SL EditorTalk 10TH ANNUAL TOPS IN TARRANT Congratulations to our 2024 Tops In Tarrant 100 Best in Industry Winners This is our first issue of 2024 and our 10th Annual Tops in Tarrant winner’s announcement feature. It’s an honor for any business to be named Tops in Tarrant and we congratulate the 100 businesses featured here. In today’s competitive landscape of business, attaining success requires dedication, innovation, and good judgement. Being at the top in business is not merely a testament to their financial success, but also a reflection of a company’s ability to navigate challenges, adapt to a changing market, and deliver value consistently. Companies that rise to the top will often exhibit a standard of excellence and the relentless pursuit of customer satisfaction. Maintaining this top position means staying ahead of trends and embracing new technologies. It’s a journey marked by both failures and successes—where an outside-of-the-box mindset is an asset and learning from your mistakes is a must. Your votes have decided what businesses deserved to be included on this list. Now, onto how we acquire this list of top companies by industry. Every year, I get inquiries from readers and business owners asking how this list is decided, so here are the details. We ask visitors to our website voting form to nominate one top business under each of 100 different industry categories. This online survey was available on SocietyLifeMag.com and was announced on our website home page and our social media feeds, as well as in ads in Society Life magazine. The votes are totaled and the final winner is the business with the most votes. You can view a list of all the categories and our winners for this year on pages 22-23 of this issue. Here’s how our ‘Tops in Tarrant’ winner list was compiled. ————————————————————————————————————–———–—— HOW THE TOPS IN TARRANT WINNERS ARE CHOSEN: The Society Life ‘Tops in Tarrant’ list is a result of a website-based survey from the 4th quarter (October, November, December) of 2023 requesting suggestions for the top local leaders of each listed industry. The 100 industry categories were chosen by the Society Life magazine editorial staff. It was suggested that any business who serves the residents of Northeast Tarrant County was eligible—including, but not limited to, Society Life magazine advertisers. If any business was nominated for multiple industries, it appears under only one industry as decided by the Society Life staff. There are no duplicate business listings allowed—each business may appear only once in the Top 100 which includes only the Top nomination under each of the 100 industry categories. The final numbers are confidential and anonymous. The resulting list on pages 22-23 of this issue reflects the companies who received the most votes from the final survey nominations. “A MAN WHO IS KIND BENEFITS HIMSELF, BUT A CRUEL MAN HURTS HIMSELF.” For those of us that are business owners, how we are viewed by the communities we serve is extremely important. And while that perception is critical to our success, we should be more concerned with how God sees us and operate with the utmost integrity. We must remember that God blessed us so we can bless others (Genesis 12:2). In Romans 12:6-7, we learn that all have been gifted by God. And although our gifts differ, we are instructed to use them according to the grace given to us— and those gifts should be consistent in both our professional and personal lives. Unsurprisingly, there are people who can be an expert at their profession, yet incompetent when it comes to people skills. In other words, they “act differently” based on the setting. As an LVN (licensed vocational nurse), I’ve had the opportunity to work with countless medical professionals. And while most displayed the love and compassion of Jesus Christ, there was one doctor who behaved like the spawn of Satan. He was the absolute best in his field, but was extremely harsh when dealing with employees, spending his days intimidating staff and making many feel uncomfortable. He spoke to nurses with such disdain that they all scurried as he arrived at the nursing station. Every day around am, rather than greeting the staff with a friendly “Good morning!” he made his presence known by cursing and demanding the patients’ charts. Though well-dressed and “good-looking,” he wore the ugliest attitude I had ever seen—as if he hated the sight of everyone he encountered.

