The McAllen Holiday Parade: the magic is in full swing—Santa’s sleigh is polished, the elves are buzzing, and the RGV is ready, and so is SOCIALIFE!

Fall and winter—finally. It’s sweater weather in the Valley (yes, even if it’s 72).

Everyone knows I’m a sucker for the holidays— and especially Halloween! Our annual SOCIALIFE Halloween Party was one for the books, and you’ll get to see all the costumes (and a few surprises) in our next issue.

And the holidays mean gala season is slowing down, but SOCIALIFE is bursting at the seams! We covered almost 30 events in this month’s edition— that’s a new record. Our Valley is growing, and so are our hearts.

Speaking of excitement,

how about that UTRGV Football energy? The Vaquero spirit is outrageous—and contagious! Our SOCIALIFE Tailgates have been an absolute blast. I’ve loved seeing our community come together to cheer, connect, and celebrate this incredible new chapter for the Valley.

And yes, we’re taking that same energy to the coast— keep an eye out for our brand-new SOCIALIFE SPI magazine coming out this week, too!

A warm welcome to Texas A&M McAllen and Toloa as our newest partners and advertisers—thank you for joining the SOCIALIFE family.

Finally, make sure you’re following SOCIALIFE across all our social media channels for behind-thescenes moments, event highlights, and the latest on what’s happening across the Rio Grande Valley and South Padre Island. Like, share, and stay SOCIAL!

Cheers!

FIGHTING FOR WHAT’S RIGHT

Omar Ochoa Law Firm

AtOmar Ochoa Law Firm, we believe every client deserves strong, honest, and fearless representation. Our story began right here in the Rio Grande Valley, where our founder, Omar Ochoa, was born and raised in Edinburg, Texas. From the beginning, his vision was simple: to create a law firm that levels the playing field for individuals and businesses facing powerful insurance companies and corporations.

After graduating from Edinburg North High School, Ochoa pursued his education at The University of Texas at Austin, where he earned undergraduate degrees in business, accounting, and economics and a master's in professional accounting before completing his law degree at the UT School of Law. During law school, he served as Editor in Chief of the Texas Law Review and graduated with honors.

Ochoa began his career working with national law firms, handling complex business and litigation matters. Yet his heart remained in South Texas. He returned home to establish Omar Ochoa Law Firm in McAllen, driven by a commitment to represent clients across Texas with the same quality and expertise found at large firms, but with the personal attention and care that only a local firm can provide.

Today, our team proudly represents clients in personal injury, insurance recovery and property damage, and business litigation. We’ve taken on some of the toughest

cases, from major storm and fire losses to serious injury claims and commercial disputes. Our results speak for themselves, with more than one billion dollars recovered in verdicts and settlements for clients throughout Texas.

However, success to us is more than numbers. It’s about helping families rebuild after tragedy, ensuring homeowners receive fair treatment from their insurers, and guiding business owners through complex legal challenges. Every case we take on represents a real story, a real struggle, and a chance to make a lasting difference.

Our firm has been honored with statewide recognition, including Ochoa’s selection to the Texas Super Lawyers list, an achievement that places him among the top five percent of attorneys in the state. He was also previously recognized as a Rising Star for his excellence in litigation and leadership in the legal profession.

At Omar Ochoa Law Firm, we are proud to stand up for what’s right; one case, one client, and one community at a time.

If you’ve suffered a loss, been denied a valid claim, or been injured through no fault of your own, we’re here to help.

Call (956) 253-3121 or visit OmarOchoaLaw.com to schedule a free consultation. Let us fight for you, because justice isn’t just our profession, it’s our purpose.

CITY OF EDINBURG HONORS HEROES WITH 5TH ANNUAL 9/11 REMEMBRANCE RUN/WALK

The City of Edinburg brought the community together to honor the heroes and victims of September 11, 2001, during its 5th Annual 9/11 Patriot Day of Remembrance 5K Memorial Run/Walk. The event, hosted by Edinburg Parks & Recreation, began with a solemn ceremony at Fire Station 1, where attendees paused for the ringing of bells, the wailing of sirens, and the playing of TAPS in tribute to those lost. Following the ceremony, participants joined a 5K run and a 911-meter honorary walk around Edinburg City Hall, led by a drumline. The day served as a heartfelt reminder of courage, unity, and sacrifice.

