SPRING FEVER

“Live every day as if it is a festival. Turn your life into a celebration.”

It’s always a sign that spring is here when our event calendar section we call ‘DateBook’ is filled with local festivals. There are so many happening right now and throughout May into June. It’s a great opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy some beautiful weather before summer gets here. And speaking of taking the chance to be outside before the heat gets here, I have noticed a lot of my neighbors doing their spring gardening and cleaning up their yards from winter. Spring is an excellent time of year for catching up on any exterior home improvements. I’ve been looking at my windows thinking they need a good spring cleaning, and I have this urge to organize everything in my home and purge. I’ve definitely caught a case of spring fever.

That sounds like a good segue into our cover story featuring Chad and Lisa Crenshaw— owners of Love That Door. I have seen their advertisements for years, but I’ve never seen a story about the company and it’s owners. Their dedication to quality craftsmanship and customer experience is admirable, to say the least. And that doesn’t even begin to explain how beautiful their iron doors are and how much they can improve any home’s curb appeal. This is one home improvement I can say for sure adds value to your home—plus they can create one-of-a-kind custom designs to fit any style. I now see why their customers say they “Love That Door!” Now I really want one. I think it’s just what the doctor prescribed to cure my illness.

See, there’s an illness that has been documented by poets for centuries. Its symptoms include a flushed face, increased heart rate, appetite loss, restlessness and daydreaming—it's spring fever. It’s that wonderfully amorphous disease we all recognize come April and May. Spring fever is any of a number of mood, physical, or behavioral changes which may be experienced coinciding with the onset of spring—particularly restlessness, busyness, laziness or amorousness.

I do feel like I want to sleep in more often, and I do feel a strong affection to improving my home’s curb appeal, planting flowers, and having clean windows. Maybe my spring fever has gone to my head or maybe I just Love That Door. It’s like that saying about opportunity... When one door closes, a prettier iron one opens. Right? Yep, that’s for sure what they say.

Open Door Season

“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock…”
— Revelations 3:20

It’s been said that “when opportunity comes knocking, be ready to answer the door.” And while we never want to miss an opportunity, sometimes we make decisions without consulting God first. Particularly when we attempt to open doors that God wants to remain closed. Whether it be a new relationship or a new position, a perceived opportunity can be concealed as an opportunistic trap from the enemy.

So, how do we decipher if an open door is unlatched by God or a trick lock from Satan? By familiarizing ourselves with God through His Word. James 4:8 says that when we “draw close to God, He will draw near to us.” And Proverbs 3:5-7 promises that when we trust and acknowledge God in all our ways, He will direct our paths. God is not a God of confusion, but of peace (1 Corinthians 14:33). He never misspeaks, misleads, or misrepresents Himself. Instead, He provides us with strength and peace when we include Him in our decision making (Psalms 29:11)—opting whether to push through a closed door or walk past it.

In Jeremiah 33:3, God says that when we “Call on Him, He will answer us, and tell us [and even show us] great and mighty things, [things which have been confined and hidden], which we do not know and understand and cannot distinguish.” However, when things don’t go as anticipated, we tend to express, “It’s the Devil!”

Admittedly, I’ve declared this more times than I want to admit. But over the years, I’ve learned that God has the authority to padlock the places He wants us to avoid. Especially when we’ve convinced ourselves it’s a place we deserve to be. Nevertheless, I believe it’s better to wait for God to open the right door than to run into the wrong one.

I have lived long enough to realize that not every open door provided me with an opportunity. Some were obstacles—stumbling blocks wrapped up as a blessing. Having doors repeatedly closed in my face left me discouraged. But I found great comfort in the scriptures, particularly Hebrews 10:35.

This verse provided much encouragement and prevented me from throwing away my confidence. It assured me that a sealed door didn’t necessarily mean that I had been “locked out.” But it is God’s way of preparing me for something greater; an entrance that He would usher me into Himself—rendering me exceedingly, abundantly above all I could ask or think (Ephesians 3:20).

As I look back over my life, I appreciate the open doors that gave me a way in and a way out. I’m grateful for the closed ones that led to a dead end. I believe the closed doors were God’s “eviction notices” shouting “Do not enter!” Believe it or not, there were a few doors that God deadbolted to protect me. I’m thankful that I serve a God Who gives each of us an opportunity to spread the gospel by providing “doors of faith.” These passageways serve as gates of communication where we are able to share all the marvelous things, He has done for us (Acts 14:27).

Yes! God opens doors. But He closes them also (Revelations 3:8). Hence, it doesn’t matter which way the door swings. We serve a God Who can place our hand on the handle that will unlock our predetermined purpose and close the ones that attempt to take us off course. A God Who will never place us in a situation where we feel tricked, trapped, or traumatized, but One Who will always provide us with a way to escape the unbearable circumstances we (perhaps) create on our own (1 Corinthians 10:13). Whenever your life feels like a revolving door, take a moment to consult the Lord before entering. ASK for the things you need, SEEK the things your heart desires, and keep KNOCKing until God opens the door that leads to your Divine destiny (Matthew 7:7).

Amanda Churchill’s first novel entitled The Turtle House spans decades, wars, generations and continents, but never loses its warmth and connection.

Lia Cope and her grandmother, Mineko, are sharing a bedroom in Lia’s parents’ home. Lia has a brilliant career as an architect that’s recently stalled out and Grandminnie’s house also burned to the ground. Their favorite place to talk becomes the roof outside of their bedroom’s second floor window. Lia takes this opportunity, while she’s working at a stationery store, to record the story of her grandmother’s life. Grandminne presents a rough exterior to the world and, as we learn her story, it’s not hard to understand why. She shares her pain as the “unbeautiful” of the two sisters, scorned by their mother and teased by their neighbors in Kadoma, Japan. With no expectation for love or a good match, she finds comfort in an abandoned house decorated with turtles. It becomes a centerpiece for her life and her loves.

