I was ready to begin creating my family. I now know that “thought” I had is not necessarily accurate. I know now more than ever, that women (myself included), can truly pursue some if not all of your aspirations and more—all the while being a mother. I feel sometimes our society tries to “box” us in, creating a pressure that if you become a mother, you are limiting or hindering your personal/professional potential in some fashion. I have found that in my becoming a mother, I have rather leveled-up my potentiality in this life versus experienced a reduction in such.

SL: What’s something you always wanted to do, but didn’t... and why didn’t you? CI: Hold residence in a large city. The closest I ever came to achieving this was in 2008. A close friend of mine moved to Chicago and she really wanted me to join her. I even had a job offer secured with a fabulous firm there, but after deep thought, I chose to remain in North Carolina (my resident state at that time).

SL: Was there something your Mom did when you were a kid that you swore you’d never do as a parent? CI: I have thought about this question… and I really cannot point to one particular “something.” My Mom is and was pretty phenomenal. She’s not perfect, but who is? I never expected her to be perfect. Me becoming a mother myself has allowed me to have a grace and appreciation for my own mother. I love her very much and see her worth.

SL: What did you think you wanted to be when you grew up? CI: Are you ready for this? A marine biologist. I love the ocean so much. The ocean is a whole other world to me. Despite not pursuing the career path, I am Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) certified and love to dive, snorkel, and all the things.

SL: How have your notions of what it means to be a Mom changed over your lifetime? CI: I don’t sweat the small stuff. If my children make a mess, have a spill, get frustrated, resist my ask, or more… I try to look at the situation right then and there and ask myself... Is this something that should genuinely disturb my peace or no? I’ve found that roughly 90% of the acts or situations I referenced are simply kids being kids. We are all going to make mistakes, feel emotions (good, bad, or indifferent), no matter our age. I have a large bucket of grace with Haleigh and Barrett. I do discipline, when warranted, but I have a better discernment now that I’m almost 10 years into motherhood.

SL: What’s the best family vacation you’ve ever taken? CI: Ritz CarltonSarasota, FL. We’ve vacationed at this location twice and absolutely love it. One trip was just the children and me. The staff is incredibly courteous and eager to help, they have both a pool at the resort and then an entire beach club a few blocks down from the main resort. Transportation to the club is provided hourly via a private van. The beach club has pool-side service for all

Momilies

your needs, multiple pools, plenty of kids clubs, etc. and cocktails on-the-ready for the adults. The rooms are spacious and there are places to eat on site. The beach club has its own private area of the beach—which is very nice for both privacy and security.

SL: Is there a moment that radically changed the way you saw Motherhood? CI: One-hundred percent-when I went through my divorce. I became a single-mom with two small children. That experience facilitated personal, spiritual, and emotional growth for me on so many levels. Specific to Motherhood, I learned that you cannot fill other’s cups from an empty cup. It’s so important to dedicate a piece of your week, a time of day/night, or even 20-30 minutes, if you can, just to yourself. I often feel that there is a perception that a “great” mother is one who is constantly in a state of giving to others and her children. It’s so important and comforting to know that the ratio between what you give, and what you receive, needs balance from time to time. It is not a sign of weakness or selfishness to be in an energy of receiving— especially when you’re a mother.

SL: When did you know you were ready to have kids? CI: At my first elevated-successful point in my career (early 30s). I was ready at that point to create. I wanted to share this life with children and begin to see the world through their eyes. I was ready to invest my time, energy, and emotions into what would become a great love— my love of my children.

SL: What’s your favorite photo of your family or kids? CI: The Christmas photo of my children and I when I was a single mom. The photos from that photo session embody a tremendous amount of strength, resilience, and a whole-lot-of love.

