HOW WE DO IT

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND

DID YOU KNOW?

In the mid-1700s, the Island was known as Isla de Santiago. It was later renamed La Isla Padre after Padre José Nicolás Ballí, who owned the island in 1804 and served as a missionary priest. He also founded the first mission in present-day Cameron County.

South Padre Island has more than 300 days of sunshine a year.

The Queen Isabella Causeway is the longest bridge in Texas (2.5 miles long) and the only road connecting South Padre to the mainland.

In the Mid 18th and 19th centuries, South Padre Island was a haven for pirates.

South Padre Island is home to a large nesting population of Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles.

South Padre Island is a tropical island - roughly the same latitude as the Bahamas.

Located along the Central Flyway, Padre Island is a globally important area for over 380 migratory, overwintering, and resident bird species (nearly half of all bird species documented in North America). Thirteen of these species are considered species of concern, threatened, or endangered.

The island was inhabited by the Karankawa and Coahuiltecan tribes centuries before the arrival of European explorers. Artifacts from their cultures can still be found on the island today.

South Padre Island is part of the greater Padre Island, the longest barrier island in the world – 113 miles

Fostering Creative Enterprise: The Art Business Incubator on South Padre Island

South Padre Island, renowned for its pristine beaches and vibrant nightlife, is now becoming a notable hub for the arts, thanks to the Arts Business Incubator (ABI). Established in 2019 with the mission of bolstering local artists and creative entrepreneurs, the ABI-SPI is transforming the island's cultural landscape into an arts destination.

The ABI, pronounced “ABBY” by the locals, is a pioneering venture designed to incubate and nurture the entrepreneurial spirit within the arts community on South Padre Island by sponsoring six in-resident artists a year. ABI provides a collaborative environment where artists can work, learn, and grow, offering affordable resources and programs aimed at fostering creativity, innovation, and business acumen among local artists and creators. Workshops and seminars on various topics, such as business planning, marketing, and grant writing, are regularly organized to help artists turn their passion into a profitable enterprise.

The ABI's emphasis on community engagement sets it apart. “The Incubator frequently hosts art exhibitions,

cultural events, and public art classes,” said Julie Boughter, ABI SPI Program director. “These events also offer residents and visitors an opportunity to engage with artists, appreciate their work, and learn about the creative process behind it.”

The public is invited to stop in any time between 11 AM and 7 PM, Monday through Sunday. There is always an exhibit to view, art to buy, or a class to join.

Eva Ryan

Class of 2022

Paper cutting found artist Eva Ryan when she needed it most. The social worker, trained in the field of intimate partner violence, found herself in need of self-care. “It [paper cutting] is a self-healing art form for me,” said Ryan.

Ryan’s work is detailed, up close, and very personal, exploring themes of mysticism, science, impermanence, home, and healing from abuse. Coincidentally, Ryan finds that people who work in the helping professions - nurses, doctors, social workers - connected with her work. “They needed to take care of themselves,” Ryan stated. “They saw that in the work and in the stories of my pieces.”

Ryan wants her audience to remember to slow down. “My work focuses on combating hustle culture,” states Ryan. “We need to focus on the

type of rest that creates experiences - playful, creative, sensory experiences.”

Though the work seems fragile, it is also strong and sturdy, like her favorite animal, the snail. “I love snails because they go slow, they hibernate, and they are very strong.” These are all qualities the artist hopes she conveys in her work.

“Ideas come to visit,” Ryan muses. “We decide if we want to work with them or not.” To foster other people’s creative adventure, Ryan offers a five-month, one-on-one mentoring program she calls “Creative Your Own Adventure.”

Ryan is opening her gallery, Paper Caper, in August 2023 at 104 E. Pike St., Suite B, South Padre Island. Visit her online gallery at papercaperco. com

Malia Quinn

Class of 2021

Born and raised on the mainland of Hawaii, Malia Quinn is a child of nature and a classically trained artist. After studying landscapes in Colorado for ten years, Malia Quinn knew it was time for a change of scenery and subject - the fleeting feeling of moving water. A student of the Plein Air (French for outdoors) style of painting, Quinn found a landscape home on South Padre Island. “South Padre Island is so beautiful. Each day is different, depending on the time of day,” Quinn said. “I am interested in exploring the elements of form, light, and space where the end result is a striking balance between chaos and order.”

Inspired by the famous Plein Air painters like John Singer Sargent, Quinn finds joy in knowing her art brings a sense of peace to her patrons. “We feel better mentally after being in nature,” Quinn describes. “Bringing nature into a home can bring about the same feeling.”