History on Every Floor:

Museum Exhibit at the New Hidalgo County Courthouse

Whenvisitors walk through the new Hidalgo County Courthouse, they are greeted not only by the modern design of the building but also by the stories of the past. Through a partnership between Hidalgo County and the Museum of South Texas History, each floor of the courthouse now features photo exhibits that highlight the region’s rich and complex history.

The idea behind the exhibit is simple but powerful: a courthouse is more than a place of law. It is a gathering space, a civic landmark, and a symbol of the community’s values. By bringing history into this public space, the museum ensures that every visitor, whether arriving for jury duty, a hearing, or official business, can also reflect on the people, events, and places that shaped Hidalgo County.

The exhibits trace a wide arc of history. Some panels focus on the courthouses themselves, beginning with the earliest structures that served as the seat of justice in a growing border community. Others highlight the growth of towns and industries, the struggles and triumphs of families, and the creation of the “Magic Valley” as agriculture transformed the landscape. Each floor invites visitors to step into a different chapter, creating a kind of vertical museum tour through the building.

What makes the courthouse exhibit meaningful is its accessibility. Unlike a museum gallery that requires an intentional visit, these displays are part of the daily life of the courthouse. Judges, attorneys, staff, and residents encountering the panels are reminded that history is not separate from civic life. It lives in the same spaces where decisions are made and futures are shaped.

The Museum of South Texas History has long been dedicated to preserving and sharing the heritage of the region. Projects like this extend that mission beyond the museum walls. Led by Curator Jenarae Bautista, the team carefully selected photographs and stories that balance recognition of the county’s challenges with pride in its achievements. The result is an exhibit that is informative, inspiring, and rooted in community.

The new Hidalgo County Courthouse stands as a modern landmark, but thanks to this partnership, it also serves as a storyteller. The building connects the past with the present and reminds us that the history of Hidalgo County belongs to everyone who walks its halls.

MOST HISTORY: RIGHT TO LEARN

On October 1, the Museum of South Texas History hosted the opening of its newest exhibit, Right to Learn. The evening featured special guest Congressman Rubén Hinojosa, who offered remarks on the importance of education and access. Guests were invited to take a guided tour of the exhibit, which highlights the challenges and achievements in the pursuit of education in South Texas. The event welcomed community members, educators, and local leaders for an insightful look at the region’s educational history and those who helped shape it.

Our Texas, Our Future

November

is a time when we naturally slow down and reflect on our relationships, our communities, and the choices we make every day. Whether it’s how we connect with people, how we treat the planet, or even how we consume things like food and products, these choices matter. They shape the future of Texas—and the world.

So, there’s this idea called Reciprocity—it’s basically about giving back as much as you take. In today’s busy world, that’s not easy, especially when convenience is king. But it’s not about being perfect, just staying aware and trying to keep things balanced. When we make simple choices like cutting down on waste, reusing stuff, and supporting responsible habits, we can actually tip the scales in a better direction. And even small, regular actions can create a ripple effect that helps people, nature, and the future.

That’s the spirit behind ReFest, a fun and hands-on festival at Quinta Mazatlán on November 15, held in partnership with H-E-B to celebrate Texas Recycles Day. It’s designed to be interactive and fun, sharing simple ways to bring sustainability into everyday life—at home, at work, and everywhere in between. The event highlights seven easy actions: Re-forest, Re-use, Re-think, Re-purpose, Reduce, Recycle, and Reciprocity.

To get in the door, all you need is a plastic bottle or bag to recycle—your free ticket to a morning full of learning, community, and creativity. You’ll find interactive exhibits, live entertainment, local vendors who turn used items into something new, food, and fun for all ages.

ReFest is a one-day event on November 15, but it’s part of McAllen Recycles Month. Throughout November, Quinta Mazatlán offers fun, hands-on programs like Nature Walks, Science Activities, Guest Speakers, and Wellness Experiences such as Forest Bathing, Yoga, and Tai Chi. These events help visitors connect with nature and learn simple ways to make a positive impact, turning ideas into real change.