SL: What was the first year of motherhood like for you? CI: Challenging at first, then wonderful. I had to reframe my mindset. When our daughter was six-months-old, her father was gone quite a bit pursuing his MBA in another city, and I was a full-time sales director with a large territory. We had no family nearby. I became much more effective at managing my time—professionally and personally. I was also more discerning of where, with whom, and how I spent my time. I reframed my mindset to gratitude for the opportunities I had been afforded, versus allowing myself to be overwhelmed. I hold that first year close to my heart. I was blessed to have so much quality time with Haleigh and experience and share so many special moments—just between the two of us. They are forever ours.

SL: What do you want or wish most for your kids? CI: Happiness, self-love and to give kindness to self and others. Great health, success where they want it, and a foundation rooted in faith.

SL: What are some of your biggest struggles as a Mom? CI: Balance, emotions, and discernment. My children have two homes—mine and their father’s home. Their bonus dad travels a bit for work, I’m an entrepreneur, and both Haleigh and Barrett are involved in sports and extracurriculars. I manage all the enrollments for both, and coordinate all the calendars (professional and personal) between my home and their father. I’ve found that the children do best and have peace when they know what to expect from the parents/adults. Haleigh is my oldest (she’ll be 10 in April) and we always have our conversations on what her week looks like— the comings-and-goings. I try not to leave anything up to chance, unless its what we’re doing for dinner or on the weekend. I am often asking the children what their preference is, whenever I can. I’ve also found that when I “check-in” with them every three months or so, and ask them if they still enjoy their athletics/extracurriculars, its appreciated. I want them to have fun, do what they love, and appreciate their teachers, coaches and learning.

SL: What would your perfect day off be like? Describe it. CI: I’m in a relaxing, cushioned lounge chair on a white-sand beach, clear sky above, turquoise ocean straight ahead, and a chilled glass of my favorite Rose Champagne in my hand.

SL: What’s the one song that means the most to you? CI: Somewhere over the Rainbow by Judy Garland. I remember watching The Wizard of Oz for the first time when I was close to Haleigh’s age. My mom shared with me how Judy Garland struggled with her body-image during the production of the movie, and sadly how it caused her other issues that followed her into adulthood. My mom said she felt like Judy Garland had a tremendous amount of stardom potential, and that perhaps if she had not been judged or even ridiculed, that we would’ve seen more of her gifts. I have a nice collection of ornate Wizard of Oz music boxes from the San Francisco Music Co. They are special and one day will be gifts to my children. I also have a commissioned oil painting of a bluebird in my office. “Bluebirds fly” in the lyrics. It’s a symbol of freedom for me. The song lyrics remind me that no matter what you’re walking through, running away from or running towards, that if you dare to dream, your dream really can come true. You just have to believe in your dream.

SL: What advice would you give to your younger self about Motherhood? CI: You should not feel guilty for accomplishing the goals that are important to you in this life, before becoming a mother. When that time comes, know that you will want to give your children 100% of you, and while that is filled with good intention, do not forget your own needs. You will be able to give more of yourself to your children—spiritually, physically, and emotionally—when you dedicate time to replenishing all those areas within you.

SL: Is there a quote, saying, words of advice or scripture you consider words to live by? CI: What you think, you become.

SL: If you could share a meal with any woman past, present or future who would it be? Why? CI: My maternal grandmother, Ruth. She worked in a male-dominated industry (the glass industry) years ago, and was a changemaker. She had a thick skin, but a heart of gold. I never had the chance to learn her recipe for the delicious chicken-and-dumplings she’d make us when I as a little girl. She fell ill to dementia and later, Alzheimers when I was in my 20s. I would love to connect with her again.

SL: What Mom from real-life or even TV/movies do you admire most? CI: Reese Witherspoon. Years ago she went through a divorce with children. At that time, she was a fairly new Hollywood actress. She then dove deeply into her career, but also her passion with fashion, later creating her clothing brand, Draper James. Then she was inspired by Oprah’s Book club, and with Reese’s love for reading and empowering women, she created a Book-to-Movie club, and has gone on to produce some amazing works on the screen and in literature. She’s an inspiration not only as a mom, but she also reminds me that when you have a fire in your belly, you can create and build an empire.