Churchill’s gift for a turn of phrase brings humor and irony to the narrative. Of the tiny room where Mineko lives before she moves on base with her new American husband she says “where she slept now was not so much a home as it was a cabinet for bodies.” Her one true love, a wealthy young man with plans for university says, “We are unlikely,” as

they are falling for each other. The beginning of World War II brings destruction and death to Kadoma. Mineko eventually finds herself in Tokyo with her dearest friend, Kumiko, the daughter of her family’s housekeeper. There she meets an American GI who changes the course of her life.

The narrative swings from the 1940s in Japan to the late 1990s in Curtain, Texas with great ease. Churchill is a master of the flashback and segues come and go smoothly as the story of Mineko’s life unrolls while we also learn about Lia’s challenges in architecture school and the appearance of her nemesis as her boss at the prestigious Austin architecture firm where she has scored a job. Mineko’s family suffers from the same problems that all families do: thwarted expectations, difficult communication, efforts to save face and multiple misunderstandings. Her two children want the best for her, of course, but it turns out that Lia, though she is a generation removed, understands Mineko best. Their secret project throws the family in to chaos when it is revealed.

This novel ranges not only across the world, but across life spans from childhood memories to the issues of aging. Mineko’s family chooses an assisted living facility for her, but meets her independence head-on the night she disappears.

A story of intergenerational friendship, family, coming of age, identity and love.

VISIT JOHN WAYNE: AN AMERICAN EXPERIENCE FOR FREE

3 WAYS TO EXPLORE THE LIFE & LEGACY OF THE ICONIC ACTOR

If you’re a teacher, mother, or member of the U.S. Armed Forces, you can visit John Wayne: An American Experience, the museum that explores the life and legacy of the iconic actor, for free during certain days this May. First, John Wayne loved children—the famed actor had seven of them—and strongly believed in values such as patriotism and grit. For Teacher Appreciation Week, May 6-10, John Wayne: An American Experience will celebrate the teachers who dedicate their lives to teaching children those values. Educators with school ID will get free admission into the exhibit that week, as well as 15% off purchases in John Wayne Stock & Supply, the retail shop attached to the exhibit.

John Wayne also loved to go big on holidays. He wanted the people in his life to feel honored on special occasions. He especially celebrated his mother. For that reason, on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 12, moms will get free admission into John Wayne: An American Experience. As an additional treat, moms will also get 15% off purchases in John Wayne Stock & Supply, as well as have a chance to sample Gold Handle Coffee, named for the gold-handled mugs John Wayne gave to the castmates and crew of his movies. Finally, John Wayne played military men in movies and is just as well known for his patriotism as his films. In the many war films he starred in, John Wayne’s commitment to honorably represent those who defend our freedom shines through. While the Duke devoted much of his career to portraying members of the Armed Forces as a form of tribute, he was always eager to do more, whether it be volunteering to serve them holiday meals or traveling to war-torn countries on USO tours to lift spirits. To honor our nation’s service men and women, on Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 18, veterans and active-duty military with ID get free admission and a 15% discount in John Wayne Stock & Supply.

Sprawling over 10,000 square feet, the John Wayne: An American Experience exhibit is structured to give guests an intimate tour of the life of John Wayne. Starting with his early childhood and career, each room highlights an aspect of The Duke’s legacy. For film aficionados, an extensive gallery called “Life on Screen” highlights the most iconic film props and costumes. In the “America, Why I Love Her” gallery, guests can immerse themselves in patriotism through Grammy-nominated original poems recited by John Wayne. Patrons of the exhibit have exclusive access to never-before-seen family photos and correspondences that have been thoughtfully curated by the Wayne family to give guests a holistic view of the icon, whose values translate both on and off the silver screen. John Wayne: An American Experience is in the Fort Worth Stockyards in the Historic Exhibits Building located at 2501 Rodeo Plaza, Fort Worth, Texas 76164. Tickets to the exhibit are $22.95 for adults, $20.95 for seniors 65+, students with college ID and military with ID, and $17.95 for kids 6-12 at johnwayne.com/experience.

Kids 5 and younger are admitted for free.

You won’t want to miss this wonderful duo Friday and Saturday from 4-7pm. Guests can also enjoy Erick Fayard, a solo acoustic guitarist and vocalist who sings a variety of hits from multiple genres. He’ll perform Friday afternoon from noon until 3pm. The Cotton Belt Country Club, that’s all-new Down on Main Street, will also have a stage with exciting acts still to be announced, along with the Friday night headliner. A great place for kids to play is Down on Main Street at the KidZone featuring all kinds of exciting activities and at the Carnival Midway. Main Street Fest is taking a stand against inflation. WHY WE LOVE THAT DOOR

What a transformation! These are just a few of the countless clients who rave about Love That Door.

“I ordered my second front double door last week. Super excited about the new house, entertaining, and showing off my new front door. Chad, the owner, and his staff are always so kind, and more importantly, they always offer the best price in town. These doors are so heavy they feel like you’re opening a bank vault. I’m not kidding, and my first single door, still in use at the lake house, is as beautiful as it was the first day it arrived. There’s only one door in town for me, and it’s called Love That Door.” – DEBRA

“If I could give this establishment 10 stars, then I would. Love That Door does not mess around when it comes to big iron doors and windows. We bought a large triple slider, 15 solid glass windows, and a big iron door installed on our home. I can't wait to get my other property windows and doors in the summer. You can't go wrong with the quality, craftsmanship, and materials from Love That Door.” – ELIAZAR

YOUR GATEWAY TO ELEGANCE AND SAFETY

– MIKE

“Amazing company! Not only did they do a fully custom job adding a set of double doors at my home, we also had them do six doors at the in-laws! The install team was fast great and clean! Both jobs were completed earlier than promised. Even after install they have taken care of us—a storm caused damage to one of our doors. Their team was on it with a repair the following day to get these back in service! Some companies are done after the initial sell but Love That Door has been here for us at any call, can't thank them enough! We truly Love Our Doors!”