Quinn Gallery, located next door to the ABI SPI studio, offers classes on Wednesdays (Drawing) and Saturdays (Painting), as well as plein air private lessons on the beach.

HOOKING HEARTS AND MINDS: Fishing's Future

In the fast-paced, screen-dominant world of the 21st century, there's a growing need to reconnect individuals—especially younger generations—with family and the natural world. Amidst this call, one man stands out for his dedication to environmental education and the preservation of both the family and a timeless pastime: fishing. Through his non-profit organization Fishing's Future, Shane Wilson is casting a wide net for change.

The Heartbeat of Fishing's Future

More than just an enthusiastic angler, Shane Wilson is an empathetic visionary on a mission. Acknowledging the chasm dividing families in our fast-paced society, he established Fishing's Future in 2007 on South Padre Island, a refuge where nature and humanity intertwine. “It is not just about teaching the mechanics of baiting a hook or casting a line,” said Wilson. “It's about fostering family bonding, promoting outdoor activities, and cultivating an understanding of our responsibilities towards the environment.”

From hosting family fish camps and children's fishing events to running educational programs endorsing ethical practices such as 'Catch and Release,' Fishing’s Future has blossomed into a transformative platform. Now with more than 70 chapters across the United States and Great Britain and over one million participants, Fishing's Future is setting in motion a tidal wave of change, equipping today's youth and families to be the stewards of tomorrow's environment.

A Ripple Effect

Upon witnessing the enthusiasm of 11-year-old Silas, the one-millionth participant in Fishing's Future, Wilson felt a new surge of inspiration. "It's time to extend our reach to those in need – those with special needs, veterans, survivors of domestic violence," Wilson asserts with a steadfast gaze. A man of faith, he believed that a sign would illuminate his path forward.

And indeed, it did, in the form of a rather salty man, Tim Lippoldt, bound to a wheelchair racing down Padre Blvd.’s bike lane. This fortuitous meeting would profoundly transform both of their lives.

A Testimony of Resilience

“A Hummer fell on me about six years ago and left me paralyzed from the waist down,” recalls Captain Tim Lippoldt. “I wasn’t in the best frame of mind.” Wilson stopped Lippoldt in the street, gave him his business card, and said, “I need you.” Lippoldt laughed and replied, “I’m a guy in a wheelchair. Nobody needs me.” But that couldn’t have been further from the truth.

Together, Wilson and Lippoldt breathed life into the ICAN, a uniquely designed vessel built to accommodate wheelchair users and those confined to medical beds. Today, Lippoldt, a Port Isabel native and lifelong angler, helms the ICAN with pride and purpose.

Unity in Action

Armed with his effervescent optimism, Wilson attracts those who share his vision. "We had a lead engineer from Disney assist us in designing a lift that enables our passengers to immerse themselves in the water," Wilson exclaims. "The pure joy on their faces, mirrored by their families, as they experience the water is an immeasurable treasure."

Fishing’s Future, supported by grants and personal donations, offers these life-altering experiences free of charge. Wilson personally engages with each family in advance to gauge their needs, ensuring a memorable and

28 SOCIALIFE SUMMER WWW.SOCIALIFERGV.COM

comfortable experience. "Just last week, I connected with a young man who is paraplegic, blind, and has use of only one hand," Wilson shares, "I left a reel with him to practice ahead of our adventure."

Wilson fondly recounts the tale of WWII Navy veteran Lloyd Jaeger, whose daughter requested a fishing trip for her father's 95th birthday. "He hadn't been able to fish for ages. It was a beautiful experience," Wilson reminisces, his eyes gleaming with satisfaction.

Currently, the ICAN is able to host one family excursion a week. “We hope to be taking two trips a week soon,” Wilson said. “Fundraising is critical to making that happen.”

Celebrating Strength and Resolve

The conviction of the ICAN's captain is unwavering. "I have my life back. Before, I was just going in circles," Lippoldt confesses. "I don’t want to do anything else, ever." Together, the duo crafted the motto, "I CAN. I DID. I WILL AGAIN," epitomizing the transformative power of positivity, ingenuity, and faith.

Through Shane Wilson's inspiring journey, Fishing's Future and the ICAN program continue to touch lives and inspire hearts, reminding us all of the profound power of connection—to nature, to each other, and to our shared future.

To learn how you can invest in Fishing’s Future, visit fishingsfuture.org or make a trip to Jim’s Pier; I’m sure you’ll spot Shane and Captain Tim easily.