SL: At the end of a long day, what do you do for fun or relaxation? CI: I’m a big fan of creating a “spa experience” at home. I light my favorite candles, lock myself in the bathroom, fill the tub with hot water and aromatherapy salts, and put in my AirPods so I can watch my favorite YouTube or Netflix creators/shows in peace.

There is no heroism more extraordinary than motherhood. Moms tirelessly work, care, mend, and ensure that mouths and bodies are fed and clothed. Because they don’t wear capes, their work sometimes goes unrecognized. And because it takes a village to raise a child, they do not act for their benefit. Always willing to lend a helping hand, with heart and soul, these moms perform amazing feats for the greater good of those around them. Welcome to our community’s new superheroes—welcome to GCS Moms League. As a thriving group of nearly 300 North Texas mothers, the GCS Moms League is celebrating its 31st year of fostering friendship, philanthropy, and community.

GCS Moms League is a 501c4 non-profit organization dedicated to serving area families and their communities. They know that raising children, though an extraordinary experience, can also be isolating. Their mission is to connect working moms, stay-athome moms, and school-aged moms with each other through various events catered to all schedules and age groups. It’s an organization where individuals from diverse backgrounds come together to find a sense of self and belonging. But there is so much more to this diverse group of dedicated moms. At GCS Moms League, their mission extends beyond building a strong community — they are deeply committed to giving back and supporting other organizations that make a meaningful impact.

IN A LEAGUE ALL THEIR OWN GCS Moms understand their vital role as super mothers, super friends, and super community supporters. They also realize that work doesn’t work without play—and boy, do they have fun! Adult activities like Game Nights allow moms to let loose and have some fun. Nights like these bring out all the board game-loving moms to meet and learn a new side of each other. They host Girls’ and Couples’ Nights Out, for a chance to explore some local dining, enjoy a relaxing meal or drinks, and connect with

each other’s significant others to build a sense of community. At their Monthly Book Club, you can enjoy a glass of wine, a bite to eat, and make new friends while you are discussing the GCS Book Club selection. At Breakfast Socials, members gather, connect and share, while enjoying a meal in a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The GCS Adult Activities team works hard year-round to organize events that keep members active and foster connections among moms. But their biggest event by far is their annual fundraiser—The Great Gala. This year,

the GCS (Grapevine Colleyville Southlake) Moms League is happy to present “The Queen’s Ball,” a Bridgerton-Inspired Charity Gala benefitting Keller’s Stepping Stones Foundation on Saturday, April 5, 2025 at The Bowden Weddings & Events in Keller.

GCS MOMS + STEPPING STONES

Each year, GCS Moms League thoughtfully selects a charity partner that aligns with their values of friendship, philanthropy and community. As GCS enters its 31st year, they’re thrilled to support their 2025 charity

gala partner, Stepping Stones Foundation. Stepping Stones is a North Texas 501c3 charitable organization that’s dedicated to empowering youth and teens in crisis throughout North Texas with a mission of “Paving a Path to a Positive Future.”

Established in 2009 by world-renowned photographer Christina Bynum-Breaux, the foundation has grown to provide comprehensive support programs for thousands of youths and their families, as well as work with mothers in need. Partnering with Child Protective Services, school counselors, and law enforcement, Stepping Stones identifies and assists children from elementary to high school with tailored resources and services to pave a path to a positive future.

“AS MOTHERS, WE WANT TO UPLIFT ALL CHILDREN AND ENSURE THEY HAVE THE SUPPORT THEY NEED TO THRIVE,” SAID KATIE CASSELL OF KELLER, CO-CHAIR OF THE GALA. “TODAY’S YOUTH FACE IMMENSE CHALLENGES — WE ARE COMMITTED TO BEING PART OF THE SOLUTION.”