“We absolutely love our new double iron door! They were totally worth the wait to get exactly the style of doors that we wanted. Nick was immensely helpful during the initial sales process and contract. We were very impressed with installation at each step of the way—from the initial installation, to the completion of the brick work, to the final touch ups. The process was completed within a couple of weeks and we couldn't be happier. Be warned though, once you install a new door, you may want to upgrade your lights!” – LEANN

25+ Best Hiking Trails to Texas WATERFALLS

Discovering the hidden gems of Texas isn’t just hiking through deserts and tumbleweed as some people like to imagine—it’s also about unearthing its stunning natural beauty filled with water and crystal-clear rivers, especially the best hiking trails with waterfalls. As a Texas travel blogger who’s walked these paths and soaked up the views firsthand, I’m excited to share with you my top picks for waterfall hikes that promise both adventure and spectacular scenery. Some of the best waterfalls include a moderate hike. Here, I will share some of the best places to enjoy the most beautiful waterfalls whether it’s a popular spot or a more hidden gem. We are so fortunate to have so much natural beauty in our state of Texas. I cannot talk about hiking in the great lone star state of Texas without talking about how important it is to protect our nature! Please stay on paths, pick up your trash, and don’t take anything from where you hike. Many places have been destroyed due to sensitive environments and many people touching what they shouldn’t. Let’s make sure that nature is around for others to enjoy.

Hamilton Pool Preserve | Nestled just a short drive from Austin, Hamilton Pool is a vision straight out of a fantasy novel. The swimming hole, with its 50-foot waterfall cascading into a serene pool, surrounded by massive slabs of limestone is a sight to behold—a must-visit for nature enthusiasts. It’s a short hike to get there and you do need to make reservations beforehand.

Pedernales Falls State Park | Pedernales Falls, located in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, features cascading water over layered steps of limestone. As soon as you reach the overlook, you see vast areas of water with so many different falls and bends to explore. While you can’t swim at the falls, you can go further down if wanting to swim.

Gorman Falls | This spot in Colorado Bend State Park is a hidden treasure that feels like a step into another world. The hike is challenging, but incredibly rewarding and includes a difficult and slippery slope that you

navigate by rope to keep your balance. This fun trail ends up leading you to a 70-foot tall waterfall. The moss and fern-coated cliffs create a cool, misty microenvironment that’s refreshingly unique in the Texas landscape.

McKinney Falls State Park | Located on the outskirts of Austin, McKinney Falls offers easy trails leading to the beautiful Onion Creek where you can find both the Upper and Lower Falls. These falls, though not as tall as others, present a tranquil spot for picnics, a gentle swim, or simply enjoying the soothing sounds of water, and also make for a good swimming spot!

Inks Lake State Park | A gem in the Texas Hill Country, Inks Lake State Park is renowned for its scenic landscapes and the wildflowers and cacti that grow among the trails. The park offers a variety of trails, but the one leading upriver of Devil’s Waterhole along Pecan Trail is especially memorable, featuring small waterfalls after fresh rain and

inviting pools. There are so many different routes to take which you can choose depending on your skill level and some even involve minor rock climbing. An interesting highlight of Inks Lake is the striking pink granite formations that dot the landscape. Warm hues of the rock, particularly at sunrise or sunset, create a captivating backdrop against lush greenery and sparkling waters.

Chalk Ridge Falls | Tucked away beneath Stillhouse Hollow Lake dam, Chalk Ridge Falls Park is a sanctuary of tranquility. The main attraction, Chalk Ridge Falls, is a series of small waterfalls flowing over a chalky limestone bed, bordered by a lush forested area. The suspension bridge near the falls adds a picturesque touch to the hike— making it a perfect spot for photography.

Marion Sansom Park | Located in Fort Worth, Marion Sansom Park is a popular destination for both hikers and mountain bikers. The park features several trails that

lead to a stunning waterfall—especially after rainfall. Rugged terrain surrounds the waterfall provides a challenging hike with rewarding views of the natural landscape and Lake Worth at the summit.

Garner State Park | Nestled in the heart of Texas Hill Country, Garner State Park draws visitors with its clear streams, picturesque landscapes, and an abundance of recreational activities. The Frio River, winding through the park, offers a cool respite during the hot Texas summers and provides opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, and tubing. Hiking enthusiasts will appreciate the park’s over 16 miles of scenic trails that offer breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and the Frio River below. One of our favorite hikes is the Blinn River trail, beyond where most people visit to a hidden inlet of clear water pools and miniature waterfalls that are stunning.

Crockett Gardens and Falls | Located within the Georgetown area, Crockett Gardens and Falls are part of the larger Lake Georgetown. Accessible via the Good Water Trail, these gardens are a historical site with a hidden surprise. The first homestead in the area, now overgrown with lush vegetation, leads to the stunning falls. The spring-fed waterfall cascading into a clear pool below is a serene destination for hikers. The gardens and falls, resonating with both history and natural beauty, offer a peaceful retreat into nature.