Barrier-Free Beach Vacation

Traveling to South Padre Island for visitors with mobility issues.

Many of us dream about leisurely beach vacations - lounging on warm sand, listening to the rhythm of the waves, and basking in the glorious sunshine. For individuals with mobility issues, though, planning a beach vacation can seem daunting. But don't let mobility concerns curb your South Padre Island beach dreams. Thanks to advancements in accessibility, a trip to South Padre Island can be as relaxing and enjoyable as you've always imagined.

South Padre Island offers wheelchair-accessible entrances, beach-friendly wheelchairs, and dedicated accessible parking, ensuring all visitors can enjoy its sandy shores and tranquil waters with ease. Former Texas Land Commission Jerry Patterson declared South Padre Island beaches the most accessible in Texas.

Many of the South Padre Island beach accesses points have features

such as ramped access, beach wheelchairs, and Mobi-Mats - a non-slip mat that provides a firm surface on the sand. Visitors can also borrow, at no cost, Mobichairs. These are amphibious wheelchairs that are beach and surf accessible. They not only allow someone with mobility issues to get out and enjoy the beach but also allow them to access the water. The South Padre Island Fire Department has 14 MobiChairs for loan on a firstcome, first-served basis by calling (956) 761-3040.

Traveling with mobility issues doesn't mean compromising on a fantastic beach vacation. Some watersport rental companies are ready to accommodate different mobility needs. SPI Sessions offers classes for people with special needs. “We are able to teach any age and any ability,” said SPI Sessions owner Erin Hartwell. “We have a

range of equipment for different needs.” According to Hartwell, there is no need to call ahead, just show up and be ready to have fun. “This week, we have an 83 year-old-woman who wants to learn to surf,” Hartwell said. “We are excited to have her.” You can even bring your furry friends, but don’t forget their life jackets!

The City of South Padre Island also has accessible transportation. All Island Metro buses meet ADA requirements and are equipped with wheelchair lifts and will pick up passengers anywhere along their route. Island Metro also offers a Paratransit service which allows passengers to be picked up off-route and transported anywhere around the island. Passengers requesting this service must receive pre-approved medical status from the South Padre Island Department of Transportation by calling (956) 761-8178 to receive an application.

Beyond the beach, a majority of South Padre Island resorts and hotels offer accessible rooms, ramps, and elevators. However, a few of the older motels and condominium rentals do not have accommodations.

Having mobility considerations shouldn't deter you from experiencing an incredible beach vacation. You can enjoy the soothing rhythm of the waves, the warmth of the sun on your skin, and the liberating feeling of your toes (or wheels) in the sand. Remember, the beauty of travel lies not just in the destination but also in the journey - and every journey is worth embarking on, regardless of how you move. So pack your sun hat, grab your sunscreen, and get ready for an accessible beach adventure.

Reviving Bahia Grande: A Testament to Ecological Restoration

In South Texas, in the heart of Laguna Madre, Bahia Grande (Big Bay) was once a desolate, dry basin, a specter of its former self.

Today, however, it brims with life and is home to one of the most biologically diverse areas in Texas. It is a testament to one of the most successful ecological restoration projects in the U.S. and spearheaded by a team of close to 65 partner organizations.

The transformation of Bahia Grande over the past years has been nothing short of miraculous. The building of the ship channel in the 1930s functionally cut off the Bahia Grande from tidal flow, creating a massive dust bowl, leaving thousands of terns and colonial waterbirds without a habitat. It was only in 2005 that the onceisolated basin was reconnected with

the Gulf of Mexico, breathing life back into the 6,500-acres that had remained desolate for decades. This was the beginning of an ecological renaissance.

Dr. David Hicks, a professor of marine biology and Director of the School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences has been lead on several biological and water-quality monitoring efforts over the years. With a career dedicated to aquatic habitats and their conservation,

Dr. Hicks and his team from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley provide feedback to US Fish and Wildlife Services about the biological and water quality responses to their physical channel modifications. Hicks understood that reviving Bahia Grande was more than just about filling a dry basin; it was about restoring a vital ecological habitat.

The man-made channels connecting Bahia Grande to the Gulf made an almost immediate and drastic change. Tidal waters from the Gulf surged into the basin, bringing a plethora of marine life and attracting a diverse variety of bird species, effectively turning Bahia Grande back into a vibrant ecological hotspot.

Scientists have focused on the long-term ecological implications of the project. Monitoring studies have documented the spectacular resurgence of the fish population, including the redfish, newly formed oyster beds, and the basin's revitalization has attracted redheaded ducks, which haven’t been in the area for over 70 years.