As we examine 1 Corinthians 4:7, we are taught that everything we have has been given to us from God. The Living Bible Translation puts it really simple. It asks, “What are you so puffed up about? What do you have that God hasn’t given you? And if all you have is from God, why act as though you are so great, and as though you have accomplished something on your own?” Good question. Right? It’s not uncommon for a person to think more highly of themselves than they ought to. Romans 12:3 warns us of this. Unfortunately, accolades or life’s pressures form an exaggerated sense of self. They can cause us to behave differently based on our surroundings—nice in the workplace and a tyrant at home, or vice versa. Nevertheless, it can produce additional stress in the lives of individuals connected. As followers of Christ, we must do everything in our power to represent God with a spirit of empathy regardless of the environment. Matthew 25:40 promises that “whatever we do to the least of people, we do unto God.” God takes it personally when we mistreat others. We are instructed to treat others the way we want to be treated (Luke 6:31). God expects us to respond to malice or harshness graciously, without losing our witness. 1 Peter 3:9 says we are not to “repay evil for evil,” but instead, pray that

God will help them. For when we are kind to others, God blesses us for it. Romans 12:14 counsels to “Bless those who persecute you [who are cruel in their attitude toward]; bless and do not curse [them].” I was grateful to never interact with that doctor directly, but I felt terrible for the nurses who experienced his rage. While writing this article, I decided to google to see if he was still practicing. Sadly, he passed away in 2021. After reading his obituary, I was curious about what others thought, so I elected to read the comments. Surprisingly, they were all “positive.” Most people spoke about his kindness, a characteristic I never witnessed. As I scrolled down to read his reviews, I came across an article that spoke on disciplinary actions against him regarding his “unprofessional behavior towards hospital staff.” I witnessed the doctor’s harshness back in the late 1980s. It’s hard to imagine he continued those tirades for 30+ years. Maya Angelou once said that “…people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” It is my prayer that each of us will enter the New Year full of joy and kindness. Let’s bless the world with the best version of ourselves by creating beautiful memories for ourselves and everyone we encounter. May we let our light shine before others “so that they may see our good works and glorify our Father Who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). Choose kindness.

RIPE READS BOOK REVIEWS BY SANDY LOWE

Paul Allen believes strongly in the power of words. He uses concrete, clear images to illustrate this belief such as “Words carry meaning, just as a bucket carries water.” He purports that “the life we now live is a natural manifestation of our spoken spiritual reality” and “The more you talk about something the more substance you give it.” In other words, you are what you say especially where your spiritual life is concerned. In his short treatise, “The Theft of Worship: How to Ratify Your Position in Christ and Frame Your Reality in Truth by the Language and Lyrics of Your Worship,” Allen presents his understanding that the words we pray and sing must originate in our own hearts. He believes that our love for God, just as our love for a human partner, will rise up out of our own thoughts and feelings. Previously composed prayers or even song lyrics which you yourself have not created do not stand as acceptable worship in Allen’s theology.

The Theft of Worship

As an answer to this dilemma Allen presents praying and singing in tongues. He shares the story of how he came to understand and experience the baptism of the Holy Spirit in an overnight time of prayer and praise with a friend. Rather than exhaustion after a full night of worship, Allen awoke after

half an hour of sleep energized and enthusiastic about living out and sharing what he had learned. According to Dictionary.com: “Many Pentecostal churches encourage members to speak in tongues during prayer in order to communicate with God. Pentecostals also believe that speaking in tongues is a sign that the Holy Spirit has filled a person’s body after they have been baptized and accepted Jesus Christ.” Allen paints this aspect of some Christian groups as the route a successful life saying, “The baptism of the Holy Spirit is the supernatural on-ramp to living life more abundantly.” Allen discourages judging or condemning others who have not lived the tongue-speaking experience. He allows that all Christians are at different places in their walk and patience and forbearance should be applied in all relationships. To end the book, he suggests a 30-day trial. He advises to “Pay careful attention to your words. Accept this charge to speak or sing only words that Jesus could speak or sing—words that align with you speaking as Christ, not for him.” If this sounds like a step in your spiritual journey you’d like to pursue, the book can be purchased at: Amazon.com

The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra is thrilled to unveil the highly anticipated 20242025 season. As the FWSO enters its third year under Music Director Robert Spano’s leadership, the level of artistry and musical excellence continues to soar. With a renewed sense of passion and dedication, the orchestra is set to deliver an exhilarating lineup of performances that will captivate audiences. Spano’s collaboration with the musicians has resulted in the addition of exceptional talent to the core orchestra— filling about a dozen vacancies. The orchestra’s sound has been elevated to new heights, thanks to the collective efforts of Spano and the musicians. The 2024-2025 season promises to be a true celebration of their remarkable achievements.

