Facing the Giants:
Natasha del Barrio On Cultivating Joy
By Dr. Kimberly Selber

Ifirst met Natasha del Barrio more than 15 years ago when she was finishing her MBA at UT Pan American (now UTRGV) and working in the marketing office of Bert Ogden Auto Group. Recently, she was named one of the Top 100 Leading Women in the North American Auto Industry—a prestigious honor awarded only once every five years. She is the first person from the Rio Grande Valley to earn this distinction, joining the ranks of industry leaders such as Mary Barra, the CEO of General Motors. Natasha, now CEO of Bert Ogden Auto Group, confidently holds her own at the summit of a traditionally male-dominated field, steering a multimillion-dollar enterprise with a blend of grace, authenticity, and resilience uniquely her own. We sat down to talk about her journey—the personal milestones, tough lessons, and defining moments that shaped her into the leader she is today.
During our recent conversation, Natasha revealed layers of herself she doesn’t share easily. While her professional ascent is impressive, it pales in comparison to the personal strength she exhibits daily. Natasha’s childhood was not one of ease. Born into circumstances marked by emotional upheaval and trauma, she quickly learned the skills of survival, far earlier than any child should have to. She candidly shared, “I grew up way too fast. As a child, I didn’t even know how to laugh.” Yet today, Natasha’s laugh, vibrant and infectious, rings out frequently. “I’m a total goofball,” she admits, with a wide smile.
Reflecting on her past, Natasha spoke about how early misconceptions helped shape her resilience. As a child facing traumatic circumstances beyond her control, she developed imaginative coping mechanisms—like envisioning “giants in the clouds” to make sense of her painful reality. “The giants,” she explained, “controlled everything,” allowing her to distance herself from the hurt by pretending it wasn’t real. While that strategy eventually faded, it instilled in her a deep appreciation for facing challenges head-on. “Clear conversations, even when hard, are essential,” she said—a principle that now defines her leadership style.
Natasha’s leadership style isn’t rooted in corporate clichés; it’s deeply personal and profoundly empathetic. Natasha doesn’t see herself as a “boss.”
She dislikes the word, explaining instead that she aspires to inspire rather than dictate. “I never responded to ‘because I said so,’” she confessed.
“It’s funny how sometimes the things that we get in trouble for as kids are exactly the things that serve us well in leadership positions as adults. I want to share a vision and have everyone excited to chase it together.”
It’s this approach—valuing genuine connection and transparency—that sets her apart. Natasha believes wholeheartedly in communicating clearly and compassionately, echoing Brené Brown’s wisdom that “clear is kind, unclear is unkind.” This ethos shapes her daily interactions, especially when navigating tough conversations. Her style isn’t just effective; it’s
transformative, as evidenced by employees who have come from bigger markets and found themselves stunned by the genuine care Natasha extends. “I’ve had to work with team members who initially struggled with our approach,” she explained, “but they soon realize they’re valued as individuals and not just numbers.”
One of Natasha’s greatest strengths is her remarkable ability as a communicator and writer. But as a young girl, she detested reading, she shared. “By the time I graduated high school, I think I had only read one book from start to finish. The Secret Garden,” she reminisced. But she mastered the art of distilling information quickly and clearly, a talent she now leverages daily. “I had to learn to communicate persuasively very young, out of necessity,” she reflects. That necessity turned into a leadership superpower, allowing her to articulate visions and bring people along willingly and enthusiastically. Today, she loves reading and values her quiet time in the early part of the day, when the world is quiet.
Away from work, Natasha has been intentional about reclaiming her joy. Realizing she’d spent years fulfilling obligations rather than personal dreams, she created her “50 Before 50” list—a bucket of ambitions, big and small, designed to ensure balance and fulfillment in her life. Among these is learning to fly an airplane. Natasha shared, “I wanted to rediscover who I was beyond work and responsibilities. Learning to fly symbolizes freedom and possibility.” The rest of her list is personal, she says with a sly smile, “I have no doubt I’ll accomplish them all, though.”
The girl who once sat alone, teaching herself how to laugh, now fills rooms with warmth and genuine care. Her three children, Ethan (13), Connor (11), and Cora (9), whom she speaks of with unmistakable pride, provide the anchor and motivation behind much of her joy and purpose. Natasha’s face lights up as she recounts moments of playful adventure with them, from building backyard zip lines during COVID lockdowns to gently coaxing her daughter into snorkeling despite the latter’s fears of sharks. Her children, she notes, are her greatest achievement— one she always knew she’d accomplish, even when other aspects of her future seemed uncertain. “My kids remind me constantly about the beauty of courage and vulnerability,” Natasha explained warmly.
Looking back, Natasha admits that her younger self would never have imagined the heights she has reached today. Yet, despite the accolades, it’s not the million-dollar enterprise or the industry recognition that she believes would astonish her younger self the most. Rather, it’s the profound joy she has cultivated— the laughter, the connection, the emotional richness of her life today. Natasha shared a powerful anecdote: “A mentor once told me, given my background, I should be dead in a ditch. Instead, I’m here, thriving and finding joy. That surprises me every day.”

