Everyone knows that home is more than just bricks and mortar. It is the epicenter of our lives and what defines home for each of us varies as much as we do. Home should be a place where we are free to be ourselves, where we find acceptance, love, and warmth. From well-known sayings like, “There’s no place like home,” “Home sweet home,” and “Home is where the heart is,” we surmise that home should be a happy place. This is the mission and purpose for one local charity I am proud to support—CASA of Tarrant County (Court Appointed Special Advocates). It’s a special organization of volunteer advocates who stand up on behalf of abused and neglected children. They aim to provide a CASA volunteer to every child who needs one—and they do so through fundraisers like the upcoming CASA Kids on Canvas (see article starting on page 68). By raising a voice against the unspeakable and speaking up for a child, they help find a happy home where love and warmth are the foundation for their future success. Both the child and their advocate are fulfilled by this bond. In a world filled with uncertainty and challenges, home should provide us with a stable anchor. It is a shelter from the storms of life, a place where we can let our guard down, and a fortress that shields us from the outside world. Home fosters personal growth. It’s the space where we dream, explore, and evolve. Whether it’s a quiet corner for reading, a kitchen where we experiment with recipes, or a backyard where we tend to a garden, or spend quality time with friends and family— our homes facilitate our passions and hobbies, nurturing our intellectual and creative sides. Learn how to make the most of your home and add value to your investment (Home Upgrades page 19). We forge bonds within its walls. Home is where families are formed and strengthened, where children take their first steps, where we celebrate milestones and holidays, and where we lean on each other during tough times. Home is the backdrop to the stories of our lives. The pandemic has made us appreciate home again, and it’s become a symbol of resilience and adaptability.
As we welcome autumn with gratitude for the cooler weather, and the warmth and comfort of home—I will be looking forward to entertaining season (see Hostess with the Mostess page 34). Let us remember that the power of home is deeply intertwined with the love and care we invest in it and the relationships we foster within its confines.
We hope you enjoy our 17th annual Fall Home issue, and may your home continue to be a source of strength, joy, and inspiration for you and yours.
ELENA ELLIS Publisher / Editorial Directorelena@societylifemagazine.com
Fall represents a season of change. It is a moment we equate with calming colors, coziness and comfort—when green leaves evolve into beautiful hues of red, yellow, and orange. And although seasons change, the atmosphere of our homes should remain the same—pleasant, peaceful and polished. Most people have well-worded doormats that greet guests as they approach the front door. What awaits them upon entering the house is unknown. Will they feel the welcoming warmth of a gentle soul? Are they entering a home where the Holy Spirit resides? Or…are they being ushered into Hell’s Kitchen?
We all know someone whose home is merely a showcase—a place to display their valuables, or where enjoyment is forbidden. Guests are only allowed to “look, but don’t touch.” The owner seems more concerned about the fingerprints on the mirror than the footprints walking through the door. It’s difficult to relax around untouchable items and safeguarded sofas. I imagine the only song played in the house is MC Hammer’s “Can’t Touch This” (Luke 12:15). LOL.
On the opposite end, there are people that see their homes as a refuge—a dwelling place for God, where the spirit of hospitality is freely ushered in. An abode where family, friends, and even strangers, can enjoy a beautifully fall-themed home embellished with earth tones, wreaths, and pumpkin-scented candles. Where hot chocolate is served, and lattes are plentiful. Now that is living!
BY TRISHA MITCHELLMany of us are familiar with the TV show “House Hunters.” In numerous episodes, couples are looking for a larger home, convinced they need more space. It’s baffling— because they actually have plenty of space! All they need to do is declutter, thereon appreciating what they already have. Luke 16:10 explains that those of us who are faithful with little, will also be faithful with much. Meaning, God will bless us with more when we show Him our handling of what He has already given us.
Recently, I came across a quote by Fiona Apple. It read, “Home is where my habits have a habitat.” Immediately, I was reminded of the women’s dressing rooms at the department store. Have you ever entered a women’s dressing room, and witnessed clothes thrown all over the floor? I have—more times than I’d like to remember. The first thought that always comes to mind is, “I wonder what the inside of their house looks like?”
It’s pitiful when people disregard a store’s property by tossing merchandise on the floor rather than placing it back on the hanger. But perhaps it’s what they are accustomed to: disorder, disarray, disrespect and disaster. Unbeknownst to them, Jesus takes this type of behavior personally (Matthew 25:40). Lailah Gifty Akita said, “When your environment is clean, you feel happy, motivated and healthy.” I agree. It’s much more enjoyable trying on clothes when we don’t have to hang up what someone else left on the floor.