One of the guiding voices behind this movement is Robin Wall Kimmerer, a scientist and author who asks a thoughtprovoking question: “What does the Earth ask of us?” Her work reminds us that gratitude and responsibility go hand in hand. It’s not just about what we take from the planet—it’s also about what we give back.

ReFest is a great opportunity for everyone to rethink sustainability as a full-circle lifestyle—both at work and at home. In a world driven by fast consumption and throwaway habits, it challenges us to build something more meaningful: a future shaped by smarter choices and shared success.

This November, check out Quinta Mazatlán to see what sustainability is all about. It’s more than just a buzzword— it’s a way of living that supports people, animals, and the planet. It’s not about being perfect, just finding your place in the circle and making choices at home, work, and in your community that add up to something meaningful.

The 12th Annual McAllen Holiday Parade: Christmas Across America

Christmas Across America arrives in Texas when the 2025 McAllen Holiday Parade, presented by H-E-B and powered by Bert Ogden, returns on the 6th of December.

This year, the largest illuminated holiday and helium balloon parade in Texas will celebrate Christmas Across America. This new theme celebrates Santa’s holiday road trip across the country in search of holiday magic.

“We want to take our guests on a cross-country adventure to find holiday magic,” said Isaac Tawil, McAllen City Manager. “We’re using the power of creativity to showcase the people and places Santa finds along the way. It’s fun, it’s big, and it’s something you’ll only see at the McAllen Holiday Parade.”

Christmas Across America was the last theme that late McAllen Assistant City Manager and McAllen Parade cocreator Joe Vera worked on. He wrote, “McAllen should be celebrated alongside every great American city. There’s no better place to celebrate Christmas across America than McAllen.”

This December, Joe Vera’s vision will be realized with new illuminated floats, giant character balloons, marching bands, guest influencers, and celebrities like Danny Trejo, star of the Spy Kids franchise, Machete, Desperado, Con Air, From Dusk till Dawn, Heat, and other iconic films.

This year’s parade will premiere new floats based on reimagined versions of great American cities and attractions, from megalopolises like New York City and Los Angeles to American originals like Roswell, New Mexico.

The parade welcomes the return of the all-time favorite giant character balloon, SpongeBob Squarepants, as he spins for The Vuelta down the parade route alongside other new balloons, like Mr. Monopoly and returning balloons. The Vuelta is a McAllen Holiday Parade tradition that began when balloon handling teams heard the crowd shout Vuelta (spin and twirl) as they moved down the route. Balloon teams spun their balloons to the cheers, creating one of the parade’s signature attractions.

The Vuelta has three dedicated events within the parade: the spin-off at the McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium Opening Extravaganza, the South Padre Island Vuelta Zone hosted by John Jay & Rich, and the McAllen International Airport Skybox Fan Experience.

The Vuelta Spin-Off at the parade’s Opening Extravaganza

joins the stadium show’s live performances, marching bands, dancers, and fireworks show.

America’s Team will be represented at Christmas Across America by Dallas Cowboys legends: 3x Super Bowl champion and 2x Pro Bowl defensive tackle, number 78, Leon Lett, and Super Bowl champion and 3x Pro Bowl wide receiver, number 80, Tony Hill.

Tickets to the McAllen Holiday Parade Opening Extravaganza, the SPI Vuelta Zone, and the McAllen International Airport Skybox are limited. For the best holiday experience, families can reserve theirs now at mcallenholidayparade.com

Christmas Across America is only possible through the support of community partners who sponsor, volunteer, and make the holiday brighter for Valley families.

The 2025 McAllen Holiday Parade, this December 6th at 6:00 PM in McAllen, is presented by H-E-B and powered by Bert Ogden Fiesta Dealerships. McAllen International Airport, South Padre Island, Lone Star National Bank, Reliant Energy, and many more valued community sponsors also support the parade.