The city extended a special welcome to the families of Edinburg’s 90 fallen service members, whose presence underscored the true cost of freedom.

Transform Your Mental Health without Disrupting Your Life

Everyone feels overwhelmed from time to time – but if stress and negative feelings begin to impact how you think, feel, and act, interfering with daily life, South Texas Health System® Behavioral is here to help.

An IOP may be the right choice if:
In addition to inpatient treatment, STHS Behavioral offers comprehensive outpatient programs, including an intensive outpatient program (IOP) designed to give you the high-level support you need to take control of your mental well-being – while continuing to live at home.

An IOP offers structured mental health support for a few hours a day, most days of the week. Sometimes referred to as “part-time day treatment,” an IOP allows flexibility for patients to maintain daily responsibilities and relationships.
An IOP typically teaches skills like stress management, emotion regulation, and effective communication – and then gives participants the opportunity to immediately put these skills into practice at home and in the community.
Group therapy is an integral component of IOPs, fostering a sense of connection and helping alleviate feelings of isolation that mental health patients often experience.
• Symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and other emotions are significantly impacting daily life.
• You’ve tried weekly therapy, but symptoms are not improving.
• You are seeking step-down care following inpatient treatment or an emergency department visit.
IOPs are not appropriate for people at risk of hurting themselves or others, or for those who need detox services. STHS Behavioral provides treatment programs for patients experiencing these issues, including a dedicated Chemical Dependency Unit.

Texas 89th Legislative Session:
Impact
on
the Arts and Support of Its Economic Value with $7.9 Million in New Funding
By Diane Milliken Garza, PhD CEO, RGV Philanthropic Foundation | Commissioner, Texas Commission on the Arts
The 89th Texas Legislative Session brought renewed attention to the arts and their growing role in strengthening both community life and the state’s economy. While the arts often struggle for visibility amid larger state budget conversations, this session resulted in real progress, most notably, a $7.9 million increase in funding for the Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA). This new funding enables the TCA to expand its grants and services, thereby increasing support for arts organizations across the state, particularly those in rural and underserved areas. The boost includes $5.9 million for grantmaking and $2 million for the state’s cultural districts. These investments aren’t just about aesthetics—they have a direct impact on job creation, tourism, small business development, and community wellbeing.
The TCA played a pivotal role in articulating the value of the arts sector and advocating for increased funding. From preserving cultural heritage to supporting innovation and education, the TCA’s mission is rooted in strengthening quality of life through access to the arts for all Texans. Equally important was the advocacy work of Texans for the Arts, a statewide nonprofit that remains one of the most effective voices for arts funding in Texas. During the session, they mobilized arts leaders and everyday citizens alike, helping lawmakers see the arts not as a luxury but as a necessary engine of local and statewide growth. Their coordinated efforts helped ensure that the arts remained on the legislative agenda, even as larger debates over tax cuts and infrastructure dominated the headlines.
The economic impact of the arts in Texas is significant. From film, music, and visual arts to design, architecture, and live performance, the creative sector supports thousands of jobs and generates billions of dollars in economic activity. Events like South by Southwest and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo are cultural powerhouses, but equally important are the countless festivals, performances, and art spaces in smaller towns that bring people together and boost local economies. In addition to the economic benefits, the arts play a vital role in education. While no new legislation mandated the expansion of arts programming in schools, there was productive dialogue around the importance of integrating the arts into the curriculum, especially in communities where access to cultural resources remains limited. Creative learning is linked to critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving—all essential skills for Texas students preparing to lead in a rapidly changing world.