Window Trail Waterfalls at Big Bend National Park | Window Trail, located in the heart of Big Bend National Park, is a captivating hike culminating in a unique natural feature—Window Waterfalls. This trail offers a moderate trek that winds through stunning canyons and ends at a narrow pour-off with an aweinspiring view where water cascades through a gap in the canyon walls—especially after rain. The trek to the Window Waterfalls is as rewarding as the destination itself, offering panoramic views of the Chisos Mountains and a chance to witness the diverse flora and fauna of the region.

Twin Falls and Sculpture Falls at Barton Creek Greenbelt | Nestled within Austin’s urban oasis, the Barton Creek Greenbelt, Twin Falls and Sculpture Falls stand out as popular natural retreats for locals and visitors alike. Twin Falls, easily reachable after a brief hike, mesmerizes visitors with its dual cascades, especially following a good rain. Further along the Greenbelt, Sculpture Falls offers a secluded haven, perfect for swimming and sunbathing on the natural limestone slabs that surround the waterfall. These spots are prized for their accessibility and the serene experience they offer in the midst of the city’s vibrancy.

Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center | Just a short drive from Austin, the Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center is a hidden gem that offers guided tours to one of the most pristine natural sanctuaries in Texas. The centerpiece of the preserve is a breathtaking grotto and waterfall, where water cascades over fern-lined travertine columns into a crystal-clear pool below. Surrounded by lush vegetation, this secluded spot is a testament to the beauty and tranquility of nature. The Discovery Center’s initiative to educate its visitors on environmental preservation makes a trip here not just a visual feast, but an enlightening experience, encouraging a deeper appreciation for natural wonders. –

Limestone Quarry Park Waterfall in Frisco | Tucked away in a small community park, Limestone Quarry Park is a cherished urban getaway featuring an enchanting waterfall that cascades gently into a picturesque creek below. This small but captivating waterfall, created by the creek as it flows over the limestone formations, offers a serene backdrop for visitors seeking tranquility amidst their busy lives. The park’s natural beauty is complemented by its accessible walking trails, picnic areas, and the clear, cool waters of the creek, which invite visitors to wade and enjoy on warm days. Limestone Quarry Park not only serves as a beautiful local retreat but also highlights the unexpected natural wonders hidden within urban environments.

Airfield Falls Trail, in Fort Worth | Airfield Falls Trailhead & Conservation Park is a delightful escape for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike. It’s the city’s largest natural waterfall, offering a picturesque scene as water tumbles over limestone outcroppings, creating a serene oasis that feels worlds away from urban life. The trail leading to the falls is adorned with aerospace-themed educational signage, paying homage to the nearby Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk amidst the native Texas landscape, culminating at the stunning falls. The addition of a C-9 transport aircraft display near the trailhead provides a unique historical touch, making Airfield Falls Trail not just a natural retreat, but a fascinating nod to Fort Worth’s rich aviation history.

–Wolf Creek Lake Waterfall in Palestine | Deep in the heart of East Texas, nestled among the towering pines and lush foliage of Palestine, lies the hidden gem of Wolf Creek Lake Waterfall. This tranquil spot is a testament to nature’s ability to carve

beauty into the landscape—with water cascading down a rocky slope into the serene waters of Wolf Creek Lake below. The waterfall, while not as large as some, captivates with its peaceful ambiance and the melodious sound of falling water. It’s a favorite among locals for picnicking, photography, and simply soaking in the beauty of untouched nature. The area around Wolf Creek Lake also offers fishing and kayaking opportunities, making it a versatile destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking a quiet retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Prairie Creek Waterfall in Richardson | Located in the bustling suburb of Dallas, Richardson offers a surprising natural beauty. While it’s not necessarily a hike to get there, it’s a whole park and you could turn it into an adventure by walking on the trails.

Krause Springs in Spicewood | A trip to the Hill Country is incomplete without a visit to the enchanting Krause Springs in Spicewood. Known for its lush gardens, butterfly-filled groves, and natural swimming holes, Krause Springs offers a scenic oasis that feels like stepping into a living fairy tale. The property boasts 32 springs, with a man-made pool and a natural pool that flows into Lake Travis. It’s a great place for swimming, picnicking, and camping because of the towering cypress trees and picturesque waterfall. The springs are privately owned but open to the public, providing a perfect escape into nature’s beauty, meticulously maintained for generations.

Nichols Green Park Waterfall in Jacksonville | Jacksonville, Texas, might not be the first place you think of when dreaming of waterfalls, but nestled within Nichols Green Park lies a captivating, gentle waterfall that surprises and delights visitors. This hidden gem is part of a beautifully maintained park that includes walking trails, fishing ponds, and disc golf courses, making it a haven for both nature lovers and those seeking leisure activities. The waterfall itself, while modest in size, creates a tranquil atmosphere, perfect for a moment of reflection or a peaceful picnic. Its accessibility and the serene environment of Nichols Green Park make it a cherished spot among locals and a pleasant surprise for travelers.

Madrid Falls in Big Bend Ranch State Park | Nestled within the vast expanses of Big Bend Ranch State Park, Madrid Falls emerges as Texas’s hidden treasure, standing as the second-highest waterfall in the state. This remarkable natural wonder is tucked away in a remote section of the park, offering a sense of solitude and untouched beauty to those adventurous enough to undertake the journey. The falls cascade gracefully over rugged cliffs, creating a serene and picturesque landscape. Accessing Madrid Falls requires a bit of effort, including a hike through some of the park’s most stunning and diverse terrain, but the reward is a breathtaking view and the tranquility of one of the most secluded natural attractions in Texas. It’s an essential visit for those seeking to explore the wilder side of Texas’s natural beauty.