As Believers, our homes should not only “appear” peaceful. Rather, the presence of
God should be felt upon entry. Perceiving the smell of pumpkin spice is nice, but discerning a Divine autumnal atmosphere is better (Ephesians 5:2). I’ve visited homes wherein the walls were adorned with all types of scripture and crosses. Yet chaos and commotion were rampant between the studs. The Spirit of the Lord was not in the place—He is not comfortable in homes that lack hospitality and warmth. Neither am I.
God gathers in rooms full of love, laughter, and possibly, neatly laundered closets. So… the next time you’re trying on clothes in a dressing room, remember to place them back on the hangers… tidily. (1 Corinthians 14:40). The store security is watching you, but God is surveying you as well (Proverbs 15:3). In 1 Corinthians 14:33, we learn that “God is a God of order.” And since He is our example, it is our responsibility to maintain a sense of order in every aspect of our lives. 1 Corinthians 2:10 expresses that the Spirit searches diligently, exploring and examining everything. I believe our closets are included.
As we approach a new season, may we keep a pleasing aroma in every room of our homes and hearts, so that others sense God’s presence and look forward to visiting (2 Corinthians 2:15).
Y’all be blessed!
“Peace, like charity, begins at home.”

Isabelle, the main character of LM Berthiaume’s novel “Defining Me,” seems to have the perfect life including delightful children Mila and Jake and a gorgeous home in San Francisco. Her hot, but often distracted, husband Chris works for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and travels regularly. Isabelle doesn’t know much about what he does, but she is wrapped up in her own business, a travel company for which she regularly visits the world’s most fascinating destinations. While traveling she sometimes runs into her first love Alex Hastings. He still makes her heart beat faster, but she tries to discourage him and stay true to her marriage.
Then the COVID pandemic hits. Isabelle’s business takes a dive, of course, because no one can travel, including her. Her life is reduced to refereeing fights between the kids, supervising virtual school and having outdoor, six-feetdistant tell-alls with her neighborhood friends. Soon she is awash in alcohol, unable to tell whether it’s a day the kids need to be online for school or the weekend. As tensions build between Isabelle and Chris, they agree to “take a break.” She decides to take Mila and Jake to visit her mom in Texas. Isabelle grew up in the Dallas area. Luckily mom has a home to accommodate all of
them, a nice cool swimming pool and is thrilled to spend time with her grandchildren. Isabelle enjoys reconnecting with high school friends. She starts to get her drinking under control. Jackson, her mom’s hired man, feeds her healthy food and she starts to recover. There are hints about Jackson and mom’s relationship, but nothing is ever confirmed.
Then Alex starts showing up, trying to win Isabelle back. And Chris also arrives unannounced. Tensions increase and Isabelle swings back and forth, trying to figure out who she really is and where her loyalties lie. This struggle takes up most of the book. When the crisis occurs, it’s a big one. Secrets about Isabelle’s late dad as well as a relationship between Chris and Alex are revealed. Violence enters the picture. Isabelle finds herself in places she never expected to be. Will Isabelle find the courage to choose her true love? Will she come to understand who loves her and who doesn’t? Will she discover who she is and what she really wants? The final few pages reveal her answers.
Some things to be aware of: This story includes gallons and gallons of alcohol for adults as well as teenagers. Teenage sex also plays a part. Beware of four letter words that regularly pepper the dialogue.
This book was recognized as a winner in the 2023 Beach Book Festival with an Honorable Mention in Romance

Taste Project’s nonprofit restaurant, Taste Community Restaurant, earned a place in Yelp’s Top 100 Places to Eat in Texas once again! With nearly 50,000 restaurants across Texas, it’s hard to decide where to eat. Annually, Yelp selects the top 100 must-try dining experiences. Coming in at #40, is Fort Worth’s Taste Community. Founder Jeff Williams, says, “I hope the recognition from our Yelp community allows even more people to ‘taste and see the Lord is good’ here at Taste Community Restaurant.” Jeff grew up in a family of four, and both parents worked hard to put food on the table. He remembers times when food was scarce, and his parents would skip meals to make sure he and his sister were full. Jeff knows first-hand the stress his parents encountered to make sure they had enough to eat. This is a familiar story for many of our neighbors. Taste’s menu has no prices. Guests are asked to: Pay what you can afford; what you’d typically pay; or what you would typically pay, plus a little extra to help a neighbor in need. Taste is a great place for a good cause.

In the blazing heat of a Texan summer, a spectacular event unfolded—the 30th-anniversary celebration of the Solar Car Challenge. This thrilling cross-country race took the student-built solar-powered vehicles on an epic journey from Fort Worth to El Paso. Dr. Lehman Marks, the mastermind behind the challenge, had a brilliant vision to ignite the love of science, technology, engineering, and math in young minds by connecting it with a solar car they design, build, and compete. Among this year's spirited contenders was the Covenant Christian Academy Solar Car Team, a group of enthusiastic students ready to take on the solar-powered adventure with a passion for hands-on engineering. Their project allowed them to design, build, and race their very own solar electric vehicle, competing against schools from all over the United States and sometimes even internationally. This collaborative team environment has nurtured their skills in project management, engineering, fabrication, testing, and competitive racing.