Cultural preservation was another theme during the session. From Indigenous art forms to emerging urban movements, Texas is home to a remarkable range of artistic expression. Legislators recognized the importance of safeguarding this diversity and ensuring it continues to thrive for generations to come.
Governor Greg Abbott demonstrated his support for the arts by approving the TCA’s budget increase. By not vetoing the funding, the Governor affirmed the state’s ongoing commitment to the creative sector and its contributions to both community vitality and economic development. That decision enables the TCA to reach more Texans, particularly those in areas where access to the arts is often limited.
The 89th session sent a clear message: the arts are not a side note to progress in Texas—they are central to it. By funding creativity, we are investing in the kind of communities where people want to live, work, and stay.

Beyond the Beach: Rediscover South Padre Island
By Dr. Kimberly Selber
About 80 miles from the SOCIALIFE offices, there’s a place where salt air, rich history, and creative energy swirl together in one breezy, barefoot package. South Padre Island has long been the region’s go-to beach destination—but it’s more than a sun-soaked escape. It’s a place with depth. A place that tells stories. And it’s calling you back, not just for the sand and surf, but for the soul of the island—revealed through its past, its preservation efforts, and its stunning art scene.

Let’s Start with the Backstory
Before the hotels, the bridge, or even the maps got it right, the original locals—Karankawa and Coahuiltecan peoples— called this slender stretch of coastline home. They lived in harmony with the land and sea, drawing sustenance from its rich estuaries, fishing the bountiful Gulf, and building a culture deeply rooted in the rhythms of nature.
Then, in 1554, three Spanish treasure ships—the San Esteban, Espíritu Santo, and Santa María de Yciar—crashed into the shallows just north of what is now South Padre Island. These vessels were part of a fleet sailing from Veracruz to Spain, heavy with silver and ambition. Their wreckage was scattered along the coast, launching legends and curiosity that still ripple through local lore today. Let’s just say, it’s the kind of history that makes 8-year-olds (and, yes, adults) want to dig
For the Birds
Let’s talk wetlands and wings. If you haven’t walked the boardwalks at the South Padre Island Birding & Nature Center, it’s time to change that. This isn’t just a bird sanctuary—it’s a front-row seat to nature’s most ambitious runway show. Opened in 2009 and part of the World Birding Center network, the Center spans over 50 acres of coastal wetland habitat—featuring marshes, mangroves, mudflats, and tidal lagoons—all stitched together with over half a mile of winding boardwalk and a five-story observation tower overlooking the Laguna Madre.
What makes it exceptional? For starters, more than 330 species of birds have been documented here, making it one of the most bird-diverse spots in Texas. During peak migration in spring and fall, it’s a literal lifeline for tired birds that have just crossed the Gulf of Mexico. We’re talking warblers, orioles, tanagers—exhausted travelers touching down in this rich habitat for rest and refueling. Without these wetlands, many wouldn’t survive the journey north or south.
In 2019, the Center added an alligator sanctuary (hello, Big
for gold under every seashell.
Fast-forward to the early 1800s, when the visionary Catholic priest Padre José Nicolás Ballí brought new life to the island. Known for both his spiritual leadership and practical grit, Padre Ballí established a ranch and mission. His spiritual and charitable work deeply embedded him into local culture, eventually lending the island his name: “Padre Island.”
Over the decades that followed, the island would shift political hands—from Spanish colonial rule to Mexico, and finally to the Republic of Texas in 1836—each chapter leaving its mark on the land and its people. By the 20th century, word was out. With the first causeway built in 1954, access to the island was no longer reserved just for the seafaring.
Padre and Lady Laguna), which upped the wow factor for families and wildlife lovers alike. Daily educational programs introduce guests to gators, birds, and coastal ecology with the kind of charm and accessibility that turns casual tourists into lifelong naturalists.