Cattail Falls in Big Bend National Park | Hidden within the arid landscapes of Big Bend National Park, Cattail Falls is a refreshing oasis that captures the hearts of all who discover it. This secluded waterfall is nestled at the end of a trail that meanders through diverse ecosystems, offering glimpses of the unique flora and fauna that inhabit the area. The trail’s culmination at Cattail Falls presents a stunning contrast to the surrounding desert scenery, with water

cascading over rocks into a clear, inviting pool below. Tranquility and natural beauty of the falls make it the perfect spot for contemplation and connection with nature. Though lesser-known and requiring a bit of a hike, Cattail Falls remains one of the most magical and rewarding experiences within Big Bend National Park.

Dolan Falls in Del Rio | Situated on the pristine Devil’s River, Dolan Falls stands as a captivating spectacle of natural beauty near Del Rio, Texas. With its waters gracefully streaming over layered limestone formations, Dolan Falls creates a mesmerizing visual and auditory experience for its visitors. As one of the most pristine river ecosystems in the state, the area around Dolan Falls offers a sanctuary for a diverse range of wildlife and an array of native plants, making it a prime spot for nature enthusiasts and photographers. Access to the falls is regulated to preserve its untouched beauty, ensuring that those who visit are treated to the rare sight of nature in its most unadulterated form. The trip to Dolan Falls, while requiring special permissions, promises an unforgettable experience blending adventure, tranquility, and the irreplaceable opportunity to connect with the wild heart of Texas. –

Waterfalls at Azteca Park in Laredo | A lesser known waterfall, but a gorgeous one to visit when you are in South Texas (yes, there are waterfalls you can hike to in South Texas). This short and flat hike is truly one of those less discovered gems. Make sure to go right after a rainfall for the best flow and cleanest water, as sadly trash does tend to collect in this area. And since I know people will ask, Laredo is one of the safest places in Texas and you have nothing to fear—even if it’s close to the border.

Boykin Springs in Angelina National Forest | Nestled within the lush confines of Angelina National Forest, Boykin Springs offers visitors a serene escape into nature. Known for its enchanting waterfall. The area is a haven for those seeking peace and natural beauty. Surrounded by towering pines and verdant foliage, the springs and its surrounding trails invite adventurers to explore the heart of East Texas wilderness.

Turner Falls in Davis, Oklahoma | While technically outside of Texas, Turner Falls is a popular destination for many Texans looking for an impressive waterfall experience, and I felt it had to be included as a relatively short drive from Dallas. As the largest waterfall in Oklahoma, it cascades 77 feet into a natural swimming pool, making it a favorite spot for both relaxation and recreation. The surrounding area, part of the Arbuckle Mountains, offers hiking trails, caves, and campsites, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of the great outdoors. With its breathtaking views and plethora of activities, Turner Falls is a must-visit for anyone craving an adventure in nature.

Visiting these waterfalls and hiking their surrounding trails have given me a profound appreciation for the diverse natural beauty in Texas. Each trail offers a unique experience—from the magical ambiance of Hamilton Pool Preserve to the rugged adventure of Gorman Falls. For anyone looking to explore the best hiking trails in Texas with the natural beauty of waterfalls, these spots surely promise memorable adventures in the great outdoors.

The dog is both an assistant to the student and part of the family. Consistency among family members plus the support of the entire family is a great advantage. Once the puppy is placed in the home, the student and puppy, and perhaps a co-handler, progress through the IDEA program as a team under the guidance of experienced trainers.

Maureen Bennett and retired co-founders Angela Ross and Sharon Owsley bring over 25 years of combined experience in service dog training to the program. The co-founders’ experience includes dog breeding and early puppy socialization, puppy raising for a nationally known assistance dog school, and graduation from programs where the disabled train their own service dog. Maureen has served on the board of directors for several non-profit organizations including assistance dog programs. She and many of their other board members and volun-

teers also have personal experience with the challenges of living with a disability. As the school has grown, they have been fortunate to continue to add to their allvolunteer staff. This group includes certified professional dog trainers, experts in both marketing and finance, information technology volunteers, and persons experienced in multiple areas of early puppy socialization and ongoing canine care. At their foundation, the founders of IDEA Service Dogs believe that many physically challenged people can achieve improved quality of life through the addition of a service dog.

THE PROGRAM

IDEA Service Dogs believes that a person with a disability and their service dog have a higher success rate when the dog is raised and trained in the home of the student. The dog is both an assistant to the student and also part of the family. Consistency among family members plus the support of the entire family is a great advantage. As the IDEA Service Dogs program has matured, they have found that the clients best served are those with needs including mobility, retrieval, and medical response for adults. This includes tasks such as bracing while

54 APRIL 2024 | SocietyLifeMag.com

walking and transferring, retrieval of articles and people for assistance/seizure response.

If you need a dog trained for tasks outside of this scope or for a child under age 18, please contact IDEA for a possible referral.

IDEA trains the disabled and their service dogs for:

• Mobility support such as for balance, transferring and wheelchair assistance

..........................................................................

• Retrieval of objects, opening and closing doors and cabinets, and other active task work

..........................................................................

• Retrieval of another person for assistance Seizure and medical event response

IDEA does not train for:

..........................................................................

• Psychiatric disabilities such as anxiety, depression, personality disorder and PTSD.

• Diabetic alert

• Children under age 18

• Autism and learning disabilities

• Guide dog tasks

• Hearing alert

Once the puppy is placed in the home, the student and puppy, and perhaps a cohandler, progress through IDEA’s unique program as a team under the guidance of experienced trainers. IDEA Service Dogs offers a different kind of Assistance Dog Training Program that takes approximately 18 to 24 months. The coursework includes:

• Attendance in small group classes on three Sundays per month.

..........................................................................

• Reading our proprietary training manual and several books.

• Internet submittal of homework.

• Utilization of videos and presentations by canine professionals.

• Hands-on training exercises.