The team has competed in six Solar Car Challenges— four track races at Texas Motor Speedway and two crosscountry races. Over three years, the CCA Solar Car Team has won more division championships in the Solar Car Challenge than any other school in the nation. Driving their solar car, Cougar Spirit, they courageously covered 440.3 miles of the available 490.3-mile race route, fueled solely by the blazing Texas and New Mexico sunshine.
As the sun has set on the 2023 Solar Car Challenge, the CCA Solar Car Team is already gearing up to defend their division title in the 2024 Solar Car Challenge, which will again be a closed course race at Texas Motor Speedway. For students seeking adventure and dreaming of engineering, science and technology careers, Covenant Christian Academy offers the perfect opportunity to be a part of this dynamic solar car team, which leverages CCA’s strong college preparatory curriculum and affords opportunities to also be involved in award winning sports and arts offerings. So, if you have the drive to make history, contact the CCA Admissions.

From simple do-it-yourself projects to calling in the pros, we’ve gathered some tips for getting that bang-for-your-buck when it comes to what upgrades you choose to add to your home.
inspired living
A fresh coat of paint will lead to more competitive offers. The significant ROI you can expect from a fresh coat of paint on your home’s interior and exterior is an average $4,000 increase in your home’s value. This means a 107% ROI for new interior painting and a 55% ROI for exterior paint. You want to leave a fresh impression, but color choice does matter. Experts we spoke with all suggest warm neutral colors — like beige, tan, gold, gray and greige (a blend of gray and beige).
Whether you are selling your home soon, or plan on staying for decades, the value of the home will increase with a remodeled kitchen. Real estate agents often say, “kitchens sell houses.” We find this statement very true since kitchens are usually the heart and soul of the house. On average, a 70% or 80% ROI (return on investment) for kitchen renos is a commonly quoted figure. That makes a new kitchen a viable investment!
Did you know that a bathroom remodel can benefit your home's value more than other remodeling projects? It's true! A midrange (or average) bathroom remodel has a national average return on investment (ROI) of 72.7%. And we’ve all heard that kitchens and baths sell houses so that’s a great place to put your money when upgrading your home.
Purchasing new appliances can potentially add value to your home. Making changes to your kitchen such as appliances, flooring, countertops can increase its value by 3-7%. Luxury appliances are going to provide the highest return rate. Appliances typically deliver an ROI of 60%-80%. For homes that are long term, you won't need to replace the appliances every few years, if at all.
Average return on upgrading your landscaping is 100 percent. But where do you start? This is a good time to call in the pros so they can design a custom landscape that fits your property. A charming focal point like a walkway and fountain adds major value to your property. Boosting your home’s curb appeal with a new landscape design is always a winner.
A nice-looking exterior and landscaping reflect positively on the owners — indicating they take pride in their property. Plus, homes with great curb appeal sell for about 7% more, according to Realtor Magazine, than similar houses with less attractive exteriors. Cleaning up the landscaping, exterior paint, powerwashing the exterior/siding, and washing windows are all suggested to raise the value and the appeal from the curb.
Some homebuyers are detered from purchasing a home with a fireplace because they have safety concerns with children and/or pets. According to real estate experts, gas fireplaces are one of the top 10 features with the highest sale-to-list ratio. When you add a beautiful set of custom fireplace doors with screen or glass to fit your home’s style it adds to both the value and safety of your home.
You better believe having a fireplace can add value to your home, but an outdated one can really hurt your home value. Modernizing the hearth, mantle and surround style will help you add value and sell faster. On the downside, adding a fireplace in a new build is costly, so it is a personal choice to add one or not. However, if your home has one that is showing what decade it’s from—updating it to reflect today’s decor sensibilities will prove to be a wise investment.
Outdoor spaces are no longer just a place to hang out during downtime. They have become productive as more people are working and learning from home. Outdoor spaces have grown up and can now handle a multitude of tasks—from a video call, study session, movie night or exercise studio. These outdoor spaces are being asked to multitask as much as indoor spaces.
Privacy is also an increasing priority— the more private the spaces, the more desirable they are for homebuyers. This is being addressed by sheltered side yards, careful window placement and covered patios. Trends show that most homeowners prefer a larger, private backyard space when space planning. Adding outdoor rooms also makes the value increase and the liveable area.