The Bahia Grande project's success has also encouraged eco-tourism in the region. The basin is now a popular spot for bird-watching.

The revitalization of Bahia Grande has served as a compelling case study for successful ecological restoration. The efforts of dedicated conservationists highlight the efforts and scientific research in reversing environmental damage. Bahia Grande stands as a beacon of hope, inspiring other regions around the world to adopt similar initiatives and showing us that with commitment, patience, and science, it is possible to breathe life back into even the most desolate landscapes.

ETIQUESTIONS

We are new boaters, and we are super excited. What is the top boating etiquette tip we should know before we head out to South Padre Island and put our boat in at the bay?

Boating at South Padre Island is so much fun! The top boating etiquette tip that everyone should follow is about your boat speed Remember that you should slow your speed to reduce your wake when approaching another boat or when you are close to the land Happy boating!

After spending the day out at the beach, we love to drive to our favorite restaurant for dinner. Is it ok to wear our bathing suits inside the restaurant? Sometimes, I feel weird about it.

Beach time is the best time! When it comes to going from the beach to a restaurant, I think it is ok to wear your bathing suit but take some sort of cover-up A dress or shorts and a shirt would work well as a cover-up Also, remember to wash off all the sand from your clothes, shoes, bags, etc , before going inside the restaurant

When it comes to music in public places, be courteous Sound amplifies over a body of water, so keep music levels down Your taste in music may not be what your neighbors enjoy .

Indoor Sanctuary Ushers in a New Era of Sea Turtle Rehabilitation and Research

On the 15th of November, 2022, the echoes of a rich history were heard as the process of tearing down the long-standing open-air hospital at Sea Turtle, Inc began. For almost 25 years, this structure served as a sanctuary for countless sea creatures. Now, in its place, emerges the single largest fully enclosed sea turtle hospital in the world, a testament to Sea Turtle, Inc.’s commitment to taking conservation to the next level.

TAKING IT INDOORS

The journey towards this monumental shift has not been without its hurdles. The capital campaign for the new hospital had been progressing for over a decade, bearing the hopes and dreams of the community. It took an unexpected turn in the wake of the cold stun event in February 2021, which forced Sea Turtle, Inc. to reevaluate its plans for an open-air facility.

The unusual 2021 weather event dropped the water temperature of the Gulf of Mexico significantly, resulting in the “cold stunning” (paralysis) of the turtle population. More than 5,500 turtles were rescued by Sea Turtle Inc. staff and a multitude of volunteers off the shores of South Padre Island that winter.

“The cold stun event was a game-changer in many ways,” said Wendy Knight, Chief Executive Office for Sea Turtle, Inc. Coupled with growing patient demand, increasing pressure on Texas's electric grids, and unpredictable weather and climate changes, it was evident that the traditional approach was no longer sustainable. “We just can’t do what we’ve always done,” Knight continued. “It’s time for an evolution.”

This evolution resulted in a revolutionary interior concept hospital that could dramatically increase patient capacity. The new facility features a dedicated cold stun room capable of housing up to 500 sea turtles and a transparent lucite wall to allow public observation of operations.

One of the most prominent reasons for shifting to an indoor facility is durability. Outside elements often force the organization to replace items far sooner than their typical lifespan, which takes a toll on finances and resources. “Now, we're turning the tables on this battle with weather conditions,” said Knight.

“Our commitment to openness and outreach has always been at the core of our mission,” Knight stated. The organization relies on admission fees as vital funding for the feeding, treatment, and surgical care of these majestic creatures. “Every time we had to shut our doors due to unforeseen circumstances, it hurt us,” Knight continued. An indoor facility greatly increases continuous operations during weather events.

Previous experiences, especially during the cold stun event,

42 SOCIALIFE SUMMER WWW.SOCIALIFERGV.COM
REHABILITATION
COMMUNITY PRIDE SOCIALIFE
EDUCATION CONSERVATION

illustrate that Texas's typically pleasant weather can sometimes turn treacherous. With this new hospital, Sea Turtle, Inc. will have the tools to deal with such disasters much more effectively.

Additionally, the new setup enables Sea Turtle, Inc. to aid other facilities in times of need. “In the past, our capacity to help was often hampered by limitations,” Knight said. “Now, those restraints have been removed.”

As the organization looks forward to helping a larger number of patients, they also look back at successful efforts. “We had 20 cold stun patients flown in from the north right before experiencing a massive cold stun event at our own facility. With the new indoor setup, we're prepared to provide a safe haven for these creatures in any circumstance,” said Knight.

