The Rio Grande Valley Hispanic Chamber of Commerce celebrated their annual Noche De Gala at Mario’s Banquet. They honored R. David Guerra with the Golden Eagle award, Business Man and Woman of the year was Fred Del Barrio and Dr. Barbara Baggerly-Hinojosa. Awards were also given to Small Corporation (Edna Posada), Medium Corporation (Rudy Martinez, Chic Fil A and N. 10th Edinburg), and Large Corporation was Whataburger. The evening offered a sit down dinner, dancing, live auction and silent auction.

WHAT LESSONS DID YOU BRING FROM WORKING ON NUCLEAR FAST ATTACK SUBMARINES WTO SCANTECH? Going through the US Naval Nuclear Power program taught me a lot about advanced engineering and technology systems, but more importantly, how to lead and execute with precision in order to achieve success. You were surrounded by the best of the best

who all had to meet rigorous academic and personal standards.

This; coupled with an intense training program and detailed procedures made very complex tasks and missions achievable. I also had the opportunity to be selected to attend Navy Dive School and supervise security diving operations in more than ten different countries. I am fascinated in the world we live; all the different people and cultures. That experience really gives you a different perspective on what is important in life.

WHAT WILL SCANTECH BE DOING IN THE RIO GRANDE VALLEY? ScanTech is constructing the “Rio Grande Valley ECP™ Center (Electronic Cold-Pasteurization)”, a 100,000 ft2 state-of-the-art E-beam treatment facility, in McAllen, Texas very near the Mexican border to treat produce traveling to and from the United States and Mexico. This facility will serve growers, packers, distributors and retailers across the supply chain. The facility integrates the latest cold chain best practices and safeguards with cutting-edge technology for yard management, dock scheduling, conveyor control automation, handling, storage, and finishing to be able to safely and efficiently process pallet loads of produce at the case level in a little over thirty minutes. Five temperature zones and a high density push-back racking system are employed to properly and accurately store product in proper cold chain requirements.

Finally, the facility will provide over one-hundred and seventy (170) direct jobs, hundreds of indirect jobs and new high-tech opportunities for the Rio Grande Valley and will also help increase the number of U.S. exports as restricted export commodities will have access to our state-of-the-art technology for statutory treatment of exports.

WHY THE RIO GRANDE VALLEY? The Valley is a special place. I have been traveling down here for ten years. I saw an opportunity way back then due to the large amount of fresh produce that was coming across the border and an emerging desire to help US farmers get their produce going south.

The Valley was not only an ideal location due to the established logistics businesses, but the openly friendliness of the people that made it even more attractive to build our flagship produce treatment facility, that hopefully will become a focal point globally.

THE RIO GRANDE VALLEY HAS A RICH HISTORY IN GROWING PRODUCE. WHAT ROLE WILL PRODUCE BE PLAYING IN THE FUTURE OF THE RIO GRANDE VALLEY?

WHAT IS SCANTECH’S RELATIONSHIP WITH MEXICO?

IN CHOOSING THE RGV, WHAT ATTRIBUTES WERE YOU SEEKING? We looked all over the country in every port and border crossing that brings in fresh produce. It started at the State level by Governor Rick Perry awarding ScanTech with a multi-million dollar grant to bring our high-tech business to the State. It was then up to us to decide where we needed to go. For obvious logistical reasons, the Valley was the perfect place to decide on a location. Then I met Keith Patridge with the McAllen Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) who welcomed us with open arms and worked tirelessly to ensure we had the best resources and guidance to find a great location. We then realized that the location was perfect, more than enough produce volume coming across the border, and friendly people that work hard and understand the value of our friends south of the border. THIS was the recipe we were searching for.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT THE RGV SINCE THEN? I have learned that my gut feeling was right about the people and their influence on the success of our company. The people down here are genuine and make you feel like you are a part of the family.

We are bringing one of the most technologically advanced systems to treat fresh produce without the use of harmful chemicals to the Valley. This facility is already getting international attention from the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) and foreign countries, in providing a full commercial facility that revolutionizes the fresh produce supply chain. Nothing like this exists in the U.S.; it is truly “cutting-edge”. But it is the culture down here and the people that have fit this technology into their daily lives; not the other way around. We are just giving them a tool to better serve the American consumer; all the while creating hundreds of jobs. This was supported from day one with former McAllen Mayor, Richard Cortez and has continued through current McAllen Mayor, Jim Darling.

Produce is king down here. Every time someone I know comes down here to meet me in the Valley for the first time, they are amazed by all the tropical trees and vegetation. They see the amount of trucks crossing the Pharr bridge and the line falling off into the horizon trying to get across. We have long supported the Texas International Produce Association (formally TPA) and know the impact fresh produce has on the Valley and our country. I also think the Valley shows the country how valuable our relationship is with Mexico and how working together is the key.

I have been visiting Mexico on business twelve years now and truly appreciate the people, culture, resources (such as fresh produce), and of course the food (with an occasional high-quality sipping tequila)! In all seriousness, I have made life-long friends in Mexico and admire their love of family and friends. Our investor base in the company involves some Mexican families mixed in with some from the U.S. I always knew this would be the right mix and something we pursued from the beginning. We have long supported Mexican grower organizations, attend their conferences regularly and have close working relationships with various Mexican government agencies such as SAGARPA and SENASICA. In the Valley my landlord and friend, Mr. Joaquin Spamer has helped my company tremendously by always introducing me to people on both sides of the border and showing me how the Valley gets business done!

