A Tradition 45 Years in the Making

Happy Holidays!

This season’s production of Charles Dickens’ masterwork A Christmas Carol marks the 45th year we’ve been producing Jerry Patch’s adaptation here at South Coast Repertory on the Segerstrom Stage. While things in the production have changed here and there (refreshed paint, a new hat for Scrooge, our first Tiny Tim is now 53 years old), many of the costumes, set pieces, props and, most importantly, the text remain intact in the original form from the opening night in 1980. It’s a production literally 45 years in the making and it lives, breathes and delights year after year. We love it. You love it. And if Dickens were alive today and had a really good agent, he’d love it, too. Thank you for being in attendance and adding to the significance of this special 45th anniversary. We are proud to be part of your Orange County holiday traditions.

This year, as I reflect on our work, I’m moved by what makes Charles Dickens so special. Last year, our Youth Conservatory beautifully produced Dickens’ David Copperfield . Like A Christmas Carol , it explores themes of redemption, courage, liberation and strength. Timeless and universal, Dickens writes of a man looking back on his life from birth to maturity and he contextualizes what he’s learned along the way. The play reminded me that so much of Dickens’ work is muscular and rich, evocative and ornate and then all at once, it cuts to the chase (“bah, humbug”).

Each time we experience Dickens’ work, a new layer, deeper and more personal, rises to the surface. Each year as we grow older, we identify with different characters than before and find new points of intersection that resonate with our own experiences. He plumbs the depths to create intimate portraits of people, illuminating the vastness of our shared experience. I love and admire this about Dickens’ writing and I love this about most classic literature.

This year as you enjoy the spectacle, revel in song and mimic the “humbugs,” I urge you to listen. Hear the play as you watch. Close your eyes every now and then and listen to Dickens’ (and Jerry Patch’s) language. Allow it to wash over you, move you—transport you. I can’t think of a better way to spend the holiday season.

By the way, I’d love to know if any of you have seen all 45 years of this show! Shoot me an email, and I promise I’ll get back to you!

45 Years of A Christmas Carol in Orange County

When my husband and I moved to Orange County last year, we were delighted to discover Southern Californian’s incredible joy in—and public displays of devotion toward—the winter holidays. I found myself mesmerized by twinkling lights wrapped around palm trees, covering vehicles and strewn across terraces. It was Christmas—just without the snow!

This year, in celebration of South Coast Repertory’s 45th Anniversary of A Christmas Carol , we’ve brought the snow and more holiday experiences to Ela’s Terrace and the lobby. We deeply appreciate the support of our A Christmas Carol sponsors for 18 years, Julia and George Argyros, Lisa Argyros and Stephanie Argyros, for helping us to make this an extra special anniversary. I hope you enjoy the hot chocolate bar, mid-week visits with Santa and photo opportunities created to enhance your theatre experience and extend our holiday welcome a little further. All of this was designed by H. Adam Harris, SCR’s Artistic/Audience Engagement Associate, alongside several members of our production, marketing and front-of-house teams. Don’t forget to tag @SouthCoastRep in your posts.

Many families in our audience have made SCR’s A Christmas Carol an annual tradition for multiple generations—if your family is one of them, thank you. If you are new to South Coast Repertory, welcome! We know that, like two generations of audiences before you, you’ll delight in this timeless tale of redemption through empathy, joy and generosity—the true spirits of Christmas.

Over 45 years, this uniquely Orange County version of A Christmas Carol has welcomed to the stage more than 700 young people from SCR’s lauded Theatre Conservatory. These avid students have played roles from Tiny Tim to Young Scrooge to Turkey Boy. They appear alongside our professional artists, and we hope that you see actors who represent the diversity of our OC neighbors. We know you’ll see their deep love of the theatre in the elation on their faces and feel it in your heart. In more ways than one, this is the theatre magic that sustains a production for 45 years.

Beyond A Christmas Carol we hope you’ll consider making theatre attendance a new year’s resolution. Much like the gym membership we’ll all likely commit to in January, making joy and connection at the theatre a family priority also creates a happier, healthier you—it’s just science. A 2017 University College London study found that watching theatre stimulated audience members’ cardiovascular systems to the same extent as a 28-minute workout! In addition, the same researchers found that audience members, with no previous social connection, synched up their heartbeats during the performance.

I look forward to seeing you back at the theatre in the new year!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays,

An Enduring Tradition

This season, we celebrate our 45th year of staging Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol , adapted by Jerry Patch. N ot all 45 years have been consecutive (due to the pandemic in 2020), but the annual tradition marches on proudly. Over the years, the cast and crew have become a family, many returning each November to reprise their roles, tackle new c hallenges and welcome newcomers into the fold. By the first performance, we’ve created a tight-knit ensemble and the popular classic is not just re-invigorated

How it started...

through their hard work and spirit, but reborn as fresh, inspiring and evergreen. But we’re not complete until joined by SCR’s greater family—the audience. A few have seen the show every year since 1980. Many first came with their parents and now bring their own children or grandchildren. A Christmas Carol has endured because it brings us together. We are reminded to consider the lessons that lead to Ebenezer Scrooge’s redemption—that love, life, family and community should be appreciated and celebrated at this magical time of year.