ONLY ONE OF ITS KIND

The groundbreaking new facility will house the world's only fully dedicated CT scan machine for sea turtles. This will give visitors a unique, live view of the scanning process. Moreover, the surgical suite, visible to the public, promises to double, if not triple, the capacity of patient tanks.

“On average, we admit 75 patients per year, a number we expect to double with the new facility,” stated Knight.

A lot of what Sea Turtle, Inc. does now requires them to go off-site. “That will be totally eliminated with the new facility,” said Knight. For example, Knight explains that to get a CT scan of a patient, they must travel to McAllen. So, not unlike a human patient, the less you do, the better. So taking that animal out of the water, loading them up on a vehicle, driving them an hour and a half, putting them in a machine, going through that process, putting them back in the car, and driving them back is not the ideal scenario. It is stressful on them, just like it would be on a human patient.

INNOVATIVE RESEARCH

The hospital is not just a treatment center but a research hub. Led by chief conservation officer Dr. Amy Bonka, Sea Turtle, Inc. aims to change the future of sea turtle populations. “Our partnerships with universities bring research funding and grants to our doorstep. Facilitating onsite research where actual nesting occurs is critical,” Knight said.

In addition to nesting research, Sea Turtle, Inc., in collaboration with researchers at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, has continued innovating prosthetic technology. Alison, a resident Atlantic Green Sea Turtle attacked by predators leaving her with just one functioning fin, has been at the heart of an ambitious project to design and craft an actual prosthetic.

WWW.SOCIALIFERGV.COM 43 SUMMER SOCIALIFE

The current project team, planning to wrap up their session by the end of August, has embarked on a promising journey with Alison, taking her feedback and refining their approach. By August, a replacement prosthetic and a 3D printing image should be available, showcasing the group's commitment to creating effective solutions.

Addressing Alison's challenges is just a microcosm of a global issue. Numerous other turtles like Alison could significantly benefit from such technological innovations and improvements. However, the aim is not to monopolize these breakthroughs but to share them.

“The spirit of the initiative is to provide access to these advancements without financial constraints,” Knight stated. “The extensive input from volunteers, engineers, doctors, plastic surgeons, dental artists, and others, who have contributed to Alison's success, if monetized, could prove costly for most.” Therefore, the project intends to distribute this knowledge freely, making it attainable for all who need it.

While Alison's case was unique, it opened doors to identifying similar needs in other hospitals. There's also Hang Ten, a Ridley Kemp with a flipper deformity impacting her swimming and foraging abilities - yet another challenge the team is eager to tackle.

With minds from Sea Turtle, Inc., and its affiliates, the potential to solve these issues is substantial. All that is needed is the appropriate space and conducive environment to resume their work.

Supporting Sea Turtles

While planning a trip to South Padre Island, make time to visit Sea Turtle, Inc. With a yearly influx of approximately a quarter of a million guests, of which nearly 100,000 are children, the new facility will allow Sea Turtle, Inc. to cater to a larger audience, particularly the young conservationists who will carry this mission forward.

“We are an organization founded and started by good people that just want to do good things,” said Knight proudly. Hundreds of volunteers are helping on the Island, but supporters can get involved from anywhere in the world. “We don’t get any state, city, or federal funding,” Knight said. By visiting Sea Turtle, Inc. in person or going to its website, donors can sponsor hatchings, support nests, or donate to the care and feeding of permanent residents like Allison and Hang Ten.

Sea Turtle, Inc. is located at 6617 Padre Blvd., South Padre Island, Texas, and is open year-round to the public, Tuesday through Sunday.

REMEMBER: If you see a sea turtle on the beach, stay out of the way. Do not touch the turtle; this can cause stress, disrupt a nesting female, or disorient a hatchling. The best way to help is to contact our hotline at 956-243-4361.

And most importantly, don’t litter. Leave the beach in pristine condition when you leave.

South Padre Island The Ultimate Sandcastle Destination

Nothing says summer, like building a sandcastle at the beach. But South Padre takes sandcastles to a whole new level!

South Padre Island proudly wears the crown as the 'Sandcastle Capital of the Universe.' It offers an unrivaled experience - a unique opportunity to witness magnificent sandcastles not just during the summer but throughout the year. Moreover, a visit might treat you to the sight of local master sculptors

chiseling their latest creations on the famed Sandcastle Trail.