The Greater Keller Women's Club is proud to present the 2024 Garden of Roses fundraising fashion show and luncheon ‘Fashion on Fifth.’ The 28th annual Garden of Roses Fundraiser, will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2024, from 9am until 1:30pm at The Bowden Events and Weddings Center in Keller. Join us as we spend a lovely morning on 5th Avenue enjoying the inspiring fashions of New York City’s shopping scene. The fashion show will be sponsored by Dillard’s. Guests will enjoy an elegant luncheon, raffle, live auction, silent auction, wine pull, and restaurant tree with gift cards from local restaurants valued of at least $25 each. The Greater Keller Women’s Club donated $130,000 in scholarships to the KISD Class of 2023 seniors from all four KISD high schools They also gave $95,000 in grants to 10 Tarrant County nonprofit charities. Over the years, GKWC has donated over two million in grants to local non-profit organizations and scholarships to KISD seniors collectively since 1996. They are proud that 98% of their annual fundraiser’s net revenue is distributed to beneficiaries. Both philanthropy and friendship are founding qualities of the GKWC—and its members donate thousands of volunteer hours each year in support of giving back to the community and having fun doing it! The symphonic series will showcase a stellar lineup of renowned conductors, guest artists, and collaborations. Violist James Ehnes, pianist Angela Hewitt, and the orchestra's very own FWSO Principal Cellist Allan Steele will grace the stage, along with Principal Violist DJ Cheek and the incredible Concertmaster, Michael Shih. The performances will be conducted by Music Director Robert Spano, Principal Guest Conductor Kevin John Edusei, as well as James Conlon and Jane Glover. In a continuation of the popular “theater of a concert” series, the FWSO will present a mesmerizing concert rendition of Wagner's The Flying Dutchman, featuring worldclass opera singers including Greer Grimsley, Heidi Melton, Ray Aceto, and more. This extraordinary evening promises to transport the audience into the heart of Wagner's timeless masterpiece. FWSO will continue to present its ever-popular Pops Series including a variety of films in concert such as Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Stars Wars: Return of the Jedi, and many other family-friendly popular concerts. It’s why GRACE works hard to host three unique events each year, the first of which is their annual Poker Tournament. GRACE’s top-notch event is back and ready to raise funds for their life-changing programs. On Saturday, February 3, GRACE will return to Park Place Land Lover in Grapevine as they generously host the 6th Annual GRACE Poker Tournament presented by Wright Construction, their Ace of Spades Sponsor. Attendees may choose to either spectate or participate in a high-stakes poker tournament, enter for a chance to win door prizes, partake in delicious bites from Scratch Catering & Fine Foods, play additional casino games, enjoy an open bar with an additional wine selection courtesy of Classic Wine, and receive swag items that are exclusive to the tournament poker players. Spots are still available if you would like to join the tournament as an individual player. Need a Valentine’s Day treat? Make Marshmallow Heart Pops! For this recipe I used my homemade vanilla marshmallows (which are so fun and satisfying to make!) Then I cut out a few hearts from the block. This recipe makes four heart pops, but it’s easy to scale it up if you want to cut out the whole batch of marshmallows for Valentine’s Day pops! .......................................................................................

The texture of these pops is pretty much perfect. The marshmallow is so soft and gooey and the chocolate is the perfect consistency — it doesn’t break away as you eat it like some chocolate coating does! I’m sure you guys will decorate these much cuter than I did. You can even get the kiddos to help! .......................................................................................

INGREDIENTS (makes 4) Homemade marshmallows (cut out with heart cookie cutter) 4 popsicle sticks 4 oz semi-sweet Ghirardelli baking chocolate 2 tsp shortening Sprinkles .......................................................................................

(1) Insert popsicle sticks into the bottom of the marshmallows. You want to go pretty much to the end so they’re as sturdy as possible. Note: You may need to roll the point of the heart back down if the popsicle stick distorts the shape. .......................................................................................