How it’s going...

Pictured on the left as Ebenezer Scrooge is Hal Landon Jr. in the inaugural 1980 production of A Christmas Carol. He played the role for 40 years. On the right, Richard Doyle, now in his fifth year appearing in the role. Both are founding members of South Coast Repertory.

“A Christmas Carol” by the Numbers

When A Christmas Carol finishes its 45th year, Orange County’s longest running holiday show will have delighted nearly 625,000 audience members over more than 1,568 performances. Here are some other fun facts about the show:

• O ver the 45 years, 234 professional actors have played adult roles in the show.

• Each season 16 child actors from SCR’s Theatre Conservatory portray Tiny Tim, the Cratchits and others. While 720 children’s roles have been available, many children have returned to the same role or moved on to older roles, resulting in 574 child actors over the years.

• There have been roughly 6,075 hours of rehearsal time over the 45 years.

• Richard Doyle, who now plays Ebenezer Scrooge, also has portrayed six other roles—The Spirit of Christmas Past, Solicitor, Joe, Mr. Fezziwig, a Gentleman and even Scrooge’s nephew, Fred.

• Conservatory Director Hisa Takakuwa, who marks 33 years with the production this year, portrayed Sally and Toy Lady for 14 years.

• From the half-hour call (30 minutes until show time), until their parents take them home after the show, the kids in the cast are never alone backstage. SCR has a fun-loving staff member with the western-sounding title of “wrangler” to serve as backstage guide, friend, mentor and sounding board.

• There are 19 women’s and 33 men’s costumes, each consisting of approximately five pieces—290 adult costume pieces total.

• There are three original costumes still in the show: The Spirit of Christmas Present, The Spirit of Christmas Yet-to-Come, and Mrs. Shelley (it was originally Mrs. Cratchit’s costume).

• The number of children’s costumes changes from year to year, depending on sizes needed. The costume shop labels every item (including socks, scarves, hats, gloves), requiring more than 300 labels.

SCR Theatre Conservatory Students Shine on Stage

In today’s performance of A Christmas Carol, you’ll see young actors in the roles of Martha, Belinda, Peter and “Tiny” Tim Cratchit. And Turkey Boy. And the specters of “Want” and “Ignorance.” And the young people among the partygoers. All of them are students in SCR’s Theatre Conservatory who earned the roles through hard work, talent, rigorous auditions and the growth and promise they have shown in their classes.

“The students selected for A Christmas Carol show maturity, focus, confidence and an overall readiness to take on this exciting challenge. It’s a thrill for us to provide young actors this singular opportunity to perform and learn next to professional artists in this beloved classic,” says Conservatory Director Hisa Takakuwa, who portrayed Sally and Toy Lady in A Christmas Carol for 14 years, served as assistant director for 14 additional years and directs the production for the fifth consecutive year. “Each year’s cast of 16 young actors brings a new life and energy to this wonderful show.”

Many conservatory students between the ages of 9 and 17 audition each year for the annual holiday classic. They must be active students in our

training program, show strength in their class work and have the recommendation of their teacher.

“Our acting classes guide students toward understanding the artistic process, discovering their creativity and building their ability to work confidently with others,” explains Takakuwa. “Our students learn through their work in this production and when they resume classes, we see how much they have grown as artists.”

ANNUAL FUND

South Coast Repertory is honored and grateful to have more than 2,000 Friends of SCR who support our Annual Fund. Every year, the Friends contribute critical dollars to help us make up the difference between the income we receive from ticket revenue and the actual cost of producing plays, commissioning new works, bringing theatre to school children and all the other services that SCR provides to Orange County and beyond. Friends’ gifts range from $75 to more than $100,000. Each and every Friend of SCR plays a valuable role in the life of this theatre.

From a vision that evolved from a small group of passionate parents more than 25 years ago, Sage Hill School has emerged as the leading independent high school in Orange County. The intention was to develop a school that would inspire innovative thinking, nurture creative thought and embrace community.

Inspired by the opportunity to expand on the mission and values of its founders, Sage Hill has launched a capital campaign with an ambitious goal of $25 million This campaign will enable more students to experience the impact of a Sage Hill education. As we become the first 7-12 independent school in Orange County, we seek philanthropic investment that will:

• Expand the Sage Hill program to include a middle school that educates 7th and 8th grade students

• Build a new academic and athletics facility that enhances the Sage Hill experience for all

• Strengthen the student body with increased commitment to financial assistance

Support the Campaign

We invite all who are interested to play a vital role in bringing this historic milestone to life. For more information on Sage Hill’s capital campaign, including potential naming opportunities for donors, please contact:
