Boys to Men

When thinking of ballet, most people picture girls in pink tutus and pointe shoes. But when asked to name a dancer, it’s the men they remember, in particular, Rudolf Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov. Both thrilled Western dance audiences after they each defected from Russia and had stellar careers in the West.

At the American Ballet Theatre William J. Gillespie School, boys are an important part of training the next generation of dancers. The school has options to start them off.

Boys can begin Pre-Primary classes at the age of three. Wearing black shorts and white tee-shirts, they learn the beginning steps that every dancer builds upon as they train.

For boys who want to try a dance class but don’t have any training, Sarah Jones, the school’s associate director, created Boys Dance Too! This program began in 2021 and introduces boys ages 6–12 to ballet in an encouraging and supportive environment. There are no girls in these classes, and the boys are allowed to wear whatever they want. A lot of superhero tee-shirts

and basketball shorts make an appearance. The classes finish with the boys showing off their exuberant leaps across the rehearsal room. Some of the boys decide they love what they are doing and move to the regular classes. Two of those boys are now in the Pre-Professional level, which includes ages 12–18. It’s also an excellent opportunity for boys already in the school to take this as a supplemental class.

One of them is Carson Triplett of Rancho Mission Viejo. When he was 10 years old, he was playing flag football and soccer but wanted to try something new and discovered ballet. He joined the Boys Dance Too! class. Four years later he has moved into regular classes in the school and loves the challenges and discipline of dance. For the past several years Triplett has also performed a major principal children’s role in the annual December production of ABT’s The Nutcracker. Last year he was the Nutcracker Prince, who goes into the battle against the Mouse King.

Triplett loved performing alongside the professional dancers. “It was very exciting to be onstage and interact with the adult dancers,” he told the Orange County Register “During rehearsals they would give me the best corrections you can get. It’s such an exciting experience.”

Although students continue through the Pre-Professional levels in mixed classes, by the time boys—who are now called men—reach about the age of 13 they also begin to take extra classes just for them, such as men’s technique and weight training. There are also mixed classes to learn partnering, an obviously very important skill for male dancers. They have male instructors who have had their own dance careers and can pass along their experiences.

One of the newest instructors at the school is Eric Tamm. He had a successful career with ABT and has now joined the school’s staff. Although Tamm started ballet training at the relatively late age of 14, he quickly impressed his instructors, something he passes on to his students. Tamm is co-teaching Boys Dance Too!, as well as the top two levels in the school and Men’s Tech.

Parents are equally enthusiastic about the training their boys are receiving. The parent of one student writes, “This is the best school for boys’ ballet in the OC. The facilities are state of the art and the school has an emphasis on good training and performing versus competition. This creates a nurturing environment for a dancer and the kids are very supportive of each other.”

Will the next great male dancer have the ABT Gillespie School on his resume?

For the first time, Segerstrom Center for the Arts will host a Boys Ballet Summer Intensive (BBSI) August 11–16. This is a preprofessional ballet program designed for male dancers ages 9–21. Among the classes are variations, repertoire, partnering, conditioning, acting, and more. The faculty of the intensive includes Patrick Frenette (ABT soloist), Rubén Martín (principal teacher at the ABT JKO School) and Jeffrey Rogers (principal teacher at the Ballet West Academy).

“This intensive is designed to provide an engaging and educational program for male dancers who seek a higher level of classical ballet training,” says Frenette. “There is no better way to prepare these students for professional life than providing them with an intense working environment. While they are challenged in the daily classes, the real inspiration lies in the camaraderie they have with each other.”

Dancers must have at least two years of ballet training. There is an in-person audition on April 7 at Segerstrom Center in addition to the submission of photos. More information about photo submission or in-person auditions can be found at boysballetsummerintensive.com or by scanning the QR code.

Gaining a better life through the Cassin Promise

There are special people in our community who are “givers,” happy to help support causes big and small that are close to their hearts. Kevin and Denise Cassin are two of those people.

A year ago, the Cassins made a significant donation to the Center to be used specifically by the Center’s education department to increase our outreach and programming in the community.