THE GREAT GALA A Philanthropic Extravaganza

Each year, GCS picks a different theme that benefits a different charity. In 2023, guests enjoyed a “Met Gala” inspired event with a fabulous red-carpet entry and paparazzi photographers. In 2024, The Great Gala theme was “Moulin Rouge,” and this year’s gala will be even more spectacular with the Bridgerton-themed ”The Queen’s Ball.”

The Grapevine Colleyville Southlake Moms League invites the North Texas community to don their finest for The Queen’s Ball. This year’s event will feature an elegant evening of dinner, drinks, raffles, a live auction, and dancing. Special guest and local author Tamika Taylor will emcee the evening’s festivities. This year’s auction is packed with extraordinary items and once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Indulge in over $5,000 worth of luxurious spa services, exclusive vacation getaways, and curated experiences you won’t find anywhere else. Highlights include:

Whether you’re here for the elegance, the cause or the entertainment, your presence makes a difference. We can’t wait to share this truly – Krista Rice,President GCS Moms League.

Happy belated new year. I hope yours started better than mine. The new year gave Revi, my 13-year-old daughter, and me the flu. It also gave the Detroit Lions, my favorite football team since childhood, a bye in the NFL playoffs. Ultimately, it didn’t turn out well for the Lions. It never does. That’s okay. This story isn’t about them. No... this story is about what happens when illness, football, and a daughter who doesn’t know much about football, are set ablaze by the napalm known as maximum strength nighttime Nyquil.

At the onset of the new year, in medicated dazes, Revi and I watched the NFL wildcard playoff game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Washington Commanders. The game would decide which team would have the privilege of meeting the Lions in the second round of the playoffs. My interest in the game was understandable. Revi’s interest in the game was not. She doesn’t like football, but she does like mysteries. It turned out her preoccupation was not with the game. It was with the mystery behind the full name of the Tampa Bay Bucs. It could have been the fluid in my ears or her inability to fully enunciate on account of a sore throat and extreme sinus congestion, but I blame it on the Nyquil that caused her to suggest the names Tampa Bay Butt Cameras, Tampa Bay Butt Handlers, and Tampa Bay Butt Commanders. Even though the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are pirates, I never associated them with butts. Given my fever had tripped 102 degrees, I could not help but further delve into the possibilities.

The Tamp Bay Butt Cameras, at least on the surface, does not appear to be a very threatening team. The team’s name was born via an uncertified doula in a seedy short-term vacation rental. The team is owned by former Airbnb and VRBO hosts who lost their listing privileges. Go-Pro cameras are discreetly, sometimes prominently, and always uncomfortably affixed to the players’ uniforms. The team strikes with stealth. The opposition does not know that they’ve lost the game until it has been over for hours and they see the awkward and oddly angled replays on YouTube.

Tampa Bay Butt Handlers are an intimidating team. Despite their aggressive nature, they do not win many games. The Butt Handlers are comprised solely of centers and quarterbacks of questionable character. They will regularly field 10 players instead of the allowable number of 11. They prefer to play outmanned. On offense, they are known for deception. The five quarterbacks always line up directly under the five centers. They regularly commit delay of game penalties caused by prolonged snap counts. Defensively, they play according to a bend, but do not break scheme. They are a fast team. The need to be. They only tackle their opposition from behind.

The Tampa Bay Butt Commanders are known as an offensive team. This is despite their ceaseless defensive posture. The team is comprised of once powerful, now disgraced, Hollywood types. They pirate the scripts, I mean the playbooks, of their opponents. They turn the X’s and O’s into quid-pro-quos. They give their opposition favorable field position in exchange for encroachment, holding, false start, and offsides penalties. The final quarter of the game is reserved for non-disclosure agreements and the quarter of a million dollars they offer to the refs and the opposition in exchange for letting them score.

In the future, I won’t watch football with Revi after she takes Nyquil. In fact, I won’t watch football after I take Nyquil. The possibilities introduced by the Nyquil Football Language (aka NFL) are not good.

THE ROSE TABLE

L ADLE

There’s nothing like a steaming bowl of soup to warm you up when temperatures drop. As the chill sets in, a big pot simmering on the stovetop fills the house with comforting aromas, making every single sip and slurp a little taste of cozy. These soul-warming recipes prove that cold weather is no match for a little ladle love!

GREEK LEMON CHICKEN SOUP

1) Drizzle chicken breast with olive oil and season with sea salt and pepper. Roast at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 30-45 minutes or until an instant read thermometer inserted in the center reads 165 degrees. Remove from the oven and let cool while you prepare the soup. .................................................................................................................................................

2) In a large soup pot set over medium high heat, bring the broth to a boil. Add orzo and boil for about two minutes less than the package instructs. .................................................................................................................................................

13) In a medium bowl, beat eggs with a metal whisk. Temper the eggs by slowly drizzling one cup of the hot broth, whisking constantly, into the beaten eggs until the egg mixture is warmed through. Slowly add the egg mixture to the broth, reduce heat to medium low, and cook, whisking constantly, until soup has thickened to the consistency of heavy cream (5-10 minutes).

.................................................................................................................................................

4) Shred chicken and add to soup with 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice, stirring well to combine. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Stir in fresh dill and serve immediately.

My love of Greek food knows no bounds. This simple soup packs a punch with delicious, bright lemon flavor. It’s super lemony so of course I love it. Lemon is one of my favorite flavors! This is the perfect, bright dish to warm up with on a dreary night. This soup comes together in less than twenty minutes once the chicken is cooked. The only tricky thing about this recipe is tempering the eggs. Take care to very slowly stream the warm broth into the eggs, so as to not accidentally cook them.

Gotta love soup season!

AVGOLEMONO INGREDIENTS

1 pound bone-in, skin-on chicken breast

6 cups chicken broth

3/4 cup orzo

2 small lemons or one large lemon (1/4 cup juice)

2 large eggs

Fresh chopped dill

Oh, Minestrone. It’s a classic for a reason. This comforting soup is as healthy as it is tasty.

Full of vegetables and nutrients, it is a quick way to get a nutritious meal on the table. What’s more comforting than a bowl of minestrone by the fire on a freezing day? Minestrone takes about 30 minutes to make and is full of celery, carrots, onion, garlic, tomatoes, zucchini, white beans, and spinach — to name a few. Many people use kidney beans, but if there’s one food I really despise, it’s kidney beans. White beans like cannellini or Great Northern Beans are much more my preference. I used ditalini pasta, but you could use a different noodle if you prefer. I love Minestrone with fresh basil and a whole lot of parmesan cheese.. and don’t forget a crusty bread to slop up every last drop!

INGREDIENTS

1 Tbsp olive oil

1 Tbsp unsalted butter

3 stalks celery

3 large carrots

1/2 a yellow onion

3 garlic cloves, minced

1 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp salt

1/4 tsp pepper

1 (28 oz) can whole peeled tomatoes or crushed tomatoes

4 cups vegetable broth

1 zucchini, quartered and cut into pieces

1 (14 oz) can cannellini beans

3/4 cup ditalini pasta

Salt and pepper to taste

2 handfuls baby spinach

Fresh basil and Italian parsley

Parmesan cheese

MINESTRONE

(1) Slice celery. Peel and slice carrots. Dice onion. (You should have one cup each of celery, carrots, and onions.)

.................................................................................................................................................

(2) In a Dutch oven or large pot, sauté celery, carrots, and onion in olive oil and butter until onions are translucent and carrots have softened, about 8-10 minutes. Add garlic and cook for another minute. Season vegetables with dried oregano.

.................................................................................................................................................

(3) Add whole peeled tomatoes and smoosh them with a wooden spoon, crushing them against the side of the pot to break them up. When tomatoes have mostly turned to sauce, add vegetable broth, beans, zucchini, and salt and pepper, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium, cover, and simmer for ten minutes.

.................................................................................................................................................

(4) Add the pasta and simmer soup, covered, for about 8 minutes or until the pasta is cooked al dente, lifting the lid to stir the soup occasionally.

.................................................................................................................................................

(5) Stir in the spinach, turn off the heat, and put the lid back on for a couple of minutes to allow the spinach to melt. Stir in the herbs, give it a taste and adjust salt and pepper to taste. Serve with parmesan cheese and crusty bread.

CREAMY CHICKEN CHEESY SOUP

1) Cut chicken tenders into small pieces and season well with sea salt, black pepper, paprika, and dried oregano. I never measure. Just season each piece thoroughly, turn the tenders over and season the other side. .................................................................................................................................................

2) Heat vegetable oil in a Dutch oven or large pot. Add chicken and cook over medium heat until browned on both sides. Remove chicken to a plate and set aside.

.................................................................................................................................................

3) Lower heat slightly. Add 1 Tbsp olive oil, celery, onion and carrots. Cook until softened, about five minutes. Add garlic and cook for two more minutes. While veggies are cooking, grate cheddar. You should have 1/2 a cup. (But honestly, I won’t judge you if you use more!)

4) Add chicken back in, then add chicken broth, milk, heavy cream, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, lower heat, and add cheddar cheese and ditalini pasta. Cover and let simmer for about eight minutes, stirring occasionally. (You don’t want the pasta to stick to the bottom!) .................................................................................................................................................

5) When pasta is done, add two cups fresh spinach and cover. Steam will wilt spinach down in a few minutes. Stir in spinach. Serve with crusty bread, and top with parmesan or cheddar.

This is a 1-pot dinner. It’s pretty quick to make. First you brown seasoned chicken, then you sauté carrots, onions, celery, add a bit of garlic, add in some chicken broth, milk, cream, and a little bit of cheddar cheese. It’s the secret ingredient and it gives this soup incredible flavor. There isn’t even a ton of cheddar in the soup – just 2 ounces, which is half a cup once you grate it. I used sharp Tillamook cheddar — you want a cheddar that will melt really well (not an aged crumbly one). Add the cutest little ditalini pasta, wilt down spinach and you’ve got one fabulous, flavorful dish!

INGREDIENTS

1 Tbsp vegetable oil

1 pound chicken tenders (or chicken breast)

Sea salt, pepper, paprika, dried oregano

1 Tbsp olive oil

1 cup diced carrots

1/2 cup chopped yellow onion

1/2 cup diced celery

2 large garlic cloves, chopped 4 cups chicken broth

1 cup milk (I used 2% milk)

1/2 cup heavy cream

2 oz cheddar cheese

3/4 tsp salt

1/2 tsp black pepper

2 cups Ditalini pasta

2 cups fresh spinach

Note: the noodles will absorb the liquid as it sits. If you want a thinner soup, feel free to cook the noodles separately and add them to individual bowls. Personally I love a hearty soup! To reheat leftovers if you cooked the noodles in the soup, just add more chicken broth and milk, reheat on the stove, and adjust the seasonings to taste.

If you love sausage, cheese, and potatoes, you’ll love this simple German soup. It has tons of flavor thanks to the smoked sausage, paprika, browned onions, garlic, and crushed red pepper. The exact cooking time will depend on how big your potato cubes are, but this soup took me about 30 minutes. This is richer than a broth soup such as chicken noodle, but lighter than, say, mushroom cream soup. It’s somewhere in between — and it is absolutely delicious!