Outdoor kitchens are popular additions, and most experts estimate that homeowners with kitchens in their outdoor living spaces will break even on the investment when selling their homes. According to the home experts we asked, homes with outdoor kitchens can potentially see an ROI between 100% and 200%.
The focal point of any bathroom is the shower and/or tub, so it should come as no surprise that remodeling them offers the highest ROI. If you’re upgrading your master bathroom, replacing your tub with a large walkin shower can raise your home’s value. Using quality materials like frameless glass enclosures, upgraded shower heads and tile will add value to your home.
The staircase is often a focal point in many North Texas homes, and much like an outdated fireplace design, a staircase that screams 1980 is also a problem. Staircase upgrades from baluster/spindle replacements to a complete overhaul including risers, handrails/Banister, and a modern style will bring your home up-to-date and bring a return on the investment.
Designers know how to increase the value—from increasing curb appeal, updating your flooring, or choosing the best paint colors to sell your house, an interior designer will give you the best tips to elevate your space and know which updates are worth the investment. They also know how to stage a home to show the best placement for furniture so the flow of your home makes sense and optimizes the floorplan best.
Real estate experts agree that an open layout can increase the resale value of your home. In fact, some houses sell for as much as 15% more than sectional floor plans. And if the work is good, homeowners can make an even bigger profit. Taking down a few walls — especially if they are not load-bearing — makes the space feel larger and is a desirable floorplan for those looking to sell their home.
IF THERE’S ONE WORD THAT DESCRIBES NORTH TEXAS WEATHER, IT’S EXTREME. Scorching summers, bitter winters, periods of relentless precipitation followed by long dry spells — it’s a wonder plants survive here at all. But for over 34 years, James Landscaping, Inc. has been working wonders for homeowners. With their expertise and passion for creating lush, vibrant landscapes, this local landscape company has built an impressive legacy by delivering results that meet the unique demands of our region. Case in point, this month’s beautiful featured property was transformed from a conventional grass lawn into something extraordinary. The homeowners, who’ve been loyal James Landscaping clients for years, entrusted them with their dream of a low maintenance, resource-efficient and aesthetically pleasing landscape.
“Together with the homeowners, we made some thoughtful and creative choices with the hardscape, including a carefully installed circular driveway and dry creek bed that helps carry water away from the property while adding visual interest,” explained Rhonda James, James Landscaping, Inc. founder. “We even created a stone mailbox that ties into the new hardscape, including a flagstone walkway for easy access to the mailbox.” As skilled as they are with hard-
scapes, James Landscaping has truly mastered the art and science of plant selection. They fulfilled the homeowners’ wish of replacing their ordinary grass lawn with a low maintenance, but mesmerizing landscape. Not only does it look aesthetically pleasing, but it also serves as a sustainable haven for the homeowners and the environment. They installed native and highly adapted plants that require less water and enhance the overall resilience of the landscape. This
includes perennials that bloom at different times of the year to display a variety of seasonal color punches. The homeowners also requested plants that attract pollinators, and they delivered. “You’ll see Lantanas and various Sage plants that the butterflies love, Catmint to attract bees, Turk’s Cap to attract hummingbirds and much more. These plants support a healthy ecosystem for vital pollinators while adding lushness and variety to the landscape,” said Rhonda.
“For over a decade, we have done business with James Landscaping, Inc. They are true professionals in every aspect of their business. Their ideas are creative and their workmanship is meticulous. If you want it done right the first time, we highly recommend James Landscaping, Inc.” — Mike & Judy Parrish
Once design and installation are finished, the team enters a critical phase of a project—maintenance. Even the most innovative and sustainable designs require regular upkeep. Here, too, James Landscaping excels, gaining a solid reputation for its top-notch horticultural services that help clients get the most out of their investment while nurturing plants that not only survive, but thrive in the face of North Texas’ challenging climate. This begins with organic fertilization, customized to the specific needs of each property. James Landscaping accounts for the soil composition and plant varieties on site, then tailor nutrient-rich blends that promote healthy growth and vibrant blooms. This bespoke approach ensures that every plant receives the exact nourishment it requires—leading to more robust and resilient greenery.
They also provide weeding and trimming services that go beyond mere aesthetics. Their skilled and experienced crews can prevent the proliferation of unwanted pests and diseases, while preparing plants from season to season to better withstand climatic shifts. Additionally, mulching services play a crucial role in conserving moisture and regulating soil temperatures. In a climate where water is often a precious resource, sprinkler systems play a vital role in maintaining a healthy landscape. James Landscaping, Inc. understands this importance and offers comprehensive sprinkler inspection services. By identifying leaks, inefficiencies, or blockages, their experts ensure that water is distributed precisely where it is needed most, reducing waste and promoting plant health. The dedication of James Landscaping, Inc. extends to the night hours as well. Recognizing the significance of landscape lighting, they offer routine checks and maintenance to illuminate the beauty of the outdoors after dark. Properly lit landscapes not only provide an inviting ambiance, but can also deter unwanted visitors and enhance overall security. (continued)
Delivering this level of service to clients requires both experience and passion. In these respects, James Landscaping stands apart from all the rest. Many of its team members have been with the company for over two decades. This longevity and continuous commitment to excellence ensures that every project is handled with care and expertise. “Our crews are proud of the work they do, and it shows. Clients
are constantly raving about how hardworking, polite and mindful they are. They fully embrace our company’s culture of excellence,” admits Rhonda. Each member of the team has played a significant role in the company’s 34 years of business.