These sculptural marvels, crafted from sand and water, are delicate beings - vulnerable to time, the elements, and the human touch. Nevertheless, local master sculptors and their devoted assistants labor tirelessly all year to preserve these sandy treasures.

The Sandcastle Trail is a longcherished dream of South Padre Island's esteemed Sandcastle Master, Sandy Feet. With the city's financial backing in the summer

of 2013, work commenced on the individual sculptures that now enhance the trail.

Currently, the island plays host to 25 of these sand wonders inviting you to admire and, of course, photograph them. In addition to the trail, the Sandcastle Village under the tent at the base of the Ferris wheel in the Entertainment District is a must-visit. This village evolves with the seasons and holidays, with its Holiday Village offering an unforgettable Christmas spectacle.

To make sure you see all of these exquisite masterpieces, stop by the South Padre IslandI Chamber Information Center or the Visitors Center at 321 Padre Blvd. to grab a copy of The Art Trails map marking the locations of these sandcastles. And while you’re there, visit the largest permanent outdoor sandcastle in the U.S.

A gentle reminder: While our sandcastles bask in the attention and love a good photo-op, they are fragile under human touch. So, admire them to your heart's content, let your cameras capture their beauty, but please, resist the urge to touch them.

South Padre Island Birding, Nature & Alligator Sanctuary promises a rich, delightful spectacle throughout the year.

SPRING

Imagine flying 600 miles over open water non-stop. No big deal, right? This is easily accomplished in a plane in about an hour. Not so for thousands of migratory birds who make this dangerous trip at night, navigating by the stars each spring to reach nesting grounds in Canada or Alaska. At the mercy of the Southwind, South Padre Island is the first sight of land for these weary travelers. Tired, thirsty, and hungry, these tiny aviators are ready for a much-needed rest before heading on to their final nesting destinations.

“We work year-round to assure that the habitat here at the Nature Center has everything the migrating birds need,” said Javier Gonzalez, SPI Birding and Nature Center Naturalist Educator. “They need bugs and berries, and we provide these by planting native plants and making sure they are in sync with the needs of the birds.”

“The best time to see migratory birds on South Padre Island is March through May, with the peak in late April,” said Gonzalez. On a good day, one can see up to 100 different species of birds. “This past Spring,” reflects Gonzalez, ”we had 240 different species drop in.”

Spring is about color, the birds, and the flowers. “It is extremely beautiful here,” says Gonzalez. Western Tanager

SUMMER

Summer is hot, and most of the resident birds are nesting. But come late summer, the Island comes alive with new life. “We can see Reddish Egrets, Tricolored Herons, Black Skimmers, Black-bellied Whistling Ducks, Common Gallinule, and Kiskadees,” says Gonzalez. “I especially love the ducklings.”

Summer also means warm water for other nurseries, including crabs, turtles, and alligators. Visitors can also see lots of dragonflies and 20-25 different species of butterflies.

During the hot summers the Nature Center’s alligator population is very active. “They are cold-blooded creatures and move very slowly when it is cold,” Gonzalez stated. “When it is hot, they move around a lot and are fun to watch.” Currently, the Nature Center is home to over 40 nuisance-rescued alligators. These reptiles can never be returned to the wild because of their interaction with humans before being rescued. The Nature Center works with other sanctuaries as they grow and need additional space and care.

FALL

Fall is like a second spring on South Padre Island and, according to some, the most beautiful. Coastal nectar plants are in full bloom, the Nature Center’s gardens are bursting with colorful flowers, and the migrating birds are not in as much of a hurry to leave as they are in the spring.

“The best time for Fall birding is right after a cold front,” says Gonzalez. “The North winds come down, and the birds stop over to shelter.”

The South Padre Island Birding, Nature & Alligator Sanctuary is open daily from 8 AM to 5 PM. Visit SPIBirding.com for more information and to plan your visit.

Luminous Legacy: The Port Isabel Lighthouse

Sitting regally in the southernmost part of the Lone Star State, the Port Isabel Lighthouse has commanded attention for more than 170 years. Overlooking the azure waves of the Gulf of Mexico and nestled in the quaint town of Port Isabel, Texas, this lighthouse's storied past and scenic surroundings offer a journey through the annals of maritime history. The Port Isabel Lighthouse is the only lighthouse open to the public on the Texas Gulf Coast.

Beacon of the Gulf

Erected in 1852, the Port Isabel Lighthouse was originally built to guide ships safely through Brazos Santiago Pass, which leads into the Laguna Madre, a lagoon tucked between the mainland and South Padre Island. Standing 57 feet tall, the lighthouse has been a sentinel for seafarers, playing a critical role in maritime safety for decades. Its unique location and height also offer unobstructed panoramic views of South Padre Island, the Queen Isabella Causeway, and the beautiful Laguna Madre Bay.