SPIRIT OF MCALLEN: WHISKEY BUSINESS BRINGS THE CITY’S TASTEMAKERS TOGETHER

The McAllen Chamber of Commerce once again delivered an unforgettable evening with its new event, Whiskey Business, hosted at the scenic Quinta Mazatlan. Guests gathered under the warm South Texas night sky to enjoy fine whiskey tastings, expertly paired bites, and live entertainment.

The event paired top-shelf whiskeys with bites from standout local chefs and restaurants, giving guests an authentic taste of McAllen’s growing food-and-drink scene. More than a night of tastings and live music, Whiskey Business brought together business leaders, entrepreneurs, and community advocates in one room—turning a fundraiser into a networking hub that perfectly echoed the Chamber’s mission of collaboration and community growth.

Whiskey Business was more than just a tasting event — it was a reminder of how McAllen continues to raise the bar on community engagement and unforgettable experiences.

“A NIGHT WITH DRISCOLL” CELEBRATES CULTURE, MUSIC, AND HEALING

On October 11th, at the UTRGV Performing Arts Complex, Driscoll presented “A Night with Driscoll,” a vibrant fundraising event spotlighting Cruzar La Cara de la Luna—the world’s first mariachi opera. The opera itself was a powerful celebration of heritage, family, and the art of storytelling. Through rich musical textures and vivid staging, the performance explored themes of identity, separation, and the enduring bonds of love across borders. This event is one of many that Driscoll will continue to host in the Valley to support its mission.

The event underscored Texas Oncology’s commitment to awareness and fundraising, giving participants a chance to honor loved ones, celebrate survivors, and remember those lost. Together, the Rio Grande Valley community created its largest breast cancer awareness event to date. With Texas Oncology, no one fights alone.

Outpatient Rehabilitation:

Get Back to Life on Your Terms

If injury or illness has compromised your ability to live life the way you used to, physical rehabilitation may be recommended. For Rosaura Rodea, outpatient rehabilitation at South Texas Health System® is helping her regain optimal functioning – and reclaim her independence.

“I had to start from the beginning.”

Rodea’s bout with influenza led to a prolonged hospitalization, pneumonia, and sepsis. She recovered from her illness, but it took a toll on her strength and endurance.

When she was discharged from the hospital, she could not walk or even eat on her own. “I had to start from the beginning,” she says.

Her doctors recommended outpatient rehabilitation therapy at South Texas Health System Edinburg. “There are not enough good words for this excellent team,” Rodea says.

Outpatient rehabilitation services at two convenient locations

South Texas Health System offers comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation services at both STHS Edinburg and STHS McAllen.

Physical therapy includes exercises designed to restore strength, improve balance, and increase endurance.

Occupational therapy can help restore and enhance living skills, such as toileting, grooming, bathing, dressing, cooking, and working.

Speech therapy helps improve speech production, speech comprehension, written and verbal communication, and swallowing.

Neurological rehabilitation can help after a brain injury, stroke, or other neurological event.

Knowing that each patient’s situation is unique, the staff works one-on-one with patients and their families to establish measurable, realistic goals.

“I am reaching my milestones.”

In Rodea’s case, she needed to build muscle strength and endurance to regain mobility and get back to activities of daily living. “I could not do much by myself,” she says.

Rodea started working with the outpatient rehabilitation therapists at STHS Edinburg – and little by little, began to see improvements that eventually added up to meeting big milestones.

“They keep me going to reach my goal of regaining strength and being more independent. They walk with me, step by step. I have made tremendous progress, and my doctor is very impressed.”

ETIQUESTIONS

It is Fall, and there are some activities that I am sure have etiquette tips that can help me and my family. What are the three most important rules to keep in mind this time of year?

Fall is a fun time for gathering with family and friends, and you are right, there are some things to keep in mind First, remember to always be gracious to the host/hostess Let them know you will be attending the event (RSVP) and thank them once the event is over . Second, never show up at a person’s home empty-handed Always take a small hostess gift Flowers, wine, and chocolate are some of my favorites . Finally, be on time Punctuality is important at events, so please be mindful not to arrive late Happy Fall!