This experience, along with their suite of horticultural services, also gives them the added advantage of being able to come
back to their clients’ properties to assess which plants survive and thrive season after season—and also which ones are struggling. This on-the-ground analysis builds on their already considerable knowledge base and gives them an even greater mastery of the idiosyncratic growing region found here in our North Texas communities. Their meticulously planned landscapes are designed to last.
Over time, the transformative impact of James Landscaping's services becomes evident. The landscapes they create become living testaments to the harmonious relationship between nature and expert horticultural knowledge. In a region where landscaping often feels like a battle against the elements, James Landscaping offers a refreshing approach that embraces local challenges and turns them into opportunities. By focusing on the health and vitality of each plant, they have earned the trust and admiration of homeowners who wish to create beautiful outdoor spaces that flourish year-round, and year-after-year.

In this issue of Society Life’s Mom’s column, we asked local realtor, Kim Bedwell, to answer 20 questions about her experiences both in becoming and being a mom. Kim has two children: Cole 19 and Addison 16. Kim lives with her husband, Chad and their children in Southlake. Here’s what she had to say…
SOCIETY LIFE: What’s one of your earliest memories you have of your Mom? KIM BEDWELL: My mom was an excellent seamstress, and she made matching dresses for us to wear. I remember the first matching ‘mommy and me’ outfit when I was three years old.
SL: What is something you thought about Motherhood that was totally wrong? KB: I think we all worry about doing it wrong or our children not hitting milestones when they are supposed to when they are young. We find ourselves in the comparison game when our children are little and you quickly realize your child will hit the development milestone when they are ready.
SL: What’s something you always wanted to do but didn’t... and why didn’t you? KB: Looking back, I wish my parents would have exposed me to more colleges and career paths. I loved being a teacher for a brief period, but have an entrepreneurial spirit that I wish I had discovered earlier in life.
SL: Was there something your Mom did when you were a kid that you swore you’d never do as a parent? KB: Absolutely. My mother would not share make-up with me or clothes. I never understood it. When my daughter was little and would get into my makeup and lotions, I would let her. To me this was endearing, and she wanted to be like me. To this day I always let her borrow my clothes, shoes or make-up. I love how this simple act creates an opportunity for me to connect with her on her level.
SL: What did you think you wanted to be when you grew up? KB: Ha. Early on I wanted to be a truck driver and drive an 18-wheeler across the country. And even now, I have great respect for the men and women who drive big trucks—transporting all the things that make the world go round.
SL: What’s the best family vacation you’ve ever taken? KB: We recently did a 10-day trip to Disney with our immediate family. There were eight of us. I carefully planned out matching t-shirts for each day of the trip. No one was thrilled with this idea prior to our arrival at Disney but at the end of it all everyone had great fun with it. It was a conversation starter with so many other
park guests. The best shirt was the day all the guys wore a shirt that said, “Lets all wear matching shirts—said no man ever.” People took photos and made comments about them all day. It was so fun!
SL: How have your notions of what it means to be a Mom changed over your lifetime? KB: I feel my role as a mother continues to evolve as my children get older and as their needs change. I have to pivot to give them the support they need in each chapter of their lives.
SL: Is there a moment or event that radically changed the way you saw Motherhood? KB: My daughter was born with a hearing loss. This changed me. She was diagnosed at two months old and fitted for her first hearing aids at three months. I knew then I was chosen by God to pour into Addison and research all the auditory resources and specialists she needed for the first four years or so of her life. She is an amazing 16-year-old now and no one can even tell she has a hearing loss. We continue to make sure she has the very best technology and resources available.
SL: When did you know you were ready to have kids? KB: I didn’t ever really know I was ready. I’m not sure any of us are ever really ready, but when it happens your maternal instincts take over. It is the greatest accomplishment I will ever achieve.
SL: What’s your favorite photo of your family or kids? KB: There is a photo from a few years ago with us in a field including our dog Bentley. Chad and I divorced in 2010 and reconciled at the end of 2018. This was the first photo of us all together as one family in 2018 since the kids were young. It will always be a special reminder of God’s grace and healing for our family.