From Backyard Sanctuary to Renowned Conservation
It all began with Ila Fox Loetscher—aviator, adventurer, and eventually, South Padre Island’s most beloved conservationist. After making history as one of the first licensed female pilots in Iowa, Ila followed her passion to the coast. In the 1960s, a visit to Mexico’s Rancho Nuevo— home to the critically endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtle— changed everything. She adopted a handful of hatchlings and brought them back to South Padre, launching a lifelong mission that would evolve into a local legacy.
In 1977, she founded Sea Turtle, Inc. from her backyard. Ila’s home became a sanctuary and classroom, where locals and curious tourists would gather to hear her talk turtles—and sometimes witness her hosting tea parties with hatchlings. (Yes, really.) Her charismatic storytelling and pioneering spirit made her a legend on the island.
Today, Sea Turtle, Inc. has grown far beyond Ila’s backyard. The organization now operates the world’s largest fully enclosed sea turtle hospital and one of the most advanced recovery centers. A major expansion completed in 2025 introduced a 15,000-square-foot enclosed facility featuring surgical suites, observation windows, and educational exhibits that bring guests face-to-face with sea turtle rescue and rehabilitation efforts. The center plays a crucial role in marine conservation, admitting over 100 turtle patients annually. It houses a variety of species—including loggerheads, green sea turtles, and Kemp’s ridleys—and occasionally, a rare hawksbill or leatherback.
The dedicated team at Sea Turtle Inc. led the historic, recordbreaking rescue of more than 5,500 cold-stunned turtles during the infamous 2021 Gulf freeze. As temperatures plummeted and sea turtles lost the ability to swim or even move, Sea Turtle, Inc. became the epicenter of one of the
Art That Goes Beyond the Beach
You’ve seen South Padre’s legendary sunsets—fiery balls of light melting into the Laguna Madre, turning the sky into a canvas of pinks, purples, and gold. Now picture that same creative spark captured by local artists, visible everywhere you look—from murals to ceramics, jewelry to mixed media. Art here doesn’t just reflect the beauty of the island—it echoes it.
Over the past few years, South Padre Island has quietly blossomed into an arts destination. Beach-inspired creativity flows through galleries, street art, pop-ups, and sculpture trails. Vibrant murals surprise you on side streets, while larger-than-life sea turtle statues and sandcastle sculptures create an open-air museum feel across town.
At the heart of this creative bloom is the ART Business Incubator—ABI SPI. Since opening in 2019, ABI SPI has helped launch five to six artists per year by offering no-cost studio space, storefront exposure, mentorship, and marketing support.
largest wildlife emergency responses in Texas history. Volunteers and staff worked around the clock, transforming local convention centers, gyms, and even the airport hangar into makeshift turtle triage centers. Blankets, heat lamps, and saltwater pools were repurposed to stabilize the stunned reptiles. Their coordinated efforts not only saved thousands of turtles but also brought global attention to the urgent impacts of climate events on marine life.

Visitors can tour the hospital, meet long-term residents like Hang Ten and Poppy, and discover how conservation and cutting-edge care come together. The experience is part science, part heart—and entirely unforgettable. And if you time it just right, you might witness a hatchling release, watching dozens of tiny turtles take their first steps and return to the sea.