Tracing the Tide of Time

The Port Isabel Lighthouse bears the marks of history. In the Civil War, it served as an observation post for both Confederate and Union forces, testifying to its strategic importance. In the 20th century, it underwent several restorations, transforming it from a maritime guidepost into a historical monument. In 1957 it was turned over to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and declared a state park.

A Journey to the Top

Visitors to the Port Isabel Lighthouse can take a spiraling 75-step climb up a narrow, winding staircase. The journey to the top may be a bit challenging for some, but the reward is undoubtedly worth it. Once you reach the viewing platform, the vista that unfolds is breathtaking. Tickets are required.

Lighting the Way

While the Lighthouse may not be used for seafaring safety today, the 3rd Order Fresnel lens is lit nightly thanks to the Texas Historical Commission. Historically, the lighthouse was active from 1852 to 1905, when it was decommissioned. The lens was removed, and the lighthouse sat dark until 1952, when the building and surrounding area became a Texas State Park; it was ornamentally illuminated for seventy years. In November 2022, the 3rd Order Fresnel Lens was installed, bringing an authentic experience for visitors to the lighthouse.

Exploring the Surroundings

After your ascent of the lighthouse, a visit to the surrounding grounds is not to be missed. The park is a verdant haven, perfect for picnics and leisurely strolls. Located near the lighthouse is the charming replica of the Keepers Cottage, now functioning as a museum. This cottage, which would have housed the lighthouse keeper and their family, provides insights into the life and tasks of the keepers who maintained this navigational beacon.

Dinner and a Movie

There’s nothing more nostalgic than watching a movie outside. Since 2004, the City of Port Isabel has screened films on the side of the lighthouse every Thursday at 9 PM June through July. On July 2nd will be a movie and Fireworks! Grab a meal from one of the local restaurants, and dine under the stars while enjoying a free show.

Port Isabel: A Coastal Treasure

Port Isabel itself is a destination that radiates a warm, inviting aura. Rich with heritage and blessed with a scenic backdrop, it's a coastal treasure filled with charming restaurants, quaint shops, and other historical landmarks. This community's pride in its maritime history is palpable, and the lighthouse is an emblem of this rich heritage.

THE SIX ECOSYSTEMS OF SOUTH TEXAS

Savanna: The South Texas Savanna ecosystem is characterized by grasslands interspersed with trees or shrubs. It's a transitional area between forests and deserts or grasslands. These ecosystems support a diverse array of wildlife including deer, bobcats, and various bird species.

Agricultural: The Agricultural ecosystem in South Texas refers to areas where the natural landscape has been altered for the cultivation of crops or the rearing of livestock. This includes farmlands for growing cotton, sorghum, and vegetables, or pastures for cattle grazing. It's a significant ecosystem in terms of human sustenance and economic activity.

Thorn Forest: Thorn Forests in South Texas are semiarid ecosystems characterized by small, thorny trees and shrubs. These hardy, drought-resistant plants have adapted to the hot, dry conditions. Species like mesquite, acacia, and cacti are common. This ecosystem is home to numerous wildlife species, including ocelots and various bird species.

Salt Prairie: The Salt Prairie ecosystem is found in areas with saline soils, typically near the coast. The vegetation is salttolerant and includes grasses, herbs, and shrubs. Wildlife adapted to these saline conditions includes numerous bird species and small mammals.

Dunes: The Dune ecosystems are found along South Texas beaches and are formed by wind-blown sand. These shifting landscapes are home to specific plants like sea oats and beach morning glory that can tolerate sandy, nutrient-poor soil, strong winds, and salt spray.

Coastal Prairie: The Coastal Prairie ecosystem in South Texas is a flat, coastal area dominated by various species of tall grasses. This ecosystem provides crucial habitat for a wide range of wildlife including waterfowl, migratory birds, and small mammals. These prairies also play a critical role in flood control, water purification, and carbon storage.

Seeing Green

Mangshan vipers are venomous snakes from high elevations in the mountains of southern China. The species was only recently discovered in late 1989, and recent surveys have shown it to be almost extinct in the wild. Accordingly, it has achieved the dubious distinction of being assigned “Endangered” status by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Affectionately called “Mangs” by the professional keepers that care for them, they are majestic serpents that grow to an impressive length of over seven feet! Despite their large size, Mangs are great climbers. They often lay in ambush within trees and shrubs, waiting for an unsuspecting bird or small rodent. Their brilliant emerald color, accented with browns and dark greens, perfectly provide them with the camouflage needed to blend into their moss-covered montane environment. Their faces are equipped with heat-sensory pits that allow them to detect the heat signature of a warm-blooded animal . . . even in complete darkness.