SL: What was the first year of motherhood like for you? KB: People always commented that I was a very calm first-time mom. I loved having my son. He was my sidekick. I didn’t work when he was born and cherished all my adventures with him.
SL: What do you want or wish most for your kids? KB: For them to be fulfilled by God, and to know they are loved unconditionally from their father and me.
SL: What are some of your biggest struggles as a Mom? KB: The should’ve,
could’ve, would’ve thoughts creep up on me more than I want to admit. I think it’s natural as a mother. With my son off at his first year of college, I frequently thought about if he was prepared and sometimes questioned what mistakes I might have made along the way. Or turning my daughter loose to drive this past year. All big milestones happening for them both and I pray they are prepared.
SL: What would your perfect day off be like? Describe it. KB: A spa day including a massage and facial, with a nice nap and someone manning my cell phone so I would not have to be interrupted.
SL: What’s the one song that means the most to you? KB: ‘God Bless the USA’ by Lee Greenwood. This song gets me every time. So many sacrifices were made by our Veterans and current military to gain and protect our freedoms. I am not sure we reflect enough on history to appreciate what we have here in America.
SL: What advice would you give to your younger self about Motherhood? KB: I would tell myself to do the best you can and always seek knowledge from the moms in your life who have gone before you. I love having some very special women in my life who are older and share with me the things to come with my kids.
SL: Is there a quote, saying, words of advice or scripture you consider words to live by? KB: Three come to mind: What you focus on expands. If you don’t ask, the answer is no. And finally... Consistency compounds.
SL: If you could share a meal with any woman past, present or future who would it be? Why? KB: Princess Diana. I want to ask her how she gained the courage to stand up for what she believed in. And how she chose to be a trailblazer in the face of a system that wanted her to fit the mold.
SL: What Mom from real-life or even TV/movies do you admire most? KB: Martha Stewart. She built an empire. They tried to take her down and threw her in jail. Most men would have had to pay a fine. She said no worries I will come back stronger and better. I loved how she picked herself back up and kept fighting.
SL: At the end of a long day, what do you do for fun or relaxation? KB: I really enjoy going on walks at the end of the day with my husband. It’s a great way for me to decompress from the day and catch up. I have also recently taken to pickleball and even have a court setup on our driveway.
Self consciousness goes out the window when you’re the parent of young child. Out shopping in your track pants and pajama top? No worries. Snot or spit-up on your suit in a Zoom meeting? No biggie. No shower for the second day in a row? Tomorrow is a new day. But sometimes a situation unfolds that leaves you so mortified your life changes at that very moment. For me, it happened at our community pool with my son.
My son loves swimming (or splashing really) and our trip to the local community pool began just like any other. We had recently started potty training like a duck to water, but I still persuaded him to wear a swim diaper under his swimsuit. This was a safety net in case any accidents reared their ugly head. A few minutes in, I (and the other parents and children in the family section of the pool) realized how imperfect those swim diapers really were.
Anyone who has watched, in cringeworthy horror, the infamous Caddyshack movie ‘Chocolate bar in the pool’ scene can perhaps feel some empathy. I can see the wide-eyed panic in the eyes of my twoyear-old boy. And, his panic is contagious! I too immediately become red-faced as a widening circle of floating brown particles surround us in the public pool we were happily playing in moments before.
Now, the fun is definitely over—this is a code-red situation every parent dreads when out in public with their little ones. And this code-red is actually a code-brown. It felt like it unfolded in slow motion. But, unlike that fictional incident from the 1980 comedy classic, it wasn’t a single, chunky log that was floating in the water, more a widening circle of murky brown flecks expanding around us. My heart rate skyrocketed as what was unfolding dawned on me. Collective panic grew as the brown ring encircling us continued to expand.
I locked eyes with an open-mouthed and disgusted mother a few feet away as I scrambled to the pool’s edge. All I could say to her was a shame-filled matter-of-fact “I’ve got a situation here—please get out and tell everyone else to get out, too. And please let the lifeguards know.”
With that, I left the messy carnage behind me, scooping up my son in one arm—a brown and yellow trail still trickling down his legs—and dashed as quickly as I could to the pool’s only joint family/disabled bathroom stall. All the while still trying to reassure my young son he hadn’t done anything wrong so he didn’t feel any sense of shame. I didn’t have the inclination to look back at the destruction we’d caused. But that wasn’t when the horror ended.