The incubator also hosts workshops, live demonstrations, and community art nights where you can create something of your own while chatting with artists whose work reflects the rhythm and color of the Island. The sunsets may still be the island’s best-known masterpiece, but thanks to ABI SPI and its growing cohort of creatives, South Padre’s art scene is earning its own spotlight.
Beach Bliss: Award-Winning Sands and Coastal Charm
You can’t talk about South Padre Island without mentioning its beaches, consistently ranked among the best in Texas and the nation. With over 34 miles of uninterrupted coastline, SPI delivers soft, sandy stretches and warm Gulf breezes that feel tailor-made for beachcombers, wave chasers, and hammock dwellers alike.
Known for their wide, clean, and well-maintained shoreline, gentle surf, and spectacular sunrise views that feel like a slow exhale after a long week, South Padre Island’s beaches have earned multiple accolades, including spots on USA Today’s and TripAdvisor’s “Top 10 U.S. Beaches” lists. And just this month, Travel + Leisure magazine named SPI number 13 on their list of the Best Islands in the Continental U.S.
South Padre Island makes enjoying the beach easy and inclusive. Many of its public beach accesses feature free parking, walkways, and rinse stations. Even better, several locations offer ADA-compliant beach access points, along with beach-friendly wheelchairs available for loan. Whether you’re traveling with kids, seniors, or guests with mobility
Splash into Water Sports
Beyond the beach blanket, adventure awaits. South Padre is one of the top water sports destinations in Texas, thanks to its warm waters and steady coastal winds. Try your hand at kiteboarding, windsurfing, or stand-up paddleboarding along the calm waters of the Laguna Madre. For a bit more adrenaline, there’s jet skiing, parasailing, and banana boat rides—perfect for groups looking to laugh and splash their way through the day.
Fishing fanatics will find their paradise here, too. Book a deep-sea charter into the Gulf or try your luck off the jetties or public piers. Want to slow it down? A sunset kayak or dolphin-watching cruise just might be your speed.
So, Why Go Now?
Because it’s close. Because it’s beautiful. Because there’s more to the story than what you remember from spring break or family road trips. South Padre Island is a destination in full bloom—ripe with culture, rooted in purpose, and ready to welcome you back.
challenges, SPI has worked hard to ensure everyone can dip their toes in the Gulf.
Whether you’re building sandcastles at Isla Blanca Park, shell hunting near Beach Access 6, or simply soaking in the sun with a tropical cocktail, the beach scene here is versatile and vibrant.

ETIQUESTIONS
I am new to networking and socializing, but I understand the value it brings to helping me reach my goals. What are your top etiquette tips for me as I strive to meet new people and establish a strong professional network?
You are so correct! Networking and socializing are crucial for achieving goals My best etiquette tip for networking is “Use People’s Names!” A name is everyone’s most prized possession, and you will be amazed at how doors open when you greet people by their name Additionally, prepare a bit of an elevator pitch about yourself Don’t memorize anything, but have some thoughts about how you want to introduce yourself to other people
I have an acquaintance whom I see a lot at social events, and this week is her birthday. What is the general rule about giving birthday gifts to people you know, but who are not exactly close friends? I do want to be polite, but I don’t know this person well enough to have confidence in gifting something that she would enjoy.
Gift giving can be tricky! I think it’s always great to be kind in small ways A birthday gift that is small but thoughtful is always a great gesture Pay attention to what your acquaintance likes Maybe the person likes a certain color If so, you could find a scarf or a jewelry piece in that color As long as the gift is thoughtful, it will be appreciated
It’s finally summer, and I’m excited to spend time with my kids and participate in their summer activities. We have signed up for several camps and have already begun one. However, I am not super happy with the way most of the other Moms bring their children to camp super late. It really delays all the other campers from getting started with the day’s activities. Is there a general rule of thumb for arriving at events on time?
Summer is here, and we are all excited! Summer, Fall, Spring punctuality is a very important etiquette topic for the reasons you just gave When we are late for an event, we delay the start of the event for all those who arrive on time Teaching our children how to be on time is a valuable lesson that will help them later in life and work A great rule of thumb is always to plan to arrive about 15 minutes before an event begins That will allow for time for traffic, parking, etc It’s okay to arrive early and wait in the car That is a much better alternative than arriving late and delaying everyone else Happy summer!

Behind the Scenes at the Museum of South Texas History
By Sandy Pollock, Communications Officer, Museum of South Texas History
Running a museum is a bit like running a school, a church, a small business, and a time machine all at once. At the Museum of South Texas History in Edinburg, our job is to preserve and share the region’s layered, complex history while also keeping the lights on and the air conditioning working.
Visitors see the polished exhibits and carefully curated artifacts. What they don’t always see is the teamwork behind the scenes. One minute, we’re hanging a 200-pound map from 1892; the next, we’re digging through drawers to find the right projector cable before a speaker takes the podium. There’s no such thing as a
typical day unless your typical day includes grant deadlines, school field trips, and a mystery smell coming from the archive.