INGREDIENTS

2 Tbsp olive oil

1 yellow onion, diced

4 garlic cloves

1/2 tsp paprika

1/2 tsp dried oregano

Dash crushed red pepper

12 oz smoked sausage, sliced

1.5 pounds baby gold potatoes, cubed

4 cups chicken stock

3/4 tsp salt

1/2 tsp black pepper

1 cup milk

1/2 cup heavy cream

2 oz cheddar cheese, grated (1/4 cup)

Fresh chives

COZY POTATO SAUSAGE SOUP

1) Heat olive oil in a Dutch oven. Add diced onion and cook until soft, about five minutes. Add garlic and cook another minute or two until it starts to brown. Season with salt and pepper. Stir in paprika, dried oregano, and crushed red pepper.

2) Add sliced sausage and cook until browned on both sides, about 5-8 minutes.

.................................................................................................................................................

3) Add potatoes, chicken stock, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer. Cover and cook until potatoes are tender, about 15 minutes. Stir in milk, cream, cheddar cheese, and chives and heat through.

ROASTED TOMATO BASIL SOUP

1) Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat. Arrange Roma tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, and onion pieces on the mat. Slice the top off of garlic heads and set cut-side down on the mat. Drizzle olive oil over everything and season with sea salt and black pepper. Add a few sprigs of fresh rosemary and thyme. Roast for about 45-50 minutes until starting to brown.

2) Squeeze the garlic out of the bulbs and discard the bulbs. Transfer everything except for the sticks of the herbs to a soup pot. Blend well with chicken broth, heavy cream, fresh basil, sugar, salt, and pepper to taste. If you don’t have an immersion blender, blend everything in a blender until smooth, then transfer to a soup pot and bring to a simmer.

3) Bring to a simmer and stir in a little parmesan cheese until it melts. Delicious served with a grilled cheese sandwich!

This Roasted Tomato Basil Soup is the ultimate comfort food. Serve with a grilled cheese preferably when it’s raining and you’ve got yourself a whole cozy vibe. Roasting the tomatoes with garlic and fresh herbs will make your whole house smell amazing. Seriously, it’s aromatherapy. If I ever come out with a candle line, there’s going to be a Roasted Tomato scent I swear! You could use veggie broth if you prefer, but I always have chicken broth in the pantry so that is what I used and it was delicious. The secret ingredient here is parmesan cheese melted into the soup. I’m a sucker for that little bit of salty tangy that parmesan gives Tomato Basil Soup... It really makes i!

INGREDIENTS

2 pounds roma tomatoes, halved

1 pint cherry tomatoes

2 garlic heads

1 small onion, quartered

Salt, pepper, olive oil, rosemary, thyme

1 cup chicken broth

1/2 cup heavy cream

2-3 sprigs fresh basil leaves

Pinch sugar

Salt and pepper to taste

1-2 Tbsp parmesan cheese

I am obsessed with this bacon corn chowder. It’s the perfect thing to make when you can still get great fresh corn (though you can use canned corn in a pinch). This is cozy comfort food at its finest. Creamy chowder only gets better as it sits, making it excellent leftover. It’s cheesy nature would make this a really fun dish to serve in little bread bowls. There’s half a block of Colby jack cheese melted right into the soup, giving it a fantastically decadent feel. Add cream to taste. I didn’t even measure! I just felt it with my soul. Add a little, give it a stir, give it a taste, and add a little more until you’ve reached the perfect level of creaminess. I served this with tortilla chips to dip or crumble in the soup. Yum!

INGREDIENTS

6 slices thick-cut bacon

1 large onion, diced (1 1/2 cups)

3 stalks celery, diced (1 cup)

4 cloves garlic, minced

2 Tbsp flour

4 cups chicken broth

2 cups whole milk

1 pound Yukon gold potatoes (3 potatoes), cut into small cubes

4 ears corn (or two 15 oz cans)

2-3 tsp salt

Black pepper to taste

4 sprigs fresh thyme

4 oz Colby jack cheese, grated

1/2 cup-1 cup heavy cream

BACON CORN CHOWDER

.................................................................................................................................................

(1) Cut bacon into lardons and fry over medium heat in a large Dutch oven until crispy. Remove bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside on a paper towel.

.................................................................................................................................................