The Gladys Porter Zoo originally acquired a sub-adult female in 2009, and then a male in 2011. Once the pair was of breeding size, they were put together with the hopes of reproduction, but there was very little action for the first few years. In 2017, San Diego Zoo was the first U.S. institution to produce a verified captive-bred offspring. This got the herpetoculture realm buzzing with excitement that successful reproduction of this species was indeed possible! What we learned, however, was that they are not an easy species to breed outside of their uncommonly chilly montane natural environment. After multiple failed attempts to breed the pair at Gladys Porter Zoo, it was obvious something different had to happen if there was to be success.

One requirement for getting Mangs to breed was the ability to seriously cool them down during the winter. This was not easily done within their exhibit at the Herpetarium. In 2017, thanks to funds raised at Zoofari, the Zoo’s annual fundraiser, part of the proceeds were dedicated to the purchase of a custom refrigeration unit for the Mang exhibit. Starting in early November of that year, the snakes were cooled down gradually until the low was at 55 degrees Fahrenheit. After about a month of chilling, the exhibit’s temperatures were slowly brought back up into the 70s for spring.

THIS BREEDING SUCCESS AT GLADYS PORTER ZOO MARKS
ONLY THE THIRD TIME THE ENDANGERED MANG HAS BEEN PRODUCED IN A U.S. ZOO.

The vipers were never observed to have bred, but the Herpetarium staff still hoped for the best. Well, they hoped for four-plus years, with no positive results, and optimism began to fade. In 2019, with the intention to offer more mate selection options, the Zoo acquired another pair of Mangs. These were placed with us on loan from the Animal World and Snake Farm Zoo in New Braunfels, Texas.

Offering a more dynamic group setting seemed to illicit some changes in behaviors. Finally, in October, 2021, one of the pairs were seen breeding! They were once again cooled down for the winter and in April 2022, the female looked larger than usual. Additionally, she started basking under her heat lamp – a great sign that she might be developing eggs. In time, she was separated from the group to give her some privacy. About a month later she laid a clutch of 22 eggs!

However, only six eggs appeared fertile. After 55 days of incubation, the first Mangshan viper baby emerged! The other five siblings emerged from their eggs over the next couple of days.

This breeding success at Gladys Porter Zoo marks only the third time the endangered Mang has been produced in a U.S. zoo. Though it took twelve years of vigilance and trial-and-error, the victory was “oh so sweet” for the entire Herpetology staff.

Discovering the Ocean's Wonders: A

FAMILY ADVENTURE AWAITS AT THE UTRGV COASTAL STUDIES LAB

For fifty years, the UTRGV Coastal Studies Lab (CSL) has been a pivotal part of the university’s School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences, conducting extensive research on coastal and marine environments. Yet, its mission doesn't stop at scientific discovery - the CSL is also committed to sparking public interest in marine conservation and science, making it an ideal destination for family visits.

Visitors can explore a range of exhibits, from beautiful aquatic displays to informative exhibits showcasing local marine and coastal life. Children can marvel at the vibrant array of fish species or get up close with sea stars and hermit crabs.

One of the CSL's most engaging features is its touch tanks, a definite hit among younger visitors. Here, children can safely interact with various marine species, providing an immersive and sensory learning experience that brings the wonders of the ocean right to their fingertips.

But the CSL's appeal extends beyond its indoor offerings. Its location at Isla Blanca Park, a stone's throw away from the Gulf of Mexico, means that a visit can easily be combined with a day at the beach. Families can participate in guided beach explorations led by the CSL's staff, unearthing the hidden gems of South Padre Island's shoreline and learning about the marine creatures that call the beach their home.

If you’re visiting the Island during the popular Discovery Channel show “Shark Week,” stop by for special presentations about sharks and their importance to the ecosystem. On July 10th, 12th, and 13th, visitors can also participate in a shark dissection.

In today's digital age, where screens often eclipse experiences, the UTRGV CSL offers families a welcome break. It invites parents and children alike to reconnect with nature and explore the magic of the marine world together. So, if you're planning your next family adventure, consider a stop at the UTRGV CSL - where the ocean's wonders are waiting to be discovered.