ARE YOU BULLISH ABOUT THE ECONOMY OF SOUTH TEXAS? Absolutely. I think it is just getting started. With the completion of the Mexico Toll Road linking western Mexico to south Texas recently, future infrastructure improvements in the Valley at border crossings, the increasing demand for fresh/ high quality produce, etc. makes for a strong case. With universities improving facilities or building new campuses in the Valley proves that only positive things are going on down here. We hope that our technology and new ECP technology can add even more positive growth.

2018 VALLEY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA GALA ART OF HARP SYMPHONY

The Valley Symphony Orchestra invited the community to the 2018 Annual Symphony Gala honoring Frost Bank as their Corporate Cultural Leader of the Year.

A complimentary champagne and wine reception was offered to the attendees before this amazing affair. Guest artists were Iraida Poberezhnaya, an international acclaimed harpist, and her husband, Ildar Khannanov on piano. The duo dazzled the audience with an exciting presentation of musical selections demonstrating the wide range and versatility of the mysterious and ethereal instrument that forms the glistening golden heart of the orchestra.

2018 UTRGV DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR IMPACT ON THE UNIVERSITY, TEXAS AND THE WORLD

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley has honored three outstanding alumni with the 2018 Distinguished Alumni Award, the highest honor UTRGV alumni can receive.

The award recognizes high-achieving alumni who have made significant contributions to society through their accomplishments, affiliations, careers and philanthropy.

UTRGV Founding President Guy Bailey presented the recipients with their awards at a ceremony on Thursday, March 1, at the McAllen Country Club. They are: General William F. Garrison (R) of Hico, Texas, a retired major general of the U.S. Army. He is a 1966 graduate of UTRGV legacy institution Pan American College, where he played basketball.

Sen. Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa of McAllen, Texas, a 1970 graduate of Pan American College. He was elected to the Texas Senate in 2002 and represents District 20.

Welcome Wilson Sr., of Houston, Texas, a 1946 graduate of UTRGV legacy institution Brownsville Junior College. He is a real estate developer and businessman well known for his support of higher education.

Vice President for Institutional Advancement Kelly Scrivner opened the event by welcoming guests and introducing the honorees.

“Tonight, we are honoring these men – for saving lives. General; for improving lives, Senator; and for creating opportunities for better lives, Mr. Wilson,” Scrivner said.

“I’m inspired by each of you and the work that you do.”

Bailey introduced Wilson, the final recipient of the evening, with praise for his commitment to higher education and his contributions at The University of Houston.

‘‘

When the history of that university is written, his name will loom very large there,” Bailey said.

He said the Brownsville, Texas, native served in the Executive Office of the President for both Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy.

“This is a man who has seen much of what happened in the middle of the 20th century, first hand,” Bailey said.

In his acceptance speech, Wilson astonished the crowd when he disclosed his age.

“The best thing about being 90 years old?

No peer pressure,” he quipped.

In introducing Garrison, Bailey said, He didn’t go to West Point. He was drafted out of college and rose to the rank of major general. How many people can you count who did that? It’s really remarkable.”

Garrison, after accepting his Distinguished Alumni Award, said UTRGV is contributing to society in a meaningful way.

“Our great republic will prosper and excel as long as we have institutions like The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley that teach our young people, our young men and women, how to think instead of what to think,” he said.

Hinojosa accepted his award, recalling his days as a migrant farm worker.

I am who I am today because of Pan American, because of this university. It gave me an opportunity to receive and get an education.”

Hinojosa also called for commitment from other alumni.

As The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley approaches the completion of its third academic year, the university’s impact and footprint throughout the region is difficult to ignore.

From new construction to new academic programs to expanded healthcare, UTRGV’s mission of transforming the Valley through student success, educational opportunities, health and medical education, research, and community engagement, is alive and well.

“We are well on our way to transforming the higher education landscape in the Rio Grande Valley, and our impact on the region will grow as we continue to thrive,” said UTRGV President Guy Bailey. “Our current

success is a credit to the hardworking students, faculty, and staff who truly believe in UTRGV’s potential.”

Leadership is also key to UTRGV’s success, and Bailey has assembled an executive team to ensure the university takes advantage of its opportunities, while also addressing its challenges. The most recent and significant change to the leadership team came in February, when Bailey announced a substantial reorganization of the Academic Affairs and Research divisions.

“We decided on these changes after consultation with stakeholders and a review of feedback from the campus community,” Bailey said.

“The timing of the reorganization is propitious and positions UTRGV to best meet the vision laid out for it by the UT System Board of Regents at the time of the university’s formation.”

IMAS GUILD STYLE SHOW AND LUNCHEON A SPLASH OF SPRING

Ladies in attendance at the IMAS Guild’s Splash of Spring annual extravaganza of fashion and food at Embassy Suites on March 3 experienced an exciting afternoon. The IMAS Guild supports the museum by providing volunteers to help with fundraising, and various programs that require helping hands. Current projects include the planning and production of the museum’s annual Christmas Tree Forest, The Spring Style Show, and the annual Rummage Sale.