(1) Lower the heat slightly and add diced onion and celery to the bacon fat. Cook until the onion is translucent, about 8-10 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes. Sprinkle veggie with flour, stir, and cook for 1-2 minutes until garlic is fragrant.

.................................................................................................................................................

(1) Add chicken broth, whole milk, cubed potatoes, corn, salt, pepper, and thyme. Bring to a boil then reduce heat and simmer covered until potatoes are fork-tender, about 15 minutes. .................................................................................................................................................

(1) Remove thyme and blend about 2-3 cups of the soup either by transferring to a blender or right in the pot with an immersion blender. Ooh-and-ahh as the blended potato thickens the soup.

.................................................................................................................................................

(1) Add cheese and cream, stirring until cheese is melted. Add bacon back in, reserving some for garnish. Taste and add more salt and pepper to taste. Serve with bread and/or tortilla chips.

CATCH 22 SPORTS GRILL

March Madness is upon us and if you’re looking for a place to catch all the games and highlights, Roanoke has recently added Catch 22 Sports Grill to its restaurant lineup. Its quickly become a favorite destination for sports enthusiasts and foodies alike since opening in June of last year. With cozy booths and friendly staff, Catch 22 was designed to feel as comfortable as watching the game at home—but with TVs every way your head could turn so you don’t miss a minute of the action.

One of the standout features of Catch 22 is its eclectic menu, which boasts a variety of dishes crafted from the freshest, and often also local, ingredients. Starters include familiar sports bar favorites, but with an elevated twist. The Loaded Nachos feature house fried tortilla chips, Monterey jack cheese, $100 chili, green chile queso, a scoop of fresh guacamole and a side of house made

salsa. Seafood aficionados will appreciate the Nawlin’s Drunken Shrimp, which offers garlicky jumbo shrimp sautéed in a spicy Cajun ale butter sauce, served with garlic ciabatta bread. All apps are generous enough to share and you’ll want to so you can save room for a main course. Among the highlights are their signature burgers made with Nolan Ryan Goodstock beef, each thoughtfully prepared to offer a unique culinary experience. My not-to-be-missed in this category is the Cowboy 22, which features Tillamook cheddar cheese, bacon jam, mayo, smoky BBQ sauce and fried onion straws, all nestled within a toasted challah bun. Again, for my seafood lovers, the Fish ‘N Chips is a must have. Beer battered Haddock is flash fried golden and served with homemade tartar sauce and cocktail sauce. The cocktail sauce has a secret ingredient I couldn’t quite put my finger on, but it’s unique, addictive and great on fries.

No meal at Catch 22 is complete without indulging in one their delectable desserts. In fact, right when you sit down, I’d ask to reserve a piece of Banoffee Pie. I have not been lucky enough to try this yet as it sells out, but it sounds heavenly. It’s a crunchy graham cracker crust filled with fresh bananas, pudding, dulce de leche and homemade whipped cream. They also offer Cappuccino Pie made with Henry’s coffee ice cream, Oreos and a healthy dose of whipped cream and a fresh baked Brownie Sundae.

Complementing the food is a comprehensive selection of cocktails. My favorites for spring are their Spicy Mango Margarita and the Wild Pitch Spritz, which is a refreshing blend of gin, St. Germain, lemon, mint and champagne. The John Daly is

another local fave featuring sweet tea vodka, lemonade and fresh squeezed lemon. A Catch 22 Espresso Martini is a good way to kick off a long afternoon of college sports while the Chocolate Martini is a perfect way to close out the meal.

Beyond the culinary delights, Catch 22 enhances the dining experience with an arcade located in the heart of their dining room, providing entertainment (or even a little healthy competition) for both kids and adults. They also offer catering services, making hosting in your home a breeze. Whether you’re a sports fan looking to catch a game, a foodie eager to explore a diverse menu, or someone seeking a lively atmosphere for a night out, Catch 22 promises an experience that satisfies all.