It is so much fun to attend all the social events this time of year, and I am aware that sending thank-you cards is important. However, I am always stuck on what to write in the thank-you card. What advice do you have for writing heartfelt thank-you cards?

Thank you, cards are such an important way to let people know you appreciate being included in events The best tip I can give you is to just do it . The sooner, the better Writing thank-you cards should be authentic Write how you feel Make sure to include some details about the event and what you enjoyed Keep it short and simple, but personalized Thank you cards can really set you apart from the rest

I am so excited to host a dinner party at my home in one month. I have some friends who will be attending who do not drink alcohol, and other friends who do. What is the etiquette rule about serving alcohol?

This is such a great question If you are the hostess, you can serve alcohol or not, depending on what makes you comfortable I suggest that you make sure your bar is stocked with a variety of drinks . .both alcoholic and non-alcoholic . The goal is not to call special attention to guests who do or do not drink alcohol but to offer choices to all guests . Finally, be mindful of how much alcohol is being served Make sure that arrangements are made for guests driving home

CITY OF MCALLEN HOSTS INAUGURAL “A MORNING OF DIPLOMACY”

A BINATIONAL GATHERING HIGHLIGHTS CROSS-BORDER COMMERCE AND ECONOMIC DIPLOMACY

The City of McAllen launched National Hispanic Heritage Month on September 17, 2025, with its first-ever “A Morning of Diplomacy,” spotlighting the city’s leadership in cross-border collaboration and commerce. Held at the McAllen Performing Arts Center, the event brought together consuls general from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, along with state and federal officials, business leaders, and academics. Discussions centered on strengthening economic diplomacy, fostering regional partnerships, and understanding the growing impact of middle-income international shoppers in McAllen’s economy.

City Manager Isaac J. Tawil emphasized McAllen’s interdependence with its neighbors, noting that the city’s prosperity is tied to strong binational relationships.

Economist Dr. Belinda Román shared new data showing that Reynosa residents spent $49.2 million in McAllen over 33 shopping days, generating a total economic impact of nearly $80 million. Speakers, including Carlos Ealy of the Texas Secretary of State’s Office and Max Bouchet of the Meridian International Center, praised McAllen’s proactive approach to diplomacy and regional growth. Through sister-city partnerships and the launch of the McAllen International Relations Department, the city continues to strengthen its role as a hub for trade, innovation, and international cooperation.

A NIGHT AT THE CABARET: NOCHE DE VINO RAISES A GLASS TO THE ARTS

THE THANKSGIVING TABLE: WHAT’S SAFE (AND WHAT’S NOT) FOR YOUR DOG

Thanksgiving is almost here, a season of food, family, and thanks. While the turkey is roasting and the pies are baking, many of us will feel that familiar tug under the table, those big, pleading eyes of our furry family members. And while we want to share the feast, not every Thanksgiving family favorite is safe. So, before you give your fur baby a “taste of the season,” here’s what is safe to share, and what should stay on your plate!

Safe and Savory Bites

Good news first: your dog can enjoy a little Thanksgiving flavor, safely.

1. Turkey: Plain, cooked turkey breast is perfectly fine in small amounts. Just skip the skin, gravy, and especially bones, which can splinter and cause serious injury.

2. Sweet Potatoes: These are a great source of fiber and vitamins A and C. Serve them plain; no butter, marshmallows, or brown sugar.

3. Pumpkin: A spoonful of plain canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix) can soothe the digestive system and add a festive twist.

4. Green Beans and Carrots: Steamed or raw, they make crunchy, low-calorie treats that dogs love.

Foods to Avoid (No Matter

How Cute the Puppy Eyes)

Some Thanksgiving favorites can spell real trouble for dogs.

1. Stuffing and Gravy: Often made with onions, garlic, or fatty drippings, all of which are dangerous for dogs.

2. Mashed Potatoes: Butter, salt, and cream can upset their stomach and contribute to pancreatitis.

3. Bones and Fat Trimmings: Cooked bones can splinter, and fatty scraps can lead to digestive issues.

4. Desserts: Chocolate, xylitol (a common sugar substitute), raisins, and grapes are all toxic to dogs. Even a small bite can be harmful.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) warns that rich holiday foods can easily trigger gastrointestinal distress or pancreatitis in dogs, especially smaller breeds or those not used to table scraps (AKC, 2023). The ASPCA adds that emergency vet visits spike during the holidays due to food-related incidents, often from well-meaning pet owners who simply didn’t realize a treat was dangerous.