• Field trips to many locations in the DFW area to expose the dog to a variety of environments.

Student Requirements

IDEA Service Dogs students must have good technology skills as they utilize many modern training tools including video and internet resources.

A family member or friend is encouraged to act as a co-handler/trainer for the team. One co-trainer maximum is permitted per student.

The team must be able to provide their own transportation to classes and field trips. Occasional field trips may require small entrance fees, such as to theaters, museums and other public locations.

Puppy Selection Assistance

IDEA will assist in selecting an appropriate puppy for the student’s needs including:

• Identifying the optimal breed, age, and size for the tasks to be trained.

..........................................................................

• Locating quality puppy breeders, with emphasis on early puppy enrichment activities.

..........................................................................

• Perform a multi-dimensional, well-researched and tested temperament test on puppies/dogs.

Note: A student may apply with a dog they already own, however IDEA staff must evaluate the dog for suitability prior to acceptance. The dog’s pedigree, age, health history and other factors may be considered.

Training Methods and Topics

IDEA staff will address topics such as puppyraising, positive and science-based training techniques, canine healthcare and nutrition and selection of training and assistance equipment. They provide guidance for their students about legal access issues and encourage them to educate the public about service dogs. Each student will learn how to teach and maintain the specials skills their dogs will use to improve their daily living.

IDEA Service Dogs Approach Advantages

..........................................................................

• The dog is owned by the student, and may remain with them after retirement.

• The student is taught the methods necessary to train a new skill if their needs change after graduation.

..........................................................................

• The student learns the skills to train a successor dog if/when one is necessary.

Milestones to Graduation

The student team must accomplish the following milestones in order to graduate from the IDEA Service Dogs program:

..........................................................................

• Attend classes with an excellent attendance record.

• Complete all reading assignments and homework.

• Participate in 14 or more instructor-led field trips.

..........................................................................

• Successfully pass Canine Good Citizen test as administered by IDEA trainers.

• Successfully pass the Public Access Test as administered by our trainers.

• Select and certify competence in three special skills, such as retrieval of objects or persons, opening and closing doors, bracing while walking or transferring, alerting to a medical event, or other activities of assistance required by the student’s disabilities.

Program Fees

Initial start-up fee: A one-time initial startup fee of $300 is assessed to help cover puppy evaluation, both proprietary and published training materials, and selected initial equipment. Monthly fees: A small monthly fee of $50 is also assessed for each month that classes are held. Students are also responsible for the costs of dog purchase and care.

All-Volunteer Organization

IDEA Service Dogs is grateful to the many volunteers who also assist the school in so many areas, including: dog training and handling, graphic arts, fundraising and many other skills. The truth is that they really could not do it without all of the volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact them for more information.

ART IN THE SQUARE BY MARY MACDOWELL

ART IN THE SQUARE

produced by Southlake Women’s Club

Southlake Town Square is about to encounter an Art Attack as Art Walkers transform this charming shopping haven into a vibrant hub of artistic exploration. The 24th annual awardwinning celebration, Art in the Square, is a creative and immersive experience for all ages, inviting everyone to revel in a weekend of imagination and inspiration. Held on April 26-28, Art in the Square is a three-day juried fine art festival produced by the Southlake Women’s Club (SWC) and presented by Methodist Southlake Medical Center. The event creates a perfect venue for visitors to interact with over 150 artists, including emerging and aspiring high school artists. This year’s featured artist and 2024 People’s Choice Winner is 2D mixed media artist Bethany Klein from Fort Worth—her passion for nature and animals is interpreted into dream-like imaginations she had as a child.

The jury also selects artwork for the logo that represents this year’s festival. SWC was proud to present David Palmer from Los Angeles featuring his cosmic moonwalker as 2024’s Art in the Square theme. In addition to all the incredible art, there will also be a genre of musical talent featuring a tremendous lineup of musicians and performing artists on two stages all weekend long. On the Methodist Southlake main stage, catch performances from some of the hottest acts—with styles ranging from Jazz, Pop, Classic Rock and Country. This year’s Saturday night headliner is Free Fallin The Tom Petty Concert Experience. The Texas Health gazebo stage features local talent and family entertainment. This year, you will see jazz, dance, performing arts, the Southlake Community Band, and more.

On top of all that, there will be great food of all flavors and adult beverages, a fun zone for teens and ‘tweens, and a younger children’s area sure to delight kids and parents. Founded in April 2000 by the Southlake Women’s Club, Art in the Square is nationally ranked as the #4 juried art festival in the U.S. and has consistently been ranked in the top ten for over 12 years. Art in The Square has risen to be a nationally-ranked fine arts event. Nearly 700 local, national, and internationally renowned artists applied for the approximately 150 available spots. None of this could be done without the support of their generous sponsors. In recognition of their support, sponsors will be highlighted on digital billboards, social media, websites, and digital/print ads. All proceeds from this event are donated to local charities benefiting women, children and families. To date, SWC has dispersed over $3.3M in funds in the last 20+ years. The Southlake Women’s Club is committed to giving the community another successful festival for everyone involved. Join the Southlake Women’s Club April 26-28, 2024 in Southlake Town Square for an unforgettable celebration! –