Today this donation is paying dividends. The Center has been able expand what it can offer to historically underserved teens and young adults, which includes providing arts workshops and residencies, and opportunities for students to attend performances at the Center. For most of these young people, they have never had the chance to see or engage in the performing arts before now.

The Cassin Promise grew out of the Cassins’ love and support of the Center’s 34-year-old program Summer at the Center (SATC). This is an intensive two-week experience during which high school students enrolled in the Orange

County Department of Education’s ACCESS (Alternative, Community and Correctional Education Schools and Services) program learn to build critical life skills in specially designed music and theater workshops culminating in public performances. SATC students learn to overcome adversity in their lives, build selfesteem, and practice problem solving, teamwork and collaboration, putting them on better paths to a more positive future.

The Cassin Promise extends this same type of programming off campus, year-round through a roster of teaching artists who go out to ACCESS school sites as well as other community organizations to provide workshops and residencies in acting, singing, dancing, and storytelling. This allows for more regular touch points with ACCESS students throughout the year, strengthening the life skills they learn through participation in the arts.

Angel is one student who benefitted from both the Cassin Promise and SATC programs.

Denise and Kevin Cassin (back row, left and right) with some of the participants from Summer at the Center 2024, including Angel, front row, far right.

He joined ACCESS when he was 17 with zero high school class credits. He started taking dance classes at his school site through the Cassin Promise program, which he found gave him a learning experience closer to that of traditional high school. Angel enjoyed attending these classes which motivated him to participate in Summer at the Center. Angel credits both programs for significantly boosting his confidence and helping him step out of his comfort zone. “I will remember Summer at the Center as meeting a group of individuals from various backgrounds who have become meaningful friends,” says Angel. He learned how to trust and collaborate with his fellow students, make new friends, and bond further with his current classmates. Our classes gave him an opportunity to have some fun, but also built up his confidence, form connections, and complete something which directly helped him reach his other goals.

Angel’s mother is proud of her son’s

accomplishments. “Summer at the Center made a positive impact on my son,” she says. “Although he is very shy, this program was able to get him out of his shell and interact with other people. As a parent, it’s an awesome feeling seeing your son receive such a positive life-changing experience.”

This past fall, Angel spoke in front of the Orange County Department of Education Board about his experiences with SATC and the Cassin Promise. The confidence he gained during these programs helped him complete the Explorer Program with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. He is on track to graduate this year and is beginning the process to become a correctional service assistant.

Reflecting on Angel’s story, Denise Cassin says “We are thrilled that we have been able to make a difference with our donation. We hope others will be inspired to do the same and assist these transforming projects. It’s what community is all about.”

“To jazz, or not to jazz, there is no question”

The 2025–26 jazz season might induce whiplash—in a good way. Familiar names, like Brandford Marsalis, Gerald Clayton, and Christian McBride, mix with artists making their Center debut, including Caity Gyorgy and the Lao Tizer Band.

The season opens with jazz giant saxophonist Branford Marsalis and his quintet. Having spent four decades in the international spotlight, Marsalis—brother of Wynton Marsalis—is one of the foremost jazz artists of our times. He formed his own quartet in 1986, and it quickly became the ensemble that others wanted to emulate.

But he didn’t stop there. He’s expanded his musical reach as a composer, bandleader, instrumentalist and educator. Who would have thought that a jazz artist would collaborate with the Grateful Dead? He did that. Marsalis has recently signed with the legendary label Blue Note Records, which absolutely cements his jazz credentials. As the Los Angeles Times says about him, “He represents the highest echelon of jazz tenor saxophones.”

Caity Gyorgy is new to the American jazz scene but she’s quickly becoming a name to remember. This Canadian Juno Award winner

has quickly amassed an international fan base who love her bebop and swing music.

The first thing to know is that her last name is pronounced “George.” Second, she writes much of her own music. “Canadian jazz singer Caity Gyorgy, in addition to having a warm voice and swinging phrasing, is a skilled songwriter whose originals sound as if they are from the 1950s with more modern lyrics,” says Downbeat. Gyorgy also has hot scatting skills, and when she gets going she will blow you away.