A Better Way to Celebrate Together

Instead of sharing your plate, consider making your dog their own “Thanksgiving sampler.” Mix a bit of plain turkey, green beans, and pumpkin into their kibble for a safe and special feast. Or keep a stash of dog-safe treats handy to reward them for sitting politely during dinner.

And if your dog does sneak something questionable, don’t wait, call your vet or the Pet Poison Helpline (855-7647661). Quick action can make all the difference.

In the Spirit of Gratitude

This Thanksgiving, the best gift you can give your dog isn’t food, it’s your attention. A long walk before dinner, a cozy nap by the fire, or a few extra ear scratches can mean more than any scrap from the table. After all, our dogs remind us every day that gratitude isn’t about what’s on the plate, it’s about who’s sitting beside us.

CROSSING STATE AND INTERNATIONAL LINES: YAQUI ANIMAL RESCUE’S PETS ARE BEING ADOPTED OUTSIDE

OF TEXAS

The Rio Grande Valley (RGV) is home to one of the largest stray pet populations in the nation. Thousands of stray cats and dogs roam the streets without access to food, shelter, or medical care. This issue not only affects public safety but also increases the burden on local shelters and contributes to the spread of disease.

Yaqui Animal Rescue experiences a much higher intake of stray or surrendered domestic animals than they can adopt out locally. Warmer climates, like those in South Texas, allow stray animals to survive and reproduce more frequently. Additionally, the Rio Grande Valley lacks affordable, accessible spay and neuter services, leading to more unwanted litters.

In recent years, Yaqui Animal Rescue has changed its adoption strategy. Since northeastern and northwestern states have lower intake rates and higher adoption rates, healthy animals can be transferred to areas with low stray populations. Transporting a healthy, adoptable animal to another qualified and reputable rescue alleviates the burden of sheltering the animal and gives them a second chance at life in a different state.

Transferring domestic animals is no easy feat and requires the animal to be deemed healthy by a veterinarian before travel. Before crossing state and international lines, the animal must be fully vaccinated, preferably spayed or neutered if of age, free of parasites, on flea and tick preventatives, and heartworm-negative, depending on the receiving state. The health certificate can only be issued by a licensed veterinarian, ensuring it is free from contagious diseases, up to date on vaccinations, and healthy enough to travel.

Once the animal is deemed healthy, transport must be scheduled. Yaqui Animal Rescue works with both professional and volunteer transporters to move healthy animals to other states and Canada. The journey typically takes two to three days by van or car. Yaqui has also flown animals to other states with volunteer pilots who are passionate about saving animals and helping them find their forever homes.

However, these efforts come at a cost. Vetting and transportation can cost over $500 per animal for Yaqui Animal Rescue. Despite the costs, the rescue believes that stray animals from South Texas have a better chance of a long life if adopted outside the Rio Grande Valley. Since 2013, they’ve transported thousands of healthy, adoptable animals to rescue partners across North America. Seeing a once-abandoned and discarded animal find a home in the beautiful Canadian landscape makes all the hard days worthwhile. For these animals, they are no longer invisible — they are part of a family.

To help Yaqui Animal Rescue transport more pets, visit www.yaquianimalrescue.com

Photography by Jacqueline

UTRGV Athletics unveiled the $45 million Vaqueros Performance Center (VPC), part of over $180 million in construction, renovations, and enhancements affecting all UTRGV sport programs across 13 capital projects, to the public on Sept. 19.

A 45,000-plus-square foot facility that houses the football program and features state-of-the-art weight training, academic, and sports medicine facilities for use by multiple teams, the VPC also features two practice fields, one of which is the same synthetic turf used at Robert & Janet Vackar Stadium and one of which is natural grass, in addition to a 4,973-square foot locker room and players lounge.