• Molly Odom Magill Art Exhibit at Galleria Dallas

• One of Galleria Dallas’ priorities is sharing the local arts community with its shoppers. For its first Artist Collective exhibit of 2024, the center will display landscape paintings by Dallas-based artist Molly Odom Magill. The painter and mixed-media installation artist,

who hails from West Texas, comes from a long line of artists, writers and musicians, which led her to explore her creativity from an early age. Magill’s landscape paintings have been seen in shows across the state and her work fills the walls of Genesis Women’s Shelter in Dallas. Magill’s paintings are rooted in place, an exploration of how our surroundings, particularly the geography, shape us. For Magill, place means Texas and its myriad landscapes and people, beauty and contradictions. Her work seeks to remind us how each place, each moment, makes up a landscape, a life. All are linked and layered to tell our story. The free art exhibit at Galleria Dallas can be viewed on Level 1 in the Art Window next

to Tommy Bahama through April 23. “The bold colors and shapes found in Molly’s works evoke the varied landscapes of our home state,” said Galleria Dallas Director of Marketing Megan Townsend. “We’re excited to share her voice with our shoppers this spring.” The Molly Odom Magill exhibit at Galleria Dallas is on display now through April 23rd. Galleria Dallas is located at 13350 Dallas Parkway in Dallas 75240. For more info, visit: galleriadallas.com

Run Roses

The 150th running of the Kentucky Derby is the first Saturday in May. If you aren’t going, celebrate in style at home with these ideas.

I’ve always had a love for big hats, bourbon, and horses so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that I love watching the Kentucky Derby. It’s the one day a year when the rest of the nation loves horses as much as I do! It’s a celebration of the South and gentile glamour. Here’s how I hosted my Kentucky Derby dinner party.

KENTUCKY DERBY MENU:

• Mint Juleps (of course!)

• Bacon and Chive Deviled Eggs

Southern food is a must for any Derby Party. I served decadent chicken and waffles for the main course so I started light with deviled eggs as an appetizer. And for dessert? I turned my love of mint juleps into a brownie!

• Chicken and Waffles with Pimento Cheese and served with Bourbon Maple Syrup

• Mint Julep Brownies

Key elements for a great Kentucky Derby Party:

• Bourbon (in as many forms as possible)

• Red roses

• Southern food

• Mint juleps

• Fabulous hats

• Chic outfits

• Fun photo ops

And the Derby on TV, of course! Just because you want to watch the Derby doesn’t mean you can’t make it a garden party. Floppy hats and fabulous outfits just scream garden party. Serve your first course outside, watch the best two minutes in sports, then discuss the race during dinner.

Bacon and Chive Deviled Eggs

INGREDIENTS

6 large eggs, hard boiled

3 Tbsp plain Greek yogurt

1 tsp champagne vinegar

1 tsp Dijon mustard

Salt and pepper, to taste

1 Tbsp finely chopped chives

2 strips thick-cut bacon, cooked and crumbled Paprika for garnish

(1) Carefully peel hard boiled eggs and slice in half lengthwise. Scoop out yolk and mix with yogurt, champagne vinegar, Dijon mustard, and salt and pepper. Spoon back into egg whites or spoon mixture into a piping bag and pipe back into egg whites. Sprinkle with paprika, chives, and bacon.

Pro tip: Buy eggs a week before you want to make deviled eggs. Fresh eggs are absolutely impossible to peel. Carefully set eggs in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Place pan on stove and bring to a boil. When water begins to boil, cover pan with lid and remove from heat. Set a timer for 22 minutes. Prepare ice bath by filling a medium sized bowl with ice and water. Right when the timer goes off, remove eggs from saucepan with a slotted spoon and plunge into ice bath. Let sit in ice bath for about 15 minutes, then remove and refrigerate or turn into deviled eggs!

Chicken and Waffles with Pimento Cheese and Bourbon Maple Syrup

SL Run Roses

BELGIAN WAFFLES - INGREDIENTS (makes 6 large waffles)

1 1/2 cups lukewarm milk

6 Tbsp butter, melted 3/4 tsp salt

2 large eggs

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 1/2 tsp instant yeast

(1) Combine ingredients in large bowl

Stir until combined. It’s okay if it’s lumpy.

(2) Cover with plastic wrap. Let rest at room temperature for 1 hour. Batter begins to bubble. Set bowl in fridge until dinner. ...........................................................

(2) Preheat your waffle iron. Spray with cooking spray (unless you have a nonstick waffle iron) Spoon batter onto iron, close the lid, bake for the recommended amount of time for your machine until the waffle is golden brown. Mine takes 5-6 minutes.

CHICKEN TENDERS - INGREDIENTS

Salt Dried oregano 1 egg

1 cup Panko breadcrumbs

Pimento cheese is a popular cheese spread in the South that usually consists of grated cheddar cheese, mayo, seasonings, and pimentos. You can easily make it yourself but we have an abundance of excellent pimento cheese options here in Texas.

1 lbs organic chicken tenders

1 cup buttermilk, low-fat 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

Vegetable oil for frying

(1) Rinse chicken tenders and pat dry. Place in a gallon ziplock bag and cover with buttermilk. Zip shut and refrigerate for at least 4 hours.

(2) Pull chicken out half an hour before you want to make the dish. (Never cook meat straight from the fridge!) When ready to make tenders, season flour with salt and oregano and put in a shallow dish. Pour Panko in a shallow dish. Crack an egg in a third shallow dish and beat lightly with a fork.

(3) Preheat electric skillet to 325 degrees. Pour just enough vegetable oil to cover the electric skillet. When hot, pull each tender out one at a time, allowing access buttermilk to drip off. Dredge in seasoned flour, then dip in egg (make sure all sides are coated), then cover with Panko breadcrumbs. (I like to set it in the Panko, press down slightly, then repeat on the other side.) Set in electric skillet and repeat with remaining tenders, working quickly.

(4) Cook about 4-5 minutes per side or until deeply golden.

BOURBON MAPLE SYRUP - INGREDIENTS

1 1/2 cups maple syrup 1/8 cup bourbon

(1) In a saucepan, heat maple syrup and bourbon over a low flame. Serve warm.