(2) Set a piece of wax paper on the counter large enough to hold all of your pops. .......................................................................................

(3) Finely chop baking chocolate and place in a heatproof bowl with 2 tsp shortening. Microwave at half power for about 2 minutes, stirring every 15-30 seconds until smooth and glossy. .......................................................................................

(4) Pick up a marshmallow pop, hold over the bowl of chocolate, and spoon chocolate on the marshmallow, using the back of the spoon to smooth over each side, gently tapping the excess chocolate off as you go. Move quickly! .......................................................................................

(5) Set on wax paper and add sprinkles if you desire. Repeat with remaining pops. Slide a small cookie sheet under the pops and pop in the fridge for 10 minutes to set. Store at room temperature in a Ziplock bag. .......................................................................................

FERAH TEX-MED KITCHEN A common misconception about me, as a food writer, is that I’m constantly trying new restaurants, chomping at the bit as soon as they open their doors. While I do stay on top of what’s coming, the reality is I try one or two new places a month—one local and one in the city—if I’m feeling motivated. I’m very much a creature of habit. I have my one coffee shop, my one smoothie place and a fave lunch spot. Getting me to deviate is an absolute act of congress. This year, I waited too long to make our Christmas Eve dinner reservation and our go-to local steakhouse was fully-booked. A little bit of research brought me to Ferah Tex-Med Kitchen in Southlake. Dare I try a new place on such an important night of the year? I took a chance and now this hidden gem has made it into my rotation. Ferah Tex-Med Kitchen offers a taste of the tapestry of flavors found in traditional Mediterranean cuisine with a bit of Texas flair, all wrapped in a lowkey glam dining experience. It’s like Dolly Parton joined the cast of Mama Mia on set in the Greek Isles. This “Tex-Med” concept is the brainchild of Chef Burak Ozcan. Chef Burak started his career as a chef in the most luxurious resorts across the Mediterranean before making his way to Dallas in 2011. After working with celebrity Chef Stephan Pyles to open various high-end restaurant concepts, Chef Burak transitioned to leading culinary teams in full-service hotels across DFW. During that time, he developed the innovative “Tex-Med” cuisine (Modern Mediterranean with a Texan Twist ). After opening the first Ferah Tex-Med Kitchen in 2019 in Garland, Chef Burak began offering private events and catering services. Chef Burak’s dedication to five-star hospitality and creative cuisine led to a loyal following of “Ferah Foodies” and a demand for ®

a second location on the Tarrant side. Ferah Southlake opened in July 2022. Ferah Tex-Med Kitchen boasts a diverse array of dishes that showcase the depth and breadth of Mediterranean gastronomy. One of the highlights is their broad selection of traditional mezes (aka appetizers). My not-to-be missed meze is the Bacon-Wrapped Stuffed Dates: tender Medjool dates stuffed with goat cheese, wrapped in Applewood bacon and drizzled with a chipotle aioli. It’s a balance of sweet, savory and salty with a little kick at the end. You can order it à la carte or as a part of Chef ’s Sample Platter. This is the best way to get a little taste of all the mezes Ferah has to offer. Aside from the dates, you’ll get to sample the pistachio-crusted Fried Goat Cheese, the Falafel, the Southern Cheesy Arancini and the Hummus. For the main course, you can’t go wrong with the classic Greek Gyro Platter, but if you’re looking for something unique to Ferah, the Wild Mushroom and Asparagus Risotto is another not-to-be-missed item. It’s rich and flavorful without feeling heavy. Order “as is” for a vegetarian delight or if you filled up on the mezes. If you need a little more oomph, add the short rib. I did this on a recommendation from my server. I am not typically a short rib fan, but I trusted her judgement and now I am a believer. Beyond the delectable cuisine, Ferah stands out for its impeccable service. Attentive and friendly staff ensures that guests feel not only welcomed, but well-informed about all the menu has to offer. I remember my servers from each visit just as much as I remember what I had to eat. This commitment to hospitality adds an extra layer to the dining experience that makes it the perfect spot for your next special occasion, Sunday brunch, happy hour, date night or just lunch.