You may not have heard of the Lao Tizer Band, but that’s about to change. Tizer is a keyboardist who has no fear of crossing musical boundaries. Growing up, he says his hippie parents listened to everything from classic rock, Ravi Shankar, Janis Joplin, classical music, and Motown. In his late teens he listened to Miles Davis and decided that jazz sounded like it broke musical rules he wanted to explore. He moved to Los Angeles and got experience on the job from some of the great jazz artists playing in local clubs.

Now he’s getting rave reviews. Speaking of the band’s recording Amplify, Jazz Weekly says, “This is the kind of jazz that is both accessible and energetic.”

“Tizer is one of the new generation of instrumentalists who can’t really be categorized,” says a reviewer for Smooth Times. “It’s a mixture of pop-rock, world beat, and contemporary jazz with some jam band sensibility thrown in. With all the talk about artists who can bring a younger vibe to the genre Lao Tizer and his band… should

be mentioned as one of the acts that is on the front lines of this movement.”

“I say forget the boundaries,” says Tizer. “Just make good music and try to connect with as many listeners as you can.”

New York Voices, the Grammy-winning vocal ensemble, is taking its farewell tour after 38 years together, and jazz fans will want to be there for this. The group has been well-known for its eclectic music choices which have been appreciated by jazz audiences around the world. From Brazilian music with Ivan Lins to Big Band recordings and so much in between.

“Unlike other concert performers, New York Voices demands undivided attention from their listeners,” says Somethingelsereviews.com.

“Their four-part harmonies work together in ways seemingly simple to the ‘naked ear,’ but a closer listen reveals otherwise. The members leisurely explore every melody, linger over lush chords, and expand upon moods and themes already present in the lyrics.”

The Clayton name is very familiar to Center jazz audiences through the appearances of the Clayton-Hamilton Orchestra. Now, a new generation is coming up. Gerald Clayton’s father, bass player John Clayton, was one of the leaders of the orchestra. His son is considered one of the finest jazz pianists of his generation. He attended the Thornton School of Music at USC, studied with Kenny Barron at the Manhattan School of Music, and in 2006 won second place in the Thelonious Monk Institute Jazz Piano Competition.

Of course, Gerald has played with his father’s orchestra, and duets with him too, but he can more than hold his own in the jazz scene. He has served as the musical director of the Monterey Jazz Festival on Tour, released

successful albums, and collaborated with the leading names in jazz, including Diana Krall, Roy Hargrove, Teri Lyne Carrington, and Kendrick Scott.

Two bassists performing together? Aren’t they forgetting something? A piano? Maybe a saxophone? Nope. Legendary bassists Christian McBride—who plays jazz and funk—and Edgar Meyer—who covers classical and bluegrass music—demonstrate that pairing up gives them endless possibilities. They play everything from new compositions to standards from the Great American Songbook and everything in between. The pair have released an album called But Who’s Gonna Play the Melody?

“The chemistry between the two players is as good as any two musicians regardless of instrument,” says No Treble magazine. “Their feel is the kind that’s only attained by skill, listening and trust.”

“Intimate and raucous, playful and exquisite, gritty and refined, [this album] reveals worlds of influence, experience and inspiration in just two basses,” says Bass magazine. You’ll never look at a bass the same way again.

It’s going to be an exciting season. Get your subscription now and don’t miss a single show.

Life of Pi

A theatrical event unlike anything else!

Winner of three Tony® Awards and the Olivier Award for Best Play, the Broadway and West End sensation Life of Pi is “an exhilarating evening of theater” (The Wall Street Journal).

Based on the novel that sold more than 15 million copies and became a worldwide phenomenon, Life of Pi is an epic story of perseverance and hope that speaks to every generation and “gives new life to Broadway” (The Today Show).

After a shipwreck in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, a 16-year-old boy named Pi survives on a lifeboat with four companions—a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan, and a Royal Bengal tiger.