PREPARATION: Scoop a generous amount of pimento cheese on top of warm waffles. Stack two homemade chicken tenders on top. Drizzle with bourbon maple syrup. Sprinkle with chopped chives. Serve immediately. ...........................................................................................................

SL RunForTheRoses

You absolutely must serve mint juleps, darling. They’re as essential to a Kentucky Derby Party as horses are to a race! My mint julep has two ingredients: bourbon and a homemade mint simple syrup. Crushed ice and mint sprigs are all you need for an authentic mint julep. Bonus: the 1-4 ratio makes it easy to mix up a whole pitcher so you won’t be measuring all night long.

Mint Julep

INGREDIENTS

2 oz bourbon

1/2 oz mint simple syrup

3 mint sprigs

Finely crushed ice

(1) Fill mint julep glasses with crushed ice and a straw. Pour bourbon and simple syrup over ice. Garnish with mint sprig.

.......................................................................

MINT SIMPLE SYRUP - INGREDIENTS

2 cups sugar

2 cups water

1/2 cup fresh mint leaves

(1) Bring sugar, water, and mint leaves to a boil in a small sauce pan until sugar is completely dissolved. Cool and strain to remove the mint leaves.

.......................................................................

Pitcher: Pour 1 cup mint simple syrup and 4 cups bourbon into a pitcher. Then, add torn mint leaves and crushed ice.

.......................................................................

Mint Julep Brownies

2/3 cup dark cocoa powder

1 1/2 cups granulated sugar

1/2 cup powdered sugar

3/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

1/2 cup vegetable oil

1 1/2 Tbsp bourbon

1/16 tsp peppermint oil

3 large farm fresh eggs

Bourbon whipped cream (recipe link below)

Dark chocolate mint fudge sauce (recipe link below)

Mint sprigs, for garnish

(1) Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a 9″ x 9″ square metal pan. ..............................................................

(2) In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the dark cocoa powder, sugars, salt, flour, and chocolate chips.

(3) Add the vegetable oil, bourbon, eggs, and peppermint extract, mixing just until combined.

(4) Spoon the batter into prepared pan and bake the brownies and beginning checking for doneness at 20 to 25 minutes for the 9″ pan and 25 to 30 minutes for the 8″ pan. You want these really fudge-y so don’t over bake them! Pull out when a toothpick comes out clean. ....................................................................................

(5) Remove the brownies from the oven and let cool completely before cutting into rounds with a biscuit cutter. Pipe on bourbon whipped cream (recipe link on left) and drizzle with dark chocolate mint fudge sauce (recipe link on left) .

PINCH OF SALT

PASTRIES & COFFEE

GLUTEN-FREE & ALLERGY-FRIENDLY BAKERY

We all have memories of the pandemic. One of mine is my daughter’s very first birthday in March 2020. As an over planner, I picked a theme and bought pink flatware for 100 by February. And then the world shut down. I held out hope the quarantine thing was a 7-day deal, but as days drew closer, the size of gatherings allowed dwindled and my vendors dropped out. Determined for her party to be as normal as possible, a smash cake was non-negotiable. At the time my daughter had some dietary restrictions due to reflux. I didn’t trust myself to make it delicious, beautiful and dairy-free. I heard about a bakery specializing in dietary restrictions called Pinch of Salt Pastries with no store front... they didn’t even have a sign. You just had to know which metal door to knock on in a temporarily defunct sports complex. They were delighted to get my call and be a part of salvaging my daughter’s special day. I drove up, called the number and gluten-free dairy-free sweet and savory treats were brought out to my car. I could barely describe to you the four cakes that have come after that cake – but the image of that one is forever burned in my mind.

For 9 years, Pinch of Salt Pastries has proven delicious treats can be enjoyed by everyone. Abby Dumont, creator and owner, and her all-female team bring creativity to classic desserts and makes them enjoyable by all. Pinch of Salt’s pastries and kitchen are all 100% gluten-free and wheat-free. Special dietary modifications available are: dairy-free, vegan, soy-free, paleo and nut-sensitive. They have come a long way from that hidden metal door in Southlake and now boast a gorgeous storefront next to Stacy’s Furniture in Grapevine. Pinch of Salt Pastries and Coffee offers patrons delectable treats set against a cozy midcentury modern

backdrop. At the door, you’re greeted by an irresistible aroma of fresh baked goods and coffee wafting through the air. It’s a perfect blend of chic-comfort making it great for meeting friends or hosting an intimate business meeting.

The menu is a treasure trove of sweet and savory gluten-free delights capable of satisfying every palate. Whether you’re craving a flaky croissant, a decadent chocolate chip cookie, or a savory sausage roll, you’ll find something to tempt taste buds. Vegan options are also available, ensuring everyone can indulge. One of the bakery’s most popular items is their signature cinnamon rolls. Baked to perfection then topped with cream cheese frosting, these heavenly treats are a must-try for any visitor. You might tell yourself you’re only going to have half of this behemoth, but it takes some serious willpower not to devour the whole thing—especially when paired with a fresh cup of coffee. Each bite is a perfect balance of spice and sweetness.

Even though my family is now free of dietary restrictions, I still indulge in Pinch of Salt’s treats over conventional gluten-filled treats. Why? One of the bakery’s standout features is its commitment to using high-quality, locally sourced ingredients. From farm-fresh eggs to artisanal gluten-free flour, every component of creations is carefully selected to ensure exceptional taste and texture. Dedication to quality shines in each bite—making every pastry a true delight. Pinch of Salt is more than a place to satisfy your sweet tooth—it’s a destination where community, quality and creativity come together in perfect harmony. Stop in for a quick treat or linger over coffee with friends—each visit to this charming bakery is sure to leave you craving more!