Inside the dual-purpose stall, I tried my best to calmly, but efficiently strip my boy down without smearing last night’s dinner anywhere further than it already had. Stretchy shower hose in hand, I valiantly tried to clean things up, but in my toddler’s eyes, it was a fun new game! I’d aim the hose at him and he’d shoot to the left. Then to the right. Then in between my legs—all with a slippery floor underfoot and mucky swim bottoms with brown splotches in and around the central drain. My temper was being tested like never before when there was an impatient knock on the door. What now?! I stopped in my tracks, almost disbelieving the sound I had just heard. With my stress levels through
the roof, I waited in horror. Then, with an exhausted, yet excitable and still very wet (and if I’m honest possibly not completely clean) toddler buzzing around my ankles— I heard it again. This time the knock was followed by an impassioned request for me to hurry up, as the person on the other side of the door needed access as quickly as possible.
“In a few minutes!” I blurted out, knowing full well I was going to be much longer than that. After a scramble to get dry and packed up—and bit of back-and-forth between myself and the faceless person on the other side of the door—we were finally ready to leave. As I unlocked the door, all I could offer the person waiting was a “Sorry, I had a bit going on in there.” I kept my eyes glued to the ground as I rushed towards the exit door, not wanting to witness the aftermath of our incident.
Then the nightmare was over. I was a shell of a man. My boy, like kids tend to do, seemed completely unaffected, skipping down the pathway to our parked car and singing to himself as my mind started to compute what had unfolded in the last half hour or so. “Can we go swimming again one day?” he asked ever-so-innocently as I loaded him into the car. “One day,” I replied. As much as I want to encourage his excitement at taking to the water once again, I’m sh**ting bricks (as they say) about the next time. Hopefully he won’t be once we’re back in the water.

CASA Court Appointed Special Advocates – Speak Up for a Child – Celebrating 40 Years of Advocacy
Child abuse is on the rise. Not in some far-off place, but right here in Tarrant County. More than 580 Texas children are currently placed out of state. We are facing a CRISIS in the foster care system as the Texas Child Protective Services system does not have enough bed space for all children in its care. The numbers are clear. Without intervention, the effects of child abuse or neglect can continue to last a lifetime including: higher incarceration rates, teenage pregnancy, homelessness, substance abuse, and poor medical/mental health. Due to too few foster homes, siblings are often divided into different places. Children are rarely able to stay in their schools, daycares, or communities. Everything they have known is gone. Through no fault of their own, these abused children have become a part of an overburdened child welfare system. These children deserve a voice in the courtroom. They need a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer! CASA of Tarrant County has over 600 active volunteers from all walks of life. They span all age ranges. Some are just beginning in the workforce, and others are retired. Around half of their volunteers work full-time and have families. Some have criminal justice, social work, or child welfare backgrounds. Other volunteers have no such experience at all. CASA of Tarrant County provides all the training you need in a 33-hour course. You'll learn about courtroom procedures as well as the consequences of abuse and neglect. After the course, you'll be sworn in by a judge as an official volunteer advocate. As a volunteer advocate, you will be assigned to a Child Advocacy Specialist with CASA of Tarrant County who will guide you, support your efforts and attend all court hearings with you. Plus, volunteer requirements can be done on a flexible schedule. Through the years, CASA of Tarrant County has shown consistent growth in the number of children served each year. The ultimate goal is to provide every child in foster care who needs one with a highly trained CASA volunteer. Funding is received from the Texas Legislature that sets aside money specifically for Texas CASA programs, which are distributed by our state organization. The remaining funds are raised through foundation grants, civic and corporate organizations, individual contributions, 3rd party fundraisers, and CASA's special events. CASA Kids on Canvas, will be held on Thursday October 19th, between 5:30 to 8pm at the 4 Eleven in Ft. Worth. This year is CASA of Tarrant County's 40th Anniversary, so this event will be bigger and better than ever. Join them for a special one-night gallery event showcasing artwork created by children who are currently in foster care. Your support of this event can bring relief to so many hurting families! Give your time, fill your heart, and attend Casa Kids On Canvas.

WHY: Be a champion for children and speak up for a child! Your generosity enables CASA of Tarrant County to serve over 1,100 abused and neglected children in our community each year. Your investment of time and/or money matters so much to the children that need your help. Court Appointed Special Advocates make a world of difference in the life of an abused child. They listen, care and spend time with each child, and are a consistent voice whose purpose is to help during a difficult time. On average, children with a CASA volunteer are more likely to find a permanent home and be placed with a family and have better educational outcomes and receive more therapeutic services.