Told with jaw-dropping visuals, world class puppetry, and exquisite stagecraft, Life of Pi creates a breathtaking journey that will leave you filled with awe and joy.

Tom Jones finally makes his Center debut

Tom Jones is coming to the Center for a onenight-only concert.

Do we need to say anything else?

While The Beatles were conquering the rock ‘n’ roll world, Jones was wowing audiences with “What’s New Pussycat?” and “It’s Not Unusual.” In his long career of more than seven decades, he has sung pop, rock, country, soul, and gospel. In 2008, The New York Times called him a “musical shapeshifter [who can] slide from soulful rasp to pop croon, with a voice as husky as it [is] pretty.” That voice has sold more than 100 million records and is still going strong.

With this tour, Defy Explanation, Sir Tom is doing what he loves best: playing to a live audience. He began performing in small clubs in his Welsh hometown when he was in his teens, and by 1967 he was headlining in Las Vegas.

Jones reflected on his long career and the impact those songs had. “Sixty years ago I released ‘It’s Not Unusual,’ and what a ride it’s been!” he told People magazine earlier this year. “Back then I would never have believed this one tune would have led on to such a wonderful life and career, full of music, fantastic people and

touring all over the world.”

Another of his biggest hits almost didn’t happen. “What’s New Pussycat,” the theme song to the movie of the same name, was offered to him by Burt Bacharach, who wrote it with Hal David. Jones wasn’t impressed, but Bacharach said it needed Jones’ big voice. It did indeed so Jones recorded the song. It was a huge hit on both sides of the Atlantic, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1966, although it didn’t win.

Jones’ career has never really stopped. There was a resurgence in notability in the 2010s due to his coaching role on the BBC talent show The Voice UK that lasted seven years. He continues to be a popular singer, and for someone who is 85 years old, that’s saying something. The voice has never flagged, and he still loves performing on stage just as much as he did when he was starting out in Pontypridd, Wales.

Come see for yourself why he’s still the showman that has so many screaming fans.

What is your legacy journey?

Leaving a legacy or estate gift is a powerful way to ensure that your values, beliefs, and contributions continue to make an impact long after you’re gone. It’s not just about wealth—it’s about creating a lasting influence on your family, community, or causes that matter most to you. The arts can be an important part of that when you include the Center in your estate planning. With that gift, you become part of the Center’s Legacy Society, which honors individuals who have made a commitment of a planned gift or have made an outright gift to the Center’s endowment fund to help secure the future of this institution.

“We, as human beings, need cultural enrichment in our lives,” says Bev Sandelman, who, with her husband Bob, are long-time Center supporters. “The Legacy Society gives us the satisfaction of knowing that even after we are gone, we can still have an impact on the arts at the Center for our children, grandchildren and future generations.”

Center board member Bart Asner grew up in New York City and loved attending Broadway shows and symphony concerts. When he moved to Orange County he and his wife, Elizabeth, were thrilled to have the Center at their doorstep. They soon became Broadway subscribers and Center donors.

“We have a tremendous sense of pride to have helped build the Center at the beginning and want to make sure that there is a future full of arts,” says Bart. “We love the fact that the Center is involved in education initiatives and wants to make sure that kids are exposed to the arts.”

Planned giving through the Center enables the arts to thrive in Orange County, and the Center can continue to inspire, educate, entertain and enrich the lives of our community members. For example, the Center’s education department is heavily involved in creating programs that reach many young people, including The Cassin Promise, Disney Musicals in Schools, Summer at the Center, Studio D: Arts School, and many more.

Estate gifts allow the Center to continue its mission of quality artistic and education programming and cement its position as a world-renowned performing arts organization and a foundation of culture in our community. Please join us in this important arts journey.

Please let us know if you have provided for the Center in your estate plan and would like to be included in our Legacy Society. In recognition of this support, the Center offers members special donor amenities, including:

• Invitation to the exclusive Legacy Society Dinner with a featured Center performance.

• Name listing in the monthly performance program and Segerstrom Hall donor display (with permission)

• Invitations to events, donor receptions and shows