Our museum tells the stories of the borderlands, from Indigenous communities and Spanish settlers to ranching families and civil rights leaders. But behind those stories is a staff made up of educators, archivists, security guards, volunteers, and a few of us who somehow know how to reset the Wi-Fi.
We clean up glitter after Día de los Muertos and wipe away tears when someone hears their grandfather’s oral history for the
first time. We answer questions like, “Do you have dinosaurs?” (We have a mammoth.) And, “Is that a real noose?” (It is, and there’s a story behind it.) We make each other laugh. We problem-solve constantly. And we show up every day because we believe this history matters.
A museum like ours doesn’t run on prestige. It runs on coffee, curiosity, and community. It’s powered by generous donors, loyal members, return visitors, and the curious kids who ask the best questions.
So next time you walk through our doors, know that behind every exhibit is a team that cares deeply about the stories, the people, and this unique corner of the world. And if you spot someone hustling through the gallery with a clipboard, don’t worry. That’s just one of us keeping history alive.

Habitat’s work is grounded in respect, collaboration, and a commitment to strengthening the entire community. Guided by a mission to build strength, stability, and selfreliance through shelter, Habitat for Humanity of the RGV partners with hardworking, low-income families from the four-county region who may not qualify for traditional mortgages, providing them with a meaningful “hand up” rather than a “hand out.”
Habitat for Humanity of the RGV has proudly constructed over 100 homes throughout the Rio Grande Valley, helping families achieve responsible homeownership. Families become true partners in the process, contributing significant sweat equity hours by investing work in their own homes, fostering a deep sense of pride and community. Volunteers from all walks of life contribute their time and skills, making the organization’s work possible and fostering a spirit of unity.
In addition to building homes, Habitat for Humanity of the RGV
operates the ReStore. This retail outlet sells new and gently used building materials, furniture, appliances, and home goods to the public at discounted prices. HOME ALONE, NOT LONELY: SMART TIPS FOR LEAVING YOUR DOG AT HOME
By Dr. Ruben Castro
We love our dogs like family, because they are. But as much as we’d love to spend every moment with them, real life sometimes pulls us away. Many pet owners worry about how their dogs feel when left home alone, whether for work, to run errands, or due to unexpected delays. The good news? You can help your furry friend feel safe, calm, and content even when you’re not there with a few thoughtful strategies.
Create a Comfort Zone
Leave your dog with items that carry your scent, such as a favorite blanket, toy, or worn T-shirt. Dogs find comfort in familiar smells, easing separation anxiety and making them feel like you’re still close by.
Stick to a Routine
Dogs love consistency. Feeding times, walks, and even when you leave or return should follow a pattern. A predictable schedule helps reduce confusion and stress.
Crate Train with Care
When used correctly, a crate is a safe space, not a punishment. Make it cozy and positive by adding treats and soft bedding. Your dog should eat, drink, and sleep in its crate to strengthen this positive association. Your dog will start to see it as a relaxing den.
Play Calming Sounds
Leaving soft music or the TV on can soothe your dog while drowning out outside noises. Classical music, in particular, has been shown to calm anxious dogs. According to a 2002 study by animal behaviorist, Dr. Deborah Wells, dogs spent more time resting and being quiet, and less time standing when exposed to classical music than heavy metal, pop music, or conversation.
Try an Automatic Feeder
If you’re gone for long hours, an automatic feeder ensures your dog stays on schedule and gives them something to look forward to.
Consider Doggy Daycare.
Social dogs benefit from doggy daycare, which provides exercise, companionship, and a break from boredom. Even occasional visits can make a big difference.
Use Smart Pet Tech
Pet cameras and two-way audio devices let you check in, talk to your dog, and even toss treats remotely. It’s a great way to stay connected throughout the day.
In the End

Keep Their Mind Busy
Food puzzles, interactive toys, or a short training session before you leave can mentally stimulate your dog and tire them out, in the best way.
Hire Help, or Visit Yourself.
A trusted dog walker or sitter can provide a midday break and some friendly interaction. If you can, a quick trip home during lunch can brighten your dog’s day, even for a short time. Your dog will thank you for it, and you’ll get a quick dopamine boost when you see your dog, which will help you power through the afternoon!
End on a Happy Note
Leave calmly, without too much fuss, and greet your dog warmly when you return. These routines help build trust that you’ll always come back.
Leaving your dog home alone doesn’t have to feel like a guilt trip. With a little preparation, some clever tools, and plenty of love, you can create an environment that keeps them happy, healthy, and patiently waiting for your return. Because no matter how long you’re gone, a dog’s love and tail wag are always waiting.