HOW: CASA volunteers make an incredible difference! From helping siblings find permanent placement together, to finding a child a stable home with a relative, to uncovering information that helps reunite a loving family, these volunteer advocates make incredible differences in the lives of abused and neglected children. CASA volunteer Tricia met Bryan, who was only a few months old at the time, at the hospital where he was admitted. Upon arrival, Tricia was absolutely speechless and shocked upon seeing his torn body in such a large hospital bed. She was heartbroken to find him in such a horrible state—he was lying in a coma and suffered from seizures, fractures, and many broken bones throughout his whole body. Doctors said the impact on his ability to walk, talk, and play would be profound. But that didn’t stop Tricia’s fierce advocacy as Bryan’s CASA volunteer and Bryan’s fight for survival. It was a long road to recovery, but Tricia worked to ensure Bryan was in a safe, supportive environment so he could heal from his wounds—physically, mentally, and emotionally. Tricia says that Bryan was “such a gift” and “as a volunteer, you may not be the doctor that saves him from immediate danger, but you are the one that makes sure that the rest of his life he’s going to have the home he needs.” Fast forward to today, seven years later, and Bryan is now a healthy, growing, and playful second grader! He is thriving with his adoptive family and “hitting milestones he was never supposed to get,” says Lee Gonzales, dad to Bryan. Bryan loves taking family trips as they always stop at his favorite place: Buc-ee’s.
CASA of Tarrant County and its court-appointed volunteers advocate for the best interest of abused and neglected children. They are on a mission to provide a CASA volunteer to every child who needs one. CASA promises to raise a voice against the unspeakable. Please consider speaking up for a child!

This easy homemade candy would be a lovely addition to a Christmas cookie plate and makes an excellent holiday or hostess gift. Who doesn’t love a treat that’s salty and sweet? They’re rich and satisfying without being too heavy. I got 20 treats out of this batch, but I bet you could easily get two dozen+ if you made them a little smaller.
INGREDIENTS:
12 oz semi-sweet baking chocolate, chopped
2 Tbsp peanut butter
1 cup mini pretzels, crushed
1 cup lightly salted peanuts
Sea salt for finishing
(1) Melt baking chocolate and peanut butter in a double boiler or at half power in the microwave. .................................................................................................
(2) Stir in crushed pretzels and peanuts. Drop spoonfuls onto cooking sheets lined with wax paper or silicone mats. Sprinkle a little sea salt on top.
(3) Refrigerate for 45-60 minutes and enjoy! Note: I recommend keeping these in the fridge. Eat them cold or set them out 15 minutes before serving.

Looking for a delicious no-bake treat that takes just five minutes to make?
Peanut Pretzel Bites! These taste even better than they look. I can not wait for you all to try them!
It’s now officially the ‘ber months. I am a huge fan of fall and all the chances to entertain. It fills my heart with joy to set out huge spreads that are sprinkled with decorations, and invite friends and family to gather around grazing and catching up. However, there is one small part of hosting that I don’t enjoy—the drink situation. It’s always an afterthought for me when really, it should be a co-star to the food. So, I was over the moon when I met Kaitlyn Hickey at a networking last year. She owns mobile bartending service Bar or Brew. A connoisseur of all things beverage related—from mocktails to cocktails to juice boxes and hot cocoa—Kaitlyn can completely take the planning and serving aspect off your plate. Thus, giving you more time to enjoy being at your own party. I recently spoke with Kaitlyn, hot off the heels of wedding season, to learn more about her business and how to prepare for holiday hosting.
What was your inspiration? Being a guest at quite a few weddings in the fall of 2018 and currently a full-time bartender, I realized very quickly that the bar should be a separate vendor at events—and not just a part of the staffing or catering company. When the most traffic at private events happens at the bar, why wouldn’t you want speed, knowledge, and creativity just like you would get at a bar in downtown? When I launched my business in 2019, I promised myself to only use bartenders who have true experience or possess the right personality and work ethic to become some of the very best event bartenders. Almost five years later and I have not broken that vow!
Most memorable event and/or theme? In September of 2021, the Dallas Margarita Society had a huge
gala at the Frontier Flight Museum, 007 themed. This is memorable for a couple reasons! Bill and Johnnie, the owners of Frankie’s in Dallas (where I used to work as a full-time bartender) were the planners for this event—and it meant a lot to me that they trusted us with such a big event for them! But also, my due date was the same day as the event, so I spent hours and hours on phone calls, meetings, and making event sheets for my bartenders to make sure not a thing was missed. I ended up having my baby boy a week early, so at one-week postpartum, I couldn't help myself and asked my parents to come watch the kids while I went for a couple hours to make sure everything was going as smoothly as possible. Of course, the event was beautiful, my bartenders killed it, and I was happy to see it all come together!
When should we start planning for holiday parties? It’s never too soon—at least for picking out a date and location. Other details can be finalized a little later as time gets closer (about a month out), but getting on the calendar is number one! Fall is also a crazy time for vendors as it is peak season for our industry, so don’t be hesitant to follow-up a few times.
Whether you’re celebrating holidays at your home, hosting a Halloween party, bridal shower, 1st birthday or 100th birthday... let Bar or Brew do the mixing, so you can do more of the mingling!
